OM-G! It’s Here!
New oM-d model prmises the best images in the history of olympus. That’s a bold claim, so let’s take a look. Olympus’ new OM-D E-M1 is more compact than its main rivals, combining the portable dimensions of the Micro Four Thirds format with image quality more common in DSLRs. Thanks to a new Live MOS sensor and nextgeneration processor, it delivers the best images in the history of Olympus cameras. It has an electronic viewfinder with the magnifying power of a high-end, full-frame DSLR and the unique 5-axis image stabilisation system that made its OM-D debut on the E-M5.
The E-M1 is splash, dust and freezeproof and compatible with an ever-growing range of interchangeable lenses. It is available for pre-order in black with a special offer, and stores will be able to offer additional incentives for E-System users from mid- October 2013. THE INSIDER
Saying what you’re thinking and asking the difficult questions. Each week the Insider reports from the front line of our industry So here it is – Merry Christmas! Since my last rant on these, the pages of the foremost imaging retail newspaper in the UK market, (they keep asking me back), we’ve changed seasons, seen a handful of industry events come & go (IFA & IBC) and must now be turning our attention to the big ‘C’. No, not the one that kills you, the one where the portly gent, dressed in red comes down the chimney bearing gifts for one and all. My wonder is, what will be in his sack this year? We’ve had a good few launches of late and some unusual ones at that – Sony mobile Cybershot lens anyone? New smartphones

from Apple, the Note 3 from Samsung and a smattering of compacts from Sony and Nikon make up the crux of the hardware. For me though, as we stand here right now, the outstanding two (that I’d like to see with my name on them) would have to be the new Olympus OM-D E-M1and Canon’s EOS-1D C. What do you think though, have you started ordering for the festive season and if so, what. Get online (Pixel.co.uk) and discuss what’s out there and what you think will be the hit of the season… See you at the Pixel Trade Awards on the 15th November in London (if I’m invited).
JP Distribution have informed us that all BlackRapid Straps and SnapR Cases will now carry a 5 Year Warranty. This is an exclusive upgrade authorised by BlackRapid for UK and Ireland customers only and only when purchased from an authorised reseller, so only stock distributed via JP Distribution will carry this warranty. The warranty will be back-dated to 1st January so all of this year’s BlackRapid customers will be covered.

Get Kitted Out
Body and multiple lens bundles key for DSLR growth In the last few years, we have seen an increase in the number of changeable lenses sold in kits with more than one lens. DSLR lenses sold in kits grew by 7% compared to Q2 2012. In the meantime, lenses sold alone declined by 18%. Knowing that SLR remained stable in volume during the same period, we can easily understand that SLR sold with more than one lens are growing in importance and that these kits probably affect the SLR lenses sold alone in the market. In Q2 2013, body-only SLR sales accounted for 22% of the total SLR market, whereas single lens kits and twin lens kits represented respectively 71% and 7%. Body only sales are more important to specialist and online retailers, representing 25% of SLR sales in consumer electronic stores and mail order houses. Bundled sales of two or more lenses make up 10% of sales in consumer electronic stores. On the other hand, in the mass merchandiser channel, single lens sales have more importance, making up 85% of SLR volumes.
The CSC market has a different split, with more than 82% of their sales coming from one lens kits, 9% coming from twin lens kits and 9% from body only. Looking ahead, we can expect to see cameras sold without lenses remain an important part of the consumer electronic and mail order house business, as well as seeing an increase in kits with more than one lens become more important in all channels. The Fight to Evolve Our High Streets m-Commerce entrepreneur says shops need to embrace a new in-store dynamic
In the wake of Bill Grimsey’s high street reports, many retailers are grasping for new ideas that will help their business compete. Dan Wagner, Technology Entrepreneur and CEO of Powa Technologies, which has implemented payment platforms for major brands and retailers such as Tesco and Superdrug, commented, “The shopping experience on the High Street can be poor compared with the online environment What you are beginning to see from certain retailers like Hollister is a very different, attractive environment that drives consumers into stores. They have proven that the in-store dynamic can be changed dramatically and there is an
opportunity to create a different experience. “New mobile technology offers another way of competing. Retailers have to embrace new ways of operating if they want to survive. The stores should have more flexible layouts with the ability to make purchases anywhere on the premises, as immediacy is key for customers. The challenge is for traditional shops to enrich the physical shopping experience in order to compete with online retailers. The High Street needs to evolve or die.” Dan Wagner’s company is playing its part in changing this scenario with its mPowa mobile payment system which enables merchants to accept payments on the move.

