Profits Above People

Pan Pacific Masters Does It Again!

The Silly Season

This arrogance is nothing new It’s been a torrent of a time for banks lately with everybody in the media and both sides of politics having a go at them. The anger has been particularly strong toward the Commonwealth Bank with their increase of .45% on interest rates, when the Reserve Bank shocked everybody with an increase of .25%.

Another Gold Coast Sporting Showcase If there’s one thing the Gold Coast knows how to do in spectacular style, is host an international, world-class event.

The silly season has begun. With the next municipal elections still 16 months away, Tom Tate, otherwise known as the “Lion of Surfers Paradise”, has announced he is running for Mayor.

And of course the Coast pulled it off again hosting another recordbreaking, major event with this month’s Pan Pacific Masters Games.

Good for him. The more contestants there are for any elected position, the more choice voters are given and, hopefully, also provided with factual information to make their choice. Mr Tate hasn’t made a good start as the four policies he has enunciated todate are, one would hope, fundamental to all aspirants. These are:

With Greg Hough

FROM THE PREMIER’S DESK

The Commonwealth Bank’s arrogance at determining what they do, in spite of the Reserve Bank’s increase, is nothing new. It is now .85% above official interest rates, and now ANZ has followed suit and is .39% above. As we go to print the others are .5% plus above. So what does it mean when the banking industry can turn their nose up at what the Reserve Bank officials set? Well, there are those CEOs on massive salaries – in Ralph Norris’ case, $16 million plus, and yet he blames the Labor Government, and therefore ignores any criticism that they might throw at him. He is right to say that the Labor Government is continuing to borrow so much money that it causes any Australian bank to pay considerably more to borrow money offshore. There is no doubt that the basket case of a government that many of you voted in to power, is involved in this interest rate scam, as not only are they borrowing far too much and getting us deeper and deeper in the hole, but they also took out all the competitors within the bank industry during the global financial crisis when they guaranteed banks, but not financial institutions. So now we have the major banks making record profits and no competition to speak of. Labor has allowed them free rain to rip-off the average consumer. Yes we can Well, its time we the people did something, and we can! Banks in the US closed over a run of people withdrawing their cash because they were worried they would lose it in the global financial crisis. Some of the biggest banks in the States went under. The Commonwealth Bank is the biggest bank in Australia with 30%+ savings accounts. If every customer withdrew their money this would have a massive effect on their bottom line. The fact is, this weak, wimpy Labor Government is not going to help us. We need to take action and force these banks to listen to people. We are sick to death of $5-6 billion dollar profits. We are sick of massive salaries for CEOs, when we’re all suffering. Get on to your social networks and tell everybody to withdraw their funds from the Commonwealth Bank. That will give them a wake-up call!

Even before the first starter’s pistol sounded, the Pan Pacs had already reached a high with the largest number of entrants in its 12 year history. The Games – a highlight of the Coast’s events calendar and held every two years since 1998 – surpassed 9,500 competitors this year, smashing the previous best total of 9,383 from 12 years ago. It’s terrific that so many people from their thirties right up into their senior years participated across the 34 sports on the program. All part of the plan… One of our Government’s Toward Q2 ambitions is to make Queenslanders the healthiest people in Australia and the relaxed, yet inspiring message delivered by the Pan Pacs achieve just that – encouraging everyone to get out there and have a go. The spirit of competition, combined with great fun and on such a large scale, creates an atmosphere unlike any other event held in Queensland. Sporting tourism means GC dollars It’s also a tremendous boost for GC tourism with this year’s record numbers of competitors coming from not only all around the state and interstate, but overseas as well. In fact, close to 65 percent of competitors come from interstate and overseas, with large contingents from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Japan, Guam and Sri Lanka. In addition, the Games are another great showcase for the Gold Coast’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The world sees us at our sporting best – just as they did last month with the success of the 2010 Gold Coast 600. The television ratings are in and they again show we pulled off a vital international event. The V8 Supercar event won its timeslot attracting 551,000 viewers on race day Sunday. Consider that the event is telecast to 110 countries worldwide and you begin to see a clear picture of how pivotal it is to our international reputation. The ticketholders who came, and the viewers who tuned in, all equate to jobs for the Gold Coast and a boost for our economy. It’s the perfect way to sell the Gold Coast to the rest of Australia and the world.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

