News Samsung Interview We take a focused look at Samsung’s lens collection and the potential of interchangeable lens models on page 8.
The Big Interview Daring to be different has its rewards, and camera ranges that set themselves apart are currently reaping the benefits. Fujifilm’s David Bland talks about the X series of premium CSCs and its impact on the market and Fuji’s camera business.
Sales Down Online, Up on the High Street The heatwave has prompted a sales skew away from online, back to the high street. Whilst high street sales figures have lifted, online sales have dropped. “Hot weather may not be good for online shopping,” agrees Chloe Rigby, Internet Retailing News. “[In] July’s heatwave, shoppers turned off their screens and headed to the high street. This month’s sales reports show a month-on-month fall in internet sales for the first time since the index began.”
New Wilkinsons Cameras Now Open! Wilkinsons Cameras MD David Parkinson spoke to Pixel about the opening of their new Liverpool store. “Our new store opened for business one day before expected - if the first few days are anything to go by we have all made a sound investment and I’m sure many orders will follow.”

A COMET COMEBACK
Familiar name returns to the high street with a new face Clive Coombes, who tried unsuccessfully to buy Comet from administrators Deloitte last November, plans to open 80 stores in the two years in an attempt to reclaim the chain’s business. Coombes plans to open his first Meridian Comet store - and yes, he has taken legal advice on using that name and branding - in the south west region within the next two months. Coombes’ business plan is said to involve small stores with a leisure focus and minimal stock,
with orders fulfilled centrally. Retail Week reported that the average Meridian Comet shop would be around 3,000 sq ft compared with Comet’s average of 12,000 sq ft. The rejuvenated highstreet offering will focus on areas where customers can try out technology, and Coombes has even suggested that free soft drinks will be served to customers! Whilst Meridian Comet’s range will be displayed online, the retailer insists there are no immediate plans to extend the business to etailing.
Welcome Back, Kodak! Kodak set to emerge from Chapter 11 on September 3rd 2013 The U.S. Bankruptcy Court has confirmed Kodak’s Plan of Reorganisation, which describes the company’s strategy to emerge from Chapter 11 restructuring as a technology leader serving commercial imaging markets. “This milestone marks the final step in the Court process,” explained Antonio Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Next, we move on to emergence as a technology leader serving growing commercial imaging markets such as commercial printing, packaging, functional printing and professional services – with a leaner structure
and a stronger balance sheet. Wwith the Court’s decision today, our emergence is now imminent.” Kodak’s digital camera business is now owned by JK Imaging, and Kodak UK continues to trade as usual. Kodak’s Plan of Reorganisation, with all remaining aspects, including the settlement with the Kodak Pension Plan, should become effective upon emergence tomorrow (September 3rd).
GE to Cease Trading Cameras Support offered to dealers as General Imaging closes Pixel is saddened to report that General Imaging Europe Ltd are to cease trading with immediate effect and that GE branded cameras will no longer be supplied directly into the European market. Closing the business will mean that no further stock movements will made and any outstanding orders will not be fulfilled.
Existing accounts will be handled as normal. GIEL is no longer in a position to accept returns. However, consumers buying GE branded cameras and Ipico projectors from an authorised retail outlet will benefit from a full one year warranty service via service provider, JPSS.

THE INSIDER
Saying what you’re thinking and asking the difficult questions. Each week the Insider reports from the front line of our industry Accessorise… As sad as it is to say, the end of the summer is upon us. Unfortunately, the evenings are getting shorter and kids are headed back to school (Whoop!). Expect then, to be swamped by clusters of mums, all drawing in to print off the reams of pictures, taken over the hols, to show the relatives and to proudly place on the mantle. Can we still ‘expect’ this to happen? We all know that the types of technology that can be found in most pockets & handbags these days, suggests otherwise. Now it is important for us to fight for this business. To many, printing artifacts is a novelty and it’s my claim that this is how it should be presented.
Examples and simplistic visuals of workflow should entice many a passer-by to be inspired enough to make their image(s) real enough to touch and share (in the traditional sense). Backed up by the very real and thought provoking proposition of, ‘PRINT IT OR LOSE IT’. So come on, if you haven’t already, show your customers and equally importantly, new customers what you can do! Join me to discuss online at www.pixel. co.uk and also on the Pixel Magazine LinkedIn group.

