Welcome
Time for some winter sun? Autumn is well and truly here, and I love it. Splashing in puddles, crunching through leaves and collecting conkers are the stuff childhood songs are made of, for good reason in my opinion. However, as I watch the rest of the Ocean View team shiver miserably in their welly boots, I am reminded that not everybody enjoys the colder months and that perhaps some sunnier reading material is in order! So, without further ado please let Ocean View take you on a cruise around the Carribbean... only an imaginary one, unfortunately, but it starts on page 42. Whilst we would love to give every one of our readers a free cruise, unfortunately it’s slightly outside our budget! We can, however, offer a number of lucky readers little treats like gadgets, accessories, CDs and of course free subscriptions to Ocean View! If you’re feeling energetic, or are at least in the mood to read about those who are, we’re kicking off this issue with one of the year’s most exciting yacht races, the bigger and better than ever Transat Jacques Vabre. The new course sounds very exciting - and challenging, so yachting fans will not want to miss this one! As always, we’ve also got this month’s pick of recipes, gadgets to keep you connected whilst you’re on your travels and other stories to dip into. Relax, keep warm and enjoy your especially sunny Ocean View.

A Race to Remember

he event is a defining highlight for the city of Le Havre and for the Mondelēz International Group, which join together as hosts from 25th October when the four classes - the MOD70 and Multi50 multihulls and IMOCA and Class 40 monohulls – gather, making ready for the 5400 miles course which takes the fleet, for the first time, to the new destination city of Itajaí in southern Brazil. The race has attracted 45 teams of two co-skippers who between them represent 12 different nations across the four different classes. The race starts on Sunday November 3rd under Le Havre’s famous cliffs of Saint Adresse, when all the classes race a coastal course to Etretat. From there, the course takes them direct, non-stop to Brazil. The Monohulls, that is 26 Class 40s and 10 IMOCAs, programme in their course direct for the finish line, whilst the six Multi50s and three MOD70s return temporarily to the Basin Paul Vatine to await their starts on November 5th and 8th respectively for the same 5,400 miles course. The course offers a range of challenges right from the very opening miles, including the notorious escape from the Channel. There is then the passage across Biscay, which is bound never to be
“The City of Itajaí is relishing its new found role as finish port for the Transat Jacques Vabre and is set to lay on a spectacular welcome for the arriving teams and visitors, with a range exhibitions, shows, gastronomy displays, musical concerts and much more” easy in November, then it is down to the Canaries on to the vagaries of the ICTZ… or the Doldrums, as they are most usually known… then dealing with the St Helena high pressure area and the Bay of Rio de Janeiro, finally into waters which for most will be new as the final miles into Itajaí can be tricky too. After race finishes previously in Colombia (Cartagena), Brazil (Salvador), Costa Rica (Puerto Limon), the Transat Jacques Vabre now returns to Brazil, but this time this finish is much further south in Itajaí, which will add interest to the
very end, since the weather patterns down the Brazilian coast are often difficult to decipher and use to best effect. Jandir Belini, Mayor of Itajai said: “The state of Santa Catarina and the City of Itajaí are facing the sea and the maritime sector. We are ready to welcome you all to the finish of the Transat Jacques Vabre with a big party. We expect more than 300,000 visitors to be there to welcome you.” The City of Itajaí is relishing its new found role as finish port for the Transat Jacques Vabre and is set to lay on a spectacular welcome for the arriving teams and visitors, with a range exhibitions, shows, gastronomy displays, musical concerts and much more, running right through from November 16th to December 7th. The first crews are expected to finish around 19th November. Among the most successful skippers, to take on this edition, is Jean-Pierre Dick who has won the IMOCA monohull division a remarkable three times, in 2003-2005 and 2011. He pairs up with the equally redoubtable Roland Jourdain who has won twice, in 1995 and 2001, but this time they will race a multihull, the MOD70 VirbacPaprec 70. The entire field is richly laden with talent, including Vendée Globe winners François Gabart , Michel Desjoyeaux and Vincent

