The Greater Building Society Offers The Ultimate Loan Australia’s building society of the year, Greater Building Society, has launched its first packaged loan to provide convenient ‘all in one’ banking for Gold Coast members. Helensvale branch manager, Karen Cane said that the Greater’s Ultimate Home Loan sets the standard in packaged loans. Ms Cane said that the new loan rolls some of the best features from the Greater’s existing, awardwinning, loan products into one package with added benefits. The loan features include discounted interest rates and a fee free transaction account. People can package multiple loans for one annual package fee. Other benefits include: the waiving of the annual fee on a linked Greater credit card; discounted home and motoring insurance; and a free initial financial planning consultation with Bridges Financial Services. Ms Cane said that the Greater is renowned

for having some of the most innovative and competitive home loan products in the market. She said that an important difference between the Greater’s and similar packaged loans is that the Greater has no minimum loan requirement and does not charge an up-front application fee on amounts over $40,000, saving people even more money. “The Ultimate Home Loan rolls all your financial needs into one simple convenient loan package,” Ms Cane said. “There’s no shortage of ordinary home loans, but if you want the Ultimate, then this loan is for you,” she said. The Greater Building Society has been named Building Society of the Year in both the AFR Smart Investor and Mozo people’s Choice Awards. It has seven branches on the Gold Coast. For more information phone 13 13 86 or visit www.greater.com.au

Another Five Star Rating from Canstar Cannex Greater Car Loan is outstanding value Greater Building Society has been awarded another prestigious 5-star rating from Canstar Cannex. The Greater’s New Car Loan has been rated “outstanding value”. It is the only building society to have a five star rating from Canstar Cannex for this product. Late last year Cannex also awarded four of the Greater’s products its prestigious five star rating – two home loans and two savings products. Greater product manager, David Bryde said the Canstar Cannex ratings were more proof that the Greater Building Society offers its members some of the best deals in town – whether it s a home loan, personal loan or an investment. Canstar Cannex noted in its Ratings Report that there was not “a bank in sight.” The Report said “Our comparison of personal loans at CANSTAR CANNEX proves that this is one product where the banks simply cannot compete with the credit unions and building societies.” “Our results show no banks in sight so when you’re next in the market for a personal loan, check out our list of five star loans offered by a multitude of credit unions and building societies,” the Report said. With a Greater car loan you get competitive interest rates, you can make additional payments and you get free Internet banking. There are no annual or monthly fees and your loan can be approved in just 24 Hours. Mr Bryde said that because we are a mutual, owned by members, not shareholders, the Greater can continue to offer its members competitive rates, low fees and better service than the banks,” Mr Bryde said. The recognition of these products by Cannex Canstar is just one of a number of awards the Greater has received in recent months. The Greater has been named Australia’s Building Society of the Year by AFR Smart Investor and in the Mozo People’s Choice Awards.

$100,000 donated for Queensland flood victims The Greater Building Society has donated $100,000 to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal on behalf of its members and staff to help those people devastated by the recent Queensland floods. Burleigh Heads branch manager, Nicky Davies said that the floods had tragically affected so many people and the Greater wanted to make a small contribution to help them to rebuild their lives and their communities. Ms Davies said that some of its members live or work in Brisbane and many have family members affected by the floods across Queensland. “Any Greater customer who is experiencing financial difficulty as a result of the floods should call our customer

centre on 1300 651 400 or visit their local branch to discuss their needs,” Ms Davies said. “Our hearts and best wishes go out to the people of Queensland as they rebuild their homes and their lives,” she said. “As a business it is our responsibility to help where we can and I urge all businesses to do what they can to help.” This advertisement was prepared without taking into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. People, You Have the Power

From the Bottom of My Heart, Thank You

Wisdom is Free, But Not Common

FACT – we are over-governed and over-taxed and the average person in this country is nonchalant about it all. Sure we have a whinge but most think there is little to nothing we can do about it. People don’t even vote because they say ‘what difference does it make’? To me people power makes all the difference – remember at least half of us voted the bozos in that currently run the place. Not that anyone will admit to it.

As Queenslanders, we have seen an extraordinary start to 2011. We have come through possibly the worst flood disaster our State has ever seen as flood waters ravaged more than 70% of Queensland.

There is an old adage I remember my father always instilling into my brother and me: “If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well”.

Take our Council – over the past few years business across the board is down 20-50% so business owners must reduce costs, staff, production, management, etc. Yet the Council continues to increase costs. Why and how can they do this? Easy, they increase their income whereas if most businesses tried this they would lose customers. When you’re the Council you just put in new charges like water rates in the millions, and say ‘tough titties’ to your customers – the rate payers.

