Hasselblad has announced the release of updated firmware for the X1D-50c. The 1.17.2 firmware adds two important improvements to keep the ground-breaking camera ahead of the curve. Hasselblad’s passion for development and evolution enables it to constantly progress and perfect the cameras for Hasselblad users. The new firmware includes the ability to resize autofocus points and an electronic shutter function. X1D users can now select three focal point options: 35, 63, or 117. This updated feature allows for an even more accurate and precise selection of the photographers’ subject

focus point. By simply holding down the AF/MF button and pressing the display button, users can cycle through the size options and easily reset to centre. The electronic shutter allows for shutter speeds up to 1/10,000s and is silent with zero vibration. The new features will enable users to take highquality images in situations that may have previously been challenging such as when silence is needed during a live performance or when working in low light conditions. By the end of 2017, the XH lens adapter will gradually start to support auto focus when using H-lenses with the X1D-50c.

COVER FEATURE

KODAK PIXPRO:

Assisting the Rise in VR & 360 Photography It’s been a while since Kodak graced our pages, but taking our cover spot here in our October issue and with a focus on VR and 360 cameras, we delve deep into the capabilities of one of the brand’s most innovative cameras to date; the Kodak PIXPRO 4KVR360 Action Cam

T

he world of virtual reality, or VR as it’s widely being described as nowadays, has primarily been the domain of the gaming community, with earlier, crude VR applications promising to take the gamer to the centre of the battlefield, race car or wherever the topic of the game may lead them. More recently though, we have been witnessing a silent VR revolution. For those of us that first saw modern VR on social media platforms, it was a strange and beautiful experience, to be able to look around someone’s picture or better still, their video. Footage from the cockpits of fighter jets, extreme sports aficionados and rock bands have since been taking the unsuspecting public into the world of virtual reality and without them even really being aware of it. Such has been the expansion of this technology, that corporations like the BBC now have dedicated divisions to explore the possibilities and the implications of delivering VR content to a consumer TV audience. With their requirement to deliver programming content that is entertaining, informative and/or educational to all, they currently house a crack team of filmmakers, testing and trialing projects,

6 www.pixel.co.uk

ranging from interactive sitcoms, to immersive screenplays. On that subject, VR has been steadily making its mark with film audiences across a host of film festivals with Sundance, Cannes and the London Film Festival all hosting dedicated VR categories. However, it’s not only film & TV content that’s making waves and leading the medium to a broader audience. Many are predicting that it is poised for expansion into our work, social lives and education. Today, mobile VR offers the most accessible glimpse into that future with Google (and the many, even less expensive me-too products) having recently launching ‘Cardboard’, an entrylevel viewer, made from… well, cardboard. Many brands are turning to immersive video — mainly 360-degree video and VR — for innovative and attention-grabbing advertising and marketing campaigns. Brands across numerous industries have seen significant success via their use of 360-degree video and VR. For example, Hong Kong Airlines’ 360-degree ad was 35 times more effective than the same traditional 2D ad. Google, Facebook and YouTube continue to dominate the digital ad

“The decision to continue expanding our award winning 360° VR camera line up with the new KODAK PIXPRO 4KVR360 was a natural progression. We are committed to the interactive 360° video format and want to give yet another option to consumers when it comes to choosing a quality 360° VR camera based on their specific needs.” Mariame Cisse, Marketing Director for JK Imaging Ltd., Europe.

COVER FEATURE

space as creators are using the medium of 360-degree video and VR across industries. In June 2016, Google representative, Aaron Luber said: “On YouTube, we made a big, early bet on 360-degree video. This means viewers can see the video from every angle just by swiping or moving the phone or tablet around — no headset required. Uploads of 360-degree videos continue to grow and have doubled over the past three months.” The term ‘experience’ gets banded around a lot when discussing VR and there are an increasing number of examples of work that demonstrate this. Possibly none better than ‘Notes on Blindness’. It’s not quite a video, it’s not quite recreation, and it’s not conventionally academic. It is, however, well worth a look and suggests the kind of work that may be more commonplace in the not-toodistant future. Along with an abundance of educational content that is benefitting from being adapted to VR, offering a greater and immediate perception of size, spatial relationships and orientation, you may have heard about the emergence of some other VR films and documentaries.