There are multihull specialists such Yves Le Blévec in the Multi 50 with Kito de Pavant, Erwan Le Roux racing with the winner of the Solitaire du Figaro Yann Elies, Loïc Fequet, Gilles Lamiré or Lalou Roucayrol. For those ten days, from 26 October to 3 November, Le Havre’s Basin Paul Vatine is completely transformed into an entertainment venue commensurate by the size and scale of this event, reflecting the interests of the sponsors, sailors and the city. Edouard Philippe, Deputy Mayor of Le Havre commented: “The Transat Jacques Vabre and Le Havre join in a nautical tradition of hospitality, a tradition that has also led to the emergence of a true Le Havre expertise. In terms of port activities it is a the leading French port for container traffic, and its natural situation with its marina as the most accessible on to the Bay of Seine and all the new opportunities which are presented by the Grand Paris project. Le Havre, the maritime city, has all the components in place to become the flagship
maritime location on the Channel coast. With all that in mind it is of course, with great pleasure, that Le Havre will once again host the Transat Jacques Vabre.” Seminar hosts will include: Patrick Poivre d’Arvor, Véronique Massenot, Marc Pajot, Gilles Lapouge, Charles Berling, there is performance art with Kieff, Raynal, Flahault, Chambon and sailboat racing basin of the Eure and virtual racing, concerts all underpinned by the infectious Brazilian rhythms,. Not to forget coffee tasting with Jacques Vabre, right through to eco-educational workshops, which reflect the ongoing actions and initiatives for sustainable development taken by the city of Le Havre and the whole Jacques Vabre race community. Among the messages being developed are the building of a giant tree in wood, glass and steel “Arboat” symbolises a “tree of Shadows”, also there is the Coffee Made Happy programme run by Jacques Vabre, the brand Mondelēz International Group brand. Clotilde Bednarek, International
Marketing Director Coffee Mondelēz said: “Since 1993, when this great race was established it has embodied the values of our company and of the Jacques Vabre brand: passion, authenticity, pleasure, commitment and taking things to a new level. As well as being a sporting adventure, the Transat Jacques Vabre is a human adventure that links France with the coffee countries, such as Colombia, Costa Rica, and Brazil. The race is a great opportunity to reconnect with coffee’s origins. Mondelēz International is the leader in the French market. It is with particular pleasure and great emotion that I find myself here today to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Transatlantic.” “Take to the sea, act for the earth.” Along with the sporting and the human challenge, the Transat Jacques Vabre is an eco-friendly event. Since 2007, effective measures have been put in place to limit and to offset its carbon footprint, making the event one that everyone can enjoy without being detrimental to the environment. CHANNEL ISLANDS
of England with a dash of French style, absorbing history combined with enjoyable indulgence. Like Guernsey and Jersey, the island enjoys a mild climate and independence, with its own government and a fledgling off-shore finance and e-commerce sector. Guernsey is second-largest of the several Channel Islands located 30 miles west of France’s coast of Normandy and 75 miles south of Weymouth on the south coast of England. At the beginning of steam navigation, the island developed into a hugely popular British holiday destination, due to its climate – warmer and sunnier than the UK- its beautiful beaches, rugged coastline and pastoral scenery that includes the handsome and much-prized Guernsey dairy cows. More recently, the delightful setting and the island’s tax benefits have attracted large numbers of off-island Brits to settle there. While its status is of a British Crown Dependency, the islanders have a good deal of independence, and most visibly to tourists, Guernsey has its own coins, banknotes and stamps. The Channel Islands became a part of the Duchy of Normandy (France) in 933 A.D., but after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when the Dukes of Normandy became the Kings of England, the island became English property. When the English monarchy was restored, the islands did not revert to the French, though there were attempts to make them do so! During modem times, Guernsey’s most difficult period came during World War II, when the British government stated that it would not protect the Channel Islands from invasion and then gave the population a few days to decide to stay or leave. The Germans, who came to occupy the islands, stayed almost five years; by the occupation’s end, the local population and the German soldiers were virtually starving. The Channel Islands were finally liberated some 11 months after the Normandy

landings, which ironically were within sight and sound along the nearby French Coast. The German occupation left many sites that can be visited today, including fortifications, an underground military hospital and an occupation museum. St. Peter Port, the principal town on the island of Guernsey, is a town that beckons visitors down winding streets and leafy alleys, yet its signature landmark -- a fortified castle that sits atop a promontory jutting out into the harbour -- is notable for its more imposing mien. Today, visitors come to enjoy St. Peter Port’s bustling harbour scene, museums and historic attractions, as well as to head out ABOVE: Gorey Harbour, Jersey FAR RIGHT: Display at Castle Cornet Museum RIGHT: La Corbière Lighthouse OCEAN VIEW 21

