Lytro Illum

Let’s cut straight to the chase and introduce our number one spot: Lytro Illum, the camera that dares to change the rules. Seven years in the making, the Illum is Lytro’s first ‘real’ camera. The first one was made as a prototype to prove that light-field photography was actually a valid technology. Unlike practically every other camera that exists, a light-field camera doesn’t just video

Photographic retailers over the years have lost business with the advent of mobile phones and tablets, so we feel that with this technology, photographic retailers can be at the forefront of a new aspect of photography.” This is one of the biggest advancements in imaging technology for many years and if Lytro can convince the pro user that their products offer major steps in capability and post edit production, it is certain to filter through and create demand as they introduce further products in the coming months. This is certainly one to watch. Continued on page 18

process light on a single plane – it captures the direction light moves and the distance between objects, essentially rendering a 3D scene. This enables photographers to refocus their photographs after they have been taken, and to subtly shift perspective on any image. It arms photographs with the tools to capture greater depth than ever before, lending the nickname ‘living pictures’. Jane Nicholson, Marketing Manager at Intro 2020 – the official UK distributor of the Lytro Illum, said: “We feel that Light Field technology will form a major part of the future of photography. -

News

Welcome To Pixel Magazine It’s been a big month for the imaging industry, with an awful lot of product launching, trend-setting, market analysing and beer swigging going on across the channel at photokina. I think we can all agree that photography is IN, not just in niche circles, not just as a hobby, interest or a profession, but as a lifestyle. We all take photographs; most people who do so aren’t even interested in cameras or technology - they just enjoy the end product, the process of capturing a part of their lives and sharing it with others. But as photography opens up to mass channels and new markets, it seems more and more consumers – who perhaps never even thought of photography as an interest before, are starting to think about upgrading. They want to stand out from the crowd, take better quality images and do more exciting things with them. According to Christoph Thomas, President of the photographic industry association: “photokina

2014 has impressively illustrated that nowadays there is scarcely any walk of life in which visual information and communication does not play a significant role. All companies have demonstrated with new and fresh ideas, innovative products and fascinating technical developments that the photographic and imaging industry has its finger on the contemporary pulse and is in fine fettle for the future.” Whether the future lies in wearables, all-weather cams, smart photography, mirrorless compacts, or a technology we can’t even comprehend yet, the only thing that matters for retailers now is that there is a future - and if it’s a lucrative future then who’s complaining? Zoe, Editor zoe@pixel.co.uk

Photokina Focuses on the Future Pixel’s Editorial Consultant Damien Demolder comments on this year’s trade show There is nothing quite like photokina, and although this was my 8th (yes, I know, I’m still new) it was as exciting as ever. There are always common themes to be observed, and this year it was about a maturity in the market and a consolidation of quality and value. It may not suit everyone, but the consumption of the lowend compact by the smarterthan-cameras smartphone has left photo brands with time to produce the cameras that we’ve wanted for years. Compacts with large sensors, that cost proper money and which concentrate on adding value rather than volume to the market, are very welcome, as is the new wave of highquality compact system cameras

and top-end lenses – just what’s required to tempt and nourish DSLR users with money to spend. The emergence of 4K video is also having a positive impact, perhaps stimulating stills photographers to give movies a go, but importantly also bringing videographers into traditional camera stores for bodies, lenses, accessories. Photokina saw some good development in 4K-enabled bodies, and helped present the idea that 4K (and 6K) video is good enough to lift stills from – even incamera. The show had a positive feel for me, as though we are once again looking forward at what we can do, rather than looking back at what once was and what has been lost.

Growing Category: Compact Systems Cameras Analysts at GfK claim CSC market is growing The photo market has gone through tough times in the last year. Compact system cameras (CSC) have suffered too, especially in 2013 with a 31% value decline compared to 2012. Nevertheless, in the past year we have seen CSCs enjoying growth again (+14% JanAug 14 vs same period the year before). On one hand, this market improvement is helped by: • High promotions/price cuts in the entry level segments. CSC with an average selling price below £300 have enjoyed +26% value growth year to date compared to 2013. • Launches of new, higher end, CSC models at the end of 2013

