A GAME OF TWO HALVES Tablets set to make up half of the PC market next year, outselling every other form Crucially for our market, they’re also the only form that reliably includes a camera. Whilst this has been seen as a threat to camera manufacturers, the boost in devices per household with a camera on board offers a huge amount of promise to the image editing software and printing industries, who are already predicting growth based on more photos being taken than ever before. And with the help of third parties, mobile devices are now used as camera triggers, second screens and editing facilities. Apps from camera manufacturers; tablet/mobile device based photo accessories, from start up companies specialising in tablet/phone tripods

and lenses right through to Sony’s Cybershot QX10 demonstrate that those developing the products see mobile devices as something photo enthusiasts are using alongside other kit, rather than to replace it. According to Canalys, the personal computing market will grow next year, despite marked declines in notebook and desktop sales… declines that will be made up by the growth of tablets. 285 million tablets are estimated to be sold in 2014, growing to 396 million in 2017. Short of any huge surprises, the market leaders will still be Apple and Samsung, which makes Samsung’s continued enthusiasm for – and investment in – the camera market all the more reassuring.

Reasons to be Cheerful

The Bank says things are looking up for the UK at last, but what does this mean for our trade?

“In the United Kingdom, recovery has finally taken hold. The economy is growing robustly as lifting uncertainty and thawing credit conditions start to unlock pent-up demand.” Those were the words of the Bank of England’s latest quarterly inflation report, in which Mark Carney predicted accelerating growth for the UK economy. The unemployment rate was reported as having fallen from to 7.6%, but Mr Carney has said the Bank will not consider raising interest rates until the jobless rate falls to 7% or below. So, consumer and business confidence should really start improving, which can only be good news. Lee Mansfield, MD of Pixel, comments: “It’s sensible to be cautious with our optimism, but this is the best news I have heard for our trade in a long time. News that the UK is now properly on track for recovery will improve consumer

Mark Carney

confidence, meaning people will be spending out on purchases they’ve held back from for a while. This is likely to provide a huge boost for consumer electronics in particular. Combined with increased investment in marketing and promotions from UK businesses looking to ride this wave of positivity, we could be looking at the best festive season we’ve had in a long time.

THE INSIDER

Jufi Supports X-Series with Magazine

Saying what you’re thinking and asking the difficult questions. Each week the Insider reports from the front line of our industry The new black? US Trends gain substantial traction in the UK As with other US imports such as, trick or treating on Halloween and as suspected by yours truly, UK retailers are jumping up and down at the recent successes from our plagiarism of the big day that our friends across the pond call ‘Black Friday’. Now of course, on paper, this event should be as relevant to the UK as the La Tomatina which takes place annually in Valencia. Traditionally, Black Friday is a day that falls after thanksgiving and a day where pretty much nobody goes to work. As such, it’s intrinsically linked with customers that have no relevance to UK consumers. The American retail sector have tapped into a fantastic opportunity to sell their wares and to kick off the festive shopping just a few weeks prior to Christmas. Perhaps it’s curiosity, perhaps it’s because we’re incapable of resisting the next ‘fad’, or perhaps it’s simply due to the amount of genuine deals

Interactive publication offers more for X-Series photographers

that have been promoted to coincide with this alien American holiday? John Lewis has reported weekly sales rising to £147 million in the week to November 30, including a 35.7 percent surge in online sales. Yes, you could argue that parts of this jump are down to the new Xbox/Playstation etc but it cannot be ignored that Black Friday deals have also contributed. The bottom line is this – any retailer in the UK who thinks that these trends are beneath them, must need their head looked at. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, It’s the same old story – move, adapt and capitalise or stagnate and die! It makes no sense to not buy into such events, be they invented on our shores or otherwise. Opportunities to encourage bodies in-store (virtual or otherwise) should be welcomed with open arms and if not for 2013, should be planned into annual campaigns in the future. Fujifilm has launched a digital magazine to help X-series users get more from their cameras. The free magazine is available in six languages and can be viewed through web browsers and both iOS and Android devices for a truly universal appeal. Commenting on the launch, Lucy Edwards, Fujifilm UK’s marketing manager for digital cameras, said: “Fujifilm has a long history of being at the forefront of digital innovation and producing this interactive magazine underlines our commitment to delivering creative solutions for our customers.” Every issue of Fujifilm X Magazine is interactive, which enables users to swipe through images, watch videos and explore cameras in detail. In addition to the interactive functionality, each issue will contain inspirational photographs and interviews from X-series users, advice on how to get more from X-series cameras, plus equipment tests, news and fantastic competitions to win high-value prizes. Highlights from the launch issue include an interview with fashion photographer and X-Pro1 user Alex Lambrechts, how to get more from the Fujifilm Film Simulation modes and a gallery of stunning portrait images from X-series users around the world. The debut issue is available now.

