For over eight years, Thai architecture has witnessed a dynamic and increasing trend towards the use of steel as part of building and interior design. Architects, engineers, interior designers, builders, and furniture makers now use steel as a primary building material, with confidence and efficiency. Li-Zenn Publishing has inspired the design industry’s enthusiasm each year by compiling a selection of diverse projects, featuring their concepts and creativity. Thailand Architecture in Steel Series is proof of the flourishing construction industry in Thailand, which is apparent in the range of large steel construction projects such as malls, skyscrapers, office buildings and private residences. As steel structures reduce construction time, contractors are becoming more adept at working with steel, and there is continued support from steel producers. In this new publication, there are 33 prominent design projects from 23 architectural firms. These projects are considered outstanding examples of the use of steel. I would like to thank the new wave of architects and interior designers who have turned their attention to the development of steel related design, and have encouraged its progress. Thank you to the Li-Zenn Publishing team for their help in coordinating this publication, and special thanks to all the sponsors who have supported the printing costs, during the age of disruption. I hope the quality of the works featured in this edition demonstrates the progression of skills and knowledge, from design to construction, of Thai professionals in this industry.

Power Wing Openbox Architects and Openbox Group

Power Wing is an iconic landmark piece located at B Grimm Power’s Headquarters Office. Engaged to help promote awareness of the importance of renewable energy, the design team created a sculptural solar-paneled parking roof, which is not only visually stunning, but successfully conveys the message of the dynamism of sustainable energy. Openbox design team studied the headquarters layout and proposed to utilize the most visible location from the main road. B.Grimm Power is the leading professional firm in solar energy. The design is an integration between architecture and nature. In order to create a more dynamic form, each solar panel was arranged in various angles according to energy waves to create “The Power Wing.” It was inspired by B.Grimm corporate’s values, the solar panels demonstrating the unity of people in their corporation. The piece of art itself showcases a feat of engineering by revealing the steel skeleton of a 50-meter piece of art supported by only two columns, with a grand cantilever and solar panel installations. This symbolizes mankind’s achievements in structural and energy engineering. On the underside of the structure are dashes of terracotta orange representing B.Grimm Power’s corporate color. More than just a visual landmark, the sculpture symbolizes a connection between engineering and art, that should be perceived as ONE.

Sala Bang Pa-In Restaurant DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE CO. Sala Bang Pa-In Restaurant is part of Sala Bang Pa-In Resort in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Thailand. The architectural design is a contemporary re-interpretation of the local rural landscape, aiming to connect people to the river and its atmosphere. The open-air restaurant allows guests to enjoy the uninterrupted experience of nature and connection to the river with a touch of light breeze. Multiple pitched white fabric roof, whose form resonates with the vernacular village skyline, transforms the natural light into a uniquely soft atmospheric spatial radiance. The high roof with air gap details draws hot air upwards and out, filling the functional space below with comfortable cool air. The structure supporting the roof is a system of crisscrossing slim steel tubes, making the overall architecture feel lightweight while defining the internal space with an interesting visual aesthetic. With the restaurant’s open concept design, the main fixed items such as the bar counter, shelves and some main furniture are not only interior design items but, in fact, are integral parts of the architecture itself. Brick was selected as the main material, which is reminiscent of historical Ayutthaya, and is muted with white paint. The construction of the brick shelving creates a sense of surprising weightlessness, almost as if the bricks are floating in mid-air. This is a contemporary tectonic twist of the age-old traditional material. Loose furniture is designed to exude a sense of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and its craftsmanship through natural wood and wickerwork.

LCG (Laemthong Food Product Factory & Office) PHTAA LIVING DESIGN LCG factory and office renovation rejuvenizes underutilized space between the office and production building, and the canteen and workers’ facilities. Used as a loading bay in the morning and evening, this space remains vacant during the day. A sheltered courtyard was created to provide a meeting zone. Relocating the canteen to the office and production building, next to the new courtyard, allows staff to mingle, breaking down the company hierarchy. The clerestory structure in the courtyard uses 10 mm thick vertical aluminum fins in varying angles, creating a change in opacity from open to closed in a rhythmic wave-like pattern. This also allows the wall to efficiently catch the breeze. Similarly, the roof uses 20 mm graded opacity polycarbonate sheets of three different levels to diffuse the lighting in the courtyard. Two planter-box trees add a central focus to the courtyard and seating for staff during breaks. A platform at the entrance to Building B, provides staff a space for breaks or lunch. The 10 mm folding steel platform is supported by thin steel columns which do not interrupt the horizontal lines of the building facade and stairs, giving a feeling of levitation. Horizontal fiber cement louvres on the second-floor windows of Building A are angled such that staff inside the building can view the green space in front of the building while screening the busy road beyond. A new external staircase to this second-floor rests on a steel H beam, retaining the industrial feel of the factory.

