Fujifilm Bursts €30k Water-Charity Target Fujiiflm has raised €65,025 in the first 12 months of its initiative with WaterAid, the international charity dedicated to enabling the world’s poorest communities to access safe water and sanitation. The result is more than double the original target of €30,000 due to the growing popularity of Fujifilm’s Brillia HD PRO-T3 plates.
Harman Unaffected by Ilford Bankruptcy On the news that Ilford (the paper company, as distinct from the film company with the same name) faces bankruptcy, Peter Elton, managing director at Harman technology Limited, based in Cheshire, said: “Although I’m saddened to learn of the difficulties faced by Ilford Imaging Switzerland, I can confirm that Harman technology Ltd is in no way commercially connected to this business. “Any developments at
Ilford Imaging Switzerland GmbH will have no impact on Harmamtechnology Limited and its products and services. We remain committed to providing traditional black and white Ilford Photo products and our business continues to thrive. “I can report that Harman technology Limited is in excellent financial health with exciting plans in place to enable us to continue achieving our ambitious growth targets.”
Fujifilm has been donating a percentage of the sales of every square metre of Brillia HD PRO-T3 plates sold in Europe, Middle East & Africa over the last 12 months. The nominated charity was WaterAid, to reflect the fact that PRO-T3 completely eliminates the water used in the conventional plate production process. Through its donations, Fujifilm has been able to help WaterAid transform the lives of people
in some of the world’s poorest communities by providing access to safe, clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

news feature Latent Light Expands into Consumer Market Building on Latent Light’s successful partnership with Canon UK, the company has invested in a second Canon imagePRESS - the C7000VP to expand into the B2C market. Aiming to double the size of its business over the coming year, the Bristol-based photo-print service provider will use the new machine to meet increasing demand for high-quality photobooks and expand its business with a new consumer facing offering, photogifts.co.uk. The imagePRESS C7000VP a 1200 x 1200 dpi digital colour production printer that runs up to 70 pages per minute provides Latent Light’s existing imagePRESS C6000VP with support during peak production times. The company can now offer even faster turnaround for short-run, print-on-demand and customised print jobs. The new brand offers high quality personalised photo gifts that consumers can easily create online, with products ranging from canvas prints and books to mouse mats and chopping boards. Adam Gildersleeve, Managing Director of Latent Light says: “We have a clear idea of where we currently are in the market and where we want to be. We needed to find the right print solution to deliver the quality,
consistency and speed required to grow our business. We considered our options, but our search for quality and service led us back to Canon. We had been so impressed by our existing imagePRESS - nothing in the market comes close to the high quality and consistency it achieves - that we needed little persuasion to add the C7000VP.” Over the last decade, Gildersleeve has seen his company transform from a sideline project based in a spare room, into a serious business venture operating from a 1,160 sqm state-of-theart production unit in Bristol. Gildersleeve concludes: “From the outset, Canon has worked closely with us to lay the foundations for long term
growth. They understand the problems we have faced and have been realistic about how to solve them, exploring all available options with us and providing expert advice on how to get the best out of their solutions.” Mark Lawn, European and UK Marketing Director, Canon Europe, comments: “As a company, Latent Light are demonstrating that there are significant opportunities out there for print service providers to grow their business. Our focus at Canon is to develop business partnerships like this one where, by providing the insight, technology and support to guide customers towards profitable new revenue streams, we’re helping them to see the bigger picture.”

WISH YOU WERE THERE? There’s no need to miss our if you missed FESPA. We have the low-down! FESPA’s move to London for 2013 delivered the event’s most globally diverse visitor audience to date, with almost two-thirds of visitors to the flagship event coming from outside the UK. The FESPA 2013 and European Sign Expo audience was dominated by senior decision makers, with an unprecedented 71.3% of visitors having input to purchasing decisions, and half having ultimate purchasing responsibility. With over 22000 individual visitors checking in to London’s ExCeL exhibition centre over the five days of the FESPA event, the event exceeded Munich 2010. With almost half of those choosing to spend more than one day at the show, bringing total attendance to 37,460 visits. London’s global status as a business hub made for significant increases in long-haul attendance from Australasia and North America compared
with the last main FESPA event in Munich, Germany in 2010. Visitors from Sub-Saharan Africa doubled compared with 2010, reinforcing the strong rationale for the launch – announced the day before FESPA 2013 - of FESPA Africa, Johannesburg, July 2014. Altogether, visitors from beyond Europe constituted almost 15% of the total event audience. FESPA managing director Neil Felton commenteds, “The exhibitors I’ve spoken to here at FESPA have been absolutely delighted with the breadth of international visitors, and stands throughout both halls here at ExCeL have been buzzing. Significant product launches in many areas have given visitors plenty of new technology to explore, while our visitor features have attracted printers looking for guidance on how to take their business in new directions.”