A Gift in the Hand

…is worth two in the cloud, it would appear, but are Indies in our trade missing out on the trend bringing life back to high street shopping?

An increasing amount of evidence is pointing to gift cards being a major money spinner this festive season. YouGov and The UK Gift Card & Voucher Association say that very nearly half of Christmascelebrating consumers will be spending money on them this year. If you don’t offer gift cards or vouchers, you could be missing out on your slice on this £4.7 billion market, which is growing apace (by a record 8% in the third quarter of 2013).

and Christmas 2013 is on track to be one of the strongest for the industry to date.” Despite increasing trends towards online shopping, it appears consumers still prefer physical gift cards and vouchers to be spent in store. Half of consumers surveyed by YouGov said they’d prefer a plastic gift card and a further 14% liked the idea of a paper voucher best, whilst just 20% said they’d like an e-voucher that can be redeemed online. It’s a sentiment that seems to be echoed throughout the independent and small multiple photo trade, with online voucher options “Customers do seem to prefer physical gift generally dismissed as good vouchers as opposed to codes, when it only for flash promotions. comes to actually giving a gift” “Online vouchers are fine as far as they go but physical vouchers - the ones people Andrew Johnson, director-general of the buy for gifts in cards - are far more popular!” UKGCVA, explains: “We recently predicted agreed Dave Rasch, Phoenix Photographic. that £2 billion will be spent on gift cards and “We do offer gift vouchers to customers,” vouchers in the run up to Christmas. We have explains Andy Steel of Park Cameras. “In terms seen their popularity grow over recent years, of voucher codes/online codes, we do and are

‘tis the Season to be Under Stocked? Retailers keeping stocks low to avoid carrying costs or having to discount

2013 is shaping up to be the most under stocked Christmas in recent years, according to KPMG, and that could be a great move for retailers. High street and out of town retailers alike have slashed their stock holdings after concerns they will have to carry the can on costs if shoppers remain cautious about their spending this Christmas. David McCorquodale, Head of Retail at KPMG said: “Retailers don’t want to be left holding the baby this Christmas and so most have kept stock holdings down to a real minimum. They are desperate to avoid the deep discounting of previous years when a

combination of over ordering and depressed consumer spending left too much surplus stock on the shelves and they had to slash prices to shift it. “Improved management of stock means the most successful retailers on the high street won’t need to discount as extensively this year, so it’s likely shoppers will only find real bargains at the less successful players, whose ranges aren’t as good or who have over ordered.” As well as concerns over depressed

material, which allows easy cleaning and lengthens the life of the bag, which is water repellent Inside the bag there’s also a bungee cord to help keep it free from dust and droplets of water. This series comes in two variations, the M100N with a price of £82.20 (SRP) and the M200N costing £88.68 (SRP).

Fujifilm Instax Stars in Lily Allen Video Social Media boost for new product The Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic, has made a starring role in the video to promote Lily Allen’s new single, ‘Hard Out Here’. Gabriel Da Costa, product manager for Fujifilm, explained more: “Lily is a keen fan of our Instax cameras. We see Lily as being a perfect fit for our brand, she’s edgy, outspoken and fun. Fujifilm plans to use the video as a platform to build the Instax social media presence. “Facebook and Twitter are the perfect shop window for Instax and Lily is hugely popular online with over 4.3 million Twitter followers “ consumer spending, the dwindling availability of credit insurance has seen retailers finance the purchase of stock themselves, which has increased pressure to hold as little stock as possible. It has also had an impact on the relationship between supplier and retailer as they work together to manage supply lines. McCorquodale said: “Retailers tell me they are carrying 3% to 4% less stock in comparison to this time last year. This might sounds like a small percentage, but this reduction will save these retailers millions in wasted margin.” McCorquodale concluded: “The end game has to be a shop that looks stocked on Christmas Eve, but supported by a storeroom that’s nearly empty. This cut throat approach to costs means the cold reality is some shoppers, who hold off for a discount, may simply not get what they want this Christmas.”

