hile we were preparing this issue of Coast Lifestyle, the historic Queensland floods and then Cyclone Yasi, brought us stories of tragedy, joy, bravery and triumph. At times it was hard to focus on fashion, films and the lighter side of life, while so many, so close, were in their darkest hour. What it did do, as painful and challenging times always do, is to help us all to refocus our priorities. Though we endured epic rain here on the Coast, we were thankfully spared the flooding. Nevertheless, many a Gold Coaster was affected – whether it was through family and friends, cancelled hospital visits, lost business and just the sheer shock at what we witnessed. The Queensland floods reminded us that indeed, life is about that special place we call home, but most importantly, about

relationships – with loved ones, our friends and our community. In this issue of Coast Lifestyle we are thrilled to showcase several amazing relationships – Dee Bounds with her beautiful family, four Gold Coast fathers and their gorgeous kids, Hugh Mackay and what it means to be us, and the CEO of Mambo, Angus Kingsmill and Australia’s relationship with this iconic brand. It’s a bumper issue about all that is real, and because we also need the light and airy to help carry us through hard times – there’s lots of fun stuff too!

Hollywood Loves Our Actors Jacki Weaver
Chris Hemsworth
On top of the fame game at 63!
Another gorgeous Aussie leading man hammers the silver screen.
The list of acting awards both here and overseas that Jacki Weaver has been nominated for since her performance as the chilling Grandma Smurf in Animal Kingdom is as long as your arm. She has won more than a handful too, winning best actress awards in Australia at both the AFI and IF awards, and best supporting actress gongs in the US from the National Board of Review, the Los Angeles Film Critics Awards, the San Francisco Film Critics Awards, Utah Film Critics Association Awards, and the Satellite Awards. But, as we go to print, with her shock nomination for best supporting actress from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and having missed out on a Golden Globe, Jacki Weaver is waiting on the ‘biggie’ of the awards season – the Oscar. In this fickle business, not only has Jacki Weaver had an enviable film and theatre career spanning back 40 years or more, but our spies tell us that she is also incredibly loyal, having been with the one talent management company, International Casting Service, since she was 14 years old! Good luck at the Oscars on February 27, Jacki!
According to Hollywood, Australia grows leading men and women on some magical tree in the Outback purely for the benefit of the next blockbuster movie. Chris Hemsworth, in the same mould as last year’s new hunk, Sam Worthington of Avatar and Clash of the Titans, will start his film career with a bang (pardon the pun) in Thor, a Marvel Comics/Paramount Pictures production, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. But unlike Sam Worthington, who really came out of nowhere to emerge in starring roles, Chris Hemsworth was well known to many Aussies as Kim Hyde in Home and Away. He moved on from the soapie to roles in Star Trek and Ca$h, but Thor will bring him to the world’s attention. Note to self: find that magical tree and discover which hot Aussie actor is next!
New on DVD Summer Coda, directed by Richard Gray, distributed by Madman Entertainment. Summer Coda is a beautiful love story set amongst the orange groves of Mildura. Both Heidi and Michael have painful secrets they are afraid to reveal. The film stars Rachael Taylor (Transformers, Bottle Shock, Cedar Boys) and Alex Dimitriades (Head On, La Spagnola), plus an amazing supporting cast, including Susie Porter, Jacki Weaver, Nathan Phillips, Angus Sampson and Cassandra Magrath. This is the ideal DVD to grab for a lazy Sunday.
Upcoming films for the holidays Justin Bieber, Never Say Never, rating TBA, Paramount Pictures – out 7 April Hop, rated G, Universal Pictures – out 7 April Paul, Universal Pictures – out 14 April

Jebediah It’s been a while between drinks for Jebs fans, but their new album is set to reignite the flame. Jebediah have scaled new heights with Kosciuszko released on their new label Dew Process in 2011. Jedediah first grabbed the nation by the nether-regions with their multi-platinum debut album Slightly Odway featuring hit songs Leaving Home, Teflon and Harpoon. Since then, they have released a slew of hits and played across Australia and the world. Recorded in Perth over several months with Dave Parkin (Sugar Army, Snowman, Karnivool) at the helm, the new album is an exciting musical enterprise with a dynamic take on rock’n’roll.
Bob Geldof
How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell is Bob Geldof’s first album since 2001’s Sex, Age & Death, and is his fourth album as a solo artist (his tenth if you include his work in his band the Boomtown R a t s ) . Th e a l b u m fe a t u r e s 1 4 n e w Geldof compositions recorded with his band in his home in London and in various friends’ studios. Produced by his longtime collaborator Pete Briquette, the album is full of love, hope and joy and one senses that Geldof is more comfortable in his own skin than ever before.
Gnomeo & Juliet
DJ Jolyon Petch is a force to be reckoned with – he’s launched his own label, Club Luxury Records, launched a DJ school with his business partner Brett Allen, and travels the world as a top DJ. Catch him during his residency at East Nightclub in Broadbeach, where he plays alongside many international and interstate DJs. His radio show is broadcast on Radio Metro (105.7FM) every Sunday night from 7pm - 9pm. But be fast as he will soon be on tour around the globe! www.jolyonpetch.com
If you loved the movie Gnomeo & Juliet you have to have the CD! The 14-track album features nine new and classic songs by one of pop music’s all-time greatest songwriting teams, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and performed by Sir Elton himself. Among the key tracks are two new songs, Hello Hello and Love Builds a Garden, as well as a sensational remake of Elton’s #1 hit from 1973, Crocodile Rock, sung as a duet with Nelly Furtado. The soundtrack also includes selections from Oscar®nominated composer James Newton Howard and Chris Bacon. Now you can finally chuck out the kids’ music in the car CD player!

