The design merges the distinct features of a podium and tower into a sinuous and continuously twisting coil. The form wraps around two vertical light wells in the retail podium and at the same time encloses and exposes a series of exterior courtyards and roof gardens for the hotel. Internal spaces break apart to reveal stepped terraces and vertical gardens.

comes with great responsibility, as the seductive quality of empty form will never replace the integrity and ingenuity of a carefully developed concept. Recent advances in parametric modelling and digital fabrication has enabled the articulation of concepts with greater dexterity and increased accuracy by providing the ability to test, manipulate, and refine ideas through an iterative process of “digital craftsmanship”. This technology has opened the door to challenge conventional notions of space and to explore form in unique and dynamic ways.

As a means of addressing the inherent nature of the construction climate of Thailand, the project attempts to capitalize on the surplus of manual labor available and simultaneously reduce the premium of construction technology required for the assembly of the building. This is an inclusive architecture that integrates tradition and modernity, digital technology and craftsmanship. By embracing advanced technology and concepts as well as ac knowledging local heritage and culture, Central Embassy is an articulation of the search for a perceptive and holistic contemporary architectural language. It is a design that is demonstrative of its time, but rooted in Thai culture and heritage.

The introverted nature of large-scale retail developments dictates that large expanses of exterior facade are opaque and inward facing. These continuous runs of blank wall are taken as an opportunity to provoke visual interaction with the facade through the application of an innovative and bespoke ceramic tile facade system. The intentions of this facade are to create a fluid and highly intricate pattern that will engage viewers and lead their eyes along the wrapping ribbons of the building mass. The resulting dynamic moirĂŠ pattern of the tiles produces a stunning visual effect that changes with each step.

The internal retail spaces are defined by a series of pedestrian canyons that are carved from the interior. As the walls of the canyon pull apart, the floor slabs are articulated as an elastic network of trajectories and perforations linking shopping destinations, sight lines and natural light in a non-linear experience.

Robinson Samut Prakarn

Owner / Developer

Type: Shopping Mall Location: Sukhumvit Road, Samut Prakarn Completion: 2014 Area: 55,450 sq.m. Floor: 3 + 1 Basement

The design concept of this project was inspired by the location of the project: Samut Prakarn, a province enriched with a cultural and physical context that contributed to a dynamic exploration for the architectural team. The word “samut in Thai (meaning sea) in particular sea waves, became an inspiration for the curved lines upon the building plan and facade. A group of slanted columns that mark the main entrance of the building resemble the mangrove trees that are still commonly found in the area. This combination between the curved and the use of color help translate the bulky blocks into a dynamic and fluid-looking building.

The material used went some way to help achieve a unique character for this building and to stand out from the dense context of the site. Aluminum composite, glass and steel were used on the front facade to enhance the sense of fluidity, liveliness and dynamism, which is clearly visible throughout this project.

Opened for business in 1973, Siam Center, developed by Siam Piwat and located in the prime Bangkok downtown area of Siam, is Thailand’s first and most modern shopping center recognized for its internationally-acclaimed standards.

mon perception of and approach to designing a shopping center: a shopping experience that showcases uniqueness and creativity. Under the Ideaopolis concept, the overall design of the new Siam Center is called “Modern Industrial Look” which is a combination of industrial chic and ultra-modern living, with contrasts in appearance and atmosphere. The design plays with unconventional lighting and colors, darkness and light. Steel, glass, wood and stainless steel were utilized in a detailed decoration to create the uniquely magnificent designs for Siam Center. The style promises to have a long-lasting contemporary character for years to come.

Siam Piwat

After 40 years of operation and having been renovated six times, in 2013, Siam Center unveiled its latest total revamp under the concept of “Ideaopolis” - an arena of imagination and creativity without limits in art, fashion, technology or lifestyle. Siam Center has evolved into the center of ideas and inspiration as it boats avant-garde designs and ideas that redefine today’s com-

Inspired by SoHo in New York, where brands, from luxury labels to high street names, left behind their usual store design to blend into the unique environment of the district, Siam Center is the first shopping center in the world in which all of the stores collaborated in creating an exciting and total transformation of a retail space. Thailand’s leading brands and well-known global brands in fashion, lifestyle, and food and beverage, agreed to individually design the most unique concept shops on their own, but also ensured they were aligned with the main unified design concept of Siam Center.

