SBTLocal News Paxton Named One of the Best Places to Work – Again! Paxton is one of the best companies to work for in the UK – it’s official. The Brighton-based technology company ranks 91 in The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For 2019 list, announced at an awards ceremony last night. It’s the second year running it has made it onto the high-profile list. Paxton, which designs and manufactures security systems, was the only East Sussex company and the only security manufacturer in the UK to appear. The ranking was based on glowing feedback from staff, who rated Paxton highly in areas including leadership, team culture and giving something back. Adam Stroud, Paxton’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re so happy to be in the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For list for the second year running. This is a huge achievement and we’re incredibly proud. It’s the people that make Paxton such a fantastic place to work and they are the reason for our continued success. “With teams in 12 locations across the

world, it’s important to foster a sense of community - but key to that is staff wellbeing and engagement. “We always listen to our staff and, thanks to their feedback, have been able to introduce a whole host of initiatives to help them thrive. This not only allows our teams to reach their full potential, it also means we can attract the best and brightest talent. “But while we’re delighted to again be recognised as one of the best companies to work for, we’ll always ask our staff if we can do better and will be introducing more initiatives in the year ahead. We’re excited about the future and becoming an even better place to work.” The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For list is compiled using feedback from staff surveys, conducted independently by Best Companies. Paxton’s survey highlights included: • 94% agree the company encourages charitable events • 92% of staff believe they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the company • 87% feel proud to work for Paxton requirements in tax legislation where VAT is concerned. Almost all VAT registered businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) will need to maintain digital records, for VAT purposes from the changeover date. They will also need to provide their VAT information to HMRC by using third party commercial software.

Businesses have just a few weeks left to prepare for Making Tax Digital. Sussex-based chartered accountants, MHA Carpenter Box, is reminding business clients that the deadline is rapidly approaching. The migration to digital is happening because from April 1, 2019 paper records will cease to meet the legal

Paxton was founded in Lewes in 1985 and has seen a rapid expansion in recent years. Employing over 300 people globally, it develops all products at its state-of-the-art technology centre, in Home Farm Road, just off the Lewes Road, Brighton, manufactures all products at its factory in Eastbourne and exports to more than 60 countries globally.

VAT registered businesses with a turnover below £85,000 will not have to use the new system until April 2020, at which time the Government expects to widen the scope of MTD to both Income Tax and Corporation Tax. requirements have until 1 October 2019 as HMRC believe they may need more time to test the system. Public sector entities required to provide additional information on their VAT return (e.g. Government departments and NHS Trusts, and traders based overseas) also have until 1 October 2019 to comply with the new MTD requirements. Stuart Noakes, Partner and Head of Tax at MHA Carpenter Box, said: “Once bedded in, MTD should make it easier for businesses to get their tax right and keep on top of their tax affairs. However, we know that some businesses will be daunted in the move away from the paper systems they have managed with for many years. We can certainly help them to find a cloud solution, submit quarterly returns to HMRC and we even provide training to ensure that they remain compliant.”

SBTLocal News West Sussex Celebrates Year Of Strong Growth For New Business equates to 3.4% growth. The statistics come from the Inform Direct Review of UK Company Formationsusing data from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics. Mid Sussex formed the most new businesses (1,242), followed by Horsham (959) and Chichester (894).

Figures just published show that West Sussex saw strong growth in the number of new company formations during 2018 – despite the challenges of political and economic uncertainty surrounding Brexit. In terms of new companies, 6,048 were registered in the county compared to 5,598 in 2017, which represents an increase of 8.0%. This brings the total number of registered companies in West Sussex to 51,556, up from 49,845 at the end of 2017, which

John Korchak, Director of Operations at Inform Direct said: “These figures demonstrate strong growth for new company formations in West Sussex, an 8% increase on 2017. It presents a very positive picture for business against a background of political and economic uncertainty and shows that the county continues to provide a supportive environment, both for new business ventures and existing enterprises. “This achievement is replicated in a number of counties and in the UK as a whole which has seen a new record total of registered companies.” Across the UK as a whole, a record number of new companies were formed -

Design Brighton Festival announces April 2020 dates

Design Brighton, a four-day festival celebrating revolutionary urban design, has announced new dates of 1-4 April 2020. Festival Co-Director Sophie Law Smith explains: “Our original concept was to hold the festival in October this year, but a number of factors have led to us needing to change the dates to April 2020. One element influencing the decision was to wait for the restoration to be completed at our host venue, Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. “We’ve been delighted with the response from sponsors, partners and collaborators and we’re excited to be able to announce several elements of the festival - our programme is shaping up nicely! Andrew Comben, Chief Executive, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, said: “We are pleased to be working with Design Brighton on their inaugural festival. As Brighton’s leading event for the urban environment, we are keen to accommodate Design Brighton and we look forward to welcoming them into our newly refurbished space next year.” Two key partners have been announced for the festival; mixeduse developer First Base, owners of the Edward Street Quarter development in Brighton, and Building Live, which will host an industry specific event during the festival.

