WELCOME Letter From The Editors The Stegela Success Mastery Team February is usually seen as the month for love. Even though Valentine’s Day is only one day out of the month. The way I see it, before we can tackle love, we need to tackle what keeps us from loving ourselves. Which is why our team picked ‘Commitment’ for the theme of this month. Love is a commitment. A commitment to ourselves and to others. Commitment is something that isn’t talked about as much in the entrepreneurial world. It’s a ‘common sense’ thing that no one really gets or puts any real stock in. When I started LBD Magazine, I didn’t know how much commitment it would take. I didn’t realize I was committing to an audience and to our writers for the unforeseen future. I have learned that, like with any business, it takes commitment every single day to keep LBD running. But not just commitment from me, it takes commitment from every single person on the LBD team. I hope that this edition helps you to recommit to yourself and to your business as the new year gets into full swing. I hope that you are given the tools you need to be on fire for your business. - Casey Nicole Fox CEO & Founder of Life By Design Magazine

You have to strengthen your commitments by committing to more things and more people and challenge yourself to stay committed. Think of conviction as a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.

“You cannot conquer what you are not committed to” -T.D. Jakes

In this article, we are going to go over three things that you MUST commit to if you want to build a better 2019! Committing is something that can seem so scary, it can leave room for pain or failure. But isn’t the real pain or failure living with the daily struggle of never reaching your goals? But that’s not you! You are ready to commit! You are ready to make 2019 your year! These three small commitments will help transform your life in ways you LBDMAGAZINE.COM 6 LIFE BY DESIGN FEBRUARY 2019

COMMIT TO YOUR VISION Vision is the driving force for any entrepreneur! This is what causes people to leave secure jobs, to be willing to go all in, and allows people to leave their comfort zone in hopes of more. But there is a difference between having a vision and committing to that vision. When you have a vision you can see where you want to go, what you want to do, and the empire that you want to build. But seeing it doesn’t mean it gets built. It’s very true that it will make it easier to build if you can see it, but there is no guarantee that you will build it just because it is easier. So you have to commit to your vision. This happens when you put action behind your vision, you set your goals and create a plan to achieving those goals. Committing to your vision is the difference between those that acquire massive success and those who remain dreamers. COMMIT TO YOURSELF This is one of the most important things you can commit to in your life. We often look at commitment as an external promise, but what about committing to yourself? When those we care about put themselves down, we often step in to lift them back up, but won’t do the same to ourselves. Now is the time to commit to yourself, to better yourself, and to build the person and the future you want to build. There are so many ways to commit to yourself, like filling yourself with knowledge and studying your craft, surrounding yourself with positive people, and replacing the “trash” in your life. This “trash” is the negative beliefs about yourself, the belief systems that have been instilled in you since you were young. Now is the time to make this commitment to yourself! Right here right now go ahead and write down what you are committing to do! This year it is time to commit to yourself, time to build the person that you want to be, and build the dreams you have been putting to the side. So take some time and decide if you are content being in the same place you are right now for the rest of your life, or if you are going to commit this year!

know we all know that success takes tons of commitments. It takes commitments that some may not even know about. Of course, we are committed to reaching hitting our numbers daily to make “X amount” of dollars, but what are the commitments outside of numbers? What blind spots are holding you back from advancing to the next level? With all the hard work you already put in, what else I challenge each and every one of must you commit to, right? us to commit to taking action every single day on activities and action My friends, in this article you are steps given by your mentor or the going to learn three new areas where person who has those proven results all of us must always stay committed that you seek. If you it? Do what you say you are going cannot commit to taking action, then to do, or don’t say it at all, right? you cannot commit to success. Commitment to your word is the same thing as having integrity. If you can’t You must commit to staying “Humble.” keep your word, then your integrity Staying humble is the most significant and the trust others have for you goes commitment out of these three. I would out the window. If you say you’re say that by committing to stay humble, going to help someone, connect them you are going to learn and grow the to resources, or whatever the case most. Rather than being a “know-itmay be, commit to your word and, all”, imagine how high your success ultimately, commit to your integrity. can reach once you become a “learnit-all”. Staying humble requires you There’s a saying that many of us live being open to learning from a mentor by; “My word is bond.” I encourage who has reached the level of success us all to always commit to keeping you are trying to reach. Learning from your word, not just to others, but a mentor who you can have direct also commit to keeping our promises contact with is crucial to your success, to ourselves as well. Do you remember what happened when they didn’t take action on your advice? Absolutely nothing.

All in all my friends, you have a choice of what you want to commit to. You can either commit to your success or to your lack of success. The choice is yours, but regardless of what you choose, you are choosing commitment.

BY DESIGN FEBRUARY 2019 2019 8 LIFE LBDMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY

Have you ever made a commitment to yourself or someone else and for whatever reason, didn’t follow through? There are numerous definitions for the word “commitment.” To me, commitment is something you’re obligated to do, and once you make the commitment, you need to follow through and deliver. It makes you accountable and trustworthy. There are differences and consequences between making a personal commitment and a professional commitment. For example, in a relationship you make commitments to be with a person, but it doesn’t mean you have to stay in the relationship forever if things don’t work out. If a personal commitment is broken, there will be some type of consequences: feelings, money, children, and etc. On the other hand, in a professional commitment, if you promise something, it is important that you don’t break the promise because your reputation may suffer and possibly jeopardize the company’s future. Commitment is a very important factor for any individual’s success. For any project to be successful, good planning is a must, and the commitments you make are what drive people to take action. Commitment involves not only vowing one’s self to a purpose but also practicing this belief system on a regular basis. Commitment helps build upon a foundation of logic that is linked with person core values and beliefs. Commitment means persistence, determination and the will to follow through with a purpose or goal in life. Having a strong grit will help you not to give up and achieve the goals you have envisioned in your life. How passionate and committed are you to making your career successful in 2019? It can be anything from raising your children, staying fit and healthy, to start the project you had in mind but never had the drive to move forward. by Glace Ziperovich www.Studio40.fit

Why I Stay

Committed “Auntie” Mary Hang

TO OUR YOUTH

EveryonesAuntieMary.com Mary Hang is a published author, influencer, keynote speaker, serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. Although she wears multiple hats, her biggest and most rewarding passion is impacting the youth through Young Entrepreneur Society & her book series “Letters To Me”, which led her to receive the “Blue Ribbons Worldwide” Award.