“This reduction will save these retailers millions in wasted margin”

Leica Takes Over Sinar

Takeover completed years after share acquisition

Leica Camera AG, has finalised its takeover of Sinar Photography AG, Zurich, the Swiss manufacturer of view cameras, following acquiring a majority share in 2006. The Sinar product portfolio offers everything from cameras and lenses to digital backs, shutter systems and workflow software. With this takeover, Leica Camera AG completes the company’s portfolio in the high-end digital camera segment and further expands its position in the market for professional photographic equipment. Synergies will also develop in the fields of digital technology, sales and distribution and in customer care. Leica now possesses a complete product portfolio from a medium format digital camera system to digital view cameras and, as a result of the takeover, is now the only full range provider of digital camera systems in formats larger than the 35 mm Leica full-frame format.

SOLD! Grays’ customer takes home first Nikon DF

The Nikon Df arrived in stores this week, and the first photographic outlet to kick off sales of the new camera was Grays of Westminster, the exclusively Nikon retailer, who sold the first Nikon Df camera in the UK to Mr Michael Eleftheriades on 28th November. Eager to add the new camera to his collection, Mr Eleftheriades placed his order as soon as the official announcement was made earlier this month. Mr Eleftheriades said, “The attention to service for which Grays of Westminster is noted – unobtrusive but meticulous and delivered with warmth and style – is delightfully personal and very British. It is a real Aladdin’s cave.” Gray Levett added: “The teaser trailers for the Nikon Df generated anticipation which in turn created a real demand from customers.”

PRINT

Doing Away with Downtime New Formats Clever tech spells the end of delays for printers

Inca Vision lets Inca remotely and regularly monitor machines, and in many cases, catch issues before the customers decide to call for engineer service. “The last thing any company wants is downtime. Inca Vision is able to detect possible failures before they happen, offering customers the opportunity to proactively service their machines and avoid costly delays,” says John Mills, Inca Digital CEO. By gathering data from machines globally on a daily basis, Inca engineers can conduct remote diagnostics to determine whether

there is need for intervention with engineering support. For customers, this means that their Inca printers can be monitored on a daily basis for any signs of future problems. Their support team can offer suggestions to help them maintain their machines in good running condition, based upon their patterns of use. If a printer needs onsite repair, data collected by Inca Vision can assist with a quick diagnosis and repair as well as parts requirements. Inca Vision is now in service in the UK and other regions directly supported by the Inca support team.

PIXEL TRADE AWARDS

PIXEL TRADE AWARDS 2013 See the stars of the night as we celebrated the best of the best in the imaging trade. Were you there? Spot yourself among our winners! The organiser, Life Media Group Events Director Simon Skinner said: “It was great to see so many people at the Pixel Trade Awards. It was a better turn out than we have had for a few years, and everyone really entered into the spirit. The host, Christian O’Connel was a great sport and plenty of money was raised for Action Medical Research, this year’s charity beneficiary. I think being back in the centre of London was a good move for us... it was just the right size and provided a lovely atmosphere. The location meant a lot of people could stay in the hotel itself or nearby, so they didn’t need to curtail their nights early for worrying about getting home. In fact, a few of us even met up for breakfast, and the celebratory spirit carried on. “My sincere thanks to everyone who came and everyone who voted. I am really proud that we’re able to celebrate the trade’s achievements in this manner, and looking forward to next year already!”

