Swains on the Move Swains International Plc are moving from the seaside town of Hunstanton to the metropolis of Kings Lynn! Having been in the existing Eastland House premises for over 35yrs there is naturally a lot of nostalgia and happy memories being left behind. The location of the new premises which are on an industrial estate on the edge of Kings Lynn is far more convenient for our carriers and of course any trade visitor. The warehouse space is a little more than the 23,000 sq ft in Hunstanton, however the office space, although smaller, is far more open plan and has
been totally refurbished to a modern standard. The new office will also include a spacious new showroom area allowing the showcase of a range of exclusive distribution lines and output equipment. To commemorate this significant move, Swains are introducing a new corporate colour and making design changes to the Swains company logo. It’s compatible with Canon E-TTL and E-TTL II.
The flash has a guide number of 197’ at ISO 100 and 200mm. The head tilts from -7° to 90° and rotates left and right 180°. In the initial findings of the National Photographic Survey 2017, 44% of people said they know someone who has been introduced to the discipline after taking pictures on their phone. A total of 58% said a DSLR camera was then purchased, following the initial interest in photography, which allowed them to extend their interest in the hobby. Almost 5,000 people took part in the nationwide questionnaire, developed by Calumet Photographic. It was created to find out current trends in the photography industry and seek feedback from photographers about the latest equipment, which they are using. The results also showed that only 15% of people continue to use the traditional photo album, where pictures are physically printed off, to display their work. The most popular way to exhibit photos was social media (60%), followed by online galleries (48%) and own photographers’ websites (47%). The survey results also revealed how photographers make money from their work, with freelancing being one of the most popular answers at 29%.
Weddings, photography business and corporate clients were also singled out as other ways people behind the lens make a living. on Warner, Managing Director of Calumet Photographic, said: “Everything we do has our customers’ best interests at heart, which is why we launched this survey. The results have helped us to find out more about their journey, their industry views and approaches to their work. “Photography is both a hobby and profession, which visually records the world around us for the enjoyment of current and future generations. However, as different technologies continue to emerge, we wanted to understand where new trends are heading, so we can continue to provide the latest equipment and knowledge in the industry.”

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III It’s been a while sine Olympus graced our pages, but the recent announcement of an all-new camera from the brand has got us all very excited. Here, Pixel introduces the OM-D E-M10 Mark III...
O
lympus has released the newest model in their award-winning OM-D series; the OM-D E-M10 Mark lll. Beautifully designed and sharing many of the class-leading technologies found in other models of the esteemed OM-D range, the E-M10 Mark lll encourages
6 www.pixel.co.uk
photographers to take the next step and discover the joy of photography. Sure to become a modern classic, Olympus has carefully designed the E-M10 Mark lll to be the perfect travel companion. Light-weight and easy to use, this camera has been created with intuitive controls
to help photographers take stunning, crisp images and smooth videos from the moment they pick up the camera. The E-M10 Mark lll is available in silver or black and goes on sale later this month. This interchangeable lens camera is available as a body only or a lens kit.
COVER FEATURE AMAZING RESULTS IN ANY SHOOTING SITUATION They say that excitement comes from discovering new things and thanks to the combination of the latest TruePic Vlll image processor, also used in the acclaimed flagship OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and Olympus’ class leading 5-axis Image Stabilisation (IS), photographers can enjoy taking beautiful blur-free images. This clever technology gives pin-sharp results in virtually any shooting situation without using a tripod, even night scenes. Making movies to capture the sights and sounds of new places truly brings memories to life, although sometimes the glory of the detail in 4K movies can be lost to shakes and blur. Olympus has taken that worry away from photographers new to movie making, because the E-M10 Mark III’s high-performance image stabilisation is built into the camera body and compensates for camera shake with any lens in any scene, even hand held! THE IDEAL EVERY DAY COMPANION A constant companion, the stylish OM-D E-M10 Mark lll is compact and lightweight enough to take on any journey –
photographers won’t want to leave home without it! With a built-in view finder, flash and Wi-Fi, everything about this camera has been designed with the new photographer in mind and the feel of the compact body is no exception. Comfortable in the hand, the robust construction and enlarged grip means the camera is easy to hold. This camera has a tiltable LCD monitor with touch operations similar to a smartphone, easy-to-use metal dials and buttons, and the icons and text on the camera are highly visible; all of which will help photographers to be creative on the move.

