Moving On in Life
Quiet on Set! Cameras Rolling
Consider the Rate Payers First, Folks
As you may have recently heard, I have sold my publishing business to my staff, in particular the Lifestyle titles including this one to Cindy Page and Andrew Keeley. Both have been working with me for a number of years and this is a great opportunity for them to build on the past and with renewed enthusiasm, grow the business to benefit both their families in the future. I will work with them to assist in anyway they ask to ensure they achieve their dreams and aspirations.
I am thrilled that the Gold Coast is the epicenter of a new boom in film production with cameras rolling on no fewer than four major productions. Of course, this means thousands of jobs for locals and millions of dollars flowing into our economy.
If the media is to be believed, our only two contenders for the 2012 mayoral election both remain unaware of the principles of Local Government. Both are reported as being cynical about my annual goal of keeping any increase to total rates to less than the CPI and, if possible, as close to possible to zero, while claiming they would rearrange the organisation to “save the excess staff” they say exists within the administration.
With Greg Hough
FROM THE PREMIER’S DESK
It’s a great feeling I feel very proud and privileged to be able to give two people who have worked extremely hard, the opportunity to own something they are passionate about. We have been discussing this for almost 12 months and the biggest issue for Cindy and Andrew is the mindset change from being an employee to being the owner. Most people think when you own a business it is all lobster and champagne. The reality is somewhat different; you are the last to be paid for starters, your staff get paid every week, because of course if they didn’t they would not be back tomorrow. Then there’s holiday pay, sick pay and all the other benefits of being employed. As a business owner, you get none of this, but all of the responsibility of your workforce. Owning your own business in these times is tough and requires total focus and commitment to see it through. The Coast ain’t easy… The Gold Coast of course is the toughest market in Australia. Perhaps it is because we have no real industry and a huge percentage of small businesses, but as a result, when times are tough these small businesses are hit hard. As a community, the Gold Coast is also way above the ‘norm’ and leaders in bad business ethics. We can’t seem to shake off the reputation of the white shoe brigade ripping off their grandmothers. It’s not far from the truth and whilst I say that, there is no better place to live than the Gold Coast. Cindy and Andrew have asked me to continue writing Huff and Puff for the magazine. So now that they own the publication, if you thought I was controversial, wait until you see what I have coming up in the New Year now that I can really have some fun! Make sure you get everything you want out of LIFE this Christmas.
In fact, in the last financial year, this industry created about 5,200 jobs and generated $257 million in economic flow-on effects. It’s been a landmark month for the industry and for the Gold Coast, not to mention the recent staging of the 4th annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards at the Gold Coast Convention Centre helmed by legendary filmmaker Lord David Puttnam. Three new television series commenced filming within the past couple of weeks – Slide, produced by Nathan Mayfield and Tracey Robertson of Brisbane’s own Hoodlum Entertainment, Lightening Point from prolific children’s producer Jonathon M Schiff and international production Terra Nova, the eagerly anticipated sci-fi series from Twentieth Century Fox. Set in a grim future when the world is overdeveloped and overcrowded, Terra Nova’s 13 one-hour episodes are using locations around South East Queensland, including Warner Roadshow Studios.
Slide promises to be a unique project with the capacity to revolutionise how TV connects with its audience using online drama, immersive environments and interactive gameplay. Lightening Point is a sci-fi adventure series set in the sleepy surf town of Horseshoe Bay where an unlikely trio of aliens and surfers learn about surfing, friendship and love. Cameras are also rolling on the feature film Singularity, a coproduction between Australia and the United Kingdom, produced by Corsan and Queensland-based Limelight International Media Entertainment. Described as a lush love story that spans centuries, Singularity, is written and directed by Oscar-winner Roland Joffe and features stunning production design from another Oscar winner, Luciana Arrighi. It stars actor Josh Hartnett and Bollywood beauty, Bipasha Basu. And to feed the ever-growing appetite for 3D films, Bait has been shooting on the Gold Coast since October. Produced by Chris Brown and Todd Fellman, the feature film tells the story of a sleepy coastal village terrorised by unwanted visitors from the deep following a tsunami.
Bait features some amazing animatronics, including a shark that I’m told will knock Jaws out of the water. Good on you Gold Coast - I’m looking forward to seeing each of these productions once they are wrapped.
FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
Do your research Gentlemen, Councillors have no control whatsoever over the numbers or deployment of staff within the administration. Had you read the Local Government Act – as one would expect anyone standing for such a position should have – you would know only the Chief Executive Officer has any power in this regard. What Councillors can do, via the budget process, is to reduce the wages and salaries allocation, thus forcing the CEO to make savings. But this presupposes that he has not already been streamlining and pruning staff over the past seven years. At what cost? Of course, everybody in Council has the same mission – to provide value for money to our ratepayers. That includes keeping the screws on staff, on expenses and unnecessary works but – and it’s a big but – the future of the city is also crucial. If we did not want this city to progress, if we decided to have no new parks or sports grounds, or libraries, swimming pools or community halls; if we cut our road maintenance, let our beaches disappear, reduced the standards of our maintenance of public parks and waterways, rubbish collection and care for the disabled and homeless, then we could do it. But, at what cost? Of course, I aim to keep rates rises as low as possible. In fact, I’d love to be able to deliver a zero rise this year – all of our Councillors would, especially in the current tough times. But we need to look at the repercussions – which project could we postpone? Where could we save the money to ensure our finances stay balanced and council’s debt stays under control? Councillors and Council staff spend thousands of hours poring over every cost and every plan for this year as well as next to quantify any effects on our five-year plan and our 10-year financial plan. But it all starts from aiming high. I expected to break a world record every time I ran. Circumstances often worked against me reaching my target, but if you don’t set the goal, you’ll never make it... guaranteed.

No Christmas Cheer for Some
Christmas in Conflict
Leader of the Opposition
Many of us take for granted that we will be able to celebrate Christmas with traditional fare. For most of us preparations will be well advanced, trees up and decorated, presents wrapped and food and drink already bought for a lavish Christmas feast. For others, Christmas Day will be as bleak as every other day of the year as they struggle to pay bills, put food on the table - if they are fortunate enough to have a roof over their heads. Christmas is also the season of giving, the one period in the year when we exchange gifts with family and friends. A remarkable group of Gold Coasters has extended that season to last all year, giving their time and resources to help those for whom life is a constant struggle. Giving year-round Pastor Phil and the volunteers at the New Life Food Barn at Dunkirk Close, Arundel practice the Christian virtues of service and charity every day of the year.
YOUR Federal member For moncrieff
Three days each week they provide food free, or at minimal cost, to people who had been wondering where their next meal was coming from. On Sundays they provide lunch, and it is a measure of the community’s need that on each occasion they open their hearts and doors, there are queues.
In this, the final column of 2010 before Christmas, I would like to wish readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope you’re able to spend Christmas surrounded by family and loved ones, and the days are the celebration of togetherness you hope for.
Although their ministry is built on Christian beliefs, all are welcome, irrespective of race or creed.
This holidays spare a thought for the many Australians who aren’t so lucky and will spend Christmas far from their families, serving in the armed forces in areas of conflict all over the world.
Pastor Phil and his team rely on the charity of others to provide their services, and it is a measure of Australian society that their partnerships include other non-Christian faiths.
The men and women of the Australian Defence Force are currently employed in several trouble spots, including Afghanistan, the Middle East, East Timor and The Solomons.
Many of those who first arrive at Arundel in need return to serve others as they were served themselves.
Our soldiers, particularly in Afghanistan, are doing an amazing job in extremely perilous circumstances and extreme climatic conditions. In Afghanistan, our soldiers have had to witness the death of 21 mates, 10 in this year alone.
If you would like to help Pastor Phil and his team, you can call New Life Food Barn on 5571 6115, or visit their Arundel complex. After all, it is better to give than receive, especially at Christmas.
In our thoughts and prayers At this time of year, more than any other, it is
important to remind our troops they are in our thoughts and prayers. Recently I urged Gold Coasters to consider sending our soldiers serving overseas a care packet this Christmas to let them know we are thinking of them and how much we appreciate the job they are doing. I am happy to report my office was flooded with calls from locals wanting to send packets overseas. It is now too late to send our troops gifts that will arrive before Christmas, but you can always donate to the RSL Australian Forces Overseas Fund, which has been sending pre-prepared packages overseas to Australians troops for many years. (Go to www.defence.gov.au and click on the ‘Support the Troops’ link.) And you can still send messages of support by email and fax at messagestothetroops@defence. gov.au, or 02 6266 7701 respectively. Once again, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and, above all, a safe holiday season.

