Fashion in Motion Epson has teamed up with fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto for the V&A’s ‘Fashion in Motion: Kansai Yamamoto’ event. Using its specially developed inks, Epson has printed around 30 of Yamamoto’s designs on its digital textile printers amounting to more than 1,000 m2 of textiles including cotton, polyester and silk. Yamamoto’s creations, which combine traditional Japanese designs and ultra-modern styles, were largely printed using specialist Genesta inks on the Monna Lisa textile printing system, developed by Robustelli of Italy and using Epson’s inkjet technology, and the Epson SurePress FP30160. These printers allow designers such as Yamamoto full control over the printing process, ensuring faithful reproduction.

Fujifilm Processing Lab Plans for Closure Fujifilm is to close its E6 processing lab facility in November 2014. CC Imaging is unaffected by this decision and will continue trading as normal. This ceasing of operations has been planned in advance to enable customers who have rolls of Fujichrome Sensia process-paid film sufficient time to get them processed. Prepaid processing vouchers will continue to be available, but must also be used before the closing date of 1st November 2014. Gabriel Da Costa, Product Manager for Fujifilm, explained more: “It is with obvious regret that we have had to plan for

this closure. Sensia film has been a major part of Fujifilm’s history but increased production costs, coupled with decreasing global demand, led to the Fujifilm Corporation in Japan discontinuing Sensia film in 2010. As UK stocks of Sensia were run down the numbers of E6 films being processed has obviously declined too.” CC Imaging will continue with their existing lab facilities after the closure including the E6 processing line.

news Web-Based Printing - Is the Revoltuion Upon us? “Traditional” photo labs, watch out: a new generation of Webbased photo print services are getting ready to eat your lunch. They have their eyes set on the consumer market, and they are not wasting time. That is the essence of recent remarks by Frank Simon, founder and CEO of Ecce Terram, provider of digital imaging solutions for photo processing centers and leading retailers. Simon made his comments following the announcement that flyeralarm GmbH, one of Europe’s largest b2b online printers, has launched an online photo print service specifically geared towards consumers. The new consumer-facing platform, branded as ‘my FLYERALARM’, lets online visitors select and design personalized photo products from photo-imprinted soda cans to high-end photo books. “What impressed us most about the my FLYERALARM team was their forwardthinking approach, focus Quarter understanding Page Ad.pdf 15/5/13 of 09:30:40 and keen

today’s digital photo services consumer” said Frank Simon. “my FLYERALARM has done its homework. They clearly grasp what their new target market demands now, and where it is heading, and they are determined to use their main advantages, flexibility and speed, to become a major player.” “The current range of photo products is just the beginning,” said Stefan Constantin, CEO of my FLYERALARM. “We pride ourselves on being an innovative company and stay on top of the

newest trends.” Simon added that his company considers my FLYERALARM a prime example of a new force that is bound to change the photo processing industry. “Based on recent experience in similar project, I think it is fair to say that commercial printers seem to be much more flexible, compared to the old guard, in their response to the current shift in the consumer market for photo services and products.” he said. “Their mantra is ‘time-tomarket’ - not ‘time will tell.”

InPrint speaks to James Edgar, MD of Ferndown Photographic about becoming the latest Kodak Express. What will their branding mean for this longtime independent retailer? So, you’re a Kodak Express now, good for you! What does/will the process of becoming one entail for you? We’re really pleased and excited to have been accepted as a Kodak Express. The logistics of physically changing over are pretty straight forward: Kodak come along and rebrand the shop with new fascia and other point of sale features. This is great because it gives us give us a brand new story with added value and it keeps the shop looking fresh and new. What difference will this make for your business? I think, as an independent retailer, we are always up against the big high street brands especially in a fairly niche sector. The web is obviously our biggest challenge right now with consumers preferring to compare high street prices with online offers before deciding where to spend their money. I think creating brand continuity is essential, in the sense of tying up what a consumer searches for online with their experience on the high street. If they trust a brand they see online they’ll naturally trust the same brand when coming across it in

other places. Kodak is a household name and has been for decades, so I’m confident that the shoppers in Ferndown will relate to our new branding and come and see us! Will you be providing any new products or services because of it? We already provide most of the services that Kodak equipment offers. However, there are always new things! One of the key benefits of this new partnership is that we will be early adopters of brand new services as soon as they become available and that’s a real benefit for our customers. As an example, many print services are purchased through phone apps nowadays. Kodak’s new Net-to-Retail app is a new service that we will get involved in from the get go if we can. We think this is an excellent service as well as the way forward. Watch this space! What are the advantages? As mentioned ,the key advantage is being associated with a well known brand and the recognition that comes with that. It will hopefully bring added custom simply because they are

We’ll do the rest by delivering an unbeatable local service... Other advantages of course include the fact that we can realise savings on stock outgoings being part of a bigger group and we can also shout about our success and re-launch with a new story. Hopefully with the help of the local press. It’s all good for business and demonstrates that we’re still here! What are your ambitions as a new Kodak Express store? The critical objective for every business is to stay in business and make a profit. High streets and retailers have had a tough time recently simply because the emergence of new technology has changed consumer behaviour.

