Welcome
As we enter into 2015, it’s time to start planning the year’s adventures and excursions. One of the hottest travel trends at the moment is healthy holidays, and I was bowled over to discover just how many options there are out there for fitness fanatics. Forget stuffing your face at all-you-can eat buffets. Put down that sugary cocktail. There will be no time for the usual holiday-time slobbing out at the healthy holiday destinations we’ve chosen on page 36. If you prefer to take your holidays at a more relaxed pace, you’ll love our road trip article on page 54, which takes you through some of the best drives in the world, from the Pacific Coast of California, to the Old Military road in Perthshire, Scotland. So load up on snacks, travel games and your favourite music and take in the scenery as it flashes past – without having to lift a finger. The beauty of travel is that there are so many ways to do it. Not long ago my sister and I embarked on a cycling holiday to Gozo, a beautiful, peaceful little island just off the coast of Malta. By bicycle you see so much more – you can feel the sea breeze on your face, smell foods cooking in different households and really experience the feel of a place. You can find out what we got up to on Gozo by flicking to page 27.
Legends of the Sea, page 54
We have a whole wealth of destinations and holiday ideas to inspire you in this issue, so get stuck in and enjoy your read!

Creeks in Corsica or the Balearic Islands?
Boats and fisherman’s shelter in Formentera
The choice of cruising areas in the Mediterranean is so vast that one could quite happily sail here forever. The western basin alone hides priceless treasures, with destinations along the Spanish, French and Italian coasts, not to mention Corsica, the Balearic Islands, the islands scattered along the foot of Italy, Sicily, and the Maghreb coast of North Africa. If you include Greece and Turkey, a whole other universe opens up before you. If I had to choose one place? It would without a doubt be the Strait of Bonifacio, the stretch of water separating the south coast of Corsica, where you can always shelter from strong (and sometimes very strong!) winds, and the maze of islands of the Maddalena Archipelago off the north coast of Sardinia. You could spend days anchoring here and there without ever coming back to the same spot, and end up by fetching up at the fantastic site of Bonifacio to sample the incomparable Corsican cuisine. Corsica Spring mooring in the Lavezzi Islands, south Corsica. The months of June and September are exquisite all over the Mediterranean, but even more so here than elsewhere.

Extreme Egypt From Red Sea diving to desert safaris and sand boarding, find out why Egypt is a growing destination for extreme sports in 2015

EGYPT
T
raditionally Egypt has been a holiday destination for history fanatics hoping to explore the ancient world. World-famous for its temples, pyramids and wonderfully preserved crypts and artefacts, few people would associate Egypt with extreme sports. But with bags to offer in the way of world-class dive sites, sandboarding, bungee jumping and mountain trekking, Egypt is quickly building a reputation as a top destination for adventurous travellers. Here we take a look at some of the exciting activities on offer: Trekking up Mount Catherine Mount Catherine is the tallest mountain in Egypt, offering views over the whole of Sinai on a clear day. It is named after St. Catherine of Alexandria, a woman who was tortured and eventually beheaded in 16 OCEAN VIEW
around 260AD for her Christian beliefs. Legend has it, angels carried her body away into the Sinai Mountains, where monks later found it in the 9th or 10th century, after one of them had a vision of it being there. Today you can still visit St Catherine’s remains in a sarcophagus in St Catherine’s church, located at the foot of Mount Sinai. On the way you can also visit the Chapel of the Burning Bush - featured in Exodus 3:2 when God told Moses to take the people of Israel out of Egypt. The sublime views from Mount Catherine will awe anybody hoping for their own ‘religious experience’, with walkers required to navigate remote canyons and steep, narrow trails over the spectacular landscape. Once at the summit, trekkers are treated to a 360º view over Sinai, including the jagged peak of Mount
Sinai which, although dominating from the ground, looks like a mere hillock from 8,625ft. Hint: Time your ascent to coincide with sunrise at the summit. Watching the rocky landscape transform from dusky blue to a bright, burning orange is something you will never forget. Sandboarding Originally trending in the Emirates, sandboarding has quickly become one of Egypt’s most popular desert sports. Anyone with moderate fitness can have a go at the safe but exhilarating sport. It is just like snowboarding but, as you probably guessed, it takes place on sand dunes. Tour operators offer a number of sandboarding excursions from Cairo, Alexandria and Mara Matrouh to a perfect spot near Siwa Oasis.
EGYPT
Saint Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.
The giant dunes at Siwa were created by the wind, sweeping the sand into piles up to 140m high. This spot is thought to be one in the best in the world, where you can enjoy a whole dune to yourself and get back to your hotel in time for a swim before sunset. During the day you will be staggered by the beauty of the dunes, and if you have time, try to drop by into the town of Siwa itself, which is inhabited by people with their own culture and language. This is one of the best places in Egypt to buy traditional local crafts. After a long day of sandboarding - why not take a dip in the oasis’ freshwater springs and salt lakes, surrounded by lush olive orchards and palm groves? Windsurfing Egypt’s Red Sea offers some excellent spots for windsurfing. The English-run
club Moonbeach Windsurfing near Ras Sudr is particularly recommended, offering windsurfing and kitesurfing coaching in a friendly, safe environment. At the centre you can mingle with other adventure-seekers at the bar, enjoying cold beer on the decking that overlooks the beach. It’s an ideal place to watch the action on the water when you’re not out there yourself. Instruction and equipment hire is available for all levels, whether you are learning from scratch, or improving your skills. Instructors coach small, dedicated groups so each individual gets a decent amount of one-to-one teaching time. Moonbeach Hotel is simple but comfortable, nestled in a stunning location between the imposing Sinai desert and the turquoise-blue Gulf of Suez. The hotel benefits from being right on the beach, so guests can open their screen doors right onto the sand.

