“The newest wallpaper collection has been inspired by the exotic Caribbean with maximalist tropical florals”

“Cape Town: a capital city proud of its diversity”

Travel the World Metropolitan Stories:

When we launched the first collection of stories in 2019 we were absolutely stunned with the response from our customers, to this amazing collection of wallpapers. Inspired by cities and the young people who live in them. Their architecture, atmosphere and national passions, it was simple crammed full of designs perfect for modern homes and at an affordable price too! And so we were delighted when the new ‘very large’ collection arrived in our office for 2021.

Inspired by the need to brighten all our lives, the designers have taken their inspiration this time from some of the most colourful and passionate cities around the globe.

And so Barcelona is all about Gaudi colour and heat, about art and culture on corners of small alleyways in this proud and lively Catalonian city.

Where designs include rich coloured foliage and montages of architectural elements, with distressed plaster work and tiles

New York: with its young, sophisticated city vibe brings you a toned down, pared back look for the ultimate in city living! A simplified loose check pattern and a lightly distressed Art Deco diamond pattern are the story.

Cape Town: a capital city proud of its diversity, the designers are portraying elements of its history combined with the power of nature and strong, bold colours.

“Marrakesh: This city brings us a touch of the wonder of the Arabian Nights”

Tokyo: bustling, busy city with its heady mix of technology, young entrepreneurs and a strong sense of its own history and belief in Japanese traditions, both new and old values. Reflect in this delightful, fresh delicate interpretation of Cherry Blossom and the Carp and Lily Pad designs.

Marrakesh: This city brings us a touch of the wonder of the Arabian Nights with a glimpse of the Orient, to the 21st century with a relaxed, casual feel, reflected in the simple palm leaf patterns and cosy rug pattern designs…

And finally, St Petersburg brings the feminine charm of a modern city, to the luxurious baroque history of these designs, with flamboyant marble tiling and luxurious damask patterns.

As with the earlier collections there are also a range of textured plains, perfect to complement the patterns or work peacefully on their own.

All the wallpapers now available on wallpaperdirect and through branches of Brewers.

Harlequin

Stunning, subtle, sophisticated, occasionally bold but always at ease...

The new collection of wallpapers from Harlequin: Momentum 7 is a welcome addition to this long running series this Spring. Taking inspiration from city architecture and the elegance of organic structures the designs come in a range of rich colours including Ink, Bronze, Forest and Rosewood with eight new wallpaper patterns.

Fade: A textured embossed vinyl, with metallic highlights and small refracted shards of colour.

“We’ve taken close up elements from layered leaves and flowers” Claire Greenfield

Luminance: Shadowy silhouettes of flower with textured emboss – shown here in the Bronze colourway.

Transverse: Angular architectural shapes with a pleasing repeat.

Aucuba – painterly loose styled palm leaf design.

Oscillation – shown here in the Rosewood colourway – has a blurred stripe effect, creating a pleasing all over modern effect.

Claire Greenfield, head of design for Harlequin says, “This exciting next chapter in the Momentum story represents a snapshot of urban life. From dusk till dawn, we’ve looked at positive and negative spaces: transposing, refracting and shattering. We’ve taken close up elements from layered leaves and flowers to add a softer, painterly aspect that contrasts against strong edges and contemporary geometrics.

A broad and diverse collection, we’re blending the permanency of structures with the everchanging beauty of nature.”

Style trend Distant Shores

If you could go anywhere, where would you go?

As we long for foreign travel, whether it be a tropical getaway or cultural city break, interiors inspired by distant shores offer calm and relaxing living spaces which make our homes feel like safe and inviting places to recharge and dream….

Drawing inspiration from different cultures brings diversity and makes a space more interesting and traveling exposes us to things we’ve never seen before. Bringing these influences home allows us to enjoy these experiences in the context of our own lives.

At a time when are all looking for some escapism this trend invites us to immerse ourselves in transportive deep colour: ocean hues of ultramarine where we can almost smell the saltwater air, lush jungle greens, tropical brights and warm earth tones; don’t be afraid to mix and match colours, hues and luminosity.

Wallpaper: Oriah Glitter £35 per roll

Are metallic/ glitter wallpapers difficult to put up?

Jane, Bangor

No not usually, and if they are on a nonwoven substrate (also described as pastethe-wall) they can be even easier for the home decorator.

One observation with metallics is that they will show up any imperfections with the wall behind so preparation and applying a lining paper is recommended. Also with metallic and glitter wallcoverings the joins can often remain visible.

Can I paper over existing wallpaper?

Martin, St Albans

You can but ‘should you?’ is another question! Ideally you should always strip the existing wallpaper, repair and prepare the wall to create the best possible, smooth surface for your new wallpaper.

There are some vinyl wallpapers which have a paper backing which is sometimes left intact on the wall when you peel away the vinyl front. However, it is still best advice to strip Wallpaper: Bengal Tiger £96 per roll

this away and start again from fresh, as this is not a lining paper. Professional decorators will always apply a new lining paper to get the best result. If you are applying the wallpaper yourself hanging a lining paper will give you some useful practise, before you tackle the top paper.

Handy Tip: Always use a ready mixed wallpaper paste, and for the very best adhesion use a wallpaper primer sealer on the bare stripped wall before applying your top papers.

“Taking inspiration from the elegant style of British stately homes and gardens”

Wallpaper: Hedgerow £ 105 per roll

1838 wallcoverings

At the heart of 1838 wallcoverings is a celebration of design and craftsmanship.

The brand name evokes the deep roots of wallpaper innovation for 1838 was the year the first wallpaper machine was pioneered, just a few miles away from their factory.

A family owned business, 1838 Wallcoverings is led by brother and sister team James and Abigail Watson, whose family has over 4 generations of wallpaper printing experience at their factory in Lancashire, England.

Their collections of wallpapers and beautiful murals have proved very popular on wallpaperdirect. Particularly the Willow collection and its Hedgerow design was one of our standout successes in 2020.

So we have high expectations for this eclectic new modern archive themed Pavilion Collection. And from these images, I don’t think we are going to be disappointed.

Taking inspiration from the elegant style of British stately homes and gardens, old world elements are combined with adventurous colour and innovative techniques. The sumptuously beautiful designs showcase our contemporary craftsmanship, including richly textured new special effects and stunning murals.

The wallcoverings in Pavilion are like works of art. Enthralling, hand-painted designs recreated digitally at an impressive scale and in a rich profusion of colours.

1838 wallcoverings provide luxurious, good design for every home – something we are very passionate about here at wallpaperdirect and hope you will love too.
