Double the fun, triple the revenue DNP Photo Imaging Europe has presented the latest model of duplex printers: the DS80DX. In the light of the strong trend for added value photo products and especially photobooks, DNP says retailers benefit
from instant onsite production and make good margin in their shop. Futuresource Consulting has published its consumer photobook report highlighting the growth rate of orders in retail. DNP said: “It shows that
HP Split Confirmed Computing giant HP has announced plans to separate into two new companies. Hewlett-Packard (HP) is to become two separate publicly traded companies. HewlettPackard Enterprises will take over the corporate computing, software, infrastructure and finance services, while HP Inc. will take over the personal computing and printing business including the new 3D printing business. The split is expected to be finalised by the end of fiscal 2015, marking the end of its five-year turnaround plan. Current shareholders
will own shares in both businesses. HP shares have risen by more than 8% since the news was announced. CEO Meg Whitman said: “The decision to separate into two marketleading companies underscores our commitment to the turnaround plan. It will provide each new company with the independence, focus, financial resources, and flexibility they need to adapt quickly to market and customer dynamics, while generating long-term value for shareholders.” HP Inc. will retain the current logo.
retailers now have the fast and simple production of photobooks, greeting cards and calendars in their own hands. They can sell their products in an instant to the consumers coming back from holidays, family events, or the children’s sports tournaments, giving the consumer the confidence that they don’t have to wait a few days but can take their fun product home within the hour.” www.dnpphoto.eu
Kodak: Return of the Instant Square Print The square photo print is one of the most popular image formats on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. Now, Kodak has added a square print option to its Kodak Picture Kiosks. All users have to do is connect wirelessly through the Kodak Moments App to turn their images into ‘retro’ prints. The new feature demonstrates the company’s aim to drive younger customers towards photo print. The feature was showcased at photokina 2014.

news Fujifilm has ‘excellent’ time at photokina
The interactive Fujifilm booth invited visitors to try out the company’s products and services, designed to ‘emphasise the essential values intrinsic to photographs such as shooting, preserving, displaying and gifting. Many visitors engaged in experiencing the process of creating their own photobook and trialled the new software and app for prints from their smartphones. The new mini Instax Share SP-1 Printer was also on display.
3D Printing Could ‘disrupt’ Print Industry According to a report conducted by Futuresource, 3D printing technologies are reaching a point of maturity that could soon lead towards consumer and retailer adoption. Forecasts by the organisation indicate that the global 3D printing industry could be worth in the region of £5.8 billion by 2018. Matt Marshall, Head of Print & Imaging at Futuresource Consulting said: “3D printing has the potential to disrupt many aspects of the current imaging and output ecosystem. We’re seeing a multitude of machine
manufacturers, scanner manufacturers, designers, content owners, retailers, assembly plants, IP authorities and innovators, all exploring the possibilities and assessing whether 3D printing will complement or compete with traditional manufacturing.” A number of global brands are already investigating the commercial applications of 3D printing, including HP, Ricoh and Samsung. Acquisition is expected to grow from 78,000 unit sales globally in 2013, to over one million units by 2018, offering massive revenue potential for many industry players.
Canon and DINAX Team up to Produce New Printing Software Canon has teamed up with software developer DINAX GmbH to introduce dedicated versions of its Mirage professional printing software optimised for Canon’s imagePROGRAF range of large format printers. Designed to handle the printing demands of photographers, designers, agencies and print service providers, as well as offering a fast return on investment, Mirage has established itself as the best selling print

software solution for large format printers over the last six years. The partners have produced two Mirage Editions for Canon, designed to present all the print output features and tools in one clear, intuitive layout. The software can manage and print an unlimited number of
images in a variety of formats at the same time, automatically generating optimum image layouts to maximise cutting and output efficiencies while minimising wastage. In addition, it supports all colour modes, including mixed configurations such as RGB and CMYK in one document, and generates an exact and precise ‘soft proof’ in the Mirage Preview window. The new software is available immediately either directly from Canon or through its network of authorised Canon resellers.

