Bowens Announce brand new lighting range at Photokina 2016 At a time when Bowens have seen themselves in the news a great deal, Pixel sees the brand new range of lighting in Germany; Generation X. The new products, described as ‘revolutionary and gamechanging’ by the company’s Technical Director, John Gass, mark a renaissance for the legacy lighting manufacturer that was recently acquired by Aurelius, as reported in our last edition of Pixel. Generation X comprises two new flash systems: XMT, an allin-one battery unit for location lighting, and XMS, engineered to be the go-to system for photographers who need functionrich and completely reliable flash in the studio. Announcing the launch, David Hollingsworth, Marketing Manager, said: “Generation X is just the first step in re-launching Bowens to the imaging world. These barrierbreaking new products combine state of the art technology and cutting edge design and are the result of many months of very intensive market research and product development. They will be the vanguard of our plans for

ongoing and regular new-unit rollouts in coming months and years.” Generation X – at a glance: The 500Ws XMT boasts TTL and high speed sync functionality (up to 1/8000s) compatible with Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras: 9-stops of flash power adjustment; flash durations as short as 1/10309s: faster recycle times than ever before. The easy swap lithium-ion battery provides up to 500 full power flashes per charge: rear curtain sync; sync delay and strobe mode allow for creative setups on the move. The XMS, available in 500,750 and 1000Ws models feature multi-voltage operation, offers faster recycling times and flash durations. The XMSR model includes Bowens ‘Sync Offset’ functionality, enabling photographers to embrace any brand of camera to shoot at high sync speeds, up to 1/8000s. Retail prices for the XMS series: XMS 500: £799, incl. VAT. XMS 750: £899 incl. VAT. XMS 1000: £999 incl. VAT. Retail price for the XMT 500: £1,199 incl. VAT.

Bowens also welcome new Sales Director to the team Terry Caws has been in and around the imaging trade for more than 35 years now. He then moved to Calumet and worked in distribution management and later Interfit Photographic, before launching

his own commercial consultancy. Terry told Pixel: “I have worked with Bowens inventory for many years as a distributor, so I am very familiar with the products. The launch of the new Generation X lines, under the umbrella of the highly proactive and forward-thinking Aurelius management, makes this a very exciting time for this legacy lighting company and a signature moment for me.”

Leica Announce the Sofort: Premium Instant Photography in Collaboration with Fujifilm Leica have stated that the SOFORT is: “Different from other instant cameras in many ways. The inimitable, timeless style of the Leica SOFORT was created specially by the Leica design team in Germany, uniting the retro-modern magic of instant photography with the renowned quality and originality of the Leica brand”. This collaboration with Fujifilm demonstrates the brand’s

willingness to share technologies and brings the company directly into an area of the market that they have previously not touched. It may be one of the most expensive instant cameras on the market, but it’s also the cheapest Leica that your customers will buy this year! Available in Mint, Orange and White, the SOFORT has an RRP of £215 inc VAT.

Canon’s New Cameras Grace the Stage With the 5DIV, XC15, M5, concept 8K motion picture camera and a 120MP sensor all on display at Photokina, Canon keeps excitement levels (and footfall) high. On a packed stand throughout the show, Canon gave visitors a veritable imaging feast, with a broad range of new products, concepts and the opportunity to get hands on throughout the event. One of the heroes of the stand was the recently launched 5D MKIV, which inevitably drew audiences who were keen to see the latest improvements and functions in the latest 5D firsthand. Having also recently announced the XC15, their compact, 4K/

Full HD video camcorder with stills capability, Canon explained that the camera is aimed at content creators such as news gatherers and independent or documentary film makers. The new product follows in the footsteps of the popular previous model, the XC10. The XC15 combines the most respected elements of its forerunner with new and improved features and functionality, including a fast autofocus and 24p frame rate option for cinematographers. The XC15 is available now with an RRP of £2,409 inc VAT. Elsewhere on the Canon stand, visitors could see the 8K movie concept, which requires a staggering 4x monitors in order to split the vast amount of information being processed by the camera. This, along with Canon’s flagship M5 mirrorless camera and a demonstration of a fully functional 120MP Canon developed sensor, Canon managed to retain their mantle as innovators, pushing boundaries and imaging technology with every step.