Book Review
What Makes Us Tick The 10 Desires That Drive Us Author: Hugh Mackay Publisher: Hachette Australia Well before the explosion of reality TV, when everyone from average families to celebrities suddenly accepted having film crews observe their lives 24/7, warts and all, Hugh Mackay was sitting quietly on the sidelines listening to Australians talk about everything from sex to dying, watching them drink at the pub, and interacting at work and at home.
In What Makes Us Tick, The Ten Desires That Drive Us, Hugh Mackay reveals that we are governed by several urges, and when these are in balance, we are at our best. Unfortunately, when one, several, or all of these drivers are out of whack, we can become monsters – from that ego-maniac you worked with, to suicide bombers.
For the purposes of rigorous social research, this meant not engaging with his subjects and ultimately assessing the data and laying it out as papers and then later as a series of bestselling books, such as Reinventing Australia (1993) and Advance Australia Where (2007).
In truth, Mackay gently shows us we are irrational most of the time – often saying one thing and doing another, revisiting the same painful lessons over and over again. But more importantly, if we can learn to be more accepting, more empathetic, more humane and less the human animal, our lives and society as a whole would be better for it.
Now in his new book, as he begins to wrap up his lengthy 40 year career, the ultimate observer allows himself the luxury of being the commentator too.
But ultimately, Mackay’s own revelation and thereby ours, is that his research was always about connecting with Australians one person at a time. In other words, this book is about all of us, and yet it’s just about you, just about your daughter, just about your co-worker, just about your partner.
What Makes Us Tick has the potential to change your life, but a word of warning: you’ll need to get out of the way first because most of our beliefs have not only been with us for all of our lives, but handed down generation after generation. Mackay’s intention is not to deny heritage, culture or tradition, but to give us the tools to find a balance amongst the many, often competing desires that shape our actions and behaviour.
Hugh Mackay
The 10 desires that drive us The first and last desires are the most important and therefore act as ‘bookends’ to the other eight, which are all equal: 1. The desire to be taken seriously 2. The desire for ‘my place’ 3. The desire for something to believe in 4. The desire to connect 5. The desire to be useful 6. The desire to belong 7. The desire for more 8. The desire for control 9. The desire for something to happen 10. The desire for love You might have noticed that some of the ten desires seem very similar to each other, such as the desire to belong and the desire for something to believe in, but once you read each section you begin to understand how important these subtle differences are. Perhaps what’s most frightening about this powerful book is the increasing realisation, chapter after chapter, that if you challenge the beliefs that underpin each of the ten desires, you may be stripped bare. Naturally, the most frightening challenges are the ones that offer us the most growth and inspiration, free of baggage and selfimposed limits.

Leaps and Bounds
I
first met Dee Bounds when I was standing at the copy shop at the Southport OfficeWorks. I remember waiting to be served when the copy shop guy passed me over for whoever was standing to my right. Of course, this was unacceptable. I loaded up my best dirty look to laser the lousy queue jumper to dust. Instead I was faced with one of those unique blond beauties that can stop a roomful of chatter when they make their entrance. I was standing there in my jeans, t-shirt and ten year old sandals. Naturally the mystery lady was dressed impeccably – perfect for New York, Paris, London, and now evidently, Southport. Thankfully, she was too busy briefing the slack-jawed copy shop dude to notice me. A couple of weeks later, I was in Sanctuary Cove with a friend who saw her walk by and called out. Evidently they were old friends. We were introduced. I babbled. Dee was gracious and accepted that clearly I was either of low intelligence or simply nuts. It takes all types, I’m sure she thought. We know each other quite well now, and when I approached her to be the subject of our main Coast Woman profile, I advised her that she would have to undergo a frank and open, ‘journo-style’ interview. Not everyone can handle a snoopy writer looking under the hood of their life, but she agreed. A love story In the 1950s, Australia opened its arms to tens of thousands of skilled migrants from Europe. In amongst this wave were

a young couple from The Netherlands – Conelus, a talented graphic designer and his wife, Elizabeth, a school teacher who taught maths and English. In their 30s and childless, they settled in Redfern, an inner city suburb of Sydney. Life began anew – new jobs, new friends, but it would be years and plenty of heart-ache before they would be blessed with their precious baby daughter, Dee. Just 13 months later, Elizabeth and Conelus welcomed a bouncing baby son, Glen. Now they had their pigeon pair and life was roses. Though she and her brother were coveted and at the centre of their parents’ lives, Elizabeth and Conelus’ philosophy was that along with unconditional love, their primary job as parents was to raise their children to adulthood and set them free to fly away to make their own life, their own choices, their own careers. Says Dee, “My brother and I were so close in age that we were like twins, but very different – I was vivacious and gregarious, he was quiet and cautious. Glen was my conscience. As children we were encouraged to think for ourselves. My father especially wanted to make sure that as a girl I had no limits so that I could truly choose a path for myself.” Very early on, Dee showed an interest in design and layout of spaces – she would take the house plans from the many new developments popping up across Sydney at the time, and cut out the rooms and redesign them to her own liking. While her mother may have played with paper dolls as a girl, Dee played with plans from model homes. By the time she was 19 years old, after saving a down payment from a job in IT, Dee bought, renovated and then sold her first home for a tidy profit, just 12 months later. “It was so easy, but I learnt valuable lessons about property and the psychology of sellers and buyers with those early purchases.” By the time Dee was 21 she had become a real estate agent, was running a wedding car business and consulting within the IT

industry. In the midst of all of this, she met and married her first husband – and in the blink of an eye – that marriage was over. No matter – Dee moved on – momentum, energy and activity were her servants, or so she thought. The ‘good man’ In the 1990s success flowed generously for Dee. Her gift was an uncanny knack of parlaying her clients’ hopes and dreams into their perfect homes – whether she found them, or designed them or provided top end interior design. Dee tapped into her clients’ psyche and delivered. In return, she had the money, the car, the house and now a new husband, a property developer, eleven years older and more established than she was.
Dee by design – here I mean the life, not the company – has, through passion, strength, pain and joy, created something quite magnificent and gracious.
“My parents and Glen and his family, had moved to the Gold Coast. I fled Sydney with nothing and spent the next few years
“We were devastated. Because we knew the outcome – the doctor could not give us any hope at all – the grieving began immediately. I looked at my beautiful brother – 6’ 4”, handsome, vital, loving, intelligent – and could not believe that he would be taken away from us.”
Dee keeps her personal life close to her chest. In all of the times I bumped into her in Sanctuary Cove where we both live, she never revealed the pain she and her family were going through. Finally, after not seeing her for some weeks, I ran into Dee at the shops. She was striking, gorgeous as ever, but there was something in her eyes. She revealed that Glen had just passed away, only days before. Her strength was inspiring – her eyes teared up and her lip quivered momentarily, but she emphasised the beauty of Glen’s life and the legacy of his children.
Still, life was an exciting swirl, and now included an award-winning Sydney restaurant. But in her devotion to her husband, she was lost to her parents and brother. They could see what Dee couldn’t or wouldn’t.
Reunited When Dee’s marriage ended she had just the clothes on her back. Her bank balance, and more importantly, her selfesteem, had been ripped out from under her. It would be at least three years before she saw glimmers of her old spirit again.
At virtually the same moment, Glen was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour with a 100% mortality rate.
From the day of his diagnosis, Glen lived ten precious months. “By the time he went, Glen had achieved peace and was ready to leave this world. He and I connected more in that short time than we ever could have in 80 years.”
“We had it all, but I know now that I missed the signs from the very beginning that his comfort zone involved keeping me in a very small box. I remember his mates congratulating me for having a gorgeous sports car, only to be told later how humiliated he had been. I didn’t get it at the time, but why should my success make my husband look bad?”
In hindsight, after her marriage came crashing down after 15 years, Dee would realise that while many women choose the wrong man because of a fraught relationship with their father, Dee chose badly because her father was the perfect role model. Dad was good, so all men are good.

in the foetal position on the inside, but on the outside I let my natural momentum work for me – I was busy, networking, securing jobs, learning new skills.” The move to the Coast brought Dee back into the family fold. She reconnected with her parents, and gladly took up the role of aunty to Glen’s young son and daughter. The family helped heal her and so did her little puppy, Lulu. Slowly, but surely, life began again. Rebirth & Tragedy In middle 2009 Dee was ready to back herself and started Dee By Design, a property solutions company based in Sanctuary Cove with the goal of offering

Recently, she was voted number 7 of the 20 sexiest Gold Coasters, modelled at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival and the New Zealand Fashion Week. Unfortunately for all of us, Kiki’s immediate future includes a move to Sydney. Good luck Kiki – We see ‘super model’ written all over you!