COVER FEATURE The E-M10 Mark lll will be the best dressed OM-D, because it launches with its own premium, genuine leather body jacket. Available in brown or black this will be perfect accessory to compliment the beautifully styled E-M10 Mark lll. IGNITE THE PASSION AND DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS The E-M10 Mark lll is equipped with incredible new upgrades and technology, cleverly brought together to allow photographers to develop as they use their camera more and start to take creative control. Even first time interchangeable lens camera users can shoot with ease due to the four camera assist shooting modes... AUTO mode (previously iAUTO) has been significantly improved for better blurfree images – detecting movement even in the dark. Scene (SCN) mode has been upgraded and will help photographers to take control of the results they want by choosing one of six themes with predefined settings. The Advanced Photo (AP) mode has been added so photographers can fine tune their images and enjoy incredible shooting methods such as Live Composite and Multiple Exposure without having to access the menu structure.
Bleach Bypass is a new option in Art Filter (ART) mode, which expands the range of photographic expressions by reproducing the silver retention method used when developing film. NEVER STOP THE JOURNEY Busy times with friends and family usually means there’s lots going on. But often taking a quick snap is disappointing – the action is blurred and the moment is missed! Photographers will be amazed at the results they can achieve with Olympus’ high-speed Auto Focus (AF) system. By using the E-M10 Mark III’s high-speed Touch AF, they can capture the exact moment with a simple touch on the LCD screen, freezing the action with incredible clarity. The latest OM-D model now features 121 contrast AF points thanks to the improved processing performance of the TruePic Vlll. With 121 AF points covering most of the image area users can focus anywhere on the screen. The Continuous AF has a tracking ability to detect the subject movement, and photographers will find the Face Priority AF and Eye Detection AF really useful to ensure proper
exposure and sharp focus automatically when shooting portraits. EASY SHARING WITH WI-FI Photographers can stay connected while they are out and about, with the E-M10 Mark lll’s built-in Wi-Fi function. It’s so easy to share beautiful images and movie clips with friends, using the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) smartphone App, without the use of a computer. Once connected to the App, photographers can use their smartphone or tablet to remotely control the shutter release, and many more functions such as adding GPS data to their photos.

REVIEW
Pixel Review:
Novo Dura 400 ABS Hard Rolling Case
Continuing along with our monthly reviews, Pixel got hands on with the Novo Dura ABS 400 Hard Rolling Case. Here, we feed back on our findings
T
he Novo Dura 400 is newly-designed hard case and with external dimensions of 556 x 358 x 230mm, it is one of the larger cases offered by Novo. Founded in 2016, the Novo brand is a newcomer to the market and this case boasts features such as a retractable handle, rolling wheels and impact resistance with a very high standard of waterproofing (IP-67) and pre-cut foam diced inserts.
10 www.pixel.co.uk
With an optional soft padded insert and a five year warranty, this case looks very promising. On first impression the case was very lightweight - 5.7kg unladen, which would make it very easy to carry in situations where the retractable handle and wheels are not feasible. However, I found the case is very easy to wheel across fairly rough terrain. I used the case
for several photo shoots that involved walking through fields, dirt paths and a forests, and only needed to pick the case up when walking through thick undergrowth. I even took the case into several condemned buildings without any problems. This is a very sturdy case and is clearly of high-quality construction, which is backed up by a five year warranty.
REVIEW Clearly Novo are very confident in their product and they have reason to be! I have used it extensively over the last two weeks and it is not showing any signs of wear or damage whatsoever, so I am confident that it will last much longer than the warranty period, even with heavy use. The size of this case means it is perfect for many applications - with internal dimensions of 518 x 295 x 188mm, users can fit inside several DSLR cameras plus lenses and accessories. A very interesting feature of this case surrounds the two options for storage. The pre-diced foam insert is ideal if you have one use in mind; it would easily fit a full-frame camera setup, a large video camera or even a drone, however for photographers we would recommend the optional soft padded insert. This transforms the Novo Dura 400 into a more traditional camera bag setup. I like to pick and choose equipment to suit the photos I want to take and the foam insert would be too limiting for when I want to swap my gear around. I chose to carry a crop DSLR and a few lenses but there was easily room for an extra camera setup, a travel sized tripod and a large amount of extras and accessories. The really impressive part of this case is its security... The “Easy Latch” press-pull safety latches provide a locking mechanism so it will not open accidentally or when dropped, and it can easily be taken over rough terrain with no risk to your gear. I dropped the case several times without any damage and the latches stayed secure. Subsequently, my gear was fully protected at all times. The advanced silicone foam rubber seal
makes this case air-tight and waterproof with the IP-67 rating, meaning this case is waterproof up to 5 metres! I’m not sure why you would need to put your camera gear in water but you could throw this case into a lake and retrieve it unharmed. In addition to these already impressive security features the Novo Dura 400 has two stainless steel padlock protectors, which make the case ideal for travelling (especially flying) and gives that extra security required when transporting your gear. It’s also ideal for anti theft. Not only would padlocks make it much harder to open, but the simple fact that it is locked will deter most thieves from taking it. In summary, this is a great piece of equipment and one that I have very

