Nikon Wins £9m in Sigma lawsuit Courts in Tokyo have ruled in favour of Nikon in a copyright infringement case against Sigma. As part of the resolution, Sigma must pay Nikon 1.5 billion Japanese yen, which equates to roughly £8.7million. The lawsuit, which Nikon filed in 2011, involved six Sigma lenses, which Nikon alleged were making use of its patented Vibration Reduction image stabilisation technology. Nikon was originally seeking compensation of closer to £70 million, and had said that communications with Sigma had not resulted in a satisfactory conclusion. The Judge in Chief stated that this patented invention of Nikon’s should be rewarded based on the contribution of the patent to the defendant’s products, that is 15%.

Calumet US Stores Close

Calumet’s US subsidiary closes retail doors under Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, but plans to return Calumet Photographic Inc., (an independent US company within the Calumet group), announced on 13th March 2014 that it has filed for Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Calumet had originally planned a restructuring Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The basis of this restructuring plan was an adaptation of the successful business model of Calumet operations in Europe and the United Kingdom. However, due to a cancellation by a local financial institution the planned restructuring

could not be executed. Calumet Photographic Inc. in the United States, and the companies in the Calumet group in Europe and UK are independent companies that are financially separate and operate independently. “The filing of Chapter 7 for Calumet in the United States has no direct impact on Calumet in Europe and the United Kingdom” Christof Bergmann, General Manager of Calumet, clearly expresses and also adds: “Right now we are developing plans for a return to the US Market with retail locations and an online presence”.

A Household Name CSCs’ popularity pushes them onto inflation calculation list Interchangeable Lens Cameras have been included in the list of products used to measure inflation due to their popularity and growth in proportion to the wider market. The Office for National Statistics identified interchangeable-lens cameras as a significant area of growth, and added them to the ‘basket’. It’s worth noting that in the last decade, only compact digital cameras have been included from the photography sector.

High Value, High Demand Western European consumers spent a total of almost €2.0 billion on photography in Q4 2013 according to figures released by GfK Whilst segments under strong pressure from smartphones are

losing out, high-value cameras are doing particularly well. In fact, top-quality camera sales increased substantially last year, depending on their target group and intended

David McCorquodale, Head of Retail at KPMG, comments “The basket of goods offers us an interesting window into the average British shopper. “Interchangeable lens digital cameras have been included in the basket for the first time, after storming ahead of the traditional compact camera. Consumers are technologically confident and are happy to switch from traditional products to new, innovative, technology if it offers them an enhanced, more convenient service.”

Cameras offering more features - for more money - holding their ground area of application. Advanced fixed-lens cameras, such as superzoom compacts and those with very large sensors were in high demand. In general, cameras became more connected and by the end of 2013, one in seven cameras sold was able to share pictures via an integrated WLAN.

THE INSIDER

Saying what you’re thinking and asking the difficult questions. Each week the Insider reports from the front line of our industry Well, what an interesting weekend I had at The Photography Show! If I’d gone expecting Focus 2.0 - and I’m not completely convinced I didn’t - I’d have been pleasantly surprised. That’s not to knock Focus, I thought it was a great show for students, enthusiasts and people entering the professional market in particular, but it had built up an arguable reputation for being a bit ‘anorak’-ish. The Photography Show was definitely not, with a glossy feel that was obviously a hit with enthusiasts, students, that hip audience we all know we need to target. That’s not to say it was entry-level, as the kit on offer, range of speakers and seminars and workshops were

Showtime!

Visitors arrived in their droves to get their hands on new kit, enjoy a range of activities, experience seminars and buy products from over 180 exhibiting brands. A variety of exhibitors were on-hand to help visitors explore the latest kit and get updates on the latest innovations. Susie Donaldson, Marketing Director, Canon UK & Ireland adds: ‘It was great to see the industry come together at The Photography Show. We wanted to bring photography to life for those visiting and we feel we achieved that with talks from our Canon ambassadors, supporting the Student Conference and the interactive elements of our stand. The show was a good opportunity for us to speak with people at all stages of their photography journey, from students wanting to take their

of a very high standard and obviously popular with pros too. It was just very accessible, more than a little ‘cool’... everything we need photography to be. I arrived a skeptic and left very impressed with what Future had achieved. Was it totally free of the problems that Focus dealt with? Not at all, I was still witness to people checking the eBay prices of newly released kit on their phones just metres from the stands... but in some cases, they’ll have been the exact same phones that got them started on photography in the first place, so the changing times of this industry may be paying off if the success of the show was anything to go by.

