Fremont Ross, St. Joe CC Featured On Eagle 99 By Jon Kerns, BAS Sports Network
Both Fremont high schools will start the 2017 football season with secondyear head coaches looking to keep their programs headed in the right direction. Chad Long’s Ross Little Giants finished last season with a 3-7 record, including 2-5 inside the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. A very tough schedule was partly to blame for the sub-par season, since the seven losses were to teams with a combined overall record of 57 wins and 22 losses. Five of those teams qualified for the state playoffs. One of the bright spots of the 2016 season was a solid 38-29 win over Toledo St. John’s Jesuit, a team that finished 6-4 on the year. Ross loses 15 players to graduation, including five key skilled position players, but a good number of incoming seniors and juniors return with valuable experience. Ross will play the same non-conference schedule as in 2016. The Little Giants will take on Springfield, Sylvania Southview and Sandusky with only the Southview game on the road. Brian Spicer, who moved from Woodmore to St. Joe Central Catholic a year ago, took over a Crimson Streak team that was winless in 2015. The Streaks won four games last season, including the season’s final three games against Crestline, Lakota and Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic. Spicer and his staff have managed to increase the numbers in the SJCC football program. While St. Joe lost eight players to graduation, a number of players return for 2017. The Streaks will have five games inside the River Division of the Sandusky Bay Conference, including Willard, Margaretta, Tiffin Calvert, Sandusky St. Mary and Lakota. The non-conference schedule will be another challenge with Cardinal Stritch, Norwalk St. Paul, Gibsonburg, Port Clinton and Toledo Woodward. The Gibsonburg Golden Bears have won 27 of their last 30 regular season games over the past three seasons. In 2016, the Bears claimed a share of the Please turn to Page 10

Fremont Ross, St. Joe CC Continued from Page 3 Toledo Area Athletic Conference championship with Montpelier. Their 8-2 overall record earned them a trip to the Division VI playoffs, but they lost on the road to Bucyrus Wynford 22-6 in the first round. Head coach Steve Reser loses 11 seniors off last year’s team but will welcome back several letter winners, including experienced skilled players. The Bears open their season August 25 at Elmwood. Mike Lento takes over as head coach at Lakota, his first head coaching job after several years as an assistant at Fremont Ross and Port Clinton. Lento is both a St. Joe and Tiffin University graduate. In 2016, the Raiders posted a 2-8 overall record and were 0-4 in the River Division of the Sandusky Bay Conference. Lou Bosh, who returned for his second stint as Woodmore head coach a year ago, looks to get the Wildcats more wins in 2017. Woodmore had 1-9 record after last season, but two of those losses were by four points or less. Clyde Paul Patterson starts his fourth year at Genoa. The Clyde Fliers claimed a share of the 2016 Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division football championship with Edison and Port Clinton. The Fliers defeated Edison in the regular season but lost to Port Clinton. Clyde’s 8-2 regular season earned them a spot in the Division III playoffs, where they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Lexington 29-28. Clyde head coach Ryan Carter enters his fifth year as head coach, sporting an
overall 40-10 record, two SBC titles and four trips to the playoffs. Clyde is a member of the Lake Division of the Sandusky Bay Conference along with Bellevue, Norwalk, Perkins, Sandusky and Tiffin Columbian. The annual Battle of Route 20 between Clyde and Bellevue will mean more than ever this year. truly get them to connect with each other, building the strongest bonds as a team and driving them to play at their best, for each other. Now in their junior seasons, Austin Jones is expected to lead the ground game, while Nic Somodi has the potential to break out as yet another wide receiver option for Hemminger. On the defensive side of things don’t be surprised to see junior Josh Recker getting his jersey dirty alongside senior Joe Shirley, who proved himself in some clutch situations last year. Keep an eye out for senior Joe Stover who made his name known quite a few times down in the trenches during the 2016 campaign. Calvert proved in the 2016 season they were not to be taken lightly, finishing 4-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division.
The Tiffin Calvert Senecas got a taste of the playoffs in the 2016 season, but that sampling would be bitter sweet as a first-round loss to Crestview would end their season at 7-4. Now the Senecas are hungry and ready for more. After really coming into his own last year, senior quarterback Park Hemminger is expected to return under center for the Senecas and don’t be surprised to see him feeding senior wide receiver Robbie Paul, whose name was no stranger to anyone last season. Todd Fox returns for his seventh year leading the Senecas. His leadership and instincts as a coach to recognize situations and spot opportunities, along with strategic and intelligent play calling are all key parts to the Senecas’ success. Coach Fox has the ability to connect with his athletes,