PHOTOKINA 2016

Fujifilm’s Game-changing GFX System Lands at Photokina 2016 Continued...

H

e continued to elaborate with greater detail, outlining that the company will release their mirrorless digital camera, the Fujifilm GFX 50s, which features the Fujifilm G Format 43.8 X 32.9mm sensor with 51.4 megapixels and six lenses (3 at launch), introduced under the new Fujinon GF Lens series of interchangeable lenses - early in 2017. President Kenji Sukeno explained that: “Over the course of its history, which extends over 80 years, Fujifilm has developed and manufactured photographic films with advanced image resolution, outstanding colour and tone reproduction, an extensive range of professional cameras under the consistent philosophy that ‘a camera is a tool for producing art,’ and high quality Fujinon lenses which form an indispensable part of camera systems. All of these technologies have been collated to develop the GFX.” The new GFX boasts a medium-format sensor and a completely new kind of mirrorless system and uses the “X-Processor Pro” imaging processor. Fujifilm stated in their press briefing that: “Adopting a larger format gives Fujifilm’s new system the enhancement to its ability to capture “texture quality,” “stereoscopic effect” and “aerial feeling,” which cannot be attained even by substantially increasing the sensor’s pixel count.” The new medium-format mirrorless camera houses the all-new large diameter “G Mount” and incorporates a large 43.8 X 32.9mm CMOS

8 www.pixel.co.uk

sensor. With an effective pixel count of 51.4 million, the camera promises superior sharpness and image quality that will satisfy even the highest level of professional photographer. The sensor’s 51.4 megapixels can be adapted to various aspect ratios, including 4:3 (default), 3:2, 1:1, 4:5, 6:7 and 6:17, which were historically available in large and medium-format film cameras. Compared to conventional medium-format digital SLR cameras, the new GFX is of a much lighter weight, achieving a more compact form factor. With regards to functionality, the camera follows in the footsteps of the X Series by featuring numerous physical buttons and dials, and is designed with an ergonomic grip, shaped carefully and optimised for the camera body and lenses. This new model becomes Fujifilm’s first model to use a detachable electronic viewfinder, which can be removed when using an external monitor or wanting to make the system lighter still. In addition, an optional adapter makes it possible to fit the EVF in any angle, giving greater freedom in the choice of shooting angle. Other optional accessories will be released at the same time of launch in early 2017, including a Vertical Battery Grip, which enhances functionality when shooting in the portrait orientation. The camera also supports tethered shooting and will be compatible with various RAW conversion application software.

Theo Georghaide, General Manager at Fujifilm UK Pixel caught up with Theo Georghaides to get his view on the launch of the new system from Fujifilm. He told us: “Fujifilm are in a unique place, where we are able to draw on the heritage of the brand and its historic medium format technology. Look back to products like the GX680 and you’ll get an idea of our heritage and ability to produce excellence in medium format. Theo continued: “We always wanted to evolve the X series to the point where everyone had the right solution for their photography and it was important for us to produce a camera that complimented the X-Series, not cannibalised it. Now we’ve launched the GFX, we’ve basically created a new market for the serious photographer. That’s where we are now, at the point where we can develop and grow a new market in photography”. We asked Theo about pricing. He told us: “We won’t be releasing any pricing until (around) the end of January, but I can tell you that a GFX camera and any single lens, will come in at significantly less than $10K”.

PHOTOKINA 2016

Fujifilm also announced six new lenses for the GFX System

The new range of Fujinon GF lenses have been designed specifically for the GFX and have been announced specifically for the new G Mount. Taking advantage of the mirrorless system’s structure, the G Mount has the short flange back distance of just 26.7mm to shorten the back focus distance as much as possible. This promises to prevent vignetting and to achieve edge-to-edge sharpness.

Photokina 2016: Continued...

