Editor’s Letter

T

here is nothing quite like a great conversation with passionate, smart people – even if it has to happen on the phone in the middle of their glamorous lives, while I sit amongst the flotsam and jetsam that accumulates on my desk, from books stacked up to review to magazine pages to proof.

In this High Summer edition of Coast Lifestyle, I had the pleasure of speaking at length with two amazing Gold Coasters who are working in the entertainment business on a global scale. On page 20, read how our first ever cover guy, David Whitehill, Face of Qantas, television host and former Sea World dolphin trainer, nearly ended up being my friendly, neighbourhood accountant. Not that there’s anything wrong with accountants – some of my best friends are bean counters and I admire them for their creative skills – but take one look at this guy and you know without a shadow of a doubt that the camera loves him. Now, as you will read, David is combining his media savvy with his love of the sea for a very special project that he hopes will one day be his legacy.

Then I had a long chat with Tabatha Coffey, whom many of you will know as the star of the reality TV series Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, while she sat in an LA car park in between filming season three of her hit show. What an amazing woman, who has made hair dressers her tribe and fixing tanking salons her mission in life. See page 48 for Tabatha’s profile. Keeping with the entertainment theme, not only do we introduce the new cast of Lightning Point, a kids program from Jonathon M. Shiff Productions now filming on the Coast (see page 76), but our What’s On round-up on page 18 features several amazing shows and events that you won’t want to miss. There’s something for everyone, from Disney to the national rodeo championships at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

New CDs & A Virtual Choir Summer is all about rest and relaxation, and new music goes hand in hand with hanging out on the beach, taking it easy at home and getting inspired for the New Year. Coming Back to You Casey Barnes

Join the World Virtual Choir Eric Whitacre, a young Grammy nominated composer and conductor, has launched a global search for singers of all levels to join a record-breaking attempt to create the world’s largest online choir.

but also what collaboration can really mean.

If you love to sing, what could be more fun than recording and uploading your own personal YouTube video and joining the thousands around the world to help smash the existing record, which currently stands at 900 singers. It’s also one of those weird, fun opportunities that are engineered in these new media times to grab global attention and push the boundaries of not only what we think a choir should be,

This is Eric’s second year at the attempt, and if YouTube hits of the video of his first attempt – one million hits in just 60 days – are anything to go by there is every chance you will be able to say you were a part of history! Entries to the Virtual Tour record attempt are via YouTube and include a tutorial explaining how to record and upload your chosen part in the choir. Closing date for entries is December 31, 2010. Visit www. youtube.com/EricWhitacresVrtlChr and represent the Coast! Let us know if you take part, write to editor@lifegc.com.au.

Australian Idol top 12 finalist Casey Barnes has just released his second single Coming Back To You, fresh after appearing on the most recent series of the Channel Ten program. Prior to his appearance as a finalist on Australian Idol, Casey had already made quite a mark on the Australian music industry having independently released two solo albums and played alongside the likes of Bryan Adams, Vanessa Amorosi and Eskimo Joe. Casey has also had huge success with his recent collaboration with DJ/Producer Marco Demark with their remake of the Elton John classic Tiny Dancer. www.caseybarnes.com.au

Strip Club Etiquette Red Bantoo Hydrofunk Records Everything about Strip Club Etiquette, the new CD from Red Bantoo is so polished that it’s hard to believe that the group formed in just 2009. The tracks are a fusion of soul, jazz and hip hop that swirl through live instrumentation and electronic production, with killer vocals. It might bend your mind to know this slick sound comes out of the Byron Bay hinterland. Slick, yes, but as the basis to this sound is ‘cool, baby, cool’ it’s exactly what you want playing when you next have a big do at your place. Somehow its all about Summer, and I guess it takes our cousins just south of the border in chilled out locales like Byron Bay, to know how to help Gold Coasters relax. For a sampler track, listen to Move On, Be Strong.

Aussies Luv O Could Australians take home a record number of Oscars this year?

I

f the Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation, the Academy Awards – aka The Oscars – is the awards ceremony that stops the world, with billions across the globe tuning in to the red carpet coverage and the actual telecast. First held in 1929, Australians have a rich history with the Academy Awards, with an Australian actress, May Robson, nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Lady for a Day in 1933. For the 83rd annual Academy Awards, to be held on February 27, 2011 there are several potential Australian contenders for nominations and awards so we’ve prepared a handy, fun form guide for you to fill out and enter into our amazing Madman Entertainment competition!

Of course, the big Aussie Oscar buzz this year is about Animal Kingdom, the debut film from David Michod, who may be nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Veteran actress Jackie Weaver’s performance has wowed audiences at film festivals and showings around the world, and what a dream it would be if she holds that famous gold statuette on Oscar night for Best Supporting Actress. Just tick who you think will be nominated and/or win and post it in by Friday, 21 January (before nominations are announced on the 25th). The form guide that comes the closest to the actual number of Australian nominations and actual wins will take home the Madman LOOT!

Sea the Good

Coast Man

life as he had known it – predictable, easy, the same small circle of the same kind of people. “Even though it’s a small community, Byron is a magnet for people from around the world, from all kinds of backgrounds. I was also surfing every day and discovering this deep connection to the sea and nature in general. Surfing is definitely a spiritual experience for me. Its different every day and you see so much – the sunrises, the sunsets, the sea life. It became incredibly meaningful to me.”

David Whitehill – Sea World dolphin trainer, Cleo Bachelor of the Year, television host and Face of Qantas, gears up for the gig of a lifetime

O

Words: Alicia Mayer Beverley ne look at David Whitehill and he seems made for the camera. The symmetrical face, square masculine jaw, sandy blond hair, blue eyes and perfectly toned body have combined to create a sort of representative male. If we had to send a picture of ‘Man’ into outerspace, he could easily serve as the man icon. So it came as no surprise to me that he is also the consummate media professional – easy to work with, always hitting the photographer’s mark, thinking about what our readers want out of this profile, and making everyone’s job super easy. I remember watching David being photographed for this story at the Marriott and thinking, “this is the easiest photo shoot – ever”. If everyone I dealt with was as savvy and accommodating as David, I would, in all conscience, have to ask for a pay cut. Thankfully not everyone is. What is surprising is how close he came to missing out on everything he seems

perfectly suited for – dolphin training at Sea World, Cleo Bachelor of the Year, television host, Face of Qantas – and becoming a suburban accountant instead. David, ever the good guy, went on from Brisbane Boys Grammar to QUT where he attained a Bachelor in Business and Accounting, ostensibly to follow in his dad’s footsteps and join his accountancy firm. Says David, “I’m not even sure how I managed to finish uni because I was miserable and hated every minute of it, but I didn’t have the strength or maturity at the time to face my parents and tell them it wasn’t for me.”

