NEWS Sony Announces Three New Palm Camcorders
Sony has announced three new 4K HDR¹camcorders: the XDCAM® PXW-Z90, the NXCAM ®HXR-NX80 and the Handycam® FDR-AX700. Featuring Sony’s ground-breaking Fast Hybrid AF system, all three palm camcorders combine a fast and reliable autofocus function, adapted for shooting with a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor, delivering stunning image clarity alongside a range of versatile shooting features. The new camcorders all support an instant HDR (High Dynamic Range) workflow, enabling users to produce breathtaking HDR content with minimum post-production to suit a range of content creation scenarios and applications. The Fast Hybrid AF system ensures highly accurate focusing and tracking
during shooting, delivered by 273 phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 84% of the shooting area, high-density placement of autofocus points and a newly developed AF algorithm. This reduces the burden of focusing, especially when accurate focusing is required for shooting 4K films. In movie recording mode, the appearance of phase-detection AF frames indicates the focused area and easily allows users to monitor a subject that is in focus. The XDCAM® PXW-Z90, NXCAM® HXR-NX80 will be available in December and Handycam® FDR-AX700 is available now. For any further information please visit www.pro.sony.eu

ROTOLIGHT: The Future of the LED We’ve got something a little different in store for you this month, as for the first time ever, Rotolight’s Managing Director, Rod Aaron Gammons sheds some light on the company’s most successful products, and explains his expectations for the future of LED lighting in the industry
F
Margot Robbie, shot by Mark Mann with the Anova PRO
or the small minority who don’t know, Rotolight is a pioneering British technology company, specialising in creating award winning LED lighting products for photographers and filmmakers. Rotolight has developed countless industry first features and has been widely recognised with numerous global awards and accolades for its innovation, technical excellence and product quality. Luke Woodford recently caught up with Rod Aaron Gammons, Rotolight’s Managing Director, to find out how Rotolight started: “Rotolight started as an idea in the back on my Dad’s house. This was around the time that Canon released the 5D Mark II, which was the first camera in the world where it had high definition video as well as stills. That opened up a completely new market. No longer did people have to buy two devices, they could buy one that does both and was great at both. At that time there was no light on the market that could do stills as well as videos. “The other thing was, there was only one hot shoe, so if you want to record audio, if you were doing an interview you would need to put a mic on the shoe so where do you put the light? Our first light remains to this day, the only light that will mount over a shotgun mic so you can have both a light and a mic, and that’s how Rotolight started. It started with us literally hand assembling these products on the kitchen table. FedEx would come at 3pm, they would go out the door and that’s where it grew from.” Since the introduction of LED lighting to the photography, broadcast and filmmaking market, the technology has advanced in leaps and bounds. As with any new trend there were a few teething problems that slowed adoption, particularly around performance and quality. Now, however, the LED is an integral part of capturing the perfect shot, setting the scene and bringing life to photographs and film.

COVER FEATURE The Rotolight AEOS is the ultimate LED location light
From a practical and commercial point of view, the LED is more cost-effective and more energy efficient than other types of light, while producing a significant amount of less heat. As a result, the lights create a more comfortable environment for those in front of the camera. From a creative perspective, LEDs can make the workflow more efficient by bringing additional functionality to shoots and also a significant time saving factor. Looking at the use of continuous lighting, for example, it removes the trial and error approach to photography, enabling users to shoot what they see. INNOVATION AND THE BOOST TO CREATIVITY Not all LEDs are created equal. With the advances in production techniques and materials, as well as the significant investment into research and development that manufacturing companies make, these LEDs are now viewed as a lot more than merely lights. One of the companies that focuses heavily on innovation is Rotolight. The award-winning LED manufacturer is at the forefront of the industry, with a range of on-camera, location and studio lights
designed and developed with the user in mind. The company developed the round LED light, which produces its signature catch light effect in the subject’s eye, and is well-known for powerful, yet soft light output and wrapping quality of light. The range also includes five patented features, unique to Rotolight, including... True Aperture Dimming™: This feature takes the guess work out of calculating the right exposure. It automatically calculates and displays the correct F-stop for the subject in front of the camera at a given distance. In this way, it eliminates the need for a light meter and improves the accuracy and quality of shots. High Speed Sync (HSS): Provides a powerful HSS flash with zero recycle time of up to five times the maximum continuous light output for traditional photographic workflows. This feature means that users can
have one piece of equipment for both flash and continuous light, making it more cost-effective. AccuColour™: LED phosphor technology ensures the light’s exceptional colour rendering (CRI:96+). It features dual controls for fast, tuneable colour aided by an accurate colour temperature display. This feature saves users time in post production as there is no need to correct colour and skin tones after a shoot, as you can get the colour temperature right the first time. Designer Fade™: This is a production tool that allows users to programme a customisable fade up or fade down to start or finish an interview, eliminating time and effort needed in post production. CINESFX™: The powerful suite of customisable lighting effects helps users simulate various types of