Enjoy well-appointed bedrooms, an excellent restaurant and outstanding sea views. Alternatively you can camp on Herm Island in one of the modern, well-equipped family size tents or choose to pitch your own tent. The campsite boasts glorious views across to Sark and the French coast. The isle of Sark is the fourth smallest of the islands, located in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, population of only 600, its own set of laws based on Norman law and its own parliament. You can get a small ferry from St Peter Port, Guernsey to Sark in just under 45 minutes. When you get to the island it is
a car-free zone, where the only vehicles allowed are tractors, bikes or horses drawn carriages. The pace of life is relaxed, it’s a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday world, an ideal hideaway to get away from it all. The best way to experience Sark is by bike or horse drawn carriage, which you can rent on the island, you will discover hidden gems including La Seigneurie, the Venus Pool and Adonis Pool, both natural swimming pools whose waters are refreshed at high tide. The views from the coastal headlands are impressive, butterflies, birds and a variety of flowers set against the secluded beaches. Teaming with marine life and clear water, Sark attracts naturalist and fishermen who enjoy peaceful days on the rocks. At night Sark becomes a sanctuary for star gazers. In January 2011, Sark was designated the first Dark Sky Island Community in the world. This recognises that Sark is sufficiently clear of light pollution to allow thousands of bright stars visible with the naked eye, so there’s no need to bring your telescope. The amazing coastal scenery of Sark has become the set of many televison programmes including An Island Parish which follows the Anglican priest and Methodist minister of the island and the detective series, Bergerac, staring John Nettles. There is something for everyone in Sark, but whatever your age you will be captivated by the charming views and the brilliant colouring of the land and seascape. If you are looking for a tranquility, spending your days swimming or walking the many coastal pathways, lush with wildflowers and insects, Sark is the place to stay. There is a wide range of accommodation available, from award-winning hotels and restaurants, to self-catering and campsites and if you do choose to stay in one of the many accommodations there is one essential piece of kit you will need....a torch. www.visitchannelislands.com

With nothing in the fridge apart from half a bottle of wine, you begin wondering how you can dress up a takeaway as a home-cooked meal. Well, fear not, as here is a recipe that delivers maximum flavour using only long-lasting store-cupboard basics and which will be ready in under half an hour. SERVES 4 2 tbsp rice bran oil or vegetable oil 300g frozen prawns 1 red onion, peeled and roughly sliced into thin wedges 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped a 3cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely diced 2 fresh red chillies, deseeded and finely sliced (leave in the seeds if you prefer it hotter) 80g frozen broad beans 80g frozen peas 80g drained water chestnuts, roughly chopped 350g straight-to-wok thick udon noodles 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tsp fish sauce lime juice, to serve optional: sweet chilli sauce, to serve Heat half of the oil in a wok over a medium to high heat. When hot, add the prawns and fry for 2–3 minutes, stirring every now and then, until they have defrosted and turned a delicious coral colour (they won’t be fully cooked at this point). Tip the prawns on to a plate and wipe your wok clean with kitchen roll. Heat the remaining oil in the wok over a medium to high heat. Once hot, fry the onion for 1 minute before adding the garlic, ginger and chillies. Stir-fry for a further minute and then return the half-cooked prawns to the wok. Heat through for 1–2 minutes and then add the beans and peas. Stir-fry the whole lot for a further 2–3 minutes until everything is heated through. Add the remaining ingredients apart from the lime juice and sweet chilli sauce and toss together until well combined. Don’t even mess around plating up this dish, just place the wok in the middle of the table with the lime wedges and chilli sauce, if using, alongside and revel in the eating-induced silence that is sure to fall over your friends.

