T
he event, which has been a highlight in the industry calendar since 2005 and sponsored by both Sony and Nikon for 2016, played host to a busy roomful of people from across all areas of the imaging sector; from distribution to manufacturing and all scales of retail, from independent, multiple and mass channel alike. The Pixel Trade Awards were launched in 2005 in order to recognise the high achievements and to congratulate those who strive for excellence in all corners of the imaging trade. With 2016 being the event’s 12th anniversary, these principles have not changed and after an early drinks reception and a chance to talk over dinner, the winners of the unique trade event’s 12 categories were announced.
Elliott Mansfield, Title Manager at Pixel Magazine said: “It’s so great to see the industry getting together at the Pixel Trade Awards. It’s become such a recognised fixture in the industry diary and the awards always signify a highlight of each year as they celebrate the excellence in the imaging sector.” He continued: “We’re extremely grateful to both Nikon and Sony for supporting the event this year and for making it possible, and I’d like to congratulate each and every winner of 2016 for their well deserved awards”. The 12th annual Pixel Trade Awards also included the official announcement of the inaugural Pixel Photography Competition, the results of which we will highlight in our January edition of the magazine.

HOLD STEADY Pixel spoke with Ron Deprez, UK Sales Director at Digital Distribution about the Removu range and he told us: “Although the recent change in distribution of GoPro has not been good for the photo channel, GoPro still account for over 80% market share in the sector. This dominance means that accessories are more targeted than they are with stills cameras, and the financial commitment involved for the retailer is much lower”. With a good number of stabilisation brands coming to market in recent times, we asked Ron what it was about Removu that led them to ally with the brand. He said: “We spent a good amount of time speaking to a number of gimbal manufacturers, but ultimately we were taken by the sheer enthusiasm and creativity that we experienced from the guys at Removu. As well as this, the designs coming from Removu are not only innovative, but there is also a synergy across the range with products that can be used together, or individually, to really enhance the use of GoPro cameras and GoPro compatible mounting systems”. The range coming from Removu includes the S1, the M1+A1 Waterproof Bluetooth Microphone, R1+ and P1 remote viewers, which can be worn on the wrist or mounted, again using standard GoPro mounts. It’s a comprehensive offering and has positioned the brand as the perfect counterparts for anyone using GoPro compatible mountings to shoot video.

The Removu R1+ and P1 remote viewers easily allow users to track their footage, wirelessly, effortlessly and immediately. The unit can be worn on the wrist or mounted for ease of use and as an intuitive form of monitoring. The real defining USP with this brand, and particularly the S1, is that it’s the world’s first handheld AND mountable gimbal device. When mounted on the handle, the S1 has a joystick

Beyond this, the joystick can be detached from the handle to serve as a wireless remote control unit, opening up a world of potential for moviemaking. Out of the box, or hard case as it is, the S1 comes with waterproof housing for GoPro, including an extended back for when you choose to mount the audio receiver as a part of the M1+A1 Waterproof Bluetooth Microphone, and adapters for various GoPro cameras. From photo retailers to through to schools labs, Epson print solutions have continued to revolutionise businesses in 2016
Pret-a-Portrait Production Manager Chloe Peters
BLUE SKY PRINTING
Blue Sky Printing opened their doors inside Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford in March 2015 and have had Epson equipment from the very beginning. Starting off their business with an Epson D700 Printer and the Epson Stylus Pro 9900 Inkjet large-format printer, the photo retail store has recently upgraded their equipment.
Professional quality In addition to the usual customer coming into the

than we had previously been able to achieve. In addition, the software makes it easy to adapt our production plans at short notice to respond to specific circumstances when necessary.
“It’s great to see that the Epson D700 even fulfils professional photographers’ needs. We had feedback that the print quality actually comes close to the C- Type print (chromogenic colour print) while being a much quicker process with the photographic print being done within seconds.”
PRET-A-PORTRAIT James Callaghan
Store owner James Callaghan explains: “In April we purchased a D7 Photo Studio Kiosk and an Epson P9000 large-format printer from Tetenal and I have to say both machines work perfectly and are extremely reliable.” With 10 years of experience in the photo retail industry, James has gained trust in the Epson brand over the years which has further grown since opening Blue Sky Printing last year.
AS a photographic business specialising in school photography, the team at Pret-a-Portrait knows exactly what it means to process photos in high volumes, printing around 3,000 photos per day during their busy season. To keep more control over their printing process, Pret-a-Portrait decided to bring all their printing in-house with two Epson SureLab SL-D3000 machines Pret-a-Portrait were so impressed with how the first D3000 performed that they recently added a second. Production Manager Chloe Peters explained why,
“I have always worked with Epson and to me the quality of prints is simply unique! That’s why I had no doubt when upgrading our photo printing equipment. In my opinion the quality of competitive ink jet printers simply doesn’t marry up with Epson’s machines.”
Having both machines means that all our print production goes through the same workflow which makes life much simpler, and makes it much easier to respond to urgent orders quickly. " To ensure they were able to maintain their new investment, Pret-a-Portrait also took out a peace of mind support service contract with Tetenal's Epson authorised service centre.
We need our equipment to be working so we took out technical warranties which gives us telephone assistance, on-site technical support through an engineer and hardware parts for less than £5.00 per day to cover both machines! In practice things have been exactly as promised. Tetenal’s technical support has been fantastic; fast response and quick solutions.
"We wanted to buy a second printer to keep up with growing production demand. We had been very happy with our first D3000; it’s excellent print quality, it’s cost-efficiency and the simple to use software meant it had been a great success.
Contact Tetenal to discuss how Epson print solutions could revolutionise your business.
We are now able to manage all our printing in house which improves our margins and provides a faster turnaround for our customers.