1. Listening to the community For the past six years, I have attended at least five to seven residents’ functions each week (as do most councillors). I also participate in a talk-back session on community radio every third week, and a library session every month. 2. Taking the Council “to the people” I tried that but, unfortunately these meetings are boring for those not involved. It also costs a fair sum to set up each venue, and the largest cost of all is the time spent by directors of Council’s departments, who are on stand-by for Councillors’ queries. At an outside venue they can only sit around awaiting their call, whereas at Bundall they can continue with their normal duties while still being ‘on call’. 3. Reduce the bureaucracy This is the catchcry of all political candidates at all levels of government, but in an expanding city like the Gold Coast (even in these days of economic crisis our population has increased by 15,000 over the past 12 months and net employment on the Gold Coast by 12,000) this has always been in the vanguard of growth in the city’s economic, educational, retail and construction industries. If any candidate talks about saving jobs, he or she should be asked where and how – our city already has fewer bureaucrats per 100 residents than any other municipality in South East Queensland. 4. Construction industry moving again Finally, he also promised that he’d get the ‘construction industry moving again.’ The truth is, we’re doing much better than the cities quoted as examples of how the Gold Coast should be going. The facts are that the Gold Coast processed 5,934 development applications last year compared to Ipswich’s 781 and Logan’s 2,069. For the previous year, the figures were: Gold Coast 4,870; Ipswich 650 and Logan 1,380. Currently, 92% of all development applications received by our planning department are processed more quickly than the standards recently set by the State Government.

Lowest Business Confidence in Queensland

The Biggest Taxpayer Funded Project - Ever

Leader of the Opposition

Key indicators down According to a Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland survey the Gold Coast has the lowest business confidence in the state. That’s not news to most business operators who know first-hand the Gold Coast’s key indicators of sales revenue, profitability and average wages are all down. It’s also telling that the Gold Coast is trailing just behind Far North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast – all regions that rely on tourism as their major economic driver. The CCIQ survey result comes immediately after former tourism chief Jim Kennedy’s grim assessment of Tourism Queensland’s performance. Not at peak performance Queensland’s peak tourism body was plagued by political interference, fragmentation, poor marketing and a lack of new ideas, according to Mr Kennedy, a founder and former chairman of TQ. Tourism Minister, Peter Lawlor, admitted few people overseas knew where Queensland is

YOUR Federal member For moncrieff

despite TQ’s 14 international offices. Tourism has been badly hit by the Global Financial Crisis and by a strong Australian dollar, but long-term Bligh and Labor have simply run out of ideas on how to promote Queensland as a world-class tourism destination. Their problem is they don’t understand small business or its needs, and this is costing tourism jobs. With Labor process trumps results Mr Kennedy’s criticisms were directed at TQ, but under Bligh and Labor the same criticism could be directed at just about every government department where process is always more important than actual outcomes. Because we understand small business, the LNP understands success is not measured by bureaucratic compliance, but by a healthy bottom line. After almost two decades of Labor government, Queensland needs new ideas, new directions and renewed energy to restore business confidence and economic prosperity.

Fast broadband at any cost? Hands up if you would like faster broadband. Now, hands up if you want faster broadband, but have no idea how much it will cost. How many of us would commit to a product without knowing how much it would cost or what effect it might have on the budget? This is essentially what the Gillard Labor Government is asking the people of Australia to do. The Gillard Government’s $43 billion national broadband scheme is the biggest amount of taxpayers’ money ever committed to an infrastructure asset in this country’s history. Plan, what plan? The Gillard Government has already started this massive project, but still can’t tell its potential customers what average prices they will pay, how many households and businesses are anticipated to take up the offer and how many premises it will pass each year. And they’re doing it without so much as a proper business plan, and have failed to provide

a proper level of financial understanding of that investment to either the Parliament or to taxpayers themselves. It is almost inconceivable a project of such a massive scale has been allowed to start without the nation being provided with this kind of basic financial information. And remember, at the 2007 election, the then Rudd Opposition stated its national broadband scheme would cost just $4 billion! Spender bender The other factor, which must be considered, is the effect of this huge amount of government spending on our economy. Only last week many economic commentators agreed the Gillard Government needed to rein in government spending to ease pressure on inflation and, therefore, interest rates. This only increases the need for the government to do proper homework on this scheme. Otherwise, it becomes just another chapter in this government’s tale of reckless spending, and it’s you who will once again end up paying the cost with higher interest rates.