The doors have closed for Photokina 2016 and what a show it’s been! Plenty of surprises and, thankfully, lots of exciting new gear announced at the show this year, with lots of reasons to keep customers returning in the coming months. Pixel was in Cologne for the majority of the event and (beyond our cover story) we have compiled our picks from the show. Read on for more…

I

t’s a fair reflection on the event to say that it’s much smaller than it used to be [but then, so is the industry in general - and Mars bars.] In addition as highlighted in our pre-event report, the target has largely shifted from trade buyers and press, to a predominantly consumer audience. The PR team driving the audience to the show adopted direct marketing tactics, planting photo-booths in and around the city centre, offering passport style photos which included discounts and offers to be redeemed within the Kohlnmesse on the back. They reached out to the creative communities by laying emphasis on the various galleries that could be found throughout the venue and, of course, their own art/print sales. It is a true reflection and frankly, there’s nothing wrong with it. The Photography Show in the UK has embraced the consumer market wholeheartedly, introducing a buzz to the show with lots of attractions, speakers, demos and a range of genuinely interesting photo opportunities too. If anything, the natural and inevitable shape-shifting of these events gives the trade visitor an excellent opportunity to take the temperature of the market; see what people are picking up on and most importantly, to witness the next generation of photographers coming through the doors. Photokina 2016 (as with TPS) saw its fair share of trade visitors nonetheless; lots of trade buyers and lots (if not, slightly fewer) journalists. Even though a fair amount of product announcements preceded the event, there was still plenty of excitement throughout

10 www.pixel.co.uk

the show with some expected announcements, some curveballs and a particular bombshell that stopped everyone in their tracks - yes, I am talking about our cover piece, Fujifilm’s GFX camera system. So onwards then for the Pixel Photokina round up - starting with:

Lumix GH5 Announced

With a host of exciting announcements during Photokina 2016, Panasonic promises an early to mid-2017 arrival of the GH5.

An unexpected addition to busy launch schedule during Photokina comes in the shape of Sony’s full-frame successor to the a99 II. With Sony having a certain knack to keeping their product launches quiet, one of the more unexpected, but welcome announcements during Photokina, was the a99 II. The new camera made an appearance during the company’s press briefing and

PHOTOKINA 2016 reaffirmed its commitment to produce A-mount interchangeable lens cameras. The new camera combines the best of Sony’s digital imaging innovations, including a new Hybrid Phase Detection AF system with exclusive Sony A-mount features, such as Translucent Mirror Technology (TMT). The result is a pro end camera that should appeal particularly to sports and wildlife photographers. Sony’s newly developed Phase Detection AF System is capable of ‘full-time AF’ and is the first implementation of 4D FOCUS in the full-frame a series, bringing a new level of AF performance to a99 II users. The Hybrid Phase Detection AF System is enabled by combining a precision 79-point dedicated phase detection AF sensor with 399 focal plane phase detection AF points, to produce a 79 hybrid cross AF point array. These cross points promise incredibly precise autofocus performance and advanced subject tracking of any moving objects right across the image, at high speed. The back-illuminated full-frame 42.4MP Exmor R CMOS sensor benefits from a gapless-on-chip design and allows for fast readout of large volumes of data as well as being efficient in its light gathering ability. The net result is very high sensitivity with low noise, wide dynamic range and 42.4MP resolution across an ISO range of 10025600, expandable to ISO 50 – 102,400. Video The a99 II enables internal 4K movie recording for ultimate high resolution video in the pro friendly XAVC S format. It is capable of recording high quality footage at 100Mbps for 4K recording. A new ‘Slow and Quick’ mode supports both slow motion and quick motion. Frame rates from 1 fps to 120 fps (100 fps) can be selected in 8 steps for up to 60x (50x) quick motion and 5x (4x) slow motion recording. A number of features designed for a professional movie production workflow are included such as picture profiles, time code and HDMI clear output and the new a99 II now also offers gamma assist for real time S-Log monitoring and a zebra mode for easier exposure adjustment.

a99 II – Key Features • Full-frame 4D Focus: Innovative Hybrid Phase Detection AF system with accurate 79 hybrid cross AF points and continuous shooting at up to 12fps • High resolution 42.4 effective MP 35mm Full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS sensor • Newly developed optical 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system • Newly designed downsized body • Internal 4K movie recording in XAVC-S format with host of pro-orientated movie features