T
he Christmas break represents a time when we find ourselves enjoying the only holidays where most people get to enjoy collective time off work. It’s a time when the act of taking meaningful photographs enjoy a real and tangible spike with familiy and friends getting together in numbers that aren’t often achievable throughout the rest of the year. The results of this are the memories that are captured and it’s our hope that more and more people will print these memories to share
(physically) and display in their homes. So what are the manufacturers and suppliers doing to encourage this as we motor into a brand new year? The team at Pixel spoke with Ron Deprez from Digital Distribution and Katie Frost from Swains International to get the lowdown. Pixel: Hi Ron, Katie. We all know that photo-printing has experienced a dip in volumes over recent years, are you still seeing surges of demand through seasonal periods like Christmas (or post Christmas)? Ron Deprez: We are relatively new to manufacturing frames, only starting 5 years ago, so we are still experiencing growth throughout the year. November is very strong due to a stock promotion we run but January always seems to be the strongest month for sales. Katie Frost: Christmas is a very busy time for photo printing and every year consumers are looking for that “something different” gift idea. It could be a cushion with the grandchildren printed on it or a canvas with a collage of the year’s best pictures. We know that more images than ever are being captured, the trick is encouraging people to print them, and
Christmas is possibly the best opportunity to achieve this. P: Do you run regular sales drives to encourage orders during the holidays? RD: It’s good to have promotions running throughout the year. This year we have given away tickets to football and rugby finals at Wembley Stadium along with free bottles of wine with all orders. Our current and most popular promotion offers dealers to order their stock for Christmas now and not pay until the

in print end of January, or February with December orders. KF: Here at Swains we are always launching promotions and trying to give our customers the best possible reasons to place their orders with us. Our latest promotion for frames and albums was a huge success and we have now re-launched it alongside Vodafone. We were giving away staff room essential items like kettles, toasters, microwaves and DAB radios. The thinking behind it was that it’s nice to give something to the staff who work hard to promote and sell the products purchased from Swains. P: What would you suggest are the latest trends when it comes to photo frames? RD: Over the last year, distressed and driftwood designs along with the more natural colours have generated the most interest from our mid-priced ranges. The seasonal trend moves more towards silver plated frames from Evergreen along with the more premium products from our Elizabeth Carrington range. KF: White frames are hugely popular and we are still seeing increased sales in square frames, thanks mainly to Instagram. Collection frames are also more popular as consumers can showcase more of their favourite memories in one place. Instant photos are also seeing a massive revival with Fuji Instax and the Impossible Project refurbishing Polaroid cameras; this has led us to produce a frame specifically for this retro Polaroid format, retailing at £16.99. We are also selling Instax Photo albums, retailing at £6.99 and a host of other gift ideas for Christmas such as Christmas tree decoration retailing at £5.99. P: What else is new with regards to photo frame design? RD: With a society that captures more images than any generation before, our sales of 6” x 6” frames are now on par with 6” x 4” and the fastest growing format is in
multi-aperture, particularly for Instagram. Social media has touched many areas of life, as we know; and the photo frame market has not escaped its influence with the square frame format now enjoying a significant share for the first time ever. It is probably the most important change to our industry, introducing a younger frame customer.
KF: Hearts are very fashionable and frames including text like ‘Home’, ‘Love’ and ‘Family’, as they are displayed as a type of soft furnishing and are changed on a much more regular basis nowadays. As a result, consumers are looking for quality at the right price. P: What advice would you give to dealers to encourage sales of these products in-store? RD: Our customers tend to know a lot better than I do about generating their own sales. I would however suggest that social media with these new frame formats and multi-aperture are embraced fully. I also believe that the general consumer is inclined to buy British when given the option, but I guess I would say that. KF: I’d say that a good display goes a long way in attracting the eye and putting creative ideas into the minds of the potential buyer is paramount. 9 times out of 10 I would suggest frames are an impulse purchase so the retailer needs help to create that impulse.

CELEBRATING 65 YEARS
Employees Natalie and Gemma in store
Clemens Photography, this year celebrates 65 years in the retail trade. A family-run affair, Pixel got in touch with its owner, Roy Clemens to discuss the then, the now and what’s ‘in store’ for the future
C
lemens Photography was founded in 1951 by Cliff Clemens, who managed the store until his retirement in 1987. Staying in the family, his daughter and son-in-law took over and got their first minilab in 1991. This was a landmark moment that gave Clemens Photography control of quality and turnaround. Current owner, Roy Clemens (Cliff’s son) and business partner, Ian proceeded to take over in 2011, with nearly everything now produced in-house including large format printing and photo gifts. They have recently invested in three new kiosks running FUJIFILM Imagine software. We spoke to Roy Clemens about his business and his views on the photography and photo printing industry… 65 years, congratulations! How do you plan on celebrating? We recently placed a full two page advert in our local newspaper, but haven’t really had much spare time to do any celebrating yet!

How has the photography/printing industry changed over the years? Photography has experienced a huge change with regards to digital and the role of the Internet. You really need to stay in touch with all the new advances and offer the latest models and services to keep customers happy. We try to offer the best possible customer experience and quality of product to ensure customers keep coming back! You must have experienced lots of successes (and failures!) over the years what has worked well for you? Luckily very few failures! Recent successes have included our new kiosks - it’s so easy to connect to mobiles now! Photoblocks are selling well, another recent addition. What are your predictions for the future of the industry? And what would you like to see? Well who can say what may happen? I expect
mobiles to become even more dominant, but I hope people learn that the best way to take photographs will always be a high quality camera. I hope film carries on its resurgence as we still sell and develop it! Nice to see instant cameras back again too!