Hello, my friends. It’s your favorite

Auntie Mary again! If you know me, then you know how much I care for our youth. If you have ever spoken with me, then you also know that I am the Vice President of the Young Entrepreneurs Society (YES). Just in case you may not be aware, YES is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. What is YES? What happens to those students who won’t have the opportunity or don’t want to go to college? Well, this is where YES comes in. Every single week our YES staff goes into high schools at lunchtime. As a student club, we mentor the students. We bring success principles into high schools, such as personal development, mindset, budgeting, team building, all the jazz I wish someone poured into me as a teen. Regardless if they are going to college or not, I’m sure we can all agree that leadership, teamwork, integrity, decisiveness, mental toughness, and a sense of community are all principles that can benefit anyone, right? Ladies and gentlemen, let me share with you why I stay committed to sharing success principles with the youth. I grew up in an entrepreneurial family in the suburbs of Detroit. My family owned a restaurant, and my parents were gone from 10 am until 10 pm. The restaurant life was not easy, but it was however very financially rewarding. While my parents brought their dreams to life as business owners, my older brother became the caretaker of the younger siblings. After school, my older brother would

have to drive around and pick up all the younger siblings after school. On days we didn’t have to help the family business, my older brother was my babysitter until my parents got home. Most nights when my parents got home they would barely catch me as some night they got home after my bedtime. When I was 19 years old, my world changed forever. My father passed away. While my father was a great man as an entrepreneur and a man that everyone loved for his kindness and generosity, he didn’t pour any of his business knowledge into me. His dream for me was to go to college and get a good education and have a secure career. The family business was just a fall back, and he didn’t want me to be stuck in the restaurant life. So, my friends, that is why I stay committed to our youth because I want to provide what I lacked in my life. Mentorship. Many days when we talk with our YES students, I love to ask questions. I ask them all types of questions, and many times those questions lead back to the conclusion of lack of mentorship in their homes. I know how it feels too because I lived through the lack of mentorship as well. Even though times have changed, it seems like nowadays there is a more prominent lack of parental guidance in the home. My friends, I encourage all of us to stay committed to pouring into our youth. Be the voice of reason and mentorship that you wish you had growing up. While I am never blaming the parents for their lack of guidance towards success principles, remember that many parents have the traditional mindset of, “get good grades, go to college, and get a good job.” While this is done with every positive intention in mind, as entrepreneurs, we all know that the traditional route isn’t always the most appropriate route.

3 INGREDIENTS TO HELP YOU

STAY

COMMITTED As entrepreneurs, we all have what

it’s called “Shiny Object Syndrome.” I am guilty of this as well. Before I decided to become an entrepreneur, I was active duty in the Navy as a Culinary Specialist. My primary responsibilities consisted of, yup, you guessed it: cooking and cleaning. But once I finished my 8-year term with the Navy, I decided to take a different path. I went to college to study computer science. I received my Associates Degree in Computer Networking, then completed my Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Security. Once I graduated from college and started to look for jobs, due to lack of experience and lack of certifications in my industry, I couldn’t find any jobs in the IT field. At the time, I was heavily involved in a Muti-Level Marketing business, when that got boring, I moved on to the next thing than to the next after that. An entrepreneur must be able to make a clear path to achieving their goals, even when everything else seems to be standing in the way. THE 1ST KEY INGREDIENT TO ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESS IS KNOWING YOUR “WHY.” What is your “WHY” behind it? Knowing “why” allows us to make decisions in the absence of direction, provide alternatives, and make adjustments if the original instructions prove insufficient or incorrect. Some will refer to the “why” as the “guiding principle” or the “primary objective.”

Yoichi J. Kato

aka “Chef Yum Yum” www.YoichiJKato.com

BE COMMITTED! Many have tried and failed, and there are more that have tried, failed and then succeeded. You will be amongst a select group when you champion your fear and keep moving toward the greatness that you are capable of. Put on display the ecological discovery that will inspire others to desire to create their own dreams and live above “see” level.

Yoichi Kato is an author, speaker, serial entrepreneur, Navy veteran. He is the co-founder of San Diego’s most popular cleaning service called Everything But Sex Cleaning Services. He is a master business networker who is always connecting people. He is also an amazing Chef who provides private chef services all over San Diego. Yoichi loves to help others and see them thrive.

Some people are reading this, and the first thing that comes to mind is, “what is living above ‘see’ level?” Well, this is what caught my attention the first time I read it. Yet, I had a flood of meaning that accompanied the curiosity that led me back to this reading. I was enjoying a book titled, “Practical Action Tips for Go-Getters,” by a profound entrepreneur named ‘Action Jackson’, and as I read his book, I was drawn to so many great tips yet most of all, this one stood out to me. So, when I first read it, I instantly exclaimed, “This is outstanding!” It emphasizes the feeling of ascension or elevation for the entrepreneur and allows one to extrapolate deeper meanings to expand on it and contribute to showing people how to become 10 times better in all areas of their life.

distracted, and accountability is what helps us stay focused on goals and tasks at hand. Without a structure in place, nothing is holding our feet to the fire. So, what are the keys to holding yourself accountable? - Set up a goal for yourself in the next week, and then create a consequence that is more painful than it would be for you not to complete the objective. - Share your goals and plans with your peers and ask them to hold you accountable. THE 3RD AND LAST KEY INGREDIENT TO ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESS ARE HAVING AN INTENSE ACTION/BUSINESS PLAN. Action or business plans allow you to highlight the actionable steps that you need to take to achieve your tasks. It also gives a clear understanding of the time frame these measurable steps should be completed and allows you to create a detailed roadmap that leads to success.