3 LEGGED THING

3 Legged Thing:

An Interview with Danny Lenihan

Pixel Magazine speaks to 3 Legged Thing’s Chief Executive Officer, Danny Lenihan to get the low down on the company, their products and plans for the future

counterfold legs and a detachable monopod. Since this technology went off patent, there are tonnes of brands that have adopted it, but to me, that’s all they’ve done. You could line up the top ten tripod brands in the world, and put their flagship products side by side, stick gaffa tape over the branding, and you’d be hard pressed to identify which product is from which brand. I was frustrated with the products I had – I personally owned six tripods, each with different capabilities and intended uses, and it seemed to me that there was a gap in the market for a product which encapsulated multiple uses.

Legged Thing is a British Tripod Company, specializing in compact, stable and multi-functional tripod systems. 3LT is a small business, but strives to innovate in one of the most competitive industries. Pixel: You guys are widely recognised as “the rock and roll” brand of the photo industry. Was this intentional or something that has come naturally? Danny Lenihan: All we’ve really done is injected some realism into the industry. The fact that we are perceived as “rock and roll” is more to do with our slightly anti-establishment approach both to brand presentation, and product design. We are bold - people want you to cross the line occasionally; push boundaries and press buttons. Pixel: Tell us about 3LT’s journey. DL: What started as a pocket-money project has exploded into a multi-million pound global brand. Our first products were very much a mish-mash of ideas, and relatively unpolished. They were still very unique – we were the first brand to introduce colour as a feature, and the first to offer multiple section centre columns. Obviously we’ve grown since then – both mechanically and physically, and our mantra to adopt as much functionality as possible within our design process has proven to be the key to our growth. We took on investment back in early 2012, at which point we were really only selling to B&H and Adorama in New York, and Camera World in the UK, and the ensuing four years has seen expansion into over 1000 stores in 40 countries, and still growing. Pixel: How have things expanded since your inception in the shed from Stagsden? DL: At Photokina 2012 nobody knew who we were. At Photokina 2014 we had distributors from 22 countries actively seek us out to talk to us about distribution in their

14 www.pixel.co.uk

Danny Lenihan, Chief Executive Officer

respective territories. At Photokina 2016, we had back-to-back meetings scheduled across six days, with some provision for walk-in enquiries, which far exceeded the previous years combined. We’re also seeing a lot more connectivity with other manufacturers. Pixel: What would you outline as your Key USP’s when compared to other leading brands in your space? DL: I think I’ll start to answer this with our two brand slogans: • We don’t make tripods. We make tripod systems. • Built to enable. Created to inspire. Those are the key elements of our brand success. We are constantly innovating in an arena, which has seen little innovation since Gitzo first introduced the Traveller back in 1983 (I think), with

Pixel: How should the dealer channel go about stocking 3LT products and what kind of support do you offer with regards to POS etc? DL: We tend to discourage big buy–ins. We prefer to start small and build as the relationship progresses. Being that we have a very small range compared to our competitors, it’s really easy for dealers to hold every sku for less than a couple of grand investment. We offer in store training, with our sales team, and sometimes I’ll do this, so the dealers and their staff get a unique insight into the products and why they are made the way they are, from the person that designed them. We are working on our first in-store solution at the moment, but we are mindful that floor space is scarce, so we are looking at alternative ways of getting the brand messages across. Pixel: What can we expect from 3LT as we rapidly head towards the end of 2016 and into 2017? DL: More of the same really. We’ve got our third incarnation of our budget line, Punks, coming to the market in early November, and that’s a really exciting launch for us. The pressure we’ve been under, as a brand, to bring out a product that is more price accessible, but still indicative of the unique styling and functionality of 3LT has been a big challenge, but we’ve done a great job of creating the right products.