The Reflexion On the Collection Wild Side
Case Logic’s new collection of bags and cases for photography enthusiasts
Hunting with the Rollei Wild Cat stabiliser for calm camera operation
There are three products in the Reflexion collection; two messenger-style cross-bags, available in small or medium, and a full backpack. All bags in the collection feature a rugged, anti-slip bottom to stabilize them in cars and on ledges, whilst also offering protection from dirt and wet surfaces. Both of the cross-bags feature a removal camera pod to store a DSLR camera, additional lenses, flash and accessories. Removing the pods will convert them into regular messenger bags, with space for books, headphones and other daily essentials.
The Rollei’s practical Wild Cat” is a stabilization and gliding system that permits steady filming even if the camera and person holding it are moving. This results in a tremendous improvement in picture stability compared to freehand filming. The camera is guided using a non-slip carbon fibre handle that rotates smoothly in all directions. As a result, the DSLR remains horizontal, whatever the movement. The handle can be extended with matching accessories. The rubber foam makes it softer and more flexible – it also provides noise insulation and thermal insulation. The main section of the Wild Cat is made of rugged carbon. The three-group counterweight for the base has an anti-skid device, thus improving stability and balance. It can also be used as a tripod base.
Canon Connect the Dots New Canon cameras and printers offer users seamless experience from photo opportunity to photo album Canon has launched a whole new selection of digital compact cameras and consumer printers designed to provide a seamless photography experience, from the moment a photo is captured, through to sharing, either by printing or uploading to a social network. These new releases aim to fulfil each step of a consumer’s imaging needs, in line with with Canon’s mission of ‘Power to Your Next Step’ mission. The latest launches from Canon include four new digital cameras: the expertlevel PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 with superfast speed and responsiveness, the compact PowerShot SX510 HS and PowerShot SX170 IS featuring superzoom capabilities. All models capture high quality images that can then be transferred, via Wi-Fi or manually, to any of the six new home inkjet printers also being launched at the same time. The PowerShot G16 and PowerShot S120 perfectly demonstrate Canon’s unparalleled expertise in image processing and lens
design. The PowerShot G16 offers a super-bright f/1.82.8 5x optical zoom lens, while the PowerShot S120 is the slimmest camera in the world with an f/1.8 lens. Both cameras incorporate Canon’s most advanced image processor, the DIGIC 6, allowing the capture of photos and Full HD 60p movies in superb detail. Both devices also include: a combination of new DIGIC 6 image processing and a new 12.1 Megapixel 1/1.7 type high-sensitivity CMOS sensor, enhanced speed and integrated Wi-Fi. The PowerShot SX510 HS boasts both a 30x optical zoom lens and 24mm ultra-wide angle, while the PowerShot SX170 IS has a 16x optical zoom with 28 wide-angle – enabling both close-ups, as well as sweeping landscapes shots. Boots, Jessops to Offer CEWE’s Photo Legacy Cewe’s new Photo Legacy service digitises analogue media including slides, prints, negatives and cine film, enabling consumers to view and share their photos on current devices. VHS, SVHS, Cine Film and all other types of moving image formats are digitised first before being copied onto DVD, Blu-ray or USB; this enables the best possible play back quality. Cewe will be providing this service to consumers via Boots and Jessops stores, for whom they already provide photobook and photo gift fulfilment.
Fuji to Focus on Pro Strength Despite strong sales of high-end models, Fujifilm has posted a £6 million operating loss which can be attributed to the encroaching of smartphones onto the compact camera market. Sales of Fujifilm’s X series remained strong, so we expect to see a shift towards high-end consumer and professional models and an expanding range of lenses for the interchangeable systems, which are predicted to continue to grow. Despite the challenge to compacts, Fujifilm reported a 9.7% overall increase year-on-year in consolidated revenue and an overall profit of 14.9 billion yen.
Triggerbeam Now at Flaghead The TriggerBeam Pro can be use by stills or video image makers, to facilitate the capture of images that would normally be very difficult or impossible to achieve in wildlife, sports, event photography or security applications. The IR Beam range is at least 20 meters in daylight and up to 30 meters in darkness. The TriggerBeam Pro Kit is now available at £118.80.

The open day will be held at Epson’s head quarters in Hemel Hempstead on Thursday 5th September and will be an all day event with the opportunity for any retailers to come along. “We’re hoping to attract retailers and pro photographers along to preview just how much a business can benefit from Epson’s dry lab and wide format photographic equipment. With the SureLab they now offer the full package for any photographic retailer to enhance their printing business,” said Phil Barker, Inkjet Product Manager at Tetenal.
Wide Format: The Way Forward
Wide format graphics are an integral part of the marketing mix and represents a major opportunity for print service providers The InfoTrends’ Wide Format Printing: A Critical Element in the Communications Mix study has found that wide format graphics are a major component of communications spending, representing a sixth of survey respondents’ overall marketing budget. Buyer respondents also expect to increase their wide format spending: the share of buyers expecting to increase wide format graphics purchasing in the next 12 months was 6.5 times higher than the share expecting to decrease it. Providers also reported growth; respondents reporting volume increases outnumbered those reporting declines by 5 to 1.