But it didn’t take long to work out that Byron Bay wasn’t right either so David moved up to the Gold Coast, and it was here that suddenly everything began to make sense and opportunities arose that are a direct path to where he is now. “I began volunteering at Sea World, and within two weeks a traineeship came up that meant I would be learning how to train dolphins for a year. It was an unbelievable stroke of good luck and I grabbed it.” “I loved going to work every day. The dolphins were so fun – just like the people I worked with, they had their own friends, their own personalities, the dolphins they didn’t like. It was a whole new world, and I felt this tremendous sense of gratefulness that I could have this experience, that working every day with dolphins was my job and I was paid to do it!” David’s ambitions met serendipity in 2002 when Cleo Magazine approached Sea World’s marketing team to see if they had any super hunks to put forward as that year’s competition would have a water theme.

He kept his true feelings under wraps for a further 12 months after finishing his degree and worked with his dad in the practice. Finally, he faced the music and told his parents he was moving down to Byron Bay. His mother was devastated and convinced he was dropping out to become a hippie, but his father was surprisingly supportive. He knew he was disappointed, but his father never showed it. David’s move down south was the break he needed, not only from the family’s expectations of their oldest son, but from

Coast Lifestyle | 21

Coast Man

N

ext thing David knows, he has won Cleo’s Bachelor of the Year and his life explodes with media appearances, parties, girls everywhere and as he puts it, perks money just can’t buy.

“That was a crazy year and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it! I travelled around the country and discovered the media, and most importantly, that I was good at it.”

In no time, other opportunities flowed. He joined three other presenters for a kids program called Hot Source, but couldn’t leave Sea World behind. He worked seven days a week. Three days dolphin training, three days with Hot Source and a day in Sydney on another TV show called So Fresh. Then in 2007 he spent six months filming in dozens of countries for Escape, a travel series shown on Qantas and Jetstar flights. Over two years, on countless flights, David probably had more daily viewing hours than any other Australian media personality. The following year he became Sea World’s front man and made several television commercials, was featured on promotional material and made several videos. Everyone was happy to see him back in the fold, including the dolphins. Unbeknownst to David though, greater forces were conspiring for the role of a lifetime – as the Face of Qantas. “I was asked to cover the Rugby World Cup in South Africa for Qantas, and found that larger discussions were actually occurring between them and my agent in Melbourne. By the time I arrived home, there was a contract.”

Though the relationship and scope of what it means to be the Face of Qantas is still growing, the gig offers David huge national and international exposure. Just days before our interview, David and his partner of the last two years, Christie Lee Sharpe, were down in Sydney to help celebrate Qantas’ 90th anniversary with an A-list of celebrities, including of course, that other Qantas ambassador, John Travolta, and his wife Kelly Preston. What is even more amazing is that this is not a story about a handsome guy who got the big breaks thanks to a crazed agent ala Entourage, pulling every trick in the book and snaring the deals. In reality, David has chased, from his reckoning “95% of the opportunities” that have come his way. Now, at 35 and confident that he has a relatively reliable career in the media, he can focus on the big picture: a legacy that he hopes will help motivate Australians to help keep our sea animals from extinction. Called Our Blue Backyard, David and Christie hope to create a TV series that highlights our ‘blue heroes’, those Australians who devote their lives to keeping endangered sea life alive and creating the conditions for them to thrive. “I think Australians, with the right information, and understanding what’s at stake, will do what they can to help. No one wants to look back and say, ‘if only…’ when we can act. But at the same time too, no one wants to be preached at,” says David. “So my aim is to do what we did with training dolphins, keep it simple. Reward good behaviour. There are a lot of people doing great things, and we can encourage them and others by highlighting the good they do.” As they say in the media biz when something big is coming, ‘Watch this space’.

“So my aim is to do what we did with training dolphins, keep it simple. Reward good behaviour. There are a lot of people doing great things, and we can encourage them and others by highlighting the good they do.

The 2000’s -

The Trendless Decade! Words: Pam Tamblyn - founder of Tamblyn Models

E

ach decade seems to bring with it a distinct and somewhat defining memorable fashion style. How often do we say ‘Remember the 50’s, 70’s, 80’s’? And somehow most people will know exactly what we mean fasion-wise.

But what will people recall about the 2000’s? Of course, fashion continues to be re-invented and given a modern twist, but this last decade we have seen just about everything, but strangely enough, nothing new. From 2000 – 2010, we really saw a melting pot of several decades with influences that included gogo boots and Mary Quant style mini skirts (that somehow went even shorter this time around), shoulder pads straight out of the 80’s (perhaps we needed the power-play dressing to recover from the GFC?), high-waisted pants and shorts originally from the 40’s, but also revisited in the 60’s and 70’s, and hippy maxis, platform shoes and the clutch bag from the 70’s and 80’s. Of course, we have also seen the straight out revival of ‘vintage’ shopping, but even this is not quite what it used to mean because with the proliferation of new boutiques, websites, Facebook fan pages and serious trawling of Op shops, the term now appears to include anything that’s not new! So what can we expect for 2011? Well…history has shown that wars and troubled times are often reflected in our fashions. From the rough economy, it’s no surprise that colours for Autumn/Winter 2011 are a bit muted. We will see that beige isn’t boring, especially when combined with stunning earthy and forest shades. But for now, we still have the luxury of a couple of warm months ahead, trotting out our bikinis whenever we can. We can all salute Gold Coaster Paula Stafford who introduced the bikini to us in the 60’s. It’s a wonder men haven’t created shrines to Paula to thank her for single-handedly revolutionising what women wear (or don’t wear) to the beach. Face of Coast Model Search Our Face of Coast Competition will soon be under way, so look forward to seeing this year’s contestants as they are chosen, and culminating at the end of 2011 with another amazing gala event to reveal another star, like the gorgeous Tess Alexander. I have just gotten word that she has been given a three month contract in Japan! Perhaps we’ll be seeing you on these pages? Tabatha Coffey On a personal note, I hope you enjoy reading our interview with reality TV star, Tabatha Coffey of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover. Tabatha and her mother Norma, have been great friends of mine for many years, and sadly Norma passed away recently. She will be deeply missed. Along with Tab, Norma also had a great passion for fashion and she lived life with tremendous style… ‘Til next issue, remember to Step out in Style! 34 | Coast Lifestyle

all them what you will – performers, dancers, entertainers, artistes… But the best known burlesque star in the world, Dita Von Teese, she of the raven hair, ruby lips and curvaceous corseted figure, got to the heart of the matter when she called herself a ‘stripper’.

The Look:

now seen on the arms of the rich and famous, sashaying down red carpets at A-list events across Paris, Los Angeles, New York and London. Born Heather Renée Sweet on September 28, 1972 in Rochester, Michigan to a manicurist and a machinist, Von Teese’s own rise to world-wide fame mirrors that of the revival of burlesque. Von Teese now has her own line of Wonderbras, Perrier, Cointreau, stockings and several books.

No doubt, Dita Von Teese has to be the classiest stripper ever and her glamorous screen siren look has influenced fashion, hair and make-up trends and perhaps even inspired the new film, Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, and released in Australia in early 2011.

Along with the movie, Burlesque and countless shows popping up everywhere, there are now travelling burlesque troupes and competitions.

Briefly married to the controversial singer Marilyn Manson, Von Teese is

Here is how you can get some burlesque into your life!