ESSENTIAL RECIPES
Cantina - Recipes from a Mexican Kitchen Transport yourself thousands of miles away to Mexico with these Latin-inspired dishes by Paul Wilson
Warm Bonito & Fennel Cebiche Salad with Figs & Pomegranate SERVES 4–6 olive oil 800 g (1 lb 12 oz) lime-cured, boneless sashimi-grade bonito fillet, blood-line removed, or you can use cobia fish or any firm oily fish (see Lime cure for fish, page 45) 9 ripe figs, roughly torn into quarters 250 ml (81/2 fl oz/1 cup) Pomegranate mojo (page 22) pomegranate seeds for garnish (optional) SALAD 200 g (7 oz) black radishes, thinly sliced 2 small bulb spring onions (scallions), thinly sliced 1 bulb fennel, thinly sliced 2 serrano chillies, seeded and finely cut into matchsticks (see Glossary) 50 g (13/4 oz) bronzed fennel or dill tops, roughly chopped 1 large handful of purple basil leaves or mint 100 ml (31/2 fl oz) Zesty lime dressing (page 37)
Bonito is a strangely undervalued fish in some places. We are so conditioned to eating Japanese-flavoured sashimi salads with traditional sashimi fish, but I urge you to source more interesting fish with Latin flavours to excite the palate. After all, Latin cuisine is all about balance of flavours, heat and acidity. I recommend you cure the fish first as perfect sashimigrade fish is becoming harder to source and, while adding more flavour to the fish, this also allows you the comfort of working ahead when entertaining. This dish would be perfect as a shared table starter.
To prepare the salad, combine the radish, onion, sliced fennel, chilli, fennel tops and basil in a medium bowl. Preheat a medium non-stick pan over high heat and drizzle with a little olive oil. Sear the bonito for 30 seconds on each side to seal. Sear slightly longer on the skin side, so it is crisp and golden. Place on paper towel to drain and cool. Add the dressing to the salad and toss to coat. Arrange the salad and torn figs neatly to one side of each plate. Cut the fish, skin facing up, diagonally into 1 cm (1â „2 in) thick slices. Arrange the fish next to the salad. Dress the fish with pomegranate mojo and garnish with extra pomegranate seeds, if desired. Serve immediately.