Barry Jessup, Director of First Base, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Design Brighton. The city is undergoing a huge amount of development and this festival will help to not only put Brighton’s world class urban design on the map but will also bring together visionaries to discuss how we can all collaborate and share knowledge to improve the built environment for all.” One of the exhibitors already confirmed is a new building system by ICF Southern dubbed the ‘Naked House’ which will showcase fixtures, fittings and products and act as a networking hub for attendees throughout the festival. The programme will include: Wed 1 - Thu 2 April: Exhibition at Brighton Dome Corn Exchange plus two conference sessions per day focused on the history of urban design and how that can shape current challenges faced by cities across the world. Fri 3 April: The day will kick-off with a networking breakfast followed by a panel of speakers discussing the future of urban development with a Q&A session. MPs from Labour and Conservative have left their parties to form The Independent Group. With just days to go until the UK is set to leave the EU, Theresa May has yet to secure a deal that will pass a Commons vote. Despite calls from the Leader of the Opposition to rule out a No Deal exit, the Prime Minister has insisted talks in Brussels will secure concessions that will ease fears over the Northern Ireland border. It is understood that Tory MPs stand ready to defy Mrs May to block an unruly exit. She has not ruled out a No Deal exit, repeatedly saying she intends to deliver Brexit on March 29. Up against the clock, there are now calls for the process to be put on hold to give the Prime Minister more time to negotiate a deal that will win the backing of a majority of MPs.

Q&A with Richard Hart

Richard Hart is the Design Manager for First Base, a mixed-use developer which, in partnership with Patrol Capital, owns the Edward Street Quarter development in Brighton Designed by BuckleyGreyYeoman, Edward Street Property Quarter is inspired by Brighton’s eclectic street scene and will introduce a new highquality public realm, with three new public spaces created by renowned landscape designers Spacehub. The scheme will also deliver 110,000 sq. ft of flexible space for Brighton’s burgeoning media and creative sectors and wider corporate community, making it the largest provision of workspace to be delivered in the city since 1993. Edward Street Quarter will also comprise 168 new homes, comprising a mix of private and affordable units to meet local demand, as well as 40,000 sq. ft targeting food and beverage, gyms, cinemas and retail units.

Can you give some details into your back-story in the industry? I started working in the print room of a large commercial architecture firm when I was 17. From there, a day release course at the West London College of Building led me to the University of Huddersfield, where I completed a BA and later a Master of Architecture. After working on major projects both here and overseas, I decided I needed a new challenge, and decided to look for opportunities within the property development industry

What excites you most about working in property development? People are at the heart of property development. When you are involved in a large project, there are numerous people and teams working on different aspects. Strong communication and working relationships between

these people and teams is key to the success of a project. One of the biggest pleasures of my job is establishing and developing these working relationships. I also love that no two days are the same. Every day brings different tasks and challenges as situations develop quickly in this business, which you need to be able to quickly react and respond to.

What is your proudest achievement? It’s extremely hard to pick a single specific achievement, given the wide range of sectors that I’ve worked across. However, I’m extremely proud of my work on projects that have made a direct difference to people’s lives, so projects that incorporate health, education, housing and placemaking. The Jack Petchey Academy, in Dalston, replaced a run-down secondary school, with an inspirational building the pupils took great pride in. The redevelopment

Richard Hart

of Forrest Place, in Perth, WA, breathed new life into a tired, disconnected city square, which linked the main rail station with the city centre. Two contrasting schemes, which had a tangible impact on the end users and the wider community.

What kind of research do you do to keep up with market and technology trends? Can you give an example? First Base is always on the lookout for the next big trend and recently sent me to Lyon to study the city’s external lighting policy. Extensive research commissioned by the city’s local government has shown that placing bright lighting in dimly lit spaces that attract crime is not the best method of deterring antisocial behaviour.

“First Base is always on the lookout for the next big trend and recently sent me to Lyon to study the city’s external lighting policy” The lighting strategy gives the city a cohesive feel after dark. Unlike other cities, there are no dominating

landscapes in Lyon. This strategy has also resulted in other benefits such as lower energy bills for the city and an enhanced sense of pride from residents. The opportunities to witness technological and design innovations, such as this example, have certainly had an influence on how I approach new design projects.