ScreenTec Increases Capacity with Canon Continuing to invest in growth Enhancing productivity and expanding its portfolio of services are top of the agenda for Walesbased Print Service Provider ScreenTec, who have just invested in an Océ Arizona 480 GT from Canon. Inspired by the success achieved with its existing Océ Arizona 350 GT - which has underpinned its growth from a traditional screen printer to a multi-purpose PSP ScreenTec has purchased an Arizona 480 GT to boost output capacity and pave the way for potential new revenue streams. The company is looking to further strengthen its position in both the pointof-sale and industrial print markets. Two key drivers for the company in selecting its new investment were the reliability of the technology and Canon’s back-up service. Duncan Smith, Wide Format Printing Group Director, Canon UK, says: “We’re delighted that ScreenTec has decided to continue its journey with us. It is an example of a company that recognises both the vast potential of the wide format market and how digital printing technology can drive success.”

Smart Thinking
A continuing trend throughout 2013 has been the integration of Wi-Fi and other smart technologies into cameras, enabling customers to use their products in new and exciting ways. Samsung has been at the forefront of these developments, we caught up with Jon Penney, Senior Product Manager, Digital Imaging at Samsung Electronics UK to find out more
How would you define a Smart camera? In our increasingly connected world, cameras are playing a more prominent role. Customers want to capture and share everyday life with their social networks, and want the process to be quick and easy. We identified this requirement and used our expertise in connectivity to introduce a range of Smart Cameras, which provide not only enhanced connectivity, but smart technologies that let customers do more. We recognised that capturing the results in any given shooting situation posed numerous challenges for consumers, and that’s before they even began the process of editing the shots on a computer, resizing and sharing, which can be complicated. We identified the need to simplify the entire digital imaging process and developed our Smart Cameras. To simplify the capture process Samsung developed intelligent scene detection technology which detects the scene and automatically adjusts the settings for the best results. Captured photos can be easily viewed on the camera; photos and videos can be backed up to a computer automatically and saved on a remote server securely; photos and videos can be transferred to smartphones, tablets, sent by email, viewed on a TV and can be shared on Facebook or YouTube. Now the entire digital imaging process takes place directly from your Samsung Smart Camera. With the release of NX300 earlier this year, we introduced the next-generation of Samsung Smart Cameras. SMART CAMERA 2.0 brought with it many new features as well as feature upgrades that allow users to share high quality images directly from the camera, faster and easier than ever before. What are the key features of SMART CAMERA 2.0? The key elements are Auto Share, Mobile Link, Remote Viewfinder, All-share Play,
Social Sharing/Email and Auto Backup. Two of the major challenges that customers face when using their digital camera are sharing and backing up their images safely, Auto Share and Auto Backup make this simplicity itself. AutoShare provides easy, direct sharing and sends photos, as they are taken, directly from the camera to a smartphone or tablet, via a direct WiFi connection. This means that customers don’t need to be near a WiFi hotspot, as they simply use the built-in WiFi capability of the camera to share the images with their smartphone or tablet. The Auto Backup feature allows you to save all the images in the camera to a computer with a single touch, rather than having to remove the memory card or connect a cable. You simply turn the mode dial to WiFi, select the Auto Backup icon and then follow the on-screen instructions. You can send up to 1000 files, giving you complete peace of mind.
“The Samsung SMART CAMERA App combines three separate apps into one, enabling customers to connect their camera and smart device in a single touch. It integrates AutoShare, MobileLink and Remote Viewfinder into one app.”