light to add drama to productions. This includes strobe, fire, sirens, TV and gunshots. The main benefit is that having this functionality built into the light eliminates the need for a costly flicker box. While the latter two are more apt for videography and filmmaking, the set of features demonstrates the breadth of design and clear focus on innovation that Rotolight brings to the market. THE ROTOLIGHT RANGE Established in 2008, Rotolight has developed a number of products over the past decade, all including its patented and innovative features. The company’s flagship light — the ANOVA PRO — is an advanced studio and location light, ideal for photographers, videographers and cinematographers alike. Featuring all the Rotolight patented tools, the ANOVA PRO uses HSS to bridge the gap between strobe and continuous light, synchronising the light to the camera shutter release for traditional photographic workflows. The light has garnered much praise in the industry — as well as a number of awards, including the Lighting Engineering award at Cinec 2016, TVBEurope’s Best of Show award at
8 www.pixel.co.uk
IBC2016, and the Acquisition Production award at IBC2016. Mark Mann, a long-time user of the Anova, is well-known for his editorial work featured in publications such as Esquire, Men’s Health, Billboard, and a portfolio including shoots with Al Pacino, Keira Knightley, Eddie Redmayne, Barack Obama, Benedict Cumberbatch and Rihanna. He explained why he enjoys working with the Anova: “Despite having tested a few continuous lighting panels in the past, I never liked the feel of them. But once I tried the Anova, I found I could get something different. It’s subtle, but there’s something about the ‘slowness’ of the light mixed with the quality of the Leica, my camera of choice. The light is absolutely beautiful and gives you a filmic feel. “There’s also something about the ‘wrap’ of the light. I still can’t quite put my finger on why the Anova is so good. The light is so versatile that it gives the shoot a very different feel, you can move light to wherever you want to get the desired effect and see what you’re actually shooting. It works out really well. The recently launched AEOS,
also has a proponent in Mann. “The AEOS provides the best of both worlds for photographers, as a strobe and continuous light. Often when you’re using strobe you’re not seeing what you’re going to get when you look through the viewfinder. So you’re anticipating what the shot’s going to look like. The fact that the AEOS can be used as both means I can actually look through my screen and know that is the colour and that’s how the light is going to fall, which allows me to get to where I need to be quicker.” The AEOS is an ultra-thin, highly portable location light, designed specifically for photographers and videographers on the move. It features integrated aluminium handles, an industry first, which gives users the freedom to ‘work the light’ at angles and positions not otherwise possible. Instead of a traditional yoke, the AEOS includes a professional level ball head as standard,
Rotolight Anova PRO
COVER FEATURE providing complete 360 degree rotation, and 200 degrees of tilt when mounted to a light stand. This makes it incredibly versatile and enables users to achieve lighting setups not otherwise possible with traditional light sources. THE MULTI AWARD WINNING NEO The company’s best-selling light is the NEO on-camera LED that incorporates patented technology combining flash and continuous lighting in one, easy to use product. The light can be mounted both on or off camera for ultimate creative control. The latest release in the range, the NEO 2, combines the ‘shoot what you see’ benefits of continuous light with the flexibility of HSS for more power when needed or to freeze action. It has been designed for photographers and videographers on the move, and is lightweight and portable. The benefits are immense — there is no recycle time on the flash, its HSS capability enables users to flash at up to 500% of the maximum continuous light output, it can be used for both photography and videography, and it allows photographers to perfectly preview
and frame their shots and adjust to the exact colour temperature they need. HSS also enables users to shoot with wider apertures to create beautiful separation between subject and backgrounds. In essence, the NEO 2 is a 21st century light for 21st century cameras. The NEO 2’s continuous ‘modelling light’ and HSS flash enables the photographer to easily acquire focus in dimly lit situations and optimise composition. Rotolight has also collaborated with Elinchrom to integrate its ‘Skyport’ 2.4Ghz HSS wireless flash receiver into NEO 2. This eliminates the need for photographers to purchase both a transmitter and flash receiver. It also ensures they get the reliability and flexibility needed to control multiple off camera lighting setups. Skyport enables users to wirelessly control up to 10 lights, in four groups at up to 200m(656ft) with the new Rotolight HSS transmitter, optimised for Rotolight by Elinchrom. It is available on launch for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, and, shortly, Fuji camera systems, and compatible with all other Elinchrom Skyport devices. As with the company’s other lights, the NEO 2 is well regarded by professionals in the industry. Jason Lanier, a Sony Artisan of Imagery and professional photographer
said: “The NEO 2 is going to revolutionise how people use light, and eliminate the need for external flash. If you have those moments that you just cannot afford to miss, this is an incredible light for you. You’ll never miss a shot. I tested NEO 2 on a Sony A6500 at 11 frames per second. It fired every single time. There’s genuinely no recycle time, no light loss, no power loss. That is just a game-changer, there is no other light in the world that can do that.” Just like the rest of the Rotolight range, the NEO 2 includes the company’s trademark innovative features, such as CineSFX effects, Designer Fade and AccuColour LED technology. But one of the most beneficial features for photographers is electronically adjustable colour temperature in both flash and continuous modes, and a built-in kelvin display. This enables photographers to easily adjust white balance or match ambient light settings to create more natural looking shots. While one of the overriding benefits of LEDs is the energy efficiency, the NEO 2 takes this to a new level. It delivers the longest battery life of any speedlight or flash, ever made, able to flash 85,000 times on full power — on a single set of rechargeable AA batteries. This is compared to the 200 flashes of a typical speedlight. THE FUTURE OF LED The LED market will continue to evolve. The LED is no longer just a light, albeit one that delivers cost-effective performance and energy efficiency. Instead, the LED brings additional value to shoots in terms of boosting creativity, streamlining workflows and allowing users; photographers, videographers and filmmakers, to focus on what they do best. As a result, these innovative products will remain in demand, as will manufacturers like Rotolight that drive this innovation forward. For further information, please visit www.rotolight.com

