THEO GEORGHIADES

The Big Interview:

Theo Georghiades Continued...

“We announced many new products in January, GFX, X100F and X-T20 which all launched February & March”

Pixel: 2016 was a fantastic year for Fujifilm. How has 2017 been in comparison and what are your expectations for the remainder of the year? Theo: 2017 has started off extremely well for Fujifilm. We announced many new products in January, GFX, X100F and X-T20, which all launched February & March. Sales have been strong across all three products, which has given us some very good momentum. Pixel: Which of Fujifilm’s product lines have seen the most attention from retailers and enthusiasts so far this year and why do you think this is?

6 www.pixel.co.uk

Theo: Out of all the new products in 2017 the biggest attention has come from the new Mirrorless Medium Format system, Fujifilm GFX50s. Since we announced the development of the product at Photokina 2016 the interest in the product has been immense. The GFX system has raised the brand awareness of Fujifilm to another level and demonstrates to the photographic industry that we continue to innovate in new and exciting high-end photographic hardware. Retailers are very enthusiastic to get behind it as new technology drives traffic to their stores, which in turn converts into sales. Pixel: We saw your stand at The Photography Show this year. It looked

THEO GEORGHIADES

incredible and constantly busy. What was the feedback from visitors you met at the show? What products of yours caught their attention the most? Theo: We had a new stand and new position at The Photography Show

this year. It was the first time for photo enthusiasts to get their hands on the GFX50s. There were a lot of keen photographers that wanted to handle the camera and see what it can do. We had some beautiful images printed around the stand, demonstrating the quality of the product. Other key products that attracted the main

attention were the X100F and the established X-T2. Pixel: We see that you were at NAB last month? How successful/ worthwhile do you find events such as The Photography Show and NAB? Does Fujifilm itself get a lot of out of them? Theo: We value every opportunity we get to speak to our end users and showcase the best of Fujifilm X Series cameras and Fujinon lenses. Pixel: We hear nothing but amazing things about your GFX. Did you anticipate such an overwhelming positive response? Theo: We were confident that the market was going to respond well to GFX as we are confident in our product planning team in making quality products. We involve many professional photographers in our early planning stages, as we want to make desirable products, which photographers want to buy.

emergence of 4K TVs, consumers like to take their own footage and watch their videos back on their 4K TVs.

Theo: Instax is an exciting product category and as one of the leading imaging manufacturers we always have an eye on new market trends and developments, however we cannot comment on potential future products.

Theo: VR is an exciting new technology and Fujfiilm will always look at new relevant technologies that will help us evolve for the future.

Pixel: With regards to 4K equipment, what are your most advanced products currently in the market and why? Have you seen much of an increase in the demand for 4K recently? Theo: 4K is a big buzz term being branded about by many companies. We took our time before we launched our first 4K product and we feel that the X-T2 is a

TOSHIBA REVIEW

Pixel Review:

Toshiba Canvio Premium Drive

Back in March last year Toshiba Europe GmbH (TEG) Storage Peripherals Division announced the launch of the Canvio Premium portable hard drive. Pixel had the chance to get hands-on with the drive and here, we report back on our experience

I

n such a digital age, memory and storage are some of the, if not the most important aspects of any industry and preserving documents, files and images is crucial. Of course there are a huge range of drives and memory cards out there today, but Toshiba have really hit the nail on the head with their Canvio Premium drive. Allowing easy, secure and safe file storage and with diamond-cut edges, the sleek and stylish, high-quality aluminium Canvio Premium is ideal for use with high-end notebooks and includes a USB Type-CTM adapter to connect with topof-the-range devices. This sophisticated

12 www.pixel.co.uk

external HDD, available in silver and dark grey metallic, is perfect for the modern lifestyle-oriented consumer looking for a superior storage unit. The Canvio Premium sets itself apart from the crowd with its shiny aluminium design, which looks good and also should provide a good measure of protection against knocks and bumps. The shirtpocket-sized drive weighs just 250g and connects to your computer via the supplied USB 3 cable. A USB 3 to USB C adapter also comes with the drive for connection to newer Macintoshes. Able to store even large digital

TOSHIBA REVIEW libraries with up to 3TB storage capacity, the Canvio Premium is perfect for the fashion-conscious wanting to keep their precious movies, music and photos safe. Pocket-sized and easy to carry with a soft pouch included, it combines practicality with a fast USB 3.0 port, making transfers at home, work or on-the-go speedy and straightforward. The case itself measures 109 x 78 x 13.5mm. This means it is fairly chunky but still easily stowed away in a bag. It tips the scales at 165 grams. For added convenience, remote access software means users don’t even need to carry the Canvio Premium to access their files. With Canvio Premium at home,

“Able to store even large digital libraries with up to 3TB storage capacity, the Canvio Premium is perfect for the fashion-conscious wanting to keep their precious movies, music and photos safe” connected to a laptop, users can still access all of their files, photos, music and movies on any computer, smartphone or tablet. The external HDD also comes with 10GB of free cloud storage for “alwaysavailable” copies of important files. Because it can be locked with a unique password, users do not have to worry about unauthorised users accessing important data stored on the hard drive. For convenience, backup software supplied with the drive allows scheduling of automatic backup at any time and any day. The Canvio Premium is

FB Mono Gloss Baryta 320

also available in a Mac ready-use model, the Canvio Premium for Mac, already formatted with HFS+ for daily use with Mac devices, making it possible to transfer data from and to a Mac without the need to reformat. The USB 3 connection is, of course, compatible with those universal earlier USB 2 sockets, but USB 2 ties users down to a transfer rate of around 35MB per second while USB 3 opens up this connection to three times that speed. A portable drive like this one won’t attain the full theoretical 640MB per second, but at least the connection isn’t going to be a total blockage. The drive as delivered includes two Mac applications. One is the HDD Password Tool, lightweight security software that enforces a password before users can actually access the drive, providing the utmost security. The value of Toshiba’s HDD Password Tool is that it puts no extra burden on the Mac’s central processor, maximising the read/write speeds. The other is PogoPlug, a remote storage facility that offers Toshiba external HDD consumers 10GB of free cloud storage. The devices are available in dark grey metallic and silver metallic, in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB.

New Managing Director at Tetenal Europe GmbH Continued...

“I am delighted to be handing over the reins of the Tetenal Group to an experienced businessman in Daniel Middendorf who, together with the international Tetenal management team, will continue to actively drive forward the customer-oriented strategy and development of our company,” stated Matthias Hübener on 31 March at a company party celebrating the handover in Norderstedt. Matthias Hübener had taken over the business from his father Fritz Hübener in 1993. With single-minded determination, he developed the Tetenal Group into a world-renowned company with a strong position in the PHOTO & IMAGING market and other branches of the chemical industry. As an entrepreneurial personality, Matthias Hübener also sat on a number of boards in business and industry. Although Matthias Hübener is withdrawing from the day-to-day

operational running of the company, as the main shareholder, he will continue to be associated with Tetenal in an advisory capacity. Daniel Middendorf has extensive experience in senior management positions across a number of industries. The 53-year-old father of three studied Business Administration in Trier and started his professional career in Sales and Marketing in the consumer goods industry. During the course of his career he has held management positions in the consumer goods industry, in companies supplying technical-industrial consumer goods and in the automotive industry. “My objective is to continue to develop Tetenal with its brands in the next few years as a b2b-oriented imaging specialist, to strengthen and expand its leading position internationally,” explained Daniel Middendorf at the handover celebration.
