Preface Nithi Sthapitanonda

As in 2009, and then 2011 and 2012, our book series of resort design collection received a very warm welcome from our graceful readers. Li-Zenn Publishing has continued the success on published this category up to this year 2016. With supports from all parties and the abundance of spectacular feedback on the previous volumes, we dedicated on compiling and searching through all the resort designs by Thai architects in order to choose the best ones. More than one year was consumed for this new volume to reach the top-notch quality. This volume presents both domestic and international pieces. Some of the projects were anticipated due to unfinished decoration. We willingly spent much time on photography in order to assure all perfect outcomes. We, Li-Zenn Publishing, decided to bring forth the fourth volume of the Resorts by Thai Architects series entitled ‘Peaceful Retreat’. This volume offers a variety of resorts from different project sizes and some unique designs that suit guests’ lifestyle. An exceptional service quality on advanced reservation for the exclusive, such as Presidential Suite Honeymoon Private Island, which earns reputation from its location on the Private Island of Phuket, is presented in this volume as well. Some of the highlights include medium-size resorts like Sala Ayutthaya Hotel in the heart of the ancient city Ayutthaya. This ancient style resort bespeaks the ancient age aesthetics to those guests who fall in love with ancient, historic things. It offers an experience of peaceful environment. Another two resorts which are designed by Thai architects but built in India, Dusit Devarana New Delhi and JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort & Spa, are also displayed in this volume along with four resorts in Phuket, Phangnga and Krabi in Thailand, namely the Naka Phuket, Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach Hotel, Casa de La Flora and The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort. I would like to thank all the eight architecture firms that permitted their work to be published and provided information, photos and drawings, which were essential for the completion of the book. I also would like to thank the editorial team at Li-Zenn Publishing for playing an essential role on editing, proofreading, coordinating and designing. With all these together, we are able to produce such a valuable and amazing book for our readers.

Introduction Suluck Visavapattamawon

Architects are not only the creator of beautiful edifices, they are also the creator of values and trends, of artefacts that will go on to represent their times, and are responsible for the social and behavioural changes that can be influenced by the built environment. The architects presented in this volume are Thai architects who have been shaped and influenced by Thai and Eastern cultural values. From which they derive an eye for delicacy and suppleness, as well as the sensuality and profundity of thought that all goes to inform the basis of their architectural design. The resorts published in this book are projects that were completed between 2013–2015, which means that they would have began around 2010, when the Thai economy began recovering from the global financial crisis of 2008. Economic growth was strong despite the political unrest, while the tourism industry in Asia was expanding in anticipation of the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community. As countries abounding with natural resources, history and culture, both Thailand and India harbour great potential for the conference and tourism industries. The site is the first and most important factor in the design of resorts as it determines the master plan. There needs to be an understanding of the landscape, the condition of the slope, watercourses, flora, sources of water supply, the weather and the different seasons throughout the year. The design should help to enhance the environment and ecology within the project and surrounding environment. Projects located on the mountainside has no beachfront to consider and the challenge to ensure unrestricted views is minimised. Instead, it requires the ability to provide either the fullest immersion or a novel experience of a particular natural setting. Suites, lobby, swimming pool, restaurant and deck are positioned in the best spots from where panoramic views of the vast expanse of sea or the awe-inspiring ranges of the Himalayas can be enjoyed throughout the different times of day in the most tranquil setting. The design of the guestrooms ensure the most commanding prospects by having the accommodation units cantilevered from a slope, though in a way that is in harmony with the natural surrounding. Therefore knowledge of slope stability and the process of cut and fill are needed to facilitate the construction process and ensure that natural watercourses are not disrupted. In some projects, the stacking of building volumes in stepped form can help to reduce the amount of piling work or the need for long cantilevers by using large steel beams that then become a part of the building’s aesthetics.