THE 2ND KEY INGREDIENT TO ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESS IS ACCOUNTABILITY. Like I mentioned before us entrepreneurs are always

Do you still believe in your desire to accomplish great things in your life? Why? Or why not? We all have dreams when we are children, and then we adjust to different things when we grow up. If you are a child, you might want to be a Fireman or Policeman when you grow up. When “life happens” and you finish school, get your degree you find yourself working in a large room with lots of cubicles and loud noise to tell you when the day starts, when to eat your lunch and when you can go home. Was this your dream when you were a child? I don’t believe it is your dream as an adult yet, we find ourselves settling for what pushes us instead of what attracts our passion. Don’t settle when it seems life has gotten you down. If you can look up, you can get up! Let’s reach inside and imagine our success. I had many accomplishments last year,

but the one I am most proud of is writing a book. The journey I went through in completing the writing process in the short 27 hours that it took me is a mindshifting, game-changing journey that I believe everyone should go through. Here’s why. IT CHANGES YOU Authoring your own book is a process that takes you down a path that is unknown – a process that in the end shapes your character enhances your abilities and enlarges your comfort zone. You’ll discover it’s not easy to write a book and, therefore, you’ll gain a newfound perspective of other authors. It’s a great accomplishment to finish something that is hard, and you acquire a new appreciation for completing things worth doing. IT IS A PROCESS OF SELF-DISCOVERY Writing is an introspective, thoughtprovoking process that requires you to dig deep within yourself to accomplish the task. You’ll discover weird ways you express yourself, and it’ll change the way you view yourself and the outside world. It also teaches you about your commitment to your own unique willpower. IT SETS YOU UP TO BE JUDGED Showing your knowledge and skills, opening yourself up and being vulnerable, and simply just putting yourself out there sets yourself up to be criticized by others. AUTHOR tenacity to do, you not only prove to yourself (as well as others) that you have what it takes within you, you also empower yourself to live a richer and more prosperous life. FACTS TELL; STORIES SELL When you talk about the facts of what you do or the product you have, you are simply trying to sell people on your product or service. The bottom line is, everybody wants to buy, but nobody wants to be sold to. People want to connect with you, understand you, and relate to you. They want to feel like they are a part of you. Conveying your message through your stories, your life experiences, is the best way to build rapport and connect with your audience. Authoring a book is the number one way to impact the largest number of people. YOUR FINAL BOOK IS BETTER THAN YOU’VE EVER DREAMED ABOUT As an entrepreneur, I’m sure you’ve been told you need to write a book and I’m sure you’ve thought about what that book would be about. You’ve mulled over the content. You’ve probably even started the book a few times over. Once you sit down and actually pen the book, you’ll discover it is by far 100 times better than the one that’s been in your mind all this time.

Committing means dedicating your time and your efforts to something, even in those moments when you might “not feel like it,” it is staying on course until you reach your final destination, “no matter what,” “no excuses allowed.” Commitment takes effort, decision and strength, it might take time and work. However, only you will know, once you reach your desired result, that every little sacrifice, was worth it.

They can’t live a mediocre life. Plain Are you ready to give it your all? as that. They choose living over surviving. They are many times called crazy, absurd and silly. Sometimes, they are the black sheep among friends and family. And even when they feel hurt or alone, they know that inside of them there is a flame that’s more powerful than anything else. They know that the only way to feel alive is by honoring their word, keeping the promises they did to themselves, “no matter what.”

Did you know that 92% of people who set New Year’s goals give up? Well... It’s February are you still on track? Other studies have proven that most people give up on goals who don’t actually write them out. But by writing your goals out, you’re also bringing them to the forefront of your mind. I personally also make a dream board so I can see it every day. After analyzing what has worked for me and behavior of some of the most successful individuals in the world, here are 3 steps for staying committed to anything. #1 — Set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals The problem that occurs during the loss of commitment to our goals and dreams is staying focused or getting “Too Busy.” There are so many distractions in life, our families, social media, watching TV or just to be very blunt, lazy. It can’t just be done in mind and kept in the abstract. It needs to be real and written out on paper in front of you. 1) Specific: Have a specific goal in mind. 2) Measurable: Make sure you can work towards achieving that goal. 3) Attainable: The goal needs to be something you have the power to do. 4) Realistic: Ask yourself if it is really possible to achieve your goal. 5) Timely: (I believe this is the most important) Set a time limit as to when you want to achieve the goal and find a way to be held accountable to it. 6) Exciting: A goal should be exciting and boost your spirits. 7) Reach: A really good goal should make you stretch your abilities, even scare you a bit and take you out of your comfort zone. #2 — Create a Massive Action Plan It’s not just about setting SMARTER goals to stay committed to things, you also have to create a massive action plan. This includes the general steps that you’re going to take to go from Point A to Point B. Whether you want to lose weight, earn more money, start a business, or stay committed to just about any other goal, you need a massive action plan to take action! #3 — Effectively Manage Your Time The third “simple” step to staying committed to things is to manage your time effectively. One thing that I always say is that time is the greatest equalizer. No one has more time than the next person. It doesn’t matter who they are, they still only get 24 hours a day. It is how you use that 24 that will determine if you reach those goals or add it to the next year’s “hopefuls.” #neversettle by Michael Nyland michaelnyland.kyani.net

Discipline, Motivation, Mentors

S TAY I N G TRUE TO YOUR WORD

I was lucky to have entrepreneurs, inventors, engineers, and communityminded socialites in my family. Their example started me on my path to entrepreneurship. To me, the three most important factors in being an entrepreneur are: discipline, motivation, and mentors.

