Note from the Editor...

As we all move forward as the world reopens, the love of heritage, quality and craft has become hugely important, and we are seeing a younger generation fall in love with patterned wallpaper. Whether it is the original arts and crafts movement of William Morris under Morris & Co., the archives of the V&A being explored by 1838, or The National Trust with Little Greene, looking back is definitely propelling us forward. It is all about the colour mix that makes the paper relevant and contemporary. There may be ‘lookalike’ products being printed but the attention to detail, the mix of colour and the printing process puts the heritage brands firmly at the forefront of design.

Mid-century design also has a firm place in the hearts of many – again looking backwards and reminiscing about that period, so many wallpapers now enable us to travel around the globe while staying at home. Each room can represent a special period of time or place we want to be. One of my favourites is Jet Set in Stone from Mini Moderns.

One very positive thing that the pandemic has done is encourage us to live in more interesting spaces – no beige thank you! Let your mind travel the world.

Sanderson Arboretum

An enchanting collection inspired by England’s ancient woodlands, Sanderson Arboretum is an evocative interpretation of majestic trees, secluded glades and indigenous wildlife.

Wallpaper: Forest of Dean

Following the continued success of Sanderson Woodland Walk, Arboretum fuses contemporary, stylised elements with archival influences to recapture the glory of this muchloved country aesthetic.

Frogs, woodpeckers and goldfinches find their home amongst intricate paintings of nodding bluebells, springtime primrose and wild dogrose flowers, with age old sycamore and oak trees. A recipe for positivity and the opportunity to reconnect with nature, this collection reminds us of the restorative powers the countryside provides.

Rebecca Craig, lead designer at Sanderson explains, “Arboretum is the Latin name for ‘a place with trees’,

which not only provides a beautiful landscape, but also a focus for research and preservation. This collection is our interpretation of ancient woodlands, reimagined into a range of designs and scales, all carefully coloured to work throughout the home. From the relaxing benefits of forest bathing to spiritual and symbolic associations, Arboretum raises the awareness of these special habitats, and the endangered species that live there.”

Amongst a stunning array of designs, Forest of Dean’s magical scene has a beautifully naïve interpretation of deer, ferns and butterflies with striking jewel colours. Robin’s Wood shows the diverse flora and fauna of an ancient woodland thought to date back to after the last ice age,

in an all-over design of oak and sycamore leaves, which is inspired by an archive document.

New colourways of Woodland Chorus, with their exquisite depiction British birds make their home on the delicate branches in this all-over patterned wallpaper. Reproduced in two new contemporary colourways for our Arboretum collection, is one of our bestselling designs. Inspired by an 18th century painting of plants and animal, gravure printing shows the motif’s fine detail and exceptional colour. Also available in a range of fresh pastel shades and as a coordinating fabric.

Sycamore and Oak’s striking 3m wallpaper panel is a hand painted celebration of the English countryside, translated into a fresh botanical panorama of gorgeous, layered trees, intricate flowers and delicate wildlife.

Introducing The New Collection From

Morris & Co. Emery Walker’s House

Calling all fans of William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement and historic design…

A Friendship Through Craft

Sir Emery Walker (1851-1933) and William Morris (18341896) had a relationship that bore seemingly endless fruit. With Walker’s industry expertise as a noted typographer, Morris established the Kelmscott Press for book printing, a feat scholars refer to as Morris’s final triumph.

In a gesture of friendly loyalty, Walker decorated his house almost entirely with Morris & Co. furnishings. To this day, 7 Hammersmith Terrace remains one of the largest repositories of original in situ Morris & Co. designs anywhere in the world.

The Collection

With one of the highest numbers of new and reintroduced Morris & Co. designs of any collection this century, this release marks a moment to be celebrated by William Morris fans across the world. Rediscovering designs long out of production and incredible handmade artefacts from the house, this collaboration celebrates 7 Hammersmith Terrace as one of the last great vestiges of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Borage, an 1883 design by William Morris. Beloved by bees and other pollinators, Borage is a perfect example of William Morris drawing ideas from the natural world and is translated for the first time on to wallpaper.