Tracking them down, though, can be tricky. One such resource that puts a stack of well-curated pieces in one place, is ‘Within’. Within has partnered with many big names in news and entertainment, such as Vice Media, the New York Times and NBC to name just a handful, which keep the platform populated. There is already a fairly impressive collection, considering that it’s still quite a new platform. Within content would certainly improve with higher resolution and better technology, but it does seem to have an especially exuberant feel in these early stages. Maybe that’s because many of VR’s early adopters, motivated by its storytelling potential, are indulging in creativity for creativity’s sake. On that point, and reflecting on the general consumer appetite, we also seem to be experiencing a gear-change in sales of these devices. This could well be a ‘knock on’ effect that‘s been born from the adoption of many an action camera over the years. Consumers have seen what’s possible with 360 and VR cameras, with the facilities such as YouTube accommodating the content so readily, and with such simple and powerful

software available, this kind of filmmaking is definitely not an exclusive club. It seems that many photo dealers have been quicker to pick up these cameras for reselling, and quite right too. Many were slow to pick up on the explosion of action cameras when the sector was making huge strides, essentially letting outdoor stores take all of the business and to own that part of, what is ultimately, image-making gear. With the evolution of these cameras and with brands like Kodak making such great equipment, surely it’s time for our industry to take control of the sales! Now though, we turn our focus to that of Kodak - the brand boasts a number of products to satisfy users at all levels - and more specifically, their 4KVR360 action camera.... Kodak PIXPRO 4KVR360 Action Cam The 4KVR360 adopts a minimalist approach to an all-in-one 360° VR camera, with two 4K fixed focus lenses housed on either side of the futuristic camera body. Each lens is designed to work both individually or in tandem, to capture full 360° 4K Video* and easily upload 360°

LATEST ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Latest Announcements from It’s been another hectic month for FUJIFILM and here in your October issue of Pixel magazine, we outline some of the brand’s most important announcements from over the last few months

F

UJIFILM have had one hell of a busy year, and as we approach the Christmas period, they’re showing no signs of slowing down whatsoever. It’s innovative brands such as the likes of FUJIFILM who have kept the - often dull - industry going for quite some time, bringing out new, oustanding products and keeping budding photographers amateur and professional - excited about new equipment and capabilities. Last month, Pixel had the pleasure

10 www.pixel.co.uk

of attending one of the brand’s press events following a series of recent announcements, all of which we’re going to break down for you here in these pages... FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR FUJIFILM announced last month that it will release the FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR Lens, the sixth lens in the GF Lens Series, in November. This product is a professional quality interchangeable

lens for FUJIFILM’s medium format GFX 50S digital camera. The FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR Lens is a highly versatile wide angle lens with a focal length equivalent to 36mm (on a 35mm format) and maximum F2.8 aperture. Thanks to its compact and lightweight design (weighing only 490g), this lens is ideal for street and documentary photography. Like the other GF Lenses, the GF45mmF2.8 R WR is equipped with

LATEST REVIEW ANNOUNCEMENTS resolving power to support further enhancement in future. Thanks to the Nano GI coating, this lens offers clear depiction performance with reduced ghosting and flare. Weather and dust resistant, the lens can be used in temperatures as low as -10°C. FUJIFILM has also recently unveiled the latest development roadmap for the GF Lenses. With this roadmap, details of a Telephoto Prime Lens and a Tele Converter are unveiled. The addition of the two new lenses brings the GF Lens line-up to a total of eight lenses, supporting a wide range of user needs. FUJIFILM X-E3 Stylish, compact and portable, the X-E3 packs a powerful punch, with the inclusion of FUJIFILM’s iconic 24.3MP X-Trans™ CMOS III APS-C sensor and the X-Processor Pro high-speed image processing engine. The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth® low energy wireless communication. Users can pair the camera with their smartphone or tablet device for easy transfer of pictures taken using minimal power – perfect for sharing images with friends and online. The LCD monitor, on the back of the camera, uses a static touchscreen panel which supports the conventional “Touch Shot”, “Touch AF” and “Focus Area Selection” capabilities. An all-new “Touch Function” feature will be available on the X-E3, which enables gesture controls reminiscent of smartphones, like flick and pinch zoom, to further enhance touchscreen operation. In addition, the AF algorithm has been updated to enhance the camera’s performance for tracking a moving subject. The X-E3’s premium exterior design, agility and functional beauty make it a mirrorless camera that’s a pleasure to own and fun to shoot with at the same time. Small, stylish yet deceptively powerful, it’s ideal for capturing images and sharing stories. XF80mm MACRO LENS FUJIFILM also announced that it will release the new FUJINON XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens next month. The introduction of this lens will add to the X Series line-up of interchangeable lenses which are renowned for their outstanding image quality. This lens features a focal length equivalent to 122mm (on a 35mm format), a maximum aperture of F2.8, and 1.0x magnification factor, a first in the X Series interchangeable lens range. By achieving high resolving power at the focus point and beautiful bokeh, this

