Sales Down Online, Up on the High Street The heatwave has prompted a sales skew away from online, back to the high street. Whilst high street sales figures have lifted, online sales have dropped. “Hot weather may not be good for online shopping,” agrees Chloe Rigby, Internet Retailing News. “[In] July’s heatwave, shoppers turned off their screens and headed to the high street. This month’s sales reports show a month-on-month fall in internet sales for the first time since the index began.”

A COMET COMEBACK
Familiar name returns to the high street with a new face Clive Coombes, who tried unsuccessfully to buy Comet from administrators Deloitte last November, plans to open 80 stores in the two years in an attempt to reclaim the chain’s business. Coombes plans to open his first Meridian Comet store - and yes, he has taken legal advice on using that name and branding - in the south west region within the next two months. Coombes’ business plan is said to involve small stores with a leisure focus and minimal stock,
with orders fulfilled centrally. Retail Week reported that the average Meridian Comet shop would be around 3,000 sq ft compared with Comet’s average of 12,000 sq ft. The rejuvenated highstreet offering will focus on areas where customers can try out technology, and Coombes has even suggested that free soft drinks will be served to customers! Whilst Meridian Comet’s range will be displayed online, the retailer insists there are no immediate plans to extend the business to etailing.
Welcome Back, Kodak! Kodak set to emerge from Chapter 11 on September 3rd 2013 The U.S. Bankruptcy Court has confirmed Kodak’s Plan of Reorganisation, which describes the company’s strategy to emerge from Chapter 11 restructuring as a technology leader serving commercial imaging markets. “This milestone marks the final step in the Court process,” explained Antonio Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Next, we move on to emergence as a technology leader serving growing commercial imaging markets such as commercial printing, packaging, functional printing and professional services – with a leaner structure
and a stronger balance sheet. Wwith the Court’s decision today, our emergence is now imminent.” Kodak’s digital camera business is now owned by JK Imaging, and Kodak UK continues to trade as usual. Kodak’s Plan of Reorganisation, with all remaining aspects, including the settlement with the Kodak Pension Plan, should become effective upon emergence tomorrow (September 3rd).
GE to Cease Trading Cameras Support offered to dealers as General Imaging closes Pixel is saddened to report that General Imaging Europe Ltd are to cease trading with immediate effect and that GE branded cameras will no longer be supplied directly into the European market. Closing the business will mean that no further stock movements will made and any outstanding orders will not be fulfilled.
Existing accounts will be handled as normal. GIEL is no longer in a position to accept returns. However, consumers buying GE branded cameras and Ipico projectors from an authorised retail outlet will benefit from a full one year warranty service via service provider, JPSS.