interview

It’s so easy to stay away from the shops now and buy everything from the comfort of your own home. Based on that my ambition is to turn a 20th century business into a thriving 21st century solution. I want to reignite a desire and a need to get people back into the local shops. Mainly mine! With the help and support of Kodak and Tetenal I genuinely believe we can achieve this. You can’t get a haircut online, and good luck buying that new pair of shoes without trying them on. Retailers need to be thinking about that every time they try and sell anything in their shops. It’s the ‘so what?’ factor, I guess. If we can’t always beat online offers on price what added value can we offer a customer who comes into the shop? Based on that, my ambition for the store is to be perceived as an established, trusted service on the high street whilst retaining the independent, personal feel that the local community has enjoyed up to now. I think if we stick to these core principles, we’ll still be here in ten years time. And

you never know, there might be more shops to talk about by then too... ’Store owner James has a wealth of experience within the industry and photographic retailing environment. The excellent print quality and customer service provided to his customers is a testament to this. The strong local presence of Ferndown Photographic coupled with James’ solid foundation of photographic expertise and flair for innovation, makes Ferndown Photographic a natural choice to join the Kodak Express family and I am delighted to welcome them on board.’’ Abbie Nichols, Kodak Express Business Manager, Tetenal.

Driven by Digital Concensus of opinion in the printing community forecasts the prevalence of digital by 2015

Printers are showing “unprecedented levels of optimism” about their potential for growth and about what they are able to produce, signaling a resurgence in the large format print market worldwide. Over half of the 250 printers surveyed by Infotrends in Summer 2013 reported that wide format digital now represents more than a third of their revenue. In two years’ time, 72% of respondents expect this to be the case, with 54% forecasting half their business to come from digital, and almost a third anticipating that digital will make up one third of their income. The respondents to the survey spanned 53 countries. Solvent and aqueous inkjet continue to dominate the installed base among those surveyed, with 48% and 43% of printers respectively reporting ownership of these technologies. However, eco solvent, UV curable and latex printing are gaining ground. The proportion of work produced using UV curable inkjet is forecast by the community to grow from 13.6% now to 21% by 2015, contrasted with a drop from 18% to 13% for solvent UV.

14 InPrint

“Solvent and aqueous inkjet continue to dominate the installed base among those surveyed, with 48% and 43% of printers respectively reporting ownership of these technologies” This focus on digital is creating a positive mood towards technology investment. Buying intentions are stronger than at any time since 2007, with 51% of respondents planning to purchase a new digital wide format printer in the next year, up from 37% in 2010. Evolving technologies are stimulating demand, with almost a third planning to invest in UV inkjet, 16% in eco-solvent and 13% in latex.

Buyer demands drive investment plans More than half of those planning to invest are doing so to achieve faster output, proving that productivity is still a key factor for printers. This reflects the fact that faster turnaround and just-in-time delivery remain the two dominant trends among customer demands. More than two-thirds of printers say these trends prevail among their customers. Other notable buyer trends are that 57% of printers now say their customers are demanding delivery to the point of need, while 48% report more complex logistics requirements. These responses potentially point to an opportunity for printers to extend their service proposition and offer a more complete print-to-installation service.

Integration of print with other communication channels is clearly taking hold, with 49% saying that customers are looking for more integration with other media, and 42% citing demand for cross media devices to connect print with online media. New applications fuel growth Banners (71%), posters (55%) and signs (53%) remain the top three applications being produced. However, textiles, POP, wallpaper/interiors, building wraps and ‘industrial’ applications are the fastest growing. 81% of printers report handling more textile work, followed by 71% for POP, 69% for wallpaper, 68% for building wraps, and 67% for industrial print.

focus 81% of output is currently on flexible media, but 27% of planned hardware investments are being made with a view to printing onto rigid substrates, suggesting that this media mix will change in the foreseeable future, as POP, interior and industrial applications gain ground. FESPA CEO Neil Felton comments: “Feedback from our community affirms that the transition to digital continues to shape the wide format signage and graphics sector, while digital technology also motivates printers to diversify into creative applications for customers from many different verticals.

“The transition to digital continues to shape the wide format signage and graphics sector, while digital technology also motivates printers to diversify” “What’s exciting for us is that the responses indicate a level of optimism unprecedented since 2007, a year before the global economic crisis. It’s clear that innovation and the pursuit of new application opportunities are giving entrepreneurs increased confidence in the performance of their own businesses - which promises to give FESPA Digital 2014 in Munich a positive and forwardthinking vibe.” www.capv.com

Your Essential Guide to the Latest Launches GMG OpenColor 1.1 GMG OpenColor 1.1 is designed to enable brands and packaging press specialist to accurately predict spot colours. The use of multi-color printing and the increasing complexity of jobs that use different combinations of inks, substrates and screening, amongst other variables, is a continuing trend in package printing, Consequently, one of the critical challenges facing Brand Solutions and Packaging Prepress providers is the ability to accurately and reliably communicate color throughout the entire supply chain - from the brand manager to the printer. Until now, to accurately communicate a mix of colors, every combination would require a specific test chart showing the different combinations - a costly process that involves color fingerprint charts,

the making of plates, and lengthy testing. GMG OpenColor resolves this complex packaging problem and provides highly accurate color profiles, with less information. By using OpenColor, users avoid printing combinations of overprints. They just print single color patches – e.g. color control strips – and combine the color and substrate properties within the software. The new GMG OpenColor 1.1 offers powerful data import functionality that automatically averages data, which is especially helpful when importing data collected at different press run times. As a result, any possible deviation is included in the final profile calculation. The OpenColor 1.1 is available now through certified GMG OpenColor dealers

does the SureColor SC-F6000 deliver on performance, cost, reliability and flexibility, it also opens up new revenue streams for customers. Yr Store’s live garment print installations in Liberty and Topman are a perfect example of how Epson technology is assisting users to develop their creative ideas to expand their businesses further.”