It is almost overengineered in its design and function - I shoot outdoors and travel through all sorts of terrain but it can be used in temperatures ranging from -25 to 90 degrees Celsius, meaning wherever you are in the world and whatever conditions you face, the Novo 400 will not let you down. Although I have only been using it a short time, the Novo 400 has stood up to any abuse I’ve thrown at it. This is not a product that you need to be careful with - you can throw it in the back of your car, take it anywhere and be confident that your gear will stay protected. Scott Reeves

PRODUCT LAUNCH
Nikon:
Introducing the D850 Last month,Pixel had the pleasure of attending the exclusive launch event for the Nikon D850 at Loft Studios in London. Here, we report back on the event and delve deep into the capabilities of the brand’s most recent release
B
ack in August the Pixel team was lucky enough to attend the launch event for Nikon’s brand new D850. Not only were we blown away by Nikon’s latest addition to their camera family, but we were also blown away by the event put on by the brand. As with most launch or showcase events, the day started with an expected presentation, which explained in great detail all the outstanding features of the D850 – always expected from a brand like Nikon who continue to tirelessly bring out more and more top of the range cameras. After the presentation we devoured a lovely lunch and were then split off into

four groups. Nikon had set up four studio situations with four incredible Nikon professional photographers; Tom Miles – Sports/Action, Ross Harvey – Wedding, Richard Peters (Ambassador) – Wildlife and Amy Shore (Ambassador) – Car. Nikon provided great scenarios for visitors to test the camera, all with fantastic variation. We had half an hour with each set to test out the D850 with a range of Nikon lenses. It was clear to see the thought that went into every aspect of the day from the Nikon team – it was quite incredible. We loved the wedding set in particular. It was the ideal situation for which the

After testing out the camera in all situations and sets provided by Nikon throughout the day, we just didn’t want to put it down. You’ll find all technical specifications further down in these pages, but apart from the silent mode, Pixel’s favourite features are that of the option to have different size raw files and the touch screen. Pixel’s Curator and self-proclaimed Nikon user, Luke Woodford said: “The new silent shooting mode on Live View as a fantastic feature of this camera. It’s no secret that Nikons don’t have the quietest shutter but now with with mode you can be as discreet and unobtrusive as you need to me. It’s obviously great for capturing natural moments at weddings and it also means you can get up close and personal with your doing street photography too.” Whether users are shooting commercial sports, nature, weddings, fashion or movies, the D850 gives photographers working in intensely competitive fields the creative flexibility they need to excel. The fast, ultra-high-resolution FX-format sensor uses 45.7 megapixels of effective resolution to deliver 45.4 MP files. range. Frame rates are boosted to up to 9 fps when using the optional MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack. Additionally, moviemakers can now record full-frame movies at 4K with no crop factor, which opens up the possibilities when shooting with Nikon’s fast prime lenses, and 4K timelapse movies can be recorded in-camera. Other new features that enable greater flexibility include the option to shoot RAW size large, medium, or small. Silent Photography mode enables ultra-sharp ultrahigh-resolution shooting with no shutter noise. Pinpoint AF mode is available in Live View for precise macro shooting. And this is the first DSLR ever to boast an in-camera focus-stacking mode for exceptionally sharp images with vast depth of field. Tim Carter, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Nikon UK, says: “The D850 is an exceptional follow-up to the hugely successful D810 and we are thrilled to be
adding it to our line-up of fullframe DSLRs. It’s an ideal choice for photographers who want the freedom to deliver stunning images without exceptions. Whether you’re looking for flexibility in terms of file size, ISO, speed or megapixel count, the D850 excels in all areas, making it the perfect camera for pros.” Of course, with a brand that continues to create such high class cameras and lenses comes huge expectations. Pixel can vouch for Nikon and say that these exectations were absolutely exceeded and we can hardly wait for their next big release! Thank you Nikon for an amazing launch and congratulations on such a fantastic new camera. The Nikon D850 will be available to buy from September 7th 2017 with an RRP of £3,499.99. For any further information on the D850, please visit www.nikon.com