PRESS EVENT
A Day with Canon:
Introducing the PowerShot G1 X Mark III Last month saw one of the industry’s biggest brands, Canon, launch the newest addition to its PowerShot G range, the G1 X Mark III. Here, and following on from the official launch event in London, Pixel feeds back on the success of the day and delves into the functions and abilities of such camera
W
hen Canon invites you to a product briefing in a secret location (a magical and haunted place in Kennington, London) that gives you that WOW factor as you enter it, you know you’re up for something great. As expected, a brief video presentation kicked off the event, introducing their new innovative compact camera, the G1X Mark III. Of course, a full camera description will follow in these pages, but just some of the features to stand out from the initial presentation included the brand’s first ever
APS-C sensor, a 24-72 mm f/2.8-5.6 lens (35mm equivalent), a Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 24.3 mega-pixels, 3x optical zoom, a sharp OLED viewfinder and vari-angle touchscreen. The G1 X Mark III is Canon’s second compact camera to have weather protection – so moisture and dust do not get in the way of your creative inspiration. Of course, the event was so much more than just a presentation, and it was clear that the team put a huge amount of thought into making the day. Those waiting to try the beta samples G1 X Mark
“Our first thought when holding the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III was that it would be a great tool for vloggers, with the vari-angle touchscreen allowing users to watch the screen on ‘selfie’ mode.” www.pixel.co.uk 11
PRESS EVENT III, were offered a haunted tour, featuring in-house actors in the basement – a great touch to what would’ve been just your regular press event. The day also featured a photo contest, and guests were asked to take one image within the magical location with the G1X Mark III and print it (on a Canon printer, of course.) Our first thought when holding the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III was the realisation that it would be a great tool for vloggers, with the vari-angle touchscreen allowing users to watch the screen on ‘selfie’ mode. With many, many more incredible elements to this camera – the fact that it’s small, robust and lives up to its specifications being just a few of these – the only negative we could think of surrounds that of the 1080p video resolution. With 4K, this camera would be unrivalled! We were amazed at the end result produced by this compact powerhouse camera. The quality in low light conditions and vari-angle touchscreen definitely did it for me. As expected, Canon has delivered yet another amazing camera, and although we were only able to play around with their beta samples, users could feel the attention to details in the making of the G1 X Mark III. Following on from this incredible day put on by the Canon team, we can hardly wait to get our hands on the brand’s newest invention! The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is set to be released later this month with an SRP of £1,149. For any further information on this camera, visit www.canon.co.uk
A BIT ABOUT THE CANON POWERSHOT G1 X MARK III Perfect for today’s enthusiast photographer seeking DSLR quality in a compact form, this camera’s small size makes it ideal for subtly capturing boundless moments whilst on the move. Leveraging an exceptional sensor, similar to the one seen in the EOS 80D, and with capabilities to shoot in an ISO range of 100 to 25,600, it can flexibly capture quality images in a range of conditions. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III boasts EOS handling in the compact body of a PowerShot model. This camera not only feels good to use, but its features enable a familiar DSLR level of instinctiveness and control, alongside the ability to customise it for individual use. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III comprises a central, built-in Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), which has been optimised to deliver a high-resolution view via a 2.36 million-dot Organic EL display. Whether an action shot or a family portrait, with Touch and Drag Auto Focus (AF) users can take control of the shot by intuitively setting an AF point, providing the ultimate confidence to comfortably capture a sharp image. Compact and lightweight, at just 399 grams, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III is 14.8 mm thinner and approximately 16
per cent smaller than the G1X Mark II, which is superb for saving space in your luggage whilst travelling, or as a tiny addition to your kit bag. Those familiar with Canon’s EOS cameras will love the PowerShot G1 X Mark III’s operation and control features. From the Lens Control Ring through to the shutter release, Canon users will feel comfortable and at ease using this camera. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III supports the hassle-free capture of Full HD 60p movies in MP4 with smooth, stable filming underpinned by 5-axis Advanced Dynamic IS and Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Dynamic IS corrects and steadies video footage when shooting on the move, whilst Dual Pixel CMOS AF enables the creation of cinematic ‘focus pulls’. While featuring the familiar timelapse movie function, for the first time in a Canon compact camera the PowerShot G1 X Mark III also includes a panoramic mode. With the simple push of a button, and horizontal or vertical movement of the camera, you can effortlessly capture amazing, high-quality panoramic images with the greatest detail. You can enjoy extended shooting time, thanks to the PowerShot G1 X Mark III’s Eco Mode, which enables the battery to last up to 25% longer.

