R.I.P Lexar Memory Cards Some sad news hit the industry last month – unfortunately, Lexar memory cards are being discontinued. Micron, the parent company of Lexar, has announced that the entire Lexar removable storage retail business is being shuttered. “The decision was made as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to focus on its increasing opportunities in higher value markets and channels,” Micron wrote on its blog. In addition to the widely used memory cards, other
products in the Lexar lineup that are being killed off include USB flash drives, memory card readers, and storage drives. “Huge business from other revenue streams had made Lexar’s consumer-facing business “relatively insignificant.” There may still be a chance that the Lexar brand — and Lexar branded memory cards — are brought back from the dead: Micron says it’s “exploring opportunities to sell all or part of the Lexar business,” and the latest is that there are already prospective buyers interested in making a deal.
The Olympus PEN E-PL8 has just won a coveted Red Dot Design Award with its combination of form and function. The Olympus PEN E-PL8 combines the style of the past with contemporary design. Whether in stylish brown or other classic colours, this digital camera gives individual outfits that

REVIEW
Pixel Review:
BenQ SW320 LCD Monitor
Pixel recently got hands on with one of BenQ’s newest products; the SW320 LCD monitor. Here in our August issue, we feed back on our thoughts
“The SW320 is the latest offering from BenQ; a 4K UHD monitor with 99% Adobe RGB and 100% SRGB colour and support for HDR10 makes this the ideal monitor for the professional photographer” 8 www.pixel.co.uk
F
irst of all, initial setup is as easy as can be with the BenQ SW320 LCD monitor. The SW320 is the latest offering from BenQ; a 4K UHD monitor with 99% Adobe RGB and 100% SRGB colour and support for HDR10 makes this the ideal monitor for the professional photographer. The 7-step quick start guide takes approximately ten minutes to complete; including the optional shading hood and peripherals (headphone/ USB/SD card/Hotkey puck). I chose to connect with the included HDMI cable however, users can choose from HDMI, DP and USB 3.0 input. With a gross weight of 20KG the SW320 is on the
heavy side and the stand’s carrying handle is required to lift the monitor into place. We found the shading hood to be a very useful feature for photo editing where colour accuracy is key - the hood blocks out the “yellow” lights in the room so we were adjusting photos according to what is on the screen without having to adjust for the yellow glare that appears on other monitors without a shading hood. The SW320 is infinitely adjustable with a pivot of 90 degrees and 150mm of height adjustment; along with an adjustable viewing angle this monitor can be positioned for the most comfortable viewing experience.
REVIEW
The option for a VESA wall mount (not included) means it can be mounted on a monitor arm allowing more adjustability if required. Our reviewer has quite a tight work space and usually a monitor this big would be too high up (even with adjustment) but the SW320 works well in any work area, although if we were using this monitor long term I would invest in a wall mount.
The 3840 x 2160 resolution gives plenty of work space and the support of HDR10 lets you bring your photos closer to what you would see with the human eye, allowing photographers with an eye for detail to produce the most realistic images. We found the high resolution to give a much clearer idea of how my photos would look in prints as well, especially when compared to a laptop screen. The 99% Adobe RGB is perfect for photo editing work and delivers accuracy that will satisfy the most demanding of photographers. Use of the hotkey puck gives a seamless switch between display modes and the advanced black-andwhite mode lets users preview their photos in both colour and B&W, a great feature for people who shoot in both. This feature not only saves time, but means users can quickly see how your photos look in both formats without having to constantly change the photo saturation. The ease of which this is done means that the SW320 ideal for creating fine art photography.
The 99% adobe RGB provides vivid, accurate colours and ensures that what is seen on the screen is also what will be seen in a print. These features are amplified by the inclusion of a shade hood, - which can be used in landscape or portrait mode. The fact that the monitor can be turned a full 90 degrees to allow for portrait editing is a very interesting feature and one that will come in handy for a lot of professional photographers. Overall, the SW320 is the flagship model from BenQ, and at ÂŁ1500 it does not disappoint. A high resolution coupled with very good colour accuracy makes this monitor ideal for professional photographers. The inclusion of an SD card slot and choice of input connections, as well as support for HDR10 and three colour modes allows photographers to create high quality, accurate images and is perfect for producing prints in both colour and black-and-white. Overall we highly recommend this monitor, the high level of features; adjustment and colouraccuracy means it will satisfy even the most demanding of photographers.