Tamron Introduce Their Ultimate Ultra-Telephoto Zoom: The All-New G2

This second generation G2 zoom lens from Tamron offers advanced features, enhanced performance, and improved ergonomics with faster AF speed and enhanced VC

A

fter the official announcement of the new SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2, Pixel managed to meet with exclusive UK distributors, Intro 2020, for a closer look at the premium telephoto lens in a quiet corner of the Tamron stand at Photokina. The new lens, which is available from midOctober, will come in at £1,350 inclusive of VAT, and boasts a brand-new optical design, which is entirely different to the existing model. Three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements completely

eliminate axial and transverse chromatic aberrations. The design also features an upgraded optical construction (21 elements in 13 groups) and leverages improvements in manufacturing technology. As a result, the lens delivers high resolution, improved sharpness and overall better performance. The second generation G2 lens from Tamron builds on the success of the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, which launched in December 2013 and continues

to successfully meet photographers’ needs in the ultra-telephotography category, with three mount options: Canon, Nikon, Sony. The new G2 version was developed to provide superior optical performance that’s available from some of today’s high res DSLRs and to add improvements to several features including speed and accuracy of AF and VC (Auto Focus/Vibration Compensation). The new G2 will not, however, supersede the existing model and both will remain in production for the foreseeable future. Flex Zoom Lock The new ‘Flex Zoom Lock’ mechanism enables the locking of the zoom ring at any position and quickly locks or unlocks the zoom at any position simply by sliding the zoom ring. Additionally, the conventional Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation. Fluorine Coating The front surface of the lens element is coated with fluorine coating, the hugely impressive and protective fluorine compound that is water and oil repellant.

The Big Interview There’s a new lens manufacturer hitting the scene in the UK market. The sudden appearance of IRIX lenses at this year’s Photography Show in Birmingham caught Pixel’s attention, unlike most of the other ‘Kickstarter’ style products that tend to pop up in the aisles. The brand appears to have a clear identity, a clear direction and solid intent from the off. Read on as Pixel Ed, Simon Skinner, digs for details with IRIX’s own Tim Graff

“The IRIX project was officially established a year ago and it connects industry specialists and photography enthusiasts from several European countries and also from South Korea”

Simon Skinner: Hi Tim. IRIX is a completely new brand in the UK market, can you please tell us a little about where the company came from, who is involved and the company’s intention? Tim Graff: The IRIX project was officially established a year ago and it connects industry specialists and photography enthusiasts from several European countries and also from South Korea. We created the TH Swiss AG company which is located in Switzerland. It is a natural centre for the European division of the IRIX project. It makes sense and makes for easier management in general. This location emphasizes the IRIX brand concept, which is to deliver a product that is not only well made and well designed, but also versatile, just like a Swiss pocket knife. SS: Can you tell us about the backgrounds of the team behind the Irix brand? TG: IRIX was born from the passion and experience of people who have been involved

in the photographic market for over 10 years. Our team consists of professional photographers, mechanical and optical engineers, product designers and other photography enthusiasts. We merged our qualifications, experience and knowledge to create something quite extraordinary. We derived our inspiration from our experiences and photographers’ needs. Nowadays it is very hard to find a well made lens, produced with such exceptional features at such a reasonable price. SS: What is it that separates IRIX products from ‘the rest’? TG: IRIX products are unique in the market because we pay a lot of attention to the details that count in photography, but not every lens manufacturer is aware of. Our goal is to make lenses, which are marked by four features: perfect image quality, solid build quality, maximum functionality, moreover though, unique and functional design. Things such as the weather sealed construction, double filter

IRIX

mounts and other patented solutions will prove a nice surprise for photographers everywhere. We believe that we have made photographic artists’ dreams come true. That is what makes us different from ‘the rest’. SS: What additions can we expect to see coming into the range in the coming months? TG: In addition to the fact that our two lenses

(11mm f/4.0 and 45mm f/1.4) will be released in the near future, we are also working on our own line of camera filters called “IRIX Edge”. This line will contain dedicated filter holders for rectangular glass filters, 150x150 and 150x170mm, as well as screw-in filters with all popular sizes and 30x30mm gelatin filters for the rear filter mount in IRIX lenses. We are really excited to break into the photographic market with them.