Key Exhibitors share their thoughts on FESPA 2013 and the move to London “FESPA was a great show for HP. For the first time, FESPA visitors from all over Europe were able to see the new HP Latex 3000 Printer in the flesh and witness its benefits first hand. The HP Scitex FB10000, also saw huge interest. Demonstrating its leadership in the Sign and Display market, FESPA again provided a show to meet the needs of manufacturers, print service providers and brands today.” Manel Martinez, Vice President & General Manager Graphics Solutions Business, EMEA, HP. “Ideally located at ExCeL in London, FESPA 2013 proved to be a vibrant show in a dynamic city. FESPA is a synonym for creativity - a value we wanted to pay homage to with the students’ aquarium to show the industry how easily Mimaki solutions can print out even the most creative of ideas. A true crowd-pleaser, because our booth has been buzzing with excitement from visitors looking for the latest of the newest in terms of wide format, industrial and textile printing” Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing EMEA, Mimaki Europe “It’s been a great show for us. We’ve seen a good flow of visitors to the stand from across Europe and Worldwide and lots of interest in the products on show. There’s been a really good vibe at FESPA 2013 and it’s shown the optimism people have in the future of the industry.” Gillian Montanaro, Head of Marketing & Market Development, Roland DG (UK) Ltd “For Canon Europe, FESPA 2013 was all about inspiring print service providers, providing industry insight and demonstrating how our new technologies can open doors in terms of application diversity and the potential for business growth. This was our debut appearance at a FESPA event and the first time we have demonstrated our full graphic arts portfolio. The enthusiasm of visitors to the stand was reflected in the number of orders we received
during the show – which greatly exceeded our expectations – and the number of leads we are now following up on.” Anne-Marie van der Laan, Marketing Manager, TDS & DGS, Canon Europe Ltd “We sold seven systems in the first three days to companies across Europe. The general volumes across the show were as expected, but the Uvistar deals were really pleasing. The show was more international than we thought!” Graham Leeson, Head of Communications, Fujifilm Europe “We’ve had a good show and sold more than a few printers. It’s been exemplary on an international level. FESPA is one of a few opportunities to show case AnaJet’s propositions to the market and enables us to have contact with international visitors that we couldn’t usually have contact with.” Tim Bellante, AnaJet “The Natgraph team has returned from FESPA 2013, exhausted but elated. The show was more successful than we ever imagined, with three surprise machine orders, several on-going projects confirmed and many, many new technical enquiries from all over the world. “Orders for equipment from New Zealand, Greece and the UK were a bonus to the non-stop activity on the stand.”- Alan Shaw, Commercial Director, Natgraph “FESPA 2013 has been an overwhelming success for Kornit Digital. Our Sales and Marketing targets for the show were exceeded by far. It seems that FESPA has found the way to create a unique brand and experience while so many other shows and events are struggling with market conditions and an overcapacity in the tradeshow industry. FESPA makes a difference and we will return for sure!” – Oliver Luedtke, Marketing Manager, Kornit Digital Europe “The best show we have ever had!” Liuba Noskina, Marketing and Communications, Marabu

DISPLAY MAKERS UK LTD EXPANDED THE ISOFRAME RANGE WITH FRESH NEW IDEAS AT FESPA. This system is designed for ultimate portability, however the ISOframe way solves problems with speed and longevity that are associated with traditional fabric systems. The unique patented clamp and all-metal framework ensures that the fabric never moves. The graphics are printed directly onto large fabric panels, making it possible to roll or fold them up smaller than regular rollable graphics. The fabric easily attaches to the ISOframe structure with silicone edging which wraps into a new channel in the framework. The unique continuous channel gives the customer a choice whether to have several smaller panels or one full stand length panel for their design. It can be used to clad shells or can hold freestanding shapes and can also be backlit and accessorized with literature holders.
