In the end, people buy people.
That makes sharing our stories the most compelling way to connect with one another.
What’s needed is a platform to embrace and empower our regional business ecosystem. Where varied backgrounds and perspectives provide new context.
Harnessing potential, enabling growth.
And at the heart of it, a dedicated term of curators unlocking insights for the good of us all.
So we’re changing the way people think of connecting.
Because we believe in self-reflection, rather than self-promotion.
By demystifying the art of storytelling, we deliver authentic thought leadership through events, publishing and broadcast media.
We come together to discover, share and grow.
But we won’t be limited by geography, or our imagination.
Instead, we’ll seek out local leaders, visionaries and experts, wherever great businesses thrive.
Growing communities, in partnership with the businesses that power them.
And nurturing the enterpreneurial spirit in everyone.
SBTWelcome
Welcome to another edition of SBT
What is success? In its truest form, it isn’t a destination marked by a mind-boggling bank balance, a mansion or even a corner office. It’s a far more nuanced and personal journey - something created with threads of purpose and meaningful connection. Modern conceptions of success acknowledge this complexity, moving beyond traditional metrics to embrace a more holistic view.
Yes, success is reflected in business and personal milestones - but it is also about authenticity; how you align your actions with your values.
We look at what success really means in this month’s issue of the magazine. As well as celebrating business successes, we also acknowledge that, to many, success is all about living a life that reflects what truly matters. It might manifest in contributions to the community, pursuing a passion, or simply nurturing strong relationships.
Whether you currently realise this or not, success can be found in the every-day moments of living authentically, rather than chasing an elusive, externally defined ideal.
Growth is a key part of the equation. Are you constantly learning, evolving and pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone? Embracing challenges and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth is crucial. Success is not about avoiding failure, but about how you rise after each fall, armed with new knowledge and resilience.
Meaningful connections are the threads that bind us. Are you surrounded by people who lift you up, support your dreams and share your joys and sorrows? Building strong, genuine relationships is essential for a fulfilling life. True success often lies in the quality of your connections, not the quantity of your possessions.
The real meaning of success is deeply personal. It’s about defining what it means to you, not allowing society or others to dictate your path. It’s a continuous journey of self-discovery, growth and contribution, measured not by external validation, but by your own internal compass. It’s about finding joy and fulfillment in the process, not just the outcome.

Looking ahead: business trends for 2025
By Sussex Innovation.
As we stand at the start of another new year, 2025 looks set to be another year of transformative change. From political and economic upheaval around the world, to the widespread adoption of new technologies and the continuing push towards a more sustainable and equitable society – there are multiple interconnected trends that are sure to have long-lasting impact on how we do business.
Monthly News
Sussex Innovation’s in-house market research team have taken a look at some of these trends, drawing together insights from reports by Deloitte, CB
Insights, Mintel, Ibis, and industry experts, dissecting their forecasts and demystifying the implications for SMEs looking to grow and scale.
The global political and financial landscape
The economic trends shaping 2025 will be deeply influenced by geopolitics, inflation, migration flows, and policy decisions that will have a profound impact on global businesses and consumer behaviour.
The US economy remains robust, driven by technological innovation and strong consumer spending. However, rising interest rates – a tool to combat
persistent inflation – are likely to increase borrowing costs for businesses, potentially slowing investment growth.
Trump’s administration is expected to prioritise protectionist trade policies, likely reigniting tensions with China over tariffs and technology exports. For businesses in the UK and around the world, this could mean increased costs for goods reliant on Chinese components, particularly in sectors like electronics and automotive manufacturing.
Trump’s push for deregulation and tax cuts may boost US-based industries, but could create volatility in global financial markets. Consumer confidence
within the US is projected to remain divided - and in the UK, Trump’s policies are likely to impact exports and create uncertainties for SMEs involved in transatlantic trade.
The EU continues its slow recovery from the pandemic, with GDP growth projected at 1.3% in 2025. Energy independence remains a priority following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, pushing investments in renewable energy and reshoring critical industries.
Policies such as the European Green Deal and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are reshaping industries, compelling businesses to adopt greener operations and increase transparency. Although the UK is not a signatory to these regulations post-Brexit, the new environmental and sustainability norms
are likely to impact anyone intending to do business across EU borders.
Migration flows into the EU are reshaping labour markets, with industries like construction, healthcare and logistics benefiting from an influx of workers. However, political tensions surrounding immigration policies could create uneven labour distribution across member states.
Closer to home
The UK faces a unique blend of challenges and opportunities under the Labour government, which is prioritising health sector investment, sustainable infrastructure, and regulatory reforms to drive productivity and economic growth. Despite slow projected GDP growth in 2025, the government’s policies aim to address structural weaknesses while maintaining fiscal discipline.
The NHS remains a top priority, with the government pledging £8 billion in additional funding to reduce patient backlogs and improve staffing levels. This focus on healthcare modernisation is expected to boost medtech and healthtech opportunities, particularly for SMEs developing AI-powered diagnostic and patient management systems. However, questions remain about longterm funding sustainability and how easy it is to engage with procurement processes within the NHS.
Inflationary pressures are expected to ease throughout 2025, and while lower borrowing costs may support business investment, cautious consumer spending amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis will challenge B2C businesses to offer value-driven solutions.
The government’s proposed planning reforms aim to address housing shortages and boost residential investment. By easing restrictions on urban development, these changes
could gradually improve labour mobility and productivity. However, the long-term impact on GDP growth depends on effective implementation and alignment with environmental standards.
Emerging technologies
Generative AI and AI agents are predicted to continue their rapid development in 2025, reshaping industry sectors on a larger scale than anything seen since the arrival of the internet. However, even as AI becomes more ingrained into our everyday lives, much of the technology is still unproven and evolving faster than our ability to keep up with it, creating thorny issues for any SME planning to use it effectively and ethically.
Healthtech and medtech
Healthcare is one of the industries that has been earmarked for transformation by these emerging AI technologies –but there is still uncertainty over how it might be implemented within an organisation of the scale and complexity of the NHS. Nevertheless, global technology businesses are investing in transformative healthtech and medtech innovations that may become a reality sooner than we think.
Sustainability and social purpose
With energy independence and the transition from fossil fuels becoming an ever more pressing concern, incoming legislation is prompting all forward-thinking businesses to act on their net zero plans. It’s part of a wider pattern of “for-purpose” brands not only supporting social causes, but embracing them as the foundation of their identity and business model.
More detailed information on Data and AI, HealthTech, Sustainability and Social Purpose can be found in a longer version of these trend reports on the Sussex Innovation website.
Technology trends to embrace in 2025
As we step into 2025, businesses are navigating a dynamic landscape shaped by advancements in technology and evolving workplace demands. Leveraging the right tools and strategies is critical to stay competitive and efficient.

Trend to implement: Partner with IT managed services providers that offer 24/7 monitoring, disaster recovery, and tailored IT strategies. Outsourcing IT management allows organisations to focus on their core business operations and gives them the tools to help ensure their growth.
3. Advanced telecommunications for seamless connectivity
Telecommunications technology is at the heart of modern business operations. Reliable and scalable communication systems are essential for fostering collaboration and customer engagement.
Trend to implement: Invest in unified communications platforms that integrate voice, video, and messaging. Technologies like 5G and VoIP can improve speed, clarity, and connectivity for distributed teams.