lens is optimal for shooting flowers and nature photos. Combine this lens with FUJIFILM’s unique Film Simulation such as Velvia, for truly stunning close up images. The FUJINON XF80mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens is a mid-telephoto macro lens that delivers the very best results from Fujifilm’s unique X-TRANS CMOS sensor. With an optical construction of 16 elements in 12 groups, including one aspherical lens, one Super ED lens, and three ED lenses, along with a Floating Focus System*, this lens is capable of achieving high-quality macro shooting from close-up too far away. This lens supports hand-held shooting thanks to Optical Image Stabiliser system suppressing shift shake and also provides a fast and silent Auto Focus system by adopting linear motors. NEW FIRMWARE UPDATES FOR X-SERIES MODELS The brand also plans to release free firmware updates for the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, FUJIFILM X-T2, FUJIFILM X100F and FUJIFILM X-T20 X Series mirrorless digital cameras. These updates will be released in November and December 2017 and are a result of requests from users for improving usability and adding new functions. Installing these firmware updates will add new support for the FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO software which allows the user to connect the camera to a computer via USB cable for developing raw files

in camera (X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F). The new firmware will also improve third party studio flash controller usability (X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F) and will dramatically improve the AF-C tracking algorithm in zone and tracking AF mode (X-Pro2, X-T2). It will add 4K video support, a computer tethering function (X-Pro2) and enhance the touch panel operation when using the EVF (X-T20). FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO Finally, FUJIFILM has announced that it is developing a new RAW conversion system, the FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO. FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO enables users to quickly and easily convert RAW files with outstanding image quality, once a camera is connected to a Mac or PC via USB cable. Exceptional image quality is retained, as the X RAW STUDIO system utilises the X Processor Pro in the camera instead of the CPU in the computer. Due to the increasing size of RAW files, users have found batch conversion to be an issue, as it takes more and more time as a result. However, using the high performance “X Processor Pro” processor, this batch conversion is handled far more efficiently as a result. This new software is due to be available from late November 2017. LAUNCH EVENT

Launch Event: Olympus

OM-D M-10 Mark III Earlier this month, Olympus took us aboard the William B for a trip along the Thames to properly welcome the OM-D E-M10 Mark III. Here, we reveal all from the event

U

pon arrival - and a very welcoming one at that - we walked on board the magnificent William B and were greeted with a glass of Processco and a phenomenal Jazz Band. Of course, as expected, the first point of call for the Olympus team was to give all guests a talk and demonstration on their new beauty. Olympus has carefully designed the E-M10 Mark lll to be the perfect travel companion. Lightweight and easy to use, this camera has been created with intuitive controls to help photographers take stunning, crisp images and smooth videos from the moment they pick up the camera. The E-M10 Mark lll is equipped with incredible new upgrades and technology, cleverly brought together to allow photographers to develop as they use their camera more and start to take creative control. Photographers can stay connected while they are out and about, with the E-M10 Mark lll’s built-in Wi-Fi function. It’s so easy to share beautiful images and movie clips with friends, using the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) smartphone App, without the use of a computer. Once connected to the App, photographers can use their smartphone or tablet to remotely control the shutter

12 www.pixel.co.uk

release, and many more functions such as adding GPS data to their photos. A constant companion, the stylish OM-D E-M10 Mark lll is compact and lightweight enough to take on any journey – photographers won’t want to leave home without it! Of course, the next step was for us to get our hands on one and we couldn’t wait. We instantly knew where this would fit in todays market. It’s a perfect crossover camera for people that love taking photos but want to evolve from just using their phone. It weighs practicallly nothing, looks cool and is perfect from the pro street photographer attempting to be more subtle. Pixel’s Curator and professional photographer, Luke Woodford said: “I’d put a 17mm prime on it and use this in the streets all day long. It’s so much more convenient than using a big DSLR and the quality for the price is phenomenal. Also, it’s so light that after half an hour of it being round my neck, I forgot it was there.” After having an initial play aound to familiarise ourselves with the functions, we took one to the top deck to shoot what we saw along the river. Luke used the camera for about an hour and just couldn’t get over how light it was. It completely opened up his mind

