INTRODUCTION by Suluck Visavapattamawon
Small Medium Houses 7 is a compilation of 33 remarkable projects, most of which are based on the common principles of simplicity and functionality. All modern houses selected to be featured in this volume contain numerous interesting ideas and solutions as follows:
1
2
4
3
Simple and open plan layout - The houses plan is simple and straightforward. The functional spaces are arranged in an uncomplicated order, placing the living area next to the dining space and the kitchen. Moreover, the open plan layout is used to blend all functions of the home together and to support the inclusion of a common area. Connect courtyard to the house visually and physically Apart from allowing cross-ventilation, the inner courtyard equips the house with a sense of seclusion and privacy from neighbors as well as the views into the green space from most of the rooms. Mingle with the surrounding nature - Open-air covered spaces are added to create in-between areas in the forms of terraces, foyers, living areas, swimming pools and playgrounds.

The use of screens in various patterns and materials Screens bring a unique character to the house that remains warm and not overly modernized. Moveable wooden shutters provide the options of the openness during the day and the secrecy at night. Suitable double-height ceiling - The high ceiling allows a dissipation of heat towards windows and promotes natural low-level cooling for the living space. When combined with the cross ventilation, this floor-to-ceiling height reduces the dependency on air-conditioning and creates a sense of spaciousness. The boundary between the inside and outside is blurred The large glass planes maintain the existence of the boundary while subtly merging the interior and exterior with the materiality in order to embrace the beautiful presence of nature.
24
25
A simple palette of materials - Materials, colors, and textures are carefully selected to match with the design and environment. The brick is particularly popular for generating a sense of warmth and intimacy. Deformed roof - Traditional Thai gable roof is modified into something interesting by deforming and reorganizing its layer according to the required internal volume so that a more dynamic structure can be created.
30
31
All of these have been achieved with the intention that the subtlety and peacefulness are maintained and the complexity needs to be avoided in order to offer a proper residential sense for the occupants.

This Bangkok house was designed for a five-member family who used to live in an old wooden house but required a new format of accommodation in order to better suit their current living requirements. The site itself is narrow in width and of a strip shape enclosed between the neighbors’ houses. To optimize the site’s potential, the architects maximized the footprint to the regulation’s limits, creating an inside area that would be as large as possible. Blind walls at both sides of the house were further utilized to provide a sense of privacy from the nearby neighbors.

Exterior façade combined existing and new building.
This renovation project located in a housing estate in Bang Phli, Bangkok began in response to the client’s need to expand the space to accommodate their newborn child as well as improve the exterior and interior design to suit their new lifestyle. The existing building was constructed from a precast concrete structure with a typical contemporary hip roof style and, by the time the architect met the client, there was already a modern reinforced concrete expansion building situated next to the existing precast one under construction. A challenge posed by the renovation was, therefore, how to combine these two different styles of buildings as the structure of the existing precast building could not be modified due to safety issues. Thus, the architect decided to build a new structure in front to frame the two buildings together with a sleek design language.

One distinctive feature of the building is a terrace covered by a façade situated in the front of the home that feels very much as if it were floating. The designer further selected a transparent façade material to cover the front porch area on the second floor that originally supported the garage roof. This area was given the new function of housing a balcony area covered with an aesthetic layer of geometric wood. The translucent façade material changed the overall look of the original building, causing the entire structure to feel more modern while also allowing for the residents to increase the sense of privacy by choosing to open or close the façade itself depending on the desired usage requirements. When all the windows are closed, the material appears transparent and allows for very little movement inside the home to be seen. When opened, the space feels as if it is connected to the outside environment and welcomes the play of light and shadow throughout the day.

Taking inspiration from the town’s cultural heritage and its contemporary vibes, this house proposes a contemporary use of brick as the main building material. The layout of the house resembles the spatial arrangement of a traditional Thai house where the kitchen and service area, living room, guest bedrooms, and owner’s bedroom are separated into several units, resulting in a group of buildings connected via an outdoor communal area.

To make the most of the rectangular 12x24-meter plot of land, the layout of the house was segmented into three sections with two courtyards set in between. In addition to enhancing good wind flow throughout every room of the house, the layout also provides courtyard spaces for planting. On the second floor, a planter was integrated at the front of the house, providing privacy for the bedroom that faces the local street. Another planter was additionally added in the courtyard, connecting the green space to the bedroom. On the third floor, where the roof is, a planter one meter in height doubles as a railing and occupies approximately half of the total area, leaving a flat surface for other functional uses such as a dining table, an urban farm, and a clothes drying area. Overall, trees grow on every floor from the ground up to the roof.
