While megaprojects may attest to an architectural firm’s success and reputation, it is often those projects of a lesser scale that contain moments of true innovation. These small to medium sized buildings frequently act as fundamental test beds where architects can explore and experiment with form, materiality and functional layout, trying out big ideas on a limited scale. The projects contained within this volume represent an eclectic mix of typology, from coffee shops and showrooms to offices and clubhouses, and an even wider range of architectural ideas that have been executed with panache, passion and personality.

The houses presented here are, at any rate, performative. The buildings’ performances in this sense refer to their ability to modify what they inherit, both in terms of their programm. atic functions and their own design directions. This modification includes taking a stand against what the architects, as well as the inhabitants, foresee. In what is not given, the task of these houses is thus to discover what might possibly be. It is neither resistance nor resignation, but an ability for re-articulation and re-interpretation in order for these houses to continually construct a performative environment through which the inhabitants can envisage their lives.

Wood from the upper floor of the old house was carefully removed and reinstalled both in the old style with some adjustments to meet the owner’s budget. Original wooden door and window frames were installed to the new home and retained their old function. Wood columns, beams, floor and wall planks and even the roof structure were removed and repurposed to be used in each detail of the new house. The old memories live on, and the owner feels more related to the new house, not a stranger in a new box. 018–019

Bespoke steel doors mark thresholds between solid and void, detailed to allow the concrete’s mass and texture to dominate visually. Engineered wood and striated polycarbonate echo the formwork, using more delicate lines. A counter-cum-stair formed within one of the concrete walls yields to a sleek steel bridge across the central void to the opposite wall. The stair bridge takes inspiration from the sky for its color, and the tree outside for its shape, without compromising its status as an industrial object. 038–039

The design concept was derived from a bird’s nest; which was intended to reflect a warm, harmonious home character. The staircase landing, which was the key part of the building’s circulation, was designed to simulate the character of a bird nest. Consequently, residents pass “The Bird Nest” whenever they move across rooms or areas. For better viewing of the home’s surrounding, the bird nest structure was built above a lagoon-styled swimming pool. Space and architecture form were designed in response to the nest’s weaving pattern. 052–053

Bangkok came into existence over 200 years ago. The 103 population grew from a few hundred thousand then to over 10 million today. The people took advan- tage of being at a geographical and cultural crossroads, the centre of 19/06/2014 trading in this region. Many of them were from different cultures and ethnic groups which settled in Bangkok and formed diverse communities. The city’s buildings display the influences of those cultures from the West and the East—which have created an extraordinary fusion of architectural forms. Some buildings and urban landscapes reflect traditional Thai architecture but many of the decorative features originated from other sources. My foreign friends have said that every corner of the city is different, that Bangkok has character. The in fluences of crosscultural trading, patterns of settlement, politics and cultural exchanges created the architectural diversity seen today.

This neo-modernist ‘icon of river living’ was billed as ‘cutting edge and environmentally friendly, the greenest condominium in Thailand’. The scale is epic: 650 dwellings in a north and south tower, 42 and 72 storeys respectively, rising from a five-storey podium with a parkade and resort-style facilities. Pilings plunge to 65 meters below grade; reinforced concrete was used throughout; giant tower cranes rose as each floor was poured during three years of construction. The site bloomed with the colourful hard hats of a 1,500-strong team of workers. Most were housed in a labour camp in Thonburi. Many were from up-country—the people who are the radically. and describes its evolution by looking at its architecture—from the royal capi-
tal founded at Thonburi by King Taksin following the destruction of Ayutthaya, looted and torched by the Burmese in 1767, to the ocean of modernity around the historic centre.
The historic centre recognised today is not Thonburi on the west bank of
the Chao Phraya River but its successor on the east bank, Rattanakosin Island,
established by King Rama I in 1782. He founded the Chakri dynasty and created Bangkok’s enduring architectural identity—and the illusion that the city is an ancient settlement—when he built the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
(Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Those buildings established the Rattanakosin
style, inspired by and intended to recall the glories of Ayutthaya. Founded officially in 1350 after the disintegration of the Sukhothai kingdom, Ayutthaya was sited on an island in the Chao Phraya River, the River of Kings, 80 kilometres
north of Bangkok. It was defensible (until the Burmese onslaught) and accessi-
ble to foreign trade, for which it was an entrepôt and from which it flourished. Its gilded palaces and temples dazzled foreign visitors in its 18th-century heyday, as Bangkok’s Grand Palace complex does now.