Duck and Wasabi Coleslaw Buns I’m a self-confessed bun junkie. Little parcels stuffed full of goodies remind me of my childhood. Most Sundays you’d find my whole family packed into my auntie’s restaurant, chowing down bun after bun. Asian buns are the equivalent of the English sandwich and this is my fiery take on everyone’s favourite salad, coleslaw.
“Asian buns are the equivalent of the English sandwich and this is my fiery take on everyone’s favourite salad, coleslaw”
SERVES 4 4 skinless duck legs 6 tbsp hoisin sauce 2 heaped tbsp light mayonnaise 2 tsp wasabi 1 tsp rice wine vinegar 400g white cabbage, cored and finely shredded 2 fresh red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped (leave the seeds in if you prefer it hotter) 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced 2 carrots, peeled and finely sliced into matchsticks ½cucumber, peeled, deseeded and finely diced 1 x quantity of steamed buns to serve
Preheat the oven to 190°C/375˚F/Gas mark 5. Cover the duck legs as thoroughly as possible with half of the hoisin sauce. Place the coated legs on a baking tray lined with baking paper and cook in the oven for 25 minutes, by which time they should have darkened slightly in colour and be completely cooked through. Remove from the oven and leave to cool to room temperature. Meanwhile, mix together the mayonnaise, wasabi and vinegar. The mayonnaise should turn a satisfying light green colour. Place the shredded cabbage, chillies, spring onions and carrots in a bowl. Dollop on the fiery mayonnaise and mix until all of the vegetables are lightly coated. Use your fingers or a couple of forks to pull the meat from the duck legs. Fill the buns with duck, coleslaw, cucumber and the remaining hoisin sauce. It will get messy.

Mango and Lemon Grass Sorbet What could be more refreshing than a mango sorbet at the end of a summer’s evening meal? I’ll tell you what: a mango and lemon grass sorbet! The lemon grass ekes out a few more percentiles of delicious mango flavour. YUM.
SERVES 8 250ml water 4 stalks of lemon grass, outside husk removed, halved and bashed zest of 3 limes 300g caster sugar 5 ripe mangoes, peeled and stoned
Pour the water into a saucepan and add the bashed lemon grass, lime zest and sugar. Bring the mixture to the boil, stirring a couple of times along the way, until all of the caster sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat and leave the mixture to infuse for at least 2 hours. Roughly dice the mangoes and place in a blender. Sieve the infused sugar syrup over the mango pieces and blitz the mixture to a purée. Discard the lemon grass and lime zest. Pour the liquid into a container with a lid and freeze for a minimum of 6 hours, or preferably overnight. Serve scoops of your refreshing sorbet with glasses of Champagne for a decadently delicious dessert.

Beautiful Belize
Ocean View accompanies CruiseCritic.com’s Jodi Thompson on her tour of this Caribbean gem
Even including the numerous small islands off the coast, known as cayes, Belize is the second smallest country in Central America after El Salvador. A nature-lover’s paradise, more than half of the mainland is covered with dense forests, and as a strong advocate of environmental protection, the government has set aside approximately 20 percent of its land as nature reserves. Belize is well known for being a touristfriendly, reasonably-priced destination, offering some of the best diving in the Caribbean. It also continues to increase in popularity as a cruise destination and is often included as one of the ports of call on Western Caribbean itineraries. Diving is Belize’s main claim to fame due to an almost unbroken line of reefs and cayes extending for 150 miles along its coast, that make up the longest reef system in the western hemisphere (and the second longest in the world). While many cayes are tiny and uninhabited, some like Ambergris Caye are sufficiently large to have built resorts that attract divers from around the world. In ancient times, the Mayans believed that caves were the “underworld” and were revered as sacred places. Options for exploring the network of caves include tubing or by kayak or canoe. Some of the tubing is at a place known as “Jungle Paw,” where they float
“Diving is Belize’s main claim to fame due to an almost unbroken line of reefs and cayes extending for 150 miles along its coast that make up the longest reef system in the western hemisphere” through a series of caves in an inner tube which lasts about two hours. Several important Mayan sites on the mainland, such as Altun Ha and Xunantunich, make for excellent day trips and are included on shore excursions by most cruise ships. As a matter of fact, Belize has the highest concentration of Mayan sites of all the countries in Central America. Among the best of Belize’s Mayan sites is Altun Ha, a heavily excavated site that is a convenient day trip out of the city. Once a major trading and ceremonial centre, it consists of several impressive temples and tombs, highlighted by the Temple of the