Fixing Sun Damaged Skin

Paspaley Polo by the Sea What Could Be More Gold Coast?

by deb farnworth-wood Q. I spend a lot of time outdoors and have sun damage to my skin, including sun spots. What is the best way to treat this and help reverse the damage to my skin? A. Living on the sunny Gold Coast, we often see many clients at the clinic who have varying degrees of damage to their skin from exposure to the sun that has accumulated over time. PDT (Photo Dynamic Therapy) is an excellent treatment, particularly suited to those with roughened sunspots and precancerous lesions. The treatment works by applying a topical formula to the area, such as the face, arms or décolletage, and is allowed to soak into the skin for two hours. The formula specifically targets sun damaged and changed cells, as of course cells that have changed can continue to change and become cancerous, leaving normal, healthy skin cells untouched. It is then activated either by Blue Light or IPL and destroys only the pre-cancerous and unhealthy cells. After treatment clients must avoid sunlight for 48 hours and must then use sunscreen to prevent reoccurrence of sun damage. The damaged skin will peel for 7 – 10 days, leaving healthy new skin. Usually the treatment is repeated 4 – 6 weeks later. Areas can be treated quickly and effectively with long lasting results. Other options for sun damaged skin that will improve texture and tone and reduce pigmentation are IPL, Fraxel Laser, Blue Peel and prescription depigmenting cream. Of course, protecting your skin from sun damage is essential, so be sure to wear sun screen every day as part of your usual routine. No other sport has the reputation for exclusivity than polo does, with its glamourous players and sleek, uber expensive horses. No other location has the reputation for fun in the sun than our gorgeous Gold Coast beaches.

with a passion, which starts with the dashing and dynamic polo players themselves. For more information about Paspaley Polo by the Sea visit www.poloenterprises.com.au.

What happens when you combine them is the annual Paspaley Polo By the Sea event, where the two worlds of polo and seaside come together to create a spectacular showcase that is the perfect special event for Gold Coasters. Now in its fifth year, Paspaley Polo By the Sea, the sister event to the just as popular Polo in the City, will be held at The Spit in Main Beach at 11.30am on Saturday, 18th of December. The social hub, before and after the event and throughout the weekend, will be Tedder Avenue, with polo stars, celebrities and spectators mingling to dine, play, laugh and party in what will surely be the last major Coast event for 2010. Whether in the city or by the sea, the modern game of polo is an extravagant, yet gritty sport that draws you in – there’s something special about watching man and beast working together to send a 4" leather ball across the playing field, whether arena or beach, to score goals in time periods called chukkas. And then of course, there is the people watching, a spectator sport Gold Coasters love

Bedder Times Ahead One man’s quest to make sure we get a good night’s rest Opportunity can come from anywhere and for Mark Chaney, proprietor of Snuggle In, it happened in 2000 when he answered an ad for a bed salesman and walked through the door of the shop on Ashmore Road, in Bundall. He admits to not being terribly enthusiastic – he had been an electrical engineer back in New Zealand, but his contact at the employment agency encouraged him to go to the interview anyway. He needed a job, and the ad said Snuggle In needed someone for an immediate start. Fast forward ten years and Mark is now owner of the specialist retailer, and is grateful for the day he was pushed out of his comfort zone and into the world of helping Gold Coasters sleep better, one bed at a time.

Mark cautions that before you pass judgement on 2-pack as being fine for hotels, but not for homes, think again, as it has been revisited and is ideal for sleek and contemporary looks of all kinds. In terms of future trends, Mark foresees that there will be a revival of country style, which of course was all the rage some years ago, but will be more modern, with no rustic in sight. Says Mark, “After so long, it’s still really a pleasure to know that you’ve created something that is so central to someone’s life, and so important to their health and well-being.” In busy times like today, there’s nothing better than the best bed and looking forward to a good night’s sleep! Snuggle In is located at 97 Ashmore Road, Bundall. Phone 5526 7255.

“A lot of people have shopped around quite a bit with the major retailers before they come to Snuggle In. They have usually seen something they like, or has inspired them, but for whatever reason its not quite right,” says Mark. “What we can do is make it exactly to what the customer wants because we work directly with three specialist manufacturers – for timber, for high quality upholstery and 2-pack lacquer finishes.”

Schoolies warned party photos could ruin lives Schoolies are being warned that excess partying could seriously affect their future, especially if photos of their antics end up on Internet sites.