The compound is now the Army Internal Audit Office. Its belle-époque villa with Venetian Gothic windows on a tower inspired by a Bavarian castle is visible. On Soi Oriental there is a second building (1919) with a bridge across an alley to the first. Their Venetian elevations have arcades on the ground floor and form a memorable streetscape. The EAC’s ships carried passengers and freight between Copenhagen and Bangkok and other ports in Asia. It became the biggest company in Denmark but foundered in the 1980s, was re-floated, moved out of the original Bangkok office in 1995 and left Thailand in 2010.

ages. The building’s heritage features were conserved along with the circulation plan, starting in the lobby where the original and impressive cantilevered staircase serves all three floors and the frontal corridors. The latter are open like Tuscan loggias on a façade composed in Renaissance style. It is one of many designs by Italian architects who changed the look of Bangkok around the turn of the 19th century. 20 Drum Tower and Clock Tower Sanam Chai Road Sumet Jumsai, Sawan Im-Arrom, 1982 This Siamese-style drum tower rebuilt several times since 1782 housed three drums, one on each level: to mark dawn and dusk; a fire alarm; a warning of enemy attack. Rama III remodelled it as a
Chinese pagoda; Rama IV returned it to Ayutthaya style. Rama V tore it down for Saranrom Park. The nearby clock tower, a fusion of Asian and Western elements piled up like a pagoda, was first constructed inside the Grand Palace for Rama IV. Both towers were reconstructed for the Bangkok bicentennial.
21 Territorial Defence Command 2 Charoen Krung Road Public Works Department, 1924 This theatrical pile of neoclassicism with an arched entrance, Ionic columns and pediments angled dramatically at the corner of Sanam Chai and Charoen Krung roads shows the influence of Italian architects at the Public Works Department. Strictly speaking the style is Beaux-Arts, the predominant form of classicism at the time. Called the Rajavallop Building it was built by Rama VI as barracks for 1st Battalion, King Rama V Royal Guards. The Territorial Defence Command (the Army Reserve Command) has occupied it since 1955. The passage at the entrance leads to an inner courtyard. Two floors of the building were refurbished for the King Vajiravudh Museum, opened in 1999 to celebrate the life of Rama VI and his military interests. The Territorial

Rama IV’s garden at Saranrom Palace was redesigned for Rama V as a royal park and zoo, inaugurated at a garden party attended by the king. It was planned by Henry Alabaster, a deputy British consul who understood botany and surveying and was an advisor to Rama V. The informal layout of paths lends it an English air. The main entrance on Charoen Krung Road has a regal swagger with rusticated and banded gateposts with twin Ionic

wings with fretwork on the eaves and roof ridges. The building was reflected on the surface of the Old City Canal, an idyllic image, almost Venetian, lost when that section of the canal disappeared under the approach road constructed for Phra Pinklao Bridge in 1973.
51 National Gallery 4 Chao Fa Road Carlo Allegri, Mario Tamagno, 1902 The passage into the gallery’s courtyard could be in a palazzo in Italy from where the architects came. It has a double door and a wide corridor leading to a sculpture garden with contemporary art. The biggest exhibit is the oldest—a water tank raised on a structure modelled on the Eiffel Tower. The gallery was originally designed for the Royal Mint which was moved here from the Grand Palace. The mint moved
again around 1970 and the property was transferred to the Fine Arts Department which rehabilitated the heritage building as the National Gallery in 1977. The main salon is a grand, neoclassical room with polished wood floors, Tuscan columns and wall and ceiling mouldings well preserved. The Palladian exterior is as it was in 1902, with round-arched windows alternating with pilasters, stucco patterned like stonework and kite-shaped tiles on the roofs. Rama V’s coat of arms of Siam is centred on the pediment above the old entrance to the two-storey centre block, which is flanked by single-storey
52 Maliwan Palace 39 Phra Athit Road Ercole Manfredi, 1917 European-style mansions were built for royals and senior officials in Banglamphu around the turn of the 20th century. Some survive, having been rehabilitated as offices for government and other agencies. The UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) occupies a former royal villa (19 Phra Athit Road). The Far Eastern Regional Office of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has been at Maliwan Palace since 1949. The big, two-storey house has a whiff of Italian Art Nouveau on the front elevation which faces the river. The entrance is on Phra Athit Road but the house was designed to be accessible by boat, like others nearby with private piers. It was the home of Prince Vorarit, ambassador to Britain and the United States and a minister of public works. Crown Properties took over the property in 1937. During the Second World War, Free Thai agents met their leader, Pridi Banomyong, here and at what is now the Unicef office. The piers were convenient