Jonny Gutierrez FB.com/JonnyLightning360

What

does commitment mean to you? There are different ways you can define commitment. My definition of commitment is following through with your promises. Sticking to your word and being in integrity can lead you to big SUCCESS. Why? Because no one wants to connect with someone who is just “all talk.” That person will never be successful in life. A person that is always respected keeps their word no matter what. Even if that person knows they won’t follow through with an absolute commitment, that person will announce it to the other person they made a promise to. Now you ask yourself, Why integrity? I’ll tell you why! 1. MAKING AN IMPACT: For myself, I noticed every commitment I made to someone whether it was for a relationship or even business impacts a whole lot more than just to that person. Let’s just say if I don’t follow through with my word; I automatically lose power in myself. Even worse, I lose some of my selfconfidence. Whatever you’re committed, give it all or nothing! If you go half fast in your commitment, chances are whatever that commitment that was made will end up failing. That’s just how it goes. It will impact you with a loss of trust by the other person. No one will see you as an influential person anymore. 2.WITHOUT INTEGRITY, NOTHING WORKS: This is true in so many ways. Let’s look at a bicycle wheel for example. If one of the spokes is missing on a wheel, the bicycle isn’t going to work. PERIOD. Even if the smallest thing is out of integrity, nothing will work. It’s either 100% of nothing. If you are out of integrity with another person, clean it up by acknowledging the broken agreement. Followed by the impact it made to you and that other

Life sent me through many businesses with themes: science, art, cooking, business. Each time I ran my own business, a lesson was learned. One of the best things to ever happen to a person is to be looked at as a truly reliable and responsible person. The only way to get to that level is to dominate your commitments. More significant responsibilities will come in abundance. The bigger the commitment, the bigger the pay off! That’s just how it is. There’s no way you can’t ever grow as a person if you are taking on more significant commitments and following through on each and every one of them. Growth will lead to extreme leadership. There’s no doubt about that. Don’t play small in life and build into you have the most significant commitments coming!

The most important tools you can have on the entrepreneurial highway I have found: Discipline to do all the things you need to do, especially the difficult ones. Motivation implores you to find the reason why, see the big picture, and figure the milestones you need to get there. Mentors have many benefits. Find experts in the areas you need help with and don’t be afraid to ask for more help. LES BROWN, JR.

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace and your sleep for it… if all that you dream and scheme is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it… if you gladly sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror of the opposition for it… if you simply go after that thing you want with all of your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope and confidence and stern pertinacity… if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want… if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, you will get it!” This famous speech has been passed down through generations, starting with Les Brown, handed to his youngest son Les Brown Jr. and now one generation further to Honor Brown. At Life By Design, we had the privilege of hearing Les Brown Jr. speak, as he started with this famous excerpt the room filled with energy and we began to see the inspiration handed down through generations. This Inspiration started from a very young age, as Les Brown Jr. explains growing up with Les Brown as a father is like having high standards that never go away, and for this he is very grateful. You can hear Les saying he hit the parent jackpot! While so many have asked isn’t it difficult? How did it feel growing up with such a well-known father? Or what is the hardest part? Les simply responds there is no hardest part, it wasn’t difficult, and that growing up with Les Brown as a father is what made him who he is today. While most speakers have stories where they had been through these incredible life lessons, that taught them these incredible inspirational lessons. They tell stories of how they had to unlearn years of programming that was passed on to them from, parents, teachers, peers, and life in general. This was not the case for Les Brown Jr. growing up even though he was bullied, even though he faced identity crisis like so many of entrepreneurs, he learned the steps to personal development at a young age. This meant he did not have to relearn this mindset of power and generational wealth, but instead had to simply relearn what he already learned. This is the power of generational knowledge, and Les Brown Jr. wants to show this to the world. Not only the power of generational knowledge, but also the power of generational wealth. Now Les Brown Jr. shows the importance of a one hundred year plan and how to achieve that plan faster than you ever imagined. By showing others how to create generational wealth he aims to pass on family legacies just as his father passed one on to him, and now he is passing his legacy to his son.

18 LIFE BY DESIGN FEBRUARY 2019

Growing up in excellence is something that molded Les Brown Jr. It gave him expectations, which to some can leave pressure and anxiety. But Les Brown Jr. looks at it differently. There are so many out there that have so many hardships, that live without health, without opportunity, those who live in fear, those that are repressed and told they will never be great. Les Brown Jr. asks who is he to look down upon a blessing. Without those expectations, without growing up in greatness and being stretched mentally and emotionally who would he be? This is the mindset of a champion, that each hardship, each trial is a blessing not a curse. That every challenge you face is put there to make you stronger, to help you grown and to mold you into the inspiration that will change lives. Les Brown Jr. wants you to start believing in your one hundred year plan, to start building for your future, your children’s future, your grandchildren’s future and for those generations that will be set simply because they are related to you.

power and generational wealth This is what Ms. Mamie Brown created when she decided to live her dream to be a mother despite all obstacles. She created generational knowledge, that Les Brown transformed into generational wealth, and now Les Brown Jr. will continue to pass through generations for his family, and yours. This month we are so excited to honor the Brown family, From Mamie brown to Honor Phoenix Baldwin Brown, From Mamie Brown’s Baby boy, to Mamie Brown’s Grandbaby boy! Thank you Les Brown Jr. for showing us the path to generational wealth for our February edition of Life By Design!

D O YO U HAVE WHAT I T TA KES TO B E A CO MMITTED E NT RE P RE NE UR? THE DREAM ~ As I reflect back on my childhood days, to age seven, I reflect on everything that I’ve learned about being a committed entrepreneur! Let’s take a little trip back in time and remember how I felt having my own KoolAid business at such a young age.

COMMIT TO FOLLOWING

THROUGH!