Lamb Belly Ribs with Pomegranate & Flor De Jamaica SERVES 6 Mexican-style pickles (page 53) to serve (optional) Refried beans (page 42) to serve (optional) Cool cucumber salad (page 231) to serve (optional) LAMB 2 litres (68 fl oz/8 cups) Chipotle chicken stock (page 14) 200 g (7 oz) rosella (wild hibiscus flower) (see Glossary) 2 kg (4 lb 6 oz) free-range lamb belly ribs, chine bone removed olive oil for drizzling 200 g (7 oz) Latin spice rub (page 30) 400 ml (131/2 fl oz) Pomegranate mojo (page 22) CARAMELISED FIGS 6 ripe figs, halved icing (confectioners’) sugar for dusting sea salt to taste
“Flor de Jamaica, also known as rosella or wild hibiscus in the Western world, has a lovely acidity that cuts through rich meats. It is available in most Latin food stores and is also great for cocktails. Pork ribs are universally popular, so much so that they are quite expensive these days. Therefore, try these lamb ribs for a delicious change, cooked barbecoa-style with a sweet-andsour glaze. You can cook them ahead of time, and cool. Remove any excess fat with a sharp knife before reheating on the barbecue or re-roasting in a pan. You can tear chunks of the glazed rib meat into warm tortillas with a fragrant herb salad. I love serving these with Pasilla chilli relish”
Ideally preheat a wood-fired or charcoal barbecue to char your ribs as it will impart greater flavour. Alternatively, you can use a hot frying pan on the stove top. If using a wood or charcoal barbecue, heat until the coals have a thin coating of grey ash. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). To prepare the lamb, combine the stock and rosella in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Set aside to infuse for 15 minutes. Drizzle the lamb ribs with olive oil and season with the spice rub, coating all over. Grill the ribs until charred all over. Transfer to a pan and set over low heat. Cook the ribs gently to render the excess fat. Place the ribs in a large roasting dish. Pour over the infused stock. Cover and cook in the oven for 2 hours, or until the meat is falling off the bone. Remove the lamb from the braise and place on a rack set over a tray, to drain. Cover and allow to cool. Refrigerate if time permits. Once cold, shave the excess fat off the lamb. To prepare the caramelised figs, arrange the fig halves on a baking tray, dust with icing sugar and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 5 minutes, or until caramelised. Meanwhile, heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Drizzle with oil. Cook the lamb, fat side down, for 5 minutes, or until crisp and golden. Drain off the excess fat. Pour in 200 ml (7 fl oz) of the pomegranate mojo and simmer until reduced to a syrupy glaze. Brush the glaze over the lamb. To serve, place the lamb ribs on a platter and drizzle with the remaining pomegranate mojo. Arrange the figs and pickles, if using, decoratively to garnish. Serve with the refried beans and cool cucumber salad, if desired.

Black & Blue Corn Tortilla Soup with Bacon & Pumpkin 100 ml (31/2 fl oz) olive oil 200 g (7 oz) smoked bacon, diced 4 celery stalks, sliced 1 red onion, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 red bullhorn chilli, diced (see Glossary) 11/2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 tablespoon smoked paprika 1 tablespoon dried chilli flakes 1 kg (2 lb 3 oz) smoked ham hock 3 litres (101 fl oz/12 cups) chicken stock 220 g (8 oz/1 cup) dried black beans, soaked in cold water overnight sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 200 g (7 oz) blue corn (tortilla) chips to serve PUMPKIN 100 ml (31/2 fl oz) olive oil 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) butternut pumpkin (squash), cut into bite-sized pieces 55 g (2 oz/1/4 cup) sugar 2 jalapeños, sliced 1 large handful of oregano leaves, roughly chopped GOAT’S CREMA 400 g (14 oz) soft goat’s cheese 250 g (9 oz/1 cup) sour cream 1 tablespoon ground coriander 1 garlic clove juice of 2 limes, or to taste sea salt to taste Heat the oil in a large heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Cook the bacon, vegetables, garlic and spices for 5 minutes, or until softened and fragrant. Add the ham hock and chicken stock and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer for 30 minutes. Add the pre-soaked beans, cover and gently simmer for a further 45–60 minutes, until tender. Meanwhile, to prepare the pumpkin, heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Fry the pumpkin for 10 minutes, or until it begins to caramelise. Add the sugar and continue to cook, until well coloured. Add the jalapeño and oregano and cook for a further minute. Set aside. To prepare the goat’s crema, combine the goat’s cheese, sour cream, coriander and garlic in a food processor and blend to combine. Season with the lime juice and salt. Once the beans are tender, remove the ham hock and approximately 300 g (101⁄2 oz) of the beans and set aside – you need enough beans to garnish the soup. Blend the soup using a hand-held blender, until smooth. Strain through a finemesh sieve. Return to the pan and season with salt and pepper to taste. Shred the meat off the ham hock. Add the ham and the reserved beans to the soup and stir to combine. Cantina by Paul Wilson (Hardie Grant, £25.00) Photography: Chris Middleton