Once again we wait with baited breath to see what Mother Nature will deliver.

With Greg Hough

FROM THE PREMIER’S DESK

The Mayor only has one vote The blame can’t all rest with the Mayor as he has just one vote like all the councillors have. He is just a figure-head with no power and no more leadership than any other. The real power sits with the CEO of the Council. Council is the major beneficiary of the new water rates, and as some councillors have said, if you don’t pay they will just increase household rates. Well people, you have the power – vote them out. Get rid of the CEO. Force a new council to reduce spending by 20% per year for the next three years. Forget about building a new $250 million plus head office and reduce the number of staff by 30%. Allconnex will have to reassess Now, if nobody pays the new water charges, the water will not stop flowing, Allconnex will have to reassess the charges and will be forced to listen to their customers – which is you! But right now, they are lead by Council and the state government. We’re not even factored in to their planning. I know people will say that what I suggest is ridiculous, particularly Council, but ask yourself a simple question: in which other city in Australia is the council the biggest employer and the biggest business?

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

And as we feel like there is not much more that we can take, our strength and resilience is again being tested. As I write, Cyclone Yasi has hit North Queensland.

Awesome power As the North recovers from Yasi, other parts of Queensland are beginning the enormous task of rebuilding their lives. The great flood of 2011 drove home the awesome power of water: water that has taken lives, destroyed homes and torn families apart. It destroyed billions of dollars of infrastructure, and washed crops from farms. It left behind economic and social problems that will take every ounce of our resolve to fix. But through all of it, the Queensland spirit shone through and we saw rise from the devastation stories of great compassion, courage and heroism. An army of volunteers appeared as if from nowhere – a mud army – that marched through our streets, moving mountains of debris and restoring faith in our communities. They helped us all back onto our feet and they showed the world what we are made of. As Premier of this great State, I have been humbled by the depth and breadth of the warmth and generosity extended to Queenslanders touched by this disaster. It hasn’t broken our will More than $188 million has been donated to the Disaster Relief Appeal so far and right across the nation Australians are doing their bit to raise funds. Every cent will go to Queenslanders who are most in need, to help them rebuild their lives. I want to thank everyone who turned out to help friends, neighbours and perfect strangers clean up; feed the armies of volunteers, donate clothes, food or household goods; volunteer at evacuation centres; donate to the Disaster Relief Appeal or offered messages of comfort and support.

Cut the costs or get out. It can be done. It has been done. And it needs to be done.

The scars are going to take a long time to heal and the road to recovery will be a long one. But whilst this disaster broke our hearts, not once did it break our will.

I think this is the only point Eddy Saroff and I have ever agreed on.

Through our darkest days, Queenslanders have shown strength and compassion, and this has born us through.

It’s your Life – make a difference.

From the very bottom of my heart - thank you.

BOOK N for

NE’S VALENTI DAY 14th Feb

Celebrate Love at The Lake

Many have questioned – referring to recent flooding, today’s financial climate – if it’s wise for Council to spend so much money on the new administration buildings proposed for Robina. Two points conveniently missed But two major points are glossed over with these arguments – the first is that the resolution is only to proceed with the design phase for the most appropriate, value-for-money office building on the site, with consideration to the size and location of the land. The second point is that we also need to free the Evandale site at Bundall to allow the cultural centre there to be appropriately expanded to optimise its benefits to the community. Rents are costing a fortune There’s no doubt that Council needs to establish its own headquarters in Robina, as well as to provide accommodation for those Council departments currently costing ratepayers a fortune with lease payments on rented premises with rental arrangements that will need renewing during the next three years (such as the Engineering Division). The decision on whether or not to build will probably be for the new Council to make in 2012 when the design is complete and more accurate costings are to hand. But it seems to me we would be better off building to the maximum size economically possible, and transferring departments across as demand arises, while renting out the balance of the space to businesses seeking to be located in close proximity to Council’s offices, rather than to build a smaller-sized structure (at greater expense per square metre) and so pass on to future councils the same dilemma as we have now. Here I emphasise that this in no way challenges Council’s earlier decision to retain the key executives, Mayor, etc, in Bundall while building subsidiary administration centres at Robina, Southport and Coomera to service its south, central and northern areas respectively. All these buildings should be initially built to overcapacity for the Council’s needs, thus providing additional space that can be leased out to commercial operators in the short-term, while providing sufficient space for expansion during Council’s longer journey. This reminds me of another adage – of being “penny wise, but pound foolish” – sometimes a larger initial outlay repays itself many times over in savings across the longer term.

From Recovery to Reconstruction

Now Comes a Flood of New Taxes?