Ricoh Pro VC60000 for Graphic Arts Ricoh has described its new inkjet technology as the ‘future of commercial print’. The Ricoh Pro VC60000 is a new generation continuous feed printer for commercial use in the graphic arts sector. The printer achieves a physical resolution of up to 1200x1200 dpi with a dynamic variable drop size within each pixel, providing additional perceived print quality. According to Ricoh, this will ‘meet the high productivity needs’ of commercial printers, offering speeds of nearly 100,000 A4 images per hour. Peter Williams, Executive Vice President and Head of the Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh Europe,
says: “The wait for graphic arts businesses seeking the optimum inkjet platform and partner to grow their business is at an end. At Ricoh, we’ve combined our 25year experience in print head and ink
development with our software and services expertise to ensure we can work closely with our clients as they grow and change for the future.” Shipments are expected to start in EMEA in early 2015.
Kodak NexPress Upgrades ‘as Standard’ from 2015 A number of upgrades including long-sheet capability, new coating and HD Dry Ink options will come as standard with Kodak’s NexPress range as of the beginning of next year. The new long-sheet capability is aimed at OS, signage, gate-fold marketing materials and extended size dust jackets for books. It will extend the current maximum sheet size from 356x914mm to 356x1,000mm and the maximum printable area from 342x898mm to 342x984mm.
All presses from 2015 will also be configured with a Light Black HD Dry Ink station as standard, enabling greater image quality while simultaneously reducing the amount of CMYK ink used on the sheet. In addition, Kodak has added a new Dura Coat finish for added value, as well as a Clear Ink to deliver a thin matt protective layer over the printed parts of the sheet.
Finally, all new presses using Kodak’s HD Inks will include a new automated imaging cylinder cleaning system, designed to reduce operator maintenance time and increase imaging cylinder life. The system will also be available as an option on presses using non-HD Inks. InPrint 7
Pioneering Technology in Canvas Printing
In light of PermaJet’s recent launch of the new P3 Production Matt canvas, we take a closer look at the demand for canvas photo printing, and ask where the market is heading PermaJet used photokina, the biggest imaging show in the world, to unveil a new addition to its new ‘production’ media range. The P3 Production Matt Canvas 380gsm is made from an 80/20 polyester and cotton blend, making it highly water resistant with a fine textured, bright white matt surface. This gives it a wide tonal range, large colour gamut, ultra image sharpness and a high D-max rating ideal for both colour and monochrome prints. The new canvas is designed to be used with a wide range of inkjet printers using either dye of pigmented aqueous and latex inks, ensuring it is non-cracking when stretched around bars or frames. PermaJet said: “With global demand for inkjet canvas rising year on year, the P3 Production Matt Canvas fills a gap in the market and offers its users a material which truly resembles the look, feel and print quality of an artist’s stretched canvas where higher volume printing output is required.” Steve Price, Business Manager at Digital Imaging, believes printing photographs on canvas is a business model with real potential for digital imaging retailers. Canvas prints offer highperceived value for customers at a relatively low production cost, resulting in good profit margins
8 InPrint
for retailers. He added: “The affordability of high quality wide format inkjet printers in recent years has opened up many opportunities for the high street retailer/print lab to produce a variety of print services with low investment but a high return on profit.” “Printing customers’ images on inkjet canvas is just one of those most accessible and easily implemented services. Acquiring some basic essentials such as a staple gun, stretcher pliers, wooden bars and a roll of canvas itself typically requires an investment of less than £200. PermaJet offer such a basic starter kit to make your first five 12” x 8” stretched canvases for just £169.95 including VAT,” he said.
focus
“As social media photo sharing opens up photography to new market channels, demand can only increase for higher quality cameras at lower prices” “Within an hour, a fully stretched high quality inkjet canvas could be created and ready to be sold. Other extras such a PermaJet’s PermaPROtect canvas coating varnish for UV and handling protection simply adds another opportunity to add chargeable value to the finished work.” At the same time, canvas offers customers a creative way of displaying their photographs by
InPrint 9
producing a modern oil painting-like look with wide commercial appeal, from general buyers who appreciate the novelty of having their personal photographs stretched on canvas, to fine art photographers looking for a new way to mount their work. Steve said: “In this day and age of colour matching decor, canvases particularly appeal to most people as a form of image presentation as they avoid colour clashes and can be placed on any wall - no coloured frames to go out of fashion.” As social media photo sharing opens up photography to new market channels, demand can only increase for higher quality cameras at lower prices. The rise of compact system interchangeable lens cameras embodies this new demand, as consumers reach out for quality higher than the average point-and-shoot, without the price tag and complexity of a DSLR. This new access to
high quality imaging in turn demands better quality output: in the form of print. Consumers are looking for ever-more creative ways to display the thousands of images they take, with products such as photobooks, prints and canvases fulfilling that demand. There is no doubt canvas is on the rise,” Steve agreed. “Mostly because of the awareness of its existence and price point. Admittedly, there are differing levels of quality in the market and it is a “you get what you pay for” product but whether you buy a canvas from a supermarket photo kiosk or from a giclee print lab, its wider availability means more business. Other customers such as paint or sketch artists are seeking new and better ways to recreate their best selling pieces of artwork to maximise their profits without having to reproduce originals continually.” “The quality of an inkjet reproduction these days
“Consumers are looking for ever-more creative ways to display the thousands of images they take, with products such as photobooks, prints and canvases fulfilling that demand. ”