PRODUCT LAUNCH
Enabling New Imaging Possibilities with the RX0 Sony are forever evolving with the demands of the photographic industry and earlier this month, the brand announced the launch of the newest addition to its RX series; the RX0. An ultra-compact, robust and waterproof camera
S
ony recently announced a new type of camera that enables entirely new imaging possibilities; introducing the RX0! This camera marries the hallmark leading image quality of the Sony RX series, with advanced photo and video capabilities, all compressed into a robust and ultra-compact body. Weighing just 110g and measuring at 59mm x 40.5mm x 29.8mm (WxHxD), the RX0 redefines how small and light a premium compact camera can be. It can be used as a standalone camera for capturing photos or videos in any shooting conditions and is equally adept as a part of a multi-camera setup. The RX0 is packed full of advanced Sony technology and features a 1.0type stacked 15.3MPvi Exmor RSCMOS image sensor, BIONZ X® processor and a wide-angle ZEISS® Tessar T* 24mm F4 fixed lens to deliver high resolution results for both RAW and JPEG stills. It has an Anti-Distortion Shutter of up to 1/32000 second and can shoot at up to 16fps, meaning that even fast-moving objects are beautifully and accurately rendered. For those looking to capture the decisive moments of daily life, the compact nature of RX0 means that usage is as unobtrusive as possible, thus maximising the possibility for natural, high quality shooting. Sony’s newest addtion to the RX series is waterproof at depths of up to 10 metres and when used with the new MPK-HSR1Housing, can be used down to a staggering 100 metres in depth. It is shockproof when dropped from up to 2 metres and crushproof to 200kgf / 2000N, making it durable enough to withstand shooting in difficult situations where traditional cameras simply cannot go. The RX0 was conceived as a camera that is just as useful to the videographer as the photographer and this is demonstrated with a host of creative video features. For those who want to incorporate super-slow motion footage,
the RX0 offers the opportunity to shoot at up to 1000 frames per second. For production flexibility, users can use 4K clean HDMI output to record uncompressed video to an external recorder and with both MF Assist and Peaking Functions, the focus can be precisely adjusted to exact specifications. Time Code / User Bit features provide an essential tool for multi-camera shoots in particular, making the editing process a much easier experience, and Preset Focus options add a true element of control to a shoot. To maximise the potential of RX0,
a host of new accessories to support new ways of shooting have also been launched. These include the VCTCGR1Cage, CPT-R1Cable Protector, VFSPR1Spare Lens Protector, VFA-305R1 Filter Adaptor Kit - which includes filter adaptor, lens hood and MC protector,NPBJ1 Rechargeable Battery Pack - and ACC-TRDCJ Accessory Kit. consistent, popular demand from analogue lovers worldwide, hungry to try out the square format. It´s an invitation; a dare to take your life and tint it, frame it, share it, shake it, scream it — yodel like no one’s listening — upside down, loud and clear. It embraces core Lomography values: photography is not a complex, contrived process; but emerges as a living, breathing document and is simultaneously an integral part of a situation. There are no bad or less important photos: photography is a celebration of life and all the little moments that make the world spin. The Lomo’Instant Square has launched

Fujifilm takes to our InPrint pages again this month to share the reasoning behind why a highly rated French celebrity and fashion photographer searches for the services of a small Newark-based independent and their Fujifilm Original Photo Paper options
Michel also claims that the secret to his success comes down to knowing exactly what he wants and working closely with the lab to make it happen. For their end of the deal, David and Steve add that: “We are control freak perfectionists – I am sure that helps!” Cre8 Studios have had both feet firmly on Fujifilm ground for more than four years, which is almost as long as the brand has been working with photographer, Michel. “I worked in a large pro lab before coming to Newark 22 years ago,” says the business’ David Gates. “And sometimes size and volume means some work doesn’t get the attention it really should. Quality control can become an issue as you get bigger. My partner Steve Watson and I will never allow any product out of our studio unless we are 100% happy with it. “Michel Haddi called us five years ago asking about our service. He brought us a small batch of images that were going into a book he was producing. He loved the results we produced and he has been a regular customer ever since. He also has a lab he uses in Paris, but he prefers to use us whenever he can.”

A case in point, Cre8 recently printed, packaged and dispatched more than sixty large format exhibition images (output to Fujifilm Pro Gloss paper) to Florence, where Michel was having an exhibition. David continued: “To be honest the packaging, which took us hours, was more of a challenge than the printing. One wrong move and we would have had to reprint. We were working on very tight deadlines.” Working with world-class professionals

A Kodak G4XL II Picture Kiosk is the perfect solution for offering Instant Prints. It’s a brand that consumers trust.

New features include streamlined connectivity to APPLE and ANDROID OS-enabled smartphones and touch devices, and new software that is equally intelligent and inspiring. It’s a perfect fit for making powerful connections with your customers
How many times do you see people walk past empty tills at a supermarket because they prefer to use the self service tills? Privacy and Instant Print Many customers also don’t particularly want staff looking at their personal prints. They want to get in and out as quickly as possible.
