Imaging Matters
Camera capabilities now the second most important factor in phone purchases A significant portion of consumers buying a new mobile phone are now actively choosing a model based on its imaging capabilities, figures show. InfoTrends latest report, the 2013 Mobile Imaging End-User Apple Products Survey, found that 92% of people who own a mobile phone with a camera on board are using it to take photographs. Although the survey included all phones classed as camera phones, the share of respondents who owned smart phones increased significantly in 2013. “Today’s consumers tend to be connected all the time,” says Carrie Sylvester, Consultant for InfoTrends’ Consumer Services: “I urge traditional camera vendors to get on the smartphone bandwagon, because consumers still focus on cameras.” The embedded camera is the second most
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
important feature in the purchase decision when choosing a phone. Consumers will be turning their attention to features that enhance the imaging experience, and handset vendors should prioritise incorporating this into future products. Beyond the embedded camera, the survey indicates that vendors should focus on mobile apps. Instagram is not only of the more popular editing apps, but it also has become its own “Social Network” that has young photographers taking and engaging with their own and friends’ photos. Sylvester also recommends that digital camera and mobile phone vendors offer users their own branded app, or support the more popular apps that allow digital photos to be edited and shared.

THE INSIDER
Saying what you’re thinking and asking the difficult questions. Each week the Insider reports from the front line of our industry It’s tough out there. A staggering amount of action camera technology seems to be flooding into the UK market in recent months. This is a sector that, whilst comparatively small (by comparison) to a photo/CE specialist dealer, it can’t be ignored that the growth and demand is outstripping pretty well everything else on the shelf. It also seems that during the first part of this explosion of interest in image making, the photo/CE specialist dealer has been largely overlooked in favour of bike shops, surf shops and outdoor stores. I have to scratch my head and wonder why on earth we are so late to the party? Market leaders GoPro have only just added Imaging and Consumer Electrical Specialist to their

application form as an option and only very recently assigned a bloke to do the rounds (Hi David G). These is some incredible gear coming through too – Rollei are bang on the money with their range, Nikon have just launched the 1-AW in the CSC category and there’s already a strong heritage from the likes of Pentax, Olympus and Panasonic. I guess this category might be overlooked by some of our ‘up market’ dealers but I can tell you that the margins are good and the demand is there. I would rather invite the business into my store and show this (primarily) young blood what image making is all about. See you at the Pixel Trade Awards on the 15th November in London (if I’m invited). Join me to discuss online at www.pixel.co.uk and also on the Pixel Magazine LinkedIn group.

The Mini 90 produces credit card sized prints within seconds of clicking the shutter, making it the perfect camera for weddings, parties, birthdays and a host of other events. Gabriel Da Costa, Product Manager

for Fujifilm, explained more: “Instant print cameras are the perfect antidote to the disposable digital age and the format illustrates the renaissance that film photography is enjoying at the moment. Its design obviously gives a nod to Fujifilm’s X Range of digital cameras and combines retro styling with cutting-edge technology. The Mini 90 appeals to both the ‘happy snapper’ who enjoys the fun of an instant camera and the more serious photographer who can experiment with the various modes to produce some truly great results.” The Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic is available now with an RRP of £129.99 body only, or £139.99 including 20 sheets of instant film. We spoke to Fujifilm’s David Honey about the trend for instant printing on page 18.

Argos and eBay Connect on Collection Click and collect format could be “the shape of things to come” With the announcement that Argos and eBay have formed a ‘click-and-collect’ partnership where online shoppers will be able to order items from eBay and pick them up from Argos shops, the worlds of Internet shopping and the High Street have been brought a step closer. The announcement offers convenience to the online shopper but also means they will return to the High Street to collect their purchases, offering hard pressed retailers an opportunity to engage with them. Dan Wagner, eCommerce and mobile commerce expert has long been a champion for the increasing use of technology in the retail sector in a bid to introduce a flavour of online shopping to bricks and mortar stores. He said: “Partnerships such as this reflect the need that shoppers have long been crying out for. Shoppers want speed and convenience and an approach to retail that reflects the progression that is much needed. Our shopping districts need radical solutions to tempt consumers back in increasing numbers and measures such as this will be a big boost for the high street. “This deal will not be a silver bullet that will cure the ills of town centre shopping overnight, though. There must be a technology driven revolution whereby stores create a proliferation
of ways through which they can engage with their customers. Mobile payment and clickand-collect represent two of the ways retail is changing for the better but there must be other initiatives that are introduced with urgency to bring shopping into the modern era. The removal of a linear shopping format with redesigned shop floors that allow for browsing and purchasing to be interlinked will make a huge difference. Also, an increased amount of personalisation with bespoke recommendations that mimic online stores will also enhance the experience for shoppers. The pressure on the high street to evolve will therefore remain.”

