PREFACE
disaster relief project, historical heritage conservation, universal design as well as student projects among others. The renowned event also includes ASA Forum and seminar in various topics ranging from international forum in design, technical, environmental to professional practice seminars. One exhibition worth mentioning is “100 Selected Projects”, by changing the way to present each company’s work to one piece of architectural model that fits the theme ‘ASA NEXT’. It allows 100 firms, big or small, to present their finest piece of work. The result is an exciting mix of varieties of projects that is so dynamic it represents “Thainess”, thus allow more members to be able to gain exposure to the public being part of this event.
In the year 2015, the Architect Expo has reached its 29th anniversary. With the theme, “ASA Next: Thai architectural Identities”, which aims to look back upon ourselves, to compare our work, knowledge and experiences to international architects in order to improve our weaknesses and develop our strengths, to increase professional competitive edge in the international arena; especially when Thailand is entering into the ASEAN Economic Community by the end of 2015. The main objective of the architectural exposition is to promote the architect’s profession to general public as well as to create an event for architects to learn and share experiences in various aspects of the profession as well as for ASA members to meet annually. This also benefits architectural students in participating and learning about the profession. The exhibitions varied to many areas in the profession that ASA involved in, for instance, Thai and international architectural design, social and community participation project,
I wish to express my gratitude to the chairman of the Architect Expo 2015 organizing committee, Chana Sumpalung, and his team including committee members, working groups and staff as well as the organizers of the event for their dedication and hard work to make the event successful fulfilling our objective; and to our sponsors for their support and making this event possible. I hope that the Architect Expo will continue to be an event that benefits our members as well as general public alike. We will continue to improve and expand its content to make the event matters to all.

Architect Expo every year is always an event with huge expectation of Thai people. As a chairman, I do feel so honored and so overwhelming at the same time since day one I was assigned by Association of Siamese Architects (ASA) to lead this Architect Expo 2015 to the ‘Next’ level. From fear and confused at first to the feeling of success in last minute, I would say it is my best experience in life. Walking along this road with friends, we have to face with many obstacles. But those obstacles not able to slow us down, it even level up our team creativity. Thanks to committees for their devotion. They are not only great friends but also be an expert in their field of architecture. I also have to thank more than hundred architects, companies and professional organizations from all over regions for their best support, both who able to join exhibition and the others who wish to join but unable to get through because of our area and budget limitation. Those supports and understandings had turned all difficulties of ASA Expo into fun and finally having many creative contents that represent Thai Architects under the theme of ASA NEXT: Tua Ton Khon Thai (ตัวตน คนไทย). Mission to find ‘Thai’s Identity’ had started. The questions had been asked. The answer is come out very exciting. Within this report, we wish it is a record of our great memories, a reference for all participants and more important is to publish our Thainess content known internationally. I believe every step would bring value experiences and I hope ASA next year team would continue another step to another path they wish to achieve. Each step is important to understand more to ourselves and open up the view to understand the competitive world out there. Chana Sumpalung Chairman of Architect Expo 2015

01 SOUL OF SPACE
Medicine Education Buildings
760i ARCHITECT AND CONSULTANT
With the building’s structure representing a human skeleton, this project was built as a museum for the public and students of medicine in order to honor people who donated their bodies for anatomical studies. The design of the building is inspired from combination of the shape of a lotus and a typical gable, and refers to the cultural and architectural identity of Thailand. Natural materials are used to represent warmth and calm, and textures are applied without any coating to represent the meaning of ‘Truth of Life’. The idea of a breathing wall typical to a Thai house in which outside air permeates to ventilate inside, is used. The wall pattern is applied properly and harmoniously matches the building’s function. Basement is lifted for proper ventilation too. ‘Chan’, as seen in a Thai house, is applied as a transfer zone to help people adjust to differing temperatures of exterior and interior spaces, before entering the building.

08 A+ TIME LINE ARCHIPLUS STUDIO
In this installation art, the model of the time line shows the order of selected project plans floating above a mirror base. The plans represent the studio’s experience in architectural design of each year, from the past to the present.
Installation Art of A+ Time Line
The installation also represents the present time of the studio - the reflection in the mirror talks of the past and the hierarchy of different sizes and shapes of the plans, to talk of the invisible lines, space, volume and mass that has inspired their design creativity.

