Collating to a hugely successful day overall, the Sony team were available and on hand to answer questions and take visitors through their range. Of course, as one of the biggest names in the digital imaging industry, Sony has a history of and continue to manufacture top of the range cameras, lenses and

accessories, and the Sony Trade Show ‘Digital Imaging’ exhibition demonstrated endless examples of this. With products in all areas – from mirrorless cameras and a huge range of lenses to camcorders and pocket-sized digital ones, Sony have excelled in providing the industry with a vast range of products to suit photographers with all intentions. Here are Pixel’s pick of the bunch…

DSC-RX100 V

Back in October 2016 Sony announced the launch of their newest flagship model in the ever-popular Cyber-shot RX100 series of compact cameras; the RX100 V. The RX100 V is equipped with a newly developed 1.0-type stacked Exmor

RS CMOS sensor with a DRAM chip, a ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T 24-70mm F1.8 – 2.8 large aperture lens and an enhanced image processing system with a new front-end LSI chip that maximises processing speed, expands memory buffer and optimises image quality, in particular at high ISO settings. The camera can also shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps – the world’s fastest for a compact camera – at full 20.1MP resolution. A first for Sony’s RX100 series, the RX100 V model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of focal-plane phase detection AF and contrast detection AF, ultimately enabling the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.05 seconds. This high speed focusing ensures that shooters will be able to capture their intended subject with high speed and accuracy, even if it’s moving rapidly in unpredictable directions. Other adaptations made to AF performance on the new RX100 V include the addition of AF-A mode, which allows the camera to automatically switch between continuous and single-shot AF modes. Users can also manually select if they’d like the continuous AF and phase detection AF areas to be displayed live on screen while they are framing a shot. New on the RX100 V, users can also freely select the initial magnification ratio when shooting in a mode with Focus

SONY TRADE SHOW 2017 Magnifier, and can select between “focus point” and “centre of display” for its location. The pocket-friendly camera is packed with a variety of video capabilities that will satisfy even the most demanding video enthusiasts. In 4K mode, the RX100 V utilises full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moiré. These high-quality results are achieved through use of the XAVC S codec, which records video at a high data rate of up to 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting. Not only this, but it is able to record super-slow motion video at up to 40x slower than the standard rate and can do this for about twice as long as the RX100 IV model. This extended time allows users to capture a series of high-speed, fleeting moments of action with incredible detail, resolution and clarity.

This impressive mirrorless model also has the ability to support full live-view continuous shooting on the Trufinder or LCD screen at up to 8 frames per second, ultimately producing a real-time shooting experience that combines all the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the imminence of a through-lens optical viewfinder. In addition to this, the new A6300 also offers S-Log gamma recording for wide dynamic range shooting and supports S-Gamut for a wider colour space. Both options allow for greater creativity for processing video post-production. Also included on the

This model has enhanced Zebra functionality for greater exposure control and picture profile settings are available, as well as Time Code/User Bit and much more. Aesthetically, the A6300 camera features an extremely solid feel in hand thanks to its robust, magnesium alloy design. It can be customised to fit nearly any shooting style or preferences, with 9 customisable buttons that one of 64 different functions can be assigned to. The camera adds an upgraded dust and moisture resistance, a reinforced lens mount structure and a new shutter release button and mode dial with improved operability and grip. The new A6300 camera is Wi-Fi and NFC compatible and fully functional with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile™ application available for Android™ and iOS platforms, as well as Sony’s growing range of PlayMemories Camera Apps™, which add a variety of creative capabilities to the camera. Behind The Counter!

Behind the Counter turns the spotlight on counter staff in photographic shops across the country with a mix of silly and (slightly more) pertinent questions. Here, counter staff at Harrison Cameras, Sheffield have kindly provided the answers you’ve been dying to know. If you own/run/work in a camera shop and you’d like to get involved, please email jess@lifemediagroup.co.uk

If you could have any camera equipment you wanted for free, what would it be? Molly: Hasselblad X1D. Simon: I like small kit, I’d love an Olympus Pen-F & 17mm F1.8. Phill: MACRO!!!!!! Black and white or colour photography? Phill: Although I take more colour pictures, I prefer B&W. Simon: In my opinion a good B&W image has a lot more impact. That said, I probably shoot 90% in colour! What’s your opinion of ‘selfies’? Molly: Please no more! Group ones are ok. Simon: They are ok as long as there is no duckface! Phill: Fun on a night out. What’s your favourite thing to take pictures of? Molly: Animals, moving ones mostly. Simon: Anything really, I especially like shooting sport and wildlife though. Phill: MACRO!!!!!! What got you into photography in

12 www.pixel.co.uk

the first place? Molly: No idea! I just like taking pictures! Phill: I wanted something to fill the endless void of existence... Simon: I started working in a camera shop! Do you rely on customers to gain used items or do you get them from the manufacturer? Simon: All our used kit comes from trade-ins from customers, we offer a free collection service so we get quite a lot by post as well as in-store these days. Have you particularly seen an increase in popularity for action cameras in recent years? Simon: There was a big uptake a couple of years ago but it seems to be dying down quite a bit now. I think the market is getting a bit over-saturated. Phill: Less people are coming instore asking about them. Do you see the Smartphone market as a threat do traditional camera styles? Molly: Only really for compact cameras, but a lot of people are starting to realise that phone pictures aren’t that good anyway.