SS: Can we expect to see any IRIX Cine cameras in time? TG: As we’re at the beginning of activity with our company, we have just started out with photographic lenses. However, in the future, we plan to branch out with cinematographic lenses for sure. SS: Who should our readers speak to for supply in the UK retail sector? TG: Again, we are a new company on the market, so we are currently working on our sales network across the world, setting up deals with various distributors in different territories. We hope to complete formalities as soon as possible for the UK and will keep you aware of developments as they happen. SS: Anything else you’d like to add, Tim? TG: Yes, really just a message to your retailer/ photo enthusiast readers. If you have always dreamt about an accurate and intuitive lens with maximum functionality, we suggest you try out IRIX. We would love to share our experience with you and to offer you our innovative products. Pick yours and prepare for more! www.irixlens.com

RETAIL SOLUTIONS FOR THE PRINT PROFESSIONAL

FEATURING

NORITSU GETS ‘SMART’ During The Photography Show 2016, printing giant, Noritsu effectively re-emerged into the UK market with a new distributor, new technologies and the promise of a great deal more in the pipeline. Here, In:Print reports on the delivery of the first round of these developments as Noritsu announce their new ‘SMART’ range

For more information contact Derek Fieldhouse at PhotoXport on 0116 2675907

It’s not every day that a new printing system comes to market, and it was no surprise for us to see the buzz that surrounded the Noritsu stand during Photokina as the company unveiled their brand new printers, which can either be used as a low cost engine for desktop printing, for photo-finishing labs or can be slotted into a photo-kiosk set up. Noritsu Gets ‘Smart’ Continued...

Hero products in the range include the QSS Smart DR-08 Roll Simplex printer and the QSS Smart DR-012 Roll Simplex printer, with both solutions coming to market, targeting the photo retailer who is looking for new ways to make extra profit and also bring a lower cost per print to their business. Speaking with Ron Kubara, Noritsu’s Director of WorldWide Strategic Sales and Planning, he told In:Print: “The new system has been a long time coming and has been a project

that I’ve been very close to personally. It is the perfect system to augment existing retail print businesses, or to provide the building blocks for a start up photo-finishing business and I, for one, am very excited to see it finally coming to market.” One of the new QSS Smart printers’ USP’s has to be the unusually small footprint, with the 8” version (the DR-08) coming in at just 460x500mm and the 12” version (the DR-12) at 500mmx560mm.

Noritsu were the inventors of the Minilab with the QSS system back in the 1970`s and the new series from Noritsu comes loaded with a host of new and innovative technologies, including automatic mechanical adjustment. This basically means that a sensor within the head assembly provides information about the head position & paper surface. Smart image science then adjusts image-printing data to ensure the maximum quality print for each print speed. Cartridges The brand new printers from Noritsu include an innovative, ‘consumer style’ replaceable print cartridge head system, essentially giving a simple and user-friendly workflow for any user. Along with this and as explained to In:Print on the Noritsu stand during Photokina, the nozzles in the cartridges will clear themselves if left standing for a prolonged period of time, by heating and ‘blasting’ themselves clear. Thus saving on having to replace the entire cartridge, ultimately saving on costs. The DR-08 Roll Simplex printer offers a range of print sizes and similar print quality to current Noritsu inkjet printers: • Six ink printing using two print heads.

22 www.pixel.co.uk

in print

• Print resolution variable according to printing speed mode. • Roll print sizes include 4”, 5”, 6” and 8” by 78”. The more comprehensive option in the QSS Smart DR-012 Roll Simplex printer offers an even greater range of roll print sizes, adding 10” and an impressive 12” x 78’’. Economy & Quality Noritsu has developed a low cost, eco inkjet paper & dye ink, which offers a lower operating cost than current inkjet media and a lower running cost than current dye-sub media whilst offering quality, similar in print to current Noritsu Inkjet printers with a higher colour gamut, and colour depth than Agx & Dye sublimation.