What was your New Year’s resolu-

tion? Was it to gain or lose weight? Start budgeting? Make 6 extra figures? I want you to look back to a little bit ago and recall the moment the clock struck midnight, marking a New Year; notice every single detail, do you remember what you told yourself? Remember the excitement because you thought this was “your year”? All the stuff you had planned for yourself, is GONE! You see, FOUR out of FIVE of you who are reading this didn’t COMMIT to your New Year’s resolution and failed yourself by February FIRST! I mean come on, you lasted ONE month?! Cooking has ALWAYS been my passion, I would visit my aunt’s house who was a chef and asked her to “teach me” how to make brownies, practically every night. Being a kid, I was tired of eating the same thing over and over again, so I started adding twists to improve the recipe! No matter how many times I messed up on the recipe by adding a little too much of something, I ALWAYS pushed through and tried something different, I was committed to getting my sweet fix and making the perfect brownie! This caused my passion for cooking to EXPLODE! After making different sweets and meals for over 10 years at home, I am now a cook at the best taco restaurant in San Diego called LOLA 55, which has been featured on Forbes.com, LBD Magazine, and even voted the “best casual restaurant of 2018” according to Eater Magazine! See, pursuing my passion as a future chef has been EXTREMELY difficult, I was and still am the weakest link in the kitchen. Compared to everyone else, I was too slow, my knife skills were horrible, and my presentation skills were even worse. But the executive chef kept telling me “just one percent a day,” meaning improve yourself 1% every day and in a year,

Leandro Brandao FB.com/PenthouseFoodies Leandro is a ‘Teenpreneur’ whose passion is saltwater aquariums; which have helped him through many tough times. Leandro started an aquarium cleaning service in San Diego called, Reefalicious, as well as co-founded a clothing brand for entrepreneurs called “Enspired.” Leandro pioneered the Young Entrepreneur Society (YES) Club at his school and is now a director at multiple schools. He helps fellow students like him who have the burning desire to start their own business and pursue their passions successfully. He aspires to be the person he wished he had when he was younger.

you’ll be 37 times BETTER at the start of the following year, than when you started! So I listened to the chef’s advice and pushed myself VERY hard to better myself, after every shift I would ask and still ask all 3 chefs, “What could I have done better today?” Because of my lack of skill in the kitchen, my New Years goal was to be a WAY better cook and start improving my cultural culinary knowledge. I will never be the best in the world, but I am committed to being my personal best every second of every day! Because of what I am learning from these inspiring chefs, I now cook for serial entrepreneurs all over San Diego and have a facebook foodie group, called “Penthouse Foodies” made for people just like you who want to share their meals and learn how to COMMIT to making better meals for everyone around them! I challenge you to COMMIT to your new year’s resolution like I have to mine! If yours is to “Eat Healthier,” then join my facebook group and share your recipes/meals, I would LOVE to help you COMMIT to your goals (;

BY DESIGN FEBRUARY 2019 2019 20 LIFE LBDMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY

I had a dream of cashing in and being the Kool-Aid Selling Princess. It would be so exciting earning $.5 or $.10 per cup. My customers were going to have choices on cup size, woohoo… not too long after that, I opened my first savings account. I was on my way to fulfilling my dream! I thought to myself, “Am I going to stay committed to waking up early on weekends, my only days off from the grind of school, and getting all of my supplies together, my money box along with my mixtures of flavored sweetness to my street corner?” And the only answer I had was YES! I Am All In… I will keep my entrepreneurial commitment to my dream! Remember, you can become an entrepreneur and a committed one at any age if you have the desire and a dream! Being a kid has no bearing on this choice! Take notice to so many child entrepreneurs that are crushing it, and committing to their dreams and goals. REJECTION~ When you’re a child it might be easier to commit to something because you haven’t been beaten up by all of the negativity and people turning against you in some situations or being told no over and over again. As we grow into adulthood, people are affected by all kinds of ups and downs and rejection that have taken them away from their commitment. The roller coaster ride has begun of being an entrepreneur that will challenge our commitment, sometimes several times on a daily basis! Often times people don’t commit or have a massive fear of commitment altogether, because of that thing they call Rejection… Some might think if they don’t commit, they will be happier and free, until their dream starts coming around again banging inside their head, wanting them to make a commitment to it…. People will forget what you did! People will forget what you said! But, people will never forget how you made them feel… This goes for negative self talk too! Start each day positive, telling those negative inner thoughts keeping us from our commitment, to hush then replace with positive affirmations, you’ll have a better chance that your commitment will stay strong! COMMITMENT~ This word is a noun, meaning ‘the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause or activity.’ Commitment leads to action, and action brings your dream closer! So wouldn’t you agree, there is no great entrepreneurial success without Great Commitment. Take this final thought with you, commitment is the cornerstone of creative change of being a committed entrepreneur… by Sheri Hendrickson SheriHendrickson.com

KEVIN STIMPSON

This month Life By Design is proud to feature Kevin Stimpson! As an en-

trepreneur, Kevin has built a successful premium branding company Strive and Grind and so much more! Kevin grew up in Virginia Beach Virginia and had the dream of going to the NBA. Growing up neither of Kevin’s parents were entrepreneurial so he was taught to get good grades, get a good job and be able to take care of himself and his family. As he went to college he decided to double major one with his parents dream for him, information systems and technology, and one in business management. Double majoring like this allowed Kevin to stack his resume so he would be able to come out of college and hopefully get a high paying job right away. After college, Kevin moved into IT, and Corporate America, but as soon as he got out of college he started to listen to podcasts. As he started working in Corporate America he started noticing these trends, everyone was addicted to the weekend, unhealthy, stuck in their cubicles, and Kevin didn’t want that to be him. Instantly he started looking for different ways to make money. This led Kevin to listening to podcasts and reading books, and he figured out that it wouldn’t take six figures of capital to start his own business. Once he realized that most of the entrepreneurs he looked up to at the time lived in San Diego, he leveraged his company moved to San Diego, attended his first ever entrepreneurship conference, found a business coach on the spot, and built a six-figure business. All within one year of moving to San Diego, this allowed Kevin to quit his day job and build something for himself. Building Strive and Grind is about more than just having a successful brand company, building Strive and Grind is about creating a lifestyle brand, creating financial and time freedom for himself and his family, and building epic experiences to motivate and inspire himself and others. Kevin is such a value-driven entrepreneur when we asked him for one piece of advice, he decided to give you his three most helpful pieces of advice! The first thing you need to make sure is your mindset is correct, building the correct mindset means listening to podcasts reading books, and surrounding yourself with people that lift you up. For Kevin this was built around his hunger for more and is what lead him to finding success as an entrepreneur. Change up your environment! Even if you can not physically move at this time you can change your mental environment. Change the people you are around, the content you are absorbing, and the belief systems you are stuck in. The last thing Kevin wants you to know is to learn a skill set that people will pay for. When you combine all three of these pieces of advice you are bound to succeed! While I fully anticipate committing to one man for my lifetime, and have one family, professional commitments have become more fluid with time. Instead of the pensions of our forefathers, we are mostly left to fend for ourselves saving for retirement as few of us will be able to count on company pensions and social security as more than a meal a month in retirement. So, when your original dream doesn’t work out quite the way you expected, how do you choose the next dream and make the commitment to see it through? Most of us can tell you what NOT to do. Don’t buy every bright, shiny object in your path, thinking you’ll get rich quick and never have to work again. Find a way to settle yourself into some piece of calm and think. Perhaps you’ll ask yourself these questions: How do I want to live? How do I want my days to look? Who do I want to be? What do I want my children to see, based on my actions and not my words, is truly important to me? Figure those things out, and you’ll be able to answer the question: What do I really want to do? As you go through this process, you’ll find you make a more profound commitment to the dream.