Focus Foundation’s Winter Ball raises over £120k for local charities
An unforgettable night celebrating stage and screen, and the best of Sussex talent.
Focus Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Focus Group, has proudly announced the resounding success of its third annual Winter Ball, held on Saturday, February 1 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Brighton. This year’s highly-anticipated event surpassed all expectations, raising the astounding sum of over £120k - all in support of Sussex-based grassroots charities. The Winter Ball is Focus Foundation’s biggest annual fundraiser, bringing together businesses, supporters and charities
from across Sussex for a night that combines entertainment with a sense of purpose.
A night of magic inspired by stage and screen
Inspired by the world of stage and screen, the Winter Ball delighted guests with special performances from a choir, made up of performers from local charities, followed by four talented Sussex Superstars finalists, with the evening finishing with an energetic set by Symphonic Ibiza that had everyone dancing the night away.
Show-stopping highlights
• Guest speakers: Glenys Creese, CEO of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, took to the stage alongside parent Kate Ogden to share heartfelt insights into the critical role that funding plays in supporting grassroots charities. Adding to the evening’s inspiration, 2024 Paralympic table tennis medallists Bly Twomey and Will Bayley captivated the audience with their powerful and motivating stories, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
• Sussex Superstars Grand Finale: The event featured the thrilling conclusion
of the Sussex Superstars competition.
Talented local performers showcased their skills before an esteemed panel of celebrity judges, including patron Anita Dobson, actor and TV personality Chrisopher Biggins and singer, dancer and choreographer Jacquie Brunjes, culminating in a live crowning of the competition’s winner - Ellen Zhang, a talented 15-year-old violinist who performed the iconic theme tune from Schindler’s List. Ellen received £500 cash prize and a paid festival contract for summer 2025 as curated by E3 Events.
• Charity auction and raffle: Guests enthusiastically participated in the night’s auctions and prize draw, bidding on exclusive prizes and unique experiences. The proceeds from these activities played a significant role in achieving the remarkable fundraising total.
Supporting local communities
Dan Slatter, CEO of Fareshare Sussex & Surrey, shared his experience of the night, saying: “Not only did our table have a fun filled, fantastic evening but left feeling inspired by Focus Foundation’s vision to support regular charities like us. It was also so encouraging to see some wonderful organisations making a huge difference to people’s lives with the other featured charities.”
Half of the funds raised will directly benefit five Sussex-based grassroots charities, including Bramber Bakehouse, Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC), Esteem, Fareshare Sussex & Surrey, and Team Domenica. These organisations are dedicated to supporting underprivileged children, advancing mental health initiatives and fostering community development across the region. The remaining 50% will be allocated to support a multitude of charities that have sought Focus Foundation’s assistance.
Commenting on the night’s success, Chris Goodman, Co-Founder and Trustee of Focus Foundation, said: “Our Winter Ball is more than just a night of entertainment for our guests, it’s a celebration of community, resilience, and the incredible power of coming together for a greater cause. These vital funds will allow the beneficiaries we support to continue to thrive in what is a challenging time for grassroots charities, proving that we are incredible, together.”
Katie Gibson, Relationship Manager for Focus Foundation, said “It was my first year working with the team and speaking at the event with our Junior Ambassador Ben Macleod and I couldn’t have been prouder of what we’ve been
able to achieve. We gained a host of new supporters and are looking forward to collaborating with businesses to bring their CSR targets to fruition.”
Headline sponsor for this year’s event was Giacom with supporting sponsors Gamma, Greve & Son, Houlihan Lokey, Invictus Wealth Management, Travel Counsellors, Watson Associates, and event partner E3 Events.
Outside of the annual events and individual efforts, Focus Foundation 500 ensures access to regular funding, enabling the Foundation to respond quickly to grant requests, completing assessments and delivering funding in a timely fashion. The cost of joining the club aimed at businesses is a monthly donation of £100, which will help to change the lives of over 100 people every year.* Contact info@focusfoundation. org.uk for more information.
*This is based on £30,000 of grants that Foundation has issued and the impact assessments showing that the beneficiaries will number over 2500 people

In 2013 my world fell apart when a failed IVF journey led to divorce and disrupted my social circle. While my friends were all embracing parenthood together, I felt isolated, out of pace and out of place. To help me process my grief I started sharing my story on Instagram through @nottheblueprint, openly discussing infertility, divorce and mental health. This vulnerability became my strength, driving me to qualify as a coach to guide others from grief to growth.
Then, during the 2021 lockdown, I created Connected Brighton, a social events business designed to help people connect by supporting local businesses. Now we have a Social Club, Business Club for preferred suppliers and we work with hotels on guest experiences too. Fulfilling my mission to put money back into the city, and help people feel seen, heard and special by supporting ‘local’.
Today, as well as growing Connected into other cities, I am using my entrepreneur experience to empower other business owners through my Coaching and Mentoring Mastermind groups, helping brands to embrace their authentic selves to grow businesses that they love too.
What has been your biggest business challenge to date?
The biggest challenge for me was to tell my story so openly, and to be so vulnerable. The fear of judgement, the fear of isolation, the fear of being the odd one out. I never planned to tell my
story when I started Connected, but it quickly became what people wanted to know. And telling it has been the rocket fuel to my success.
What has been your greatest or proudest business achievement to date?
Every award has made me so proud, making the 2024 Top 100 Inspiring Female Entrepreneurs in the UK was the cherry on top. Being at the House of Lords with the other women, and feeling like I’d really made it and that the hard work to get here was worth it.

Through Connected, I help people over 35 make new friends in our Social Club. Our Business Club supports local businesses looking for new audiences. Our Concierge service supports hotels and, in my Coaching and Mentoring, I help other personal brands find the confidence to grow. How do you define success?
Success for me comes in so many forms - the privilege of seeing the impact my business has made on other people, the difference I see in myself because of it. Changes coming to UK company size thresholds: what are they and will they impact your business?
By Kristina Perry, Partner, Carpenter Box.
The UK government has revised the thresholds that determine the size of a company or group of companies. These changes will impact many businesses regarding their financial reporting and statutory audit requirements.
Finance
What are company size thresholds and what are the changes?
Company size thresholds are benchmarks used to classify companies and groups as small, medium, or large.
These classifications determine financial reporting and statutory audit requirements. Effective from April 2025, the thresholds (turnover, gross assets and number of employees) have been increased to take into account inflation and economic growth. These changes
size thresholds
mean that some companies currently classified as medium-sized may now fall under the small category, and similarly, some large companies may be reclassified as medium-sized.
What are the new thresholds?
The following new company size thresholds will be effective for financial periods beginning on or after the 6 April 2025:
*Gross assets is the total of fixed assets and current assets.
A ‘two-year rule’ applies when determining size. This means that a company only ceases to be small (or medium) once it has breached at least two of the above limits for two consecutive reporting periods. There are transitional provisions included in the new legislation that will allow for the new
limits to be applied for the comparative period to ensure that the ‘two-year rule’ still applies in substance.
A group of companies can use the above thresholds to determine size when the results of the group are aggregated, and inter-company
Gross size thresholds
What will the impact of the revised thresholds be?
The government estimates that the new regulations will result in:
• 6,000 large companies being reclassified as medium-sized to access more proportionate reporting.
• 14,000 medium-sized companies falling into the small companies’ regime, potentially benefitting from audit exemption and filing simpler accounts.
• 113,000 small companies falling into the micro-entities’ regime to allow them to prepare simpler accounts.
The revised thresholds will:
• Reduce the financial reporting requirements of a number of companies and groups in terms of financial statement disclosures.
• Reduce the number of companies and groups that will be required to have statutory audits as size has a direct impact on audit obligations. This may place greater responsibility on directors and management to ensure financial transparency if an audit is no longer performed.
Changes to Directors’ Report requirements
In addition, the new regulations also remove several obsolete or overlapping requirements relating to the contents of the Directors’ Report. Large and medium-sized entities are no longer required to include information on:
• financial instruments;
• important events that have occurred since the end of the financial year;
• likely future developments;
• research and development;
• branches outside the UK;
• the employment of disabled people (this requirement is also being removed for small entities);
• engagement with employees; and
• engagement with customers and suppliers.
Steps to take now
To prepare for these changes, businesses should:
• Assess whether the revised thresholds will change their size classification.
• Inform stakeholders of the changes and outline the steps being taken to maintain transparency and accountability.
• Consult with their accountants and auditors (where applicable) to ensure a smooth transition when the new thresholds come into effect.
transactions are eliminated. Alternatively, ‘gross’ limits can be applied when intercompany transactions are not eliminated to determine group size. It is also possible to use a mixture of the gross and net limits.
The gross thresholds are as follows:
Need further guidance?
The upcoming changes to UK company size thresholds mark a significant shift in the regulatory landscape. While the revisions aim to reduce compliance burdens for smaller businesses, they also demand a proactive approach to financial management and governance.
At Carpenter Box we can provide support in determining the statutory size of a company or group. If you have any questions, please get in touch with a member of our accounts or audit team by calling 01903 234094 or visit www.carpenterbox.com

Spend Nothing on Saving Money…
two
steps:
Your business and personal circumstances are unique. No-one else is quite like you. To the onlooker, your motivation and needs might look just like someone else’s, yet there will always be differences.
And whatever you do, or whatever service you provide, the strategy you take depends on your own choices.
You may be looking to expand, consolidate, diversify or even make a graceful exit. Each of these options presents a different challenge but all have one thing in common, which is that money, cashflow or funding of some description will be required.
For example, you may have spotted an opportunity to sell a product in a new market or location - but how will you
fund the necessary stock, purchase the raw materials, or find space to store it all?
You may have an opportunity to take on a new contract which will require additional staff and machinery, but will take time to pay for itself - where will the money come from?
Or, perhaps you are fed-up with renting and wish to own your own premiseshow do you go about achieving that?
Whatever you want to achieve, I can say that there will be a way of financing the project in a way that works for you, not just the lender. In fact, it is in every lender’s interest to offer finance in a way that works for the clientthey want to do business in this way because it is less risky for them. The trick is to find the solution that is best for your unique circumstances.
At Seico we have been finding the solution, and the right lender, for over 30 years, for business and personal customers alike.
The best answer to your question (whatever it may be) might surprise you - so why not get in touch with me at Seico and we can explore your options.

