By cleverly sliding part of the upper floor to the south of the floor beneath it, the architect has optimised midday shading whilst adding extra height and interest to the downstairs living areas. The inclusion of a simple perforated brick wing wall on the west of the north-facing terrace further enhances shading later in the day. The full height north facing glazing in the living space has openable clerestory glazing at its upper level to encourage natural ventilation.

Second floor kitchen and dining areas with bedrooms above.

Entry to this tree-lined site is from the east, with entrance to the dwelling itself being made either formally through the entrance foyer within the covered carport at ground level, or through the south-facing garden, the upper level of which provides access to the second floor via a timber terrace. The entrance foyer and the north face of the stairwell are designed to surprise and delight, being flooded with diffuse daylight through opaque glazing. External wooden roller blinds on the upper levels cast subtle shadows against them as ascent is made. The view to the outdoors is intentionally prohibited until the stairway is climbed and the individual turns to be greeted with views of Nature.

The roller blinds provide freedom for transformation.

The incorporation of timber roller blinds greatly contributes to the character of this scheme.

The living room, with its views to the outdoors, is double height and leads on to the dining and kitchen areas, all of these have access to the raised terrace to the south. It also features an upper walkway that traverses its length to provide access to the bedroom area on the next floor. An additional stairway continues to the floor above where the other bedrooms, terrace, toilets and showers are located. This home is a play on contrasts and variety that pulses with life.

The view of the project from the canal is inspired by the groupings of traditional Thai buildings often found in such areas where various roof slopes of different heights and angles are found intermingled with each other. A rigorous discipline has been employed to allow this abstraction to be utilised to maximum benefit related to views and function. The coffee shop, with a tree growing through one of its decks, provides an effective visual screen to the more private parts of this captivating project. It is placed at the front of the property facing the main street so it can be easily seen and accessed by visitors.

BIG’s house is located in a medium density residential area of Bangkok, and is surrounded by 2 and 3-storey private dwellings with a 5-storey apartment to the east of its site. Its main design concept is one of unity, balancing the duality of privacy and openness.

The spaces around the core act as semi-outdoor and semi-public space for multipurpose use. The use of patterned blockwork provides a strong visual statement that is both practical and visually pleasing.

The main stairway was specifically designed to act as an open-screened lightwell providing natural light and ventilation to all three floors. Through clever design, spaces surrounding it provide semi-outdoor and semi-public space for multi-purpose use. The use of inexpensive concrete ventilation blocks within the scheme minimises direct sunlight whilst providing privacy and visual connectivity.

This house design is the result of a coupling between reductive modernist architecture and Feng Shui brought about through rigorous collaboration between the client, the client’s Feng Shui master and the designer team. The concept for its plan originated from the classical Feng Shui Bagua - the octagonal tool used to analyse the Chi (energy) of any given space. The Bagua was then unfolded, transforming it into a nine square Lo Shu grid. The eight squares along its periphery symbolise the fundamental principles of reality and surround the centre where the Chi originates. Dualistically, the nine square plan also coincides with John Hejduk’s famous nine square grid exercise, which he introduced to teach the fundamentals of architectural form; making the design a culmination of traditional Chinese philosophy and architectural design theory of the 20th century. The square plan has an open center courtyard, receiving Chi from the sky and sunlight that reflects from lucky stones into surrounding rooms. Referring to the Yin-Yang principle, the dwelling is Yin (the static force) while the inhabitants are Yang (the dynamic force). When they occupy the house, the forces are complemented and harmonised - once life enters space, the architecture is balanced and complete.