The look is firmly the glam 1940’s pin-up girl with defined, arched eyebrows, dramatic eyeliner, rosy cheeks, ruby red lips or sweet cherry, and of course, a sexy, come-hither beauty spot! Hairstyles come straight from the screen sirens of Hollywood’s Golden Age – think Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo, then throw in some Marilyn Monroe, and you’ve got it nailed!

Burly of Burlesque

Take one measurement of sashay, mix it with tease and add a dash of grind, and you’ve got a burlesque strip tease that will have your man tucking $100 notes into your corset!

The Moves: THE TEASE. Start slow, keep eye contact and make him wonder what’s under that silk robe. THE FLIRT. Cheeky is the word! OH NO! That expression that says, ‘Did I just reveal my…?’ No, not possible! THE ACCIDENTAL FLASH. Accidentally flash a little bit of thigh, shoulder or décolletage – then follow with the ‘Oh No!’ INTENTIONAL REVEAL. Sexy and bold, but there’s no rush... THE WINK. Says, ‘there’s more and you know it’. Classic come hither…

The Movie: Burlesque – It Takes a Legend to Make a Star Starring Cher, Stanley Tucci, Christina Aguilerra, Kristen Bell. From writer/director, Steven Antin – a small-town girl ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a neo-burlesque club run by a former dancer. With its best days behind it, Tess (Cher) is facing the prospect of closing down the Burlesque Lounge. She hires a young waitress (Christina Aguilerra), a wideeyed girl from the American mid-west, who quickly falls in love with the art of burlesque. But it’s her voice that gets her into trouble…Released in Australia in late December by Sony Pictures.

Dr Craig Layt takes an educational approach to breast augmentation How you feel about your shape matters to Dr Craig Layt, a highly experienced plastic surgeon. If you are considering breast augmentation, the first step is to learn as much as you can about the procedure. Says Dr Layt, “Being happy with your breasts is extremely important to most women, and thankfully I can help.”

es rv cu ne

“Most women like to do a lot of initial research before their consultation, and although I do explain every step, from my experience most women do find they have further questions, or would like to share what they’ve heard with their partner.” To ensure every woman considering breast augmentation with Dr Layt can be as informed as possible, he has created a helpful DVD. Designed to feel like a conversation you might have in a consultation, the DVD doesn’t replace a consultation with Dr Layt, but it is a great start to your decision-making. Skin Sense

Coast Lifestyle chats with Kevin Mendelson, global educator and make-up artist for Jane Iredale Cosmetics Q: What can I do to stop mineral makeup from settling into wrinkles and pores? A: Use Jane Iredale mineral pigments sparingly. Not all minerals are equal. Processing and quality of the ingredients influences how the particles relate to lines and wrinkles. Use good brushes to build very sheer layers on your skin. Also, I recommend JI’s Liquid Minerals Liquid Foundation — packed with anti-aging ingredients in a form that penetrates deeper than moisturiser while the pigments rest on the skin surface to make the skin look smoother and moister. Primers help keep the pigment in place to prevent all that ‘sliding off’ and oxidation of pigment. Apply Absence Oil Control Primer to clean, moisturised skin, then apply foundation as desired.

Q: Can I use makeup to put some youthfulness back?

Q: Can you suggest a lip plumper that actually works? I have thin lips and have tried a few, but all have failed miserably. A: We have a few lip plumpers with ingredients like safflower oil and aloe vera with essential oils of lemon and tangerine help to exfoliate any flaky skin cells. The ingredients release over time so that as one wears off, the other begins making sure that lips stay plumper longer. Lip Plumper also conditions and moistens lips in a way you haven’t felt before. Spearmint and peppermint oils, in combination with ginger root extract, help to stimulate blood circulation making lips fuller, a la Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts.

A: Use satin finishes and

Q: Is liquid or mineral powder foundation better for acneprone skin? I have bumps and dry patches everywhere. A: None of Jane’s foundations have oil, so all forms are compatible. If bumps and dry patches frustrate you, consider the Balance Hydration Spray and/or Dream Tint, Tinted Moisturizer with SPF15. This is an oil free skin tint that is anti-inflammatory and keeps water in the skin without weight.

apply to regularly exfoliated and moisturized skin. Use shimmer products sparingly, but by all means, use them. They add light and glow to the face that matte products do not. Keep a moist look to the skin all over. This is more forgiving on lines/ wrinkles/crepiness. Layer multiple colours of blush: one more neutral/one brighter, or layer a subtle pop of bright blush colour over bronzer. We lose radiance as we age and this replaces that without looking forced. Also, lip gloss is every woman’s best friend at any age.

Q: Do you have any make-up tricks to wake up dull, tired skin, without the glitter? A: First start with exfoliating, which increases circulation and gives the skin a nice glow once any redness dissipates. Jane doesn’t add glitter to her foundations, but manipulates the particles to scatter light in addition to reflecting it. This light refraction - not merely reflection - is the illusion that makes the skin look smoother than it actually is. Pores appear smaller, scars and texture like lines and wrinkles start to appear shallower. Jane Iredale cosmetics can be purchased at The Layt Clinic, Suite 1, AHC House, 14 Carrara Street, Benowa or at 32 Tamar Street, Ballina, NSW. Ph: 5597 4100, www.drlayt.com Coast Lifestyle | 41

Survey Says... W

Is the postcard dead? A new survey reveals how we stay in touch when on the road. aiting for word from a loved one on the road? Don’t sit by the phone. These days, according to a recent survey by StudyLogic, chances are they’ll keep in touch through social media. More than 60% of respondents in the global social media study use social media to stay in touch with family and friends while travelling; more than a third (36%) say they’d rather log on than make a call to share good news. One of life’s necessities? Overall, survey respondents ranked social media somewhere near air and water as a must-have in their lives! Four-fifths of respondents said they access social networking sites throughout the day, while 39% said they ‘could not live without’ social media sites. One-third of respondents said they log in multiple times each hour. Habits barely shift on the road. One fifth of respondents say that they check social networking sites multiple times throughout the day while travelling. Blurring the line between business and pleasure Careful what you post! Before meeting a new business contact, more than half of those surveyed check out their new contact’s social networking profiles (54%). Nearly 60% say they have not hired a candidate based on a negative impression from a social-media profile. More than half (54%) of respondents say they know someone who has been fired for something said or posted online. Regardless of pitfalls, social networking’s popularity as a networking tool continues to grow. More than half of all respondents (56%) agreed about the importance of doing business with people active in social media channels; 55% use online social networking to meet new business contacts and maintain current ones. And many use social media to mix business and pleasure – literally. More than half of those surveyed have arranged a romantic interlude on the road using social networks, with men more likely to do so (45%) than women (40%).

Fact or Fiction? Don’t always believe what you read. Nearly 70% of respondents say they aren’t honest on social networking sites; 27% of those fib ‘a little,’ 21% flat-out ‘lie,’ and 20% admit that their postings are total fabrications. Women are more inclined to tell little white lies online; men were more likely to be 100% honest (46%) versus their female counterparts (18%). Perhaps we should go back to the humble postcard?