Leader of the Opposition

The Gold Coast has thus far been spared the sort of damage which has been inflicted on so much of our state of Queensland and in other parts of the country. Yet we remain alert to the possibility that nature could once again deliver the sort of events which have wreaked havoc here before. Many places in our community enjoy the usually tranquil delights of waterfront living, whether by beach, river or canal. That could all change in a moment if the Gold Coast or the Hinterland experienced the sort of weather events which recently destroyed whole communities, and saw many towns across the state inundated on more than one occasion by severe flooding. I have confidence Yet Gold Coasters I meet remain buoyed with confidence and, like so many other people across the state, prefer to think first of their fellow Queenslanders in need than of themselves. Queenslanders have been incredibly generous to give what they can afford to help those in

YOUR Federal member For moncrieff

need, whether it be time, effort, encouragement, support or money. The Gold Coast has been at the forefront of those activities, from the efforts of volunteers who collected, packed and delivered emergency care parcels in those crucial, early days of recovery, to those who have since organised fundraising events to collect donations for the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. This appeal should now be the focus of our efforts as Queensland moves from recovery into repair and reconstruction. There is a long road in front of us before some communities and many individuals have their property and possessions restored to something close to what they had before. For some, that may never occur. Now is not the time for petty bureaucracy nor mean spirited decisions as to who should get how much and when. Now is the time for healing and generosity as we show the world what it truly means to be a Queenslander.

It is often remarked the worst of circumstances brings out the best in people. So it has been over this summer as our State has been battered with rain, floods and cyclones. As Mother Nature has served up heartache, the community has banded together and risen up in support of our neighbours. Money in the wallet, but no change for the bus Through this, people rightly expect government at all tiers (local, state and federal) to respond quickly, professionally, and without bureaucracy. In this vein, as a Federal MP, I was disappointed when the Gillard Government announced it would be putting up taxes to raise $1.8 billion dollars to help support the flood effort. Don’t get me wrong, I completely support the need for significant investment of taxpayers’ money by government to help rebuild devastated communities. What I’m uncomfortable with, however, is that the federal government presides over a $350 billion budget and it appears it now needs to tax us all more to raise a mere $1.8 billion. I recently heard

someone remark that it is like having $350 in your wallet and not being able to find $1.80 for the bus. Should we have to pay more tax? After all, the Gillard Government is spending $50 billion on a broadband network, has spent around $16 billion on school halls (with billions of dollars of taxpayers money unfortunately wasted), and of course wasted billions of dollars more on the roof insulation debacle. This is not about politics, it’s about principle. Should we all have to pay more tax to fund the relief effort when the money needed could just as easily be found in existing government programs? If there is a case for an extra federal government tax, should we also accept an extra Queensland government tax and an extra jump in our rates bill? All three tiers of government are helping with the rebuilding. Let’s always help our neighbours, but let’s also expect government to have its priorities right.

Love – we could all use as much of this as possible in our lives. But Valentine’s Day is about romance and with the hustle and bustle of our lives, the art of being romantic can often get lost. To use a food analogy, romance is the difference between a meal served in the world’s best restaurant with the finest wine, rather than drive thru at your closest fast food outlet. Yes, romance takes time, but it’s worth it! So if you have ever complained that today’s holidays have become too commercial, now is the time to put your grumblings aside and take full advantage of this one day out of 365. Consider Monday, the 14th of February a special opportunity that you can grab with your heart and soul knowing that your relationship will be better for it. Whether you and your Valentine are new to each other, or you’ve been together for decades, one day can change everything – but not if you’re relying on a last minute dash for flowers from the servo.

Think, plan and take action and you and your loved one will reap the amazing rewards that only romantic love can offer a relationship.

Here is how you can get romance right this Valentine’s Day and reap the rewards: Connect with why you love your Valentine: Time is a precious commodity in our lives, so being romantic starts with taking time to focus on the one you love. Switch off the phone, TV, radio, computer, etc and do nothing other than connect with why you love that special person in your life, keeping in mind that physical love is only a tiny fraction of romantic love. Reflect on special times and go back to those early days when you fell in love. Remember your first Valentine’s Day – what did you do? Where did you go? What was your first gift? Now plan what you will do this Valentine’s Day. Wear your heart on your sleeve: If you are considering giving a special gift on Valentine’s Day the old standards of flowers, a card and chocolates for women are popular for a reason – it’s a rare woman who doesn’t love a gorgeous bouquet of roses, a card with a loving message and delicious chocolates – but there’s a right way and a wrong way. To get gift-giving right, make sure you choose carefully, that messages are hand-written and thoughtful, that the chocolates are the best you can afford, not from the local

10 Perfect Valentine’s Day ideas: 1. Write a poem for your loved one or 7 reasons why you can’t live with out your Valentine 2. Hand-make a card or add a hand-written letter to a store-bought card 3. Flowers are always lovely, but go to a florist for the best quality 4. Chocolates and special treats in beautiful wrapping are always ideal 5. Jewellery, thoughtfully chosen and beautiful quality or a beautiful charm 6. Organise a couple’s spa experience convenience store. If you want to try something different, connect with what your Valentine would like, not need. If possible, make your card – it doesn’t have to be elaborate, just thoughtful.

