Personalised Print Franchise Opens A new concept print business gives photographers and entrepreneurs the chance to operate their own virtual print shop - setting up their own prices using the given software. The service, called ASK, was established a quarter of a century ago but now it intends to build upon the business’ ‘expertise and success’ by rolling out the franchises. They hope to recruit entrepreneurs who are ‘professional, reliable, good communicators and have a drive to succeed’. The franchise is ‘completely

The company surpassed its fundraising target in just two weeks, raising over £1.5 million on crowd funding website CrowdBnk. Explaining his decision to welcome online investors, CEO Paul Anson said: “I spend a lot of my time trying to explain to investors, normally involved in internet businesses, biotech and

Then it occurred to me – the people that know this already are in the print industry and LumeJet’s culture is one of openness and collaboration. Let’s let everybody and anybody be a part of building a new print technology business financially as well as commercially”. LumeJet is best known for its high quality printers, fast printheads and digital lithographic applications, but now it wants to investigate

Canon replaces two PIXMA Pro printers

The recently announced PIXMA PRO 100S and 10S replace the existing PRO100 and 10S respectively. According to Canon, these ‘deliver a whole host of new connectivity options’. Like their predecessors, the 100S uses 8 dye-based inks to produce prints up to A3 size, while the 10s uses 10 individual inks. The main difference is that users can now print directly from the cloud using Cloud Link.

Devon print firm Invests £1m to Grow Business Totnes-based Kingfisher Print & Design has announced plans to invest in a new litho press and intelligent web2print software to boost business. The 30-year-old firm hopes to shake off competition with its new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL75, which should save them £60,000 a year thanks to the AutoPlate XL for fully automatic simultaneous plate changes. Managing Director Ross Bellotti told West Morning News: “It’s fair to say 2014 has been a

pretty good year for us all here at Kingfisher Print & Design as overall sales are up 7%. Our biggest achievement has been in growing sales and reducing costs simultaneously. “We have achieved this by reducing waste and developing more robust processes for taking on the right type of work for us; making us more efficient and doubling our net profit. There are exciting times ahead as more and more of our clients are seeing the value and return in using personalised print.”

Printing Plates Help Poor Communities Fujifilm has raised over €150,000 in its continued support of charity WaterAid. The company has donated a percentage of the sale of every square metre of Brilla HD PRO-T3 processes plates sold in Europe, Middle East and Africa to WaterAid. The photographic company doubled its target fund in the first 12 months of the initiative, raising €65,025 instead of the €30,000 expected. Total funds raised topped €150,299 in two years. Corporate Account Executive, Asma Rafiq, said: “We are delighted that what started out as a 12-month initiative two

years ago, has developed into an ongoing partnership with Fujifilm. The money they’ve already raised has made a major impact on our mission to give the poorest communities across the world access to safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation. Their support will continue to transform these people’s livelihoods for the better.“

Takashi Yanagawa - Senior Vice President, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH, commented: “With water very high on both WaterAid and Fujifilm’s agendas, together with the fantastic work this charity is doing, I cannot think of a better cause to support through our Brillia HD PRO-T3 sales. The overwhelming market success we’ve had with PRO-T3 has allowed us to donate a significant amount of money to WaterAid’s cause already, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them.” Fujifilm’s plate eliminates the processor, chemistry, gum and water used in the conventional plate production process.

From Warwickshire to Nashville – PermaJet Prepares to Launch in USA We talk to the company about their impending launch in America For 31 years the Imaging Warehouse has endeavoured to make its mark in the British print industry. Now, after developing three of the world’s leading print brands – PermaJet, Nova Darkroom and Nova Digital – it’s safe to say the endeavour has been a success. Having tackled the British market – alongside 30 other

countries, Imaging Warehouse now has its sights set on North America. It has recently signed a deal with US distributor Image Tech Marketing and will debut its line of PermaJet InkJet Papers and Canvases at Imaging USA Expo in Nashville in February. The expansion marks an important milestone in the

company’s life, as this will be the first time it has launched in the US. Over the years the team, led by founder and Managing Director Robin Whetton, has carefully navigated the ever-changing photo print industry by keeping customer survive at its heart. Commenting on starting the business, Mr. Whetton said:

“With the onset of the digital world, I’ve seen many changes in this industry and quickly realised that this new form of image capture was rapidly progressing. “By purposely bringing together a team of staff who understand the passion and needs of a photographer, I have been able to ensure that we can offer a one-stop mail order and online facility, with over 2,500 products, to satisfy all imaging needs, whether darkroom or digital.” In 1999 the company launched, PermaJet and it has since become the manufacturer and supplier of one of the world’s most comprehensive range of inkjet papers for all digital photographic printing applications. Catering to a

varied host of users, including professional portrait and sports photographers, commercial labs, artists, museums, education facilities, as well as home printing photographers, has seen PermaJet become a very prominent brand. Based in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, their inkjet media is sold throughout

Spokesperson Joseph Reiner believes Imaging USA is the perfect place to launch the brand, stating: “Professional photographers and imaging professionals are the heart of our business, and Imaging USA is one of the best places to reach them.” With more than 10,000 photographers descending upon the Music City for Imaging USA, PermaJet recognises the convention as a ‘can’t miss’ opportunity to present its product lines in front of this large group of professionals. Joseph explained that the show would be a way of gaging the market, with the MD on hand to engage with visitors, offer product demonstrations and generally support the launch.