Phill: Not really, phones are great but are on a lower level to other camera styles What new camera or camera equipment releases have excited you in the past? Simon: The one that sticks in my mind was the Canon EOS 300D. I remember the Canon rep running into the shop at 5PM the day before it was about to be announced to the public, with a sample to show us. At the time it was loads cheaper than anything else on the market and was really the first DSLR that was accessible to ‘normal’ people rather than professionals. Phill: Olympus releasing the OM-D series of cameras, just brought back so many memories of the old OM 35mm cameras I used in the past. How do you make buying and selling equipment easier for enthusiasts? Simon: We offer 12 months warranty and a 14 day money back guarantee on all used equipment, a free collection service for part exchanges, and a range of new equipment to suit all levels of photography. Plus we’re really nice.

INTRO 2020

It’s All About the Lens with Intro 2020 Intro 2020 – distributors of quality imaging products for over 20 leading brands to retail customers, including 360 Fly, Cullmann, Metz, Tamrac and many more – have introduced the launch of three new lenses from two of its partnering brands. In this issue, Pixel takes a closer look at these new imaging essentials…

Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Tamron Co Ltd. has announced the launch of the SP 70200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2, a new telephoto zoom lens product for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras. The features are enhanced from its predecessor with amendments that include a thorough review of the optical, mechanical and electronic designs to increase autofocus speed and precision, reinforce VC (Vibration Compensation) functions and to shorten MOD. This new lens is equipped with a USD ring-type ultrasonic motor, whose outstanding responsiveness and control allows for accurate high-speed focusing. Additionally, thanks to the Full-time Manual Focus override mechanism, photographers shooting with AF can instantaneously make fine focusing adjustments using MF without wasting time by switching the AF-MF mode back and forth. More new features include eBAND Coating, Moisture-Proof and DustResistant Construction, Fluorine Coating and compatibility with tele converters. The lens design features a metal-based barrel for improved handling and ease-ofuse. The result of this dramatic evolution

14 www.pixel.co.uk

is a high-speed telephoto lens that widens the scope of expression for photography in a broad range of genres, such as portraits, landscapes, sports and photojournalism. Based on the current model (A009), the optical design has been amended and improved. Both the resolution and contrast reproduction performance far exceeds the present levels. Bokeh has been enhanced and expanded to deliver outstanding background effects across the entire zoom range. The optical design of the new lens consists of 23 elements in 17 groups. Optimum placement of XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements thoroughly eliminate chromatic aberrations, which tend to become particularly prominent in highspeed telephoto lenses. Similarly to the 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5

Di II VC HLD and ideal for use in outdoor photography, the new 70-200mm telephoto zoom has moisture-resistant construction because special sealants that are dust-resistant and moisture-resistant are used at every joint and seam. The sealant material helps to prevent the intrusion of any dirt, dust or water droplets, compared to conventional Moisture-Resistant Construction. The front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water and oil-repellent. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture and fingerprints. The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is available now. SRP TBC.

Samyang XEEN 20mm T1.9 Samyang Optics has also announced a new XEEN 20mm T1.9 lens for

Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD Tamron Co Ltd. has announced the launch of two lenses, the first being the 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD, a new ultra-wideangle zoom lens for APS-C DSLR cameras. This new wide-angle zoom lens covers an exceptionally large range (35mm equivalent is 16mm to 37mm). This lens is the perfect complement for street photographers shooting landscapes, group photos and casual everyday scenes. Way back in 2008, Tamron launched the SP AF10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] (Model B001), which provided users with a first-time focal length range in its class. Building on that lens’ popularity, the 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD has improved optical performance and new features, embodying Tamron’s most advanced technologies, including the VC (Vibration Compensation) system, MoistureResistant Construction and Fluorine Coating, and the first implementation of Tamron’s new HLD (High/Low Torque Modulated Drive Motor). In addition to this, this new lens has a refreshing new design derived from the design of the new product line-up in the SP series. While enhancing image quality, adding new functions and improving the basic performance, the new space-saving design has ensured an optimum configuration for components such as the VC and AF

professional videocine. This lens brings the range of XEEN cinema lenses to eight and complements the existing lenses: 14mm, 16mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 135mm. The new XEEN 20mm offers outstanding image quality from resolving power for 4K+ production for filming video and cinema. The XEEN series is designed for the ultra-high definition video environment and features outstanding optical performance for 4K and above. The lenses also feature X-Coating Technology and 11 aperture blades that help create beautiful and round bokeh to introduce emotional and natural expression. The 24mm x 36mm negative size