To serve, place a spoonful of the warm cooked pumpkin, along with the jalapeño and oregano leaves, in a neat pile in the centre of the soup bowls or plates. Pour in the soup and top with a generous spoonful of goat’s crema. Serve with the corn chips, crushed if desired.
Going to Gozo A week of cycling around Malta’s pristine sister island - By Zoe Thomas
E
very year my sister and I go on an adventure together. Nothing too intrepid. No hiking in the Himalayas, kayaking the Amazon, or exploring inner Mongolia. It just has to be new to us: something we’ve never done before. Gozo is Malta’s smaller sister island, just north of the tiny archipelago between Sicily and the Tunisian coast. We decided we would fly out, rent an apartment and spend a week cycling around the island, exploring its dramatic coastlines, ancient temples and picturesque farmland on our own steam. Our home for the week was Gharb, an
ancient village on the westernmost point of the island. From Mgarr harbour we bussed to Victoria, the island’s capital, before jumping on another bus past lush fields and golden rock to the centre of Gharb. All the buildings in the village – and in fact every village in Gozo, are made from beautiful buttery-coloured limestone blocks that are quarried just down the road. We found our apartment, past the village church and oddly-placed red British telephone box, and down the hill towards the spectacular arabic-looking Ta Pinu Basilica. We dropped our luggage off at our
apartment (cosy, clean and with a streetfront balcony perfect for evening Sangria) and emerged showered and dressed to explore the village. It was evening. The sun cast golden streaks between the buildings. We wandered back up towards the square in search of food and came across the Gharb Rangers Football Club – not a classic eating establishment granted, but we were so tired and hungry after a long day of travelling that we were willing to try anything. Downstairs there was a games area and a bar; a few elderly locals staring at the TV. We were welcomed OCEAN VIEW 27
by a friendly waitress and ushered up a flight of stairs. I expected to be seated in some dingy back-room with sticky tables and laminated menus, but we emerged out onto a rooftop terrace, flooded in the golden sunset, with the coastline stretched out beneath us and the magnificent Basilica glowing divinely in the valley below. It was breathtaking. We took a seat at a table. There were a few other families and couples on other tables, chatting, laughing and eating beneath the palm-leaf awning. You would never have known this little enclave of life and laughter existed from the street below. The food was cheap, simple and plentiful. We opted for giant cheesy pizzas and took the left-overs home with us as fuel for our cycling trip. The next morning, we took a bus into Victoria to track down a couple of hire bikes. These were reasonably priced, two for €50 for the week. We decide to cycle to Dwerja Bay, the place that first caught my eye when searching for destinations.
This is located near the village of San Lawrenz and can be accessed easily by bicycle, on foot, via bus or with a hire car (there is a car park, cafe and souvenir kiosk here).
Azure Window
I knew what I was looking for, but it still took me by surprise when I saw
Inland Sea
Dwerja Bay conceals another spectacle. From the road above it looks like a small lagoon of aqua water, surrounded by a pleasant pebbly beach. Beneath the surface though, this inland pool drops to a staggering 35m and links to the Mediterranean Sea via a long, narrow cave through the cliffs. This is the Inland Sea, considered to be one of the best dive sites in the world. On the day we visited the winds were strong and the waves were big – so no swimming. But on calm days children can happily play in the shallows and you can even take a boat trip through the cave to the open sea.

it, towering against the hazy blue sky, angry waves pummelling its base and ant-like tourists clambering over its jagged spine, gambling with their lives. This is a 50m high limestone sea arch, romantically named the ‘Azure Window’. Definitely worth a visit before the relentless ocean causes it to collapse into a stump in the next few years.
Blue Hole
The mysteriously named blue hole is another one of Dwrja Bay’s natural wonders. This is located in the rocks below the Azure Window – a rocky pool that plunges 16m deep and harbours a staggering variety of marine life, including fire worms, sea horses and octopi. A mustvisit for avid divers. Our third day in Gozo was overcast but still warm, so we abandoned our beach plans and decided to cycle to the Ggantija

Temples, with a pronunciation we never quite mastered. The temples are some of the oldest buildings in the world, dating back to between 3600 and 3200BC. Considering their age, the buildings are incredibly well preserved – partly due to the hardwearing coralline limestone they were made from, and have even earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. You can navigate a series of wooden walkways through the neolithic temples, with some of the main features highlighted by informative signs. A great educational trip for a rainy day.
Greek Myths and Swimming at Ramla Bay
Unbeknownst to me, I had already seen Ramla Bay. This beautiful stretch of golden-red sand served as the backdrop for the famous battle scene in the film Troy, starring Brad Pitt. Gozo’s connections to Greek mythology are well documented, with Ramla Bay suspected by experts to be the place referred to by Homor in The Odyssey. There is a cave you can visit in the rocks above the bay believed to be where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus for seven years. A trip up here is worth it simply for the views of the unusual coloured sand, contrasted by the deep blue of the ocean. Down on the beach you can find changing facilities and a nice cafe serving hot food and drinks. We chained our bikes to a lamppost here and went for a quick dip in the surf, before splaying out in the sand and soaking up the gorgeous Maltese sunshine.
The Blue Lagoon
Towards the end of the week, we decided to leave our bicycles in the apartment and catch a boat to Comino, the smallest island in the Maltese archipelago. Comino is accessed from Mgarr, where you can find a huge choice of tourist boat excursions jostling for business on the harbour front.