Say you want to be a travel writer. You pay for the courses, maybe even get started, then life gets in the way. You put it aside, you’re a little committed, but not all in, and know that it’s there for you if you want to get back to it, someday. That day may not come for a few years when you realize you’re not burnt out from your day job as you hear from so many of your colleagues, but you really are beaten down. The travel writing courses will cross your plate just as another opportunity serendipitously comes your way. For us, it was my daughter’s gap year between college and grad school. The commitment to travel writing came from the enjoyment of both travel and writing. The commitment to do it now came from traveling across multiple (new) continents and countries, experiencing the highs of the Auckland Sky Tower to the lows of the reefs of Bonaire, Dutch Antilles (deeper than the Great Barrier Reef). Being able to make a living as a travel writer takes the commitment to productivity. As American businessman Paul J. Meyer said, “Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” Here’s to you: Choose wisely the thing worthy of your commitment. Don’t be afraid to abandon a spiritsucking job for something worthy of your talents, time and life.

We got to talking about his routine, and he shared a simple philosophy that has helped his physical health. “You get toned in the gym, you control your weight in the kitchen.” Chris had been exercising regularly, with some modest results. He didn’t see a true transformation until he took control of his diet. The modest results he had first seen in the gym were compounded by his healthy eating habits in the kitchen. While doing one without the other is still a positive step in the right direction, it won’t take you to the next level. If you only eat well and don’t exercise, you may be thin, but you’ll likely be weak. If you only exercise and eat poorly, you may be able to lift more weights, but you’re probably looking at negative health effects. If you only keep up with these actions short-term, your positive results will quickly fade. There is nothing Chris is doing that the average person can’t do. It is a simple, yet effective philosophy. There are no special supplements and no expensive meal plans, just three steps that when combined make an enormous impact: Eat well Exercise Repeat As I thought about his philosophy on physical well being, I realized there is a parallel to achieve financial well

being. I boil it down to this: “You increase your money by investing, you control your future with cash flow.” The similarities are striking. Individually taken, these fundamental actions likely won’t allow you to reach your highest financial goals. If you only invest and don’t have control over your cash flow, what will you do if the economy struggles? You’ll likely have to sell your investments at the worst of times. If you only focus on your cash flow and don’t invest, what will happen to your savings? Inflation will destroy the value of the cash lying idle in your bank account. If you only keep up with these actions short-term, your positive results will quickly diminish. We see three steps to financial success materialize: Control your cash flow Invest the excess Repeat This is where a solid financial plan becomes so powerful. The right plan will ensure your cash flow is purposeful. The money will flow into the most appropriate accounts, optimized for goals, taxes, fees, and returns. Investing your excess cash flow will compound your returns in the markets, taking you to a new level of wealth. If you feel like your finances are stuck in “dad bod” shape, we’d love to get you feeling financially fit. At Driven, we are dedicated to making this process approachable and understandable. Tired of trying to be healthy but you are eating food that tastes like cardboard? Of course you are!!!

KEYS TO Gerald Eldred “Coach G”

SUCCESS

StegelaSuccess.com At the age of 8, I was labeled dumb and diagnosed with a learning disability. I have literally spent my whole life making my label the inspiration behind finding purpose in my life, exercising my strength in business and fostering my love for connecting with others in my relationships as the key to the realization that I am smart. It’s about breaking down labels to bring out your own “Genius Within”.

3 OF COACH G’s KEYS TO SUCCESS 1. Attitude of Gratitude 2. Dream and Goals 3. Reading

I have committed to using the 3 Keys Attitude of Gratitude, Reading and Settings Goals for 20 years and they have changed my life, and they will do the same for you.

KEY 1: GRATITUDE – The quality of being thankful: Readiness to show appreciation for and to return the kindness. Do you want more happiness? Better health? Deeper relationships? You need to have an Attitude of Gratitude. Benefits of Gratitude 1. Gratitude boost our career - Makes you a more effective leader, helps you network, increases your decisionmaking capabilities, increases your productivity and enables you to get mentors and proteges. 2. Gratitude makes us happier - Five minute a day of Gratitude can increase your long-term well-being by more the 10%. 3. KEY 2: DREAMS AND GOALS – Do you have dreams and goals? Are they written down? If your dreams and goals aren’t written down and action is taken to achieve them, then they’re just dreams, and you might as well go back to bed. “A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action can make your wildest dreams come true”. Decide what your dreams and goals are, commit to them, take action because great lives are born on great dreams. So, remember to dream big!!

KEY 3: READ If you read one book per month, that will put you into the top 1% of income earners, but if you read a book a week 50 a year, this will make you one of the best educated, smartest, most capable and highest paid people in your field. I had a goal to read one book a month last year after hearing that statement when the year ended, I ended up reading 42 books, and this was from someone who was diagnosed with a learning disability and hated reading. So, if I can do it anyone can. Bill Gates, Oprah, Warren Buffett are just a few of the most successful and wealthiest people in the world, and they read every day. If you want to be successful, then you should follow what successful people do! LEADERS ARE READERS. BEWARE OF SUCCESS When a warning light comes on in your dashboard, that’s a sign that something could be wrong with your car. In business, we don’t have anything similar other than seeing profits dropping and expenses rising. While most people look for troubling signs like declining sales or net profits, another warning signal can be success.