Vitec Group Acquires JOBY & Lowepro
Last month saw news that the popular photography gear brands, JOBY and Lowpro have been acquired by Vitec Group, the parent company behind other popular industry brands such as Manfrotto. Here, we inform you of everything we know so far
V
itec, one of our industry’s leading global providers of premium branded products and solutions to the fast changing and growing “image capture and sharing” market, is a focus in this month’s issue following it’s latest news… As we well know, Vitec Group purchased the Manfrotto brand back in 1989 and since then, has built up a portfolio of 22 well-known brands used by photographers around the world, including that of Gitzo, Avenger and Lastolite; all of whom have graced Pixel’s pages at one point or another over the years. It’s last conquest though, is the acquisition of JOBY and Lowepro. “The acquisition will enable Vitec to become the leading global provider of accessories within the newer and fastgrowing iPhonography and vlogging markets, as well as strengthen their position within the photographic bags market,” Vitec says. Of course, as your go-to trade publication, we wanted to delve deeper into the reasoning behind the acquisition, and so we went directly Chris Carr, Senior VP at Joby...
brands retain their individual identity and maintain the DNA that has made them and continues to make them so successful. We are fortunate, as part of the acquisition to have taken on some excellent individuals, not least in R&D and product functions, which will be so important for maintaining continuity. There is already a very exciting product roadmap in place, which will only be added to as we move forward. As with existing Vitec brands, we will invest in multi-platform marketing and best in class merchandising support for both in-store and online channels.
What was it about these two brands that made you want to acquire them?
As touched on previously, the JOBY range provides innovative support solutions popular with modern content creators. With products not just for traditional cameras but also mobile phones and other devices, the brand perfectly complements our Manfrotto and Gitzo offering. With these three brands, we feel we have a product for everybody, across all channels and a
JOBY has established itself as a brand of choice with the modern day content creator & has a comprehensive range of support solutions for mobile journalists, bloggers/vloggers, sports enthusiasts and professionals alike. It sits perfectly alongside our existing Manfrotto & Gitzo ranges. Lowepro have a rich heritage of designing & manufacturing uncompromising carrying solutions for the most demanding of photographers, working in extreme environments & in all weather conditions. Can you tell us about any plans you have for them going forward? It is extremely important that both