PROJECTS IN PROGRESS

Bangkok Midtown Joice Owner / Developer Property Perfect

Type: Shopping Mall Location: Ratchadapisek Road, Bangkok Completion: 2017 Area: 152,000 sq.m. Floor: 7+2 Basement

Architect: Architects 49 Interior: PIA Interior Landscape: Landscape Architects of Bangkok

Ratchada road is rapidly developing to become Bangkok’s central hub for entertainment and retail by day and night. Vibrant activities line both sides of the road along the entire stretch, which led to the idea of merging the two sides with a bridge. This link will become critical to the animation of the two sides as each end is able to feed into the other, effectively dispersing people into the surrounding areas and creating an energetic vicinity. The project has been designed to target a wide range of individuals and provide access from all modes of transport, including buses and also one thousand parking spaces to create connectivity from outside to inside. Shops occupy the retail outlet, differing in charm, merchandise and even opening hours. The facade features dynamic lines and contours, like a piece of art inspired by the entertainment personality of the district. The emphasis revolved around the circulation flow and a refined layout of retail spaces. There is a large front atrium which acts as the heart of the project and connects all the levels together via a frenzy of escalators. These elements boldly merge to create a unique and iconic symbol of a future destination.

CONVERSATIONS

Kriengsak Tantiphipop The Emporium Group CEO

What is the key concept behind your development?

How are your experiences working with the designers?

How much are creativity and retail development interelated?

The aspirations for this project began in 1997. EM District is the sequel mission for the group (after The Emporium) to create the ultimate luxury shopping and lifestyle destination in Bangkok. Home to global brands, the added combination of EmQuatier and EmSphere adds value, not only as another standalone landmark of Sukhumvit, but also as a representative of the whole area’s lifestyle, which showcases a mixture of culture through its sophisticated and delicate design that allows anyone to enjoy a better quality of life from the inside as well as seeing the entire district in a 360 degree perspective. EM District aims to become part of the “architecture of life, where humans play a major role in keeping the building alive.

The selection of designers was based on their profound understanding of art, function, and design, such as New York specialists in museum design and traffic circulation were selected and teamed up with a French designer to add a sophisticated accent to the estate. The cooperation of top class Thai designers with a keen eye and passion in modern and stylish work was required in order to drive the project smoothly into the desired direction. As the concept of this architecture was rather abstract, it involved hard work in every process from the designers and partners. This involved the production of 1,080 pieces of GRC stones in individual molds and sizes and shapes, assembling each two-ton piece on the free form structure, levelling each retail space to the sloped floor, along with finishing touches. Without any expectation, the project also received The Best Asia Design Award.

Positioning the compound as an urbanized luxury lifestyle mall, the design of EM District maintains its magnificent appearance while serving as a living space where humans can be in touch with nature. Appearing as if a cloud in the wind, EmQuatier is the interpretation of the initial concept of organic form. The open-space is designed to bring in the sky, park, or sunset through the windows of every retailer where a 360 degree view is granted to serve fast-paced urbanites who usually spend most of their time inside closed walls, while the green areas, fully packed with all sorts of plants, are provided for those who seek balance in their lives. With the distinctive slope and amber walkway, all visitors will appreciate the quality of life, where even those with wheelchairs and prams can take their share of happiness with their family or loved ones.

What are some of your new ideas and innovations that will energize and drive the retail development? To fulfil the unfinished vision of living standard leverage, EmSphere, situated on a 700,000-square meter site, is a project that will take us to the next stage of evolution. Designed to encircle Benjasiri Park, EmSphere is not only an incredible shopping paradise packed with complete facilities but also a heaven of culture, where large lush green areas with plenty of shade will provide people with a moment to let go of their stress or just a pause for a daydream during the hectic hours. Compared to the rest of the nation, this is only a small enterprise with a big dream hoping to begin the development for the country from this quarter known as EM District.