Photographer – Rebecca Pym
21 year old Palmer, represented by Kubler Auckland Management, started his acting career at seven and has worked on films, starred in the TV series The Sleep Over Club, hosted Channel Ten’s Toasted TV, and played a lead role in Disney’s High School Musical at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. In 2009, he won Best Male Actor at the Warner Roadshow (QNFA) Awards for his role in Down By The Sea. Palmer is now touring Italy with a theatre company. Our loss is their gain!
Cleo has been one of our hardest working young Gold Coast actresses, performing on TV and in film since she was 11, but she is probably best known for her role as Kim Sertori in the Jonathon M Shiff Production H2O-Just Add Water. Now in its 3rd season, H20 has a massive following among tweens and teens in over 100 countries around the globe. Represented by Kermond Management, Cleo’s other credits include the Australian feature film, The Little Things, and the award-winning short film, Futility, which starred her entire family. With those dreamy eyes, who knows what’s next for 17 year old Cleo?

Q. Should You Fix Big Ears? She Says: Children are sometimes the harshest of critics, and often innocently, but I recall the source of my playground suffering as a child were the taunts of ‘big ears’ referring to my prominent ears. As a child I had two operations known as ‘ear-pinning’ to correct my protruding ears, however, the techniques used then were not as effective as those today and didn’t permanently solve my problem. I was so excited the day before I had my ear correction procedure as an adult, which I referred to as my ‘New Ears Eve’ to finally be able to have my concern treated with a technique I knew would have long-term results, be an advancement on the procedures I had as a child and put the visual focus back on my face, rather than feeling that my ears were taking centre stage! As I have gotten older and our ear cartilage continues to grow, I also know that I can have this treatment again with minimal downtime.
He Says: Otoplasty, the name given to the procedure to treat prominent ears, is a commonly performed day surgery procedure for both children and adults. The technique we now employ in most cases uses an electronic scalpel to create small incisions behind the ear, which gives better results and better healing than the standard techniques. It takes just 30 minutes to an hour for each ear and is a procedure I have found to have an amazing result on each patient’s self image. Happily, I constantly hear reports back from my patients about how excited they are just to be able to wear a pair of earrings or their hair up and from parents glad that their child is no longer the subject of bullying or low self esteem as a result. Think Yourself
Slim
Are you having trouble losing weight? It could be that the right mindset is all that is holding you back from weight loss success. 2010 Australian Exercise Professional of the Year, Mireille Ryan gives you the secrets to thinking yourself slim.
T
he words and thoughts we use when talking about losing weight have a huge impact on our actual success at weight loss. Did you know that experts suggest that the average person has over 60,000 thoughts each day? We might be aware of a tiny portion of this internal dialogue, but it still influences our behaviour. So what are you saying to yourself? Here are some tips to help you reframe your thoughts and your inner dialogue. Start with success on the mind One of my favourite motivational quotes is “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are probably right”. There is definitely a lot of truth to this phrase. A lot of people start their New Year’s resolutions already believing that they will not succeed. Why? Because that is what has happened every other year. Starting out with negative thoughts and expectations sets you up for failure, and predisposes you to making unhealthy choices. You need to believe that you will achieve. My good friend Stuart Walter, Australia’s leading sports hypnotherapist, suggests that at the end of every day, you write a diary entry of tomorrow’s successes. When you wake up, you know what your day will be like and this will start your day with a positive attitude.
Positive self talk Shhh, listen to what you are saying to yourself. What you say to yourself is your road map to the future. Your thoughts become your words and your words become your actions. Studies have shown that people with a positive attitude tend to make healthier lifestyle choices. According to a Mayo Clinic study, people with a positive attitude get more physically active, follow a healthier diet and have reduced rates of smoking and alcohol consumption. You can start by reciting positive affirmations to reprogram your mind. These short, powerful phrases encompass everything you think, say, believe and feel. Affirmations can help you end bad habits, develop healthy behaviours, and create a positive mental outlook. Visualise success Visualise yourself exercising and living an active healthy life. Find pictures of yourself at your ideal weight and put them up where you can see them all the time, like on your bathroom mirror or the fridge. Some people make the mistake of putting up their ‘fat’ pictures to help motivate them, but you become what you think about, so only focus on the positive. Choose your friends wisely It is important to surround yourself with people who are encouraging and supportive. If you are exposed to negative
thinkers on a regular basis, your attitude may take on their poor outlook. Avoid ‘all or nothing’ thoughts If you slip up and eat something you really shouldn’t have, don’t beat yourself up about it. Slips in motivation and temporary detours from your healthy eating or exercise plan are a normal part of human behaviour. Avoid destructive thoughts like “the damage is already done, so I may as well write off today and start tomorrow”. Replace this with, “ok, I had a slip up, move on, I am starting a clean slate immediately”. Remember that one binge or missed workout will never make you gain weight. It’s the behaviours that you do afterwards that matters. Live It! The final step is to LIVE IT! We must live the language, breathe it, talk it, walk it, run it, eat it, do it. We must put these words into action. It is no use saying “I am getting fit” and then sleeping in and missing your morning workout. Take words like “I can’t” and “I will try” out of your vocabulary. These words are just excuses. Focus on “I can do it” and “I am...”. Remember, whatever you tell yourself inside, will manifest itself outside. Mireille Ryan is owner of the Health Guru Boot Camp and co-founder of The Busy Mums Fitness Club.