Are there any more brands in your sights for future aquisitions? We will always be interested in adding the ‘right brands’, which will complement our product portfolio, focussing on the premium section of the accessory market and brands, which are acknowledged as leaders in their field. Watch this space! How do you feel JOBY and Lowepro will fit in with your current brands that sell similar products?
multitude of price points. Lowepro’s reputation for developing carrying solutions, which provide ultimate protection and security in the ‘outdoor environment’, is second to none. Manfrotto bags, whilst technical and of course providing great protection, mostly features carrying solutions for use in an urban environment, with a lean towards a modern lifestyle and cool design, this is also consistent for the brand new Gitzo Century range. So, whilst there will always be some crossover, there is no doubt that the introduction of Lowepro complements rather than competes with Manfrotto and Gitzo range offerings. We feel we will be providing a truly comprehensive bag offering, which covers all hardware types and user demographic. For further information, please visit www.vitecgroup.com

CAMERAWORLD LIVE!
A Sell-Out Success
On Saturday 28th October, Pixel had the pleasure of attending the first ever CameraWorld LIVE! event, and what a day it was! Here in these pages, we feed back on the success of the day and speak to some of the visitors for their thoughts

CAMERAWORLD LIVE!
W
ow, what a day. As much as we love The Photography Show, it’s just so nice to have something down this end of the country where extreme planning and hotels aren’t a necessity. The show opened at 10am and it was packed by 10:30. The venue is smaller than what you might be a custom to. We thought it made a nice change. It felt more intimate and you knew you didn’t have to walk a mile if you needed the loo! The day hosted leading camera and lens manufacturers, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Tamron, Sigma and Zeiss. Plus, a whole host of camera accessory brands, such as Billingham, Lowepro, Vanguard, Benro, Velbon, Domke, and Epson, had experts on hand to demonstrate their very latest products and give visitors the opportunity to touch, try and buy some of the hottest gear in the photography world today. Of course, we spoke to some of our favourite brands about their thoughts on the first ever CameraWorld LIVE! show and this is what they had to say... Andreas Georghiades, Marketing Manager, Fujifilm “It’s been great for people to get their
18 www.pixel.co.uk
hands on our products and get some feedback. The enthusiasm for photography in general shows us that more people are taking more pictures and we just love supporting the industry.” Luke Tait, National Sales Manager, ZEISS “CameraWorld Live is great because I can actually get in touch with the people who use our lenses. It’s really important because otherwise you lose touch.” Mark Baber, Technical Marketing Manager, Sony “The customers have been absolutely fantastic today. For us, the main attractions have been the A7r iii and the A9. A show likes this gives us a chance to talk to people one on one and really bring the cameras to life.” Clare Harvey-May, Pro Photographer Liason & In-Store Support Specialist, Olympus “Camera World Live is positioned great in the Calendar, it’s ready for Black Friday and great for Christmas.” Denise Sutton, Head of Sales, Billingham
“The show has been really really good for us. We’ve had lots of new customers that we have met and it’s been great to show them our new products. They are made in England so it’s nice to show them that they are only made 3 hours up the road!” At Pixel, we believe that engaging with customers in a personal way is so important. It’s easy to do everything through advertisements and social media but what happens when you lose connection with the people that are/were buying your products? It’s also such a great opportunity to get feedback, see what products are getting attention and learn what customers want, straight from their mouths! The value of this, we believe, is priceless. We also feel that CameraWorld LIVE! is at a great time of year. It’s great for the organised people getting in those Christmas presents and there is nothing else like it over the winter period. It’s the perfect chance to get a great deal at this time of year. Stay tuned for our CameraWorld Live 2017 short film, which will be released soon on www.pixel.co.uk soon!

The Big Interview
with Oskar Smolokowski I
t hasn’t been long since Polaroid last graced our pages, and after taking our InPrint section by storm last month, following the announcement of the return of analogue instant photographic, they return yet again this month to speak further of the ongoing evolution of the brand. In the 1990s and 2000s, the swift rise of digial technology eclipsed instant photography and Polaroid announced the end of instant film production in 2008. A dedicated group of instant photography fans, The Impossible Project, stepped in to buy the last remaining Polaroid factory and since then, they have been the only people in the world making film for vintage Polaroid cameras. The acquisition of the brand by The Impossible Project’s largest shareholder in Spring 2017 created the opportunity for Polaroid to