7. Have a picnic, even if you meet at a park nearby work 8. Book breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all three) at one of our many wonderful cafes and restaurants

Three Microdermabrasion Options by deb farnworth-wood Q. I am confused by the different types of microdermabrasion – what is the difference between diamond, crystal and hydro-Jet? A. Manufacturers and clinics will always tell you that their machine is the best and latest technology, but the truth is they are all good treatments when carried out correctly and with high quality equipment and highly efficient treatment protocol. The crystal technology uses a hand-held wand which propels a flow of crystals (usually aluminium oxide sodium bicarbonate) onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals. On diamond machines the crystal flow is replaced with a circular diamond head (real or synthetic). This is moved back and forth across the skin to remove dead skin cells. Again, vacuum suction will remove the dead skin cells. Using medical grade equipment, the results from both these treatments will be similar but from a medical perspective we prefer to use diamond tips on severe acne where we would not want crystals to embed in open sores and because diamond tips can be autoclaved at high temperatures to avoid cross-contamination.

Choc-Berry Muffins Makes about 12 muffins 1 cup of self-raising flour

The newest form of microdermabrasion is the hydro-jet. Here the flow of crystals has been replaced with a pressurised flow of water. This could be distilled water, saline or water with an infusion of vitamins and minerals. The hydro-jet treatment is ideal for clients that feel their skin is too sensitive for diamond or crystal dermabrasion, or for those taking some acne medications where traditional dermabrasion is contra-indicated.

¾ cup orange juice

At Australian Skin Clinics we have all three types of microdermabrasion. Our treatment protocol provides a thorough 45 minute treatment and we specialise in the treatment of problem skins. Personally, I prefer a diamond treatment simply because it is possible to get closer to the eye area than with crystal, and because I know those little ‘smile lines’ around the eyes need some help! Whichever microdermabrasion technology you chose, the benefits are outstanding.

¼ cup cacao powder

½ cup hazelnut meal ½ cup mixed berries Third cup olive oil ¼ cup dark brown sugar 2-3 tbsp honey 2 eggs Beat the eggs. Add the liquid ingredients and process together, followed by the remaining dry ingredients. Spoon into patty cases.

James Cameron Wants to Film on Coast Again

What: Byron Bay International Film Festival Since launching in 2006, the Byron Bay International Film Festival has grown hugely each year and now attracts films, filmmakers and film-goers from around the world.

According to Andrew Wight, James Cameron’s producer on his new blockbuster 3D action film, Sanctum 3D, he can’t wait to get back to the Gold Coast to film again. Calling the facilities at Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford some of the best in the world, Andrew Wight pointed out that despite the Australian and US dollar being at parity, issues elsewhere still make filming here very attractive.

DATE SAVER: Friday, 4 March – Sunday, 13 March Where: Byron Bay Community Centre, 9 Jonson Street, Byron Bay Contact: www.bbff.com.au What: Jupiters Presents ‘Sounds of Support’ Flood Relief Concert

“Gold Coasters should definitely feel a sense of ownership of Sanctum 3D, said Andrew in the lead up to Sanctum’s impending world release. “Not only are the facilities and crew here first class, but the Gold Coast is a fantastic place to live in for weeks or months while you’re filming. I was here for nine months in Benowa, and I loved it. Other locations are just not as liveable. And of course, some can be downright dangerous, like Mexico.

Jupiters Casino hits the right key partnering with legends of the Australian music scene who will be donating their time to raise much needed funds to assist the victims of the recent Queensland floods. The two hour event has something for everyone featuring David Campbell, Daryl Braithwaite, Christine Anu, Mark Gable, Damien Leith, Melinda Schneider, Grace Knight, Dragon, Paulini, Leo Sayer, Wendy Matthews and Lisa Hunt. $49 per ticket – 100% of ticket sales will be donated to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal

James Cameron’s Sanctum 3D, is the gripping story of a caving expedition, which naturally lends itself to 3D, and in fact the crew used some cameras from the Avatar production. The resulting film combines an amazing story with edge-of-your-seat 3D effects.