It’s now open for any current or prospective Kodak Express owners to visit for hands on demos or product/ equipment overviews. It’s also a great space for Kodak Express members to discuss potential store layouts and ideas for POS before anything happens in their own shops. It’s in this space where the Tetenal team will discuss ideas, such as putting the inspirational high-ticket items on display to attract customers in store with the aim of increasing the value of each transaction. Tetenal have also created a unique Epson room, which houses the entire range of the latest SureColor Photo Hardware. This enables the team to show clients and potential clients how the individual machines can be integrated into an existing workflow, for most types of photo finishing businesses, whilst also demonstrating the quality and output of the machines. Something of a major development within Tetenal is the new working relationship with the

heavyweight print manufacturer, DNP. Tetenal have also introduced a brand new Creation Station Kiosk, which links to virtually any photolab in the market and offers a fully loaded gifting solution. Another space that’s been created in the Tetenal building is their fully functioning Studio Room. This has been developed to maximise the supplier’s relationship with SunBounce and SunSniper capture products together with their extensive backdrop range. Having seen the facilities that Tetenal have developed within their building of late, we would heartily recommend that customers, old and new, pay a visit to see these showrooms. It’s the perfect place to get hands-on with the entire product portfolio, not to mention to test and try different retail scenarios before implementing anything in store for ‘real’. So to elaborate on Tetenal’s fresh agreement to distribute DNP equipment, we asked Craig Bird, Marketing Manager at Tetenal Ltd about the relationship: “The situation we have now with DNP is the result of a relationship which has been in development for some time, but is now starting to show signs of development. We’re seeing the account moving in the right direction and we now have the addition of some DNP equipment in our hardware showroom.”

He told us: “We and the snappy tag-line, ‘Keeping Britain recently conducted some customer satisfaction Printing’, Tetenal Support Service marks surveys and the results were very interesting a major part of our new focus, which puts to us. We asked our customers a number of customer service at the heart of everything questions about what were the most important we do. The customer must have an excellent factors in choosing and retaining suppliers. Kodak Express network in the UK, we went Another key new member can be found on to ask Craig about how the chain has been in Tetenal’s support service team. Richard performing lately. He said: “We’re happy with

the current state of the Kodak Express network and we are continuing to add new stores to the group all the time. The Kodak Alaris equipment, in terms of kiosks and the APEX dry lab, is still perfectly suited to high street retail stores and our continuing development of the support we offer to the stores, in addition to the work that Kodak Alaris are doing through the Kodak Moments App, means that the Kodak name still has great resonance on the high street with consumers and therefore, still an attractive proposition for photo retailers. I think that the Kodak Alaris developed Apps are becoming more helpful in driving traffic into stores as they are constantly being updated by the technical team at Kodak Alaris. This simply means that the consumer gets the best customer experience possible with as many fulfillment options as possible and it’s constantly improving. What the App does is help keep the name Kodak synonymous with photographic printing and continues to bring that wealth of trust and experience to newer and younger demographics. All in all they’re proving to be a positive addition to the photo retail market.” All in all, it’s fair to say that Tetenal have surprised us. The visit was an incredible eyeopener and the strides that they have made as a company seem set to ensure their success for many a year to come. Perhaps more importantly, their development seems entirely designed to ensure the future success of their customers. Access to product as and when required is also key, so with a well stocked warehouse, Tetenal are able to make sure that their customers don’t have to wait for stock, making sure that the wheels keep turning and the lights stay on for photo dealers across the UK. Long may it continue.

ASDA Sells Photo Division to Photo-Me International Photo-Me’s Chief Executive, Serge Crasnianski stated: “This is an interesting opportunity to significantly expand our UK business in a strong set of locations and increase our market share in the digital photo printing market, which we believe has growth potential in the digital age.” Photo-Me currently trade in 17 countries and have (approx) 6,600 photobooths in the UK. Underlying pre-tax profit rose 15% to a record £40.1m last year. In:Print will be catching up with Photo-Me UK for the latest, so watch this space for an update in our November issue.

As Asda look to reduce the number of services they offer in store as a countrywide cost-cutting exercise, a deal has been struck with Photo-Me, who are taking over the 191 Asda in-store photo centres and 172 selfservice kiosks. In:Print recently learned that PhotoMe will also operate the supermarket’s online photo-processing service. It will pay an estimated £3.35m for the business and will also buy roughly £2m of existing stock. Photo-Me have said that they expect to grow sales in the division by installing improved equipment, refreshing layouts and introducing new products.