Bird Sanctuary
Each year nearly 10,000 birds are smuggled in and out of Thailand. These birds of all sizes are taken from the wild merely for their exotic colors and tweeting sounds. Even if these birds are rescued by police officers, their lives remain in jeopardy. All birds retrieved from smugglers are kept in cages inside police stations as evidence of crime. Not knowing how to take care of birds the police officers feed them with dog or cat food that leads to the birds’ extreme malnutrition and eventual death. The project is a bird sanctuary in northern Thailand that serves as both an educational facility and bird rehabilitation center. The integrated approach to bird conservation simulates natural habitat and bird-viewing tower. Palm fiber discarded from agricultural production is revalued as a construction material for the building envelope (eco skin), which also provides additional habitat and food sources for all birds in the area. This piece of property had been laid out for a real estate development. All roads within the master plan are 6 meters wide and constructed with water drainage system in place. The Bird Sanctuary is developed around the concept “Everything happens within 6 meters”, where new construction is confined to the existing footprint.

25 INDEFINITY-01
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE
INDEFINITY-01
INDEFINITY-01 is an object of exploration and an attempt to understand a particular material. This experimentation is not a part of any specific architectural project; it does not have a definite purpose. It is part of a process that emerged from the use of this material in different ways in various architectural projects that the office has worked on. On surface this acrylic as a material may be just a simple and clear substance, however, the more they worked with the material, the more they realized its provocative complexity – it is an almost invisible substance yet is substantial, it has undefined outlines of what is hidden within the translucent mass, and it responds to light in unexpected ways. There seems to be more remaining to be discovered. This experiment is part of an ongoing process to understand the infinite possibilities of this indefinite material’s properties.

40 VISUALISE IDIN ARCHITECTS
Lima Delmar
This resort was specifically designed with homosexual customers as its target group. It is located on a piece of land with limitations in size and shape; however, the architects discovered that a triangle form could be perfectly and effectively fitted into the land. Some parts of the triangle are simplified to create empty spaces and corners while offering a greater sense of privacy and sense of imagination amongst the guests. The booth presents the main idea of the project in terms of perspective and imagination, and the model comprises of 3,800 small wooden triangle pillars set up in high and low level on the inclined plane. It is built up into a shape of Lima Delmar. Nevertheless, the view is different from person to person.

Nat Motors Head Office
Following the concept of making different types of architecture, four planes that represent the architects four projects are tied together. All four planes are folded to enhance the rigidity of the structure as a single object, and create a space in the shape of the letter ‘M’. The architects propose to show different types of structures and materials for each site’s specific conditions. During the conceptual design process selected were materials from the local area and the method of construction was based on the constraints of each site. In the whole project, the same technique and detail design is applied during construction period and to the finished architectural treatment in keeping with the original concept of the design.

51 THREE PRIMITIVE CAVES
Pavilion I II III IV
MAGLA
Pavilion I II III IV, is a cluster of three primitive huts and one exclusive teahouse situated in a family’s private estate to create an extensive recreation space for private parties and occasional events. Development of two rectangular shapes extruded into 3 dimensional forms of the Pavilions creates contradiction of external light and internal shade, resembling the atmosphere of a traditional Thai house. When the wider and lower part at the entrance meets the narrower and taller part at the rear side, it emphasizes the cave-like quality to the inhabitants to feel hidden from the environment yet pleasantly enjoy the garden from the inside. Material selection and repetitive architectural details of the exterior shell such as Zinc cladding, and interior surface in dark oak wood, enhance the modern vocabulary of the Pavilions.

52 MYTH MASSAGE MEDESIGN AND I
From ancient Thai folklore, Nagas are semi divine serpent creatures in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and Naga palace is a place beyond anyone’s imagination. While Devas are one of the many different types of non-human beings who share the characteristics of being more powerful, having a longer life-span, and are much happier than human beings. Deva Naga is a place of imagination inspired by the myths of Nagas and Devas, and all design elements in the project apply the identities of Naga and the imagination evoked by the myth since the past to the present.
Deva Naga
Deva Naga is not only a resort and spa but it is designed to be a commemorative architecture.

The effect obtained from this technique creates visions in unexpected dimensions. The raw steel and sling structure reflects the function used to support pressure at the BTS station. It is the architectural design that supports the main work of the area for a short period. Apart from making it livable, the design focuses on creating building usage experience and reflecting on how the building is movable.