Mambo’s Epic Revival Words: Alicia Mayer Beverley Facing a long list from Day One According to Angus Kingsmill, the day after he took over as CEO of iconic Australian brand and design house, Mambo, the GFC began. Or, so it seemed, because plummeting retail sales, inflexible banks and an Aussie dollar in freefall suddenly jumped to the top of a long list of issues that Mambo’s new owners faced from Day One. Global financial crisis aside, there were other problems that went to the heart of Mambo’s identity, which had arisen after a period of ownership by a public company. With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps most would say that an irreverent brand that had controversially stretched the borders of what is acceptable in Australian society since 1984, would mix as successfully with a public company as a punk with accountants for parents. In fact, during the period of corporate ownership, even Mambo’s most famous icon, their tooting dog, had his whistle removed. Irreverent was not okay. Then Mambo was chosen to design the Australian uniforms for the 2000 Sydney Olympics opening ceremony. Where legends like co-founder Dare Jennings, and artist Reg Mombassa had roamed, if brand alignment was anything to go by, Mambo partnering with the Olympics announced that it was now firmly ‘mainstream’. While this ensured international attention and a new leap in brand awareness, the Mambo of old was on life support. In 2008, a small consortium aptly called the Nervous Investor Group, led by university mates Bret Merriman and Kingsmill, bought Mambo with a clear mandate to return it to its rightful place as one of Australia’s most authentic and unique brands. “Of course,” says Kingsmill, from his office in Sydney where a team of designers evangelistically pour their heart into Mambo’s revival, “the first thing we did was put the dog’s fart back in. Now we are lighting it.” With that important box ticked, Kingsmill confronted the sheer fact that when Mambo was at its peak in the early to mid 90s there were roughly ten major surf/streetwear brands – now there are well over a hundred, all competing for the same shelf space. If nothing was done, their slice of the retail pie could go from skinny to gone.
52 | Coast Lifestyle
The next steps were clear, and the only ones the consortium was willing to take, Mambo would go back to its radical beginnings with as much raw power as a freight train. Jennings had provided the blueprint, it simply needed to be modernised. Bad news is good news On the day before the Federal election, Mambo hit page three of all the major broadsheets, and was the day’s most read story online, for having caused offence with a crucified mouse – classic Mambo. Kingsmill took this as an excellent sign. “It confirmed that Mambo was back. The original formula of machine washable social commentary was working. The reality is that the zealous types are our litmus test. If we manage to piss them off, Mambo is in gear. The worst thing is if no one notices. That’s death,” says Kingsmill. Mambo enjoyed similar free publicity last year when the lawyers for Dr Seuss slapped a cease and desist letter on the brand for it’s collaboration with Australian satirists, The Chaser for the “Hat in the Cat”. In this version, the iconic red and white striped hat uncomfortably pops out of both ends of the famous cat. “I must say Seuss’s legal team was pretty cool, even suggesting that if we were prepared to take the hat out of the cat, that they would be interested in working with us,” says Kingsmill. In the Sunday paper two days later, Kingsmill was quoted as saying that he “choked on his green eggs and ham”, while The Chaser had penned a witty retort to the Seuss lawyers, entirely in the good Doctor’s distinctive rhyming style. Business Time And yet, Mambo is a business and not a brat pack, and with this comes the responsibility of predictable cash flow, which not only keeps the wheels turning, but funds growth into brave new markets, such as Europe, the US, South America and Asia. This makes relationships with major retailers and licensees across 26 product categories vital. “Big W is where we bring our core branded classic style and heritage prints to the Australian public. In Myer and the surf outlets we can offer a premium, cutting edge and fashion forward range.
Coast Trends
The reality is we have to tailor the offering. They are both high quality and great value offerings but entirely different ranges.” But it is in their flagship store in Manly, a cooler than thou suburb of Sydney, where some of Mambo’s most controversial work is quarantined, like a bad-ass killer in solitary. A steady flow of customers stream through the store to buy exclusive prints and to pay homage to Mambo, evidently the only direct link left to Australia’s rebel soul. Kingsmill’s strategy includes forays overseas where the potential for their messages to cut through are the strongest. Early signs are good and certainly the brand is powerfully protected all over the globe. My kingdom for a t-shirt For now though, a revived Mambo needs new blood and through their global artist search they continue to attract new designers who can join the fold. The best of the art work submitted will naturally go straight on to t-shirts, boardies and swimwear – an obvious start for artists hoping to join current Mambo disciples headed by Ben Noble and Shannon Graham and including Reg Mombassa, Robert Moore, Kareena Zerefos, Brent Smith, Phillip Harkness, Ben Brown, Numskull, Luka Du Chateau, Cupco, Mark Drew, Marty Schneider, Josh Petherick, Paul McNeil and Kelly Smith. With that much coolness in one company, one assumes that Kingsmill spends his days as the Hefner of the surfwear world, entertaining swimsuit models during photo shoots for international
advertising campaigns. “Mambo’s needs are gritty and immediate,” says Kingsmill, who does stress the importance of overseeing the bikini shoots of his Goddesses and sharing ideas with his team in his role of top promoter. “Running a studio, setting the agenda market by market, by partner by category, that’s where I spend my time on a daily basis. “In the last 26 years Australia and the world have changed, and it’s harder now to shock and push the envelope graphically and otherwise, than at any time before.” Brand aid The responsibility to not only return Mambo to its origins, evolve and grow the brand, and perhaps even more importantly, stay relevant in an increasingly crowded market, seems a tough gig. And yet there is a Reg Mombassa image from 1997 that remains as confronting today as it surely was 13 years ago. Titled ‘Temptation in the light industrial garden of Eden’, it shows the devil as a snake, wrapped tightly around a tree nestled amongst smoke stacks and power lines. Adam and Eve reach up to him, litter at their feet and an abandoned shopping trolley nearby. For Eve, the snake devil hands her a shiny toaster. For Adam, he offers a pistol. Perhaps the Nervous Investor Group can take a breath and Kingsmill can relax for a minute. As long as Mambo continues in its role of mirroring the dark bouncing off the light, it will survive and thrive as one of Australia’s most important brands.

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. It gives you a chance to make a first impression that people remember.
David had his front tooth knocked out 13 years ago, and has worn a denture (plate) every since. The idea of a smile makeover is to give you the results that you want. At Gerber Dental Group they aim for exceptional and long term results, and we guarantee the quality of those results. The first step to a smile makeover is to assess your teeth and gums and discuss your concerns and your expectations. The philosophy at Gerber Dental Group is “dental care for life”, so a new patient consultation is a comprehensive one hour appointment that involves an examination, digital x-rays, models and photographs, and a discussion about the options available to enhance your smile or correct any problems you may have. Nothing is rushed, you have time to talk and you could be mistaken for thinking you have walked into a five star hotel rather than a dental surgery. The service is exceptional.