Mr Simmonds said Schoolies also needed to be careful about behaviour that could see them facing career-damaging criminal charges.

Gold Coast lawyer Bruce Simmonds said the trend to uploading social photos and videos to social network sites, ilke Facebook, could cause enormous stress and problems for school leavers if they were photographed or filmed doing embarrassing things while drunk.

“Some Schoolies do not appreciate the consequences if they are drunk or doing drugs,” he said.

Mr Simmonds said Schoolies needed to be aware of what might happen if they indulged in excessive behaviour in front of camera-wielding revellers. “What might seem fun behaviour at the time might come back to haunt you if the photos or videos are uploaded and then shifted around various websites. “If that happens it’s almost impossible to stop them. “Once it’s on the Net, it’s out of your control,” he said. A candid photo of Lara Bingle in the shower had been widely published without her consent. “There will be opportunists at Schoolies looking to get photos and videos to upload to web sites for fun, or for profit,” he added.

“The Police and Court won’t tolerate these offences and a moment of Schoolies silliness could cause long term problems. In particular the Court’s attitude to drunken public violence is hardening”. Mr Simmonds warned Schoolies that if they do something stupid and are arrested, tried and convicted it could hinder their career and travel prospects for the rest of their lives. “A drug conviction can affect your ability to travel. Those with a drug conviction can be refused entry countries like America. Certain jobs will be closed to people who have been in trouble with the law even where a conviction is not recorded, “he said. Have fun, but remember Schoolies is the event that happens before your future starts, not just to mark the end of your schooling.

fresh FACE OF MUM-PRENEURS

Far from being a ‘make do’ option while their careers are on hold, working from home is a concept gaining momentum with Australian women – mums in particularly, lured by the flexible hours that allow them the time and added income to be actively involved in their kids’ lives. Lisa Gill is mum to two young children, two and seven. As her kids became more involved in their school lives, sports and other activities, Lisa realised she couldn’t sustain a 9-to-5 job and participate in these important milestones in their childhood. Through a friend of a friend, and even then, only from admiring her skin, Lisa discovered an amazing Swiss-formulated skincare range she now represents as a consultant. “I loved it from the start,” she says, referring to the quality and results, visible in just three days. “I knew I could never go back to work in the same capacity, but hadn’t found the right fit for me. Now I work from home, around family commitments, and can devote as much time to growing my business as I want to. I have the freedom to go to sports carnivals and school events, help in my husband’s business and see my friends. Best of all, I am making an income from something I completely believe in.” During 12 years in the health and beauty industry, Lisa was exposed to every cosmeceutical, every “promise in a bottle” niche and mainstream brands launched. “Working for a plastic surgeon, I was sent every new product, so I know what ingredients to look for and in what quantities, and

importantly, how they work on the skin. This Swiss formulated range is premium quality, and what appealed most to me is that it has been tested and endorsed by independent scientists.” While there are plenty of options to combat anti-aging, Lisa is a staunch advocate for prevention. “Maintaining youthful and healthy skin truly is the first option when preventing the ageing process.” Also offering haircare, body, babycare and cosmetics ranges, this exciting swiss product is available online or from consultants. Clients simply order online whenever and whatever suits them. Preferred clients can pay a membership fee of $45 to receive a 20% discount on products. Consultants also reap the benefits – 35% off their own purchases and of course revenue from sales. Acquiring new devotees to the range is never an issue, says Lisa. “I have so many friends who after sampling the products see real results and become hooked, then there are the mums at school. My skin is my best advertisement! Everybody wants to know my secret.” Lisa is planning regular group presentations for people interested in hearing more about this incredible Swiss opportunity, and the products are converting women all over the world. “The best thing is anybody can do this. You don’t need a professional background or any academic qualifications – all the tools – website, training, marketing material and support are provided.”

For information telephone Lisa on 0450 929 606.

Discover Life

Discover China

The icons and the hidden treasures in one tour! As the world’s most populous country and one of the largest in Asia, China offers such an incredibly diverse array of cultural, historic and scenic wonders that it’s hard to know where to start planning your itinerary.

The scenic beauty of the rich Yangtse delta will simply take your breath away as you traverse endless fields of rice, cereals and yellow rapeseed flowers, enroute to the famous ‘Venice of the East’ and silk production centre of Suzhou.

rich agricultural heartland passes by, punctuated with spectacular limestone karst pillars that have inspired artists and poets for centuries. Cruising down the enchanted Li River is quintessential China, and a memory that will stay forever.