The changing leasehold landscape
By Jo Ironside, Partner
(Leasehold Enfranchisement) at Mayo Wynne Baxter.
Reforming leasehold law has been on the political agenda for the best part of the last decade and the Law Commission made numerous recommendations for change back in 2020. Many of the recommendations were reflected in the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 which was passed last year but is not yet in effect. The recommendations include:
Legal
1. Reducing the price and costs payable to the landlord where a leaseholder exercises their right to extend their lease or purchase the freehold.
The Act seeks to reduce the costs payable by a leaseholder in various ways including:
• Changing the way that the premiums are calculated including the removal of marriage value.
• No longer enabling landlords to recover their costs from the leaseholder – each party will bear their own costs in the transaction.
2. Enabling flat owners to buy the freehold of mixed use premises or take over its management where up to 50% of the building is commercial space rather than the current limit of 25%.
This will mean that more buildings will be eligible for enfranchisement where perhaps landlords had not anticipated that they would be.
3. Increasing the number of years
granted by lease extensions to 990 years with no ground rent payable, in place of shorter extensions of 90 or 50 years under the current law.
Leaseholders will therefore only have to go through the process of extending once rather than numerous times over the life of the lease.
4. Rationalising where disputes are heard so that they are determined by a tribunal rather than a court.
This is a welcome change. It is well known amongst property practitioners that a case that is referred to the Property Tribunal for adjudication will be dealt with more effectively then if it ends up in the County Court. This is for a number of reasons but not least because
the panel of judges at the tribunal likely have a wealth of property experience and so understand the issues at hand easily and also because the tribunal appears to have less of a backlog of cases to be dealt with.
5. Creating a new right for leaseholders with long leases to ‘buy out’ the ground rent under their lease rather than having to resort to a lease extension.
Currently, leaseholders do not have a right to alter the ground rents in their lease even where they are deemed onerous by lenders and buyers. If the landlord will not agree to alter them then their only recourse is to exercise their right to a statutory lease extension even where they don’t need additional years as this brings their ground rent down to a peppercorn. This mechanism should provide a less expensive means to resolving a rent issue for leaseholders.
6. Removing the rule that requires two years of ownership before exercising your right to a lease extension.
This rule was brought in at the end of January 2025 and whilst removing this arbitrary hindrance to leaseholders demonstrates the government is proceeding with its planned reforms.
Further reforms
In the King’s Speech 2024 the government committed to publish a further draft Leasehold and Commonhold Reform Bill which would:
• Enact further Law Commission recommendations to strengthen leaseholders rights to extend their lease, buy the freehold and manage their building
• Reinvigorate commonhold as an alternative to leasehold
• Regulate ground rents
• Remove forfeiture as a remedy for defaulting on the terms of the lease
• Grant the rights of freehold homeowners where their houses are situated on estates
The government have said that they will be consulting in 2025 on:
• options to restrict the sale of new leasehold flats and converting existing leaseholds to commonhold
• the regulation of property managing agents
• service charges and legal costs
• Valuation rates used to calculate the cost of enfranchisement premiums
With this commitment to further reforms the landscape of leasehold law appears to be an evolving one.
What does this mean for leaseholders and landlords?
For the time being – lots of uncertainty!
Leaseholders will no doubt be relieved that long overdue changes appear to be in the pipeline but landlords in turn will likely feel persecuted by legislation intended to diminish their investments with many choosing to divest themselves of their assets now before the landscape turns further against them.
Seven judicial review claims have been made challenging the provisions of the Act on the basis that they are contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights and amount to an expropriation of the value of the landowner’s property without any or adequate compensation. The outcome of the claims are yet to be determined partly because it is hard to assess the impact of the legislation without the secondary legislation that enacts it being available for review.
Having said all that, the general advice to those who need a lease extension or want to buy their freehold:
• If your lease length is down to 80-82 years – it is almost certainly advisable to extend. There is no guarantee that it will be cheaper in the future for you to extend.
• If you need to remortgage or move and the lease term is an issue – extend.
• If your lease has over 82 years – might be worth waiting as the cost could actually go up for you in future rather than reduce.
• If your ground rent is above 0.1% of your property value or rises that high –consider waiting for the legislation as such ground rents might be capped
• If your lease is under 80 years – wait if you can as the abolition of marriage value is likely to benefit you.
If you need specialist advice to guide you through this changing landscape – do get in touch with our leasehold enfranchisement team who will be able to help.

Recent changes to family employment rights
By Alex Jones, Managing Director of 365 Employment Law.
There are a number of changes affecting maternity and paternity employment rights which are due to come into force on 6th April 2025.
Basic rights from day one
The Employment Rights Bill introduces basic employment rights from the first day on a new job, including parental and bereavement leave, paternity leave and protection against unfair dismissal.
Increased protection against redundancy
Employees taking certain types of
parental leave, including maternity leave, now have protection from redundancy for at least 18 months. This protection starts when the employer is notified of the pregnancy and continues until 18 months after the child’s birth.
Flexible working requests
The right to make a flexible working request is already a ‘day one’ right for employees. There are however two key changes in the new Bill:
• An employer can only refuse a flexible working request if it is reasonable for them to do so.
• An employer must state the ground for refusal and explain why it is reasonable
to refuse the request on those grounds. They must also respond to these requests within two months.
Carer’s leave
Employees are entitled to take one week of unpaid leave per year if they have caring responsibilities for a spouse, civil partner, child, parent, or dependent. This leave can now be taken from the first day of employment with no qualifying period.
Health and safety
Employers are required to assess the potential risks to pregnant employees and their babies. If any risks are found, employers must take reasonable steps
to remove them. If risks cannot be eliminated, the employer should offer suitable alternative work or suspend the employee on full pay.
Neonatal care leave and pay in the UK
Parents of babies in neonatal care will be entitled to 12 weeks of paid leave, on top of any existing leave they may be entitled to, such as maternity or paternity leave from day one of their employment. To be eligible parents must have a baby admitted to neonatal care within 28 days of birth who has a continuous stay in hospital of seven days or more. Statutory Neonatal Care Pay will be available to those who meet continuity of service and minimum earnings requirements.
To qualify an employee must be employed for a minimum of 26 weeks prior to the leave being requested and be earning an average of at least £123 a week. This
mirrors the entitlement to maternity pay. The leave must also be taken in the first 68 weeks of the baby’s birth. Parents taking neonatal care leave will have the same employment protections as those associated with other forms of familyrelated leave which will include protection from dismissal or detriment as a result of having taken or applied for the leave. When neonatal care leave comes into force, employers should introduce a policy reflecting the new statutory rights, to make their staff aware of them.
Parental leave
The Bill introduces a significant change to statutory parental leave, which currently requires employees to have completed one year of continuous service. The new legislation makes parental leave a day one right, allowing employees immediate access to up to 18 weeks’ unpaid leave per child up to the child’s 18th birthday.
Paternity leave and bereavement
The Paternity Leave (Bereavement) Act 2024 will eliminate the requirement for fathers and partners to have worked for at least 26 weeks before being eligible to
take paternity leave where the mother, or an individual with whom a child is placed or expected to be placed for adoption, has died in the first year after birth or adoption. The government has not said when they expect this new right to take effect, and again further regulations will be needed.
Maternity and statutory family leave protection
The Bill looks to strengthen protections for pregnant employees and those on or returning from maternity and statutory family leave. Under existing legislation, pregnant employees and those on maternity leave (and other statutory family leave) have a degree of protection from dismissal on the grounds of redundancy. This protection does not amount to a bar on dismissing employees who are pregnant, or on family leave; instead, they have a priority right to a suitable alternative vacancy, where one exists.
The government plans to expand this protection, although this will be done through secondary legislation. The Next Steps paper that accompanied the Bill indicates the government proposes to make it unlawful to dismiss pregnant employees or those returning from maternity or other statutory family leave within six months of their return, except in specific limited circumstances.