62 BRICK A BRAC ONION
COTTO Another Perspective 3 / Ventura Lambrate
Following a brief – ‘the space of beauty’ - the architects developed Brick a Brac design from local materials used in Thai culture. They worked on an ordinary system of construction to give an innovative appearance to the Thai way of using lavatories. A brick is designed as a hanger and a holder of objects ranging from lavatory paper to the towel called Pa Kao Ma used by Thais. Brick a Brac is strong enough to hold the weight of a three-year-old boy. The wall holder is built on the exterior as it reflected the Thai ritual of defecation. In the past, there was no clear distinction between public and the private spaces in Siam and people took a bath in the waterways. They urinated and defecated in exterior spaces far away from their dwelling places, as manifested in the old idioms ‘going to the rice field’ and “going to the boat landing”, meaning “to defecate” and “to urinate”. It was only in the 19th century that King Chulalongkorn introduced public lavatories for the inhabitants of Bangkok, but people in rural areas continued to defecate outdoors. Little by little the idea of having a private bathroom in or next to a bedroom became the norm of life for those who lived in Bangkok. The luxury of a bath becomes “space of beauty”. Also developed is a white ceramic edition of Brick a Brac for interior usage. Its clean and neat surface has a touch of the Thai color known as Celadon Green.

64 TWIST & SHOUT
Ratchayothin Community Mall
OPENSPACE DESIGN
The main idea of this project was Container Modular Design, which we have tried to propose for a new style of community mall. As the long side of the site faces the main road, diagonal arrangement of the modules were created - ‘Twist & Shout’, instead of an ordinary parallel arrangement. With this design strategy each shop gained two sides of frontal windows, and the façade of all shops in this project were turned to impact traffic direction. Besides, we have achieved an interesting and attractive community mall elevation. Moreover, to cut and open some floors, walls and ceilings would help make varieties of modular assembly and created unique space of the project absolutely.

76 HEXAFLEXAGON QUINTRIX ARCHITECTS
3d-Hexaflexagon Facade
The link between math and architecture goes back to ancient times when the two disciplines were virtually indistinguishable. The Pyramids are perhaps one of the earliest examples of mathematical principles in architecture. Mobius strip is another good example that many architects try to use. Today, math continues to feature prominently in building design around the world and thanks to modern technology, architects can explore a variety of exciting design options based on complex mathematical languages, allowing them to build groundbreaking forms. First discovered in the 1930s, Hexaflexagon has attracted the curiosity of great scientists for decades. This façade is one example from Quintrix Lab that takes advantage of geometry, which can turn and give a change to present eight varieties of surfaces. Audience can interact by turning each unit to gain a different sky effect as they like.

The main characteristic of this project is a group of existing Tamarind trees at its center. While the 2,000-square-meter office and retail space has to be placed to fulfill the project financially, the building was divided into several masses that connect via multi-level sculpture terraces that blend with the existing trees, leaving almost all the trees intact. Used are three different degrees of glass façades (reflective, translucent, and transparent). The east façade is claded with translucent glass, and the shop fronts and some part of north façade are transparent. The ‘inner’ façades and the floating gallery are covered with reflective glass, thus creating a visual illusion along with the multi-level sculpture terraces and existing trees.

ARCHITECTURE FOR 89 AN ACTIVE MOVEMENTS SUPERMACHINE STUDIO
10 Cal Tower, The Labyrinth
The project considers how people will live in the near future and reinterprets the role of ‘a playground’ defining it as a meeting place, to create architecture for active movements among adults and kids rather than just setting up playing facilities as seen in traditional play ports. Fun is created by just running up and down the concrete structure, playing hide and seek in the labyrinth enables people to meet physically rather than chatting with them virtually on computer or smart phone screens. To complete the loop one will have to spend ten Calories. Calorie tower is a structure for a future society where architecture is not built based on the most efficient and quickest-access philosophy, but on a detour and more possibility basis. It is a tower for those in the community to come in, meet, and spend time together more actively.