to smaller cameras for certain things. To put it plainly, it’s perfect for the travelling photographer. Nobody enjoys carrying gear when they’re walking the streets of Marrakech or hiking in freezing Iceland. The ability to shoot 4k is also, of course, a great feature. We would use this as a second camera shooting a wedding. Perfect for capturing those extra angles of ceremony and speeches to partner with your DSLR. If you insist on shooting handheld, the camera offers a combination of mechanical and digital stabilisation in 4K mode (most cameras can only digitally stabilise 1080), giving unusually smooth footage, even whilst on the move! The predecessor was good but the E-M10 III is visually and fucntionally better. As usual, Olympus do a fantastic job with design and really warrant the purchase. The E-M10 III is perfect for the casual person looking to get into photography, but also the pro looking for a lighter and more convenient alternative for relevant genres. A huge thanks goes to Olympus for having us and for manufacturing such a wonderful camera. Stay tuned to Pixel for all the latest Olympus news! www.olympus.co.uk

14 www.pixel.co.uk

not only showcase gear but it will deliver a day of inspiration and education. A full programme of events and talks will be running throughout the day, including interactive seminars, live model shoots, Q+A sessions and guided photo walks, all delivered by expert photographers and brand specialists. It’s not all about the ‘new’. There will be a dedicated trade-in area where they will offer an on the spot valuation for your used equipment, which you can then put towards some new camera equipment on the CameraWorld stand. Their expert knowledge has helped hundreds of photographers buy the right gear at the right price. CameraWorld LIVE will also have a dedicated second-hand camera kit area so, if you’re after some vintage glass or you’d like to expand your collection of film cameras, or pick up a bargain DSLR/ Mirrorless camera or additional lens, then the show will have something for you. Pixel’s Curator, Luke Woodford caught up with CameraWorld’s Director, Tony Stent, who here explains his expectations...

“There is simply a real need for a Southern Show. The Photography Show is great but it’s in Birmingham! We wanted to do something for the folks down here. Having CameraWorld LIVE also compliments Digital Splash which is of course, up north. People know how successful we are at these shows and we know how to make a show work.” Tony Stent, Director at CameraWorld

BIG INTERVIEW

Pixel: To start off, could you give a brief description of the history of CameraWorld LIVE? Tony Stent: Four years ago, we had our first show titled ‘Masters of Photography.’ Canon were the only camera brand to attend and it was a small show. Then three years ago we up-sized slightly, with Fujifilm also attending. We had more accessory brands present as well. Last year we opened up even more and everyone wanted to come on board! Pixel: Where did the inspiration for such an event come from and how did the initial idea come about? TS: There is simply a real need for a Southern Show. The Photography Show is great but it’s in Birmingham! We wanted to do something for the folks down here. Having CameraWorld LIVE also compliments Digital Splash which is of course, up north. We have a fantastic reputation with exhibitions. We do great at Focus and The Photography Show etc. People know how successful we are at these shows and we know how to make a show work. Because there is a real need and we know how to fulfill it, it’s just snowballed. Last year there were queues around the block. It was a large venue but it was so full, it got to the point where it was stuffy and rammed all day. Pixel: Thanks for that insight, we’re getting excited! How many people are you expecting there this year? TS: We absolutely expect between 20003000 people. We had 1500 last year and this year it’s twice as big. More photo walks, more exhibitors, more seminars, more of everything in general. We have

actually made the seminars more about actual photography than the gear itself, which I’m sure our visitors will love. Pixel: That’s a great number and we know it’s going to happen. Money is tighter in the industry than it used to be. How are manufacturers responding to it? Are they able to promote the event sufficiently? TS: Because last year proved to be so successful and they were able to physically see it, it became almost an international thing; they wanted to be seen at the show and they also agree with the need for a London show. The response has been excellent across the board with quite an excitement building amongst brands, ambassadors and the general public. Pixel: Are you pushing for it to grow even more?

TS: Yes, I think it will naturally evolve following its success. We expect the demand to grow and we will, of course, cater for that. Pixel: Where can everyone find out the details about the show like the brands that are exhibiting, seminars etc.? TS: We have a dedicated website with everything on that is updated daily. Pixel: What are you excited about most for the show this year? TS: To see our baby grow, as it will do this year, will make us a very proud. The enthusiasm we are getting back from the suppliers has been very gratifying and we are confident we will realise expectations. Pixel: Thank you for chatting to us Tony. See you at CamraWorld LIVE!