£ As we approached the tiny island, we could see the small beaches and surrounding rocks crowded with people mostly day-trippers from Malta escaping the heat for a dip in the crystal clear waters of the Blue Lagoon. We disembarked and decided to go for a walk around the island to find somewhere quieter to take a dip. On the north side of the island we found a secluded beach just down from the campsite. There is also a hotel on the island which offers kayak hire - a great way to explore the island’s craggy coastline. Gozo may only be small, but it is packed with beautiful natural wonders, ancient historical sites and pretty villages perfect for exploring on foot or by bike. It is a quiet, peaceful place. A place where you can escape real life without feeling isolated. In Gozo, you are never too far from a bar, cafe, or a friendly Gozitan willing to give you directions or advice on where to visit.

2. Travel in Style
Ports Direct invites you to tailor your experience for something a little more extraordinary. If you’re celebrating a big occasion, perhaps a birthday or a wedding anniversary, why not add champagne and flowers to your vehicle to make the journey that little bit more special? 3. Economical
Ports Direct offers a shared service to selected cruise lines departing UK ports, so passengers leaving for the same cruise can team up to share the cost of transport. HEALTHY HOLIDAYS
Mesa Hotels and Resorts
Going on holiday can be bad news for the waistline. All-you-can eat buffets, cocktail happy-hour and the tantalising prospect of lying sedate on a beach all day can quickly cause the pounds to pile on. But not every overseas jaunt has to end with a week-long hangover and trousers that don’t fit. More and more resorts and travel companies are offering a new kind of break that promises to leave you feeling better and looking leaner: healthy holidays. From holistic retreats in Thailand, to personal training sessions in Java, there’s a world of fitness opportunities out there for all tastes and abilities. Why slog away in your local gym when you could be doing Bootcamp on a beach in Greece, or boxing in Zanzibar? There are thousands of healthy holidays to choose from in 2015, whatever your age, goals, or fitness level.

Beyond Dublin:
Exploring Ireland’s Blackwater Valley Take the time to visit some of Southern Ireland’s lesser-known attractions Most people – especially international visitors, limit their exploration of Ireland to Dublin city centre. But beyond the capital’s lively streets, beyond Temple Bar, the Guinness Factory and all the other well-trodden attractions in Dublin, lies a rural land steeped in ancient myth and history. 42 OCEAN VIEW
South of the M50, the suburbs of Dublin give way to the the deep green valleys and forests that lend the country its Emerald Isle nickname. The River Blackwater flows for 70 miles from the Cork/Kerry border, through the Cork towns of Mallow and Fermoy and over the County Waterford border where it spills into the Celtic Sea
at Youghal. While it’s best known for being one of the top salmon fishing rivers in Western Europe, Blackwater has plenty more to offer visitors in search of adventure – from mountain biking and rock climbing in the Ballyhoura Mountains, to castles, priories and a traditional 1791 Irish pub experience in Castletownroche.
Bridgetown Priory
Near Mallow lies the ruins of a 13th century Augustinian priory, still with its kitchen, cloister, refectory, chapter house and church in remarkably good shape (considering it was discovered by Henry VIII in 1540 during the Reformation). In recent years, Bridgetown Priory has undergone extensive restoration work and today visitors can wander through the ruins all year round.
Blackwater Castle
If you’re really keen to soak up some Irish history, there is the option to stay in your own private castle a 30 minute
walk from the priory. Blackwater Castle rises majestically above the river Awbeg and has a rich history extending back to the Mesolithic period. It is now available to hire for family gatherings, weddings and private parties where guests can enjoy free-reign of the opulent suites and reception rooms, following in the footsteps of Sir Walter Raleigh, Oliver Cromwell and even Michael Jackson – all of whom have spent time in the castle over the past few centuries.
other. Step through the door into 1791, when the pub was first founded, and enjoy a warm welcome and homely atmosphere as you sip real ale and tuck into a big plate of pub grub in the company of traditional Irish singers, dancers and storytellers. Antique trinkets and fascinating collectibles adorn the old stone walls, giving the pub a cosy and authentic atmosphere. A great end to a day exploring the nearby castle and priory.

trails. Here you can race over 90km of purpose-built mountain tracks marked with routes ranging in difficulty, from novice to true thrill-seeker. Wind your way over natural woodland, peat bog, grouse more, rugged mountains and peaceful valleys at your own leisure, following the coloured markings as you go.
Afternoon Tea at Longueville House
There are three looped trails on Mount Hillary ranging from 40 minutes to two hours. The walk leads you through forests with spectacular views over the Blackwater Valley. Why not pack a picnic and make a day of it? There are longer alternative routes for this who wish to be challenged.

