Digital Beijing - The 2008 Olypmics Data Center Source: Studio Pei-Zhu

4

Precedent Study Case

"The concept for Digital Beijing was developed through reconsideration and reflection on the role of contemporary architecture in the information era. Resembling that omnipresent symbol, the bar code, the building emerges from a serene water surface. The faรงade itself is detailed to resemble an integrated circuit board. The abstracted mass of the building, reflecting the simple repetition of 0 and 1 in its alternation between void and solid, recreates on a monumental scale the microscopic underpinnings of life in the digital age to form a potent symbol of the Digital Olympics and the Digital Era. In the future, it is expected that the building will be constantly under renovation as it evolves to keep pace with technology."

"The heat generated by data centers represents a huge untapped potential in terms of energy capture that we wanted to explore further. By efficiently and sustainably exploiting excess energy that would otherwise go to waste, we can use technology to generously support health, recreation and the environment." -Kjetil TrÌdal Thorsen, Founding Partner, Snøhetta

Underground Data Centre

8

Precedent Study Case

The Future Is Underground.

The subterranean data centers aren’t just a fad. This trend is here to stay. It’s more likely that as land costs rise and leasing becomes more expensive, top executives will go for underground data centers. Fortune 500 companies and governments are already utilizing underground data centers. Currently, most such colocation facilities are in the United States and Europe. However, subterranean data centers are expected to launch all over, especially in hot climates.

The World’s Largest Sustainable Data Center Kolos, Norway

10

Precedent Study Case

The Kolos data center is “changing the paradigm in data center infrastructure,” reads the company website, by “moving away from dense high-cost, fossil fuel-driven areas,” and producing up to two gigawatts of renewable energy. Kolos also claims that the energy-efficient center will translate to lower costs for customers.

Iteration 1&2

12

Personal Journal Week 1

Firstly, arrange the basis volume according to the brief on site to see the space will be taken. The first week’s calculation of data centre space need is wrong. It should take around 20,000 m2 to fit enough racks that reaches a total 60MW requirement.

The current plan still has plenty of empty space. It could be left for future development or should be reconsidered into the whole scheme and design more engagement with the site social area(for residents), and secure area (for Next DC).

Personal Journal Week 1

15

Scheme 1 is exploring the semi-underground and above ground relations. The entrance of the site is open to public with a community swimming pool and SPA centre. The open theater at the middle of the site connects the front of house and office with a radius shape building. The level changes from underground to one level above ground. Data Centre buildings follow the radius located at the back of the site. Scheme 1

Scheme 2 has more linear arrangement with gradually level change. The precedent of the data hall building is OMA competition, which separates the functional area with distinctive shapes. The egg shape space inserted between the slabs is independent space. The frame of the building is their connection. Scheme 2

Scheme 1.1 has changed the underground cafĂŠ to a round shape with gradually level change. The centre is of the round cafĂŠ is a tall tree which creates the view also reveals the underground space when viewing from the ground level. The larger 3/4 circle is moderated to provide more space for data hall behind it. Also, connect with the front of the house. Scheme 1.1

Scheme 3 divided the site into small segments mainly consist of rectangular and circles with various combination of the two. Data hall buildings are aligned at one side of the site which could minimise the noise effect. The front of the site has community areas such as swimming pool, sports hall, cafĂŠ and shops. The education park and green house located close to the data hall to absorb waste heat.

The current scheme follows the horizontal and vertical line of alignment, which is very predictable. Some of the adjacent buildings are lack of connection. The middle of the site with a large open public space could be utilised better.

The midterm scheme mixes the site better than the previous one with inclined way of placing the buildings. The data hall buildings are developing from a rectangular shape, but all become different with its distinctive faรงade or roof structure. The connection between the front of the house and office is where the former open public space. The problem is the buildings are lack of unity, a common language that utilised al over the site.

The use of frame in the precedent cases soften the shape of a rectangular building. And frame is also working as a connection through the whole project. The idea of frame could be utilised in the data centre project since louver is a good solution for ventilation.

The view from the residential area matters since it’s the first impression when walking passes the site. The current south east corner view lacks landscape and the shape of the front of house with a flat roof does not reveal the main idea of frame. For the other corner, the pitched roof does not blend into the rest of the site.

The security of the generator may become a problem. I designed a automatic movable louver which can be lifted during the installation and will be lowered down to protect the generators during the other time. The louver will provide good ventilation to for the generators. The pitched roof has been changed to a frame piece farmer’s market. It is the closest location In the site to the residential area which provides good access to the residents.