Looking at Edward Street Quarter, what are the key things you are thinking about when considering internal design? Every market has different design requirements, so we don’t roll out a single cookie-cutter solution to every project. The location and demographics of the development are extremely important when considering the design of internal space. However, as a rule of thumb, internal spaces must flow, as their success is largely based on how people move through these spaces. Good sight lines are also of essential importance in that they help to amplify the feeling of spaciousness. One of the things that we are really thinking about regarding the Edward Street development is colour psychology; getting the right palette

is critical to any scheme’s success. When using colour, we are careful about following current trends in the market. While we try to be innovative in our use of colour, we are also mindful that current trends can have limited shelflives and by the time our project is finished their time in the sun may have passed.

How have tastes changed in the last ten years? How can you future-proof internal designs to ensure they don’t date too quickly? One of the big changes is that buyers are a lot more informed and sophisticated and thus design has become more important to them. Innovative design in consumer products, such as smartphones, have brought design to the forefront of people’s minds. People often consider appearance to be as important as price and functionality when considering what they want to buy. In terms of future-proofing, this is one of the biggest challenges facing designers currently. But there are some things that never go out of fashion, such as products with timeless colours, good craftmanship and quality materials.

How Employers Can Help EU National Employees with Brexit Uncertainty As I write this, in just over two weeks, the UK will probably be Legal leaving the EU at 11pm on 29 March 2019 by automatic operation of law unless something else happens. It is fair to say that the progress of Brexit talks between the UK Government and the EU have not been easy and there is a real chance that we may exit on 29 March without a deal. From an employment perspective, businesses need to consider the impact of a no-deal Brexit on its current workforce, particularly on members of staff from an EU country. Lots of UK businesses and organisations rely on EU workers and there are a lot of questions about whether businesses can continue to engage and recruit EU nationals particularly in the event we leave the EU without a deal. There is

14 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

also some uncertainty regarding any new immigration rules which will be implemented post Brexit.

Right to work in the UK Leave with Withdrawal Agreement The Withdrawal Agreement provides for an Implementation period until 31 December 2020 during which free movement still applies. EU Citizens coming to UK after 29 March 2019 who wish to stay longer than three months have to register. EU citizens who arrive in the UK by 31 December 2020 and wish to remain in the UK after the end of the implementation period can apply for settled/pre-settled status until 30 June 2021. The application process for settled status has opened its third phase for testing and will open fully by 30 March 2019. The current application process requires an “app” which is only

available for certain android phones so there is some room for improvement from a technology perspective! Applications prior to 30 March 2019 still incur a £65 fee which will however be refunded. No deal - rights of EU citizens already in UK by 29 March 2019 In the event of “no deal” EU citizens and their family members already resident in the UK by 29 March 2019 will be able to remain here. They have until 31 December 2020 to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to protect their status. Businesses who already employ EU staff up until the 29 March 2019 may wish to encourage and support their workforce with their applications for settled status. No deal - rights of EU citizens arriving after 29 March 2019 but before 1 January 2021

Legal The government has said that employers with a Tier 2 sponsorship licence won’t have to comply with the Resident Labour Market Test from 2021. The system will be designed to be as “straight forward” and “light touch” as possible. Whether this will be the case, remains to be seen.

Charlotte Sloan

The White Paper on Immigration was finally published in December 2018. It provides an outline of what government policy will be. As expected, it will put in place what it describes as a “flexible” skills based system which favours highly skilled workers. There is currently no guarantee whether the Government’s White Paper will become law, but currently it is understood that the Government intends to implement the following immigration system from 1 January 2021:

In case of a no deal, freedom of movement will end at 11.00pm on 29 March 2019. EU nationals wishing to stay in the UK for more than three months will have to apply for European Temporary Leave to Remain. This will allow them to live, work and study in the UK for a period of three years from the date of their application. If EU citizens want to stay in the UK for more than three years, they must then apply for an immigration status under the new immigration system, which will come into effect from 1 January 2021. Those who do not qualify will need to leave the UK when their European Temporary Leave to Remain expires.

Proposed immigration rules from 1 January 2021

A single system will replace existing immigration rules Free movement will end. EU citizens will be treated in the same way as anyone else wanting to come to the UK to work or study. The government intends to remove the annual cap on the numbers of visas it issues (which has caused significant delays) and will widen the skills threshold to include people who hold qualifications equivalent to A levels. The government says this will make sure “the brightest and best” can come to the UK and “employers have access to the skills that add most value to the UK economy.” Labour market test will be abolished Currently, if you wish to employ non-EU (migrant) skilled staff you will need to obtain a Tier 2 sponsorship licence and, unless the job is on the shortage list of occupations, comply with the Resident Labour Market Test.