In addition, GoPro announced several new mounting accessories that further enable

GoPro’s HERO3 camera has been named the best-selling camera globally in consumer markets, and the best-selling camera to professional production companies, on a volume basis. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recently awarded the HERO3 camera an Emmy for its contributions to filmmaking and television production.

Books on Demand Polish printers capitalises on print-ondemand growth
Books Factory, based in Poland, has invested in a Screen Truepress Jet520 single-pass, reel-to-cut and stack inkjet printer to capitalise on the growing publishing trend of producing books ‘on demand’. Before the installation of the Truepress Jet520, Books Factory had limited its digital production to cut-sheet machines. Books Factory has an international list of publishing clients and it understands the need to change the services it provides in order to continue to grow. Like many printers supplying the publishing industry, Books

NX LEVEL PERFORMANCE There’s been a flurry of Compact System Cameras introduced in 2013. One that has won high praise from reviewers and customers alike has been Samsung’s NX300. We caught up with Jon Penney, Senior Product Manager, Digital Imaging at Samsung Electronics UK for find out more
What do you think has been the key to the NX300’s success? I think it’s been a combination of several key factors. First and foremost, it’s a great looking camera. The design team have done a brilliant job to create something both stylish and retrolooking, yet with simple lines and button layout. At the same time, it’s packed with our latest technology to ensure users get outstanding results every time. Central to the NX300’s outstanding imaging performance is the brand new 20.3 Megapixel APS-CMOS sensor, capable of capturing high quality detailed images with sharp, life-like colours that are crisp and clear in all light conditions. The wide ISO range (ISO10025600) further improves performance, letting users capture beautifully balanced images in even the darkest conditions. A brand new Hybrid Auto Focus (AF) system also delivers fast, accurate phase and contrast detection, while the 1/6000sec shutter speed and 8.6fps continuous shooting mode ensure you never miss a moment. Samsung’s unique in-house developed DRIMe IV imaging engine provides outstanding developments in speed, and image quality enabling better colour reproduction and greater noise reduction, as well as support for full 1080p HD video capture in both 2D and 3D, when combined with Samsung’s new 45mm 2D / 3D lens. Who are you targeting with the NX300? The NX300 appeals to a really broad range of photographers. Whilst the high-speed framerate and AF will appeal to many enthusiasts, the flexibility and clarity offered by the screen make it very appealing to those upgrading from a compact, and the built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, together with the host of smart shooting modes, have proven popular with more social and event photographers looking to share their images quickly. Most compact camera systems use contrast detection autofocus, which is incredibly accurate. Our new Hybrid Auto Focus system uses 247 contrast detection points and the performance is further enhanced by the addition of a 105-point phase-detection system. This system, more typically seen in DSLR cameras, offers incredible speed. Our ground-breaking hybrid system combines
“The NX300’s Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to share photos instantly and securely between their camera and smartphone or tablet” the best of both technologies to deliver fast, accurate focusing every time, so you never miss a moment. The screen is really impressive too. It’s a 3.31” AMOLED screen which makes capturing and reviewing your images a pleasure, while the hybrid touch screen and 5-way manual key interface is simple and intuitive to use. The tilt display makes it easier than ever to take high and low angle shots, letting you capture your world from any angle. Customers find it really useful on days out. They don’t have to carry a heavy bag of gear with them and they can capture great shots of flowers and other wildlife from a low level, without having to lie on the ground or use a tripod. Using manual focusing you can use the peaking function to help ensure you get pin-sharp shots, and using the touchscreen you can simply pinch to zoom on captured images to check critical focus. It’s also really easy for beginners to get great
results. Using the camera’s Smart Mode, users can choose from 14 different settings, such as Creative Shot, Landscape, Light Trace or Action Freeze which will automatically adjust parameters such as aperture and shutter speed in order to obtain the best shot for the desired situation. Is it easy to share images from the camera? Absolutely. The NX300’s Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to share photos instantly and securely between their camera and smart phone or tablet. To connect a smart phone to the camera, users simply need to download the Samsung Smart Camera App., which is available for both Android and iOS devices, onto their smart phone or tablet and follow the easy steps to create a secure connection with the camera. The NX300 will be able to detect and auto-connect to the smart phone wirelessly