BATTLE FOR THE MILLENNIALS
Battle for the Millennials
Here in your August issue, Pixel takes a look at manufacturers’ need to produce more high-end cameras as amateurs and smartphones prevail in the photographic industry
W

e spend our days observing the industry. Right now, in August 2017, we are in the midst of a battle for the millennials. As we mentioned in the last issue, there are more and more people taking photos than ever before, but these people aren’t buying DSLRs and they don’t necessarily want to be professional photographers. So who are these people? They are the general public. Why are they taking photos? Because it’s so accessible in 2017. What are they taking these photos on? More often than not, their mobile phones. Long gone are the days of buying a disposable camera for £5, taking those flash photos and popping to your local Boots or Asda store to get them developed. Manufacturers know exactly what’s going on and we believe each and every one knows the importance of the professional photographer market. There are now more professional photographers than ever before, but it’s not a rapidly growing market. It makes perfect sense for them to attempt to take a share of the general public market that take photos casually, mostly on their phones. If you’re a photographer, I’m sure you have seen Canon’s fresh and creative marketing campaign associated with the mirrorless cameras. With hip hop music, bloggers and stylised product shots, it’s clear to see what’s going on. Their weapons of choice are mirrorless
cameras and their target is the millennial generation. We use Canon as an example but of course, they aren’t the only ones. Olympus heavily target bloggers with the mirrorless PEN series. Not only do the cameras look cool but they have started to sell funky camera straps along with nonphotography related accessories, which they brand as ‘fashion’. Personally, the team here at Pixel love this direction for brands, and we have long yearned for trendy looking cameras and accessories and for more people to learn the art of photography with a non-phone camera. The interesting thing about this Adobe Stock ©

battle is the opponent, and that is the mobile phone market. At a recent press event, Pixel’s Luke Woodford was lucky enough to use the Huawei P10 and was blown away by what it could do. Yes some of it is algorithms, but the fact that you can change shutter speed, ISO, and so many other things is more than enough for any casual snapper. Also, of course the casual snapper doesn’t want to carry two devices with them. Life is easier with one. Not to mention the P10’s have Leica cameras in them for an extra selling point. Luke said: “The day after I used the P10, I saw an announcement that ZEISS are partnering with Nokia, which I expect to be equally as good as the Huawei rival.” As we keep preaching, we are in the most incredible, interesting time in the industry. Mirrorless cameras are the new ‘cool’ and they are genuinely amazing. However, with phone companies partnering with the world’s most renowned lens manufacturers to produce the best phones the planet has ever seen, who will win the battle? Are mirrorless cameras amazing enough to make the millennials part with the extra money and walk around with two devices? We will see...
A Photographer’s Camera of Choice
Pixel’s Curator, Luke Woodford explores the most common brand of camera amongst professional photographers at the midpoint of 2017
A
sking any professional photographer what the best digital camera to have is, at this time in the industry, is a near-on impossible question. Of course, this is subjective and as manufacturers incorporate different features into their cameras, the cameras of choice very much depend on the kind of photography a professional specialises in. The best camera for a professional photographer is a million miles from the best camera from a sport or adventure enthusiast. As a professional fashion photographer himself – and a self-proclaimed Nikon user – Luke Woodford was curious to see what professionals were using as their main camera bodies right now. Whether the results vary depending on the features and specifications demonstrated by each camera, or whether they’re amazing value for what they offer, Luke took to social media to find out and here, we share his results…
Canon: 56 Nikon: 21 Sony: 6 Fujifilm: 5 Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic, Leica: 1 These results are not necessarily a fair representation of the UK or globally. 88 people is a really small number and of course, answers are subjective to whom the person asking them has access to or contact with. Either way, these results are still interesting! Luke said of the results: “Canon have double the amount of users and more than all of the other brands combined, which is quite remarkable but also expected. Indications of how well they are doing are obvious when you look at elements like the incredible size of their stand at The Photography Show.
“It’s interesting to see Nikon’s numbers at less than half of Canon’s, when it wasn’t so long ago that the two brands were generally viewed as equals. Sony and Fuji are where I expected them. I thought they might be slightly higher because of the momentum they have right now, but I know their numbers are only going to increase as they bring out more incredible products. “I expected Olympus to be slightly higher, although you have to bear in mind that this research was conducted on a very small scale – I’d like to do this on a much bigger scale. It was nice that I had people on my social media that were using Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic and Leica. I obviously don’t have anyone wealthy enough on my Facebook to have a Hasselblad and their main camera!” The beautiful thing about this industry is that although it’s really small, it’s also always changing. Any of the brands could overtake Canon in a year. We’ll see what happens…