“We only launched the SnapShut Folio to support our paper lines, but it’s really kicked off and it’s incredibly popular now. We could be looking to launch it in the US in around 18 months.”

the UK and exported to more than twenty four different countries. PermaJet has pioneered a number of popular products, including textured Fine Art InkJet Papers (never seen before by photographers), and the first CIS Bulk Ink Systems.

He believes the company’s excellent service will stand up to US competition, stating: “People specifically come to us for high quality”. Their team plans to take a selection of products with them, including the award-winning Gloss, Oyster, and DoubleSided collections, as well as a wide range of smooth, textured and fibre-based Fine Art Papers across a comprehensive range of sheet and roll sizes. However, as with all new markets, PermaJet’s US distribution plan will be flexible, continuously changing and based on when and where the demands appear. Joseph revealed that they could potentially expand the line of papers to include the brand’s SnapShut Folio, launched at photokina last year. The SnapShut Folio is a portfolio for photographers who want to display their prints or projects in a sleek, secure, professional way. The folder’s hinge snaps shut, so if the user needs to edit or add a page, all they have to do is fold back the cover, remove the item, replace and release to snap it shut. The SnupShut Folio comes with a choice of finishes, including smooth and leather. Joseph said: “We only launched the SnapShut Folio to support our paper lines, but it’s really kicked off and it’s incredibly popular now. We could be looking to launch it in the US in around 18 months.” To find out more about PermaJet, visit their site at www.permajet.com

Beards Are In – And So Is Fujifilm

Fujifilm recently showcased its Crystal Archive paper at Brock Elbank’s ‘Beard’ exhibition at Somerset House Beards may be bad news for shaving product manufacturers (cutting sales by £72m last year) but for photographer Brock Elbank, they provided the perfect muse for his latest project. He started taking photographs

of bearded subjects to raise awareness of skin cancer after a close friend of his died from the disease. He started #Project60 with the idea of photographing 60 people with beards from all walks of life to spread awareness

of The Beard Season. This is a charity that aims to save lives by spreading awareness of melanoma, encouraging people to get a check, grow a beard, start a conversation and spread the word. When Elbank’s striking

portrait of charity founder Jimmy Niggles went viral on social media, the project gained traction. He has since received over 1,200 applications from people hoping to participate in the project. Those he selected, 80 in total, travelled to his studio to sit for a portrait at their own expense. Notable subjects include the recently knighted Sir John Hurt, acclaimed British artist Gavin Turk, Everton and US international goalkeeper Tim Howard, model Ricky Hall, Nick Wooster (the US fashion guru considered as the king of men’s street style) and the stunning British bearded lady, Harnaam Kaur, a woman with polycystic ovaries which have caused her to grow facial hair as a symptom. Commenting on his project, Mr Elbank said: “I’m not jumping on any fashion bandwagon with this – it’s just a very interesting subject.” It is thought the charity now helps to save on average a life every week. The 80 portraits are now being exhibited at London’s Somerset House (March 5 - 29),

each printed on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Paper. The photographer said: “I was completely blown away with the quality of prints that Lumejet produced for this exhibition - all output on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Paper. They look phenomenal and the colour accuracy is superb. “I just gave Lumejet’s Paul Anderson my files and he told me he’d show me what they could do. The combination of the Lumejet S200 printer and FujiColor Crystal Archive DP11 Matte Paper worked brilliantly and the exhibition prints look fantastic.” Fujicolor Crystal Archive Paper is a silver halide colour paper, designed exclusively to produce high-image-quality color prints on both analogue and digital printers. This paper incorporates latest silver halide emulsion technology, coupler technology and layer design technology to deliver enhanced colour reproduction, white purity, image stability and handling of the photo. Your Essential Guide to the Latest Launches FUJIFILM LAUNCHES JET PRESS 720S

Photo: www.adcomms.co.uk

Fujifilm has launched a new version of its B2 sheetfed inkjet press, the Jet Press 720S. The new model features a number of improvements on the original Mk1 machine, including the ability to handle variable data. The company said: “[Our] objective was to set for simply ‘cutting edge’ and to create the most effective inkjet technology. By effective, we mean the ability to create new business that will inject the entire industry with new life. To realise this objective, we built a team from the resources of the entire Fujifilm Group. “Concentrating on inhouse expertise, we succeed produced solutions to touch problems. Print head development, ink production and system design all benefited from this approach, culminating in the next-generation digital inkjet press, Jet Press 720.” The new printer incorporates new technologies that are unlike offset or POD presses, Fuji claims. They have named it Rapid Pigment Coagulation (RAPIC). This is applied to the paper before inkjetting, allowing opponents of the RCP solution to react instantaneously with the ink, promoting rapid coagulation of the pigment.