ELVAJET GETS ECO-FRIENDLY Sensient Imaging Technologies used Fespa to launch the ElvaJet Alpha platform: a unique method of digital printing directly onto polyester fabric, based on innovative waterbased inks, which reduces the environmental impact of textile printing without compromising on the quality of the printed product. The inks developed under this platform offer superior color vibrancy and through print. ElvaJet Alpha inks can be applied directly onto virtually any polyester textile, being fixed only with dry heat. With the use of ElvaJet Alpha inks, there is no washing or other finishing step needed.
AN ALL-ROUND SUCCESS Azonprinter’s new A2 UV model was a huge success from the first day at Fespa, attracting visitors from all around the world. DESIGNED BY PROS, FOR PROS Zünd displayed the Cut Centre (ZCC) user interface and workflow suite – a tool for pros, designed by pros. It is the perfect complement to Zünd cutting systems and supports every aspect of the digital cutting process—guaranteeing an optimal workflow, exceptional quality, and productivity. Zünd Cut Center is geared for preparing and processing cutter-ready digital cut files. Files from all widely-used RIPs and nesting programs can be processed without going through any additional file preparation. Consequently, ZCC
integrates effortlessly in any production workflow and interactively guides the user through every phase of production finishing. Another innovative feature is the tandem vacuum system. This material-handling option allows for efficient loading of sheets and boards while the machine continues producing. The operator places or removes material on one side, while cutting continues on the other. This tandem setup increases the efficiency of the workflow, keeps idle time to a minimum, and provides maximum productivity.
A VIVID ADDITION
THE NEXT STEP FOR J-TECK
Vivid Laminating Technologies used FESPA for the world premiere of its newest addition to their popular Matrix laminating system printing hardware range. The Matrix MX530 Duplex is a modular variant which retrofits to the MX-530, allowing printers to laminate both sides of a printed sheet at the same time. Product Manager Bruce Cozens explains, “We’ve designed the new system to save digital and litho printers even more time, literally halving the time it takes to laminate two sides of the sheet. We wanted to build on the buzz created by the Auto-Feeder introduction by now offering an upgraded model to the enduser. The Matrix is now the best-selling single sided laminating system in Europe and we’re confident that with the new model, it can also take the crown for double sided-systems too”.
J-Teck3 used Fespa to launch its new dye sublimation product J-CUBE RF40/KF40, especially developed for Ricoh and Kyocera printing heads. J-CUBE represents a new line in the digital textile printing panorama as it meets the market demand for a high quality product suitable for the new water-based printing systems. These products are particularly dedicated to industrial printing applications, requiring very stable and faster drying inks. J-CUBE it has been formulated according to J-Teck’s “Cluster Technology”. allowing for utmost stability and fluidity. Born from research carried out by J-Teck’s during the past year, it is now ready to approach the worldwide market in both versions, RF for Ricoh and KF for Kyocera in CMYK colours. J-NEXT SUBLY JXS65, the first digital dye sublimation ink for DX6-DX7 printing heads, was launched by J-Teck at FESPA 2011and has since become market leader and bestseller among the dye sublimation ink for Epson printing heads.