The holiday specialists at Travel Masters, National Excellence Award winners, understand this dilemma better than most. They have developed special expertise in China holidays over the past 25 years, designing and fine-tuning itineraries for their personally escorted, award-winning, small group tours.

In Suzhou you’ll visit the Humble Administrators traditional Chinese garden, cruise the original Grand Canal and dine in the old city canal district.

A new addition to this year’s itinerary is an overnight stay in the small and very ancient town of Yangshao, which lies at the end of the Li River cruise. This will be the final opportunity to immerse yourself into the wonderful culture and social fabric of Chinese life, and a fitting conclusion to this superb tour prior to the return flight home.

Travel Masters have combined the absolutely iconic sights and locations, along with hidden wonders and cultural treasures rarely visited by Westerners. In most cases these are attractions and experiences unique to China, that showcase historic and cultural elements that make China what it is today. “There really is just so much to see – from the hustle and bustle of the new cities to the enchanting tranquillity of rice fields and rivers; and from historical highlights like the amazing Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors, to the colourful, ethnic minorities of the west,” says Managing Director, Bob Malcolm. “When you add in these treasures that I have personally visited over the past 30 years, we have developed a truly unique itinerary and an experience to be enjoyed by anybody wishing to visit the ‘real’ China, both old and new! We also give our travellers the opportunity to meet local families in some of the smaller communities, so you get a chance to visit all the icons and softly immerse yourself in the social and cultural framework that is China.” Priced from just $7,350 per person twin share, this 21 day program offers a quality travel experience from start to finish, with excellent quality accommodation, the most comfortable transport (including internal flights between towns), and comprehensive sightseeing. “Our hotels are all centrally located in safe areas and we’ve included lots of my favourite restaurants where we can sample local specialties that particularly appeal to our Western palates. Food is such an important part of any travel experience, and we take great pride in our selection of restaurants. Departing on 1st May 2011, the Best of China tour starts in Shanghai where you’ll have ample time to explore this ‘Paris of the East’. The Travel Masters sightseeing program includes the old Chinese City heart, the colonial facades of the famous Bund, the incredible Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden Market, a river cruise on the Yangtse, and wonderful interaction with locals in a special visit to a local community.

Next stop on this stunning and varied tour is Nanjing where a visit to the sombre, but historically fascinating memorial Hall of Nanjing Massacre will create memories of a lifetime. Additional visits to the spectacular Mausoleum of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the ancient historic Presidential Palace and the famous ‘double decker’ 4.5 kilometre long Yangtse Bridge will compliment the time spent in this ancient city.

The Best of China departure in May 2011 has been prepared with many years of expertise and understanding of this amazing country. You can be

assured of seeing the China in your mind, but also the rapidly emerging global phenomenon that has arisen over the past 20 years. You’ll be tempted further when you read the comprehensive and fully detailed itinerary in the full colour brochure, available by phoning 1300 852 799 or emailing sales@travelmasters.com.au. If you would prefer to visit any of the three Travel Masters location on the Gold Coast, just ask to speak with one of the Senior Consultants who will be only too pleased to assist with your enquiry. Join us on the 2011 Best of China tour. You’re in good hands.

Flying to Beijing, there will be ample time to enjoy sightseeing at a relaxed pace. The Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the 2008 Olympic Site, and the Temple of Heaven are all on the agenda, as well as some extra special treats such as the Peking Duck Dinner, a night at an acrobatic show, morning tea at a traditional teahouse, and much more. The medieval Ming-dynasty walled fortress town of Pingyao is a rare UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, a cultural and architectural treasure in an ancient setting reminiscent of an elaborate Chinese period movie set. You’ll never forget Pingyao. Xian, home of the famous Terracotta Warriors, is our next stop, where you’ll also be fascinated by the historic Grand Mosque and other Islamic influences in this ancient walled city. The dinner evening at the spectacular Tang Dynasty Show is one of China’s best.