allows XEEN lenses to not only work with full frame cameras, but also Super 35, APS-C, APS-H and APS-P cameras. XEEN lenses are available in five different mounts - PL, EF, F, E, and MFT and two different focus scales - metric and imperial units. All focus and iris gear rings are identically positioned among eight lenses to speed up the lens changes. Inheriting the renowned image quality of Samyang’s wide angle series, the XEEN 20mm T1.9 enhances the XEEN line up and brings the total range to eight lenses. With the expansion of XEEN Lenses and the existing Samyang manual focus lenses, plus the recent autofocus line-up and premium XP lenses, Samyang Optics pursues ‘Total Imaging Solution’ optics brand. The XEEN 20mm T1.9 will be launched later this month with a RRP of £1799.99. For more information on XEEN, please visit www.xeenglobal. com, www.samyanglensglobal.com and www.facebook.com/xeenglobal

unit, therefore successfully reducing overall length compared to the previous model. The lightweight and compact body with outstanding ease of use will prove to be very well balanced when attached to an APS-C DSLR camera. Also, in response to the requests of many customers who have asked the company to equip a wide-angle lens with image stabilization, Tamron have now installed VC (Vibration Compensation) on the new model. Optimising the actuator and the control algorithm has made it possible to incorporate the VC, while maintaining the compact design of the previous 10-24mm lens. The VC especially enhances the photographer’s freedom in handheld shooting at dusk or in a dimly lit room, and under other relatively low light conditions, as the mechanism proves particularly effective in the shooting conditions with slower shutter speeds. Tamron’s new HLD (High/Low Torque Modulated Drive Motor) has been developed for use as the AF drive system for this new lens. With its outstanding driving power and stability, the HLD is capable of smoothly controlling the AF mechanism of this new model is actually equipped with large focusing lens elements. When shooting in AF mode, the Full-time Manual Focus override allows you to instantly make fine focusing adjustments manually, without having to switch between modes. The Tamron 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD lens will be available at the end of this month and pricing is to be confirmed.

An exciting launch at this year’s Photography Show will be Shacolla– an

ingenious board product that not only allows for fantastic single prints, but also allows the consumer to be the master of their own photo displays; being as creative as they like. Look out for the impressive montage Shacolla display at The Photography Show to see what it can do. The team will also be on hand to suggest ways in which the Shacolla can be made up and explain the exact number of prints and sizes required to make it. Due to the steady growth in film sales over the last year, there will also be a display of Fujifilm’s current range of film on offer to visitors to The Photography Show, also with a dedicated Instax area with a special focus on Square Print. In addition, Fujifilm’s software team will be on hand to help retailers with any questions on the Fujifilm Imagine software. So make sure you visit stand D61!

Destination: Fujifilm at The FDIS Conference The FDIS National Conference will take place at the National Conference Centre on Saturday 18th. With the theme of Destination: Fujifilm, attendees will see plans for the re-invigoration of the marketing support we provide for our member retailers. Fujifilm has been working hard over the last year to find innovative ways to improve the experience of FDIS membership. The Retailers Survey is well on its way, with every FDIS store in the UK in line for a visit to ask them how we are doing and what we could do to provide even greater benefits. We also commissioned a consumer survey in January to better understand how our retailers’ customers use photo in their everyday lives. We will have an international interest at the FDIS Conference again this year to make the most of our links with the American-based photo marketing group, International Print & Imaging (IPI). Two of our FDIS members, Frosts Photo Centre and Razzaq Digital are members of this group too. With some fantastic marketing ideas and a recently launched new shop design initiative called The Print Refinery, we are looking forward to welcoming the owner of the very first one in Kentucky. He will explain the thinking behind this project and also how it has helped his business. The keynote speaker this year is Paddy Moogan, co-founder of Aira, a digital marketing agency (www. paddymoogan.com). We believe that this is an area our FDIS retailers would really benefit from being involved in, but at the moment they perhaps don’t have the necessary knowledge. So Paddy will be explaining the in’s and out’s of managing great digital marketing.

Strong Growth in Film Stimulates Initiatives at Ilford Photo Having seen their film sales grow for the third year running, HARMAN technology Ltd is launching an exciting new campaign with a call for your images captured using their products. HARMAN technology Ltd, trading as Ilford Photo, is a pioneering imaging specialist based in Mobberley, Cheshire. The company which has evolved from the original ILFORD company formed by Alfred Harman in 1879 – manufactures the ILFORD PHOTO and KENTMERE PHOTOGRAPHIC ranges of traditional monochrome photographic products to offer the world’s broadest range of black and white film, paper and chemistry. With 2016 global film volume up by more than 5%, the historic brand is keen to build