and the beginning of 2014. CSCs with an average selling price above £800 have reached new heights with +94% value growth between January 2014 and August 2014, compared to the same period in 2013. On the other hand, the middle range CSCs (£300 £800) keep suffering and are declining by -21% in 2014 compared to 2013. Looking ahead, we can expect entry level products being driven by promotional activities and price cuts, whilst higher end products will have a harder time from the end of the year when they will be compared with new product. Pentax 645Z Firmware Update Ricoh Imaging has released new firmware for the Pentax 645Z medium format camera. Firmware version 1.10 renders the camera compatible with the newest version of the IMAGE Transmitter software package. This enables the camera to be controlled when connected to a computer via a USB cable, so images can be saved straight from the camera

into a chosen folder as they are being taken. The software also allows photographers to adjust settings such as ISO, exposure, shutter-speed and aperture – providing an alternative to the wireless transfer enabled by the LAN-function FLU SD cards the camera is compatible with. RRP: £199

Despite being a profitable business with profits of £105m, Phones 4U has been forced into administration after losing two major contracts: Vodafone and EE. The firm has claimed EE’s move was ‘a complete shock’. “If mobile network operators decline to supply us, we do not have a business,” said Phones 4U boss David Kassler. Mr Kassler said it was a “very sad day” for both customers and staff.

BBC Business Editor Kamal Ahmed wrote: “The collapse of Phones 4U is about much more than the demise of a high street chain that sells mobile phones… According to the profitable retailer, it is actually about a reduction in competition. Mobile contracts for consumers will now - even more - be dominated by the mobile operators themselves direct selling to customers.”

Dixons Carphone is now the only major place where customers can go to compare prices between operators. According to Alistair Davies, an analyst at Investec, Dixons Carphone could benefit from the collapse of Phones 4U to the tune of £225m per year.

Samsung creates ‘completely new Compact System Camera’

The new Samsung NX1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera aimed at experts According to Samsung, the new NX1 will go head-to-head with professional system DSLRs in terms of image quality, despite being much smaller and lighter. The brand new APS-C format CMOS sensor offers the highest resolution yet for this kind of camera, and its back-lit sensor enables the photodiodes to capture more light. This means it can deliver high image quality even in low light at the upper end of its ISO 100-25,600 range. Myoung Sup Han, Executive Vice President and Head of Imaging at Samsung, said: “The NX1 represents the pinnacle of Samsung’s advanced photographic expertise and heralds a new era of intuitive,

premium quality photography for all photographers. “With the launch of the NX1, Samsung is re-defining what is possible with a compact system camera, allowing photographers everywhere to achieve previously unimaginable levels of quality in each and every image they capture.” The camera also houses a brand new DRiMe V Image Processor, designed to achieve superior

imaging speed that ‘serious photographers need’. To help with capturing fast-moving subjects, the NX1 has Wide Phase Detection which allows the camera to track subjects across the frame, and Samsung Auto Shot, which predicts the right time to capture a shot. 1/8000 second shutter speed and 15FPS continuous shooting also helps with particularly action-packed scenes. Optional Accessories New 50-150mm S ED OIS telephoto lens. With its ultra-fast F2.8 maximum aperture and 35mm equivalent 77-231mm focal range, this multipurpose lens is suited to a wide range of scenarios including sport, wildlife and portrait photography.

Ricoh Launches ‘Industrial-Strength’ G800 The new G800 digital camera is designed to withstand the harshest working environments Construction sites, disaster relief areas and war zones are no match for the new Ricoh G800 (successor to the G700 launched in 2010), which can be used at depths of up to 5m (for up to 2 hours) and withstand drops of up to 2m in tests conducted according to American military standards. Featuring a back-illuminated, 16-million pixel CMOS image sensor makes it suitable for use in low light conditions, it can record detailed photographs and Full HD

movies even in poorly-lit working environments. The new G800 features improved password protection. Protection that could formerly be applied to only one function at a time (for example, to restrict access to internal memory) now can be applied to multiple camera functions. Ricoh has added support

for separate administrator and user passwords, so that in addition to preventing onsite handling errors and unauthorised viewing of photographs, security settings can be fine-tuned separately for administrators and on-site workers according to how each uses the device. And the Ricoh G800 can be used

in even more working environments than its predecessor—not only in outdoor situations such as during disaster relief, but on construction sites as well as medical and production facilities that require equipment that can be washed and disinfected. Supplied accessories include a rechargeable battery, battery charger, USB cable, and neck strap. RRP: £599.99. UK availability: October 2014.