Coast Woman

Tabatha Coffey, Gold Coast global reality TV star speaks candidly with Alicia Mayer Beverley

Exclusive Interview! 48 | Coast Lifestyle

Coast Woman

hen I rang Tabatha Coffey in Los Angeles, where she is filming season three of her reality TV program, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, she was sitting in her car in a mall parking lot – as you do. In fact, as we all do, but assume that the stars of reality TV shows don’t. But what I learnt very quickly about this exGold Coaster, is that her straight-forward, take no prisoners approach, which has made her series so popular, is no act. It’s the truth. And it is in this Truth that rests Tabatha’s mission, quest, raison d’etre, vocation, evil plan – call it what you will. Her TV series is simply the vehicle for what her heart and mind tell her she must do. And a powerful vehicle it is, with millions tuning in to the show in the US, Australia and around the world, to watch Tabatha ‘take over’ a failing hair salon, and resurrect it like Lazarus rising from the dead. Give em’ what they want Produced by the American reality TV giant Bravo, the same people who brought you Top Chef, The Real Housewives series, and Millionaire Matchmaker among others, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover is a prime example of the motto that ruled Hollywood, and then the American TV business – give them what they want. And it was Tabatha, as a contestant on another reality TV program Hair Guru, that American viewers wanted. Though she was eliminated in round three of the competition aimed at discovering the best hair dresser, she won the vote for audience favourite. That kind of popularity contest is how shrewd producers choose new stars: the viewers loved her, let’s give them more. And so six months after her

elimination, Bravo contacted Tabatha to begin discussions about her own reality TV program. Says Tabatha, “We knew we didn’t want another competition style show - that had been done. And I knew that I wanted to help hairdressers improve their businesses. The producers and I started talking and brainstorming, and the salon takeover concept was the result.” What you witness on Salon Takeover, as Tabatha moves into action, pinning owners and staff like butterflies to a board until the salon is transformed, is a woman who feels a deep responsibility to expose what’s wrong and then go about fixing it. A responsibility so intense and visceral that she is not sure herself where it came from, but her love for hairdressing and hairdressers has always been.

hours, but I don’t remember this every having a negative impact on me. I always felt supported and their work ethic became my work ethic.” After completing her hairdresser’s apprenticeship here on the Coast, Tabatha, went to London at just 18 to do further study and find work. She stayed for 8 years and when her mother eventually relocated to New Jersey, she moved across the Atlantic to join her. She eventually began her own salon, tried out for the Hair Guru show, and the rest is history.

“I am always juggling connecting with the world with leaving something for me that’s just mine. I love what I do, absolutely love it. But my intention is to fix one salon at a time. The rest comes with the way I’ve chosen to do it.”

Born in the 1960s, her mother was in the last generation of women who got their hair done weekly, and as the baby of the family and the only daughter from four children, it’s not hard to imagine her as mummy’s little shadow.

Tabatha’s tribe It’s easy to see how hairdressers became her tribe, and helping them became her mission, but her business sense comes from being the product of two entrepreneurial parents, and later owning her own salon. “Mum and Dad owned night clubs in Adelaide before we moved to the Gold Coast when I was eight. I remember they worked incredibly hard and very long

“I read everything sent to me – fan mail, emails, pleas for intervention from salon owners, and even from their customers who don’t want to see their favourite salon go under. And I respond too. I figure if someone has gone to the effort to contact me, and pour their heart out, I have an obligation to reply,” she says. Privacy ain’t what it used to be Today’s TV stars are now expected to be accessible in ways unheard of only a few years ago, but Tabatha embraces new media like Facebook and Twitter. At the same time, anyone in the public eye is on a knife edge where stardom, recognition and notoriety combine to expose you so that there is very little left that is actually private.

Says Tabatha, ”I remember when I was seven or eight years old begging my father to buy me a copy of French Vogue at the local newsagent. I was flipping through the pages and stood there totally gobsmacked by what I saw. The images were magical to me – the hair, the fashion, the styles. It was intoxicating and I wanted to step into the frame and be there”.

“I would go with Mum to the salon with the same excitement as other kids go to the lolly shop. I was hooked on the whole experience. I even loved the chemical smells!”, she laughs.

Her parents have been her rock and role models, and she points to her mother, Norma, as ultimately the most important influence on her life, but Tabatha is the risk taker of the family. She appears fearless and focused, and yet there is a vulnerability born out of her care for others.

What you witness on Salon Takeover, as Tabatha moves into action, pinning owners and staff like butterflies to a board until the salon is transformed, is a woman who feels a deep responsibility to expose what’s wrong and then

Somehow it reminds me that there can be nothing harder than revealing truths others don’t want to see... and how fickle the world of TV can be. After I hang up the phone with Tabatha, thinking of her sitting in her car in a mall parking lot thousands of miles away, I find myself hoping that she never pays a price for the role she plays. An old line, attributed to Lincoln, but trotted out on a regular basis whenever anyone is attacked for their convictions, pops into my mind, “If you stop telling lies about me, I’ll stop telling the truth about you.” Then, thinking about Tabatha’s heartfelt connection to Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, I dismiss the possibility that she could ever stop telling the truth, no matter the loss of privacy, the long hours or her own particular brand of tough love.

Coast Health

Busting

those Exercise Excuses Words: Mireille Ryan – owner Health Guru Boot Camp and co-founder of The Busy Mums Fitness Club

P

eople think that because I am a personal trainer, I never struggle with getting out of bed to exercise. But the truth is I struggle just as much as anyone does. Let me set the scene: I’m having the most blissful sleep and the best dream, when all of a sudden the sound of my alarm destroys the peaceful silence. Now its decision-making time – do I hurl the alarm right out the window? Place my head under the pillow? Or, actually get up and do some exercise? We all know how important our health is. We all know about the alarming increase in obesity and related diseases, like diabetes. And yet we still allow ourselves ‘outs’ when it comes to taking action to improve our health and fitness. The reality is, we can always find reasons to skip exercise, until one day you’re sitting at your desk and realise that it’s been months since you’ve done anything active. Your pants are fitting too tightly and a muffin top has sprouted. Not if, but what… There are always a lot of excuses not to exercise, but there are even more reasons to make sure you do. In fact, there are good reasons to make sure you start exercising today! Once you get into the habit of exercising, the only decision you’ll face is what kind of exercise to do. For myself, I don’t want to rob my husband and my kids of a vital, healthy and active woman. I plan to keep on exercising for life!

52 | Coast Lifestyle

Here are the top six excuses, and the ammunition you need to overcome them:

1

I’m too unfit – Unless your doctor has advised you not to exercise due to a medical condition, anyone can exercise. If it’s been a while, start with a walk around the block for a few minutes. Then build the time up, walk faster, add hills, or go for a walk on the soft sand. Very soon you will find that you aren’t huffing and puffing, and you can try other forms of exercise.

2 3

I’m too tired – The more unfit you are, the less energy you will have, and the less appealing exercise will be. Remember Nike’s classic line? Just Do It! I promise you that exercise will revive you more than a nap would. I can’t get motivated – If it’s hard to get motivated, look at why. Do you want to get fit for a holiday; look great in your bikini; or have more energy to play with your kids? Once you have decided, find a photo that represents your motivation. Place it where you will see it to remind you why you’ve chosen to exercise.

