Essence Collection 1838 Wallcoverings We caught up with James Watson, MD of 1838 Wallcoverings, to take a look behind the scenes in their Lancashire factory at the printing of Essence, the new 1838 Collection launched at the end of January. James explains, “Our family factory is in Lancashire, where the first wallpaper machine was invented in 1838, and that’s the reason behind our brand name. We are world experts at a heritage printing technique called surface printing. It creates a beautiful hand painted look, like you’ll see on the Purity design. But we’re also experts at digital printing and love constantly innovating to create gorgeous new wallcovering effects. It’s this wonderful mix of craftsmanship, quality, heritage and innovation that characterises 1838.”
The new Essence Collection has been designed to allow us to take refuge in the serene beauty of nature by crafting a soothing, restful aesthetic. Designs with ethereal watercolour leaves, cascading flowers and translucent seed pods sit alongside organic crystal and mineral formations to celebrate the patterns found in nature. This beautiful collection of new designs explores the intrinsic qualities of the natural world and its balancing effect on us to create living spaces that nourish the body and mind. Colour tones and hues taken from the earth, forests and oceans bring a deeper connection to nature and a feeling of well-being. The collection includes two luxurious, special effect wallcoverings; Purity real cork and Essence hemp grasscloth, truly embracing the beauty and
authenticity of organic materials. Shown opposite is the Purity design being carefully printed at our factory.

Eco Credentials James also talked about how seriously the brand takes sustainability and environmental concerns. “We only use water-based, non-toxic inks, that are environmentally safe and free from VOCs, and we print on responsibly sourced (FSC certified), non woven bases. I’ve got to say that we’re extremely proud to be a 0% to landfill manufacturer, something that very few wallpaper manufacturers can claim. Any waste created during production is sent away and recycled to make energy.” He concludes, “Most of all we want people to enjoy using wallpaper in their homes as much as we love printing it!” Essence and all the 1838 Wallcoverings collections can be found on Wallpaperdirect, so take a look through the designs, order some samples and start creating an interior you’ll love spending time in! Coordonné love interior design and delight in surprising us with new and innovative ways to decorate our homes, allowing us to experiment with our interiors, to create a stylish, sophisticated European look. After all, the etymological essence of its own name in French, Coordonné, is just that: “coordinating, or going together”. Coordonné’s creative team use as inspiration: original designs worked in oil paints; collages of recycled raw materials; watercolour paintings; Indian inks and graphite as the source for their original wallcoverings. Maasai – Serengeti
The Maasai collection features lyrical scenes from East Africa, created by Coqui Ybarra and transformed onto wallcoverings and murals where the artist uses brushstrokes charged with symbolism, to portray the Maasai tribe and its culture. Landscapes, textures and colours filled with life and positivity. We hope you love as much as we do, both these new collections which truly express the breadth of design and attention to detail from Coordonné. Morris & Co. presents Simply Morris With Spring in mind, we were delighted to see this new collection from Morris, full of fresh and inviting colour combinations. The iconic British interior design brand Morris & Co have revisited their archive and created a carefully chosen edit of signature fabrics and surface printed wallpapers, expertly recoloured into a fresh garden palette – Simply Morris. Sitting beautifully between traditional Morris and Pure Morris, this collection offers an alternative decorating story with its clean grounds and vibrant motifs. Neither maximalist nor minimalist, its position is softer, more gentle, but far from subdued. Enter, Fresh Maximalism. Refreshing and joyous, a blend of swirling leaves and carefully positioned blooms which

The collection includes much loved patterns such as: Fruit, Willow Boughs, Pimpernel, Acanthus and Strawberry Thief; together with Severne a striking new archive inspired damask; Mallow a sweet single colour floral pattern and the pretty leaf trail of Standen. Rebecca Craig lead designer for Morris & Co. comments, “This collection takes its inspiration from the bare beauty of the original Morris & Co. hand carved blocks; their organic nature capturing the very ethos of William Morris. Celebrating the block’s simplicity and structure, we’ve created an exciting new collection with a confidence that stems from a history of integrity and iconic pattern. “Coloured to create a relaxing backdrop for modern living, the launch’s lighter palette is easy to use. The perfect starting point for Fresh Maximalism, Simply Morris honours history with its layering patterns and the charm only found within an English country garden.” Often displaying a lovely hand block printed look, all Morris & Co. wallpapers are designed and manufactured in England. Little Greene’s Marketing Director, Ruth Mottershead, is delighted to have worked in association with the National Trust again: “We are immensely privileged to have access to the National Trust’s incredible portfolio of properties, that are so beautifully looked after and treasured by the Trust on behalf of the nation. With the National Trust properties each containing such diverse decoration, creating a collection that encompasses the wide-ranging styles found in these historically significant interiors is a real joy.” A contribution from the sale of every roll of Little Greene wallpaper will be made in support of the National Trust’s conservation work, to ensure the nation’s historic houses, gardens and open spaces can be enjoyed for generations to come. And both collections are available on wallpaperdirect.com.

above the splash zone; the use of two paint colours is both practical and stylish and gives a lavish designer finish to the wall. A large houseplant will always make a tropical room come to life. Flight of Monarchs - The annual migration of North America’s Monarch butterfly is a unique and amazing phenomenon and is the inspiration for this exquisite wallpaper. The overlaying of fine art drawings of the butterflies in motion creates depth and movement and a breath-taking display for your walls. Shown spectacularly here in a study, we think this would look truly wonderful on a ceiling too! Orchid Jungle - This striking wallpaper has been created two exciting colour combinations one dark and one fresh. Shown here is the cool, crisp white background version, perfect for creating a sophisticated home jungle vibe. Just add plants for the perfect summer all year round feeling. Passiflora - Fruit and flower designs are ideal for kitchens and dining areas, with the fruits often providing a cheerful colour-pop. This Passiflora wallpaper has a true to life scale (which is often a feature in Isabelle’s designs) and allows the foliage to mimic the climbing upwards of the plant in real life.

British success story
Lincrusta
Lincrusta catches the eye and captures the imagination whatever the setting. From classic country residences to modern urban living spaces, this incomparable range of wallcoverings, dado panels, friezes and borders allows for the creation of bespoke interiors. So what is Lincrusta? For a start, with its rich and illustrious heritage Lincrusta is a great British success story; a distinctive textural wallcovering more relevant than ever was as we all desire to create our own unique space. It was the ingenious creation of Frederick Walton who had pioneered the development of linoleum floor coverings during the 1860s. Lincrusta was an instant success, replacing painstaking artisan plasterwork and appealing to Victorian England’s tastes because of its beauty, practicality and durability. Lincrusta designs quickly found their way into notable buildings throughout the world. Absolutely unique and exceptionally beautiful, these wallcoverings remain unsurpassed for their deeper emboss, exquisite detail and enduring strength. A natural product, made from Linseed oil, Lincrusta is still manufactured by craftsmen in the UK, using the original recipe and process and to the same exacting standards. It is supplied in its natural nude colour, providing a textural blank canvas onto which you can project your own style, to create a truly unique look. The patterns within the collection take inspiration from a variety of sources: from the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome to cutting edge contemporary influences, including the beauty of nature and key periods in history from the Renaissance to the Edwardian era. The unrivalled depth of these embossed wallcoverings allows them to be decorated using a variety of different paint effects and colour combinations. You could choose