Webtrends Optimize - leading technology in the Conversion Rate Optimisation industry
The world of technology is an ever-changing landscape, and Webtrends Optimize has continued to make significant steps forward in the market since their separation from Webtrends Inc. in 2018.
Over the last nine months, Webtrends Optimize has embarked on a project to redesign their UI. This new UI, known as wto7, is due to go live to all users on February 20.
Cover Story
Below, CEO Matt Smith and the delivery
team, including fellow board members Matt Goodchild (IT Director) and Sandeep Shah (Product Director), plus Hannah Hamment (Designer), Kevin Satti (Lead Project Developer), James Harber (Director of Customer Success), and more, explain why this project began, what this means for the future of Webtrends Optimize, and how their clients and partners will benefit from it.
Why was the decision made to deliver this new version of the Webtrends Optimize UI (wto7)?
Our existing UI was six years old before the changes came into place, as we delivered that immediately postseparation from Webtrends Inc., so it was due an overhaul. More and more enhancements and features have been
added in that time, and the feedback was that it had become a little less intuitive for clients and partners to use, and a sticking point when coming to some renewals and sales.
As we are a SaaS (Software as a Service) company, we appreciated the importance of listening to our users and addressing this, to make the UI not only more user friendly, but actually enjoyable to use. It was a unanimous business decision that we should prioritise the redesign to ensure a more seamless and efficient experience.
What are the main benefits of wto7both internally and externally?
The main benefits are a faster and more
intuitive UI. It will be easier to navigate for clients, easier to share tests with their colleagues and, importantly, easier to find features to help them on their testing journey.
This sort of technology is notoriously complex, but we have made it very simple to navigate and use. It’s also important for us to practice what we preach; we support businesses to make their websites more user-friendly and so re-establishing our own platform usability was key.
The new design shortens the time to value when new clients are onboarding, as the learning curve to understand and use the technology will be a lot shorter. Faster workflows will allow the
customers to spend less time on the platform, meaning that they have time to create and manage more experiences to make positive changes to their site.
We have also focused on updating the accessibility of the product, so users with vision loss or colour vision deficiency will be able to use the product more easily. This will also help all users navigate and use the product, as it will be much clearer for all.
It will also be easier for our in-house team and our many valued partners. The code is a lot more straightforward, meaning development teams can better utilise their time elsewhere. Consulting teams will benefit from greater tools, including a new dashboard that brings
important things to the forefront of the product. Streamlining this will improve the usability and experience for everyone involved.
Through an extensive beta programme that was open to all existing clients and partners, and was adopted by a sample group of 100-150 high volume users, we’ve continued to listen, and iterate. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
overall performance of it. The purpose wasn’t to add more features, but a positive outcome was clients and partners rediscovering existing features and now utilising these more.
The new dashboard is a lot more intuitive and has a much more modern look and feel. The way it is now presented has removed things that people don’t need to see. The new dashboard will also allow users
“ The changes have made my day-to-day job a lot easier. There are some really nice aspects in the redesign that just make sense. They look better, they work better. I still have access to all of the detailed reporting I need to make trusted, informed decisions, but I can now also share data and reports with the wider business and say, ‘this is what’s happened with the tests’.
“I always have a much clearer idea of everything that is happening with each experiment, just by glancing at the screen. I am very impressed with the redesign as it makes things easier for the entire optimisation team.”
John Mills, Community Fibre
What are the specific changes that have been made?
It’s less about specific changes and more about the whole experience when using the product and improving the
to understand at a glance if there is anything that needs their attention when entering the platform.
Users can expect to see an improved performance too, as now it is just one
piece of technology. We have removed any unnecessary code and streamlined the whole platform, so it will be quicker (and gives time back to development teams to use elsewhere).
Reporting, which is a key area for our users, has been simplified and is a lot easier to understand. We have removed anything that users have told us they don’t need to see, and the overall presentation is a lot more coherent. The new design has taken away any hurdles of understanding the platform.
Jake Lambert, Head of Optimisation at Sussex based Customer Experience
Digital Marketing agency, Fresh Egg, said “The changes have made everything so much clearer, and it makes so much more sense. It’s been a massive improvement and is really intuitive. Both my team and our clients can notice the difference in the ease of use, and how easy it is to interpret. All the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”
What have been the biggest challenges throughout this process?
The biggest challenge has been balancing priorities from a project management perspective. It’s been
important to keep the bigger picture in mind. We wanted to make sure we kept serving our current clients and partners and ensuring they still get all the support they need, whilst committing to a big project that also required a lot of time and resources.
Our goal from the start was to keep the functionality of the existing platform so that users can still do all they do at the moment, whilst enhancing all areas wherever we can. There were also the usual technical challenges which you face with these projects. But solving them and fixing any bugs now is definitely better for everyone in the long run!
Despite some of the difficulties, this project has been the right thing to do for everyone. We have successfully stuck to our deadlines (and sometimes exceeded them!), put our clients at the forefront of everything we do, and have
improved the experience of our product both internally and externally.
When we exit beta and launch to our whole client base, we will be able to judge even more the impact of the redesign, but already the changes are looking extremely positive.
What is the next delivery users can expect to see?
The next phase of the redesign will be launching in April, and our team is working on even more changes and improvements until then. The main thing that users of the platform can expect to see is an improvement in the process of creating and editing tests.
We have been working on improving the WYSIWYG Visual Editor, which can be seen in the experiences section of the new UI. This new design will work as a plugin on the client’s own website, with
a focus on logically grouping different functionality together, speeding up processes and workflows.
WYSIWYG means What You See Is What You Get and that is what we have tried to encompass. Users will be able to easily click, edit, drag, change things on their website, ensuring a more accessible platform for all. These changes will make testing significantly easier, making it more straightforward for clients with less development resources to collaborate with the rest of their team, and share projects that are being worked on.
Users can expect to see a streamlined and unified workflow, which will be much slicker than the existing one and more aligned with modern browsers, so all of our clients and partners can utilise our technology and wide range of features to their full extent.
Our updated Advanced Coding Editor will incorporate extra features that developers have told us they desire from their coding editors, such as dark mode, highlighting code, as well as pulling all of the coding areas of the platform into one place.
“
intuitive, user-friendly UI, means customers get a whole package with Webtrends Optimize.
Based on the feedback we had received about the previous design, our main goal was to ensure our clients and partners
The changes to the Webtrends Optimize UI have been excellent. It’s a really efficient way to work as everything is in one place. It has really helped the whole team to be able to collaborate and be on the same page with our CRO programme and we’re looking forward to the next phase too!”
Lisa
Hogan, Sussex Cricket
How does wto7 now compare to your competitors?
Feedback received consistently from valued partners and experienced businesses in the CRO space told us that from a capabilities and features (and commercial model) perspective we were already comparable to anyone else in the market. The UI changes delivered in wto7 now address the one area in which users told us wanted to see improvement.
Our full capabilities and features are a lot more obvious, and clients can get results with our technology that they can’t get elsewhere. We have always been praised for our support and flexibility, this alongside our new
enjoyed using the platform again. We feel we have created something that our clients and partners want and importantly, that they understand.
The initial feedback from the beta programme seems to confirm this, but we will continue to have bi-annual feedback loop sessions with users of the platform, so this high standard is maintained.
What does this mean for the future of Webtrends Optimize?
The redesign is an important step for Webtrends Optimize as it reaffirms our position as the best in class when it comes to the technology. When we were at the research stage, we identified that our competitors had
easier to use UIs, now we can compete with this and prove to our clients and prospective customers that we have all the tools they need to improve website performance and optimisation.
We will continue to evolve and improve the user experience as time goes on. As we iterate, we want to ensure it conforms with the core principles and continues to be easy to use for our clients and partners.
As a SaaS vendor, we want to be available for everyone. We already have options that mean customers can license and scale accordingly. So, it is key to deliver a technology that meets the expectations at all levels. The new design is more appealing and easier to use, so already we are able to position this to existing clients and prospective clients.
Taking on an internal project of this magnitude sets the standard for future changes. We have redesigned our core offering and taken a risk in spreading our resources. But seeing the work everyone has done, the positive feedback from everyone that has seen it, and the already improved results for clients, proves it’s worth.

Benefit-in-kind tax changes for double cab pick-ups: what you need to know
Brace yourself, because tax talk is about to get (almost) exciting! Big changes are on the horizon for double cab pick-ups in the UK.
From April 2025, these workhorses of the road will no longer be classed as commercial vehicles for tax purposes.
Instead, they’ll be taxed as cars, significantly increasing Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) liabilities for businesses and employees alike. However, there’s still
time to act and lock in the current, lower tax rates.
If you’re considering a new pick-up, there’s no better time to make your move – and the brand-new MAXUS T60 MAX could be the perfect choice.
The BIK reclassification: what’s changing?
Historically, double cab pick-ups have been treated as vans for tax purposes, meaning they benefited from a fixedrate, low BIK tax regime.
However, under the revised rules coming into effect from April 6, 2025, these vehicles will be taxed as cars.
This means that instead of paying a fixed low rate, drivers will be taxed based on CO² emissions and list price – a change that could see costs rise dramatically.
Why act before April 2025?
There is a crucial window of opportunity for businesses and individuals who order, lease, or purchase a double cab pick-up before 31st March 2025.
Vehicles secured before this deadline will continue to be taxed as vans until at least April 2029, or until they are sold or the lease ends.
This means four more years of lower tax rates, avoiding the costly hike that will hit post-April 2025 purchases.
How this impacts employers and employees
Employees: Higher Income Tax
For those who drive a companyprovided double cab pick-up, the BIK reclassification could lead to thousands of pounds in additional tax liabilities each year.
For higher-rate taxpayers, the difference is substantial, making it essential to secure a vehicle before the deadline.
Employers: increased National Insurance contributions (NICs)
With BIK values increasing, employers will face higher NICs for each double cab pick-up classified as a car.
This will also impact capital allowances, reducing the overall tax efficiency of these vehicles.
Companies that rely on double cab pickups for operations should plan ahead to avoid financial strain.
The future of double cab pick-ups
This reclassification is part of the government’s broader push to encourage lower-emission vehicles.
While electric alternatives are on the rise, sometimes you just need a proper pick-up to get the job done. That’s why acting fast is key to locking in the best financial deal while you still can.
Meet the MAXUS T60 MAX: your perfect pre-deadline pick-up
If you’re in the market for a new double cab pick-up before the tax changes kick in, the MAXUS T60 MAX is an outstanding option. Don’t miss out on competitive contract hire and finance lease options available.
This pick-up combines power, practicality, and enough tech to make even your most gadget-obsessed mate jealous.
Key features of the MAXUS T60 MAX:
• 2.0L twin-turbo diesel engine – 500Nm of torque, giving you the strength to tackle the toughest jobs.
• 8-speed automatic transmission and 4WD – Perfect for handling both off-road adventures and demanding work environments.
• 1,050kg payload and 3,500kg towing capacity – Carry more, tow more, and get the job done with ease.
• Comprehensive warranty and roadside assistance – Includes a 5-year/100,000 miles vehicle warranty and 24/7 roadside assistance across the UK and Europe.
• Fuel efficiency and emissions –9.1L/100km (WLTP) fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 239g/km.
Order now and beat the tax hike
With deliveries available from Spring 2025, securing a MAXUS T60 MAX now ensures you lock in the lower BIK tax rates and avoid any financial nastiness down the line.
The clock is ticking. If you want to keep more of your hard-earned cash, act now. The new tax regime is coming whether we like it or not, but you can at least beat it at its own game.