pp Cork City was the European Capital of Culture in 2005 and in 2010 it was listed by the Lonely Planet Guide as one of the top 10 cities for Best in Travel 2010. After Dublin, Cork is Ireland’s second most important city. In fact, proud locals call it the ‘real capital of Ireland’. The centre is a web of Georgian parades, built on an island in the River Lee, The waterfronts and bridges give it a Venetian feel and at night the lights of trendy bars and restaurants reflecting in the water gives the city a vibrant cosmopolitan vibe. Enjoy a refined afternoon tea at one of Ireland’s top country house hotels. Served in the dining room and Mount Hillary Room in front of a crackling log fire, the tea consists of freshly cut sandwiches, baked scones with Chantilly cream and garden berry preserve, followed by afternoon tea cakes and pastries served on a tiered cake stand. Don’t miss the English Market, which can be traced back to King James I in 1610 and offers a mix of family-run stores, traditional international foods and traditional Cork produce such as blood sausage (called drisheen), tripe, buttered eggs, spiced beef a dried salted cod (basttlebord). Another Cork tradition is bell ringing at St. Anne’s Church Shandon, where visitors can climb the steeple and play a tune of their choice on the bells. The steeple’s golden fish weather vane is an iconic feature of Cork’s skyline. Back at ground-level, pay a visit to the eerie Cork City Gaol and discover what life was like for 19th century prisoners. Was that the sound of an inmate’s shuffling feet, or just a gust of wind? Enjoy an authentic prison experience with waxwork figures, sound effects and signs telling the social history of this fascinating city. home. Whether you’re a nature lover, a culture vulture, or an adrenaline junky, we’re sure you’ll spark up a little amour in one of these hand-picked destinations for Valentine’s Day...
Jumby Bay, Antigua If the sound of secluded coves, sunset strolls and ocean-facing infinity pools appeals to you, then there is every chance you’ll be seduced by Jumba Bay, a luxury spa resort two miles off the coast of Antigua. Having recently undergone a major renovation (it

used to be a private estate), the hotel is now equipped with revamped modern-colonial style bedrooms, suites and private villas, three trendy restaurants, an outdoor spa, tennis courts and fitness centre. This is a hassle-free inclusive holiday: you can spend the entire trip on one of the two private beaches, canoodling in a hammock strung between two palms, or you can explore this little corner of the Caribbean further. Head to nearby Hell’s Gate Island by boat and snorkel beneath the magnificent natural arch carved into the rock over the sea - or try a spot of windsurfing, kite surfing or sailing off Jabberwock beach on the northern side of Antigua. Jumby Bay truly is a hidden paradise, accessible only via a 15 minute boat ride from the main island. hwww.jumbybay.co.uk
Verona, Italy Where could be more romantic than fair Verona, the meeting place of Shakespeare’s most famous star-crossed lovers? Whisk your beau away to this ancient Italian city and re-enact the balcony scene at Casa di Giulietta, a 13th century villa once owned by the family dell Capello, which now houses a small museum and bronze sculpture of Juliet. It’s traditional, and perhaps a little quirky, to rub her right breast for luck and stick a love note to the wall of the courtyard. Next, head to Teodoricore, a restaurant that sits on a hill high above the city, offering a staggering panorama both in the day and at night, when the lights are turned on and the valley glitters below. Stay at the heart of historic Verona at Palazzo Victoria, a five star boutique hotel with classic, opulent décor. Here you will find suites adorned with medieval frescos, 14th-century mosaics and rooftop views. Relax together in your own marble jacuzzi after a long day wandering the winding streets of this undeniably romantic city, and finish the day with the chef’s highly OCEAN VIEW 49

Buenos Aires, Argentina Fire up your romance in one of the most lively, passionate cities in the world: Buenos Aires, South America’s second largest metropolitan area. Mingle with Portenos, the city’s residents, and you’ll find their outspoken confidence and zest for life contagious. Pumping at the heart of Argentina’s capital is its most famous dance, the Tango. This powerful Latino dance is described as ‘making love in the vertical position’ and it’s incredible to watch. You can find professional Tango dancers display amazing feats of athleticism in the bars, cafes and streets of Buenos Aires. The city promises to get your senses tingling - and its food is no exception. On practically every street you will find parrillas (steakhouses) where meat-lovers can sate their appetite with grilled steaks in delicious marinades. Treat your loved-one to a little something from Palermo Viejo, one of the city’s best shopping districts where you’ll find countless upmarket boutiques selling fashion items and fun souvenirs. As night falls, fun-seekers will be drawn to the bars and nightclubs, which open at 2am and stay open until dawn. This is a top spot for couples who are young at heart. If you’re looking for a slice of luxury, stay at Alvear Palace, one of the most opulent hotels in the city, offering top class service in stunning surroundings.
Lake Lucerne, Swiss Alps Lake Lucerne, the fourth biggest in Switzerland, is romance in its purest form. This is Wordsworthian romance: straight from the setting of a 19th century novel or poem. Here, the 114 sq km lake glitters in the basin of four valleys. Steep mountains rear from its icy-blue depths, fringed with dark forests that provide shelter for foxes, OCEAN VIEW 51