Super Foods 5 You Must Eat in 2011 Recently featured on the American talk show, Dr Oz, these five super foods are tasty, healthy ways to give you and your family major boosts of everything from antioxidants to vitamin K, which most of us need more of. Not surprisingly, many of these foods are popular in communities already famous for longevity, like Okinawa, Japan and Icaria, Greece. These ‘super foods’ might start off as exotic, but if you add one or two into your meals each week, it won’t be long before you reap the benefits.
1 1. Imo Sweet Potato
The world’s longest living women live in Okinawa, Japan and eat ‘imo’, a sweet potato with purple flesh, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You might have heard a lot of buzz about blueberries, and yet imo has 150% more antioxidants! It is also rich in betacarotene. Just cook it in the same way you would a normal sweet potato.
2
2. Turmeric Tea
Common in Indian curries, turmeric is a powerful antiinflammatory and antioxidant that can help fight cancer. The same women of Okinawa also drink turmeric as their daily tea. Although there may be many other factors at play, these women also have one-fifth the rate of breast cancer than American and Australian women. You should be able to find the tea in health food shops.
3. Mangosteen
3
This sweet, tropical fruit originally from Indonesia has made its way onto many supermarkets here in Australia. Hidden inside a thick purple rind that you cut open, is a white, creamy flesh full of vitamins A and C, as well as cancer-fighting antioxidants. If you can’t find the fruit, the juice of the mangosteen, which is more widely available, is the next best thing. This is also available in tea form.
4
4. Mustard Greens
In Icaria, Greece, 1 in 3 people lives to the age of 90, and yet there are no cases of Alzheimer’s disease. One of the nourishing foods they enjoy is mustard greens, which is high in vitamin K. Most people in developed countries like Australia and America are deficient in this vitamin and yet it is vital for your blood and bone strength. Mustard greens, which have a light spiciness, are often served boiled and then tossed with a little virgin olive oil and lemon. Let the dish cool for a perfect side dish to your summer meals.
5. Barramundi Fish
If the Barramundi fish were a human, he would be a tree-hugging, salad-loving vegetarian! Barramundi eats plankton instead of other fish, which means barramundi has extremely low levels of toxins like mercury, making it an especially good fish choice for pregnant women, and a great way for all of us to get more fish in our diet. It is full of omega-3s and its white flaky flesh is popular with young and old alike.

Sustainable
Fish ‘n Chips with David Whitehill and Christie Lee Sharpe from Our Blue Backyard David Whitehill and Christie Lee Sharpe from Our Blue Backyard are lucky enough to meet so many amazing people who have their hearts, souls, and in many cases their work, tied up in our oceans and coastlines. These ‘Blue Heroes’ help ensure that our marine animals can survive for future generations. But one area we can all help is through making sustainable seafood choices. In their new column, David and Christie share their Blue Backyard ideas and tips, including a yummy sustainable fish ‘n chips recipe. David: While you’re packing your beach bag for a day of fun, make some ocean-friendly choices. Plastic bags are out, reuseable bags are in. Every plastic bag you don’t use could be saving a turtle’s life! Ahhh, feels good doesn’t it! Christie: Eating sustainably caught fish is another great way to reduce your individual impact. Living in our bountiful country, we’re spoilt for choice. But as a keen cook, I understand how difficult it is to know whether the fish, crab, calamari or whatever seafood you fancy, comes from a sustainable source. David: To put it simply, 'sustainable seafood' is fish or shellfish that has come from sources and fishing techniques that have had a minimal impact on fish numbers and the environment. Christie: It would be great if fish mongers and restaurants put labels clarifying if your seafood choices are on the ICUN* Critically Endangered List. Not a bad idea? That would definitely make shopping for seafood easier. David: But, until that happens we can shape the future of our fish by carefully choosing what we make for our families. Recent studies by international ecologists and economists say that by 2048 we’ll exhaust our fish stocks if we keep fishing at current levels. Will our kids have the pleasure of eating fish ‘n chips with their kids? Christie: Thankfully, the Australian Marine Conservation Society has a simple seafood guide to help you choose your seafood wisely. A great way to teach your kids about this topic is to make

them little apprentices in the kitchen. Not only are they learning where their food comes from, they’re also learning how to cook! David: Living on the Gold Coast we all love the ocean and coasts and what they offer in terms of lifestyle. But we do share them with a huge variety of animals and plants that call the sea their home. If we think about how our everyday actions affect their future, we’ll be able to keep our beaches pristine and healthy for many generations to come. Our motto is: love it, live it, look after it! I Want Your Life! Gold Coasters who make you say, “Hmmm…I want your life!”
G
old Coast girl, Sall Grover and her friend Emma Jensen from Brisbane, are living the Hollywood dream with a TV series deal with famed production company Working Title Films, best known for many of our favourite films like Notting Hill, Love Actually, Billy Elliott and Burn After Reading.
After heading to LA for fame and fortune, Sall and Emma ended up collaborating on a book, The LA Team, based on their friendship and experiences living in the City of Angels, and the men they encounter along the way. Told entirely via email, the story spilled out of them and next thing the writing duo knew, their first novel was done and dusted in just two weeks! As they say on TV, ‘but wait – there’s more’ because only two months later, Sall and Emma were signed by the legendary William Morris Endeavor talent agency to represent them to the cut-throat entertainment industry. Almost immediately their manuscript was optioned by Working Title as a potential TV series. Right now the girls are too busy to pinch themselves. But, Sall’s proud mum, Anne-Maree Grover, the rental accounts manager at PRD Nationwide in Robina, is doing her bit by trying to get the word out that we may be witnessing a new Australian-Hollywood success story. Thanks Mum! Hopefully in the next few months or so, Sall and Emma will have the good news that their TV series has been ‘green lit’ for a pilot. If the pilot does well, generally a 13 part series will be commissioned. If the series is as popular in its first season as Modern Family was, well baby, we have a hit on our hands! Even with these major hurdles to get through, Sall and Emma are naturally very excited and upbeat about getting so far, so fast in the world’s toughest company town. Sall and Emma – we want your life!