Brighton, Gatwick and now Eastbourne
Mike Monk Events expands its stable of one-day business shows and announces new partnerships.
Networking & Events
It all started with Brighton & Hove Business Show… Heading towards its fourth year at the Amex Stadium in 2025, the one-day event has been such a success it spawned the inaugural Gatwick Business Show. Held in partnership with Gatwick Diamond Business in October, that event is set to return next year too - after ticking all the right networking boxes for attendees.
But that’s not all. Mike Monk Events has now partnered with Brilliant Businesses and Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce to announce a third business show for 2025 - in Eastbourne. Eastbourne Business Show will be staged at The Kings Centre on Wednesday, September 10. The headline sponsor has been confirmed as Lightning Fibre.
For Mike Monk, it’s all about bringing events closer to business communities so that they can easily access them and benefit from what they have to offer - from unlimited all-day networking to valuable seminars and workshops. It is also about listening to feedback and making changes that will improve events year-on-year.
“Eastbourne is a place many of my exhibitors want to explore - not just for growth but network building,” said Mike. “Together with Brilliant
Businesses and Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce, I think we can deliver an event that people will not just benefit from but enjoy.”
Behind the scenes, Mike has been tweaking Brighton & Hove Business Show to ensure it offers an improved experience year-on-year.
He said: “I’m not just talking about ensuring the sandwiches don’t run out by lunchtime! It’s important to properly link the two exhibition lounges so that footfall is equal. That’s why I have worked with the team at the Amex to create an entirely new space that will bring the lounges together.
“In terms of Gatwick, the show will be back next year because of popular demand. The feedback has been brilliant, and Gatwick Diamond Business is again my partner for this event.”
Brighton & Hove Business Show will take place on Thursday, June 5. Gatwick Business Show will return to the Crowne Plaza Felbridge on Thursday, October 16.
Visitor registrations will open nearer the time.
Stand bookings for all three shows have opened and are expected to sell out quickly. To aid those looking to exhibit, Mike’s website team has added ‘live’ floor plans to the website so that anyone interested in booking a stand can see which ones have already sold.

Redefining success: lessons from the forest
What does success mean to you?
Networking & Events
For many, success is a ceaseless pursuit — a horizon that keeps shifting further away. But what if we slowed down, paused our chasing and found success not in grand accomplishments but in the quiet, meaningful moments?
The outdoors offers this perspective. It doesn’t judge. Whether you strike a spark without kindling a full fire or carve a spoon that’s rough around the edges, the forest sees no failure. It simply nurtures us, accepting every effort equally and knows that you can come back and try again.
This idea struck me deeply after listening to Sam’s 100th episode of the Different Hats Podcast. Sam touched on a profound truth — success blooms all around us if only we stop long enough to notice it. And there’s perhaps no better place to become present in these daily miracles than outdoors, surrounded by the unhurried wisdom of nature.
The forest’s quiet lessons
The forest offers a unique kind of freedom — one where traditional measures of success fade away.
It’s a space where the usual pressures
to perform and compete don’t apply, allowing both individuals and teams to step back and reassess what truly matters. Here, success isn’t defined by meeting rigid expectations but by the intrinsic value of the experience itself.
For teams, this shift in perspective can be transformative. Instead of focusing solely on outcomes, they learn to appreciate the process — collaborating, problem-solving and rediscovering genuine connection.
Perhaps it’s asking: What does collective success look like? A groundbreaking project? A smooth
presentation? Or could it be as simple as reconnecting with each other, building trust and sharing ideas more freely from a creative block?
At Adventurist Collective, we believe the forest offers teams the perfect space to redefine success, on their own terms.
Stop, slow down and connect
Modern workplaces often operate at a breakneck pace, leaving little room to breathe, much less to reflect. Creativity stalls. Communication falters. Spirits dim. Yet we’ve seen how stepping outside — literally — can change everything.
Our forest sessions aren’t just about team-building; they’re about hitting the reset button. They offer a chance to stop, slow down and truly be. Be with nature. Be present with your team. Be open to the world around you.
It’s simple, yet transformative. Picture this: Your team gathers under a canopy of trees. The pressure of deadlines fades. Together, you attempt to build a fire — some sparks catch, some don’t.
You laugh, you try again, you learn from each other. Suddenly, everyone is working as a unit. Problemsolving feels fluid. Barriers crumble. You haven’t just built a fire; you’ve reignited ‘connection’. You’ve built your community. And maybe you’ve roasted a marshmallow.
We see it quite simply.
Creativity blocked? Get outside.
Trouble communicating? Get outside.
Feeling meh? Get outside.
Success blooms in the present
This was the final note on Sam’s latest episode - success blooms all around us.
No one leaves the forest unchanged. We’ve learned that happiness and success don’t live on some distant horizon — they’re here, waiting to be embraced in ordinary moments.
Nature has always been our greatest teacher, reminding us that success
is just as much in the trying as it is in the achieving.
With the Adventurist Collective, we don’t just bring teams outside; we bring them back to themselves. We help businesses find success not in relentless striving, but in creating space for joy, growth, and connection to bloom every day.
Don’t delay your happiness-or your team’s.
Stop. Slow down. Get outside. Success is waiting, and it’s closer than you think.

100th episode celebration: a night of reflection, gratitude, and a new vision of success
By Sam Thomas, Founder of the Different Hats
podcast.
Networking & Events
On Monday, February 3 I hosted a private screening of the 100th episode of my podcast and it felt like stepping into a realm of pure magic — an evening where gratitude flowed as freely as the stories, and an overwhelming sense of possibility rippled through the crowd. It was the day after my 46th birthday, and I couldn’t have asked for a more precious gift than everyone’s time and presence on a chilly February night. Every moment was infused with warmth and purpose, reminding me why I started this journey in the first place: to help the world see success differently.
I’ve always been fascinated — and a bit bothered — by the way ‘success’ is traditionally defined. Crack open a dictionary and you’ll see something along the lines of: “The attainment of wealth, fame, or social status.” This limited view can become a destructive force. Nearly 60 percent of all suicides are linked to financial or economic pressures, and 75 percent of those who take their own lives are men. In the UK alone, 84 men die by suicide each week. These are heartbreaking statistics that point to a society weighed down by rigid expectations — where your worth is measured by your bank balance or your job title, and anything less is deemed failure.
Standing in front of everyone that evening, sharing the episode, I felt an urgent need to open our collective eyes to a broader, kinder way of measuring success. Imagine a world where we celebrate authenticity, connection,
generosity, and love as benchmarks of achievement. Where success is not just about how much you earn, but how deeply you’ve loved, how bravely you’ve lived, and how compassionately you’ve helped others. The conversations in that room, the energy that filled every corner, made me believe that we can turn this vision into reality if we’re willing to champion it together.
The Q&A after the screening captured so many of these themes. A huge thank you to Lyndsey Clay for hosting and guiding our discussion with wisdom and warmth, and to the wonderful voices like Robert Starr, Emma Draper, Gary Peters, and Gavin Willis who chimed in with insight and encouragement. Their words reminded me that we’re not just passively watching a podcast; we’re cocreators of a movement that asks: How do you define success?
For everyone who joined me, whether in person or in spirit, I want to say how deeply grateful I am. The team that helped make the 100th episode
possible deserves a standing ovation. Thank you to our creative minds — Jamarl, Billy, Kevan Smith, and the visionary camerawork of Howie McConnell for capturing the soul of the night in the video. Huge appreciation goes out to Gareth and Mary Kemp for their contributions behind the scenes. And to Lisa Clayton and the entire Iron Works Studio team — your venue and hospitality made this event shine.
This journey wouldn’t be what it is without our incredible sponsors. Gavin Willis and the Search Seven team, your headlining sponsorship truly elevated the evening. Thank you to Nostos Hove, Plus X Innovation and Rivervale for believing in this podcast’s purpose. I also want to recognize Martin Leppard and H2 Productions Limited for their tireless commitment to producing each episode with excellence and heart. And to George from Zero to Sixty Creative for our brilliant new website, plus BranDad Bill Wallsgrove for our brand identity, and Terry Bower from Inside
Stories for coining the ‘Different Hats’ name that has come to represent so many layers of this adventure.
Since that night, one of the most meaningful moments for me was hearing people talk about how the episode challenged their personal definition of success. That is exactly what this mission is all about. If, after watching or listening, you found yourself questioning old narratives — maybe reflecting on your relationships, passions, or those small pockets of joy — then I know we’re on the right track. The power lies in sharing. So I invite you to write down your definition of success, share it with a friend, post it online, or send it to me. Every time we speak our truth, we push back against a society that tries to measure us by numbers or titles.
The website for the podcast is now live, and I encourage everyone to explore it,
subscribe to the newsletter and follow the YouTube channel. Together, we can amplify stories that break free from limiting labels. We can champion people who have found fulfilment in ways that may not fit the classic checklist but offer far deeper satisfaction.
As I woke up the following morning, my heart was practically overflowing. The 100th episode event wasn’t just a milestone — it felt like a new beginning. You have all given me the confidence to push forward, to keep asking the hard questions, to keep sharing honest conversations about life’s wins and challenges. We have the power to rewrite the story of success, to turn it into something inclusive, compassionate and reflective of our true selves.
This is only the start of the journey. In the coming weeks and months, I’ll be bringing on more guests to share their
unvarnished paths, each one a different lens through which we can see success. I hope you’ll walk alongside me, staying curious and open, ready to be inspired and to inspire others in return.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to each and every person who has been part of this mission so far. Let’s continue this quest — together — to help the world see success differently. And if this event has sparked any new insights for you, please reach out and share. After all, real success flourishes in community, where we lift each other up and embrace the beauty of our shared humanity.