CSC THE LIGHT
Samsung’s award winning NX range of compact system cameras was introduced in 2010, and in the three years since, they’ve built an enviable reputation for quality and ease of use. But how is the lens range developing? We caught up with Jon Penney, Senior Product Manager, Digital Imaging at Samsung Electronics UKto find out How important to Samsung is your lens business? It’s at the heart of the NX System. As with all interchangeable lens systems, the value for the user is being able to change their lens and unlock their creativity to get exactly the shot they want. Whether that’s a fast prime lens for portraiture or a telephoto lens for wildlife or sports, there’s an NX model that’s perfectly matched to their needs. Our R&D teams have a wealth of experience in imaging products and by embracing cutting edge technologies and unique developments like our iFunction lenses, we can develop classleading optics that let photographers of all abilities capture their vision. For me, the real advantage of the NX System, is the compact size of the bodies and lenses. We all know that the best camera at any given moment is the one that you have with you, and for photographers who’ve been accustomed to lugging large, bulky bodies and lenses around with them, the NX system is a breath of fresh air. Customers don’t need to choose between their favourite lenses, they can take them all for a day’s shooting, without having to worry about carrying a heavy bag around. Is the range growing? Indeed, we launched the NX Series in 2010 and have continued to expand it even since. Earlier this year we introduced our 45mm 2D/3D lens, the world’s first one-lens 3D system for a consumer camera. Essentially it’s a 45mm
prime lens, but when paired with a compatible camera, it can be used to capture both still images and 1080p Full-HD video in 3D. We know that 3D TV’s are finding their way into more and more living rooms, and whilst there’s more and more content becoming available, the lens gives consumers the option to create their own 3D content. Harnessing the power of Samsung’s innovative DRIMe IV processor, found in the NX2000, NX300 and Galaxy NX cameras, it can bring an extra dimension to stills and movie footage, and couldn’t be simpler to use. The conversion switch on the body can be used to change from 2D to 3D recording in an instant, and the fast f/1.8 aperture gives wonderful bokeh in portraits. We’ve also announced our thirteenth lens earlier this year. The 10mm f/3.5 is one of the smallest AF fisheye lenses on the market at around half the size and weight of its competitors, offering photographers a convenient way of expanding their creative
horizons without having to carry weighty accessories. Its expanded field of view makes it the perfect companion for landscape photographers – allowing them to compose images of sprawling cities, picturesque scenery and beautiful skies that stretch further than the eye can see. The lens’ ultra-wide fisheye perspective also allows them to create unique portrait images, producing interesting effects and striking portraiture, so they can have more fun with their photography. It weighs just 72g and will be available in Q4 of this year.

SAMSUNG
“One of the most innovative features of the Samsung NX System is the iFn Lens. This is a great new way of controlling the camera from the lens and provides the photographer with a quick and easy way to operate the camera”
Are there any unique features of the Samsung lenses? Yes. The lenses are built to a very high standard and selected models utilise extra-low dispersion or ED glass elements which help to minimise chromatic aberrations. Some of the zoom range have built-in Optical Image Stabilisation too, which helps to combat camera shake and help ensure great results in low light. One of the most innovative features of the Samsung NX System is the iFn Lens. This is a great new way of controlling the camera from the lens and provides the photographer with a quick and easy way to operate the camera. Simply pressing the iFn button on the lens lets the photographer access the aperture, ISO or shutter speed setting, for example, using the lens’ control ring to make adjustments. It’s really simple and intuitive to use and the user can also customise the functionality of the button too, to ensure it gives them the control they want. Most of our NX lenses include iFn as standard. Quickly pressing the iFn button and turning the lens ring allows the photographer to quickly adjust ISO settings, the iris in aperture priority mode or the shutter speed in shutter priority mode, for example, providing the user with a quick and easy way to take control of their images.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about the Samsung NX lens range? There’s a lot of time and effort gone into their development and the impressive build and construction, together with their optical quality is clear as soon as you pick up the lenses. The majority of models come complete with a lens hood to help minimise flare and ghosting, and a carry pouch is provided to help protect the lens when it’s being carried. In addition, several of the lenses are produced in both black and white colour finishes, so customers can match the lens to their body colour. It’s a really impressive range with the key prime and zoom focal lengths all covered, together with a number of more specialist lenses, such as the 60mm Macro and 85mm portrait lenses. There are thirteen models already in the range and it continues to grow, so the future is really bright for the Samsung NX System. Finally, we’ve just introduce a great new lens offer on the NX2000 and NX300. Customers who buy one of the cameras can claim a free 50-200mm telephoto zoom lens between 22nd August and 31st October 2013. The 50-200mm lens can be used for a range of shooting situations at a discreet distance, ideal for clear portraits and sports or wildlife shots where it is difficult to get close to the subject. Portable and easy to operate, its
compact design means it’s small and light enough to be taken anywhere, whilst two extralow dispersion lenses are included to control aberrations and lens flare. The lens includes optical image stabilisation, is supplied with both a lens hood and storage pouch, and is available in both black and white to compliment NX camera bodies. The innovative iFn button provides users with quick and easy control of shooting parameters, such as iris control in aperture priority mode or shutter speed in shutter priority mode.