whenever any of the Smart Camera features are activated. These include AutoShare; which automatically sends high-quality photos to your smart phone for safe keeping, and Mobile Link; which allows users to select and transfer images or album from the camera directly to your smartphone at their leisure. The Smart Camera App. also features a Remote Viewfinder function for the NX300, allowing for even more inventive and exciting photography. The NX300’s enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity also lets users share images with friends and family directly from the camera via social networking sites using the cameras one-touch DIRECT LINK hot key. Alternatively, images can be automatically backed up or stored in the cloud through AllShare Play ensuring they are always safe and easily accessible. What activities have you been doing to support the NX300? We’ve undertaken a comprehensive campaign, encompassing a heavyweight national press advertising campaign featuring Usain Bolt and we’ve recently introduced lens and warranty promotions. Customers who purchase an NX300 between the 22nd August and 31st October can claim a free Samsung 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens via redemption, whilst customers who purchase an NX300 between the 22nd August and the 31st December can claim a free two year warranty extension, giving them complete peace of mind for three years. Both promotions are further supported by national and specialist press activity and pos materials are also available for our dealers. Finally, we’ve partnered with Adobe® to include a full version of the award-winning Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 4 in the box, which offers customers complete creative freedom to manipulate their images. Enthusiasts who have shot RAW files to take advantage of the high performance APS-C sized CMOS sensor will be able to make precise adjustments to perfect their images, whilst beginners will enjoy being able to make simple adjustments with speed, such as cropping and straightening shots, for example. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about the NX300? It’s been a really successful model for us and I’m delighted that it’s proven so popular with photographers and press alike. The NX300 continues to win awards including the prestigious EISA Award and TIPA awards (EISA - Best Compact System Camera 20132014, TIPA - Best CSC Advanced). It’s available in black, brown and white in a range of kit variants.

Key Feature Summary Advanced 20.3M APS-C CMOS Sensor The 20.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor with Phase detection AF delivers highquality images and lifelike colours. The hybrid AF system combines both into a single sensor which allows you to shoot accurate and sharply detailed images faster. 8.6fps Continuous Shooting Continuously shoot at an ultra-fast rate of 8.6 frames per second. The advanced autofocus system brings crystal clarity to fast-moving subjects and the short shutter release lag helps you capture the fleeting moment before the subject moves out of frame.
1/6000s Super Speed Shutter The Samsung SMART CAMERA NX300, which boasts a shutter speed of 1/6000s, the fastest in its class. With that kind of shutter speed—and the fast autofocus system—you can capture the moments that matter. 3.31” AMOLED Tilt Display See and capture the world differently. Online Shopping to Hit £50bn by 2018
E-retail is set to grow by almost 50% over the next five years to be worth over £50bn in 2018, when one pound in every seven spent on retail will be made online, according to new research from Verdict In a survey of over 10,000 online shoppers, only 4% more people considered physical shopping to be more enjoyable than online, compared to a 25% gap 18 months ago. “Rather than push online spend outdoors, the rapid adoption of touch screen tablets and smart phones has moved online shopping into the living room,” explains Verdict Lead Analyst Patrick O’Brien. “67% said they shopped from their living room, indicating that second screening – browsing websites while watching TV – has had a major impact. This, together with the ability to browse on smart phones wherever you are, and social media, has made online shopping a much more immersive and interactive experience than it was only a few years ago, when more shoppers tended to be restricted to desktops typically located away from the living room.” Verdict’s e-retail data is driven by a survey of over 10,000 online shoppers who were asked about their shopping habits in March 2013.

Size Matters
Commitment to larger screen sizes prompts market share growth for display maker TPV
The trend towards bigger displays is unbroken in the monitor market. According to the latest figures from Meko, 27” displays have reached a growth of 17 percent in Europe during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period last year. Together, AOC and MMD, subsdiaries of TPV and license partner for monitors of the Philips brand, Europe-wide occupy first place in the 27” segment. Reaching the top position is accompanied by a doubling of the market share from eight percent in the second quarter of 2012 to currently 16 percent. The growth in larger screen sizes means that
MMD and AOC have been able to expand their joint overall position in the monitor market. “There is a trend to larger displays. Our market success demonstrates that our innovations fulfil our customers’ needs,” explains Thomas Schade, Vice President EMEA at AOC and MMD. In the UK, the two brands have improved their successful development. In the second quarter their combined market share was close to ten percent . Together both brands’ large display market share in the second quarter was 16 percent which represents the number 2 position.

Each quarter, CU provided the opportunity to earn qualifying points for the prizes via hitting individual sales targets and executing marketing activities. More than 150 Adobe resellers entered the race, with the 12 eventual winners coming from 10 CU Adobe partners: Colyer; Escape IT; GBM; Grey Matter; Kaizen; KRCS; QBS; Square; Studio Four Four; Western. News Everybody’s doing it! A third of the entire UK population regularly uses some kind of tablet device, according to new data collected by eMarketer. Their results indicate that 20 million people in the UK used a tablet within the last month. Some of these will be families and friends sharing devices, so these results may not exactly correlate with tablet sales figures... Nonetheless, eMarketer believes that by 2017 more than half the population will use tablets on a regular basis.
The Next Nexus Google’s next handset - the Nexus 5 - is to be released by the end of October and looks to clock in at about half the price of Apple’s iPhone 5S. Techradar claimed a source has said that the Google-designed handset would match the iPhone 5S almost identically in terms of specification, despite the cheaper price tag. Rumours on what technology might be sacrificed for that price saving tend to favour Google leaving out the fingerprint-recognition security, so the Nexus 5 could have some seriously highend imaging technology if it’s to be on a par with the iPhone.