REAL “MAGIC” SHIRTS At Fespa 2013 TheMagicTouch introduced a new and innovative way to view designs and images printed on T-Shirts and promotional products using “Augmented Reality” technology. The company has for over 20 years pioneered the digital image transfer process, offering a range of transfer papers for full colour decoration of garments, textiles and a vast range of promotional items. This year the company wanted to show something different and fun. Jim Nicol, Managing Director, explains “AR technology can best be described as a QR code on steroids! It offers the user a unique experience whilst viewing a printed design and really adds a new dimension to the promotions and garment decoration industry” So how does it work? At the show the company printed approx 900 shirts over the 5 days featuring a bespoke design printed using the WoW transfer paper that contained an embedded code. The code is unlocked when read using a downloadable app from a smart phone or tablet device, launching instantly into the bespoke video message and interactive visual. The message was specially prepared for the Fespa show and features Bareck Obama, David Cameron and a host of other TMT
supporters. The AR technology also allows the user to update the video content extending the life of the product over a longer period. MAKING LIFE EASIER FOR GRAPHICS PROS New HP Designjet ePrinters unveiled at FESPA improve user experience for architecture, engineering, construction and design professionals. Design professionals are more mobile than ever, moving among offices, job sites and airports. Additionally, the design process is highly collaborative, taking place between different teams across different time zones. The new HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinter series are designed to help busy workgroups complete work efficiently and meet deadlines by THINK INK Bordeaux Digital Printink, a global inkjet ink solutions manufacturer, invited Fespa visitors to see the launch of the most innovative technology developments in Bordeaux’s portfolio at FESPA London The new series purports to be the most reliable, environmentally friendly ink in the market meaning it requires less heat and is odorless, free of volatile organic compounds and is an affordable, low cost option for Latex printing, without having to buy a new machine. printing correctly from the start with true print previews and delivering fast, high-quality prints. Additionally, these devices help users to access, view and print projects from the cloud so they can collaborate easily with remote teams. HP designed the 36-inch devices based on extensive engagement with users early in the development process. Users proposed designs that addressed the pain points they suffer before, during and after the printing process. From this input, HP also identified an output tray and true front-roll media loading as key areas for enhancement amongst many more improvements. FUJIFILM REVEALLATEST OFFERINGS IN HUGE AND INSPIRING DISPLAY AT FESPA The latest addition to the Inca Onset series, the Inca Onset Q40i was on show for the first time. DNP Finalise Rebranding of Photo Activities
Slowly but surely DNP have completed the rebranding of their photo activities. Head of European Marketing Mark Buelow explains what Fotolusio will stand for in the future For the past two and a half years, DNP Photo Imaging Europe changed its face radically. With the acquisition of the photofinishing business of Sony and the substantial addition in distribution power came the drive to reposition the brand. As a strong asset, the DNP trademark was put stronger in the focus in the communications, whether on brochures, advertisement or at exhibitions such as the photokina 2012. Over 137 years of experience in the printing industry pay off with good brand recognition and allow the photo business to be easily recognised for high-quality products and production expertise. At the same time the global and regional marketing teams aimed to reposition also the Fotolusio sub-brand. It had originally been created to represent the photo activities, and with the new strategy, will now serve DNP as a sub-brand and quality indicator for the dyesublimation media. DNP have redesigned their printer and media products to follow this direction. The printer series DS40, DS80 and DS-RX1 will carry only the DNP brand together with the
The new strategy will now serve DNP as a sub-brand and quality indicator for the dye-sublimation media product name (same as the SnapLabTM DSSL20 and the ID photo system DS-ID400). The media lines for DS-RX1 will carry the Fotolusio logo with the category “Digital”, while media for the flagship models DS40 and DS80 will be carrying the mark “Premium Digital”. “The repositioning of the photo activities under the DNP brand has been a rewarding experience”, says Mark Buelow, Head of European Marketing. “Together with my colleagues in the United States, in Japan and other overseas regions we have pushed for the logo of DNP to get stronger visibility.” Early on DNP began to put communication material out

featuring this change in appearance. Now the results are coming through in the products being fully rebranded. Everything from hardware to photo consumables was considered and had to be redesigned, including product boxes, manuals, websites and more. “The feedback to this change from partners is very positive, and they appreciate also the repositioned sub-brand to give a quality indicator of Fotolusio to our photo consumables.” For the future DNP is well set up for further strong growth, with solid partnerships in European distributors and system integrators. In a difficult economic and business environment, DNP aims to be the reliable partner for the industry with good opportunities for growth and prosperity.