Minimum salary requirements are not yet settled Who is regarded as a highly skilled worker depends on the salary. The Migration Advisory Committee recommended £30,000 but many businesses think this is too high. To put it into context, newly qualified nurses and junior doctors would not meet that threshold. Low skilled workers Low skilled workers from outside the UK will only be able to work here on a temporary basis to cover labour shortages in specific sectors. The White Paper refers to construction and social care. Low skilled workers will be able to work here for a maximum of 12 months (with a further “cooling off” period of 12 months) and will be able to move between employers during that time. However, they will have no right to access public funds, no right to stay longer or lead to permanent settlement, no right to switch routes and no right to bring dependants The government says it will work with key sectors to help facilitate the change needed to reduce demand for low skilled migrant labour going forward – but it is clear that many sectors will struggle to fill vacancies if they do not have a ready supply of EU labour.

What next? It is unfortunately very much a waiting game. We do not currently know if the European Union and the Government will reach a deal, but a no deal is looking a possibility. If a no deal Brexit goes ahead businesses and their employees need to be prepared for the next steps and the (potential) new immigration system.

An evening of medieval mayhem Award-winning solicitors Mayo Wynne Baxter organise unique charity fundraiser Mayo Wynne Baxter held their second Brighton Medieval Charity Banquet 2nd March at The Grand, this time raising nearly £18,000 in aid of Sussex Cancer Fund. After the success of the unique fundraiser in 2017, the forward-thinking law firm were back creating medieval mayhem and putting the fun back into fundraising in Brighton. Corporate fundraisers are usually black tie events but this was like no other in the county. As guests arrived at the themed event they were greeted by actual knights in shining armour before enjoying tankards of ale and goblets of wine donated by The Grand. The venue was transformed into a great banqueting hall and guests were entertained by fire dancers, magicians, jesters, and medieval minstrels. Sheriff Sid Sloane (TV presenter and actor) summoned his ‘tax collectors’ to raise much need funds through games like heads & tails and he even imposed a tax on salt & pepper.

16 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

The food took a medieval theme too as The Grand’s chefs served a ‘Peasants Broth’ to start, a platter of meat on the bone for the main and a delicious apple and fig pie for dessert served with local Sussex Mead. There was a generous prize worth £750 for the Best Dressed Couple which was donated by James Ross Jewellers and won for the second time by Michelle and Geoff Rauf who had handmade their outfits. Organiser Jason Edge said “The Sussex business community have again been exceptionally generous and we had prize donations for the raffle and auction worth £11,000. There were so many prizes that it felt like everyone won something on the night. “It was fantastic to see everyone get into the spirit of things and raise money whilst having a lot of fun” said Chris Randall, Chief Executive of Mayo Wynne Baxter who sponsored the event.

develop cancer and the money raised will go towards ensuring patients in Sussex have the very best possible cancer care” said Julia Lenton from Sussex Cancer Fund. “Unlike many charities, costs are exceptionally low with only a very small percentage spent on administration; almost all money donated to us can be spent directly to benefit our patients.” Professor Chris Pepper from the Royal Sussex Hospital spoke about the work the charity does before introducing celebrated author Jo Rees who spoke emotionally about her experience with cancer. Latest TV’s Andrew Kay acted as auctioneer for six amazing lots including private use of the Sea Life Centre and tickets to the Festival of Sussex GINs in May. The final total was announced at just under £18,000 as the live band Empire got everyone dancing into the early hours.

Be the Change

Volunteers from Local Sussex Organisations Help Boost Young People’s Confidence and Career Prospects in Brighton and Chichester An inspirational programme to help local young people Charity fulfil their potential and improve their employment opportunities has been launched in Sussex. Be the Change, created in 2015 by LoveLocalJobs.com and Graham Moore of metamoorephosis helps 13 and 14 year-olds negotiate the gap between education and employment. Since its inception the programme has helped to support 2,000 young people in Sussex and now sees the launch of new programmes in Brighton and Chichester.

led by Graham Moore, a former teacher who understands the challenges facing young people today.