4

I don’t know what to do – We live in the information age so there are literally hundreds of places for you to get the information you need to get started with your exercise regime. Work out with a personal trainer, or find a reliable website like The Busy Mums Fitness Club. Your local library has dozens of fitness books that have workouts you can follow.

5

I don’t have time – Yes, I know you are busy, but are you really saying that exercise is not a priority? If you are pressured for time, why not combine two things into one? Go for a power walk whilst catching up with your friends. Take the kids to the park and kick the ball around.

6

It’s too dark, too wet, too cold – Learn to love exercise regardless of the conditions. If it’s too dark, buy a sports head lamp, or go to the gym where there is light. Run in the rain – I love running in the rain. I feel so alive. If it is too cold, wear something warm. Exercise warms you up in no time and then you can start taking the warm layers off.

Q. Yummy Mummy, Anyone? She Says: Motherhood is possibly one of the most important experiences in a woman’s life. After all, it is what we are here for… to prolong the human race. At the same time childbirth is a huge ordeal, and so is looking after an infant (and dare I say it, looking after the infant’s father too.) Pregnancy, childbirth and caring for the family all leave their mark on a woman’s body. Post-baby body concerns include saggy and droopy breasts, and stretched abdominal muscles that just won’t pull back to where they used to be. That’s before we start on the leg veins! Often weight can be difficult to lose – especially after the second or third child, and diet and exercise don’t seem to work. Do we need to regain our previously gorgeous body? Of course not! Do we want to? Well, that’s a different question altogether. It’s a matter of choice and budget. I remember when my kids were tiny and our lives were jampacked full of nappy changes, mealtimes, nursery runs and snotty noses. The last thing on my mind was doing anything for myself. A few years down the track I was screaming, ‘bring on the mummy make-over!’

He Says: This is a common story from our clients. A ‘Mummy Makeover’ is typically a combination of post-pregnancy cosmetic surgical procedures, which could include tummy tuck, breast lift, face lift, breast enhancement or breast reduction. There are also a number of non-surgical treatments that can include skin rejuvenation, body contouring, cellulite treatment, stretch mark reduction or skin tightening. Since every woman’s body responds differently to pregnancy and childbirth, there is no hard and fast rule about a mummymakeover. It’s always a tailored approach taking into account each client’s individual concerns. Deb Farnworth-Wood is the owner of Australian Skin Clinics, Ashmore and author of Step Away from the Mirror... Coast Fun

Real Surfing is Far More Fun than Surfing the Net!

A

re you looking for something new for the kids to do these school holidays to get them off the computer and out of the house? Sadly, for many children these days, exercise is a dirty word and it is all too easy to sit in front of the computer all day ‘Facebooking’, ‘My spacing’, ‘tweeting’ and generally just surfing the Net.

with water sports on the Gold Coast, and Kerri has worked in tourism and business here for over 20 years.

But there is a way to get them out side having fun and exercising – without them even knowing it! The answer is surfing.

“We are so lucky to be able to operate in two of the best learn-to-surf locations on the Gold Coast,” says owner Kerri Jekyll. “The Spit is fantastic as it is away from all of the busy open beaches and is a true locals spot. The space between the rock wall and the sand pumping jetty creates a safe, protected environment and the wave pool is just awesome. Crystal clear water, loads and loads of perfect waves and no marine stingers. No matter what the ocean is doing, it is perfect in the Cave of Waves every day.”

Of course, surfing has been around for decades and is now popular with people of all ages and abilities. It promotes health and wellbeing, including cardiovascular fitness, as well as strength in the core, back, shoulders and legs. Here on the Gold Coast we have many beautiful beaches, and aside from initial few lessons and some basic equipment surfing is basically free. Surfers enjoy the physical benefits of paddling and surfing, being in the fresh air, as well as an overall improvement in wellbeing. For instance, paddling increases shoulder and back strength; standing on the board improves your leg and core strength. And research shows that just spending time outdoors and enjoying the natural environment is a fantastic way to reduce stress and tension. With surf schools like Get Wet Surf School operating on the Gold Coast, surfing has never been more achievable. Get Wet is a family owned and operated business established over eight years ago by Andrew and Kerri Jekyll. Andrew is a Surfing Australia level two qualified surf instructor with many years experience

Along with their beach lesson held daily at the Spit, Get Wet run lesson in the wave pool at White Water World several mornings a week prior to the park opening to the public.

Get Wet have a unique method of teaching that guarantees you will be standing on your first lesson and with a low student to coach ratio the lessons are fun safe and easy for all members of the family with any fitness level. Says Kerri, “We only hire the most experienced coaches and all staff are police-checked.” Andrew and Kerri have three children of their own and get a real buzz out of parents and children learning together. Says Andrew, “It is such a great activity for mums and dads to learn with the kids. You would be surprised at how many parents come along as their kids want to learn and they want to be able to join them in the surf”. Get Wet have some great family and multi lesson discounts and gift vouchers for Christmas stockings.

Coast Drinks

Summer Sippers Scientifically Sensational

These yummy drinks are not only perfect for our Gold Coast summer, but researchers have found that their ingredients are among the world’s healthiest foods. With mint, green tea, pomegranate, strawberries, lemons, agave nectar – you don’t need the scientists to tell you these are delicious! Two of the three drinks are non-alcoholic and so perfect for kids and adults alike. If you love a New Year’s Day mimosa, why not replace it with the Pomegranate Spitzer? Mint and Tea Cooler with Lime

Pomegranate Spritzer

Strawberry ‘Lemonade’

Ah, what could be more summer than mint and lime! According to recent research, drinking green tea daily significantly lowers risks to death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. And interestingly enough, lime juice compounds the benefits of green tea and increases the antioxidants available for digestion by as much as five times.

According to US researchers, pomegranate juice is the most antioxidant-rich beverage and even surpasses green tea and red wine. Pomegranate juice is also a good source of potassium and vitamin C, and may offer some protection against Alzheimer’s disease. Other researchers have found it may also help lower heart disease risk.

Strawberries add vitamin C, natural sweetness, and a lovely pinky blush to this delicious drink. Lemon juice is also rich in vitamin C. In fact, just ½ tablespoon gives nearly 20% of your daily requirement. This powerful antioxidant fights heart disease, bolsters immunity, and forms the collagen needed for healthy ligaments, bones, and blood vessels.

Ingredients

Ingredients 1 cup frozen strawberries, thawed 6 cups cold water 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup fresh lemon juice (from 6 lemons)

Ingredients 8 cups water 4 green tea bags, 4 mint tea bags 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 lime) 12 sprigs fresh mint divided into leaves 2 tbsp agave nectar 1 lime, cut into 6 rounds Method 1. Bring water just to a boil. Place tea bags in large pitcher or measuring cup, pour water over top, and let steep 8 minutes. Remove tea bags and cool tea to room temperature. 2. Add lime juice and half the mint sprigs. 3. Chill at least 1 hour, or overnight. Sweeten with agave nectar (adding more to taste).