Local News William House Given the Goods to Fight Back In 2007 William House was a 25 year old chef and avid BMX rider with plans to compete in the BMX World Championships. Then life as he knew it was changed forever when William was hit by a car while crossing a road in Southport. He became a paraplegic and his previous active life became just a memory. Then William’s partner and children left to Melbourne, and his youngest daughter was diagnosed with cancer of the blood. “I’ve recently been released from hospital again, but clots on my lungs and the cost of my treatment means I won’t be able to visit my family again any time soon,” he said. After hearing about William’s story, Andrew Barker, General Manager of Bartercard jumped at the opportunity to help William. He arranged the donation of white goods from their members including a replacement fridge, microwave, washing machine, dryer, other household furniture and a new laptop. “Bartercard is delighted to help William with what he needs to get
back to living a fulfilling and meaningful life with every chance of achievement,” said Mr Barker. “We hope the laptop will help William connect with his family through Skype and email. We’ve also arranged for William to complete a Webmaster Basic and Certificate IV Course giving him a qualification after 18 months to build websites for clients,” he said. Says William, “There are lots of other people in need so I really appreciate their support. It’s helped give me a new outlook on life and the motivation to get back into the community and make friends again. These are things I haven’t had the chance to do since I had my accident.” “I used to be a chef, so I’m hoping to get back into the kitchen again soon to help out where I can at a restaurant near my house.” “I work hard to remain positive and keep strong with a good attitude. It really helps just being around positive and happy people, like Andrew from Bartercard.”
Super Confusion 60,000 Gold Coaster could be affected According to recent research, one in three Australians aged between 50 and 64, or roughly 60,000 Gold Coasters, could not provide the correct definitions for standard superannuation terms. Women were also more likely than men to be confused by industry jargon. As pre-retirees, the lack of understanding amongst this age group is a warning sign that individuals are ill-prepared for retirement, and putting their financial security at risk. But rather than this demographic being unusually financially illiterate compared to others, what the research really shows is that the super industry has not only relied on jargon, rather than plain English to attempt to educate this age group. Suncorp general manager David Carter, challenged the industry to respond to the research with clearer information. “Our industry has a long way to go to demystify super and clearly explain the buzz words to the very people who need to understand them. These are smart people who could end up missing out across the board, but also on extra retirement savings.” Laughable if it wasn’t so serious Respondents to the research survey often had creative and even humorous definitions for key terms, for instance, commutation, ‘a
form of communism’ and ‘going from place to place’; preserved benefit, ‘what is left after the Government takes its cut’; and nonconcessional contribution, ‘another confusing term to come out of the US’. More than 42% of women surveyed had not heard of transition to retirement, compared to 35% of men, and almost 60% of women had not heard of the term nonconcessional contribution, compared to 47% of men. These results could also be interpreted to mean that the industry is not reaching their target audience and/or that the use of jargon means that people are tuning out. Definitions for key terms are: Commutation – the conversion of a pension or annuity entitlement into a lump sum. Preserved benefit – superannuation benefits which must be kept in super until retirement. Non-concessional contribution – contributions made to super from after-tax income.

Options For Fixing Scars
Sanctuary Cove Holiday Entertainment Makes Shopping Fun
by deb farnworth-wood Q. I have a small scar on my face and a larger scar on my arm. They’re both quite different in appearance. How can I get rid of them? A. If you’re tired of being told that scars ‘add character’ (only a pirate could have made that one up) then you’re ready to look at your removal options! Different types of scars need different types of treatment. There are four main types of scars: keloid (thick and raised from the skin), contracture scars (generally caused by burns), hypertrophic scars (similar to keloid scarring, but they do not extend past the injury site) and acne scars.
Christmas shopping with children generally falls into the ‘no-fun’ category, but if it has to happen, you might as well make it fun for all involved.