hotography is something that means different things to different people. Some are enthusiasts, who spend a staggering amount of their time (and money) on their hobby, keeping up with the latest imaging technologies, accessories and apparel. Many others have varying experiences with cameras, with analogue/film cameras often sitting, gathering dust whilst newer, compact cameras have been largely replaced
by the mass camera of choice; the smartphone. However, we are all familiar with the vulnerability of our digital data and most, if not all reading this, will have suffered the loss of precious photographs as we authorise the software upgrade of our favourite mobile device. The Matte Photography paper is a new product in the vast catalogue of CEWE Photoworld’s state-of-the-art, luxury
“The Matte Photography paper is a new product in the vast catalogue of CEWE Photoworld’s state-of-theart, luxury photography products and it’s safe to say it doesn’t disappoint” photography products and it’s safe to say it doesn’t disappoint. Users can create a professional grade photobook in minutes using CEWE’s Creator software and receive their book within just a few days. The software CEWE’s Creator software is very simple to use – anyone with basic computer skills can create a CEWE photo book, available as an online editor, computer app, or as we would recommend – a downloadable programme. A plethora of options are available through the software and full customisation of a book can be achieved. We chose to have full-page spreads for our book, however uers can add several photos to a page and resize them to their
in print
requirements. The background colour is also customisable (we found black gave the all-round best look) as well as the choice to add images to the cover of the book. Another thing we love about the CEWE Creator software is that it provides a price for every change made – users can add or remove pages, images, and text without a nasty surprise upon checkout. The cover Despite the option to add images to the front and rear cover, we chose a simple design to achieve a classic look. The gold highlights from CEWE add a truly professional touch to any photobook and the option to have no CEWE branding anywhere on the cover or spine makes this book indistinguishable from a published book any user would buy from a retailer. Again, users can fully customise their cover with their choice of text or images – including adding the text of their choice to the spine. This makes the book ideal for portfolios and will give any photographer a great first impression with clients. The professional feel of this book makes it ideal for gifts or books for clients, allowing professionals to provide a much better product than would be found in a high-street photo printing shop.
The paper The main feature of this review is the new CEWE Photoworld Matte photography paper. This is a truly stunning photographic paper – the images we chose have been displayed in brilliant detail with vibrant colours and contrast. The colour accuracy provided by CEWE is exactly how we viewed the images on the screen, with no deviation from the original edits and the nature of the matte paper means the book can be viewed in any lighting conditions; removing the frustrating glare that comes with gloss photos. The main, real benefit of reproducing beloved images into a CEWE photobook is that they arrive expertly printed onto the
page, with no loose adhesives and no chance of pictures fading or falling out after years of sharing. The ultimate treat though, has to be the fact that users get to view pictures in physical print, instead of from a glaring screen – a much more satisfying experience. Overall, this is a very high-quality product that is ideal for any professional or amateur photographer. The easyto-use software and very agreeable price point, in addition to the endless customisation options and high-quality paper, makes this CEWE photobook an ideal choice to display portfolios and print images for clients. It’s a highly recommended product that surpasses all expectations.

Overflowing with raw energy, Keith Haring’s art taps into the unbridled electricity of the human spirit, drawing from the same passion for life and creativity that informed Polaroid’s original vision. “Our latest collaborative film pays tribute to Haring’s enduring belief that ‘art is for everybody’. Each shot places your photos in one of two frames adorned with Haring’s dynamic and energetic figures”, said Impossible. The film works with all Polaroid 600-type cameras, Impossible I-type cameras and also Polaroid SX-70, cameras when used with a Neutral Density Filter. It has integrated long-lasting battery to power your Polaroid camera and flash

A
n incredibly important figure in New York street culture, Keith Haring achieved international fame in the 1980s with his playful artwork. A passionate artist and social activist until his death in 1990, Haring’s unwavering belief in the power of art to bring people together continues to resonate through every object that bears his mark. Inspired by Haring’s experimentation with instant film, The Impossible Project has created a special edition of its classic Color Film for Polaroid 600-type cameras. Each of the 8 instant photos features a graphic frame adorned with his distinctive artworks – completely new to The Impossible Project’s selection. Enforced by a belief that art should be open for everyone to enjoy, Keith Haring’s creativity and love of life has seen him endure as one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century.