At the emotional and life-changing launches, the students and business volunteers took part in activities that focused on happiness, confidence, hope, relationships and employability. The activities were created and expertly

Gary Peters, Founder of LoveLocalJobs.com, said: “Year 9 is when young people make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives – from where they fit within their peer groups, to what subjects they will study

Graham said: “Our vision is for every young person to have raised hope and confidence, to have the chance to develop life skills and create positive cycles that will prepare them for life. Be the Change is a perfect vehicle to help young people develop the qualities and qualifications they need for a better future. The volunteers and the invaluable support and belief of local businesses adds a further dimension and depth to the engagement and journey the young people will experience.”

for their GCSEs. Our job is to help them recognise and build on their strengths and to give them the tools, knowledge and confidence to make the right decisions.”

Brighton Be the Change 2019 Sussex Police initiated the launch of the programme in Brighton to inspire young people by building their confidence and self-esteem to improve their employment and educational opportunities. The new Brighton programme was launched with Year 9 students from Brighton and Hove secondary schools on Thursday, January 31 at the American Express Community Stadium. The 2019 Brighton programme launched following aspirations of Sussex Police to develop a preventative programme to support disengaged young people. The programme was also made possible following the

support and business volunteers from other leading local employers, including headline sponsor Brandwatch and supporting partners American Express, Legal & General, Focus Group and Brighton and Hove City Council. The schools involved in the programme are: Blatchington Mill, Cardinal Newman, Dorothy Stringer, Hove Park, Kings School, Longhill High School, PACA, Patcham High and Varndean School.

“We are really proud that alongside our partners, we have been able to make this happen for the young people of Brighton & Hove” Donna Ward, Detective Inspector from Sussex Police, said: “We are really proud that alongside our partners, we have been able to make this happen for the young people of Brighton & Hove. We know that there is a direct correlation between school exclusions and the likelihood of being drawn into crime and so supporting those who are disengaged in education and empowering them to make positive choices acts as an excellent early preventative measure. “As well as the wealth of benefits to the children who have been selected to participate in this programme, this is also a fantastic opportunity for the nine Brighton Police Officers and staff who have volunteered alongside other local businesses to act as mentors for the duration of the programme. We are

always looking to develop new ways of engaging with and breaking down barriers with young people and programmes such as this provide the ideal opportunity to do just that.” Jeremy Holtom, Head of Year 9 at Dorothy Stringer School, said: “A superb day. Every student was welcomed and valued. They were given a boost to their confidence and a chance to share and have celebrated what is best about them. I watched a visible and positive change take place in many of my students during the course of the day. An inspirational start to what promises to be a really beneficial programme.”

Chichester Be the Change 2019 The 2019 Chichester programme launched following aspirations of Chichester District Council to develop a programme to support disengaged young people. Volunteer business guides from some of the leading local employers, including Chichester District Council, Chichester College, Petworth Vision and Vitacress, were touched by the honest and emotional stories of the local students who shared their experiences and day-to-day challenges at the Chichester Be the Change event. The schools involved in the programme are: Bourne Community College, Midhurst Rother College,The Academy Selsey, Chichester High School, Bishop Luffa and Chichester Free School. Cllr Tony Dignum, Leader of Chichester District Council said: “Students can become disengaged for many reasons,

and this can have a real impact on their personal and professional development. Therefore, it’s fantastic that disengaged young people in Chichester District will be able to benefit from Be the Change and the excellent Business Guides volunteering their own time to help inspire them. I was very pleased to attend the launch and see the project in action. We are glad that we are able to provide six of our own staff members to share their expertise and look forward to seeing the difference they can make over the coming months in helping the students to develop confidence forthe future.” Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Communities at Chichester District Council, said: “We think this a really worthwhile project which will make a real difference to students in our district. It has been great to see the range of talent, experience and knowledge we have amongst the volunteers who have given up their time at the launch, and it will be exciting to see what a difference this scheme makes to our local community.” Matt Tyman, Head of Pastoral Support from The Academy Selsey, said “I’ve seen many initiatives in 20 years of teaching but I have never seen students grow as much as these students have in one day. Seeing students who find social environments hard stand up and talk in front of their peers from their hearts has inspired me. Be the Change gets the most out of every student, no matter what barriers they put up by building confidence and selfreflection. Thank you for an amazing day.”