A YEAR OF COMMITMENT

Everyone wants success, but the moment you become successful, that’s also a time not to get complacent. Sometimes success can be the beginning of the end. Just ask Kodak, Blockbuster Video, and Borders Books what happened after they became successful.

James Adalberto Nelson ChainBreakerSpeaker.com

We’ve

all heard it before. “New year, new me!” The local gym is filled to capacity for the first 2 months. Your coworker is on the next crazy diet fad, and your friend says, like he says each year, “this time it will be different.” But what happens just a few more months into the year? The gym empties out, and now you don’t have to wait 2 hours for a piece of equipment to become available, you catch your coworker in the break room devouring some Godknows-how-old cake from some past birthday and your friend is back to his old ways.

James Adalberto Nelson is a Marine Veteran and known as the Chain Breaker Speaker. After joining a mastermind with no business, no business idea and no vision for himself he finally was able to break that chains that held him back and define his life and purpose. Now he wants to help others break their chains so that can live the life they are meant to live as the person they are meant to become.

2.Put meaning behind the resolutions: Why do you want to lose weight? Is it for getting back into fighting shape? Is it to feel more confident?

As much as we like to believe that we’re 100% responsible for our success, there are often elements outside our control. Right before the 2008 real estate crash, it was easy to be a successful real estate agent because everyone could easily get loans. Once the housing crash began, loans dried up and suddenly being a real estate agent became much harder. So be honest with yourself and look for what external circumstances are helping fuel your success. Once you identify these external forces out of your control, you can plan for when (not if) those external forces change. Then you can become less dependent on outside forces and more in control of your own destiny. Success Blinds Us From New Opportunities When you’re successful, it’s easy to believe you’re doing everything right, and that may be true. But remember, life always changes. Successful businesses tend to keep doing what made them successful, and then they overlook new opportunities until it’s too late.

Is it for health reasons? Why do you want to make more money? Is it for a family vacation? Is it to help get out of debt? Is it to treat your parents to something spectacular? Meaning behind your resolutions will keep you committed when you start to reach for that cookie or cake, you can say “no this is for a healthier me,” or when you want to buy something that’s out of your budget you can say “no this is not going to get my parents what they deserve.”

Commitment is something we all struggle with. We all want the new year to be filled with new goals and to be better than the previous year. But why do so many of our resolutions fail? According to U.S News, 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. For you to get your 2019 off to a great start and to maintain the momentum here are three easy steps: 3.Be specific. How much weight? How much 1.Write your resolutions down on money? By when? Be as specific paper and keep them where you can as you can be. This will keep you committed to staying the course. You see them often: Don’t just say it! Be about it! Writing will be able to track your progress or down your resolutions gives them even lack of progress which will help power and adds more meaning to you get back on track. them. Also by having them in a place where they are constantly being seen will help keep you committed if you start to forget what you were working towards.

What’s Really Responsible for Your Success?

We have wanted to make each year better than the last. We all have areas that we want to improve in. These three easy steps will help you stay committed to that “new year, new me” resolutions!

First, try to imagine what could put you out of business. Then shift your business to that new opportunity to put yourself out of business before someone else does it for you. Apple once made millions selling iPods. When smartphones started offering digital music playing features, Apple killed the iPod by coming out with the iPhone. Apple killed their own product because other companies were going to do that anyway. The lesson is don’t be afraid to kill your own business because if you don’t, someone else will, and if someone else does it, then you’ll be out of business. When the Internet first began, Borders Books opened a website and directed potential book buyers to Amazon’s site because Borders didn’t want to bother selling books online and didn’t think online bookselling would be profitable. Think Borders made a wise decision? Summary Everyone wants success, but success is never an end but a milestone. The moment you’re successful, don’t stop. Stay hungry. Look for new opportunities and identify forces outside your control that could change. Success is a process, not a destination. As long as you keep this principle in mind, you’ll be well on your way to success in your business, whatever it may be. by Wallace Wang 15minutemoviemethod.com

Thought Leaders Zone Are you ready for commitment? How clear is your vision? Do you want to make this your most successful year yet? Does it benefit others? Would it be unreasonable to ask you to make four commitments? Are you committed and unwavering in your belief? It’s been my experience that having an unreasonable approach can be the most effective way to establish your leadership (and the depth of your message).”

The very first difference I noticed shifting from being an employee to an entrepreneur was my commitment. Don’t get me wrong I was always a dedicated employee, but would not have worked every day for a year straight, wouldn’t have worked for free, would not have served as the CEO and the janitor, nor would I have made personal sacrifices to make sure the business survives. But for my own business, yes I would have and I did. I soon realized that being an entrepreneur was like the commitment of marriage. I was committed to my business for better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part. Aahh, what we do for love. The single most vital characteristic of an entrepreneur is their level of commitment. Motivation, positivity, drive are all important, but they are simply garnish if you do not have the commitment to stick to your plan when things go to hell, and you’re drowning in a pool of insecurity and bills. That is why if you want successful business longevity, you need to understand the difference of being committed to succeeding and being committed to surviving. Small Biz Trends recently reported that 90% of all start-ups fail and we already know that almost half of all marriages end in divorce. I promise you that each was dedicated to succeed and zero were committed to surviving. Actors are a great example. I have met plenty of actors who spend years doing small roles and working as Uber drivers or waiters before they find success. While many people are impressed by the entrepreneur who is committed to doing whatever it takes to succeed, I want the entrepreneur who will do what it takes to survive. Daymond John from Shark Tank and the founder of FUBU waited tables at Red Lobster while building his brand. John Paul DeJoria (the founder of Paul Mitchell) said: “Every week, for almost two years, we should’ve gone out of business.” But he didn’t. Instead, he sold hair products from his trunk, printed their bottle labels in black and white because they were only two cents to print versus the pricey colored ones, and often went to Happy Hours for the complimentary hors-d’oeuvres, his only meal of the day. They were committed to surviving while working to succeed. So whether it’s your first or fifth year as an entrepreneur, ask yourself if you would eat Top Ramen for a year, downsize to a studio apartment, or drive for Uber in between your clients if that’s what it took. Know what your survival boundary line is and make it part of your in house business plan. You are going to have a lot of successes and failures, but it is the survivors who make it through both. Above all else, remember there is a reason Gloria Gaynor’s hit song from the ’70s was titled, “I Will Survive” not “I Will Succeed.” by Jody Taylor Sixty5Media.com