Sony Takes Smartphone Photography to a New Level Will the new QX1 and QX30 smart lenses gain traction for the Christmas period?

T

his month Sony reported an expected full-year loss of 230bn yen (£1.3bn), marking the company’s fifth net loss in six years. The loss, which is almost four times the £280m predicted earlier this year, has been attributed to Sony’s struggling mobile division – now set to be cut down and streamlined with focus on premium devices. Innovation in new products is now paramount for Sony – as Akira Amari, Japan’s economy minister and former Sony employee said in a recent press conference: “Sony should never forget about the spirit of the founder, which means that it is always from Sony that innovation comes, and is dispatched to the world. So for Sony, innovation is the raison d’être, you should never forget that.” One innovation in recent years has been the smart lens: a high quality lens that clips to the front of your smartphone and connects via WiFi or NFC. In September, Sony launched a successor to its QX series of smart lenses, this time giving it a 20.1mp APS-C Exmor sensor - putting it on par with DSLR cameras. The new QX1 is also compatible with a range of interchangeable lenses – enabling smartphones to take higher quality images than ever before. We recently spoke to Sony’s New Business Product Manager Simona Gaia Bara to find out whether smart lenses really are the next Big Thing in smartphone innovation. “Sony’s first smart lenses, the QX10 and QX100 did well in the UK, especially as Christmas gifts. We found this was a key line for

“This technology is something that has not been thought of before, so they are certainly curious – it is always great to see new innovation in the market.” the company during Christmas period last year. In fact, the lens style cameras have been one of our strongest lines for the last few months – they are selling as well as one of our DSLR cameras.” Sony hopes the new QX1 and QX30 will expand on this success, offering greater quality, greater zoom and, for the first time yet, the ability to attach other lenses. The QX1 is compatible with Sony’s growing range of E-mount lenses, potentially attracting customers who already own a collection. The QX30 has 30x optical zoom aided by Sony’s Optical SteadyShot technology. Clear Image Zoom even allows users to digitally magnify images to 60x without

sacrificing pixel count. According to Simona, these higher end products will drive down the price of their predecessors. “The QX10 will be cheaper than the QX1 and QX30 – we have the variation colours in pink and copper too for the QX10 this year, offering even more of an incentive to buy it. “There has been a lot of positive feedback from retailers on the QX1,” she added. “This technology is something that has not been thought of before, so they are certainly curious – it is always great to see new innovation in the market.” So what can retailers and counter staff do to sell the QX10 and QX30? According to Simona, Christmas is a key opportunity for this product. “With the QX30 and colour variants of the QX10 – they are definitely fantastic Christmas

gifts initially for general smartphone users but beyond that, they are a fantastic piece of kit for all with an interest in photography, it has a wide audience,” she said. “With the entire QX range, especially the QX1, it is important to demo it as much as possible to show shoppers just how easy these devices are to use and how easy it is to share images. It is really important to get customers to see how they work and to really look at quality of pictures you can take.” It is also a great opportunity to stock compatible accessories alongside the product to boost profits, and also to show customers the Sony E-mount range to make them aware of all the shooting options available. Simona added: “The cases are great. We are also launching the free-shooting kit – enabling photographers to shoot from many different angles.” QX1 Top Selling Points • 20.1mp APS-C type Exmor CMOS sensor DSLR quality • Compatible with E-mount lenses for a variety of shooting styles • Bionz X processing machine to reduce blur • Built-in flash • Manual control for creativity • NFC and WiFi for instant connection with smartphone • Instantly view, share and edit images on smartphone screen • Simple set up with PlayMemories mobile app • Compatible with both Android and iOS RRP: £249 QX30 Top Selling Points • 30x optical zoom • Sony G lens • Optical SteadyShot • Lock-on AS

‘Come And See’: The Plan Behind Canon’s New Campaign Canon has launched its biggest consumer advertising campaign yet - but will it really help retailers sell more cameras? In this exclusive interview, we talk to Canon’s Consumer Imaging Marketing Communications Director Nigel Taylor to discover more about ‘Come and See’