Sensational Tour Fully Escorted ex Brisbane

The tour includes Chengdu and without a doubt, will provide yet another memorable moment on this stunning itinerary. Here in Chengdu you will spend time being enchanted by the lovable pandas. Our schedule has been specifically designed to coincide with their morning feeding schedule and catch them at their most active. Lijiang, is sure to be a highlight of the tour! You’ll spend time with some of China’s colourful ethnic groups, such as the Yi and Naxi people. You’ll also visit Lijiang’s snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain near the Tibetan border. World heritage listed, the ancient town of Lijiang is an unforgettable Chinese gem, a paradise of canals, ancient architecture and colourful, minority people. SAVING WITH SOLAR POWER

Get in before it’s too late Readers of our regular feature will be aware of the quick and easy savings that can be made around your home, from servicing your air conditioning unit to eliminating insidious standby power usage. And through our feature in Life Gold Coast magazine over the last several weeks, we have also outlined that above and beyond these savings, you can actually drastically increase the money you save and even potentially make money, by installing a solar power system. Solar system savings – a refresher Installing solar works for you when renewable energy certificates (RECs) are awarded to you when you choose to purchase a renewable energy generator. The RECs are then multiplied by five under the Solar Credits Scheme, and this equates to a financial savings – usually around $6000 for an entry level system. The state government offers you either a gross or net feed-in tariff. A gross tariff pays you for all energy your solar system produces, while a net tariff pays you only for the power you export to the national grid. The tariff prices vary from state to state, but originally NSW was offered the most lucrative tariff. So what’s the problem? Like any government controlled industry, it is subject to the sudden and immediate changes that the industry has been experiencing lately.

Just recently, the NSW government drastically changed the feed in tariffs relating to the sale of power back to the gridwe now have the house hold budgets have taken another hit with the recent interest rate increases.. This could easily happen here in Queensland overnight. As such, we recommend that you avoid the unknown and, take action against your rising power costs now by installing a solar power system as soon as possible. You can take the fate of your power bill out of the government’s hands and ensure you reap the rewards of renewable energy before it’s too late. Take the doubt out of the future, and take control of your rising costs and your future out of government and others hands. Tariff, what Tariff? At the end of October, NSW experienced a sudden and immediate change to their lucrative gross feed-in tariff. The change was effective as of midnight the day it was announced. This is not unusual – state governments have previously decided to instantly close various solar schemes, giving little or no notice to the industry and consumers.

Q

&A

Craig Mallory, CEO, Beyond Building Energy Q. I’m really not sure about PV solar, why do you think I should buy now? This way you can ensure you get the great discount offered by the REC’s and lock in the 44 cents per kWh offered by the Queensland government’s net feed-in tariff. With power prices expected to rise 13% this year and a further hike next year, there is really no end in sight. Power prices are expected to continue to rise for the next decade and the only way to combat this is to implement our simple energy savings and to install a solar power system. Relying less on the grid means bigger savings for you every time your power bill rolls around. At the end of the day you won’t regret installing a solar power system, but you sure will regret it if you don’t. Plan for your future today and look at installing a Beyond Building Energy solar power system before the new year.

A. It is fair to say that the solar industry first boomed in Australia on the back of generous government incentives via rebates, varied feedin tariffs and now the REC’s system, which at first glance can be confusing. It is a system that consists of a multiplication of REC’s credits up to a certain level and varying prices of the REC as a currency that fluctuates in price daily. Due to our strength and size in the PV solar sector we have maximised our position through sound business strategies and disciplines. Particular areas of strength are in manufacturing under licence, and the hedging of our many thousands of REC’s we generate and supply them on forwarded contracts. This ensures that as the sensible solar choice we offer industry-best pricing and speedy installation, allowing you to reduce your power bill, improve your cash flow and create some security in this ever changing world. Q. If the government isn’t going to be offering better solar incentives in the future why should I even bother switching to solar? A. Many people were asking this after the NSW state government cut its tariff down last month. The point everyone was missing though, is even though the tariff has been reduced, this doesn’t mean you still cannot save on your power bill. Its important to point out that this announcement was for NSW customers only and Queensland residents still have very generous incentives to install a PV solar system. The general idea is that governments will not take back what you have contracted for, so take out the confusion and install now, creating security in your home economics.

Time to run not walk The unfortunate truth is good things don’t last forever and that seems to be the way with the government solar benefits. What this means for you is if you’re thinking about making the switch to solar, do it now!

We will pay your power bill! Invest in a solar power system from $2995* and we’ll pay your power bill until it’s installed.**

Power bills are on the rise and we know many household budgets are feeling the pinch. Let us help you take some stress away, sign up today and we will pay your power bill. Start receiving solar benefits even before your system is installed. Take advantage of this limited time offer, get your next bill taken care of and receive energy discounts for years to come from your BBE solar power system. Let our family, help your family. We are the sensible solar choice.