Becoming confident on camera
An interview with Kevan Smith, of Epiphany Content.
Networking & Events
When executives and founders sit down with Kevan Smith, they often share one of their biggest fears: “I hate being filmed. I hate making videos.” From his Brighton-based Epiphany Content Ltd., Kevan helps hesitant executives show up confidently and authentically on camera.
He’s equal parts coach and director, with roots at the London Film Academy. And his work is based on a simple truth — the most effective videos mix real personality with strategic planning. These days, he shows C-suite executives and company founders how to shine on camera by being themselves.
“People think they need to be perfect,” Kevan says. “But it’s not about being perfect. It’s about sharing ideas that your best clients will find interesting.”
His approach is both considerate and engaging. Rather than pushing clients into stiff, over-rehearsed performances, he collaborates with them to develop scripts and topics that feel natural. “My clients’ content should feel like they’re having a conversation with a friend. And my job is to highlight their strengths throughout the process.”
The Epiphany Squared process
During his sessions, Kevan uses his Epiphany Squared process to guide
clients through four essential phases:
1. Managing camera anxiety - He coaches clients on overcoming the natural tension that surfaces when facing recording equipment.
2. Building clear messages - Working closely together, Kevan helps uncover content topics and develops a content strategy that reflects genuine expertise.
3. Natural recording sessions - The filming process is all about finding the client’s comfort zone. Preparation and structure are the foundation for showcasing confident authority.
4. Content scheduling - Clients can
focus on the relationship-building part of their business while Kevan handles the scheduling of their content. A recent client, who leads a successful accounting firm in Kent, noted: “Working with Kevan put me at ease from start to finish. His approach brought out my best, and the resulting videos matched my company perfectly.”
The methodology
His method centers on finding middle ground. He treats scripts as flexible guides rather than fixed rules, creating room for genuine self-expression. “Strong content blends thorough planning with personality,” he says. “While scripts give direction, your genuine personality is what creates that true connection.”
From his seaside base in Brighton, Kevan’s work is all about connection and relationship building. His clients create videos that spark real interest and tell meaningful stories while capturing their message beautifully and authentically.
Avoiding common video mistakes
He steers executives away from common video mistakes. “People tend to chase vanity metrics and online validation,” Kevan shares. “But the people you actually want to do business with are just looking for connection. They want to know who you are. They want to know what you stand for. And they want to
know that they can trust what you say.”
He goes on to say, “In my work, it’s all about building that ‘Know, Like, Trust’ bond. And nothing solidifies that bond like sharing what you know in an authentic, helpful voice. The key is in focusing on sharing content that will help your audience in some way. Whether that’s helping them feel connected, sharing something they’ll find interesting or beautiful, or giving your knowledge freely and helping them in their everyday lives, relationshipbuilding has to be at the focus of the content that you create and share.”
Advice for video newcomers
For those new to video, Kevan shares straightforward advice: “Everyone has what it takes to make effective videos that they will be proud of. You just have to find the approach that works best for you. And my work is all about helping you find that approach.”
Beyond the content: ‘Brighton United’
His work extends beyond individual coaching. Through the growing community he founded, ‘Brighton United’, his work is all about connection and shared understanding. And whether it’s members of the community or business leaders, his vision centres on helping others amplify their voice as a way of finding alignment and genuine connection.
Kevan’s background and vision
Kevan’s background shapes his methods. His shift from years working on film and television sets through to coaching CEOs and founders on sharing their message, he’s found a unique method that combines technical know-how with a knack for bringing out authenticity and passion in his clients. He knows the tests of building recognition while staying true. And his approach helps leaders build their message on a foundation of their values and the ‘why’ of the work they do.
“Even as you grow, your core message will continue to resonate with your audience,” he says. “And when your content reflects core values that your audience can trace, that helps you build trust and a voice of credibility.”
Ready to share your story?
Ready to become more visible by building an online presence that you’re proud of? Kevan Smith of Epiphany Content is ready to help. Don’t let doubt stop you. Your message matters, and proper guidance will help you share it well.

Networking & Events
Rok Skool Sound Strategies recently hosted a remarkable conference called The Performance Playbook: Lessons from Music & Sport which featured an inspirational lineup of speakers, including Paul Barber OBE, CEO and Deputy Chair of Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Tony Underwood, former England Rugby International. The day was an inspiring collection of stories, performances and lessons.
Leading with love
Tony Underwood, former England Rugby player and Emirates pilot, explained how he is now helping organisations unlock impactful social value strategies. He shared moving stories from his careers which highlighted how, for him, leading with love, care and kindness fostered high performance on the pitch and in the cockpit. Former chief sports writer
for the Guardian and Daily Telegraph, Paul Hayward enjoyed a ‘fireside chat’ with Tony about the highs and lows of his career as an England Lion, including thriving under the Lions’ Laws and that infamous encounter with Jonah Lomu.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s 25 steps to high performance
Paul Barber OBE revealed the inner workings of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s extraordinary community integration. With 25 core pillars driving their success, he emphasised the importance of aligning culture with strategy and staying non-negotiable on values. His stories of community engagement and innovation were a masterclass in leadership and impact. He shared the Club’s exciting plans to build brand new bespoke facilities for the women’s team in line with their huge success and growth. He also outlined how the club engaged its people,
understanding that everyone plays a vitally important role, from the car park attendant who welcomes the referee on match day to the kit man. When Paul Hayward, who now hosts The Official Brighton and Hove Albion Podcast, sat down with Paul for a Q&A he described him as an ‘utterly unflappable leader’ who was happy to answer any question. The audience had many!
Racing against the odds: a legacy for women’s motorsport
Catherine Bond Muir shared her bold vision of creating the W Series, the first women’s motorsport championship. Her journey highlighted the grit it took to bring her vision to life and the heartbreak of seeing it halted by external forces. Yet, her legacy is undeniable, as the sport now stands on her shoulders, and she has opened doors for the current and future generations of women in motorsport.
The Rok School team of Mike Rebeiro, Sarah Harrison, Rory Kaye, and Gav Cantrell discussed how and why diversity, inclusion and community are core to Rok Skool’s mission, sharing how if your policies and behaviours are inclusive then diversity will follow. Rory described building on his late father’s legacy of values and how important the Hereward Kaye Scholarship (which funds individuals and charities’ access to Rok Skool tuition and events) is key to keeping the founder’s dream alive.
RezaRoks: music for wellbeing
Hannah Carter and her classical music charity, Ensemble Reza, demonstrated the healing power of creativity. Their movement, centred on the belief that music is essential for health and wellbeing, brought to light the need for STEAM education (including an A for Arts) to tackle the growing mental health crisis among children. She shared how Rok Skool and Ensemble Reza professional musicians are collaborating as RezaRoks to perform well-known rock and classical hits at a fundraising
Not out: managing mental health crisis for high performance
Simon Cusden, a former professional cricketer who played against Shane Warne during his short-lived career, gave a raw and courageous account of facing his darkest moments of alcoholism and a suicide attempt. He spoke about turning to recovery as an act of strength, using action to overcome anxiety, and finding meaning in rewriting his story.
Championing authentic voices
Rok Skool’s Chandni moved us all with her journey to discover her authentic voice. Her story of growing up in a Gujarati home was a reminder of the transformative power of staying true to herself and finding the right environment and people to springboard her talent. She shared how finding the right team led to her writing and releasing her first single, Eye to Eye.
Breaking through
JatzDaKid, an irrepressible force
of nature, showcased his ability to pivot creatively and explore new paths. His energy and talent were infectious, a beacon of hope for the next generation of creators. He is a leading rap artist and clothing label entrepreneur, who shared his story of overcoming challenges and grabbing every opportunity.

Rhea Steele captivated us with her stunning performance of a Billie Eilish song alongside other live music performances by the Rok Skool team.

What’s it like on Planet Hope?
Did you know that the world is full of joy?
Networking & Events
That’s right, the world is full of joy. Despite the daily headlines, the world we live in is full of positivity, goodness and abundance.
I know, it can be hard to see, through the fire and flames of conflict, backwards politics and enraging economics. But it is there. There are people building beautiful things, there are swelling movements of positive activism and change, and there are places full of blossoming nature and revival.
It is essential for the easing and energising of our souls to see this good, to feel it in our hands and to become a part of change. So, if I told you there was a place in Brighton where you can do exactly this, to say NO to doom and gloom, and say HELLO and I AM HERE to joy and goodness, would you come?
Of course, you would.
This place is called Planet Hope, and it is the latest instalment of radically transformative events produced by TEDxBrighton. Taking place on Friday, April 4, at the Brighton Dome.
Following the success of last year’s TEDxBrighton event, Got Your Attention, and then the whirlwind that was TED: Ideas Change Everything in December, the TEDxBrighton team has not rested since, in order to bring you more of the powerful and poetic inspiration you need to go out into the world and make your mark.
This year at TEDxBrighton: Planet Hope, you can expect stories that will remind you of what is truly possible when people believe in making the world a better place.
The speaker line-up includes locals such as Sam Zindel, MD of PropellerNet and instigator of Generation Restoration; Kevan Smith, a formidable storyteller and the man
who has sparked the Brighton United movement; and George Dowell MBE, owner of Worthing FC. Then, from further afield: Jenna Rhodes-Tiwana, a lunar strategist for iSpace (she literally puts things on the moon); Annabella Woghiren, a fierce and empowering activist; and Busayo Twins, a young and highly celebrated political commentator.
It is a big line-up, with a lot of power and positivity.
Curator and director of TEDxBrighton, Toby Moore, shared with us: “Every year, we try to capture the spirit of the city as it is right here, right now. This year, we have done this but with a mirror of hope, reflecting back all the good and all the power we have to make the world a better place.”

