Ross and SJCC Welcome New Head Coaches
TABLE OF CONTENTS
By Jon Kerns, BAS Sports Network Both Fremont high schools will start the 2016 football season with new head coaches. However, neither Chad Long of Ross or Brian Spicer of St. Joe are new to the area. Long is a Clyde native who played football for the Fliers before become a Bowling Green Falcon. After college, Long has coached both football and wrestling at a few area schools, including Ross where he goes from head wrestling coach to head football coach. Long takes over for Craig Yeast, whose two-year record for the Little Giants was 11-10, including a trip the playoffs in 2014. The Little Giants lost six games in 2015, but four of those losses were to playoff teams whose combined record was 39-11, including a 6-4 playoff mark. Ross loses some 16 players to graduation, but a good number of incoming seniors and juniors return with valuable experience. Ross will start the season with non-conference foes Springfield, Sylvania Southview and Sandusky before heading into the always-tough Three Rivers Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, Brian Spicer moves from Woodmore to St. Joe Central Catholic in taking over a Crimson Streak team that was winless in 2015. Spicer’s first year at Woodmore in 2014 resulted in no wins for the Wildcats, but he turned things around last season with four victories. Spicer and his staff hope to increase the numbers in the SJCC football program. St. Joe lost six players to graduation but eight incoming seniors return for 2016. The Streaks will have four games inside the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division with the addition this year of Please turn to Page 5

Ross and SJCC Welcome New Head Coaches Continued from Page 3 Tiffin Calvert and Margaretta, joining Sandusky St. Mary and Lakota. The non-league schedule will be a challenge and includes Mohawk, Norwalk St. Paul, Gibsonburg, Danville, Oak Harbor and Crestline. The Gibsonburg Golden Bears have won 19 of their last 20 regular season games over the past two seasons, including a perfect 10-0 mark in 2015. After claiming the Toledo Area Athletic Conference championship, the Bears qualified for the Division VI playoffs, but lost to Van Buren during the first round. Head coach Steve Reser loses 11 seniors off last year’s team but will welcome back several returning letter winners, including experienced skilled players. The Bears open their season August 26 at home with Elmwood.
Troy Albright takes over as head coach at Lakota, replacing Shane Jacoby. In 2015, the Raiders posted a 4-6 overall record for the second straight year and were 1-1 in the Sandusky River League. Lou Bosh returns for his second stint as Woodmore head coach after Brian Spicer moved to Fremont St. Joe. Bosh coached the Wildcats from 1998-2009 and hopes to continue the momentum after Woodmore won four games in 2015 after going winless the season before. Paul Patterson starts his third year at Genoa. The Comets were 5-5 last season after going 8-3 in 2014. Veteran coach Jerry Rutherford returns for another season at Eastwood. The Eagles had a rare losing season in 2015, going 4-6 overall.

Flier and Redmen Football Action on 92.1 The Wolf WOHF By Jon Kerns, BAS Sports Network The Clyde Fliers are coming off another successful football season, when in 2015 they were co-champions of the Sandusky Bay Conference and qualified for the Division III playoffs. In the postseason, Clyde avenged their only regular season loss by defeating Perkins before losing to powerhouse Toledo Central Catholic. Their final record was 10-2. Clyde head coach Ryan Carter begins his fourth year with a team that is expected to win the Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division. Lutz Opening New Era of Columbian Football By Tommy Hall, BAS Sports Network
TIFFIN— Tiffin native Judd Lutz has made his way back closer to his roots this year. Ten years after his last down at Frost-Kalnow Stadium as player, Lutz will be stepping back on the turf in a different role, taking over as head football coach of the Columbian Tornadoes . He takes over after the vacancy left by current Hopewell-Loudon head coach, Brian Colatruglio. Even as a novice in his first campaign as a head coach, Lutz has built an impressive football pedigree over the past decade and knows what’s expected out of a program he is all too familiar with. As a player, he was named All-Ohio, all-district and
all-conference selection for coach Steve Gilbert at TC. In college, Lutz played under the tutelage of Mount Union’s legendary coach, Larry Kehres taking part in two Division III National Championship teams and was an All-American in both football and track. For the past six seasons, Lutz has been an assistant football coach at Avon High School sitting under the learning tree of Coach Mike Elder. Under Elder, the Eagles have won four West Shore Conference Championships and have been a playoff perennial throughout the early aughts. The Tornadoes lost 14 seniors to graduations, but will be bringing back a wealth of familiar faces for the upcoming season. On the offensive side, Todd Simonds returns for his Junior campaign behind Center. TC also looks for leadership roles from seniors Daniel Bupp, Tyle Eisenhower, Jacob Vrancken, ‘Ro Durham, Jared Akers and Mason Hill. Each competing to fill the slot positions. TC Hallett, Andy Schalk, Guy Traxler and Donovan Solomon look to anchor the offensive line. CJ Enke and Donovan Magill Continued on Page 31 22

Knox County Football Preview By Tyler Mathias, BAS Sports Network
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket Football team will be looking for stability this season with their third head coach in three years with Mike Kerr taking the position. The Jackets finished 5-5 last season under Justin Todd, losing their final three games of the season to miss the playoffs. Mount Vernon did not beat a team with a winning record last season and lost record-setting quarterback Mason Williams to graduation. The Jackets move into a new conference too as they are now in the Ohio Cardinal Conference but can’t compete for the conference title this season. Mount Vernon finishes this season with three home games.