“ fl
focus can be hard to distinguish from an original piece of artwork. This gives the artist vast scope to open up their work to the public with valuable limited edition reproductions whilst retaining the integrity of the original. But the appeal is even wider than that whereby we see canvas images in every aspect of everyday life - restaurants, schools, museums, train stations, offices, homes - the list is endless. Try avoiding seeing one for 24 hours!” Steve believes there are plenty of reasons why P3 Production Matt is a workable option for retailers. He said: “By offering a cost effective and yet good quality canvas, PermaJet ensures that the printing market is able to offer more images which have the value, look and feel of true pieces of creative and personalised artworks whether the data source is paintbrush, pencil or photography.
“PermaJet P3 Canvas is tough, colour stable for long image life as well as being 100% pigment and dye ink compatible. In tandem with PermaPROtect coating varnish, which has been tested and certificated by an independent test laboratory, images will last beyond 85 years in normal room conditions before noticeable fade is visible. With a choice of roll sizes from 24” (610mm) through to 60” (1524mm), large stretched canvases can be made to adorn any environment.” To find out more about the new P3 Production Matt Canvas 380GSM, visit www.permajet.com, email info@permajet. com, or call +44 (0) 1789 739200.

A Decade in Photo
David and Geoff Youngs, co-founders of LiveLink, celebrate 10 years in the industry
14 InPrint
insight
Ten years is a long time in any industry, but even more so in photo. It’s perhaps hard to remember the accelerating impact of digital imaging a decade ago, but this month marks a decade since the birth of one of the UK’s leading photo personalisation companies, LiveLink. It is now 10 years since LiveLink was founded in (quite
literally) a garden shed in Hampshire, and it is time for In:Print to look at past and future plans with LiveLink’s founders, David and Geoff Youngs. After a few years working in the film location industry (designing image management systems for feature films) the brothers had come across an early photo kiosk in a central London photolab, while visiting