7 wallpaperdirect.com
Wallpaper: Borage

Jessica Clayworth, lead designer for Morris & Co., says “As a designer, expanding the archive of patterns first bequeathed by William Morris has been an enormous privilege. We’re thrilled to add new designs inspired by this remarkable house, each with a story to tell.”

Jessica continues “We’ve simply adored awakening sleeping Morris & Co. designs based on the exquisitely preserved examples in the house. These are designs, such as Emery’s Willow and Wallflower, which we’re glad to see return to our production books and contemporary homes.”

Emery’s Willow - Emery’s Willow is inspired by a wallpaper design hung in the drawing room of esteemed typographer, book printer and friend of William Morris, Sir Emery Walker. Emery’s Willow features unmistakable bubble-like shapes as a backdrop, introducing an element of play to this 1874 design. The willow tree, with its delicately entwining branches and curling leaves, is a motif William Morris returned to throughout his creative life.

Collaboration

1838 Wallcoverings

A collaboration with the V&A.

We were delighted to see the launch of this collaboration between the contemporary wallpaper craftspeople 1838 Wallcoverings and the Victoria and Albert Museum, the V&A Decorative Papers collection.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, (V&A) is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity, spanning 5000 years of human creativity. It was established in 1852 to make works of art available to all and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. Today, its purpose is to champion creative industry, inspire the next generation, and spark everyone’s imagination.

1838 Wallcoverings’ Managing Director James Watson says of the journey of the collaboration: ‘With innovation, craft and quality as the key values at the very core of our family business for over four generations, it has been an incredible privilege working with the V&A on this collection, an establishment globally recognised as an embodiment of these principles, ensuring that good design is recognised, celebrated and accessible to all. With such an extensive archive, of course the most difficult part of the process was to edit a final selection. We not only wanted to discover designs that immediately spoke to us on an aesthetic level, but that we also felt had a synergy that resonates with our own heritage, and as such many of

12 wallpaperdirect.com
Wallpaper: Kilburns Coral in Midnight

the items we chose were originally manufactured in the UK, which made this collection feel very personal.’

With inspiration from such a rich source each design comes with a full history surrounding the designer and their period of work.

This beautiful pattern Kilburn’s Coral has been named in honour of William Kilburn (1745–1818), from London. The V&A has in its collection a unique album of 223 exquisite watercolour textile designs by William Kilburn. Regarded as one of the 18th century’s most eminent calico printers, William Kilburn was a botanical illustrator and textile designer born in Dublin in 1745. His designs use floral motifs, accessorised with leaves, shells, ribbons or architectural elements, which demonstrate his great skill in pattern making, disguising the repeat in both complex and simple designs.

Whilst the archive inspiration for the Macaw wallpaper pattern is Walter Crane’s (1845-1915) design produced by the London based Jeffrey & Company. Macaw was originally created as a display piece for the 1908 FrancoBritish Exhibition held in London and was awarded a Grand Prix. Generally considered the most influential children’s book illustrator of his generation, Walter Crane also created many memorable designs for wallpaper.

This exuberant wallpaper was created by playing with the scale of the original archive document to make the design appear even more abundant and verdant. The original parrot’s face was given a friendlier expression and new leaf motifs were added. The joyful pattern features a proud, large-scale macaw, perched in a bountiful peach tree, chomping on tangled grape vines that twist through tree branches, with a background filled with leafy foliage.

13 wallpaperdirect.com
Wallpaper: Macaw in blush

The Mandarin Garden design was inspired by a furnishing fabric from Lancashire-based textile manufacturer, F.W.Grafton & Co. Produced in 1923, the original printed cotton has its roots in traditional wallpaper and textile designs from East Asia. This romantic view of a Chinese landscape with scenes of birds, water, shrines and plant motifs is very much in the style of a classic chinoiserie, but the Art Deco inspired blooms makes it easy to identify as British.

The original archive document of Floral Fanfare has required very little adaptation; the stylish and charming pattern has stood the test of time. New colourways bring a touch of modernity to the enduring design which dates from around 1880-1900 and features delicately drawn foliage and floral motifs with an Art Deco ambience evoked through mirrored image repeats of sculptural leaves and a geometric fan shaped floral motif.