The inaugural Photography Show, opened its doors for the first time at Birmingham’s NEC in March

Trade Watch Pixel’s Lee Mansfield gives his expert view on The Photography Show

Three words for The Photography Show: busy, busy, busy! Joking aside, It was absolutely packed and that can be nothing but a good thing. Conversations that I’ve had with exhibitors, both at and after the show, have been completely positive, with both the format of the show itself and of course, the number of people it drew in were absolutely heaped with praise. An injection of consumer engagement like this can only be a great thing for retailers and manufacturers, and we’ll be bringing you more of their personal takes on the show as they gather their thoughts and get settled back in from such a busy and productive weekend at the NEC. It was great to see entry level and casual consumers getting engaged with photography, not just the dedicated enthusiasts. The more we can encourage their photography habits, the more they become potential customers for all of our businesses, not just those with a presence at the show.

next step to professional photographers. For us it was a great show and the feedback we’ve had is extremely positive.’ Adding to the visitor experience were icons and celebrities of the photography world including Rankin and Terry O’Neill who captivated audiences in the specially created 500-seat Super Stage. We spoke to Future in further depth about this in our Big Interview on page 14.

The Budget: What About Retailers?

The Chancellor’s budget, as usual, was a mixed bag. For retailers, it contained a number of welcome measures BRC Director General, Helen Dickinson distilled the key details of The Budget for retailers: “[Store owners] will welcome the Chancellor’s focus on putting more money in their pockets through changing the tax thresholds, fuel duty and savings and pensions arrangements. The BRC’s projections demonstrate that whilst recovery is now tangible, progress is still fragile and retail can play a strong role going forward.” “As an industry that employs over one million people under 25, we applaud the Chancellor’s measures to support 100,000 more apprenticeships and the scrapping of jobs tax for under-21s. “There are around two million women working in retail because our industry offers

flexibility as well as good career progression and so we are very pleased to see that more help with childcare costs will be available.” “The priority for our industry remains the reform of business rates so that we can make optimum use of physical space in a changing retail world. “British retailers in e-commerce already export more than £4 billion of goods to customers overseas. There is scope to increase that amount to around £28 billion per year by 2020 if the conditions are right. The Chancellor’s measures to extend the role for UKTI will be

warmly welcomed.” “Retail in the UK includes over 200,000 small businesses which welcome support for innovation and growth through the availability of annual seed funding. The whole retail industry will welcome the extension of the annual investment allowance. Economic activity in infrastructure, manufacturing and house-building is good for the broad economy, puts more people into work and brings positive benefits to the retail sector.”

Barking about ‘Petsies’ New photo market may have four legs and a waggy tail... Samsung marked its 21st year supporting Crufts and its sponsorship of the the Kennel Club’s ‘Dog Photographer of the Year’ competition with the help of reality star and dog lover Millie Mackintosh. Samsung’s stand at Crufts this year featured a ‘Petsie’ zone where visitors could take and share snaps of their four legged friends, based on the company’s recent findings about how popular these types of photos are. Almost two-thirds (63%) of pet-owners in the UK confess to taking photos of their pets on a regular basis, and a further 16% revealing that half of the photos they upload onto Facebook are of their pets. Such is the trend for taking ‘petsies,’ that they are now overtaking the human race in the upload stakes. Brits now share an average of six photos a week of their pets versus just five a week of their friends and family.

The ColorEdge CG277 is targeted at professionals in digital photography, prepress, video editing, post production, and other fields that require the most predictable colour in their workflow. It features a sensor that is housed inside the monitor and swings up onto the screen for self-calibration. The ColorEdge CX271 is ideal for professionals and prosumers in photography and design. It houses an internal correction sensor that maintains the

“The digital revolution kicked off in earnest with the launch of the Red One digital cinema camera in 2007, and the production market hasn’t looked back since. “For end users, digital cinema cameras have dramatically reduced the cost of shooting high-end content and have been embraced by most cameramen and DoPs, save a few traditionalists who remain loyal to film.