“There are now

more images being taken across the world than ever before, and each one tells its own story”

14 www.pixel.co.uk

C

ome and See is our way of creating an invitational message enticing people into the Canon brand,” Nigel enthused. “There are now more images being taken across the world than ever before, and each one tells its own story. We want to encourage people to share these stories by becoming part of the Canon world, improving their skills and ultimately taking better images.” To achieve this, Canon has launched a threeyear communications strategy involving a TV ad, social media marketing and a far-reaching outdoor campaign. Currently the campaign centres around two ‘stories’ shot with the Canon EOS C500 and EOS C300. One showcases a Calcio Storico match, an ‘historic football game’ that takes place around the ancient streets of Florence. The second tells the bizarre story of a herd of deer that routinely stops to graze on residential gardens around Epping Forest when night falls. Through these short films, produced and directed by Jonathan Glazer (the man behind

the famous Guinness Surfer Spot ad), Canon is attempting to reinforce an ideology behind its name: the idea that anybody can create a story just as original and enthralling as Glazer’s, as long as they use a Canon camera. It’s a classic advertising technique and one used by most bigname brands – but this time, there is a twist. Consolidating the TV ad and banner campaign is a brand new website: a digital portal designed for consumers who want to find out more about Canon products and how to use them in real-life situations to capture their own ‘stories’. This includes a series of ‘how-to’ product videos created by travel photographer Christopher Pillitz and wildlife photographer Jamie Hall, providing tips on how to make the most of Canon equipment. According to Nigel, the campaign provides an apt opportunity for retailers to push their Canon products. He said: “From a trade perspective, the new campaign will help drive sales and build up the Canon brand. We are keen to support the retailers in driving demand. It is all about

inviting shoppers to come inside, handle the products and learn more about what they can do. Essentially, we want to help staff become ambassadors for Canon.” This is where the website proves useful for counter staff: it includes profiles on Canon’s latest products such as the new EOS 7D Mark II and Powershot G7 X, applying tips to real life and helping retailers target the right audience and understand the purpose and USP of each product. “The objective is not only to help retailers sell more, but to help them feel like part of the Canon family,” Nigel added.

The TV advert aired for the first time on September 15th. You can find out more about the campaign by visiting the dedicated website https://comeandsee. canon-europe.com/en-GB/

Top Launches From photokina

We’ve whittled down 1,074 exhibitors to identify our top 10 launches from the biggest imaging trade show in the world. In this countdown we explain our choices, with commentary from Hungry Eye editor Simon Skinner

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Five years after it launched its top-of-therange APS-C format 7D, Canon has unveiled a successor - the 7D Mark II. With 10fps continuous shooting – 2fps faster than its predecessor, and a higher resolution sensor and more sophisticated autofocus system (with 65 AF points compared to 19), Canon fans will be itching to get their fingers on the new 7D Mark II. At photokina the new camera was showcased in an open, interactive stand featuring an EOS 7D Mark II speed shooting challenge, hands-on demonstrations and live sessions from world famous photographers. The camera embodies a number of ‘firsts’ for Canon, including the 65-point AF system – more points even than the EOS-1DX, Canon’s flagship full frame professional DSLR. It has also had a sensor update with 20.2MP compared to the original 7D’s 18mp, as well as a much higher ISO maximum, up from ISO 6400 to ISO 16,000. Simon says: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it - so the saying goes. Possibly one of the most highly anticipated launches of photokina was the 7D Mark II. The 7D has proved itself time and again and remains one of the longest standing models in the Canon lineup. This version of what has become a classic camera, will surely bring customers in-store for upgrades such as the 20.2

megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 6 processors and a 65-point cross-type AF system, capturing images at a blistering speed of 10fps. The 7D Mark II also promises cinematic-style Full HD 1080p recording at 50 or 60fps with dual card slots, GPS, a 3.0” LCD screen and an optical viewfinder with 100% coverage.” It may have taken five years to come up with a successor, but there’s no doubt Canon has excelled with the EOS 7D Mark II - and customers will surely be queuing up to get their hands on one.