No Water and No Electricity Bills at the Ecovillage

D

id you know that you can live in a sustainable home that has no water and electricity bills! Well you can. Located in the Currumbin Valley is a village that is changing the way Australians build and live in their homes. It is The Ecovillage at Currumbin, and it is the only estate in Australia where it’s residents pay nothing to council for their water rates and have little or no electricity bills. That is because it is self sufficient in a very clever way. Not only that, but the clever homes that are being built there are stunning in their appeal. All you need to do is to visit The Ecovillage in the Currumbin Valley to find out all about it. You can discover three important things:

1 1. How to live in an eco friendly environment by living at the Ecovillage at Currumbin. 2. See how environmentally friendly homes are attractively built and utilised; 3. Learn why there are so many advantages in living at The Ecovillage and see the delights of the latest Highlands land release; Kerry Shepherd, co-developer and marketing manager of The Ecovillage with her husband, Chris Walton, came up with the concept of the Ecovillage a few years ago. "We chose this beautiful site of around 100ha in the Currumbin Valley because of it’s pristine rainforest surrounds and it’s proximity to facilities and services. “After a considerable amount of research and consulta-

tion, The Ecovillage was created out of a spirit of wanting to help people live more sustainably without sacrificing lifestyle in any way.” Kerry said. “The Currumbin Valley has a good rainfall and the subtropical climate is ideal for being water self-sufficient and growing lots of our own food. “The temperatures here allow designs that don’t include air conditioning and huge resource use. Thereby saving money”. You can find out more by visiting the Ecovillage Information Centre about 6 kilometres along Currumbin Creek Road. The information centre is open 7 days with friendly staff in attendance. Go to www.theecovillage.com.au or ph 55987 355.

o say that Ben O’Callaghan’s home at the Ecovillage in the Currumbin Valley is well designed, is an understatement. Ben is himself involved in the eco-consulting industry and in designing his home in this wonderful setting, he wanted to get it right! He called in one of the best eco-designers in Amy Degenhart of Design Forum Architects and specialist builder Jason Chinnick. The result is his award winning, abnormally high 7 Star rated Ecovillage home. “We started with one of the best positions in the estate, and Amy has done justice to the environmental features of the site and to the spectacular outlook,” Ben said. Ben was keen to ensure that his home went above and beyond the call of it’s green duty. He has catered for every major aspect of enviro-building technique and amenity. The home is built in a spectacular position on a 1147sqm block. It straddles 303sqm of the site. A pavilion-style dwelling, it comprises three bedrooms, three bathrooms, kitchen, dining, lounge and a huge atrium linking the two pavilions.

awards for architect, Amy Degenhart of Design Forum Architects. The concept of an environmental home is to make use of nature’s own elements with little drain on resources. The added advantage is that it costs less too! This can relate to no need to heat a home in winter or cool it in summer. The secret is getting it right in the design. Use of carefully placed eaves in our climate allows sun penetration into the home in winter time but keeps it out in sumwinter that last for hours. In summertime, the thermal mass works in reverse and keeps a home cool. The ‘heat bank’ in Ecovillage homes all have electricity generated by solar panels sold into the electricity grid. Ben’s solar system produces more than enough electricity for the home with the result that he receives money back from the electricity authority instead of a bill. Many homes in the Ecovillage are the same. an evacuated tube solar hot water system. Gas is used for cooking etc via the village’s reticulated LPG gas system. Fletcher Insulation was chosen and is used extensively in the ceilings and walls aiding temperature comfort in the home through all seasons. uilding an environmentally friendly home is vastly different to the normal build, just ask leading eco home builder Jason Chinnick. It takes about three times longer than the usual build in Australia, mainly because of procuring and preparing the recycled materials before construction. It is a surprise to many the homes built at The Ecovillage are designed to last an amazing 500 years! "Eco building is about smart design and material choices, and both are about education and need not cost more than conventional methods. Whichever project we are on, high quality and well built is a given factor,” Jason says. Jason and his Too Easy Builders don't just build eco friendly homes, also specialising in large acreage homes. This featured home is the winner of the HIA Greensmart Gold Coast and Northern Rivers energy efficiency awards.