Masonry Altars. Another important site is Xunantunich, located near the Guatemalan border, that can only be reached by crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry. Situated here are six major plazas, ringed by more than 25 temples and palaces; largest of the remaining temples is Il Castilo which is worth climbing for the spectacular panoramic view from the top. For the ultimate in R&R at the beach, head to Caye Caulker, a 45-minute ferry ride from the Marine Terminal. Just five miles long and one mile wide, laid-back Caye Caulker is ideal for sun worshipping on one of its gorgeous beaches. There are no cars here so everyone rides around either in golf carts or on bicycles which can be rented by the hour or for the day. Divers can hop boats that go out to the barrier reef just 10 minutes away. Number one on the hit parade of favourite outdoor activities due to the astounding sites along the barrier reef. Some of the best dive sites lie just off Ambergris Caye. Charter operators offer day trips that include transportation. However, you get to Ambergris Caye, head for the main town of San Pedro, where many of the dive operators are clustered. For a list of local dive shops see Diving on Ambergris Caye. A favourite snorkelling area is known as Shark Ray Alley (one hour by speedboat from San Pedro) where it’s possible to get “up close and personal” (petting is permitted) with nurse sharks and sting rays. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a three-square-mile dive site. The Belize Zoo has more than 125 animals, all native to Belize, and the islands are a birder’s delight as Belize is home to more than 500 different species from toucans to egrets. Two highly recommended ways to encounter birdlife is on a guided boat trip to the Little Guana Caye Bird Sanctuary and the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. www.cruisecritic.com

One of the true pioneers of luxury accommodation in Belize and a beachfront oasis of tranquillity, Victoria House is located just two miles south of picturesque San Pedro Town.
Belize is known for its natural, unspoiled beauty and welcoming people, and Victoria House is the perfect location to experience all of this while visiting Ambergris Caye. Set amongst lush, tropical gardens and overlooking the barrier reef, less than a mile offshore, the ambiance is one of relaxation, privacy and understated, barefoot luxury. Day trips to the Great Blue Hole, jungle-shrouded Mayan archaeological sites or cave-tubing tours may be easily arranged on-site at the Fantasea Watersports diveshop, and most trips leave from our own private dock. Likewise, half day or whole day diving, snorkelling or fishing excursions are offered. We work with some of the best guides on the island and if fishing is your thing you may be bringing home dinner or poling after the abundant bonefish that inhabit the quiet waters on the lee of the island. A lazy day (and don’t forget to leave time for a couple of these – it’s a holiday after all!) might involve sunbathing and lunching around one of our swimming pools with a cold, refreshing beverage close at hand. Victoria House offers a number of different guest room options including thatch-roofed casitas, plantation-style rooms and beachfront villas, two of which have private swimming pools. In addition, our three thatch-roof, two bedroom villas and four infinity suites overlook a 70 foot infinity pool, wide green lawn and the blue Caribbean. The Palmilla Restaurant offers enough gastronomic delights that you might never leave the property for a meal but, if you do, we’re sure you’ll be back. Test Drive Maarten Hoffmann reviews the Mercedes SL65 AMG
Mercedes Benz is a word synonymous with quality, style and performance and having owned many of them in my time, I heartly approve of Stuttgart’s efforts. I had a glorious 250SE and a SL500 from the 70’s of which l have fond memories – not quite so of the hugely collectable 540K that l once parked in a Paris underground car park that flooded – that car now would be worth £8 million – l think l feel a little faint! It has to be said that a few years back, Mercedes had been let down a tad on reliability and dealer service according to statistics but l can attest that these problems no longer exist and the range of models and level of service have never been better. Then, be still my beating heart, Mercedes call and ask if l would like to join them at Mercedes Benz World and try out their new jet fighter – the SL65 AMG. I thought about this for 1.2 seconds and then made my way out of the door like a scalded cat and left considerable rubber on the driveway. I arrive in Weybridge to the home of the old Brooklands Track, now replaced with Mercs own much smaller track and after the customary effuse greeting from their professional staff, before l know it, Charles has tossed me the keys and casually mentioned that when l got tired of the roads l could take to the track! I might have died and gone to heaven.
“It looks beautiful, smells beautiful and you just know that this twin turbo 6.0 litre V12 is about to try to rip your face off”
The SL has always been a beautiful car, right from birth in 1954 and derives from the German Sport Leicht or Sport Lightweight and the moniker was first applied to the gorgeous 300SL Gullwing. AMG is Mercedes tuning division and it’s always a good sign when you see that badge but in this instance they have excelled. It looks beautiful, smells beautiful and you just know that this twin turbo 6.0 litre V12 is about to try to rip your face off. Pulling out onto the A3, l am enamoured by the superb leather seats, the air scarf that wafts warm air on my neck and the quiet threat that emanates from the burbling hunk of metal under the bonnet. To be honest, the A3 went past in a blur,