RRP: £1,600

Samsung is trying to attract the attention of the enthusiast photographer with its new compact system DSLR-style NX1. It certainly has some impressive features, including the first backilluminated sensor with 28 million pixels - large for this type of camera. This is accompanied by a brand new image processing engine which Samsung claims is 2.8x faster than the previous version, facilitating a continuous shooting rate of 15 frames per second. The camera also boasts 4K video recording, a sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 and a new autofocus system called NX AF System III, which has 205 phase detection AF points and 209 contrast detection points. The NX1 has a 3 inch 1,036,000 dot super AMOLED tillable touch screen and an OLED electronic viewfinder. Of course,

Top 10 true to Samsung’s routes the NX1 has WiFi connectivity and NFC for easy image sharing between devices. Simon says: “After years in development, Samsung has announced what could be the jewel in the NX range crown. 4K has been a huge buzzword in the motion picture arena for some time now and as they progress to 6 and even 8K, 4K capability seems to being adopted by the photographic channel as the new ‘megapixel’ (in a sales sense at least). Here though, we’ve seen a real gem, a great camera that should command lots of attention and sales in the coming months. The NX1 a serious option in the photo hardware line up for the tail end of 2014.”

Fujifilm X100T

RRP: £1,299

Nikon D750

This mid-priced full frame DSLR boasts the same processor as that found in the higher-end D810 making this a sure hit with enthusiasts. It has a 24.3mp sensor – similar to the D610 – but expands the ISO beyond the D610’s limits at 100-12,800 ISO expandable to 51,200. It also shoots Full HD at 1080p and has a new tilting 1,229K 3.2 inch LCD display. Simon says: “The incredibly successful advertising campaign continues with the statement ‘I Am: Full Frame Freedom’ and who are we to argue with that? The D750 comes in above the D610 and below the D810 in the current range and is the first FX model ever produced with a tilting LCD monitor at the rear. “We’re promised a cinematic shooting experience with the D750 and the message appears to be that the unit has been launched with moving image in mind as much as stills shooting. With the D810 having been launched earlier in the year, this should be a model that keeps customers salivating into the New Year.”

RRP: £1,799

Earlier this year Fujifilm celebrated its 80th anniversary by adopting a new corporate slogan: ‘Value from innovation’. Since then it has fulfilled its promise to innovate with its latest lineup of X-series cameras. These were unveiled at photokina by a series of ambassadors nicknamed ‘X-photographers’. The X100T in particular caught our eye thanks to its impressive portfolio of new technologies. For instance, it has the world’s first electronic rangefinder and a new electronic shutter with speeds of 1/32000 sec. The new electronic rangefinder enables highly accurate manual focusing in real time, while the manual dials offer a classic photography experience – helped along by Fuji’s new film simulation mode Classic Chrome. Simon says: “Fujifilm has hit a home run with its X-series. The retro styling, small format and excellent image capability has won the brand many new fans, whilst retaining Fujifilm users of old. This new CSC camera from Fujifilm is a premium compact digital camera equipped with the world’s first electronic rangefinder, an APS-C size X-Trans CMOS II sensor, highspeed EXR Processor II image processing engine and a FUJINON 23mm F2 lens. Get this camera in your window - NOW.”

Photokina 2014 in Figures: • 1,074 companies from 51 countries participated • 68% of exhibitors came from overseas • 236 exhibitors and 109 additionally represented firms were from Germany • 516 exhibitors and 213 additionally • represented firms came from abroad • Including the estimates for the last day of the fair, around 185,000 visitors from more than 160 countries came to photokina 2014.

Epson Surelab D7 Studio

The new Epson Surelab D7 presents a great opportunity for copy shops, venues and retailers who need to print on a range of print format media. This microlab includes an order terminal and up to two printers. Users can add up to six additional D700 printers arranged in pairs inside each module. It can be used as a self-service system on the shop floor or behind the counter as a microlab used for producing larger print runs. Simon says: “Since the Surelab D3000 was launched by Epson last year, we have remained convinced that there would be more to follow. Here then is our answer; an adaptable, scaleable, modular, flexible machine that

Top 10 provides quality prints with sensible margin. “The SureLab D7 has been designed to create opportunity for imaging businesses, the studio can produce premium quality prints, panoramics, folded displays and cards, on a wide range of media, including paper-based matte, glossy and lustre media, and in a range of sizes (from 4inches up to A4 wide and from 3.5- 39 inches long). It also supports a wide range of inputs, [memory cards, USB, CD/ DVD, Bluetooth, Facebook and smartphones/ tablets].” It’s this diversity of output that makes the Surelab D7 so appealing – and the fact that it’s a scalable system that can grow with your business. It has a service interval of 100,000 prints with permanent parts to minimise service, plus a long-lasting blade that is low maintenance, which helps reduce downtime and save time and money for the retailer.