Chinese Horoscope
heaven is here in broadbeach
2011 – Year of the Rabbit
Personality Occupying the 4th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Rabbit’s character traits are creativity, compassion, and sensitivity. Rabbits are friendly, outgoing and love family. They avoid confrontation. Classy, sophisticated, expressive, serene, sensitive, wellmannered and stylish, Rabbits enjoy learning about other people and cultures, but are most comfortable at home. Their homes are neat and organised. Rabbits often need more self-confidence to feel more secure. The desire for safe, comfortable environments keeps Rabbits from taking risks – sometimes missing out on good opportunities. Health Though Rabbits don’t usually get visibly upset or stressed, they tend to keep these feelings inside, which can cause them to become ill. More everyday activity will help reduce their stress levels and better their health. Relationships Rabbits are very sexual, but can give more of themselves than they should. Rabbits need partners who won’t take advantage of their giving nature. Such pairings will be strong. Career Rabbits are articulate and good communicators, and can be sought for their advice. Good careers for Rabbits include: diplomats, writer, publisher, actor, designer, therapist, doctor, administrator, PR, and teacher. Rabbits and the 5 elements Metal Rabbits – Years 1951 and 2011: Metal gives Rabbits more strength, resilience and determination. Metal Rabbits are more intense in their actions, whether they’re work-related or romantic. Water Rabbits – Years 1903 and 1963: Like the currents, Water Rabbits prefer to go with the flow, avoiding conflict even in situations that are bothersome. It’s easy to take advantage of Water Rabbits. They’re very supportive of others. Wood Rabbits – Years 1915 and 1975: Wood Rabbits love helping others. This generosity is easy for others to take advantage of and sometimes Water Rabbits don’t realise what’s happening. Fire Rabbits – Years 1927 and 1987: Fire adds spark to the Rabbit’s personality and all that Fire Rabbits do. Fire compels Rabbits to seek new adventures. Prone to tantrums, Fire Rabbits prefer to avoid conflict. Earth Rabbits – Years 1939 and 1999: Earth Rabbits are grounded in reality. Their advice can be harsh, but honest. Home life is important to Earth Rabbits as are money and material goods.

Wall of Shame Just like the old saying, “there’s a sucker born every minute”, every year there’s a shocking list of scams, recalled products and false claims that the Australian consumer can potentially fall victim to. Check out this Wall of Shame!
POISON Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used in polycarbonate plastic bottles and to line food tins to prevent corrosion. It is also a known endocrine-disrupter which interferes with our body’s hormones, and can migrate from the materials BPA is used in to our bodies. This should be banned from use in Australia, but currently is only being ‘phased out’.
Through the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) the federal government has placed an interim ban on mini motorcycles, also known as ‘monkey bikes’ because they can potentially cause serious injury or death.

FA KE CHOICE, which calls itself ‘The People’s Watchdog’ gave Power Balance their 2010 ‘Shonky’ award for making false claims about their popular plastic ‘energy’ bracelets. The ACCC has now ruled that the company misled consumers and has required them to provide refunds to anyone who has purchased one, as well as correct advertising and labelling.
HAZARDOUS The ACCC has recalled two cosmetic products with unsafe levels of formaldehyde – Keratin Complex Soothing Therapy and Locks Lash Eyelash Extension Glue. Formaldehyde has been associated with cancer.
Coast Lifestyle
FALSE CLAIMS The Federal Court in Adelaide has declared that Goody Environment P/L engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct and made false claims about their plastic bags. Goody branded bags were labelled as biodegradable and compostable.
FALSE CLAIMS
S CAM
In 2008 CHOICE gave their Shonky award to Coca Cola’s Glaceau VitaminWater range and called them “cordial”. Unfortunately, there are now many similar products claiming healthiness, but loaded with as much sugar as popular soft drinks. Other countries are beginning to sit up and take action, but so far the ACCC has thrown out any claims against these products.
SEXUALLY EXPLICIT & MI SLEAD ING CLAIM S
In 2008, the Advertising Standards Bureau banned the AMI billboard ‘Want Longer Lasting Sex’ advertising erectile dysfunction drugs. Now the ACCC has launched legal proceedings regarding AMI’s business practices and diagnostic procedures.
CHOICE recently visited 10 jewellers and gold buying shops and received a huge variation in quotes to purchase the same three items they offered up for sale. Prices offered varied from 35% to 89% of the gold value. The worst offenders were cash-for-gold kiosks in shopping centres.
FI R E HAZAR D Over the years, several retailers, including Dimmey’s have been required to recall children’s gowns and pajamas due to wrong or missing fire danger rating labelling.

Coast Profile
The Truth Hurts, But the Brave Fix It Deb Farnworth-Wood’s Australian sea-change Life changing moments do not generally sneak up behind you and tap you on the shoulder. They usually come out of nowhere like a punch in the gut. For Deb Farnworth-Wood of Australian Skin Clinics, that moment came five years ago when she and her family were still living in the UK. A friend of hers bumped into her husband at the school gate and asked where she was. Deb’s husband Shaun replied “No idea... I’m a single parent now”. It was a joke, but the truth was she was working too hard, for too long and something had to change. “It definitely touched a nerve and went to the heart of being a mother. I was determined to be better than that,” says Deb. Of course, what’s tough about change is that it requires you to step out of your comfort zone. For Deb, her happy place is as much a state, as a speed – full tilt. The whirlwind started at just 22 when she became a company director. At 32 Deb was the first non-GP partner in a UK general practice. By the time she was nearing her 40s Deb had a solid reputation as an innovator. In fact, even the UK government had adopted standards and business models that she had established. One of Deb’s strengths is having her finger on the pulse. She saw that people want options for preventative medicine, they want to be treated holistically, and now more than ever before, women and men embrace cosmetic surgery to help them look their best. Deb saw a global trend and acted on it. “I’m at my happiest when I’m dealing with the bigger picture,” she says. It was go, go, go and success flowed, but it was clear that a seachange was in order. The family moved to Australia and almost immediately Deb bought Australian Skin Clinics, which in its short history has leapt forward as one of the top practices in the region. Of course, there is more to come. Says Deb, “Yes the move to Australia has been great for business, but it has also been great for our family’s lifestyle. We’re all happier here.” Australian Skin Clinics, phone 5509 0091 www.ozskin.com
A Model Family Division Model Management Division Model Management was founded in 2007 by former model Kirsten Mitchell as a natural evolution of her 20 year career in the industry. In just four years, Division has made its mark within the local and national fashion scene. With major players on speed dial – Camilla Franks, Lisa Blue Swimwear, Sofitel Luxury Hotels, Magic Millions, to name a few – it is fairly safe to say that Division has ‘arrived’. According to Kirsten, one crucial reason for the agency’s success is creating a family environment for her models. A mother herself, Kirsten is fully aware of the intense and increasing pressures on young people, and credits the agency’s strong support network for her models’ success. Says Kirsten, “Our models are all unique; from photographic, catalogue to runway – there is rarely a ‘one model’ suits all package. It’s important to recognise the strengths and weaknesses and guide them in the correct direction for their look. It’s a cut-throat industry and clients will be brutally honest; so having a strong support base and a positive attitude is absolutely essential.” Another vital philosophy which drove Kirsten from the outset, is the importance of long-term relationships as the key to client retention and growth. This approach shapes how clients experience Division – from first contact through to ongoing bookings. Then, says Kirsten, you have to have what the client wants, or happy models and great customer service won’t be enough. “We’re consistently developing and growing our book to ensure we have the best modeling talent available to our clients at all times,” adds Kirsten. Division’s reputation has enabled Kirsten to establish Creative Division and D Marketing & Events in 2008, which provides talent management for a select group of personalities and actors, fashion stylists, make up and hair artists, and boasts a talented portfolio of photographers. his financial year Australians will spend a staggering $5.8 billion dollars trying to look their best – equating to $258.70 per person. And while some Aussies are relatively low maintenance, getting by with a semi regular haircut and little else, a growing number are indulging in weekly rituals such as tanning, facials, hair removal and personal training, as well as regular cosmetic procedures to preserve their looks.