Eastbourne’s Most Wanted locked up for hospice fundraiser St Wilfrid’s Hospice will soon be hosting its first ever Jail and Bail fundraiser at the historic Redoubt Fortress The event, taking place on March 29th, will see a number Charity of well-known local public figures, including MP Stephen Lloyd, swapping their normal attire for jailbird dress and spending the morning behind bars. To secure their release they each need to raise £1,000 bail money between now and then. CEO of Posturite, Ian Fletcher-Price, will be doing time for three accounts of bad posture in the work place, while MP Stephen Lloyd was caught in possession of cloning equipment, used to help him appear in several places at once! Joining them, the hospice has also sentenced Funeral Director of Payne & Sons, Lee Howard, actors Jon Campling and Greg Draven, PRG’s Managing Director, Simon Groves, Chief Executive of Eastbourne Chamber, Christina Ewbank and Owner of W. Bruford jewellers, Ashley Pugh to a morning behind bars. Leader of Eastbourne Council, David Tutt and Councillor Tony Freebody will also be joining in the fun, attempting to buy their freedom.

20 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

Meanwhile, it’s not just individual convicts that have been caught by St Wilfrid’s Hospice – mischievous sisters Denise Greaves, ETC magazine, and Debbie Gotz, owner of Georgios Coffee House, will be the first partners in crime joining the Jail & Bail line-up, hoping that they can get £2,000 in the bag for the hospice. Sussex Police Cadets will be present on the day to perform official ‘arrests’ and fingerprint these reprobates before slinging them into the cells. While awaiting their fate, the dastardly crew of 2019 will have time to gather last-minute sponsorship to reach their £1,000 bail. Being locked up for ‘irresponsible parking’ outside the hospice, St Wilfrid’s CEO David Scott-Ralphs said: “It will be a fun morning – I hope – with a serious fundraising side. If we each make bail, that’s a minimum of £16,000 for hospice care in our community.” Visit stwhospice.org for a closer look at the prisoners and their fictitious crimes, along with links to their sponsorship pages, so you can help secure their release!

Do you know a potential prisoner? We’d love to fill our prison cell with as many local community characters as possible. If you know someone who deserves a spell in the clink, please contact Amber Rose on 01323 434290 or email her at amber.rose@stwhospice.org with your suggestions.

The Green Show Seaford Contemporary Illustrators & Printmakers A community group have ambitious plans to bring a Charity contemporary art exhibition to a beautiful disused barn on Seaford Head. The innovative 8 day event will also provide creative workshops for all ages, lectures, animation and films all connected to a theme of environment, nature and landscape. Confirmed artists so far include Sir Quentin Blake, Donna Wilson and popular local printmaker Graham Carter. All artwork will be for sale and profits are going back into funding similar events in the future. The SCIP team hope to provide regular affordable arts events in the Seaford area and invigorate the cultural scene. As the venue has never been used for any such public event, the SCIP team face unique hurdles in putting on The Green Show. South Hill barn has no electricity or running water (as yet) but this has not put them off! With a bit of creative thinking and the generous support from the public and several Sussex businesses, the team have been able to secure materials to construct a ‘pop-up’ gallery within the main barn and a generator powerful enough to provide lighting here and in the separate workshop area. It’s a great start but many more items will be needed to put on a quality event and that’s where you can

help. They are, in their own words, a team with big ideas but modest resources. There are various corporate sponsor ‘packages’ still available which in return, offer unique advertising opportunities and very positive exposure for businesses of all sizes. Whatever element of the show you wish to support, your logo will be featured in all printed material, online, in social feeds surrounding the show and prominent at the event itself. You also receive a limited edition Green Show exhibition poster and reserved places at the private view evening in the middle of August. Starting at £50 for the Show Supporter package, you will benefit from all of the above or a donation of £200, to sponsor an evening lecture, would also see your brand projected on screen in the mini cinema.

£400 would sponsor the free children’s workshops including Quiet Zone spaces

provided for children with learning difficulties. One of the children’s workshops will be with popular CBeebies presenter Ferne Corrigan so expect a lot of media attention there! Full details of all available packages can be found at wearescip.co.uk/the-greenshow/. If nothing there is quite the right fit for you, the SCIP team are also open to bespoke agreements. A Q&A with: Kevin Murgatroyd We’ve heard from the MD of Oasis Empire Ross Edmonds about Interview the whole company and its offering, we’re now here with Kevin Murgatroyd who specialises in branded clothing.

How did you get into providing clothing for your clients? It was a natural progression from our experience with the promotional products sector as well as something that was constantly requested by our clients. We’ve been branding clothing for over 10 years now.

Branding can raise awareness about a business. How effective is branded clothing? Extremely. It’s an extension of a business’s brand culture and often the first thing their own customers will notice. Getting it right will always leave a lasting impression.

What services do Oasis offer? With regards to garment decoration, we have traditional silk screen printing, embroidery, DTG (Direct to Garment), Transfer & our latest technology, ‘XHD’. We also offer a professional garment rebranding service where we can add a clients’ own labels or swing tag inside the garments which are then poly bagged so the clothing has a retail feel .