The Return of the Original with Polaroid Continued...

ince The Impossible Project acquired the major shareholding of the Polaroid brand earlier this year, we’ve been itching to find out what’s next; how will the brands emerge, how will they look and what new products can we expect. Now we know! Polaroid created instant photography as we know it today with the launch of the breakthrough Polaroid SX-70 camera back in 1972, followed by landmark innovations such as the original OneStep, colour instant film and the Polaroid 600 and Spectra cameras and film formats. Artists who used and were inspired by these cameras include that of Andy Warhol, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe and Keith Haring. In the 1990s and 2000s, the swift rise of digial technology eclipsed instant photography and Polaroid announced the

end of instant film production in 2008. A dedicated group of instant photography fans, The Impossible Project, stepped in to buy the last remaining Polaroid factory and since then, they have been the only people in the world making film for vintage Polaroid cameras. The acquisition of the brand by The Impossible Project’s largest shareholder in Spring 2017 created the opportunity for Polaroid to return to analogue instant photography and for The Impossible Project to delcare mission accomplished. September 14th marked the launch of Polaroid Originals - a new brand dedicated to analogue instant photography. The launch coincides with the 80th anniversary of Polaroid, founded by Edwin Land in 1937. Polaroid Originals is rooted in the iconic

is famous for. It is available for modern analogue instant cameras like the OneStep 2, as well as for key vintage Polaroid camera formats. Dedicated to keeping the legacy alive, Polaroid Originals also sells fully refurbished vintage Polaroid cameras. Oskar Smolokowski summarised the motivation behind the Polaroid Originals brand: “When it comes to capturing a moment and bringing people together, there’s nothing quite like a Polaroid photograph.” The Polaroid OneStep 2 analogue instant camera is now available for pre-order from polaroidoriginals.com, and from a range of national retailers from the end of this month for £109.99. Polaroid Originals new generation film is also now available and features the distinct, dreamy aesthetic of analogue instant photography. New I-type film for the OneStep 2 is priced at £14.99 with eight pictures per pack. Film for vintage formats - the Polaroid SX-70, 600 and Spectra - is prices from £17.99. Of course, we look forward to hopefully getting our hands on Polaroid’s newest product - the OneStep 2 - and sharing the results with you all in our InPrint pages in the near future. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled!

cultural status of the brand that inspired countless artists and became part of popular culture for decades. “The past years have seen a strong revival of analogue instant photography,” explained Oskar Smolokowski, CEo of Polaroid Originals. He continued: “This growing demand goes beyond nostalgia. In today’s fast-paced, digital word a tangible object outside of your phone screen becomes a valued artefact. It’s also completely unique and impossible to reproduce.” Polaroid Originals is launching a new analogue instant camera, named the Polaroid OneStep 2. It is a proud successor to the original Polaroid OneStep, the camera that democratised instant photography 40 years ago with its ease of use. Priced at £109.99 and with the same point-and-shoot usability as its predecessor, the OneStep 2 invites photographers - professional and amateur - to join the revival of analogue instant photography. With a powerful built-in flash, easy USB charging, longlasting battery and self-timer, the camera is designed for today. Polaroid Originals simultaneously introduces a new generation of original format instant film, with colour, black and white, and a range of special editions to choose from. The new film features the distinct dreamy aesthetic that Polaroid

FUJIFILM SPONSORS 20x16 PRINT COMPETITION T

This year The Societies’ Rhyl-based HQ expects anything up to 1500 20x16 prints to drop on its mat. Entries to the now world-renowned Annual Print Competition are at an all-time high and now Fujifilm, having recently launched its innovative ‘Fujifilm Original Photo Paper’ campaign, has just signed up as a major sponsor. But why is this competition so successful?

The overall he organisation’s Terrie Jones winner this year explains: “Our Annual 20x16 Print picks up more than Competition was born over a prestige. This competition really sets the standard now and every single picture is treated with ‘white glove’ care from the moment it drops on our mat in Wales, explained Terrie.” She concluded: “This is a print competition so we are really seeking true print quality. It’s such a shame to see images that could have done so much better if only they had been printed on the most appropriate paper. It’s very frustrating for judges to see a beautifully composed image that has all the elements in perfect harmony but fails on print quality. Now we are delighted to have Fujifilm on board as a key sponsor. Fujifilm produce world-class papers that photographers know they can always trust.” Open to members and non-members.