deer, chamois and marmots. You and your partner can take a romantic steamer cruise across the lake in the evening, enjoying the last of the warm spring sunshine as you chug towards the lit-up town of Lucerne. Disembark and explore this ancient settlement, which centred around Chapel Bridge, one of Europe’s oldest bridges. Make sure you look up as you walk along it there are a number of frescos depicting the town’s history on the ceiling. Take a slow stroll through the streets, taking in the beautiful medieval architecture set against the majestic backdrop of jagged mountains. One of the best views in the region
is from Mount Rigi. The journey up the peak on the cog railway or cable car will offer plenty of opportune moments to steal a kiss or gaze into one another’s eyes - but don’t gaze for too long, or you’ll miss the unobstructed views over the Alps, covering 13 lakes and traversing the borders of both France and Germany. On Mount Rigi couples can also enjoy romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides all year round, enjoy dinner in a floating restaurant (cable car) to take in the sunset over the mountains, and relax at one of the many five star hotels in the region - from the Art Deco Hotel Montana, to the chalet-style Chedi Andermatt complete with outdoor sports centre and spa.

n a world where everything is instant – instant messaging, instant coffee, instant gratification, isn’t it nice to slow down and enjoy the ride every now and then? As they say – it’s the journey that matters, not the destination. You can jump on a plane and be somewhere in a few hours. But can you really experience the journey from 30,000 ft in the air? Can you really appreciate the distance and changing landscapes when you’re immersed in an in-flight film? When choosing to fly, you sacrifice experience for convenience. In a car you can engage with your surroundings. You can take it slow and stop wherever you like – you can personally witness the terrain, climate and architecture transform as you cross boundaries and borders. You can meet people, experience their lives and stumble across unexpected wonders. The road trip is the ultimate freedom and one of the best ways to really experience a place. Here, we’ve compiled some of the best routes in the world… 56 OCEAN VIEW
Best Coastal Drive
California Pacific Coast Highway What could be more American than heading off for a Californian road trip? Fly from London to San Francisco (10 hours) where the Pacific Coast Highway begins. There are plenty of car hire companies in the city, where you can get your hands on practically anything you fancy driving – whether you’ve always dreamed of zooming along in a flashy Aston Martin, or you’ve got your heart set on a classic Cadillac. Take your new wheels over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge for incredible views over the bay, before heading out into the wine districts of Napa and Sonoma. Wind down the windows and take in the warm air as you whip past vine-covered valleys on the scenic Silverado Trail. A hundred miles south you’ll stumble across the coastal community of Monterey, home to the world-renowned Moterey Bay Aquarium. Take an evening stroll around
the waterfront, visiting some of the many shops, restaurants and cafes along the way. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot harbour seals, pelicans and sea otters in their natural habitat. Back on the road, head to Route 1, which climbs more than 1,000ft above the sea. Stop off at Soberanes Point to watch sea otters, which are protected under California state law. Over the Old Coast Road you’ll pass through remote forest, canyons and 90 miles of unobstructed ocean views. Route 1 will take you all the way to Santa Barbara, a collection of coastal cities overlooking beautiful beaches skimming the Pacific. This is one of the best places in the world to spot endangered blue whales as they pass on their ancient migratory routes. A few miles down the road and you’ll hit Los Angeles – your final destination. Here you can explore all the iconic attractions, including Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland, the retail meccas of The Grove and the Beverley Centre, and drive down the famous Sunset Boulevard to dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean.