Tesco Tablet Could the rumours be true? If they are, we’ll see a Tesco-branded tablet device hit the market in time for the Christmas rush. The Times has reported the upcoming release to be at the quality/budget end of the spectrum, priced around the same mark as the Kindle Fire (about £130) and is widely expected to run on Android rather than a proprietary. Tesco operating system... but until it’s made official, there’s no guaranteeing the supermarket giant won’t come out with one of those too.
Apple trade-ins to Boost Store Sales? Apple is rumoured to be bringing out a trade-in programme with the launch of the new iPhone models. As a part of the trade in, consumers taking in a used iPhone model to an Apple store will be offered a gift card which they can put towards the purchase of a new iPhone. Currently, up to 80 per cent of iPhones are sold via third-party retailers so it is widely assumed that any programme like this would carry the aim of increasing sales through Apple’s own stores.

Dual Screens - Next Big Thing? E-reader screens hold the key to new trend in smartphones.
Patent filings indicate that dual screen smartphones might be storming the market in the near future. Designs showing up so far seem predominantly to show E Ink displays on the reverse of more typical smartphones. E Ink displays, the types of display featured on eReaders like the Kindle, are very thin and work on an extremely low power supply, so a second screen of this variety will allow the

Wacom’s Cintiq Goes Mobile Professional pen-on-screen performance on creative tablets for users longing to work wherever and whenever they want Responding to requests from professional customers, Wacom has extended to a mobile environment with the new line of creative tablets. The Cintiq Companion Hybrid, on the other hand, is a traditional Cintiq when plugged into a Mac or PC, but when used as a mobile device, works as a standalone Android tablet with enough power to do sketching and start creative processes with suitable apps. For the likes of illustrators and designers who want to draw, sketch and paint when mobile, the Cintiq Companion Hybrid functions
as a traditional Cintiq when connected to a Mac or PC. When unplugged, it is perfect for light, spontaneous work using AndroidTM apps. As creative professionals require comfort and ergonomics to offset long working hours, an adjustable and detachable stand is also included with both products, offering four working angles from flat to upright. The Cintiq Companion is priced at £1649,99 (256 GB version) and £1999.99 (512 GB version). The Cintiq Companion Hybrid costs £1199.99 (16 GB) and £1299.99 (32 GB).
A Giant Leap for Short Throw Midwich and LG launch world’s first ultra-short-throw laser solutions
LG have leapfrogged the competition by launching two stunning short-throw solutions – both available now from Midwich. Called the Hecto and with a contrast ratio of 20million:1 it is a 100” ultra-short-throw solution that comes with or without a 100” fixed screen, giving it a stunning picture even in bright daylight. For visual impact, this product represents a real bargain if you factor in that it will trade at a fifth of the price of the nearest 100” large format display equivalent.
Furthermore, LG have now also won the race for the world’s first ultra-short-throw solid state laser projector. The LG SA560 will be 2800 Lumens in brightness and is expected to trade at £1199. The SA560, along with the Hecto, are now available exclusively in the UK from any of the Midwich Group of companies.
News Photo Dealer offers EIZO Trials Calumet’s branches in Manchester and London now host three of the best EIZO monitors so photographers can put them through their paces. Offering unbiased product trials in two of the Calumet stores with the heaviest footfall, EIZO and Calumet are now able to invite photographers to learn about colour management, why a monitor makes a difference and to run their own images through the machines so they can see the difference for themselves. “The Calumet stores are perfect for photographers at any level to actually see for themselves the positive difference that an EIZO CG monitor will make to their pictures,” said Victor Aberdeen, EIZO ColorEdge Sales Manager. “Photographers often are put off by the technical stuff about monitors, but being able to try them out for themselves brings the advantages into focus, showing photographers the detail ordinary monitors are hiding, which really benefits their images!”
One to Watch: Ambient Energy New power solutions to offer huge growth, so element14 are kickstarting the hunt for products
Element14 has awarded two engineers in power technology with honours in the Energy Harvesting Design Challenge. Energy harvesting – the process that captures small amounts of energy that would otherwise be lost as heat, light, sound,
vibration or movement and stores it for small devices – is poised for substantial growth as an industry. Technology research group IDTechEx estimated that the total market for energy harvesting devices, including everything from wrist watches to wireless sensors, will rise to
more than $4 billion in 2021. This type of energy and the resulting harvesting products have promise for the small device market including tablets, phones, cameras and more, so we’re keen to see what comes of element14’s early investment.