22 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

So what makes you different from your competitors? As with every area of our business, we like to be ahead of the curve, be it through advancements in technology, decoration techniques to the fabrics used in the garments themselves. We have an in-house design team who work with clients to make sure their logo or artwork will look perfect, as well as the ability to hold and call-off stock which can all be managed via our on-line system. We also have a free garment sampling service which allows more confidence in what the the finished products will look like. A lot of our competitors charge a premium for these services!

What type of business do you work with? It’s hugely varied. One day we could be working on branding uniforms for a blue chip technology company and the next day, be working with an up and coming fitness brand to launch their own gym wear line. Each job is unique and has its own exciting challenges so it’s a great feeling when you see the final result.

You don’t just work with local business then? A lot of our clients are local throughout Sussex, including Worthing Theatre, Underground Gym, University of Sussex & American Express. But we work with clients in all industries, all over the UK and more recently, all over the world. Just this month we’ve shipped finished

clothing to customers in Japan, Poland & Spain.

How have you developed your branded clothing range and what are your plans for the future? We work with the largest clothing wholesalers in Europe so now have express access to over 4700 garments including 500+ new for 2019. From workwear through to lifestyle & fitness clothing, the range is ever expanding. We’ve got a great story to tell & with continued investment in technology there’s no better time to talk to us. We’re based in the heart of Worthing town and customers are always welcome to come in, meet the team and start their journey towards better branding. Your Business. Your Insurance.

In December last year Preston Insurance Brokers turned 6 years old and at any anniversary it is always a good time for reflection as well as planning for the future. Managing Partner Noel Preston has Cover been doing exactly that “It’s a weird one, Feature it only seems like yesterday we started but at the same time the business folk we meet when we’re out and about say it seems like we’ve been around forever (hopefully that’s a good thing!).”

24 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

So how long have you been in insurance yourself? “thirty years this year! Some people would say it’s quite sad to have been doing insurance for that long but I really enjoy the industry and it has opened up some amazing opportunities and experiences. It’s not quite the stayed and stuffy industry people think it is!.” “Having an initial grounding as an Underwriter for General Accident

Insurance in the early 90’s was invaluable. The training there was extremely thorough, you were hardly allowed to sit at your desk for the first month. You had daily intensive product and technical training so when you did hit the desk and phones you at least had a good starting knowledge.”

So what made you change from poacher turned gamekeeper (if that’s the right expression)?

“It’ll do! In the 90’s there was a lot of consolidation in the insurer market and General Accident decided to shut down a number of their local branches and unfortunately ours was chosen. Fortunately, I had built some good relationships with the Brokers I dealt with while working there and before I even had to think about looking for a job I was approached, offered a job and have been in the Broker fraternity ever since!.” In what is a relatively short period of time, Preston Insurance Brokers have certainly made a positve impact and gained a renowned reputation within the business community throughout Sussex, so we asked Noel what he thought was the backbone of this achievement. “I think there are a number of factors”, Noel continues. “We have built a really tight little team, a mix of personalities and experience but all with the same positive attitude and pride in delivering the service our clients deserve. The whole team also hold industry qualifications, something we

take very seriously, having the balance of a robust technical expertise is a great partner to the personal service and relationships we build with our clients.”

In addition to this, what makes Preston Insurance Brokers stand out from everyone else? “A year into the business one of our clients summed it up nicely, good old-fashioned personal service, with the corporate clout! We don’t take ourselves too seriously but we take what we do for our Clients extremely seriously. Arranging insurance that adequately reflects and protects them could be the difference between their business surviving a partial or total loss!.” The business also has the continued support of someone Noel has known for a long while. “When you start a business, it helps immensely to have the support of others. In business Partner Ian Penfold (and his company the A One Insurance Group) I was extremely

lucky to be given the backing, belief and opportunity to set up Preston Insurance Brokers. For someone to show faith in you at the beginning is massive. You then want to make sure that faith is justified and repaid. Hopefully to date this has happened.”

“In what is a relatively short period of time, Preston Insurance Brokers have certainly made a positve impact and gained a renowned reputation within the business community throughout Sussex” You seem to be quite a straight talker for a professional in an industry that is perhaps well known for jargon, is that unusual? “Maybe, perhaps not so much these days though. We prefer to keep things

www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk 25

Cover Feature relationships with. It’s a very informal and fun evening. Being able to give something back and enjoy social time with everyone is just a nice change.”

simple and avoid unnecessary sales and technical speak where possible. It is vitally important though to know the technical side of our business and be able to explain this to the clients but how you do this is where the difference is made. Sincerity, honesty and openness are all key traits, being able to communicate with the person in front of you. I really think everyone has had enough of the boardroom bingo, low hanging fruit and helicopter views, we will leave that for The Apprentice!.”