SAMSUNG
How easy is it for customers to use the camera with their smartphone or tablet? It’s really easy. The Samsung SMART CAMERA App combines three separate apps into one, enabling customers to connect their camera and smart device in a single touch. It integrates AutoShare, MobileLink and Remote Viewfinder into one app. The MobileLink feature sends photos to a smartphone or tablet with a single touch. Simply select the WiFi mode from the mode dial, choose the MobileLink icon and then either select the images on the camera or use the App on your smartphone or tablet to select which files to send. This brilliant feature eliminates the need to transfer images to a computer first, letting you share images on the go. The Remote Viewfinder function lets you remotely control your camera from a smartphone or tablet for a distance of up to 10 meters. The intuitive App enables you to use the larger screen on your phone or tablet as the camera’s viewfinder, letting you preview images, adjust camera settings, zoom in and out, frame the scene and tag the shot with the location - all from your phone or tablet, wirelessly. It’s a great way to put yourself in the shot for a group picture. Is the SMART CAMERA App compatible with all models? The SMART CAMERA App works with all Samsung camera models manufactured in 2013. For models prior to this, customers can use the individual apps – MobileLink and Remote Viewfinder - available on Google Play and iOS app stores. You mentioned All-Share Play earlier. What does that do? All-Share Play is a great way to share content with your other devices at home, making it easier to view photos with family and friends, for example. Again, you just turn the mode dial on your camera to WiFi mode and select All-Share Play. If you have a Samsung TV you’ll be prompted on the TV screen that the device is trying to connect with your TV and you can simply use the TV remote to view images or start a slideshow.
With all those mode and options, can’t things get a little confusing? It’s true that there’s lots of options, but it’s the same simple steps to access the Smart features – using the mode dial to access WiFi mode and then selecting the option you want from the seven available. On the NX1100, NX2000 and NX300 we’ve made it easier still by incorporating a Direct Link button on the camera. You can simply register which WiFi option you want to use, and then just press the Direct Link button to activate it, so uploading your shots to Facebook is just a simple button press away. You mentioned Facebook, is it easy to post your images or email them from the camera? Absolutely, you can send photos or videos with text via email from the camera. Simply select the images, enter an email address and personal message and send. With the Social Network Sharing & Cloud uploading options, you can easily upload directly to social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Picasa, or archive images to the cloud right from the camera, letting you connect and share instantly. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about? It’s become increasingly common for
manufacturers to provide new features and functionality to their products via firmware updates. With the NX300 we included a smart way for customers to keep their camera up to date. The software upgrade notification utilises the WiFi network in your home or office to ensure optimal camera performance is maintained. The camera will display a pop-up message when a software update is available for the camera. This might provide additional functionality, menu improvements or on occasions, minor bug fixes. You can then simply connect the camera to a computer to launch the i-Launcher program provided with the camera and then select Firmware Upgrade. The i-Launcher will retrieve the update and help you install it, ensuring you always have the very best performance. www.samsung.com/uk

What Next for Microsoft and Nokia?
Victor Basta, Managing Director of Magister Advisors, advisors to the technology industry, talks us through Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Nokia “Microsoft effectively ‘acquired’ Nokia several months ago when it entered into a deal to license Windows Mobile to Nokia, making Nokia entirely reliant on Microsoft’s software for its mobile future. The burning question, of course, is whether Nokia’s gradual erosion in market share, value and perception can be reversed. Microsoft must be betting that with more control they will be able to reengineer the business and gain market share. There are challenges in the way though.
There is fierce competition in the market and mobility has changed fundamentally as the PC market changed when Microsoft entered it in the early 80s. “This still leaves the strategic question of how Microsoft will be competitive in the mobile space... an attempt to simply catch up to Apple is not likely to succeed Nokia employs 30,000 people, which will make integration a costly, time-consuming and blood-letting exercise. To me, this feels like a clean up deal at the end of an era.”

AV & COMPUTING
Midwich and EIZO Reunited Back together after 13 years!
Some relationships are just meant to be and 13 years after sister companies Midwich Thame and EIZO UK, formerly PDS were sold by Raab Karcher (part of the Veba group) to Avnet, they have reunited to work together once again. Back in 2000, the electronics side of Raab Karcher was sold for around $2billion to Avnet, Shroders and Arrow. Of the 20 companies involved, only Midwich and PDS, which became EIZO UK, are still trading. “This is a great fit”, said Darren Lewitt, AV Director at Midwich. “I remember the MEMEC days in the early 90s before the Raab Karcher acquisition and although the scales of both operations have changed, both companies still have a similar ethos. He added: “The MEMEC way became the Midwich way for us and that methodology still exists today, a strategy of pro-active market marking for profitable growth. EIZO also fits perfectly into Midwich’s new Small Format
Display strategy and we are delighted to have this exclusive distribution opportunity.” EIZO sells high-spec display equipment into verticals that demand clear, high-definition systems, such as medical, financial trading, design, publishing and video-editing. 20 months ago specialist-monitor vendor EIZO called time on a 20-year relationship with Avnet to once again set up its own operation in the hunt for new partners to expand its channel proposition. A 15-strong team moved from Avnet to the new firm under TUPE regulations at the start of 2012. At the same time its own distribution warehousing operation moved out of its current home at a former Bell Micro base in the Midlands to a managed facility. Robert Smyth, Head of Channel at EIZO, said: “It’s great to see our partnership with Midwich come full circle and we look forward to a highly successful association with Midwich once again. Being a specialist distributor, they will help us expand into new areas where our high-definition systems excel.”