tHe BiG interVieW David Bland, Senior Product Manager at Fujifilm speaks exclusively to Pixel on the occasion of the launch of Fujifilm’s mould-breaking X-M1 camera complimenting the camera perfectly. Unlike other ‘kit’ lenses the XC 16-50mm lens consists of 12 all-glass elements in 10 groups including 3 aspherical elements and 1 ED element.
We just had our first look at the new camera, and we’re very impressed. Can you tell our readers a little more about it, for those who haven’t managed to get their hands on one yet? The X-M1 is Fujifilm’s third premium interchangeable-lens camera, following on from the X-Pro1 and the X-E1. As with all the X-series cameras we’ve continued to push the boundaries of image and sensor technology whilst combining outstanding design and extraordinary image quality. The new X-M1 features the same multiaward winning 16.3 megapixel APS-C-Trans CMOS sensor as the X-Pro1 and the X-E1. The X-M1 offers exceptional image quality and our high speed EXR Processor II, which means that it’s also incredibly fast. With a tiltable 3” 920k dot high definition LCD and compact and lightweight body X-M1 is on track to widen the appeal of the X-series CSC range. In addition to these features Fujifilm have also included the very popular Q button for easy access to camera features, such as ISO, film simulation modes etc. Wi-Fi is now available in an X model allowing consumers to transfer high quality images to a mobile device or computer using the dedicated ‘Fujifilm Camera App’. The Fujifilm X-M1 is sold with a Fujinon XC16-50mm lens, a compact and lightweight OIS zoom lens (24mm-76mm equivalent,

There’s no viewfinder on the X-M1, why is that? The X-Pro1 and X-E1 both offer viewfinders, and are priced accordingly. The X-M1 offers customers a choice in our X-series line-up, especially at the mid-entry level where they may not have experience with Viewfinders. Again, it’s about offering choice and a clear point of difference for customers. There is a consistent aesthetic and feel throughout the range. Why have Fujifilm chosen this emphasis? We believe that in addition to the award winning technology, owning a Fujifilm X camera is about the whole package – so not just understanding what a photographer wants from their kit, but also enjoying being seen with the camera and the joy owning something with great aesthetic quality. What consumer base is the range attracting at the moment, and who do you hope new models will be popular with? The range so far has targeted enthusiast photographers and professional alike. It’s also made a great impression in the fashion and tech industries. The X-M1 offers a more introductory level X camera, more affordable, slightly more ‘consumer’ focused – with features such as tiltable LCD and Wi-Fi, whilst remaining true to the values of owning a X-series Fujifilm camera. What has the X range achieved so far? The X- range has meant that we have aligned ourselves with professional photographers, engaging with them in such a way that

the X-Pro1 and X100S are used in their professional commercial work. The range continues to go from strength to strength reinforcing the continued commitment that Fujifilm are a photographic camera manufacturer that understands what photographers want and deliver again and again. How does the series reflect the way imaging has changed and is changing? CSC continues to grow in popularity, delivering DSLR quality images but in a lighter weight body offering a more flexible approach to photo taking. Style is an important aspect when choosing cameras, but ultimately the cameras need to offer uncompromising image quality and that’s where our major success has been achieved. What are Fuji doing to support bricks and mortar retailers who stock the X range? Dedicated photo retailers are even more important than before, there’s a lot of technology to communicate and educate consumers about now. With this in mind Fujifilm have dedicated in-store trainers, clear and concise marketing materials and in-store POS to help promote the X-M1 and range of X- series cameras, as well as market leading promotions such as our recent X-Pro1 offer. What’s planned for the near future? There’s lots of exciting announcements coming in the near future – none of which we can comment on yet, unfortunately! Needless to say the Fujifilm camera range is looking very strong.
