Note from the Editor.. Green is the colour and definitely the new “grey” and how exciting that is. As we start to use colour more freely in our homes green takes us towards nature and contentment and there are some beautiful wallpapers to choose from. It has been an exciting few months as we have worked on a number of projects with many more in the pipeline. The talented artist, Kerry Caffyn, has new art that we have brought to life as wallpaper, taking us underwater with fantastical creatures from the oceans, jellyfish, starfish, seahorses and my favourite the blue swordfish, which fits well with the trend we are seeing towards fish and all things below the waves. I love being in a wallpaper factory and being able to work with designer Claire Greenfield from Harlequin on an exclusive for us has been a joy. We went through archive designs, some older than others, and took our knowledge of colour trends and paint to create some stunning new wallpapers. Being in the factory to see them coming off the different machines has been magical – I hope you like them too. We have also welcomed a new brand “Ohpopsi” which has a joyous approach to walls with so much new design and colour. “Living life in colour” is certainly their mantra which we love. I am also enjoying having several new members to our team who are all young and massively excited by wallpaper. All our team undergo training on how to hang all types of wallpaper and the enthusiasm was infectious. Do continue to enjoy your decorating projects and we hope you will love the new collections we are launching. Subscribe for our emails from both Wallpaperdirect and Designerpaint to be the first to know what is happening in the interiors’ world. We love seeing your interiors’ projects so make sure to follow and tag us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and TikTok, @wallpaperdirect and @designerpaintuk to be kept up to date with the latest design looks and inspiration. Enjoy being creative!

Emperor Peony

Sanderson’s Water Garden a collection of wallpapers and fabric bringing romance to your home. This year’s Spring launch from Sanderson was a wonderful celebration of archive designs from the end of the 19th and early 20th century. A romantic period for English decoration, influenced heavily by the enduring resonance of Oriental styles: Japanism and a love of Indian and Chinese patterns reminiscent of those found in our nation’s ancestral homes remain popular, and now are appreciated further by a new and younger audience. In that period Oriental water gardens were hugely fashionable and landscaped into the grounds of many English country estates. Exuding tranquillity and calm, they represented the tastes of the time, brimming with new and exotic plants. Inspired by an extraordinary collection of documents in the Sanderson archive, Water Garden captures the enduring beauty of this decadent and captivating era.

4

Emperor Peony

Prominent to the story is the London wallpaper printer, Jeffrey & Co. (1836 to 1924). Best known for its association with several important Arts and Crafts figures, Jeffrey & Co.’s wallpapers of the time featured bold trailing patterns of highly stylised, oversized flowerheads, which burden the elegant turns of their coiling stems. Emperor Peony - In contrast to its blousy Victorian contemporaries, the Chinese inspired decorative style of this 1920’s Jeffrey & Co. archive design is adorned with large peonies and tropical butterflies. Lotus Leaf - An unusual interpretation of longstemmed lotus leaves reaching skyward, hand drawn by the Sanderson studio. Representing the delicate foliage found amongst traditional water garden ponds, gravure inks add to the design’s tonality and fluid hand and this copper colourway is indicative of the art deco period.

The Mediterranean joy of Coordonné Colourful folklore Coordonné have brought us in 2022 some beautiful new collections of wallpapers and murals. Two of the recent highlights are Feria and Enchanted. It is an irrefutable fact that flowers and nature bring joy to our lives! And editing wallpapers that surprise and delight is the principal aim of this Barcelona firm. Combining floral themes and Spanish traditions has been the central inspiration for Coordonné’s Feria range. Each year, there are a huge number of romerías and popular festivals in Spain, where people take to the streets under the hot sun, donning distinctive and traditional outfits. Flamenco dresses, shawls with playful fringes and women with flowers in their hair take centre stage over the days and weeks in towns and cities across this enchanting country. It is the perfect setting to inspire a timeless floral collection that will fill your home with a joyful folkloric look. Whilst their Enchanted collection is about immersing yourself in the world of the fable. Delicate, dream-like aesthetics with birds, flowers and breath-taking colours. Soft lines that recreate romantic scenes.

The creative pictorial process

Innovation and adaptability are the fundamental pillars of Coordonné.

Coordonné develops its collections using carefully compiled mood boards, often featuring outlines and sketches in pencil and charcoal and which, together with a close study of nature, come together with colour palettes inspired by the nature of the Mediterranean. For the Barcelona brand it is also vital to keep a close eye on what is happening in the fields of fashion, art and music in order to create collections which are cutting edge and progressive.

Coordonné’s path to sustainability Coordonné is committed to the sustainability of its wall coverings, using water-based inks, raw materials that respect our forests and low-consumption energy in the manufacturing process. It is the path that will lead us towards a better and more sustainable world.

The initial sketches and ideas are usually done on a large and medium scale using very diverse materials, including fabric, wood, plaster and even metal. This is to ensure innovation, a

Latest collection from

Jane Churchill Atmosphere VI wallpaper collection With an evening entertainment vibe that spans from laid back to vibrant, Jane Churchill is delighted to present their latest collection of wallcoverings; a natural continuation of the popular Atmosphere style. Sharing an inspiring palette that ranges from soft muted tones to jewel coloured riches and delicate metallic highlights which shimmer in a perfect marriage of understated glamour and Art Deco influences. The Atmosphere VI collection has an enticing blend of luxurious textured plains, small-scale geometrics and attractive decorative wallpapers, it includes a carefully curated selection of signature ‘Atmosphere’ looks. Exploring the relationship between light and shade, chalky grounds and mica shimmers, designs such as Snow Flower shares its lovely, relaxed aesthetic in contrast with the modernity of Fortunei’s spacious fan palm motif.

Harlequin collaboration

Diane Hill We were delighted to see this wonderful collaboration between Harlequin and Diane Hill.

From her London studio, Diane Hill’s meteoric rise in popularity has been far from surprising. With lockdown as its instigator, her talents and love of ancient Chinese design erupted across social media, catching the Harlequin team’s eye. Claire Greenfield, lead designer for Harlequin says, “Working with Diane’s unique and colourful hand was hugely exciting. Her artwork really captures the spirit of individuality, introducing a modern take to traditional chinoiserie influences. Owning the room with beautifully painted motifs, Diane encourages homeowners to bring out their personality, by creating a look that represents who they are.” During the 18th century, Europe’s desire for chinoiserie reached fever pitch, with exquisitely painted silks adorning the walls of high society homes. Exotic and alluring, they were the epitome of luxury and glamour. Utterly bespoke, original chinoiserie wallcoverings were, of course, highly regarded and hugely expensive. Diane continues, “I’m absolutely overjoyed to be able to share my design passions with the rest of the world. Chinoiserie is such a beautiful, elevated art form and something I’ve wanted to make more accessible for such a

long time. Harlequin has given me the independence to create a range of wallpapers and fabrics that brings out everything that’s been locked inside of me. It’s like an extension of who I am. This opportunity feels very vibrant and uplifting - it’s challenging the limits in terms of colour and style. It’s like creating chinoiserie in a way that’s never been seen before.” With designs named after pioneering and powerful women that blazed the trail for individuality, this collaboration encourages selfbelief and self-expression. Some of the highlights of the collection are featured here: Marie – feminine and floaty, Diane’s love for botanical painting shines through in this soft, gentle design. Named after Marie Curie, juicy pears and trailing vines, accented with delicate blossoms recreate a very English feel.