Navigating emerging trade and compliance challenges: key updates for 2025
By Ana Christie, CEO of Sussex Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber News
In an increasingly globalised economy, businesses must stay informed about regulatory changes to maintain compliance and competitive advantage.
1. Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a policy designed to address climate change by ensuring that imported goods face a carbon price similar to domestic products. Its primary goal is to prevent carbon leakage, which occurs
when companies relocate production to countries with weaker climate policies to avoid stricter regulations.
CBAM in simple terms:
• What it does: Adds a fee or tariff on imports of carbon-intensive goods (like steel, cement, and aluminium) based on the amount of carbon emissions produced during their manufacturing.
• Why it exists: To create a level playing field for industries in countries with strong carbon reduction policies and encourage other countries to adopt greener practices.
• Who it affects: Importers of certain goods into regions that implement CBAM, like the European Union (EU), and possibly the UK in the future.
Measure your business’s readiness for EU CBAM compliance
Welcome to ChamberCustoms’ free, interactive Health Check Tool. This tool is designed to help UK exporters understand their level of preparedness for the EU’s CBAM, ensuring you meet the compliance requirements for carbon emissions reporting when trading with the EU. https://www.chambercustoms. co.uk/cbam-health-check-tool
2. Border Target Operating Model (BTOM)
The UK’s Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) is a significant overhaul of postBrexit customs and border processes. It focuses on balancing trade facilitation with robust security controls.
Key features:
• Streamlined controls: Introduction of risk-based inspections to replace the blanket checks previously in place.
• Digitisation: Greater reliance on digital systems for declarations and documentation, aiming for seamless trade operations.
• Phased rollout: Businesses should anticipate gradual changes throughout 2025 as the model matures.
Impact on businesses:
• Adapt processes: Ensure systems
and teams are ready for updated documentation and inspection requirements.
• Training: Equip staff with knowledge of BTOM processes, particularly in logistics and compliance roles.
• Leverage opportunities: Businesses that adapt quickly may benefit from reduced delays and increased efficiency.
3. New rules for Northern Ireland (NI) trade
Post-Brexit arrangements continue to evolve, with new safety and security declaration requirements and rules for business-to-business parcel movements to NI coming into effect.
Safety and security declarations:
• Businesses must submit detailed information on goods entering NI, ensuring compliance with both UK and EU standards.
• These declarations aim to enhance traceability and maintain safety while minimising risks of non-compliance.
Parcel movements:
• New rules streamline business-tobusiness parcel shipments, requiring accurate data on origin, destination and content.
• Trusted Trader Schemes may allow for reduced administrative burdens for eligible businesses.
What to do:
• Update systems: Integrate updated requirements into shipping software and logistics workflows.
• Engage with authorities: Work with customs authorities to clarify requirements and ensure timely compliance.
• Communicate with partners: Ensure
suppliers and carriers understand their responsibilities under the new rules.
4. General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR)
The General Product Safety Regulation came into force on 13 December 2024 and places new responsibilities on British companies exporting to the EU, European Economic Area (EEA) and Northern Ireland (NI).
The legislation places new requirements on certain, but not all, goods exporters in Great Britain to the EU, the EEA and NI.
The General Product Safety Regulation was proposed by the European Commission to address safety concerns over products entering the EU. It is designed to deal with goods sold via online marketplaces or other distance sale means which were non-compliant with EU safety standards and risked harm to consumers. A precautionary principle runs throughout the new obligations and processes introduced by the Regulation, alongside strong traceability of products. Life through a lens
If you’ve dined at some of Brighton & Hove’s most exciting restaurants, chances are you’ve been drawn in by the captivating food photography by Xavier Buendia.
An award-winning, internationally published photographer, Xavi has spent the last decade establishing himself as a leading creative force in the food, beverage and hospitality industry.
Lifestyle
Originally from Mexico City, Xavi’s journey has been anything but conventional. A decade-long career as a sommelier took him across the Mediterranean, New York and the UK, deepening his understanding of food and drink before he pivoted to photography.
At 30, seeking a creative reset, he enrolled at university to study photography. His persistence and vision quickly set him apart, leading to collaborations with renowned chefs such as Monica Galetti, Tom Aikens and Douglas McMaster. Teaching photography in London and working internationally soon followed.
During the pandemic, Xavi expanded his practice beyond food, earning an MA in documentary photography. His work evolved to explore the human potential, capturing physical, intellectual, and emotional depth through portraiture, documentary, architecture, and personal branding photography. His ability to strip away stereotypes and present subjects authentically has attracted diverse clients, from Connected Brighton to PEBE, and The Launchpad Collective Xavi mostly works with independent businesses and enjoys the challenge of creating powerful visuals that help small businesses grow.
In January 2025, Xavi returned to his food roots but this time as Creative Director, launching Viva La Vida Creative, a collective dedicated to elevating food culture through storytelling and collaboration. Unlike a traditional agency, Viva La Vida Creative brings together independent food and drinks brands, matching them with highly skilled freelancers and offering a dynamic problem-solving approach.
“I wanted to create something that celebrated food culture in a meaningful way,” Xavi explains. “Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do – helping brands tell their stories through photography, film, social
The collective has already made an impact, working with Ben Walton of On a Plate Growth and Bloody Bens on The Bloody Good Guide to Bloody Marys in Brighton, as well as supporting The Gingerman in its transition to a neighbourhood restaurant model. New community partnership announced between Brighton’s cultural and transport sectors
Travel Smart, Travel Safe programme launched for Year 6 primary
school students.
Lifestyle
As a dedicated arts and heritage charity established in 2020, Brighton & Hove Museums preserves the city’s iconic buildings, curates worldclass exhibitions, and delivers vital community and schools’ programmes.
It has announced the launch of the Travel Smart, Travel Safe programme, a partnership between Brighton & Hove Museums and Brighton & Hove Buses to provide a completely unique educational experience for schools.
This new, free initiative combines an educational workshop to build confidence in bus travel for all Year 6 primary school students. It provides a memorable visit to the iconic Royal Pavilion or Brighton Museum & Art
Gallery, offering schools in the Brighton & Hove area an exceptional opportunity to enrich their students’ learning experiences. Brighton & Hove Buses are also generously providing free bus travel from the school to the Travel Hub on North Street, Brighton Museum or the Royal Pavilion and back to the school.
The workshop, designed specifically for young people following feedback from local ambassador teachers, provides crucial guidance for young people on how to travel safely and with confidence by bus across the city. The session includes short films acted and narrated by young people from Downs Junior School along with lively discussions on journey planning, waiting at bus stops, boarding, and travelling by bus.
Year 6 is the time when most young people move to larger schools that may be further away from home and require bus travel. This vital support in building their confidence can really help and lead to more independent and safer travel for other times too such as meeting up with friends in town and attending after school activities.
The trip includes a free educational experience at Brighton Museum or the Royal Pavilion where students will complete educational worksheets as they walk around these cultural institutions to help inspire their curiosity about the city’s rich heritage and collections.
This exciting new partnership between Brighton & Hove Museums and Brighton & Hove Buses and Metrobus
exemplifies both organisations’ commitment to education, sustainability and community engagement.
Hedley Swain, CEO of Brighton & Hove Museums, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Brighton & Hove Buses on this innovative programme to support young people at such a critical stage in their development.
“By combining an engaging workshop on travel confidence with the unique educational experiences offered at the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museum, we’re helping to equip Year 6 students with essential life skills while inspiring their curiosity about the city’s rich heritage. It’s a collaboration that not only fosters independence and safety but also connects our young people more deeply to their community.”
Ed Wills, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Buses, said: “As a major transport provider in the city we support children, students, parents, and guardians in getting to school, college, and university safely every day. We want to provide young people with excellent skills in travel planning and effective journey management so they can travel safely and with confidence to enjoy a fully connected life.”