Coordonné Adding beauty to everyday life

With more than 40 years’ experience Coordonné has built an international reputation for wonderful contemporary wallcoverings, which also respect the environment in their production.

You may not know that Coordonné is a family-run company based in Barcelona, Spain. The brand, founded in 1978 by Carmen López de Lamadrid, brought the quintessentially English floral style in wallpapers to Spain. Since then, with the next generation Gabriel Bans López de Lamadrid at the helm, the brand’s evolution is evident, in both the design of their wallcoverings and the production and quality of the papers, which now bring the very best in Spanish design to the world.

The company has its own manufacturing line and can produce wallcoverings of the highest quality in different finishes, ensuring a fast, personalised service that adapts to each project’s requirements and timings, while also respecting the environment. They have recently worked with the Japanese artist Hiroshi Tsunoda to create packaging, along the lines of a milk carton with recycled cardboard and which only require staples to seal it, not an adhesive, so both effective and innovative.

One of the brand’s design strengths is its versatility; their ranges include signature collections, classic-contemporary collections, compendium collections of essentials, and Contract design collections.

Aracne - Ovidio Linen mural

In 2023 as well as the wonderful new Aracne collection, we are shortly expecting collections called Lur and Petra, together with a versatile collection of stripes and checks.

Coordonné creates collections to bring emotion and life to a space; collections that complement every home’s intangible quality and personality.

Aracne is the epitome of luxury: a wonderful collection of murals, shown on wallpaperdirect with the Linen base but also available printed on Silk. The name of the collection is inspired by the Greek weaver Arachne, who

was turned into a spider by the goddess Minerva.

Many of the designs are new colourings of existing murals but there are some stunning new images too, which will totally transform your room.

Lur: the creative team at Coordonné took their inspiration for this collection from the Lur experimental garden in the Oyarzun valley, Guipúzcoa, in northern Spain.

The garden is a showcase for colour and blends artistic skill and natural landscapes. Extravagant, colour-filled

flowers; Minimalist species with a Japanese touch; Mysterious landscapes laden with mist and a touch of the pointillist landscapes style of Monet or Manet, create a truly life affirming collection. Simply glorious!

Meanwhile Petra is a new collection by the artist Coqui Ybarra under the brand Ybarra & Serret for Coordonné. Featuring the unique brush stroke of an artist who paints on canvas in large format and then adjusts it in scale and colour for wallpaper using vegetable dyes.

This time, the thematic focus of the collection is the Jordanian city of Petra and its historical singularity. And we find geometric metaphors that remind us of the hydraulic engineering works of this imposing city, as well as figurative patterns of nomadic characters and elegant floral and utopian landscapes.

Brand McKenzie Heart Deco collection

Re-visit the roaring 20s, 1920s that is, with this fabulously flamboyant collection from Brand McKenzie.

Brand McKenzie is a British wallpaper brand with a difference. You won’t hear us waxing lyrical about our long history or our extensive back catalogue of designs. Truth be told, our story has only just begun.

But what we lack in longevity, we more than make up for in creativity. Our hand-drawn papers are unapologetically bold – and unquestionably beautiful. They dare you to be

different; to step outside your comfort zone into a fabulous world inhabited by a cast of quirky characters. You’ll meet eccentric sea creatures riding bikes and puffing pipes; beautiful, bejewelled butterflies; and dapper leopards in bow ties and top hats.

Suffice to say, Brand McKenzie doesn’t conform to the norm. We forgo fickle trends in favour of papers that are

24 wallpaperdirect.com
Wallpaper: Leopard

Wallpaper: Curious Skies

truly different and truly individual. We understand it takes courage to be a shade braver – to go against the grain. That’s why current and future collections will be rooted in our desire to help people step outside their comfort zone by making daring décor decisions.

Wallpapers to mesmerise your senses

Chapter one of the Brand McKenzie story is dedicated to Tropical Daze, our eye-catching debut collection (and the antithesis to all that’s humdrum). It takes you on a magical journey through mystical islands and lush jungles. Hero designs include Animal Islands, offering a window to a

world where mythical creatures rub shoulders with exotic animals and birds. Can you spot the monkey with the telescope (hint: he is riding an elephant), or the majestic zebra unicorn’s preparing to take flight? Look a little longer and you’ll sneak a peek of the leopardess festooned with colourful plumes. Animal Islands perfectly encapsulates the very essence of Brand McKenzie’s design style: the more you look, the more you see!