This is the new Type 007, a small medium-format camera built for professionals, and it features a MAESTRO II image processor made by FSEU. In other words: this is a serious bit of kit. Alongside its powerful processor, the 007 houses a 37.5mp CMOS sensor that can read 13 stops of dynamic range. It also features an ISO range of 100 to 6,400, making it versatile in a range of lighting conditions. WD My Passport

RED Dragon Sensor

It was a debut for RED at photokina this year, but this newcomer certainly didn’t disappoint with its revolutionary DRAGON sensor ‘blurring the line between motion and still cameras’. With a 6K sensor (translating to over 19 MP), photographers can capture 9x more pixels than HD. The idea is that it acts both as a motion camera and a DSLR-quality camera, where stills can be extracted from footage. There is also a ‘build your own camera’ quality about the RED DRAGON, enabling photographers to use all existing accessories, rail components and modules with the new sensor. Red’s move into the world of stills could

filmmakers as well as photographers. It may be a hefty camera, weighting in at 120g, but it’s a weight that’s justified with its full-metal chassis in die-cast aluminium, magnesium alloy top deck and baseplate in fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate. And breathe. It also boasts built-in GPS and integrated WLAN for use with smart devices. This is a camera packed with impressive specs, and it’s bound to be on every serious photographer’s wish-list when it comes out next year.

to meet this demand, which is why we think Western Digital’s new My Passport Wireless deserves a spot in our top 10 photokina launches. WD’s My Passport enables wireless transfer of data from up to eight devices – regardless of type and operating system –simultaneously. It also has a touch syncing function with Dropbox, Onedrive and Google Drive for extra backup security, while the battery lasts for eight hours, with a standby life of 20 hours on a single charge. Why should photographic retailers be interested? Firstly, there’s the obvious fact that this product will appeal to photographers. It has an SD card slot, enabling users to backup photos while out in the field - and then share them online using a smartphone, tablet or computer connected to the drive. Secondly, it has a streaming function enabling users to stream videos, photos and music to connected TVs, media players and gaming consoles making this a versatile, ‘all-rounder’ product with a wide potential market.

New Fish-Eye Lens from Samyang

‘4K Photo’ Firmware Update on LUMIX GH4

Samyang has announced the launch of the 12mm 1:2:8 ED AS NCS FIsh-Eye lens

The new lens is the Korean brand’s widest 35mm film format lens to date, and has been described as one of the ‘most advanced’ fish-eye lenses available. It consists of 12 elements arranged in eight groups, including three made of low dispersion ED glass, and two aspherical elements designed to minimise chromatic aberration.

This will be Samyang’s third lens to feature nanocrystal and anti-reflection NSC coating applied together with UMC, first seen on the 10mm f/2.8 and then the 12mm f/2.0. These coatings allow for the fast aperture of f/2.8, making

this lens ideal for shooting in diverse lighting conditions. It is as yet early days, and a release date and RRP have yet to be announced. The official distributer of Samyang lenses in the UK is Intro2020.

High Quality ‘Portrait’ Lens from Zeiss

Photokina will act as a Springboard for the new ‘world class’ Otus 1.4/85 lens from ZEISS The newest member of ZEISS’ Otus family adds a new, shorter focal length to the photographer’s portfolio. With a slightly longer focal length than ‘normal lenses’, the new Otus is targeted as an ‘allrounder’ for fashion, advertising, product and architectural photographers. Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses, said:“When we launched the Otus 1.4/55, our customers immediately understood the benefits they can get from such a lens: using their high-end full-frame

camera, they can shoot pictures with a quality and look they were previously only used to getting from expensive mediumformat systems. “With the Otus 1.4/85 we are now bringing out the second lens with this promise. Again with the Otus 1.4/85 we can say that this is a lens without any compromise on image quality. Contrast and resolution power are at the maximum level; there are no chromatic aberrations, even in the most challenging light situations; and there’s no distortion, ghosting or flare. And all of this