Lippy Love “This is a sector which has been growing at a phenomenal rate for several years now, with women in their 30s and 40s driving demand,” said Mr Bryant. “In the 12 months to March 2010, we spent $448.5 million on non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments – up 30% from 2009.”
Men are also showing increasing concern about the quality of their skin, boosting demand for laser rejuvenation treatments specifically targeted at the male market. Plastic Fantastic Australians will spend $745.1 million on plastic surgery procedures this financial year, an increase of 3.9% from last year with estimates indicating demand for cosmetic plastic surgery has tripled over the past decade. “Facelifts and rhinoplasty are the most commonly performed procedures, followed by breast augmentation and tummy tucks,” said Mr Bryant. “What would once have seemed the height of vanity, now seems positively ordinary to many Australians.” For Australians classified as obese and overweight, liposuction and lap-band surgery have now become the procedures of choice, with success rates and safety levels steadily rising. Around 15,000 liposuction surgeries are performed in Australia yearly. They are performed purely for cosmetic reasons, rather than health related. In 2010-2011, IBISWorld forecasts Australian’s will

spend between $60 and $70 million on these operations. Lap-band surgeries, on the other hand, are the last resort for people suffering from weight related problems and are therefore performed for health related reasons. The average cost of lap band surgery is around $6000, and its popularity has been on the rise largely due to a greater acceptance of the procedure, more surgeons practising and advocating the surgery, and increased awareness of the health risks associated with obesity. “In total, Australians will spend $115.3 million on weight loss surgeries in 2010-11, an increase of 1.7% year on year,” said Mr Bryant Salon style The traditional hair and beauty sector receives the bulk of our beauty spend with IBISWorld predicting an outlay of $3448 million in 2010-11, an increase of 3.5% from last year. It seems we’re a nation who loves our locks, with hairdressing services accounting for 85% of salons’ total revenue, while beauty treatments make up 5%, and product sales account for 10%. The most common – and popular – beauty procedures include waxing, facials, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, manicures and other hair removal services with women outspending men 2:1.

5 Things
You Might Regret... “I made decisions that I regret, and I took them as learning experiences... I’m human, not perfect, like anybody else.” Queen Latifah
H
ave you ever said that you regret nothing? Do you chalk it all up to life experience? These days most of us see mistakes and bad choices as ultimately making us who we are. We also tend to lump these into the ‘everything happens for a reason’ category. But are there some things we should regret? Then again, there is no time like the present to change, apologise, re-consider or otherwise do something different.
1. Relationship break downs – With our high rate of divorce, not to mention painful rifts with family and friends, are we giving up on relationships too quickly? Perhaps you recognised the scene in the Aussie film, Animal Kingdom, where the matriarch, played by Jacki Weaver, ponders the argument about a card game that broke up her relationship with her daughter who dies before they can heal their rift.
4. Not following your dreams – there is a greater awareness these days that to be truly happy you need to do what you love. If you’ve ever chosen to be ‘safe’, rather than to follow a true dream or passion, there is always that risk that one day you’ll look back and wished you had the guts to grab the bull by the horns. In last year’s hugely popular book and film, Eat Pray Love, the author Elizabeth Gilbert accepts a spiritual journey that takes her out of her comfort zone, but ends up leading to her dream life.
2. Not looking after your health – this spans everything from our mental health and getting help for challenging and painful times, to looking after our teeth, as research now shows that our dental health can affect other areas of our body. Then there is deliberately harming your health, through unprotected sex, smoking, alcoholism, drug use and other harmful addictions.
5. Avoiding the ‘tough stuff’ – is there something in your life you could fix, but you keep putting it off and filing it in the ‘too hard basket’? It’s normal to put the tough stuff last, but there’s nothing more freeing than ‘manning up’ and just getting it done. Funnily enough, it’s often the stuff we avoid that eventually snowballs and causes larger problems later – the ones we live to regret.
Here are five things you might regret:

3. Tattoos – yes they are far more acceptable than they ever were, but tattoos can still cause a lot of strife, especially when you break up with the person whose name you just tattooed across your left breast! Visible tatts can also affect employment and other opportunities. Tattoos on the neck and face used to be the realm of bad guys and prisoners, but many young men, and now even young women, make a choice that will be on their body for decades to come.

Secrets of a
Criminologist
By Alicia Mayer Beverley
Victimology Lesson One: When Opportunity Meets Lifestyle The Scenario
It was midnight and I was driving home from a party, low on petrol, alone, 18 and on a long, dark and unfamiliar road. Sure enough, my crappy little Renault Le Car came to a shuddering halt. As I sat there, I could literally hear my dad in my ear, “Always make sure you have enough petrol in your car. If you don’t plan, plan to fail.” Epic fail. I was hopelessly lost and as it was 1985, there was no mobile phone for me to drag dad out of bed. I sat there and looked at the dark road ahead. Should I get out of the car and start walking? Of course not, too dark and scary out there. At that very moment, headlights came around the bend and were reflected in my rear-view mirror. My heart leapt with relief. Whew – saved! Then I noticed the car was jam-packed with several young men, probably coming from the same party. Boys in packs. They would be full of drink and bravado. My heart was pounding as two of the young men got out of the car. They were shouting and roaring with laughter as they weaved toward me. What do I do now? At the very instant they reached my window, another car came screeching around the bend. The driver slammed on the brakes
and came to a lurching stop alongside my car. Everyone was startled – the boys and I both just stared dumbfounded at the new arrivals. What the? The passenger side window rolled down and two very tough looking women with buzz cuts and leather jackets – I think you know where I’m going with this – leant out and in one sentence took command. “Get the F out of here and go!” It had the desired effect. The boys’ machismo evaporated and they ran back to their car. They peeled out – shouting abuse, tyres screaming and chucking empty beer bottles out the window. The women then drove me to a petrol station, bought me petrol, and we drove back to my car with the jerry can. They sat in their car and watched until I drove off safely. Butch angels – it was a first. But had they saved me from becoming a victim? Or would the boys have done the right thing too? Either way, I found myself at the corner of Crime Street and Opportunity Avenue, and I didn’t need to be there.
The Expert Says... According to internationally renowned criminologist and associate professor at Bond University, Dr Wayne Petherick, my story is an example of risks that some
people take on a regular basis, and of course, is unfortunately very common in young people. The old saying ‘live by the gun, die by the gun’ sums up the reality that a dangerous lifestyle can result in a violent end. Thankfully, that night was a turning point as the fear of what could have happened motivated me to be more careful from then on. Crime Street and Opportunity Avenue meet when lifestyle crosses incident. Check out the two lists below to reduce your potential for becoming a victim of crime. Lifestyle: n Aggresiveness and anger n Emotional outbursts n Hyperactivity, impulsiveness n Anxiety n Addictive behaviors n Self destructive behaviour n Low self-esteem n Depression/emotional problems n Self injury n Dependence or codependence n Sexual promiscuity Incident: Time of occurrence n Location of occurrence n Proximity to other criminal activity n Proximity to criminal, violence, or other aggressive individuals n Availability of weapons n Care and supervision n Victim’s state of mind or perception n Drug and alcohol use n