as all 621bhp was unleashed by my right foot and the smooth rapidity of the 7-speed auto is astonishing. 60mph came in less than 4 seconds, 125mph in 11 seconds and warp speed a second or two later. This is a very dangerous car as the speed comes on so fast and so smoothly that by the time you’ve noticed, you’re in front of the beak and facing 6 months! I think I’m in love. It purrs along at traffic speed in near total silence and with the manners of an 18th Courtesan, ensuring that you are lured into a false sense of security. But one irreverent blip of the pedal and your world turns upside down. The traction control light can easily be made to introduce itself at 80mph. In the dry! With little effort! The cars profile and huge rubber at each corner means that there is zero roll in corners and just to ensure you feel tip top to push on, the seat bolsters electronically squeeze you into the seat as you put the power on. Not sure l like that, as it is very disconcerting but
“The remarkable grip seems to defy the laws of physics”

it certainly works to fix you to the seat back. It seems churlish to mention fuel economy but you will struggle to better 20mpg in real world driving but honestly, if you have just forked out £168,285 in cold blood, l doubt you give a monkeys about the cost of the fuel but at full Autobahn tilt, the number of stops to fill would get old quite quickly. The folding roof is a piece of engineering art in itself and there is very little wind noise and although the stowed roof limits the luggage space, it’ll do an overnight for two quite comfortably. I sat there for a few minutes pressing the roof up and down and watched in awe at what is an engineering ballet performance like no other. Enough said, now back through the gates and into the track control area awaiting my clearance to wring the neck out of it. The waved hand appears and l let it rip and l have

to say that to a petrol head, this is about as much fun as you can have with your trousers on. Doesn’t matter what speed you take the corner, it refuses to under steer with the traction control ensuring the rear doesn’t step out and it has such remarkable grip, that it seems to defy the laws of physics. The balance and sheer devastating brute force is a thing to behold and just goes to prove that decade after decade, the Germans are the finest automobiles manufacturers on the planet and by this example, they will remain aloft for many years to come. Now becalmed with the behemoth powered down in the car park, l must say that as awesome as this thing is, it would be difficult to justify an increase of £84,000 over the ‘standard’ 4.7 V8 SL500 that offers almost everything you get in the 65, bar the top end acceleration and a bit of grunt – that’s 50%
more and it will be a rare breed that parts with that wad, but whichever one you choose, sell the kids, rent out the wife, flog a kidney or mortgage your granny, but BUY one of these or at the very least, drive one of these before you die. If you want to: soak up the sun Then you might want to try Trinidad and nearby Tobago. With a lively party scene and annual carnival celebration, the air of festivity never really leaves these Trinidad, whilst Tobago offers smaller, quieter beaches but an equally uplifting atmosphere. Anguilla could have written the book on idyllic beaches and although the island is tiny, its local culture is big on friendliness, so you’re sure of a warm welcome as well
as warm sands! Also boasting rich heritage and small but perfectly formed beaches, Antigua is perfect for those looking to supplement their sunbathing with a couple of interesting daytrips. The ultimate last word in beach holidays, Aruba is hot, dry, and populated with very little other than huge world-class resorts. A huge variety of restaurants and bars with familiar options for those who don’t like feeling too far from home, even when they’re on the other side of the world, Aruba is the place for ultimate relaxation. If you want to: experience the motion of the ocean Tiny but packed with things to do, Bonaire is renowned with divers for spectacular sights close to the shore; the forty islands, grouped into the British Virgin Islands, are excellent for yachters and divers, with a glamorous social centre in the main island of Tortola. ith thousands of destinations across hundreds of islands, reefs and quays to choose from, choosing an area of the Caribbean to visit can be a challenge! Different holidaymakers have different priorities, so here are our suggestions depending on the type of break you fancy. Don’t count any out for budget reasons – changes to flight routes and frequency means that some Caribbean spots are lowering their prices to bring in more tourist. There are some amazing last minute deals available, opening Carribean holidays up to all budgets.