Photo Europe commented: “The cashback offer is an excellent opportunity for photographers that are looking to invest in colour management in order to get the best from their images. ColorMunki Display and i1Display Pro use similar technologies to provide unrivalled accuracy when measuring a screen’s colours. All claims must be received by the 14th August 2014 to qualify.

X-Rite Photo Europe is offering £30 cashback on every X-Rite ColorChecker Passport purchased at the same time as either X-Rite ColorMunki Display or X-Rite i1Display Pro. With a retail price of £83 the ColorChecker Passport can effectively be purchased for just £53. Geoffrey Clements, Managing Director at X-Rite

calibration results after the monitor has been calibrated with an external sensor. The ColorEdge CG277 and CX271 will be shipping in the UK from 1st April 2014.

“The digital revolution has caught up with rental and retail of broadcast equipment”, says Adam Cox, Futuresource Consulting

“The influx of new cameras, as well as the hype and demand surrounding them, means rental rates have to be dropped to ensure that the utilisation rate is kept as high as possible. “For mid-range digital cinema cameras, around 50% of total volumes sold enter the rental channel. For high-end digital cinema cameras this figure is much higher. Working closely and effectively with rental houses is

therefore important for the manufacturers. 4K is only likely to exacerbate the situation, as demand increases and more vendors look to capitalise on the new technology. 4K production is already well-established in high end production, though it is far from industry standard. However, this will change over the coming years, as demand for 4K permeates further down into the broadcast industry.

SPECIAL REPORT FOCUS

THE BIG INTERVIEW Pixel speaks to Cassandra Grant, Event Manager at Future Publishing, who organise The Photography Show, about the event everybody’s talking about

Thanks for making time for us, Cassandra. We really enjoyed The Photography show! What were the final ‘scores on the doors’? The show had a total attendance of over 30,000, subject to audit. We’re currently going through an audit of the numbers as we’d like to be able to be completely be transparent on who attended, but that’s the figure we have so far, and it doesn’t include exhibitors or visitors that attended on multiple days. Did the attendees seem to be the demographic you were aiming for, on the whole? We were happy to see a good representation across our visitors, from pros and enthusiasts to a diverse age group of visitors. Certainly our access to advertising vehicles such as Mollie Makes, techradar and T3 helped us extend the consumer demographic. What were the biggest challenges for you as organisers? Getting the right balance between the pro and consumer audience is important to us and something we will continue to refine so that we can be sure all our exhibitors are meeting enough of their target market. Also, launching a show of this scale in just 9 months was quite a challenging timescale! We’re very pleased with what we achieved, but we’re all looking forward to having the benefit of a full 12 months this time.

Credits & Contacts

What sort of feedback have you had from exhibitors? It’s been hugely positive, and we’re in the process of talking to exhibitors to get their feedback on things we can improve on. Certainly, the introduction of interactive features such as the live stage and quality conference content was well received. We presume you’ll be back next year. What will you be doing to improve the show further? Most definitely, we’ll be back at the NEC from 21-24 March 2015! We’re delighted that over 85% of space has already been booked so we hope to be able to grow both the number of exhibitors and visitors attending the show. We’re moving to hall 5 for 2015 which is a bigger space and easier to navigate. Over the next few months we’ll be developing some of the feature areas we had this year and introducing some new ones. The response to the interactivity on show floor was overwhelmingly positive. The IGPOTY Garden,

the Catwalk and Live Stage gave visitors an opportunity to get hands-on and to pick up tips and advice and we’d like to continue this for the next event. How do you feel the event stood apart from Focus, its predecessor? Focus had a great legacy but The Photography Show is a brand new event and we wanted to bring our own ideas. Focus was successful for 24 years and if we can be around for as long we would consider that a huge achievement. How will you make sure you continue to stay on the ball with imaging trends? We are lucky to have our Future editorial team and as with this year, we will work closely with our partners, exhibitors and visitors to ensure we stay in tune with the trends and challenges affecting the industry. Survey research is already underway for feedback on this year’s event. Showcasing products and putting on education and demos that reflect what the world of imaging has to offer is what The Photography Show is all about.