Coast Man
Sea Woulfe
Since his teens, John Woulfe has converted his yearning for the sea by crafting timber. At 15 he began his shipwright apprenticeship at Cole and Candle Creek near Sydney’s Terrey Hills, working on traditional wooden craft, from sailing yachts to motor cruisers. Words: Jeni Bone John Woulfe’s passion for his trade has grown over time. “The thing about timber is, the more you work with it, the more you appreciate it and learn how to use it better,” he says. In the mid-80s, he and his new bride, Christine, decided to “escape for a few years” before the ties of family and mortgage bound them to one spot. They took off in a 40ft sloop to the Whitsundays, and during their five years there, took full advantage of the lifestyle of sailing, cruising and racing. One particular regatta at the Whitsunday Sailing Club, around 1989, John offered to apply his carpentry skills and make the trophies. “On presentation night people talked more about the trophies than the race. It was a great reaction that sparked bigger and better ideas. But I had to sit on those ideas because we returned to Sydney, built a house and started a family, as there was always the reality of bills to be paid.” Three kids and 35 years in to his career, John suffered a debilitating bout of meningitis that had him flat on his back for three months. “I spent a lot of time thinking ‘what would I love to do?’ I re-evaluated my life and how I wanted to spend it.” In 2004, with the support and assistance of Christine, John began crafting timber, stainless steel and sandstone into lithe, organic forms. “I spent a year getting pieces together and doing some building work to pay the bills. Then when we had a collection, we headed up to Hamilton Island during Race Week for our first exhibition. We thought we’d go back to the
place where it all began.” The event was greeted with resounding acclaim. Now an award-winning artist, whose work crosses over from maritime to all walks of life, John imparts his passion for the sea in his highly stylised, commanding creations. Made from a combination of exotic and rare Australian timbers, stainless steel and sandstone, his striking designs are wall mounted and freestanding sculptures, derived from nautical themes. They are commonly acquired for public art works, residential, retail corporate and commercial offices, resorts and hotels. From regular appearances at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and Sanctuary Cove Art Festival, John has acquired a following on the Gold Coast. The Coast’s interior aesthetic perfectly
suits John’s svelte, shimmering sculptures that equally evoke the breezy horizons of Main Beach, Manly, Hamilton Island or the Hamptons. In 2005, “Hobart Bound” – a 3m long, wall-mounted composition – took out the top honours in the competitive Cromwell Art Prize. The buoyant and breath-taking fusion of silver metal and hewn timbers captures the jostling, precarious start of the legendary Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The publicity surrounding his win attracted interest from around the globe – Argentina, the UK, Hong Kong, the US and Germany. These days, his clients are mostly from the non-sailing community. “I would say over 70% of my work now goes to nonyachties. People just enjoy the feeling, the light, movement and constantly changing surfaces.” John’s art is labour intensive and uses the highest grade materials, so it doesn’t come cheap. But each piece is utterly unique and a superlative collectible. The simpler pieces take around five days, the more complex up to three months, with John working long hours well in to the night. “If it were any other job, the hours I work would kill me, or I would go insane. I find I actually want to get up each morning and get down to the workshop. Sometimes, I come up with the solution to a design problem at 2am and I have to get up and sketch it. Christine comes down and says ‘do you realise it’s 2.30 in the morning?’ but she is 100% supportive and loves the work as much as I do. In that way, I am blessed.” More at www.johnwoulfe.com.au

Universal Principles You Need for Fitness Success
Words: Shane Wood, men’s fitness expert
If you over-indulged over the Christmas/New Year period, and now a couple of months in to 2011 you’re struggling with your resolution to lose the weight and nail a fitness regime – stop and take stock. As men we all have egos, and we expect that we can transform our bodies into something we see on the cover of a men’s health magazine in only three weeks. Changing your health and transforming your body requires three universal principles that will determine the success or failure of even the most motivated of people - consistency, perseverance and patience. Consistency Now I know this doesn’t sound like a very ‘alpha male’ statement, or like a line from a Rocky movie. However, it is that deep rooted intensity, or an image you saw on a magazine or in a film, that probably got you motivated to get off the couch and into the gym. So how do we harness that burst of motivation so that you are consistently in the gym 12 months later looking and feeling amazing, and not fat and tired? In case there’s any confusion: your beer gut is NOT your friend. Let’s face it – we’re all human, change takes time, we all have to work, have family commitments, we all have problems, we all have bad days, relationship problems. Sometimes life can get in the way and our exercise and good eating habits are often the first things to get pushed to the side. But without consistent action, how can we expect consistent results? Perseverance Through my own challenging life experiences I have looked to the sporting champions who inspired me, and sourced as much information as I could to apply it to my own life, and now to the lives of my clients. When you’re going through a tough time, or just having a few bad days, remember that champions aren’t the unfailing pictures
94 | Coast Lifestyle
of amazing humanity that we may think they are. I had always thought they were too. Doesn’t life have to be perfect to be a real champion? Don’t all champions have everything handed to them; have big houses and cars and money with never-failing desire and a superhuman resistance to pain? Umm no. Champions have pain too. Nobody’s life is perfect, and nobody has it easy. Fact. When you’re mentally and physically drained due to uncontrollable circumstances, don’t question your motivation and DO NOT give up your exercising and healthy eating. Sure, some days you’re not going to feel like training, and it’s probably better to take it a little easier during those times, but deep down if you had the desire before, then it’s still there. Keep going, you’ll find it again.
“
Umm no. Champions have pain too. Nobody’s life is perfect, and nobody has it easy. Fact.
”
Patience Don’t beat yourself up, but realise that everyone is human and we all have hard days, sometimes hard months, and maybe even hard years. Life takes time, training takes time and it’s up to each individual to make the best of it all. Eating right and exercising will be the one thing in your life that you do have control over. Motivation gets you started, but consistency gets you results. Patience is indeed a virtue…Many of life’s failures are people who did not realise just how close they were to success when they gave up! Shane Wood is a Gold Coast personal trainer.