return to analogue instant photography and for The Impossible Project to delcare mission accomplished. “We are also very pleased to welcome the new ownership group to the Polaroid family, and excited to begin writing the next chapter in the story of the Polaroid brand,” said Polaroid President, Scott Hardy following the news of the aquisition. Of course, this caused deliberation in the minds of Polaroid’s many loyal consumers, but the brand shows no sign of slowing down, returning to our pages last month to speak of the launch of a new analogue instant camera, named the Polaroid OneStep 2, successor to the original Polaroid OneStep. Here in this issue, InPrint speaks to Polaroid’s CEO, Oskar Smolokowski to get the latest...
in print InPrint: Hi Oskar, thanks a lot for speaking to us! First off, has it always been the plan to switch Impossible to Polaroid Originals, or was it something that you recently decided to do? Oskar Smolokowski: The Impossible Project was founded to save Polaroid format instant film from extinction - to make sure that this amazing format wouldn’t go away and ensure a future for it. At the beginning in 2008, no one knew what would happen to Polaroid, or if The Impossible Project would succeed. As time went by, it became more and more probable that this amazing product would reunite with its rightful name, and finally in 2017 we managed to make it happen! InPrint: I know everyone is so grateful for what you guys have achieved. What was the reason behind the decision? OS: A big part of it was getting the film to a quality and speed of development we believe can be called Polaroid film. We’ve managed to reduce development time to 10-15 minutes compared to our previous films which took roughly 40 minutes to develop. And the quality improved a lot, too. At the end of the day, it’s much clearer for people to call a Polaroid photo a Polaroid photo, and not an Impossible Project Polaroid photo so we always wanted to do that - to communicate clearly. Finally, we really believe in and love the Polaroid brand, so reuniting it with
“We’re still focused on the future of the integral white frame format and everything around this beautiful medium. I’d say the biggest change will be the scale and heightened expectations for the products. It’s just as difficult to make instant film as it was before, but now we’ll make more of it” Oskar Smolokowski
the core product was the best possible conclusion of The Impossible Project.
could read about what Impossible was afterwards.
InPrint: Are there going to be many differences between Impossible and Polaroid Originals?
InPrint: We admire your confidence. Are you happy with the reaction and buzz that the switch has created?
OS: Definitely a few, but the core mission is similar - we are still focused on the future of the integral white frame format and everything around this beautiful medium. I’d say the biggest change will be the scale and heightened expectations for the products. It’s still just as difficult to make instant film as it was before, but now we’ll make more of it, and cameras too.
OS: Absolutely! Very happy and humbled by the response around the world.
InPrint: This change was out of the blue for consumers, so what was the reason for just going dark and switching? It was a bold move. Were you concerned that people would get confused and not know what was going on? OS: Not really, we had faith that our community would figure it out, and for the people outside of it, most of them never heard about The Impossible Project and what we’ve been doing. So to them it was like - oh Polaroid is back making instant film! And then they
InPrint: Can you give us any hints as to what’s coming next for the Polaroid Originals brand? OS: We just launched a new brand and a new camera! More news next year. InPrint: We can’t wait to watch the Polaroid Originals saga unfold! Hopefully we’ll catch up soon, but a huge thanks for speaking with us.

COMPETITION WINNERS SEE THE PROOF IS IN THE PRINTING For more information about Genesis Imaging please visit genesisimaging.co.uk
Last year the photography trade website Pixel.co.uk launched its inaugural photography competition, with Fujifilm UK as the overall sponsor. Here and ahead of our next competition, we take a look back at last year’s category victories, their winning images and their trip to Genesis Imaging Lab
T
he competition is open to registered users of the Pixel website and is made up of five different photographic categories: Landscape, Fashion, Wildlife, Street and Monochrome. Here, we take a look at last year’s winners. As part of the overall prize, Fujifilm offered to present the winner of each category with a 30” x 40” print of their winning image. In addition, the winners were invited for a very special behind-thescenes tour of the professional printing lab Genesis Imaging. Guided by owner Ken Sethi and Steve Butler, Print Manager, the photographers
were taken through the meticulous process that Genesis apply to all of the images they print and given advice on how to prepare their photographs to achieve the best possible results with their prints. For the professional photographers it was the first time they were able to go ‘behind the scenes’ with exclusive insight into the process and see how their award winning images transformed from digital file to print. Afterwards, Fujifim’s Peter Wigington presented each their winning image, printed on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Digital Paper Type DP II, part of Fujifilm’s Original Photo Paper range.
MEET THE WINNERS Simon Barker (Landscape) Simon was unable to make the visit to Genesis due to attending the birth of his first child! An additional congratulations to Simon!

Image taking and all the elements involved combined with my constant love for fashion trends gave me the drive to start producing photography of my own and I have now shot front covers of magazines from London to New York. My skill set includes advanced knowledge of studio lighting as well as medium format systems such as the Fuji GFX which my printed image was shot with.”