sPeCiaL rePort FoCUs

tHe BiG interVieW It was a successful evening at the Pixel Trade Awards, with Tetenal and the stores they serve under the Kodak Express banner picking up several awards. Pixel speaks to Mike Fawcett about the modern success of a traditional company. So, Mike, thanks for talking to us! We hear you’re extremely busy with your new role - tell us a bit about that. Yes I am, but it’s an exciting challenge and one that I’m relishing. My new role is that of Tetenal Germany’s Sales Director for Photo Imaging. For those readers who are unaware, Tetenal is one of the world’s oldest photographic businesses, dating back to 1847 with the HQ based just outside Hamburg. Germany is very successful in certain areas and less so in others so the main idea is to try and emulate the successes we’ve had in the UK over in Germany. We have been successful in adding non-traditional photo businesses to our portfolio of customers and we need to emulate this in Germany. It also gives me a chance to learn from the areas where Germany is very successful and bring some of those ideas over to the UK, such as the traditional chemistry and silver halide. This exchange of ideas will ultimately benefit both countries and the Tetenal group as a whole. How’s business at Tetenal at the moment, and what are the hero areas? Our business here in the UK is going very well and we have seen some impressive growth in key areas. We’ve made a couple of internal changes, most notably the promotion of Phil Barker who will be taking on a Sales & Business Development managerial role. This has already reaped rewards as we’ve been successful in our aim to gain more business in the Pro market and this will also be a continuing focus for us as we head into 2014. We are also very strong in the wide format market and we’ll be looking to add to this growth in the Pro Display market. Our Kodak Pro Day event in London this December will help us to raise our profile in this area. We’ve

added in a new Photo Gifting range this year which has done phenomenally well and we’re encouraged by the opportunities this will offer us going forward. One key part of our business was the addition of the Epson Surelab to sit alongside our Kodak Apex dry lab. We’re very happy with how this has gone this year and our Equipment Sales Manager Chris Castle has done a tremendous job in installing the Surelab in a number of Pro sites without it having a detrimental affect on our Kodak Apex sales, which also remain strong. Imaging’s a very varied landscape at the moment... how does that affect you? Well, as we all know, there are more images being captured than ever before, in fact I remember reading recently that more images had been captured since 2010 than in the previous 50 years in total which is a staggering statement of where the imaging market is right now. Consumers look to spend their money in different ways now and image printing has suffered somewhat but we believe the market is still there and it is the responsibility of people like ourselves and our retail customers to present consumers with new ways of displaying their images and making them part of their everyday lives rather than being stored away in phones. Changes at Kodak has made the headlines many times over the last year with changes to the business. How has this affected Tetenal and your customers? I think it’s safe to say that it has been an interesting period for Kodak over the past 18 months and our competitors were quick to try and take advantage with some creative storytelling! We believe that together, Kodak and ourselves managed the situation as positively as we could and we maintained a dialogue with our customers throughout the whole period so they were aware of what was going on and got their news direct from the horses mouth, as it were. The combined resolve of Tetenal and Kodak never waivered and we supported

each other. It’s great that the new Kodak Alaris has emerged as a strong and financially stable company capable of taking the brand forward over the coming years and we will be right there beside them. How are Tetenal’s Kodak customers doing? I think one of the most encouraging aspects of the past 18 months has been that because of the way we handled the situation we never stopped recruiting new members into the Kodak Express network. That is a great testament to both the strength of the brand and the work we did to keep customers in the loop. Of course some stores have struggled but those which are willing to adapt to the changing requirements of the consumer are doing very well. One store that encompasses both of these factors is Imagex. Previously a Jessops store, the two managers of the business knew that it had potential despite the fact that Jessops had gone out of business. Rather than accept their fate, they took their 21 year history of offering photographic services in the town forward and chose to do so under the Kodak Express banner. They are doing fantastically well and their success is well deserved. Other stores in the network are also thriving through the vision and business acumen they have shown such as Phoenix Photographic, Kodak Express in Lincoln and The Camera Centre up in The Shetlands. What are your plans for Kodak Express in the coming year? We will continue to recruit and build the business with a renewed energy with the emergence of Kodak Alaris. Tetenal have recruited a new Kodak Express Business Manager in Abbie Nichols who has quickly demonstrated her passion and desire to be successful and this will benefit both Tetenal and the Kodak Express network as a whole. We approach 2014 with the same positivity we always have and with hard work I’m convinced we will achieve our goals.