tHe BiG interVieW Pixel speaks to Fujifilm’s David Honey, Director of Photo Imaging, on the occasion of the launch of the new Instax, to find out why the instant print market’s still a big part of photo for Fujifilm What trends influenced the design of the new Instax model? If you look at the current 3D design of the cameras in the range today, you’ll see that most of them have a ‘fun’ look and feel. The Mini 8’s and Mini 7’s before it are specifically targetted to a younger audience. The Mini 25 looks a little different and the Mini 50 looks even more ‘serious’. The market for cameras generally has seen a resurgence of a more traditional looking camera (witness the X range of Fujifilm Finepix cameras as a good example). ‘Retro’ is a design style that’s really popular at the moment because it echoes a time of style and quality with a touch of historic glamour. It’s an anti-dote in a way to modern product design. ‘Retro’ also has a certain coolness about it, like Zippo lighters, RayBan sunglasses and leather luggage. We wanted to present the new Instax Mini 90 in this way, and wanted it to appeal to a wider range of customers. With the expectation of more functions and the rather classic look, we think it makes for a really appealing camera. Is instant photography something there’s still a lot of demand for? There are still some quite obvious ‘functional’ uses of instant photography... in forensic photography for example, where it’s vital to get a quick and non-digital image. Photographers are still using instant for shoots where lighting and framing checks are important, and there’s quite a large use for instant photography in promotional work. Abercrombie and Fitch, for example, are large users of instant photography for ‘front of house’ customer pictures. So there are plenty of situations out there in which people still favour instant photography. The broad consumer market has blossomed of late with the teenage market buying Instax in

large numbers because of some of the reasons already mentioned. It’s a little bit cool, and it’s a so different to digital photography. There’s a sense of fun and theatre which you just don’t get with a smart phone, and of course the image is physical and you can stick it up anywhere - on the wall, on your exercise book, on the fridge or wherever. Many of the younger customers, who’ve bought an Instax camera, have either never used one before (although they may remember some of old brand names like Polaroid), or may have never taken a photograph except on a camera phone. This makes Instax even more cool! How are these consumers influenced by things like effects available in-camera? One of the reasons why the new Mini 90 has some additional creative functions is because of expectation. A reasonably ‘photo-aware’ person may already be using for example, Instagram or even Photoshop and so is quite familiar with creative photo functions and might expect to see this type of thing on a new camera. Digital cameras, and Camera phones have made the process of image capture really quite cheap (after you’ve spent £400 on the phone that is)... you can snap away to your hearts content as long as you like and each additional picture doesn’t cost a penny. This has changed the behaviour of consumers and they are now much more likely to experiment with the way they take pictures than in the past, where just about every frame had to be carefully thought out. How is the disposable camera business these days? Pretty good I would say. The market has tailed off over the last few years because of the very rapid advances in reasonable quality camera phones. This makes a lot of sense and is quite obvious. However, we have noticed that as smart phones have become more expensive and desirable, there’s a reluctance to take them on what one might consider to be ‘more

hazardous’ photo assignments. For those of you readers who have teenage children you’ll know what I mean - Reading, Lattitude, Rototom, Isle of Wight and all the other festivals during the summer are a guaranteed way to lose a very expensive phone, so it’s better to take a single use camera! It also has to be said that the summer of 2012 was a bit rubbish. 2013 had less rain, and a lot more sun. This gets people out having fun, and this is the very best elixir for photo! Might a resurgence in instant printing prompt an increase in the popularity of more traditional prints? Yes, you’re probably right. Even now a lot of people don’t quite realise how easy it is to print - in store or on-line, so any additional recognition that photo can be ‘physical’ is a good thing. We would love everyone to print - it’s the only really secure way to archive your images, and the best thing about a print is that you only need your eyes to see it - no download, no internet access, no file finding on various discs or cards and no adapters required. Is this an area you intend to expand on more in the coming months? You’ll have to wait and see, although I can say that we have a very dedicated intention to continue to make new an innovative camera and printing products. How does this fit with/complement Fujifilm’s other areas of business? Image capture is a big thing for us. Not just film and single use cameras, and instant cameras, and digital cameras. We are also a force in the provision of image sensors and scanners for the medical industry. Even though Fujifilm is now quite a large and diverse company, it’s fair to say that photography is still in our hearts and something that we value very much indeed.