forests, hills and valleys to explore, stunning beaches with well-populated resorts and visitors from the world over – a compromise without drawbacks for the family with varied needs or for the nature-loving walker who also wants a relaxing break. If you want to… get a taste of local life Home to the beautiful and historical harbour city of Willemstad, Curaçao is a mid-sized island which also has pretty beaches for a day’s bathing and isn’t too focused on tourists. The dual Dutch and French cultures of StMartin/Sint Maarten make for a very lively island with varied experiences of all cultural and gastronomic sorts, with options to suit all tastes and budgets. Grenada is a small ex-British colony – easily guessed from the name of the
capital, St George’s – with inviting small beaches and hills covered in rainforest, plus a friendly local culture. It’s a wonderful location for shopping for souvenirs, and forming some of the memories that will be the very best things you take home. Fort George itself is not to be missed! Why not visit the Mona monkeys that live near Grand Etang National Park or take advantage of Grenada’s topography, and work up a sweat hiking to one of the island’s many waterfalls before cooling off with a relaxing swim in chilled waters? Water taxis are also available to take you to the nearby Grand Anse Beach, which is famous worldwide for its surprisingly secluded beauty and for the restaurants that surround it. The French island of Guadeloupe combines the lure of beautiful tropical

beaches with a reputation for incredible local food. Those keen on learning and exploration will value a trip to Haiti, with its rich African culture and challenging recent history. For the true taste of the Caribbean, where can rival Cuba? The huge island is home to fascinating urban life, a world-famous music scene, quintessentially local cuisine and enough fascinating sights for endless exploration. For those who have trouble making up their minds… The Cayman islands are a tourist-friendly, hassle-free holiday destinations where you can laze on a beach, swim with stingrays and have your picture taken with turtles in an afternoon. Arguably the most famous Caribbean destination, Jamaica is preserved as an example of Caribbean culture, food, drink and music. Tourists are also made welcome in Barbados, a neat and friendly island packed with resorts and particularly well
suited to surfers, sunbathers and those on a budget who wish to sample as much as they can of what the Caribbean has to offer. A large and predominantly Hispanic country, the Dominican Republic is home to stunning resorts and beaches which offer everything a visitor to the Caribbean could ask for. Colonial history is also laid out at tourists’ fingertips and, inland, interesting terrain makes the island a challenge for walkers too. Those seeking peace… A final thought: Caribbean hotel group, Elite Island Resorts, is said to be introducing mobile phone free zones and beaches at all of its resorts, to enforce relaxation for those who find it hard to switch off. The Grenadines play host to specific ‘digital detox’ holidays, where checking calls and emails are strictly forbidden. With so much to do and see, though, it’s hard to imagine you’ll find time to glance at your phone in the sumptuous Carribean. www.caribbean.co.uk