5 oz champagne, sparkling cider, or seltzer, chilled 3 oz pomegranate juice, chilled 3 fresh pomegranate seeds or frozen cranberries Method Pour champagne into a 8 ounce glass. Fill almost to brim with pomegranate juice. Drop in pomegranate seeds and serve

Method 1. Combine the strawberries, 1 cup water, and sugar in a blender and puree until smooth - about 1 minute. 2. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove seeds (optional). 3. Combine in a tall pitcher with lemon juice and remaining 5 cups water. 4. Add additional sugar, if desired, and serve over ice.

4. Fill 6 glasses with ice. Strain in tea. Garnish with lime and remaining mint.

Coast Crime

The Flip Side of

Paradise T

wo homicides and a suspicious death in the latter part of 2010 have reminded Gold Coasters that regrettably, we are not immune to the tragedy of lives cut short through violence.

All three victims – Suellen Pike, Linda Ostle and Janelle Clark – were also mothers – and as we go to print, in two of the cases, their closest family members have been charged with their murders. No charges have yet been laid in the third. While the Gold Coast has its fair share of the seedy side of life, these victims were ordinary residents – a young woman with two little children, a grandmother in her bedroom, and a mother of grown children whose chronic illness and lack of a driver’s license kept her relatively home bound. While our murder rates simply don’t compare to the larger cities, and in fact crime is down across the board, the impact of each of these homicides is felt far and wide – by family and friends of course, but more widely in a ripple effect that includes so many. Somehow, the sheer normalcy of their lives makes their murders more chilling and frightening than that of a crime boss or drug runner. They also serve to remind us that we are more likely to be killed by someone we know, and at least at one time, someone who had been held dear.

Fact File:

MISSING WITH EVIDENCE OF FOUL PLAY NAME: SUELLEN PIKE AGE: 63 YEARS OLD DATE OF DEATH: UNKNOWN SUBURB: BURLEIGH WATERS Suellen Pike lived at her modest Woburn Place home with her 35 year old son and her dog. At first handled as a missing person’s case, Ms Pike’s son has now been charged with her murder. During the early days of the investigation State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers combed bushland near the Burleigh Waters property, and her son stated that she had last been seen with luggage and her handbag as he claimed she was going to visit her brother. But with evidence of foul play, – blood was discovered in her home and in a car, – grave fears for her safety became charges of murder against her son. As we go to print, Ms Pike’s body has not been found. Police prosecutor Constable Rosanna Doolan said “This case has involved a lot of police work and a lot of a DNA and other testing,” she said. Mr Pike’s three day committal hearing is scheduled for April 11, 2011. He will be held in custody until then.

A BLOODY DEATH RULED SUSPICIOUS

NO ORDINARY TUESDAY NIGHT

NAME: LINDA OSTLE AGE: 58 YEARS OLD DATE OF DEATH: 2 AUGUST, 2010 SUBURB: UPPER COOMERA

NAME: JANELLE CLARK AGE: 36 YEARS OLD DATE OF DEATH: 12 OCT, 2010 SUBURB: UPPER COOMERA

With visible injuries on her body, and a ‘quantity of blood’ found around their Garawarra Crescent home, a major crime scene was established in the early hours of the morning, shocking residents of the quiet street and causing ripples of fear through the quiet Highland Reserve estate.

There can be nothing more disturbing than the sight of a small boy standing amongst walls smeared with blood, presumably that of his mother. Yet that was the tragic reality on the night of Mrs Clark’s death as police combed what had been a normal family home in Moorhen Street, and was now the scene of a horrific crime.

Police and forensic investigators trawled through the lovely home for several days and searched through rubbish at the Reedy Creek tip. Mr Ostle, the only person in the house at the time the tragedy unfolded, was interviewed for nine hours. An autopsy on the 58-yearold’s body was inconclusive, and police are now relying on the results of toxicology tests to help determine how she died. According to neighbours, Mr and Mrs Ostle had two sons and two grandchildren, and described them as ‘beautiful, gentle people’ with a ‘lovely marriage’ who had just returned from a trip to Greece and Turkey, and had bought a new car and cat. As we go to print, the mystery of her untimely death has been ruled suspicious, but no charges have been laid. Friends of the couple were certain that ultimately, Mrs Ostle’s death would be determined to be of natural causes.

According to neighbours, after hearing loud ‘bangs’ and the mother of two screaming ‘for her life’ and begging not to be killed, they frantically dialled 000. In a street filled with families and young children, the Clarks did not stand out, and according to neighbours, they had not heard them so much as argue before the shocking events of the 12 of October. Peter Clarke, the 47 year old husband of the victim, has been charged with her murder. According to his lawyer, who spoke to the media outside the Southport Court after Mr Clarke’s appearance two days after the crime, “He is very remorseful and he is focused on his children at this stage,” he said. Relatives of the children, a boy and a girl both under 7 years old, were travelling from interstate to care for them.

Jaguar XJL Test Drive A Jaguar prowls the Gold Coast hinterland!

Greg and Deborah Hough, long time publishers and business owners, take the sensational new Jaguar XJL out for a spin in the Gold Coast hinterland.

G

reg says, “As a self-confessed car perve, it was right up my alley to be asked to road test the new Jaguar XJL.

Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have owned some beautiful cars and this car with its 5 ltr V8 and long wheel base is perhaps the best car I have ever driven. Not only does it handle beautifully with an abundance of power in sports mode which tightens everything on the car including the seat belts, but this car oozes class. It looks spectacular and is a real head-turner. If you’re in the market to be able to afford around $275,000, then you have to take the Jaguar XJL out for a spin. You won’t be disappointed with its pure class, style and power. The verdict: “10 out of 10 for me!”

D

eborah says, “Wow! Don’t for one minute ladies think that you can’t drive a ‘beast’ like this. This Jaguar XJL is the epitome of sheer elegance & sophistication. It manoeuvres like a dream machine and I guarantee you will be the envy of all your girlfriends, not to mention their hubbies & boyfriends! But, of course, if you prefer to be chauffeured, then just sit back and relax in this ‘floating armchair’, you may even watch your favourite TV show whilst on your way to that next function without even distracting your partner. How good is that! Personally, being a car enthusiast myself and a lover of driving, I definitely would say ‘yes’ to this stunning piece of machinery. The verdict: “It truly is the ultimate package in driving luxury.”

Jump on Board the Gold Rush! Words Matt Kirk

B

een watching the news lately? Noticed that the stock market has gone sideways for over a year now? Property prices remain flat, confidence is down and spending is down with it. But hang on a second, what’s up? Gold is, my friend, it’s up – big time and it may go even higher. Much higher! I could write an entire book on why gold has doubled to over $US1300 in the last two years, but I’d rather let you know how you can make money if it goes higher. So what should you do? Well, you could buy ‘physical’ gold, however some investors who have done that in Australia have actually lost money given the combined meteoric rise in the Aussie dollar. You could also buy shares in gold companies, or you could use some leverage and buy what’s called spot gold on the global foreign exchange market. Here’s an example of a spot gold trade: If your analysis suggests that gold will go higher than $US1300, you could buy 100oz of spot gold and for every one dollar that gold advances, you make $US100. If gold hits say, $US1500 an ounce you’re up around $US15,000. The deposit required to hold 100oz of gold is 7% of the value of your position, or approximately $US9500 at current prices. If you are wrong and gold falls, you need to place a stop loss below the market at a level you can afford to lose. Let’s assume you risk $US50 per ounce, i.e. you are risking around $US5000. Another way to be long gold is to buy a call option. This allows you to take advantage of a rising gold price over a particular time frame for a fixed cost. Buying a call option means your risk is limited to how much you pay for the option. For example a call option with a strike price of $US1700 and one year to its expiry date, would cost around $US5000. Ah, the Golden Bull!