Shade House AAD DESIGN (AAD) Location Bang Phli, Samut Prakan Structural / System Engineer: AAD design (AAd) Area 950 sq.m. Year 2020

Shade House AAD design (AAd)

Shade House’s minimal footprint was achieved by creating a three-story residence with separate parking in front. This increased the green area to over 60%, double the minimum requirement of Bangkok regulations. Along with pocket gardens throughout the house and a green roof, the house boasts 90% overall green space. Once vegetation is fully grown and covers the elevations of the house, the green area will be up to 150% larger than its initial size. With all the living spaces on the upper floors, each room is likened to a treehouse. Tree leaves and bushes not only provide refreshing foliage for the residents, but also serve as a natural buffer, protecting the house from the outsiders’ eyes. The living room façades maintain the signature of AAd’s façade design – using the air gap and perforated aluminum panels to prevent heat retention, as well as allowing sunlight and air ventilation to pass through. During summer, these panels have shown to reduce the 39˚C temperature outside to 26˚C inside. The main design concept of Shade House is to create an ecosystem. AAd planned to design a series of spatial experiences by integrating a variety of landscapes around the house. The design team interprets this white house as a white canvas with which the owners can create their own painting by planting colorful trees and flowers. As time goes by, the greenery will engulf the white background, as the architects intended, while the family ages serenely and naturally as the trees grow along with the house.

TCDC Khon Kaen Architects 49

TCDC Khon Kaen aims to provides a space which supports the flourishing of Isan creativity. Large trees are a blessing in this arid region, and community activities often take place under the shade of such trees. Gatherings and interaction also take place in the undercroft of traditionally elevated Thai houses. This provides shade from the sun while moving from house to house. The design drew inspiration from these characteristic community gathering places. Trees surrounding the elevated structure and the welcoming site plan allows convenient access. TCDC activities promote interaction. As such, the street-side façade was created to communicate with the passersby. Rotatable, reflective panels act as shades, and also function as mirrors providing a glance into the activities within and without. These panels are also used to announce activities within the center through words and patterns on the façade in a creative, card-stunt fashion. The exposed steel frame structure is one of the main design elements of both the interior and the exterior. It facilitates easy and accessible maintenance. The most challenging part of the structure is the facade frame, which is the highlight of the design. Spanning 8-meters, this cantilevered structure connects the building to the public space in front. Vertical flat bars combined with slings pull the upper and lower beam of the facade. Thus, the steel beam forces transfer back to the concrete column and beam at the back of the building. This elevates the front facade and creates a welcoming entrance, inviting people into the project.

Nurse Dormitory, Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital PLAN ARCHITECT “Nurse Dormitory Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital” or “Nawarachupatum”, the royal name bestowed by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, is a dormitory for nurses at Chulalongkorn Hospital, The Thai Red Cross Society. The 26-floor, 523-room building is surrounded by four existing doctors’ and nurses’ dormitories. The layout of the new dormitory interacts with three existing building by creating an enclosed courtyard, separated from the bustle of the hospital. An open space connects the main road with the courtyard, metaphorically acting as a gateway into this peaceful residential area. It was noted that most of the nurses preferred naturally ventilated rooms and balcony gardening was a popular pastime. Thus, 2 single-load corridor buildings were designed, allowing more natural light into the corridor and creating a chimney effect that facilitates ventilation from basement to rooftop. The design of the façade drew inspiration from the original Thai Red Cross Society’s logo. As the dormitory is close to adjacent buildings, the balcony is designed at an angle to avoid direct sightline and maintain the privacy. The zigzag balcony allows more sunlight to the area making it suitable for gardening and drying clothes. The vertical aluminum fin railing and perforated aluminum sheet sunshade conceal untidy elements such as drying racks, air conditioner condensing units, and washing machines. Aluminum was chosen for the façade for its durability and ease of maintenance. This unique facade and balcony composition creates the pattern of light and shadow, reflecting the simple systematic design of the building while concealing functional requirements.