MEN’S
C3 MALVERN CHRONOGRAPH MK II £215 The quintessential Englishness of the C3 was inspired by the grace of vintage Aston Martin race cars – creating a stylish blend of power, performance and design. The chronograph eyes express the watch’s motoring heritage while the one-piece optic white dial adds a contemporary touch to a design classic.
C1000 TYPHOON FGR4 £1,500 Taking off to an ecstatic response from aviation watch enthusiasts, the powerful styling of the C1000 is set to be a cult classic. Christopher Ward’s most technically sophisticated aviation watch is inspired by one of the most advanced military aircraft in the world, the RAF’s multi-role combat fighter, the FGR4 Typhoon. Powered by a modified version of ETA’s 7750 chronograph movement, it is also the company’s first use of a high-tech ceramic case.
C8 REGULATOR £1,025 Its retro looks make it eye-catchingly stylish but this specialist aviation watch is also fascinating to use. The most important hand, the minute hand, is centrally located, whilst the hours and seconds can be read from the two sub-dials which are established at the bi-polar points of the dial in traditional fashion. The Old Radium SuperLuminovaTM finish of the hands and indexes adds to the military feel of the watches as does the aviation theme of the over-sized crown and the superb distressed vintage leather strap.
C9 HARRISON JUMPING HOUR MKII £1,850 For the Jumping Hour Mark II, Christopher Ward have further refined the original, ingenious adaptation of ETA’s 2824-2 movement to produce what, in the Master Watchmaker’s own words, is ‘probably the most precise jumping hour movement the world has yet seen’, and a true collectors’ piece. This special 18ct solid rose gold bezel version is a Limited Edition of just 250.

W11 AMELIA, £299 Created in 2012 in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s last flight – the beautifully crafted Amelia watch takes flight with two new colour adaptations this autumn. ADVERTORIAL
A WORLD APART See beautiful Saint Helena, a tropical isle with a difference
If you’re choosing when to visit the magnificent tropical isle of St Helena, don’t pin your choice on the weather. Despite its location within the tropics, the island’s location means the weather is equable all year round and not really exposed to seasons as we know them. So, pack for a lot of sunshine and a little rain, and rely instead on the celebrations for which the island is famed. First and foremost, St. Helena Day on 21st May, is a Public Holiday that is celebrated by the whole island. It was on this day in 1502 that the island was discovered, and it was named after Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, whose birthday is celebrated on that day. St Helena celebrations on the day itself are huge and central, making this a fantastic day immerse yourself in a distilled version of the island’s culture, all in one day. A predominantly Christian island, St Helena celebrates Christmas and Easter in a very big and unique way. Christmas Eve on the island is seen by most as one huge party night and includes a festive street parade known by locals as ‘dancing down the street, from the top of Jamestown to Market Street. There is a traditional Christmas dinner feast, followed ‘house crawls’ around Jamestown, as wellwishing groups of friends and family visit each other’s house to wish them a Merry Christmas, sing songs, play games and laugh together… eating, drinking and merrymaking is a very important part of the festive celebration, after all! Church Parades are held every fourth Sunday in the month and on important Saints’ days, where the Scouts and Girl Guides march in

Jamestown. On Remembrance Sunday, these youth organisations are joined with the Church Brigade, the Police, and societies. The major organisations, such as the Scouts, have their own sports days over holiday weekends and are like huge fetes with side shows, stalls, food and of course, music. There are also a variety of festivals on the island… a week long walking festival, suitable for beginners to seasoned hikers, and the Festival of Running for those who enjoy a faster pace! Both attract many participants from overseas as well as locals. The Festival of Arts & Culture is a biennial event and highlights St Helena’s people and culture, with a two-week programme of activities and events. Whenever you visit St Helena you can be assured of delicious local food. The interesting cuisine is based around locally caught fish in fish cakes, curries, soups and much more, but is influenced by Malasian, British and Chinese flavours and cooking styles with a bit of a twist which makes ‘Saints’ dishes unique. Spices and curries are common, and rice dishes such as Pilau originates from South East Asia, but has its own curried twist on the island! Local crafts are also quite special, using combinations of lace, Acacia seeds, aloe and wood, with fine sidelines in painting, pottery. There’s a huge variety of local art and craft which reflects the beauty and richness of life on the island, and it enables you to take a little of that celebratory spirit home with you. www.sthelenatourism.com