96 THE FUSION
VIN VARAVARN ARCHITECTS
The Hotel Factory 14
Inspiration is drawn from the history and identity of Bangna-Trad, an area that is currently being transformed from an industrial area of the past into a residential area with emerging, large-scale shopping malls, of the future, for this project. With the continuous growth of the city the area has become a place of fusion between the industrial and the residential, and the intention of the project is to capture the essence of this fusion into the design of a hotel before the area transforms completely. One of the main elements of the building is the rusted steel façade. ‘Rust’, including its color, is symbolically seen as being a powerful industrial material, and its texture can represent time, memory, and history of a place. Since the owner of the project also has a long family business history in the fabric industry, taken into account is the contrast between these two materials - rusted steel and soft fabric, as being very interesting. Steel can represent the history of place while fabric can represent history of the owner, and this thinking leads to combine solidity of steel, and softness and lightness of fabric in the design of the building’s façade. Rusted perforated steel sheet is to be applied as the main material for most of the building façade, with the main front façade made up of laser cut steel sheets. During the day the building stands as a static, solid and heavy object, while at night the internal light and movement of people provides a sense of mobility to it.

The seminar entitled ‘The Renovation Z: Design & Renovation of Old Buildings’ will elaborate on how to design and renovate old buildings to realize new functionality. One such example is to renovate a traditional shop house to become an office or hostel. A restoration and renovation like this will not only revitalize the building but also allow the architect to showcase their creativity and adaptability. The seminar on ‘Thai-Ness: Thai Brand Thai Architecture’ will raise the question on whether Thai uniqueness and the Thai identity even exists. If so, how does it exist as an architectural concept, and what are the next steps? Experts from many fields such as architecture, interior design, and advertising maintain that the world is multicultural place, and it is necessary to clarify where we come from and how we react with the world around us. All while maintaining our self-identity to live in harmony with our own lifestyle. the discussions remain client focused, to reflect the true purpose of architecture and design. A keen understanding of location and on existing building styles is required to dive into new design languages. Furthermore, it is important to understand the community, user requirements and user character. Architecture should also emphasize sustainability concerning local materials and local craftsmanship in order to create jobs in the community. The role of architects includes raising the quality of life for people in their country. Their duty is not limited only to design but also includes being responsible for maintaining a peaceful society for everyone.

URBAN / COMMUNITY
THAI URBAN DESIGNERS ASSOCIATION The purpose of the scheme is to integrate design theory, thinking process and public participation in the form of community design. These portfolios are accumulated from various sectors including government, private enterprises, educational institutes, as well as other associations like Khon Kaen Town Regeneration Programme, The Icon Siam, Asiatique 2, Tha Maharaj Pier Project, River Route Rail Link Project, Port Development Project by Marine Department and Express Way, and Crown Property Bureau Project. Besides, the incorporation of these agencies not only offers greater potential in terms of urban design and its evolution, but it also demonstrates the mission of Thailand Urban Designers Association as playing a significant part to drive the society to strive for the best.
COMMUNITY ARCHITECT + YOUTH Focus on incorporated design process can be found in several projects such as Baan Sabai Ta Yai (The Grannies’ house of Comfort), Community Design curriculum, a project that takes on the collaborative approach with teachers and students’ participation in the design of their school, and the design of the learning center in collaboration with the local artisans after the Chiang Rai earthquake.

THEME The most important objective of the Architect Expo is to serve as a center of information exchange and to provide space for participants to showcase their artwork. The event is open to Thai architects to promote themselves and to step onto the global stage. By leveraging this exposure to international standards, the international design fair supports Thailand’s entry to the AEC. The exhibition is presented in the form of a museum and art gallery, with the display of materials, products, innovation and new design. The event will also provide the public with a better understanding of the various roles played by architects in society and their communities. This opportunity is not limited only to Thai professionals, but ASEAN architects can also contribute. The overarching framework of the event is the concept ‘ASA NEXT | Thai Identity’ which conveys the birth of innovation, development and a step forward into the future. IDEA The charm of ‘Thainess’ as a design aspect, is the combination of every detail seen as a whole; naturally in accordance with the environment without fixed or specific principles. This concept is incorporated into the ‘ASA NEXT | Thai Identity’ theme. The graphic design for the event is inspired by Thai style mural paintings, complete with characteristic motifs and characters. The design reflects the variety of Thai races in a modern way and includes a humorous gimmick of Thai architects appearing as characters. The logo is created from the mixture of Thai and Latin fonts which were integrated to form an attractive and mysterious custom typography. The curiosity of the audience will draw them into the event where they can find answers to their questions.