Another big hit from our Tropical Daze collection is Curious Skies, which asks you to expect the unexpected. This story is set way up high where hot air balloons float across cloudy

25 wallpaperdirect.com
Wallpaper: Animal Islands

skies. Nothing unusual about that, we hear you say! But these are Brand McKenzie balloons, so instead of baskets, some balloons are tethered to decorative jardinieres, while others are attached to hanging baskets of trailing plants or large ornamental dining tables. The passengers are unpredictable too; think frogs, fishes, and newts (with the odd elephant, leopard and zebra thrown in for good measure).

Our glamorous twist on history

Tropical Daze laid the foundations for chapter two, and our most recent collection Heart Deco, which takes its cue from the 1920s and 1930s with art deco-inspired prints that promise to make walls pop. Of note is

The Art Deco Hills that looks to the Hollywood Hills for inspiration but adds a Brand McKenzie twist! Set against a backdrop of beautiful gardens and glamorous art deco mansions, the women in this story live their best life: they walk dogs (fan in hand), ride zebras wearing decadent headpieces or relax in bubble chairs that hang from palm trees. The women’s liberation movement was making significant strides in the early 20th century, and this is referenced in The Art Deco Hills too. These ladies are kicking up their heels – quite literally in some cases!

Clarke & Clarke | Marianne

Taking inspiration from the work of Marianne North, the pioneering Victorian British botanist and painter who travelled the world solo, documenting tropical flora and fauna in an unprecedented and contemporary way; this new collection of wallpaper and fabrics is a floral extravagance.

Having originally trained to become a vocalist, Marianne North’s career changed direction after her voice failed during practice. From 1855 onwards she travelled the world constantly, dedicating her life to botanical drawing.

North’s work resulted in a library of magnificent paintings, which are now on display in Kew Gardens. Profoundly influenced by her story, the Clarke & Clarke design team has created an exciting new collection of eclectic fabrics and wallpapers. Among the highlights are this beautifully botanically precise design Bracken with its elegant fern leaves and the stunningly, gloriously flamboyant Artus with is flower filled panelling effect.

Mini Moderns

Travelogue collection

Since launching in 2006, Mini Moderns has gained a loyal following of fans, who love hearing the stories behind the brand’s distinctive patterns. The London-based design studio was established by Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire, who share a passion for mid-century design, along with social history and popular culture – and past collections have drawn upon these themes.

New for 2023, the Travelogue collection takes Mini Moderns’ story-telling pattern to the next level. Inspired by two decades of travel, Mark and Keith invite you to journey with them. Your first destination is the USA, to enjoy some Californian mid-century architecture, via Manhattan, to a peaceful retreat in the Catskill mountains, upstate New York. Then it’s off to Europe, for a cultural visit to Copenhagen and a stroll through

the streets of Paris, before relaxing in Mediterranean sunshine in the Bay of Naples.

And whilst this collection encourages you to enjoy a spot of virtual globe-trotting, you can be assured that Mini Moderns are always conscious of their carbon footprint. All wallpapers are printed in the UK, using water-based inks on substrates sourced from FSC certified forests. In addition, the energy used to print Mini Moderns wallpapers is derived from renewable sources.

Enjoy your trip!

Jet Set: Fasten your seat belts as Mini Moderns celebrate the golden age of air travel with their collection of vintage boarding passes and luggage tags.

Catskills: This design captures the atmosphere of a trip that Mark and Keith took to upstate New York, staying in a little wooden cabin in the shadow of the Catskill mountains. Various species of trees native to the area are represented in the print, including Red Pine, Yellow Birch and Quaking Aspen.

Inger Waage, Mini Moderns visited Copenhagen one sunny Easter weekend. Their first sight of bustling Nyhavn, with boats sailing past its colourful townhouses, has stayed with them for many years, culminating in this design.