Step by Step The beautiful Greek Island of Santorini in the Aegean sea was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century thus forever shaping its rugged landscape. Santorini has two towns Oia and Fira which cling to cliffs above an underwater crater. It was here that I learned a precious lesson about commitment. There are two ways to get to the towns; one way is to ride up the cliff in a cable car, and the other is to ride a Donkey up the arduous stairs — 587 steps. Before my friends and I made our decision, a gift shop caught our eye. As I paid for my souvenirs, I realized that my bank card didn’t work. I forgot to inform the bank that I would be out of the country and I would not be able to access my money until the next day. I hung up the phone and looked around for my friends, but they had disappeared. After tirelessly searching I concluded that they must have taken one of the two ways up. Quickly I thought up a third way up the cliff; the climb. I would attempt the accent by foot with no cash, no water and a fear of heights. I felt fit, confident and committed. Before long I was halfway up, I began sweating, breathing heavy and I was thirsty! I had to pause to catch my breath. I took a moment to look out over the cliff, down at the vast, beautiful deep blue sea and as I stood there in amazement, I realized my great accomplishment of stepping through my fear of heights. I made it 587 steps! I looked around and saw incredible white buildings with blue roofs. The smell of fresh seafood permeated the air, Five-star hotels, wineries, and more waited for me. For a split second, I thought about going straight back down the 587 steps because I was afraid that I might my not find my friends. “You will always have choices: your commitment versus your fear.” -Sammy Davis Jr. However, if I allow my fear to choose for me than I would have missed the opportunity to experience something new, I decided to enjoy where my commitment took me, and after a few hours in paradise, I had to begin my descent. Sunsets in Santorini are known for being some of the most beautiful in the world! And I felt so extremely blessed to have been able to witness one. Soon I was back on our cruise ship and ran right into my friends. I told them I walked up to Fira to find them. They told me that they never made it up and had just stayed in the gift shops. I was committed to finding my friends, and with a single step, I was open to going on a journey not knowing where it would take me but having faith and the commitment that I would reach my destination in the end. by Nadirah R.Bray goddessinmotioninstitute.com

It’s funny how once you commit to something, you don’t seem to realize how difficult it can be to achieve it until the passion and motivation begin to decline. I’ve tried to quit more times than I can remember. I begin to think how easy it would be to just go back to working a full-time job with benefits and nights and weekends free. Influence - such a simple everyday word that is used. After watching this movie though, this word took me to a whole other level of understanding! As entrepreneurs, we are encouraged to really deeply know our customers to move them to buy our products or services. Some have taken advanced courses and training in unraveling the techniques to move people to buy their product. This experimental documentary shows radically how our subconscious mind and how the power of social pressure can maneuver people to make decisions. I appreciated that the host explained the human reasoning behind the actions that were given to the participants. What made this movie very interesting and unique is that it’s “raw & real” reactions! The documentary was so engaging from start to finish. A must see for sure!!! “Great power comes with great responsibility” - may we always seek and find the benefits of our customers because our reward will come after. “The Power of Freewill” - may we stand firm in our truth, values, and beliefs to make the next best choice. by Jennifer Meim JenniferMeim.com

But this event featured a special guest that we know will be around much more often! That’s right we had your cover Les Brown Jr. speaking on stage just feet away from our amazing tribe! WHAT IS Y.E.S.?

OUR VISION: Our vision is to have Y.E.S. in every high school across the United States. Meet The Team Of YES Meet the team dedicated to providing mentorship and personal development in the lives of high school students: Jeff Rollon | President | JeffRollon.com a serial entrepreneur, author, business coach, and philanthropist. He enjoys helping others while living with a positive attitude and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Jeff is a part of YES because when he looks back he realizes he was always an entrepreneur, but didn’t have the guidance to turn that mindset into a more positive direction, which is why he is now that person for others.

Mary Hang | Vice President | EveryonesAuntieMary.com a published author, influencer, keynote speaker, serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. Although she wears multiple hats, her biggest and most rewarding passion is impacting the youth through Young Entrepreneur Society & her book series "Letters To Me", which led her to receive the "Blue Ribbons Worldwide" Award.

YES stand for Young Entrepreneur Society. We are a California Nonprofit 501 (c)(3) that serves high schools on a weekly basis. Every week our team of volunteers hosts school clubs during their lunch break to bring them FREE lunch & activities, and videos around the spirit of entrepreneurship (leadership, team building, critical thinking, communication, sense of community, mindset and personal development, etc). WHY Y.E.S.? Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in teens between 13 and 18. Depression and anxiety are the number 1 and 2 mental illnesses suffered among students in high school. 1 out of 6 teens have seriously considered suicide. 1 out of 12 have attempted suicide. 78% of students have started drinking alcohol. 42.5% of students have used drugs. Of that, 25% have used hard drugs such as cocaine, LSD, and Ecstasy. 50% of students have been bullied online. Every 26 seconds a student drops out of high school.

Dominic Cruz | Director | CruzinSocialMedia.com the founder/CEO of CruzIN Social Media and a former professional hip-hop dancer. He has a strong passion for helping business owners just like you grow revenue via social media. He was raised in the city of Boston, MA and born in New Orleans, LA.

We believe this is due to lack of purpose and lack of vision. Our team comes in every week to bring the spirit of entrepreneurship to give hope and vision for their future.