Thankfully there are a number of well-established treatments that can help to reduce the size and appearance of these scars, and these include: Fraxel Laser – this is considered the ‘gold star’ standard for removal of acne scars, and most of our patients experience excellent results. Laser surgery – vascular specific lasers may be used to lighten scars that are pink to purple in colour. Release of scar tissue – in some instances scar tissue may be able to be released from beneath the surface to allow the skin to bounce back to its usual position. This can provide significant improvement on its own, but the addition of dermal filler to raise any remaining indent may improve this further. Injections – with protruding scars such as keloids or hypertrophic scars, excellent results have been achieved with the use of cortisone injections which act to shrink the scars. Needling – small scars respond well to needling, also known as ‘dermal rolling’. A roller of small needles is passed over the area to create controlled damage, which allows nutrients to penetrate the skin and aid repair. Surgical scar removal – there are many options under this category, depending on your particular case, including skin grafts and excision. For a consultation on scar treatments for your particular situation, contact Australian Skin Clinics on 5509 0000. Send your cosmedic SOS Questions to deb@ozskin.com Deb Farnworth-Wood is the clinic owner of Australian Skin Clinics, and author of Step Away from the Mirror… I just want to kiss myself, the definitive guide to growing old beautifully.

Coast Events The Spectacle, The Excitement – The Rodeo! Australia’s top 90 rodeo stars will once again compete for Australian championships on the Gold Coast in January. The Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) National Finals Rodeo will be held indoors for the fifth consecutive year at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre over four huge days and nights from to January 20. The spectacular multi-million dollar event – Australia’s largest rodeo is the grand finale of the APRA season and sees the cowboys and cowgirls competing in six events – bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, team roping and bull riding. To get to the Coast arena, competitors have spent the past year travelling thousands of kilometers across the country to qualify at regional events – most recently the annual Warwick Rodeo. According to National Finals Rodeo coordinator John Osborne, that battle saw the cream of the crop turn up the heat for places at the Australian championships. “We’re at the business end of the season now, all competition points from here on in are vital and we’re certainly seeing that in the ever-increasing intensity the riders are showing in qualifying,” Mr Osborne said. “The national finals are a huge event in our sport, and we’re leaving no stone unturned to make January’s rodeo on the Gold Coast the best yet.”
“It’s a major Gold Coast event and, running alongside the Magic Millions, it positions the Gold Coast as the equine epicenter of the country for several days,” he said. Mr Osborne said the all-weather rodeo is quintessentially country, but indisputably Gold Coast in its presentation. “Gold Coasters love a spectacle and they love their sport. Everything’s covered with this event. There are the cowboys, cowgirls, the bucking stock, the bulls, the clowns and the barrels, and huge TV screens, great sound and top musical entertainment,” said Mr Osborne. “The famous over 18’s Cowboy Bar will return bigger and better than ever with nightly entertainment and our ticket prices are very family-friendly.” Adults tickets start at $19, children’s tickets at $12 and family tickets start at only $50. Three, four and five session passes and tickets are available now at www.nfrgoldcoast.com.au, www.ticketek.com or at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre ticket office.

How Not to be the Neighbour from Hell this Christmas
Happy Holidays from the team at Life Gold Coast!