Unlost Dens - an inspiring journey into the energising world of working in nature
The Sussex Business Times interviews Kim Slade.
Lifestyle
What is Unlost Dens and where did the idea come from?
Unlost Dens are workspace cabins in nature, designed for founders, writers, coaches, and creatives. The idea came from my own dream of having a perfect office or studio in the middle of nature.
I found that when I was on walks outdoors or working in an inspiring place, I had much more clarity, felt more creative and was energised to do great work. But when I returned to town — to a grey office or an uninspiring workspace — it drained my creativity and energy.
I always imagined having a beautiful, secret cabin in the woods where I could do my best work. A few years ago, especially with the rise of flexible working and remote setups during COVID, I realised many others likely shared this dream. That’s
when I decided to turn the vision into reality and build the first Unlost Den.
Do you have more than one cabin?
Yes! Right now, we have two cabins, but the vision is to create a whole network of spaces in nature where founders and creatives can bring their work outdoors.
This could include private spaces like the ones we have now, but we’re also planning to add meeting spaces, wellness areas and collaborative spaces in the future.
Where are you located? Where can people find these cabins?
The first two cabins are just on the edge of Brighton, near the Downs, close to Ditchling and Pyecombe.
Are there plans for more locations?
Yes, that’s the vision! We want to create a network of spaces across the country and even beyond. The goal is to have a single membership that connects a community of founders and creatives who love nature and find inspiration in these environments.
You’ve mentioned creatives a lot. Obviously, the space is designed with them in mind. But beyond creatives and founders, who else is it for?
It’s for anyone building something. That could be writers — many people have written books in the dens — or entrepreneurs using the space for strategic planning.
When I say “creative”, I don’t just mean artists. The design of the space, the connection to nature — it all enhances creativity in many forms. It could be problem-solving in a business, strategic meetings for startup founders, or coaches working with clients in a
distraction-free environment.
We’ve had people recording podcasts, editing videos, brainstorming new projects, and mapping out big ideas in these spaces. It’s about having a clear, focused and inspiring setting for deep work.
Why a work space in nature? What do you think the benefits are?
There’s actually a lot of scientific research showing that being around green spaces and open views activates different neural networks in the brain. This stimulates creativity and improves problem-solving.
Beyond that, having a dedicated space without distractions allows people to focus better and be more productive.
It’s a mix of using nature to boost creativity and having a private space to work deeply without interruptions.
“Implementation intentions increase the likelihood of following through on your goal by up to 91%”
- British Journal of Health Psychology
“When you are in nature, you engage your default mode network, which is your creativity network,”
- David Strayer, Cognitive Psychologist
So, in summary, what’s the most important thing about Unlost Dens?
The biggest thing is that when people go there, they feel closest to nature. Everyone knows that being in green spaces makes
you feel calmer. It has a massive impact on your nervous system and overall wellbeing. That’s what makes it so powerful.
“I wrote my new book there, use it to record my podcast and it helps me get into the flow.”
- Simon Batchelor, Founder, Author
“A wider field of view activates the frontal cortex, boosting strategic thinking”
-American Assoc. for Physician Leadership

What’s really happening in the world of DEI right now?
Thoughts from the BOXLESS team.
While a huge focus has been placed on the US and statements concerning steps backward in diversity, equity and inclusion, we believe the UK is full of opportunity. We want to encourage Sussex Businesses to use this opportunity to demonstrate their values and support those feeling even further marginalised.
Every year is an opportunity to change and 2025 will certainly be that. But what does that mean? The only way to truly understand what that means, how that
looks, or how you (yes you) can lead with this and be the change you want to see, is to ask yourself are we part of the problem or part of the solution? There’s an opportunity for business leaders to implement intentional initiatives that align with their core values, to shape a better future for the UK economy, environment and society as a whole. Bud was a recent guest speaker and panelist at The Gatwick Diamond Business’s Re-energise Conference, where he delivered an inspiring talk on change. A big question he asked himself on his journey toward social activism and the inspiration behind BOXLESS was,
‘If
not me, who? And if not now, when?’
This resonated with many in the room, as often, we look to others to lead the way but change starts with us. We need to hold ourselves accountable to challenge the norm and be aware of our privilege to build a more accessible, fair and inclusive path and make room for others to reach new heights.
The few major corporations that have scaled back or put an immediate end to their DEI programmes, are not just making a business decisionthey’re sending a clear message that reverberates and is felt (heartbreakingly so) in communities worldwide.
Companies with strong DEI practices are 36% more likely to have aboveaverage profitability. This is just one example of the real advantages of prioritising DEI and the direct impact on the success (or demise) of your business.
DEI is not a tick-boxing exercise (it’s literally why we have championed the term and brand, BOXLESS). It’s about fundamental, strategic improvements that touch on everything - from how your employees feel walking through the door each morning to how your customers perceive your brand, and ultimately, how sustainable your business is for the future.
We’re seeing something exciting happen. Many UK companies are waking up to the fact that their professional reputation and employer brand are intrinsically linked to their Social and Environmental commitments and responsibilities. When 76% of job seekers are looking at your diversity credentials before deciding to join your team, it becomes less of a statistic and a real call for change.
Last month, we hosted our first invite only, DEI Leaders event from Projects in Brighton. We brought together passionate social activists, forward-thinking business leaders, and DEI champions who are actually doing the work. The energy in that room confirmed what we’ve always believed: Sussex businesses are ready to be the leaders in DEI and we want to take you on that journey.
The year of change
At BOXLESS We have Three core pillars, People, Planet and Purpose
Aligning Social & Environmental objectives to your core business goals speaks of a true understanding about the role and opportunity for your business. If not now, then when will you prioritise these objectives? If not you, then who in your organisation are you waiting for? Why not make this year, your year of change?
Unboxing…
If you’re reading this and feeling fired up about making real change, we want to hear from you. We’re hosting our next exclusive DEI Leaders event in Brighton on March 13th, and we’re looking for leaders who are serious about shaping a better future.
These sessions provide the playground for sharing, networking, venting and problem solving. Neither Social or Environmental responsibilities can be achieved by one person in your business, it takes a village!
In these sessions great minds reflect on some the key themes impacting DEI, including;
• The business case to ensure best practice DEI in today’s economic climate.
• How UK businesses can lead global workplace inclusion.
• Strategic approaches to embedding DEI in organisational culture.
• The connection between DEI, ESG, and business performance.

I recently took my family for lunch at The Inn on the Square, and it was an exceptional experience. The kitchen has recently been taken over by the award-winning Nostos, and their influence is evident in every dish, offering a traditional Sunday roast but also a selection of their Greek specials.
Lifestyle
We started with the famous feta nests. If you have never had one, you are missing out. They are a delightful starter, perfectly crispy with a gooey feta middle. The delicate crunch of the pastry combined with the creamy feta created an unforgettable start to our
meal. For our main courses, we chose the lamb shank and beef, accompanied by incredibly cheesy cauliflower cheese. The lamb was outstanding — so tender it effortlessly fell off the bone, with a rich, hearty flavour that was complemented by a deliciously rich gravy. The beef was equally delicious, cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavour. The cauliflower cheese was super cheesy, with a creamy texture and golden crust that complemented the mains beautifully.
The staff were fantastic, providing friendly, attentive and knowledgeable service. They were quick to offer recommendations and ensured our needs were met throughout the meal, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Additionally, The Inn on the Square offers a private function room suitable for both private and corporate events, all catered by Nostos. This ensures that any gathering, up to 40, is accompanied by the same high-quality food and impeccable service.
If you’re in the area, I highly recommend giving The Inn on the Square a try. With its delicious food, excellent service and great event space, it’s a dining experience not to be missed. Whether you’re looking for a family meal, a romantic dinner or a venue for your next event, The Inn on the Square delivers on all fronts.

County Business Clubs’ Wine of the Month February 2025
Louis Pommery NV English Sparkling Wine
Madame Pommery was the first Champagne producer to make a Brut-style wine in the year 1874 rather than the sweeter original Champagne that was popular at that time. Over the years the brand has become a renowned high-quality producer and is one of my favourites, making a different variation of Champagne to reflect the different seasons.
In recent years Champagne has become more challenging to produce, whereas the South of England has now become the best place to produce sparkling wine grapes that regularly beat all comers.
Spotting this trend, Pommery set up its own 100 acre vineyard in Hampshire and launched Louis Pommery Brut which combines the sophisticated techniques of Champagne making with the unique terroir of the South of England.
The bubbles are fine and persistent, lingering in the glass and offering a continuous stream of sparkle, a hallmark of quality sparkling wine.
In the glass, the wine has a pale golden hue and is almost translucent.
The nose is fresh and inviting, offering an array of citrus notes of green apple, lemon zest, and a touch of lime which reflect the vibrant acidity of the wine. Beneath the citrus, there are delicate hints of brioche and toasted almonds, subtle indicators of its time spent on lees, which add depth and complexity.
Tasting notes
On the palate, the wine is crisp and refreshing, with a precise balance of fruit and acidity. The green apple and lemon notes from the nose are mirrored on the palate, but they evolve, becoming more nuanced with a slight minerality and a touch of white peach. The mouthfeel is bright and lively, with the fine bubbles providing a velvety texture. There is a pleasant richness typical of champagne which is derived from its lees aging which is well balanced.
The finish is long and clean, leaving behind a delicate, slightly saline note that hints at the maritime influence of the vineyard’s location.
Overall, Louis Pommery
English Sparkling Wine is a refined and sophisticated sparkling wine that showcases the potential of English grapes with the tradition of Pommery Champagne House.
It’s ideal for special occasions or as an aperitif, but also versatile enough to pair with a variety of dishes ranging from seafood to creamy cheeses. With its elegance, bright acidity and creamy texture, it offers an experience that rivals some of the best Champagne, making it a must-try for those eager to explore the exciting world of English sparkling wines.