Emma’s Apartment: Discussing the distinctive zinc-clad rooftops of Paris whilst visiting their friend, Emma, in her typical Parisian apartment, Mini Moderns conceived the perfect way to pay tribute to one of their favourite European cities. This love letter to Paris depicts its architecture and its shimmering metallic rooftop canopy.

Limoneto: The beautiful coastline that stretches from the Bay of Naples to the Amalfi coast is made all the more

special by its many lemon groves. This unique combination inspired Mark and Keith as they contemplated the view from their favourite hotel, designed in the 1960s by Gio Ponti, overlooking the Bay of Naples towards Vesuvius.

Porcellana: A visit to the stylish hotel Maison La Minervetta, perched on a cliff top overlooking Sorrento harbour, inspired Mark and Keith to go souvenir hunting in the streets of the old town. The result is this full-colour trompe l’oeil explosion of hand painted ceramic plates depicting nautical scenes and culinary treats.

Little Greene Collaboration

This year Little Greene bring us more of their amazing designs, inspired by their collaboration with the National Trust.

Timeless designs with an authentic selection of historic wallpapers being adapted and recoloured for use within the modern interior. Each design has been created from original source material found at three of the National Trust’s historic houses, Oxburgh Hall and Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk and Newark Park in Gloucestershire, with the addition of one design that has been recoloured and revived from the Little Greene archive.

Employing traditional methods of printing that have remained unchanged for over 100 years, the collection

comprises an array of hand-painted birds, stylised florals and scrolling trails, as well as a traditional ‘Toile de Jouy’ called Lovers Toile from the 1950s.

And the ultimate joy of this collection is of course that Little Greene provide the perfect matching paint for their wallpapers.

The ‘National Trust Papers III’ collection offers a new approach to pattern colouration within the Little Greene collections, reinterpreting the colour drenching paint trend

that has led to enveloping, intimate interiors, with many of the wallpapers featuring bold tonal colourways. These designs include Poppy Trail in shades of Masquerade pink, and Hoja in four colourways, including Hellebore and Air Force Blue.

And one of our favourite designs is this amazing new interpretation of Briar Rose from the late 19th century in the rich Green Verditer shade. Characterised as being in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style, with its stylised rose trail, this wallpaper was originally designed by children’s book illustrator, Walter Crane. Many of Crane’s drawings became nursery

wallpapers and Briar Rose began its life as the background to a wallpaper called ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, which featured characters from Sleeping Beauty among the roses.

Another more contemporary find, this Volières wallpaper featuring 1950s style doves, ribbons and flowers, is a sweet reimagination of an 18th-century design.

A contribution from the sale of every roll of Little Greene

Farrow & Ball New season colour

Meet the latest colours from Farrow & Ball to bring delight to your decorating for this season, and many more.

The 11 new additions to the Farrow & Ball signature palette are inspired by moments of joy, comfort and refreshment. With signature richness, depth and extraordinary response to light, each one is unmistakably Farrow & Ball.

of the team behind the colours, said: “We’re so excited by these 11 new shades, which take their lead from our existing palette and have that instantly recognisable Farrow & Ball elegance. They range from easy-to-use lights to dramatic and atmospheric darks, all of which make our palette even more relevant for celebrating and sharing our homes.”

40 wallpaperdirect.com
Joa Studholme, Colour Curator for Farrow & Ball and one Walls: Selvedge No.306, Estate Emulsion; Woodwork: Hopper Head No.305, Estate Eggshell

Crafted with every season in mind, these versatile shades can be effortlessly included in your spring scheme. Here are just a few ways you could combine these new colours.

Two instant classics to come from the latest additions are Beverly and Selvedge, both loved for their dependable, familiar feel that creates bold, welcoming spaces. This combination is a firm favourite of Charlotte Cosby, Creative Director for Farrow & Ball: “I’ve developed a soft spot for many of the new colours especially Beverly, which, just like its namesake, is reassuring, uncomplicated and full of

depth. We used it in a kitchen with Selvedge panelling and I wanted to move in immediately.”

For a scheme that celebrates the spring awakening of nature, there’s no better green than Eddy. This calming shade is inspired by the gentle whirlpools found in meandering streams. A lovely choice for garden rooms, conservatories and other spaces where you want to bring the great outdoors in, try pairing it with complementary white, School House White, or take it all over to fully embrace its natural beauty.