Pixel speaks to Lee Palmer the new Kodak Alaris, to explore the impact of changes in the Kodak business on the UK trade. Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Lee. Firstly, there have been many changes to the Kodak businesses during the company’s restructure. Could you clarify where we are now? Eastman Kodak Company will move forward as a commercial imaging business. Kodak Alaris is a separate entity that includes the businesses Eastman Kodak, as part of its Chapter 11 emergence, sold to the KPP. Kodak Alaris is made up of our Personalised Imaging and Document Imaging businesses. Those businesses include: Document Imaging, which delivers • Award-winning scanners and capture software; • Information management platforms; • An expanding range of professional services; And Personalised Imaging, which includes four business lines: • RSS, a worldwide leadership in instant printing with the retail instant photo kiosks offering consumers personalised photo products; • Film Capture, which includes some of the world’s most popular and recognisable award-winning still film for professionals and consumers; • Paper and Output Systems: the broadest portfolio of high quality media, including traditional photographic paper, for a variety of professional print operations and workflow solutions for photo specialty retailers, professional and wholesale labs; • EIS, a digital souvenir photography services and solutions at theme parks, iconic destinations & resorts. What does this mean for Kodak’s existing customers at trade and consumer levels?

For our customers and partners, in the near term, very little will change. They can still obtain the same great products, services and solutions they know and expect from the Kodak brand. In the long term, our goal is to bring more relevant innovation to the market, at a faster speed to not only meet, but also anticipate their needs. What effects will this have on Kodak Express as a franchise? Hopefully, only a positive effect. The Kodak Express channel is a vibrant, important channel for us and in most countries, the face of our brand and it will remain an important part of our new organisation. Will Kodak Alaris be taking on staff from what was the Kodak personalised and document imaging business, or will a new team be brought in? The Kodak Alaris team comprises employees from the Personalised Imaging and Document Imaging staff. There are references to speed and quick reactions in the Kodak Alaris statement. It’s sometimes said that Kodak’s difficulties stemmed from the company not being fast enough when reacting to changes in the industry, such as the switch to digital: will Alaris be better placed to deal with future changes? Our name reflects our philosophy. We will preserve the heritage and legacy of the Kodak brand, while embodying greater speed and agility to meet market needs and changes. We’re a new company, free of legacy obligations, made up of strong, profitable businesses, with a new owner that is committed to long term investment. That combination places us on a future path better equipped to not only manage, but take advantage of future market shifts. How much marketing will be done to make consumers aware of these changes? We will continue to market Kodak-branded

products and services under our perpetual license, so Kodak will be the brand most visible to those buying our products. The continuity of our business communications and marketing is important for our customers and partners, as well as consumers. At the same time, we want them to know and understand that we are now an independent company backed by the financial strength of KPP. Is a license for the Kodak brand part of the deal? Will you still offer consumer products and services? Absolutely. The consumer businesses are an incredibly important part of Kodak Alaris. This is why it was even more important that we secure the rights to use the Kodak brand to ensure consumers can still engage with the products and services from a brand they know and trust. We will continue to innovate in the consumer imaging space to provide the best consumer experience with the pre-eminent photo brand. We have a perpetual license to use the Kodak brand, which includes a worldwide exclusive license to use certain sub brands, trademarks, graphic designs, product names, and domain names in connection with the products and services included in the asset sale and their extensions. The Kodak brand is a tremendously valuable asset in the industries in which it participates. Are we likely to see any revolutionary new products, or is it more a continuation of business as-is? While we can’t disclose future offerings, we can say that we’re excited about our pipeline of new products and services that leverage the framework we already have in place, and create exciting opportunities for our partners, customers and consumers. We can tell you that this will include new mobile applications for consumers, greater business opportunities for retail partners, and new solutions for the enterprise. www.kodak.co.uk