InPrint 15
for another project. “We had a look at it (a Noritsu CT1), and were fairly underwhelmed”, recalls David, “but when the lab manager mentioned what they had paid for it the month before, I almost fell off my chair. There was a synergy with what we were already doing in imaging, and we figured that if someone could sell a product that bad for a price that high, it must make sense to try and do something better”. Within four months, a first prototype kiosk was operational – and delivered into the
16 InPrint
enthusiastic hands of John and Anthony, LiveLink’s earliest and most constructive critics (a relationship that continues to this day!). Geoff says: “the first kiosk was incredibly basic by today’s standards but an 8Mb compact flash card was a big deal, and the idea of putting photos onto CD was still a novelty”. Further development continued, along with organic sales. “We were developing the software as fast as we possibly could, and yet the sales kept coming in, even before the software was officially
advertised,” said David. “We were upfront with the fact that the software was being developed on a daily basis, but thanks to this new retail phenomena called ‘the Internet’ it meant that a small company could update hundreds of machines without the costs and delay of sending out dozens of engineers.” The growing retail relevance of the Internet also caused the birth of a second product in the family, “The Web Kiosk”, a simple, flexible and efficient ‘website in a box’ which enabled retailers to
sponsored feature “‘The Web Kiosk’, a simple, flexible and efficient ‘website in a box’ which enabled retailers to receive orders from online and print them instore”
receive orders from online and print them instore. The new kiosks were proving so successful that before long there was a discrete phone call from the UK office of Noritsu (the Japanese manufacturer of the CT1 kiosk). A deal was made surprisingly swiftly, and a few weeks later, LiveLink became the technology provider for ‘The Noritsu CT-10’ and ‘The Noritsu Web Kiosk’ for online ordering. “Noritsu were great partners”, said David “They were trustworthy to deal with, made great mini-labs, and wanted to work with us to innovate in the customer facing technology”. In partnership with Noritsu, LiveLink’s brand took a backseat as their efforts focused on developing new technology and assisting new customers. “We remained a separate company, but in effect worked as a department within Noritsu. It was a good relationship but after some years Noritsu started a European restructuring and
InPrint 17
we amicably went in different directions”. LiveLink used the opportunity to exhibit as a manufacturer in its own right in 2011 at Focus on Imaging, together with a new version of the online “Web” kiosk and instore kiosk. A year later, LiveLink introduced CardCreator, an instore instant personalised greetings card printing kiosk that was developed to attract retail
18 InPrint
customers back into shops and away from the competitor Internet services. Initially with over 1,200 greetings cards and editable templates supplied by some of the most established names in the greetings card industry, the CardCreator enabled customers to insert their own photos, add their own messages and walk away with a finished card in minutes. Now in it’s 3rd year, the CardCreator offers over 2,000 cards from a broader range of licensors and photo gifts from the Adventa range as well as dye-sublimation printing from Citizen Printers. In recent years, LiveLink’s
sponsored feature continual development of photo websites and instore kiosks has established the company as a key player in providing instore and online White Label services to a variety of highly respected retail brands, both in the UK and abroad. “There have been plenty of growing pains. We’ve tried to keep the agility and personal touch of a small, responsive team – but there are now over 30 UK staff across three offices, and we have had to make some serious investment in infrastructure this year as a result”. The latest instore kiosk product from LiveLink continues the vein of innovation that has become so familiar. The Hybrid ‘615HD’ kiosk, first shown in prototype form at The Photography Show 2014, marries photo kiosk (lab and instant), CardCreator greetings cards and photo gifts into a completely modular, configurable package. The operating system enables labs to purchase just the functionality they want and allow for 3rd party providers to add their own ‘apps’. “We’re very grateful for the loyalty and support of so many of our clients. If so many of them hadn’t trusted their kiosks and websites to us over the decade, we wouldn’t have been able to produce the products we have today. It’s common to hear companies say ‘we care’, but I think our team really do. We haven’t increased support costs EVER in 10 years, and want to reassure those who trusted us over the last decade that we are looking forward to supporting them for the next.”

Your Essential Guide to the Latest Launches Epson launches EcoTank without the need for ink cartridges
HP launches the M630 series of printers - with added security
EcoTank printers come with enough ink in the box to print up to 4,000 pages in black and 6,500 pages in colour. That’s around two years worth of ink, without needing to change a single ink cartridge. With the L355 and L555, Epson is offering a new way of printing that delivers ultra-low-cost and hassle-free results for home and small office users. EcoTank printers feature ultra-high-capacity ink tanks that can be refilled using Epson genuine ink ‘easily and efficiently’. The printers can be set up in three steps: fill the ink tanks, turn the printer on and prime the ink system. When it’s time to refill, ‘affordable, hassle-free’ ink bottles make the process easy, according to Espon. Drip-free bottle spouts have been designed to make refilling the ink tanks as clean and hassle-free as possible.
HP has launched a series of security-backed multifunction printers (MFP), in addition to several security and management tools. The new HP M630 series of MFP printers comes complete with more than 200 security settings. The model is an updated version of the HP M4555 LaserJet. New tools include the HP Imaging and Printing Security Center 2.1 (IPSC) solution, an upgrade designed to simplify the how HP printing fleets are deployed. IPSC 2.1 is also geared toward enabling IT to more easily monitor printing fleets and oversee compliance.
Epson launches SureColor SC-P600 A3+ photo printer Epson has announced the launch of the SureColor SCP600, a ‘fast, flexible and easy-to-use’ printer designed to produce professional high-quality photo prints in sizes up to A3+. The SureColor SC-P600 is Epson’s top-of-the-range A3 photo printer and according to the company, combines ‘superb quality, high productivity and superior wireless connectivity in a compact and affordable package’. The SureColor SCP600 features Epson’s new UltraChrome HD and Vivid
Magenta ink to produce better quality prints. The new ninecolour UltraChrome HD inkset can reproduce a wide colour gamut and with a 2.84 DMax – the industry’s highest black density — produce ‘deep, rich
blacks and ultra-smooth tonal gradations’. Ideal for amateur and semiprofessional photographers, the SureColor SC-P600 will also appeal to businesses, such as architects, real-estate agents and advertising/design agencies, that have a regular requirement for high-quality colour presentations. The new Epson printer also provides Wi-Fi Direct® wireless printing connectivity from smartphones, tablets and PCs.