When it comes to creating a clean, pared-back palette, look no further than Stirabout. This oatmeal shade is, as Joa describes it, “the perfect neutral”, adding just the right hint of warmth to a space – especially great for those slightly cool, crisp spring mornings. For bedrooms, living rooms and snugs, one of Joa’s favourite tips is to take one colour across your walls, woodwork and ceiling for a protective, enveloping feel.

“The rich tone of Wine Dark is designed to create intimate rooms to retire to in the evening” says Joa, “hopefully defining the end of the working day as so many of us now work from home.”

Over 100 years of PLAYTIME

Albany

Spanning over 100 years, the Albany brand has adapted and developed over time, while still keeping the fundamental values of good quality product at the heart of what we do.

albany for children of every age .

This drive for good quality is reflective of the brand name itself, which was inspired by the affluent Albany mansion flat, located off Piccadilly, where the interior decoration was said to have been of impeccable standard.

At its core, Albany is a wallpaper-focused brand. In the early days, Clement Brewer, the founder of the company, would lovingly craft wallpaper pattern books by hand. The process we use now isn’t too dissimilar from this, in that our dedicated team of buyers will carefully select and approve each paper before it can be added to our pattern books and be loaded to our website. At wallpaperdirect.com, there are over 1,600 Albany wallpapers listed – meaning it is almost guaranteed that you will find something to suit your taste, whether that be floral, damask, contemporary, traditional or a complete wildcard!

Of course, Albany has now given its name to a vast range of decorating supplies, loved by both DIY fanatics and professionals alike. The range now includes everything from paint brushes to wallpaper adhesive and beyond.

So whether you fall in love with one of these bold combinations of the colours as in the Wear the Walls, Treath design (on previous page) or in this stunning Mandarin Garden design from 1838 Wallcoverings, this is a joyful combination to bring home.

Alternatively, you may prefer to lead with a strong shade of blue as shown in the Boråstapeter, My Secret Garden design and then you can add splashes of orange or geranium with your soft furnishings and curtains.

A more subtle combination of the colours can also be used, as shown in the delicate repeating arch pattern, Callalia from Masureel, and this works equally well, especially when you combine it with accessories in one of the feature colours.

There are endless ways to combine the colours using wallpaper patterns, paints and soft furnishings, to really bring this designer trend home.

you get slightly more square footage from the roll than you do a standard European roll.

Designs include a glorious selection of detailed florals and delicate small scale patterns; where you can really appreciate Anna’s artwork including Bramble, Garden Party and Strawberry Fields.

And the simple restrained elegance of small patterns like Eden and Mughal Rose which contrast with the intricate patterning and exuberance of designs like Wild Wood Garden and Menagerie.

Make a lasting impression

With Lincrusta

This natural wallcovering made from Linseed oil, has an unrivalled emboss, due to its unique printing process which uses beautiful hand-engraved rollers, following time honoured traditions. Although steeped in history and proud of its heritage, Lincrusta is not stuck in the past. Within the range you will find designs to suit all types of interior, from classic archive pieces to contemporary art inspired patterns.

How it looks in your home is entirely up to you. Delivered in its natural colour, Lincrusta is a sculptured blank canvas onto which to project your own style and taste. The result is a totally bespoke wallcovering, totally unique to you.

Paint it elegantly in white to replicate ornate plaster work, or in the colour that underpins your scheme. Adding further colours and metallics using paint techniques takes it to another level.

For Spring 2023, Lincrusta introduces a new pattern called Trellis. Originally inspired by the trellis work of traditional English cabinetry, this design takes reference from the past, yet its clean lines, give it a contemporary air. Paint it in deep rich hues for a cosy sitting room or smart library/office.

This season interiors are all about being tactile and what better way to introduce texture to your room than with Lincrusta wallcoverings?

Painted in breezier colours it is reminiscent of trellises found in gardens and can be perfect for a room that leads outside, such as a garden room or kitchen. And don’t forget the 5th wall, Trellis also provides a wonderful lattice work for the ceiling.

From the Smallest spaces in the house, to art on a grand scale, the only limits are your imagination!