The Fredericktown Freddies made the playoffs last season under first-year head coach Will Hartley but they are going to have to try to make a return trip to the postseason without last year’s quarterback Dillon Smith who transferred. The Freddies upset the number one seed in the first round of the playoffs and eventually fell to Grandview Heights to end their run. The Freddies had two win streaks of at least four games last year. They last missed the playoffs in 2013. Another new man takes over at Centerburg High School as Andy Colella, who coached the defense for the Continued on Page 31

2016 Tiffin Calvert Football Season Preview By Nate Mullins, BAS Sports Network Tiffin Calvert is coming off of a roller coaster of a season that saw them go from starting the season at 1-4 to knocking off #2 seed Hicksville in the opening round of the 2015 OHSAA playoffs. The Senecas finished the 2015 campaign with a 6-6 record after a tough loss to Lucas in the playoffs, and they lost a talented group of seniors to graduation. Quarterback Drew Ritzler was part of a graduating class that included playmaking TE Devin Stith and starting running back Adam Recker. Replacing Ritzler will not be easy, but luckily for the next signal caller they will have plenty of targets to throw to. Senior Corbin Kantner gives the Senecas a huge red-zone target, as he tallied 12 touchdowns last year and hauled in 69 passes to the tune of 890 yards. Senior Alex Keller is also someone to keep an eye on down near the goal line, as he hauled in 34 receptions and 704 yards to go along with 6 touchdowns. Robby Paul gives the Senecas a nice slot compliment to the taller outside receivers, as a sophomore last year he caught 21 passes for 396 yards and 3 scores. Replacing Adam Recker will be senior Fred Fabrizio, who came on in relief of Recker last year to post some impressive numbers in limited action. Fabrizio carried the ball 150 times for a total of 828 yards, a 5.5 yard per carry average, to go along with 11 touchdowns. On defense, look for Andrew Brodman to
Lutz Opening New Era of Columbian Football Continued from Page 22 will handle the carries and Cody Scheer returns at Tight End. Defensively, Simonds, Eisenhower, Enke and Akers will battle for roles at defensive back. Hill, Kenny Knott, Solomon, Bupp, Scheer, Magill and Vrancken compete for the Mike, Will and Sam Linebacker position. Traxler and Schalk also pair to lead inside the trenches of the Defensive line. Jared Luzader returns to compete for kicking duties. After a 4-6 record in 2015 and back-to-back seasons without a playoff appearance, the Tornadoes will have a new season to turn things around. Tiffin Columbian will open its season on the road against the Clyde Fliers on August 26. The Tornadoes look to avenge a 15-8 loss suffered in the season opener of last year.
continue to make an impact, as he was consistently in the backfield tallying 20 tackles for loss and 9 sacks in the 2015 campaign. The Senecas face some early competition, but like last season if they can weather the early storm they have a chance to finish the season on a strong note and make another postseason run. It will largely depend on the identity the offense takes on from the start of the season. They started the season last year as a running team only to go towards a passing attack towards the end of the year, which worked to perfection at times with Ritzler under center. Depending on who the new signal caller will be, the Senecas figure to start the season with a heavy ground attack, but as he has proven in the past, Coach Todd Fox is great at making adjustments in season and highlighting the strengths of his team while masking their weaknesses.
Knox County Football Continued from Page 29 Trojans last year, will be the head man. Centerburg returns their starting quarterback from a year ago in Gunnar Gregory. The Trojans finished last season 6-4, winning their final three games outscoring opponents 161-43. The Danville Blue Devils will be in a weird position this year without last year’s quarterback Ridge Durbin, who broke records but graduated this past season and was the Division 7 Player of the Year. The Blue Devils fell to Mogadore in the State Semifinals behind the star quarterback and a veteran cast around him. Though Ridge is gone, it is expected that his brother Skyler will take over this year. Danville finished unbeaten in the regular season last year. 31

Sandusky Area Football Season Review/Preview By Mark Fogg, BAS Sports Network
The Northern Ohio League had one playoff team last season with the Bellevue Redmen advancing all the way to the Regional Championship game before falling to Columbus Bishop Hartley, 28-20. Bellevue enters this season as the defending Champion in the Northern Ohio League’s last year in exitence. The Redmen were unbeaten last year in league play. They were followed by Sandusky at 5-1 and Shelby at 4-2. The Sandusky Bay Conference put four teams in the playoffs last year ... Clyde, Perkins, Edison and Port Clinton. The Chargers advanced the farthest, moving all the way to the State Semi-Finals before losing to Canton Central Catholic, 17-14.

The Sandusky Bay Conference will be a two-division format this year with the Bay Division and the River Division. Next season, the SBC becomes even larger when schools from the Northern Ohio League will make it a three-division conference. This year’s SBC Media Day was held on July 25th in Huron. Both coaches and media selected Clyde as the favorite in the Bay Division with Calvert the pick in the River Division. St. Mary Central Catholic won their second consecutive Sandusky River League Championship last year. The Panthers became the only SRL team to ever qualify for a playoff spot, but lost in the first round to Warren John F. Kennedy.