While acting is nothing new for young Lucy Fry, who just starred in the new Thirsty Merc music video, she admits to doing several joyful laps in the garden of a public library when her agent rang to tell her she had gotten the part of the beautiful alien, Zoey. “My dad is an engineer and told me I must have a back-up plan to acting, but I figure if I have a Plan B I’ll actually use it. So I’m planning on just being successful as acting is definitely my passion! I hope one day to show my friend and mentor Frankie Savage that all of her time and attention on me has resulted in something very special.”

Local Gold Coast girl Jessica Green, was just on the verge of a massive modeling career when she won the part of Kiki, Zoey’s traveling companion to Earth. Her stunning blue eyes, ridiculously long lashes and beautiful long brown hair will surely make her light up every scene that she’s in. We predict she’ll have fan boys around the world. “My Mum has always been my inspiration. She makes me feel like anything is possible. I am so thrilled about this part, and I don’t mind leaving modelling behind, at all!”

‘Amber’ Philippa Coulthard, 17

‘Brandon’Andrew Morley, 21

Philippa Coulthard is an absolute Brittney Murphy look-alike with her dark eyes and caramel hair. Of the three main actors, Philippa has the most TV experience having been the lead in Network Ten’s K9. As Amber, she plays the role of the girl who has discovered Kiki and Zoey and does her very best not to reveal them to the outside world. Philippa was just putting the finishing touches on Year 12 school assignment, when her mum came in to tell her, with a very shaky voice, that she had gotten the part of Amber. “I told Mum to give me a moment by myself and I ended up jumping up and down on my bed screaming and dancing. I’m so thrilled I’ve been chosen for this awesome new show!”

Brandon is Luca’s serious-minded brother in Lightning Point, and sure enough the actor behind the character, Andrew Morley, is a levelheaded guy too.

‘Luca’ Kenji Fitzgerald, 23

‘Maddison’Paige Houden, 21

Kenji has trained at Australia’s famous actor’s school, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. After auditioning for the role of ‘Luca’ in Lightning Point, he headed off to Los Angeles, which translates from Spanish to mean City of Angels, but really means City of Actors! Kenji was delighted to come back to Australia in a heart beat. “Jonathon Shiff productions always have such a huge audience, which is great exposure for my career.” All the better for girls around the world to fall in love with you, Kenji.

Paige’s previous day job wasn’t exactly slinging burgers as a Billabong pro surfer who travelled Australia and the world on behalf of the massive brand. Not surprisingly, Paige plays a surfer chick who teaches the girls how to surf.

Before winning the role and moving up to the Gold Coast for six months of filming, he had almost completed a degree in civil engineering, and was about to start with an engineering firm. He and Kenji share an apartment here on the Coast and though they couldn’t be more different in background, training and interests, they have become great mates.

She is also the oldest of the actresses with a very poised, calm and look-youin-the-eye manner. No doubt Paige will also end up playing the informal role of Mummy Hen on set!

The Truth About Real Esttate........Is it Black an nd Whitte??? If only the living g room and kitch hen walls of the homes that make up the sub burbs, towns we call home cou uld talk, what and cities that w amazing storiess they would tell of real estate conspiracy theo ories and subterffuge tails that I’m sure would make some of th he seasoned hard men of thee trucking industtry blush! Are we really th hat bad? Is our industry rreally that littered d with overpromising under-delivering g agents? gone to the rung g below that of Have we really g the seedy used car dealer with the t hair slicked over use of Brylcre eem and the back with the o pungent odourr of cheap aftersh have that was a gift from the ffirst wives great aunt a (and please to all thee quality sales pe eople in the automotive industry don't take offense to the simile...I have alll too many timess been referred to the ssmiling assassin who w would sell his grandmo other or first borrn at the mere opportunity to list a property)? de why are we th he industry But all jokes asid that gets bandieed about as the one o with the least amount off ethics and bad press? Is it because there aare a few people who believe that they are the knight in shinin ng armour coming to rescu ue the poor defensive vendor that is in no wayy shape or form able a to protect them seelf....but wait, it's not the vendor these so o called knights are a protecting its the buyers! Truth number o one....who do we work for? We are the onlyy industry that do oesn't go out and buy our sto ock, although thaat depends on who you are speeaking with, we have to earn the right to represent a home ow wner and navigate them tthrough the real estate jungle that is selling. W Without the vend dor we don't have an opportunity to make a sale! s Don't get me wrong our b buyers are very im mportant to the process for without them we are without gotiating a deal, however, h we a chance of neg should be unashamedly working for our vendors to maxximise every single dollar there is out there in th he market place.. To the buyers reading this artiicle, please reme ember to get the name of thaat agent who cam me back time and time again to ask you for an n increased bid a get the or just that littlee bit extra to try and deal over the lin ne...that is the ag gent that you want to employy when the time comes to sell your home, the one that will alw ways come back and ask on ne last time "is th hat the absolute best yo ou've got"? Gerry Harvey on nce famously said d "I put twice as many ads on the telly in the downtimes", d does this spur b buyer interest or just j make a business ownerr feel good that their t product

is being seen n by twice as many people twice as many timees? I guess the only person that really knowss is Gerry Harvey himself, the 7th richest billio naire in Australiaa according to the 2010 BRW Exxecutive Rich Listt.

"Rememb ber our job issn't to sell your hom me but to give e you an opportun nity to make an educated d decision...th hat decision to sell is eentirely up to o you." Truth numbeer two....do you need n to market your home tto achieve the maaximum price? We never kn now where that "number one" buyer for ouur properties might come from, so o if you don’t m market your prop perty properly then you maay be costing you urself tens of thousands m more than the maarketing might actually costt. Please look at itt as an investment rrather than a cosst. How many times have w we heard our fath hers drum into our heads "yyou only get one chance to make a first impresssion". We listen by making sure we are preseentable, look peo ople in the eye, shake handss firmly and do evverything we can n to remembeer the name of the persons whom m we just met and this is simplyy when we meet Why then when we w are about to someone. W sell our bigg gest asset do we cower c in the corner at thee thought of marrketing our home e and heaven forbid if the agent actually has the courage to suggest markketing the home a little differen ntly. This is your biggest b asset....you oonly get one chan nce to get it absolutely ri ght. Listen to the e agent that has the courage to sell you the benefits b of marketing an nd not the cost. It is an absolute necessity thaat if not done and done properly you will neveer ever know if you were able to achieve yourr maximum price e. I am a massivve fan of the sho ow "Hot Auctions"; yoou ride the rollerrcoaster of emotions wiith the sellers, bu uyers and in some cases the ag ent. Is there a reaason they never made a show w called "Hot Excclusives"??? Truth numbeer three....do aucctions work? I get asked th hat question at least a dozen times a weekk and it is by everyone from parents at m my kid’s school, to o the drycleaner and even thee young bloke att the DVD store. The answer iis never a simple e one but I will try y and keep it sshort. They work if the process is followed corrrectly and the ag gent understands that processs. The reason theyy work is competition n and fear of loss,, the reason they don't is becaause the agent haas absolutely no idea how to manage the process to provide the right outtcome. Your prop perty doesn't

need to ssell at auction forr it to have been a success, iif your agent has gotten registere ed buyers inn attendance and d they have bid to oa certain figgure then that is 4/5 of the battle e. Remembber our job isn't to o sell your home but to give yoou an opportunitty to make an educatedd decision...that decision d to sell is entirely uup to you.