focus New Revenue Stream for Wedding & Event Photographers A smart way to earn money with the vast amount of snapshots from smartphones and tablets, DNP’s intelligent system is ideal for wedding & event photographers. With modern mobile applications, consumers can directly send their images to the Party Print system installed at the venue and take home great souvenirs Wide availability of digital capture devices result in an ever-increasing number of photos uploaded to social networks – 7.5bn new photos appear on Facebook each and every month. Where do those images come from? Both Futuresource Consulting and Flickr, the number one photo gallery in the world, speak a clear language: Many come from smartphones! They are with us at all times, their cameras are sufficient in quality to be viewed online, and most importantly, these devices are unbeatable in terms of sharing pictures. The connectivity to the internet- be it their Facebook page or other means of sharing – enable a quick delivery to friends and family. With this abundance of everyday memories, we still see that the experts of photography are missing out on a good potential business. The product planners of DNP have sat down to develop a method to both offer an innovative service to the consumer and a good additional source of income for professional photographers. DNP Party Print, the new mobile application-based product of DNP Photo Imaging Europe, ticks all the boxes: it opens up the reach of event photographers to offer a great and fun service to events. It’s a solution to all wedding couples who never in the past saw
the guests’ snapshots, and it’s a nice extra for corporate or social events. Offering a snapshot photo service is a great complimentary service to the professional portraits. For the guests, it’s a fun way to retain printed memories from special moments. Usually the majority of snapshots ends up on the memory of the camera phones, but never makes it to any other output device. Some photographers bring it online. Now it’s time to share these prints also during the party, and bring them home as souvenirs. DNP Party Print is compatible with all modern PCs and supports output on DNP printers DS40, DS-RX1 and DS80 for standard formats 10x15cm up to 20x30cm. The setup on location is very space-saving as you just install the laptop or PC and a printer, so can be done in any corner or even behind a counter. The recommended business model for event photographers is to rent out the system including a sufficient set of photo consumables for a fixed price, so the investment can be amortised in just a few evening events. It consists of the user-friendly installer software (CD-ROM) and a wireless router. The mobile application for iOS and Android-based tablets and smartphones is available to consumers free of charge in App Stores and Google Play across Europe www.dnpphoto.eu

An Interactive Revolution Cewe have brought new features to the market which may just be the stepping stone the UK trade needs to get consumers into photobooks
With the UK still lagging behind other European countries such as Germany in terms of photobook sales, any drive for further popularity is bound to be welcomed. Cewe’s expertise across the European market has put them in a unique position to assess what will encourage a broader audience to take a look at photobooks, and two new developments are sure to do just that. Capturing Video Makers If there was one area in which printed products fell short for today’s imaging consumer, it had to be the area of video. With so many now enjoying filmmaking on their camera or phone, photo products including albums and books seemed doomed to miss out on this growing section of the market. Enter Cewe, with their new software that allows consumers to embed video into their photobook. the duplicates… the readily edited, beautifully Using an innovative tool, videos are displayed presented photobook is ready to show the right as a film strip on a page, indicating that there’s videos in the right places. a video to go with the image. Alongside many new design templates, clip art and styles, the CEWE photobook software also offers new functionality and design options. 3D photos in MPO (Multi picture object) and JPS (JPEG stereo) formats can be processed to automatically create a 3D image, which is another way these books are keeping up with consumer image capture trends. Cewe have also brought to market the ability to create a CEWE Photobook on the move! VERITEK ACQUIRED IN £11M BUY-OUT Jim Edgar, Managing Director, and Jonathan Briant, Finance Director, of Veritek Global Ltd, the Eastbourne-based provider of outsourced technical services, have led a successful management buy-out of the company with funding provided by Mobeus Equity Partners LLP. Veritek provides European wide installation, maintenance and support services for blue-chip owners of a wide range of complex imaging equipment. The company has revenues in excess of £25m and employs c. 300 staff across ten countries. It operates in the photographic, healthcare, ophthalmic, graphics and digital cinema markets. The company plans to expand its European footprint and continue to broaden its offering into new sectors. Adrian Teulon and Noritsu the original owners of the company, will no longer have any involvement with the business. In a joint statement, Edgar and Briant said: “We are excited by the opportunities in front of us. Mobeus has been a fantastic partner through this process. Having understood the business quickly, they have consistently delivered against tight timeframes and taken a pragmatic approach to what has at times been a complex transaction. We look forward to a long and successful partnership.” Mobeus provided a combined debt and equity-funding package to support the £11m management buy-out of Veritek. Importantly the debt investment is on an interest only basis. This lack of capital repayments reflects Mobeus’ longterm investment strategy and a desire to ensure
that Veritek has significant cash reserves to invest in existing and new customer relationships. Mobeus is introducing Tom Chaloner as a new member to the Veritek Board. While Peter Shawyer, previously managing partner of Deloitte and presently, amongst other positions, Non-Executive Director of HSBC Bank Plc., will join the board as Non-Executive Chairman. Management will however continue to control the operations and drive the business into new markets. Chris Price, Investment Director at Mobeus, commented “We are delighted to have been able to support Jim and Jonathan in their acquisition of Veritek. Veritek is a superbly managed business with an exciting future ahead of it as it increasingly diversifies its business into areas such as healthcare and graphics. We are confident that our flexible debt and equity solution will enable the team to take advantage of these growth opportunities and enable Veritek to become the leading service and maintenance supplier to the European imaging market.”