The property was inherited by a minister of the Royal Household. He built this mansion following the fashion in palace circles for eclectic Western designs. The elevations are Italianate with a loggia connecting two separate structures, both with wide eaves and gabled bays, one with a tower and witch’s hat turret. The tower anchors the composition which looks asymmetric but has a formal ground plan. There is a large and well preserved front garden and a courtyard behind the loggia. The effect is of a miniature Phaya Thai Palace. The Goethe Institute cultural centre was here from 1962 until 1989, when Baan Phra Athit was acquired by Manager Media Group for which it was refurbished and enlarged in similar style (Habita Architects, 1990). An annex at the gate, which has its original posts and fence, is now a restaurant allowing partial access to the site.

plinths symbolise the nation state and its constitution, the king and religion. The wings rise and protect a six-sided pavilion decorated with swords and topped with a symbol of the constitution. The pavilion has six openings alluding to the Party’s principles: sovereignty, safety, prosperity, equality, freedom and public education. The monument’s height and radius, both 24 metres, mark the date of the coup (24 June); the pavilion’s height is 3 metres (June being the third month in the Siamese calendar). Nagas animate the plinths which display bas-relief panels in European social realist style by Corrado Feroci. The panels show the revolutionaries planning the coup, the good life that would result from it and soldiers
solar shading is external; the foyer is a full-height steel and glass atrium, square in plan and impressive. The sidewalk on Rang Nam Road was repaved and planted with trees, a public benefit of this development. The grounds are landscaped and there is a soothing, linear water feature at the entrance to the mall. 126 Suan Pakkad Palace 352–354 Si Ayutthaya Road Suan Pakkad means ‘cabbage garden’ which is what the site was before 1952
when Prince and Princess Chumbhot started a museum of heirlooms and acquisitions. These are displayed in several traditional rural dwellings, most owned by the prince’s family since the 19th century and relocated to this beautiful garden. The princess landscaped the site which includes a lake and a boathouse which exhibits the royal barge of the prince’s father. Next to the barge is the exquisite Lacquer Pavilion, believed to have been part of a 17th-century royal residence at Ayutthaya from where it was moved to Bangkok for reconstruction and conservation. Its panels illustrate Buddhist lore and the Ramakien; the gold-on-black lacquer painting is of exceptional artistry. The property was donated in 1987 to