be putting it lightly; however they laid the groundwork for what figures to be an exciting 2017 campaign. Senior quarterback Todd Simonds will lead the way, as he figures to be a focal point for the offense. He has a trio of talented receivers to throw to this year, including seniors Jared Akers and Jakob Amory as well as juniors Donnell Brockington and Andrew Levans. A problem for Columbian last year was the ground game and they will look to solve that problem by going with a ground by committee solution. Simonds figures to carry most of the rushing load, with senior Jacob Char-
The Columbian Tornadoes come into the 2017 season ready to put last year in the rearview mirror. Coming off of a 2-8 campaign that saw the team struggle to find their identity on either side of the ball, the team will be shifting from the now-defunct Northern Ohio League to the new Lake Division of the Sandusky Bay Conference. Columbian will look to forge new rivalries and carry on established rivalries within the division with local schools such as Sandusky, Norwalk, Perkins, Clyde and Bellevue. The Bellevue Redmen completed their final season in the now-defunct Northern Ohio League with a 4-2 league record, good for third place. The Redmen were 7-4 overall, including a 49-34 loss to Ottawa-Glandorf in the Division IV playoffs. sophomore Donavan Magill. A factor that will surely help the Tornadoes is getting acclimated to second-year head coach Judd Lutz’s playbook and committing themselves to the offseason conditioning programs. Lutz was hired later in the off season and didn’t have much time to implement his systems prior to last season. With a full offseason to commit themselves to Lutz’s schemes and conditioning programs, the Tornadoes look to improve on their twowin 2016 campaign and get back to building the winning tradition that Tiffin Columbian fans are used to.
lton and junior Cody Craig sharing duties in the backfield. One area the Tornadoes look to be much better for the 2017 campaign is in the trenches. The offensive line looks to be much improved, with returning starters T.C. Hallett, Carl Assenheiher, Andy Schalk and Matt Sharpe adding a year of experience. The defensive line will be a feature for the team as well in the 2017 campaign, with Sharpe, Drake Devore, and Karter Reinbolt leading the way. The team has a solid linebacking corp, led by senior Adrien Elchert and

Codella must replace quarterback Gunnar Gregory, wide receiver Sterling Armstrong and lineman C.J. Hardin, all first team All-Conference last season. Centerburg will try to sweep their Knox County rivals – East Knox, Fredericktown and Danville – again in 2017.
Fredericktown Freddies Fredericktown lost four of their final five games of the 2016 season to finish 4-6. Only one of their losses was to a team with a losing record. Head coach Will Hartley hopes to turn things around this year and get back to the playoffs. earned them a trip to the postseason. The Blue Devils defeated Sciotoville Community in the first round before losing to Harvest Prep. Returning to the team this year is senior quarterback Skyler Durbin, who passed for 2,000 yards and ran for 1,000 yards last season. Also returning is senior receiver Tyler Mickley, junior kicker Reese Dorsey and junior defensive lineman Dylan Wilson. Danville has qualified for the state playoffs each year since 2011. Their only loss in the 2015 season was in the Division VII state championship game. The annual “Devil Dog Game” between Danville and East Knox is scheduled for Friday, October 27 at Danville. The Blue Devils have a 39-20-1 lead in the series and have won 16 of the last 17 games.

Sandusky Area Football Season Review/Preview By Mark Fogg, BAS Sports Network
The Sandusky Bay Conference moves into a new era this season with a three-division, eighteen-school alignment. The Lake Division will consist of four former members of the Northern Ohio League ... Bellevue, Columbian, Norwalk and Sandusky. They’ll join SBC holdovers Clyde and Perkins to make a very competitive alignment of the six larger schools in the conference. Half of this division will consist of playoff teams from last season ... Sandusky, Bellevue and Clyde. The six schools in the Bay Division will consist of Edison, Huron, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Shelby and Vermilion. Shelby is the newcomer in this division, coming over from the Northern Ohio League from last season. Edison
and Port Clinton were playoff teams last season. And finally ... the six-school makeup in the River Division will be Calvert, Lakota, Margaretta, Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic, St. Mary Central Catholic and Willard. Willard comes over from the Northern Ohio League and will replace the departed St. Wendelin. Calvert was the only team that qualified for a playoff spot out of the River Division last season. Two more small schools will joing the River Division in the 2018-19 school year as Danbury and Gibsonburg will increase the River Division to an eight-school alignment. They are both playing their final seasons in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference this season.