According to a recent survey, 35% of Australians have said that due to financial pressures they won’t be going away this Christmas, but they added that they do intend to party – at home. Of course, what this so often means is noise, loud music, parking chaos, rubbish, and potential run-ins with your neighbours. Patsy Rowe, local author and Australia’s most popular etiquette commentator, has compiled this handy guide to partying at home and maintaining the peace in your neighbourhood at the same time. Patsy Rowe’s top tips for partying at home: 1. Tell your neighbours that you are having a party so they can ‘baton down the hatches’ and be ready for the noise. Or, better yet, invite your neighbours and have them join the fun! Of course, there are laws covering noise pollution after a certain hour and police can be called in, so keep it down before it gets to this point of no return. 2. If you’re enjoying karaoke, spare a thought for the neighbour’s listening to your fifth boozy rendition ‘Hey Big Spender’. Karaoke is best done inside if possible and not in the back garden. And if you’re on a house boat, remember that sound travels and homes

along the waterway will experience your singing as if it’s up close and personal! 3. Explain your home’s parking situation to your guests in advance and suggest they come by taxi or public transport if possible. Sort out where the best parking is for those who will come by private car, and ask your guests not to park across paths, neighbour’s driveways or in private parking bays in apartment complexes. 4. I f you live in an apartment building and will be using communal areas such as the pool or barbecue, make sure to thoroughly clean up your rubbish. There’s nothing like discarded beer bottles and plastic forks to get people’s noses out of joint. Enjoy, but remember when the guests leave you will still have to live next to your neighbours! Fashion News
House of Humility Concept Store Opens in Mermaid Beach Em and Jimmy L’Almont, the uber-talented husband and wife duo behind the Humility Couture label, have opened their first concept store in Mermaid Beach, House of Humility, featuring apparel, shoes and jewellery. Fresh from their return from the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, the pair decided to back themselves and realise their dream of creating a collection that not only features their label, but also hand-picked, exclusive pieces from Melbourne and Sydney designers. Says Jimmy, “We have been planning the launch of our retail concept store for the last three years, and we felt it was important to open where it all began for us. We love Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but our largest support base is right here.” Though initially Jimmy and Em had hoped to confirm a regular stockist on the Coast to build on the excellent feedback, online sales and general demand locally for their label, they expect their vision will thrive now under their own creative control. Of particular importance to the designers is creating their own displays of the collection themselves, and determine each item’s price point. “The concept store means we can also connect with
our customers and find out what they want, what they don’t like and get direct feedback on fabrics, prints and fits from the people who wear it. Em and I are convinced that it this will make us better at what we do, and more in-tune with what people want to wear,” says Jimmy. The pair also expect that House of Humility will push the boundaries of what ‘Gold Coast fashion’ is. “Its not uncommon for a surfer to come in and admire our collection, but say ‘it wouldn’t suit me’ and then after a change room session, have that same guy come away with half the collection and a great confidence in his new style.” House of Humility also actively supports the work of Gold Coast humanitarian aid organisation Effective Aid, which provides education and support to refugees fleeing war-torn Burma. Donations can be made in-store, and customers can even arrange to sponsor a child. House of Humility is located at 2573 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach www.houseofhumilitycom. For more information regarding Effective Aid visit www.effectiveaid.org.
Style tip: This Summer we are producing the bulk of our collection in Australia using an experimental Australian made modal fabric, which is extremely lightweight and organic and has an incredible silk sheen and feel to it. We recommend wearing this fabric slightly oversized to get the full drape effect of the fabric. Guys: Match this with our rolled up chino style print pants or denim paired with a pair of hand made soft brown or black leather shoes (all available at House of Humility). Ladies: venture over to the men’s rack and wear the asymmetrical cut singlets as a draping dress. Also, a pair of round or flat top sunnies and a unique necklace will round off this stylish summer look.

Top Ten Travel Sickness Tips for Your Family All around the Gold Coast, families will soon be jumping in the car, jet setting in planes and even cruising the seas to enjoy the holidays.
occurs. On a plane, move to the centre seats over the wings. On a boat get as close to sea level as possible.
But this can be fraught with anxiety if anyone in the family suffers from travel sickness. Here are 10 simple tips to help your family either avoid or minimise the effects of the dreaded travel tummy.
6. D rive smoothly. Less braking and swaying obviously reduces rapid shifts in movement.
Top 10 Tips 1. Focus on the horizon. Focussing on a distant point helps keep your eyes in sync with the vehicle’s motion. Avoid activities that keep attention inside the vehicle. For kids, play ‘I spy’ and other games that encourage them to look out the window and position baby-seats so children can look outside. 2. Up front and forward. Motion tends to be felt more in the back seat of a car, so move up front if possible.
7. E at well and re-hydrate. A settled stomach (though not one filled with greasy foods) is less susceptible to nausea. Keep dry biscuits, fruit, water or club soda handy. 8. S ee the signs. Tiredness, dizziness, nausea, sweating and loss of appetite are all signs of travel sickness. 9. Carry bags. Pre-moistened towelettes or a wet cloth will also come in handy. 10. E ase the quease with some ginger. Products like QueaseEase can help.
3. Plenty of fresh air. Fresh air helps so keep the windows down as much as possible but avoid strong smells. 4. Stop frequently. This helps restore a sense of balance and reduce that ‘swaying’ feeling. Take advantage of free playgrounds or work in a picnic or two at a park on the way. 5. Head to the middle. The middle of a vehicle is typically where the least amount of movement