Best Nature Drive
South Africa, Bloemfontein to Durban If you’re looking for a long drive with plenty of wildlife along the way, try the 416 mile stretch between Bloemfontein to Durban, one of South Africa’s most scenic routes. Fly from London to Bloemfontein (11 hours 22 mins), the capital of South Africa’s Free State. Bloemfontein is known locally as the ‘city of roses’ because the flower grows abundantly all over the city. Before setting out on your South African road trip, take a day or two to wander around the city visiting the main attractions, such as the Botanical Garden Tree Route, a self-guided 1km walk featuring 43 indigenous trees. Nature lovers can buy a booklet sponsored by the University of the Free State’s Botany Department, which takes you through the tree names and their role in nature. There are numerous car hire places in Bloemfontein, where you can find the perfect vehicle for your adventure. Set off
early on the freeway, past yellow sunflower fields and pastoral flatlands towards the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho. As you zip around the edges, passing through Ladybrand nestled at the food of the majestic Maluti Mountains. Although small, Ladybrand is bustling with life and culture. Roughly 3km east lies Rose Cottage Cave, where Paleolithic people lived over 50,000 years ago. Here you can still see the rock paintings the ‘San’ people left, documenting their lives. Continue on through the Eastern Highlands, a backdrop of jagged, snowtopped peaks, to Clarens - a picturesque ‘art town’ with as many as 20 galleries jostling for customers on the town’s main street. Enjoy the many boutiques, restaurants and bars around the grassy square here before heading onto the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, where antelope bound alongside the road. Here you can hike through 11,600 hectares of highland habitat, home to black wildebeest, springbok, zebra and vultures. OCEAN VIEW 57

woodlands. There are numerous walks and trails through here and around the town offering spectacular views over the surrounding mountains. The town has a pretty market square and High Street lined with interesting boutique shops selling everything from whisky to clothes. Visit the Grantown Museum to understand more about the town and its people, or enjoy the Malt Whisky Trail, which takes you to the many distilleries located in this town.
Most Romantic Drive
The last leg of the journey to Durban takes you through one of Africa’s greatest mountain ranges: the Drakensberg (meaning Dragon Mountains). The Royal Natal National Park is nearby with a variety of walking trails - including a chain ladder up the ‘Amphitheatre’, an 8km/5mi-long curtain of rock. Your journey ends at the Indian Ocean and the busiest port in South Africa: The City of Durban. Durban offers a host of attractions. Wander around the ninth largest harbour in the world; dive at Durban Ailwal Shoal, one of the world’s top diving sites; try a spot of surfing; or check out the marine life in the huge uShaka Marine World – Africa’s largest aquarium.
Best Mountain Drive
Scotland, Old Military Road Considered to be one of the best driving roads in the UK, the Old Military Road near Glenshee in Scotland is a must-try for car lovers. The road – the highest public road in the UK, starts at Perth and winds through the Glen Shee valley for 80 miles to Grantownon-Spey. Hairpin bends, thrilling plunges and glorious mountain views dominate the 58 OCEAN VIEW
drive, making this road a destination in its own right. Before setting off, take some time out to explore Perth, the former capital of Scotland. The city sits at the heart of the stunning rural area of Perthshire, on the banks of the 119-mile river Tay – Scotland’s longest river. With a rich history stretching over 800 years, Perth has an abundance of cultural attractions, including Scone Palace, where many Scottish kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny. Perth is also widely recognised and one of Scotland’s culinary capitals, with plenty of picturesque waterfront restaurants to choose from, whether you’re looking for a light bite or a spot of fine dining. Once you set off into the glorious Glen Shee valley, which translates as ‘glen of the fairies’, you will encounter an ancient landscape, a magical gateway to Scotland’s past. Along the route stop off for a hike to stretch your legs. At Glenlochsie Lodge you can follow the old railway line for 8 miles, taking you through beautiful scenery including an old bridge across a waterfall. Grantown-on-Spey, nestled at the end of the Old Military Road, is a traditional Highland town surrounded by ancient
For all the Cassonovas out there, a scenic drive can be irresistible. In Bavaria, Germany, there is a sign-posted route called Romantische Strasse, translating quite simply as Romantic Road. It takes drivers through chocolate-box medieval towns lined with half-timbered houses, Gothic cathedrals, fairytale castles and Boroque palaces. Fly to Munich Airport (1 hour 50 minutes) to pick up the southern part of the road, winding north past the town of Fussen, which is home to one of Germany’s most beautiful castles, Neuschwanstein Castle, jutting up from a rocky crag with elegant spires and Disney-like turrets (it was the inspiration behind Sleeping Beauty’s castle). It was completed in1892, intended as a personal refuge for reclusive King Ludwig II – but he died in 1886 and it was opened to the public immediately. Drive north for 255 miles, passing through mountainous landscapes, alpine forests, cobblestoned villages and the walled towns of Nordlingen, Dinkelsbuhl, Rothenburg ob deer Tauber and Bad Megentheim. At your destination, Wurzburg, you will find a wealth of historical attractions, including the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Residence Palace. The town is set at the heart of Germany’s biggest wine producing area. Here, vines cover 15,260 acres of land in the region. There are a number of wineries around Wurzburg offering wine classes, tours, tastings and festivals.