at any aperture. When you use an Otus lens, you can focus on the composition of your images. You don’t need to spend any time thinking about whether the technology could possibly be a limiting factor.”‚Ä® ZEISS will also be releasing UV and POL filters with a diameter of 86mm to be used with the Otus. ‘Best Consumer Magazine’ N-Photo Reveals What it Means to Win a Pixel Award We spoke to Chris George, Editor in Chief of N-Photo, winner of Consumer Magazine of the Year at last year’s Pixel Awards for the second year running What did it mean to N-Photo to win Consumer Magazine of the Year of 2013? We were absolutely delighted for N-Photo to win – and particularly as we have now won the Magazine of the Year title at the Pixel Awards for two years in a row. Not bad for a magazine that had only been going for two years! Why do you think you won? What makes N-Photo stand out from its competitors? We think N-Photo is a very special magazine – designed for the significant number of photo enthusiasts that use Nikon gear. N-Photo might look like a specialist magazine, but the advantage of our Nikon-centric approach is that we can tailor our content far better in terms of our accessory testing and our step-by-step shooting tutorials. It also appeals to the tribal nature of SLR photographers. The formula has been a great success, and the monthly magazine now has an audited circulation of 30,696 – outselling many of the established

titles on the UK newsstands. The awards are chosen and judged by your industry peers. Does that make winning the award even more special? N-Photo has won a number of awards from the magazine industry, but what makes the Pixel Trade Awards is that it is our readers and the photographic industry that gets to vote, and it is their opinion that really counts. What has been your top news story of 2014 within the photographic & imaging industry? Increasing our ABC figure was our big news story for 2014 – helping to prove that N-Photo had really arrived, and was a serious contender. How do you rate your chances

for winning again in 2014? We’d love to win the Award for a third year in a row. But we are not taking anything for granted, and are continuing to innovate on N-Photo. We have just recruited Michael Freeman as a major contributor, which we are really excited about. What was your highlight of the awards night? My highlight of the Awards night was being bought a drink by Jim Mackay, though not sure I really needed another glass of wine by that point in proceedings and it was also lovely to see Alan Jessop for the first time in years. This year the Consumer Magazine of the Year Award will be voted for only on Twitter. From our shortlist the magazine that receives the most retweets via @PixelMagazine will win the award.

Curved Eyelighter For Natural-Looking Reflections Westcott has released a curved Eyelighter that mirrors the curvature of the human eye The Westcott Eyelighter is the perfect solution for high contrast reflective lighting. While flat reflectors create unflattering catchlights in the eyes on closeup portraits, the Eyelighter has perfected the light by shaping a reflector in the same curvature as the human eye. Specifically designed for beauty and portrait

photography, The Eyelighter reflects an arched light toward your subject, leaving a catchlight that follows the natural curve of the iris. Unlike triflectors, this catchlight is seamless, without unflattering gaps. This innovative tool not only

provides pristine catchlights, but also reflects a stunning, clamshell lighting. The Eyelighter frame is constructed with a strong aluminum allowing for lightweight durability. In true

The new PowerShot G7X from Canon for ‘serious photographers’

The new Canon PowerShot G7 X has a 1.0-type back-illuminated 20.2mp CMOS sensor and a f/1.8-2.8, 4.2x ultra-wide angle lens packed into a compact metal body. A number of high-end features allow photographers to get creative with their image capturing. For example, the nine-blade aperture enables photographers to create an artistic background blur, while the sensor helps capture images with low noise even at ISO 12800. Canon claims the DIGIC 6 is its most powerful image processor yet, helping users capture high-speed situations with minimal blur.

According to Canon, the G7 X ‘offers a photographic experience comparable to that of the company’s DSLRs’. The key to simulating the ‘professional experience’ is control and customisability. A lens control ring gives the photographer full manual control, while Touch AF allows auto focus with a single touch to the tillable touch screen.

The G7 X is also being marketed as the ideal companion for budding filmmakers. Manual Movie allows a range of setting to be adjusted during filming, again giving the user heightened creative control.