as guardians of democracy. Subsequent events exposed the régime’s delusions and dictatorship, an irony which heightens the monument’s power to agitate and inspire. It is the city’s prime site for political protest. 82 Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Centre 84 Ratchadamnoen Klang Jittasen Aphaiwong, Pum Malakoul, 1937 The art centre (2013) is an adaptive reuse, by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Ministry of Culture, of one of the avenue’s identical buildings from the era of the People’s Party. The exterior was repaired and repainted to accentuate its
1930s elevations. Inside, partitions from previous occupations were removed and the space stripped back to the original structure, revealing muted colours and textures on concrete posts, beams and brick walls. There are four storeys. The ground floor is almost twice the height of the others. Vertical circulation is by a staircase and an elevator. The interior spaces flow through exhibition areas which are flexible, to accommodate different types and sizes of art. Natural light penetrates from the street. Floors are concrete. Conservation preserved original features and made the interventions reversible. The project fits a 2001 master plan to revitalise Ratchadamnoen with art galleries, cultural centres and museums—to be ‘the Champs Élysées of South-East Asia’. Another intervention in a similar building, the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall (100 Ratchadamnoen Klang) by the Crown Property Bureau, was completed in 2010. Its multimedia exhibit over four floors takes virtual journeys around the old city’s royal, religious, artistic and social heritage.
83 Maha Chesdabodin Pavilion and Plaza Ratchadamnoen Klang at Maha Chai Road 1990 This royal plaza was built on the site of the Chalerm Thai Theatre, demolished in 1989 to make way for it. Film fans once queued around the block for firstrun movies at the theatre which was a component in the remaking of Ratchadamnoen by the People’s Party after the coup of 1932. The plaza’s plan, by Sumet Jumsai, is based on the octagonal form of Mahakan Fort. There is a memorial to Rama III (Prince Chesdabodin before ascending the throne) seated in front of a triptych, and a royal reception pavilion in Siamese style. Public space flows inclusively from the sidewalk on Ratchadamnoen to the plaza. The most welcome benefit this project brought was the revelation of the fantastic roofline of Loha Prasat and Wat Ratchanadda which the movie theatre had obscured.

Despite its usual fun character, Bangkok has been striving to grow up in all aspects beyond just the expectation of a metropolis full of skyscrapers and modern facilities. Better and expanding transportation routes have played a major part in bringing convenience to everyone’s daily plans as well as opportunities for business to try their best in the new areas. A consequence of town expansion during the period 2010-2014 is reflected through the fact that nearly 100 new hotels have been built which focus on distinct design featuring local charms and unique character of their own. Boutique Hostel is a new wave of accommodation type influx into many areas of Bangkok in these recent years aiming to respond to the world tightening its belt trend as well as welcoming the AEC era.
Although since 2010, Bangkok has been embroiled in several political disturbances building fear in those who are not used to the tension in this city of angels, Bangkok remains a place where tourists are the most protected and entertained by all kind of organisations as well as the locals. As of the 2014 Bangkok Shutdown, many travellers make their way skateboarding to observe the scene and brought home some newly designed political souvenirs their fellows would never ever had before. Bangkok is a place where a mix of lifestyle, chaos, culture, civilization, fashion, hospitality the unexpected melt into one small city. Thailand smallHotels: Bangkok 2 is the eleventh in the series of the successful Thailand’s Small Hotels which recommends the readers to small hotels where the number of guestrooms do not exceed 100, and where there is also an emphasis on architectural and interior design. We believe that the philosophy of being small is the ability to create an intimate atmosphere and to be in touch with the hidden beauty in the comfort and convenience of the accommodation. Furthermore, visitors can also experience the sensual art of local living to fulfill their holiday desires.
Rattanakosin The old town district of Bangkok where Temples, Palaces, Markets, and Local life are located adorn the River of Kings or Chao Praya River. The district has always been known for traces of history and cultural aesthetics which most people who visit Bangkok do not dare to miss. Walking and Tuk Tuk are two of the best methods to get the maximum from the old town experience. Khaosarn Road is a centre for the zone most travellers start off their city journey while the Riverside area is currently a location for not only accommodation but also all kinds of bars and restaurants granting a hip, trendy, relaxing atmosphere while watching the sunset disappear over Bangkok’s skyline. 10

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, has earned its reputation as one of the best and most tourist friendly cities in the world. ‘Venice of the East’ is used as the second name for Bangkok as the city is full of rivers and canals and the locals have relied on these waterways along the both sides of the banks for hundreds of years. Furthermore, The Chao Phraya River, the main river of the city is the location for significant landmarks including the Grand Palace which is situated in the center of Ko Rattanakosin, the heart of Thai people and the heart of governance in the past.

DETAIL SERIES The design of details in architecture is at the heart of the creation because building details respond to both esthetics and function. Moreover, architectural details display the relationship and co-operation among designers from each field, as different details are included for their own reasons. These reasons represent the united coherence of all sciences, no matter the style of fins, forms of roofs, gutters, stairs, and other features of a building. Thus the design of details must always come with good architecture. hardcover / English-Thai 240 X 290 mm. / 1.5 Kg.