"A good d agent is wo orth his weightt in gold, the hard thing is trying tto find one worth w weighi ng." A big blacck BMW pulls up p to your drivewaay, a tall dark hhandsome gentle eman with a beaming white smile step ps out with a Hug go da sunglasses and d Boss suit,, Armani tie, Prad sporting a diamond incrusted Rolex...you guessed iit he's in real esta ate. Truth num mber four....do ag gents get paid to oo much? Real estatte is one of the trrue industries thaat you get oout of it what you u put in. In some cases thee flashy agent is flashy f because th hey are proudd of what they ha ave been able to achieve inn, when it is all sa aid and done, a really touugh game. The ag gents that you kn now that live iin the nice house e and drive the nice hat absolutely bu ust car are ussually the ones th their rearr end for their ven ndors, the ones that t are availaable 24/7, the ones that employ admin staaff out of their ow wn pocket so the ey can produuce a better leve el of service to their clients. Yoou may well pay 2.5% of the purchasee price to the age ent but they usuaally und 50% of that only get ssomewhere arou before taxx and then expenses come out affter that. The real estate office e gets the other half h he office, pay rentt, which is nneeded to run th admin staaff, licenses and insurances, amon ngst other thinngs. A good agen nt is worth his weight inn gold, the hard thing t is trying to find one wortth weighing.

The One Facebook Tip Every Parent Should Know

eye to what their children are doing online, or naively view Facebook and MSN as like their own secret diary from when they were young.

Of course, some parents monitor their children’s Facebook usage, and set up all the appropriate account and privacy settings to do what they can to protect their children from potential threats, like peer to peer bullying.

Forewarned is forearmed The biggest problem with not being in tune with your child’s Facebook page, and especially if you aren’t on Facebook yourself or you haven’t ‘friended’ your child, is that you could miss something that needs your immediate attention.

Naive or neglectful? Unfortunately, many parents turn a blind

Although there are a myriad of important Facebook privacy and account settings you

he minimum age to set up a Facebook account is 13 years old, and many parents have let children much younger than this create their own Facebook page and join a social community of 500 million users worldwide.

But many have simply not taken the time to understand Facebook settings.

need to familiarize yourself with, the most important one is to make sure you receive a copy of all notifications and posts that your child receives. This means if your child or a ‘friend’ posts something on their Facebook page, comments on one of their photos, receives a friend request from a stranger, or someone sends them a message, you will know about it – instantly. Why this is not snooping Parents who receive mirror copies of everything are often amazed and shocked at the ‘wall’ posts, messages and quiz questions that their children receive. Some have felt compelled to contact the parents of the other child to advise them of their child’s inappropriate behaviour. Some have also had ‘unfriend’ kids on their children’s Facebook accounts, as well as delete harmful and downright mean comments from their wall. Parents in the know express relief from just being in the loop. It can also be an

opportunity to talk with your child about friendship – what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s hurtful and what makes for being a good friend. The bottom line is that at a young age, experts and parents agree that you do not need your child’s permission to keep them safe! Here’s how... So how do you make sure you receive a copy of everything your child receives? It’s simple: 1. In your child’s Facebook page go into the Facebook ‘Account’ tab and scroll down and click on ‘Account settings’.

Of course, you need to check into what notifications you can receive by going to the ‘Notifications’ tab in the account settings. You will see several lists of boxes that can be ticked, such as receiving notifications for wall posts, when your child is tagged in a photo, when messages are received, etc. Also take 20-30 minutes to understand Facebook’s privacy settings, which determine who can see what relating to your child, including what can be seen on your child’s page for those who aren’t yet approved as ‘friends’.

3. Type in your email in the field, and add it.

Most parents also insist that for Facebook privileges their child must share their password and promise not to change it and lock them out. In other words, social networking comes with a price!

4. You will receive a notification to your email account and you need to accept this so that you can begin receiving mirror notifications.

What if you see abuse or bullying? If you see hurtful or mean posts from another child, remember that it is generally not right to approach a child yourself. If

you know the child from school, contact their parents instead, but be prepared to educate them on how to monitor their kid’s Facebook account! If you don’t know the child and you are really worried about their approach to your child, either monitor the situation further or delete them from your child’s friend’s list. You can also choose to ‘bar’ them and this is done in the privacy settings area of your child’s account tab. Of course, if the situation is criminal or criminal activity is spoken about, that’s a job for the authorities in your community and you will know what actions to take next. Show them how by keeping them safe If you are going to allow your child to be on Facebook, help them to learn how best to use and enjoy the benefits of Facebook by walking alongside them until they are older. Good Luck!

Treat your Rental as an ROI Asset C rasto Properties wants to invert the traditional approach to managing an investment rental property, and enhance its role as an asset in your portfolio.

With 15 years in real estate, 10 of those in Robina, Chris Crasto believes investment properties, and property managers, need to work harder for owners. “A lot of agents manage rental properties, but few of them would focus on increasing their value.”

An investor himself, Chris says his strategy is to improve a rental property throughout the term of ownership, so that when it comes time to sell, “you have increased its capital value to its maximum over that time”. This includes the options of general clean and

repairs, renovations, re-purposing rooms and overall maintenance that ensures an owner saves money in the long run, and in some cases, can pitch the rental higher.

property managers over time at an agency. “Our management makes a point of knowing what’s happening with every one of our properties and liaising with owners direct,” says Chris.

“The traditional focus for managers of an investment property is to install decent tenants for a competitive rate and then hope they stick around. From an owner’s perspective, managers deal with tenant issues and send the bills to the owner.

Crasto is dedicated to this level of personal service. As he says “Our family name is the brand, so we are committed to working with integrity, for our long-term reputation and with the owner’s asset as our priority”.

“Our approach is completely innovative,” he continues, referring to the Crasto team of Chris, his wife, brother Kevin, and professional, highly trained personnel dedicated to the rental market.

So convinced is Chris of the logic and profit potential for owners of the Crasto approach, he is prepared to put his promises into practice.

“We work with owners to grow their asset, with custom-designed systems and the personnel in place to support that strategy.”

Crasto is offering 12 weeks FREE management for those wishing to try Crasto Property Management Services for themselves and experience the difference.

In many cases, owners deal with several different