So no hard sell from Preston Insurance Brokers then? “Correct. We only hand out business cards when someone asks for one and we respect the fact that every potential new Client will already have an existing relationship with a Broker, which quite often is, or at least deemed to be, a good one.”

So how do you win them over? “Simply, by being courteous, polite and getting to know them over a period of time. Waiting our turn. If you haven’t been recommended or referred it can take time to gain trust and build a relationship before they consider giving you the opportunity. We’re happy to be their Plan B. It may be that the contact at their Broker changes or the Insurance Brokers themselves are bought out by another and faces change or service deteriorates. It could be a periodical review of their insurances isn’t due or has recently been carried out. Also, when they do come and ask you to

26 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

become involved, they are doing so because they want to and not because they’ve been put in a headlock and pressurised into doing it.”

So while you’re patiently waiting and building these new relationships, how do you and have you grown your business and increased your Client base to date? “We have fantastic Clients. I’d say about 90% of our new Clients come from recommendations, referrals and introductions from the existing ones. Our Client retention rate is 98%, which speaks volumes. This is one very good reason to ensure our service levels remain at the top of their game, otherwise we wouldn’t only lose Clients, we’d lose our new opportunities as well!.”

Do you socialise with your Clients at all? “We sure do – that is the fun part of our job! We support charity events through the year, as well as some sporting ones and always take the opportunity to share these occasions with our Clients. We also have an annual works anniversary bash at Gars Chinese restaurant in the centre of Brighton. This is a chance to thank our Clients for their business through the year and show our appreciation. As well as Clients we invite our team, business contacts and introducers, along with the prospective Clients that we are building

I met with Noel at perhaps one of their more well-known Clients in Sussex, namely the British Airways i360 on Brighton Seafront. So how did that happen! Noel explains, “Well, an existing Client of ours was involved in managing the project team throughout its development and kindly recommended us to the Board. We spent a lot of time there over a period of 6 months or so, getting to know the people, understanding how the attraction was built and works, inviting insurers to come and see for themselves so they fully understood the risk they were interested in providing a quote and cover for. While insurance cost always comes into the equation, we won the contract largely due to our approach. As a Brighton boy it was a very proud moment to be appointed as the Insurance Broker for such an iconic and original attraction in our City. Our business was only 3 years old at the time and this certainly helped publicly confirm our credentials and abilities.”

“Our Client base is extremely varied both in business/industry type and size. As well as visitor attractions, we also look after commercial and residential property owners, manufacturers, retailers, motor traders, storage and distributors, construction, sports & leisure clubs, professional services, licensed trades, media & marketing...the list goes on!” So are all your Clients this big and iconic? “Haha, not quite, but all just as important in their own right. Our Client base is extremely varied both in business/industry type and size. As well as visitor attractions, we also look after commercial and residential property owners, manufacturers, retailers, motor traders, storage and distributors,

Noel playing drums with his rocking covers band Planet Trousza at the i360 for Teenage Cancer Trust - South East Appeal in October last year

construction, sports & leisure clubs, professional services, licensed trades, media & marketing….the list goes on! If it’s a business, we can look after it! We enjoy looking after them all, whether they are a new start up or a business employing hundreds of people.”

Your reputation, certainly throughout Sussex, is very much looking after businesses for their insurance, do you arrange insurance for individuals as well? “Yes, and no. The online home and motor insurance market is saturated, we’d be mad to try and compete in that arena. However, directors and partners of the businesses we look after don’t always want to insure their prized possessions with the direct insurers, so we happily look after them and give them the same sort of service personally as we give their business. These are mainly mid-high net worth home insurance policies.”

Charity & Music? Tell us about that... Noel and his business have also been quite prevalent in supporting the local

community, aiding charities with a personal connection. “Rockinghorse Children’s Charity and Teenage Cancer Trust – South East Appeal have both played a large part in looking after my eldest son both when arriving into the world and recently in his teenage years”. Noel put on the 50 songs for 50 years event in 2017 to celebrate Rockinghorse’s 50th Anniversary and last year a gig at the i360 for TCT, raising a combined total of around £13,000 for the charities. “It’s important where possible to help raise awareness, support and contribute to such worthy local causes. Music is a particular passion of mine so when we were thinking of doing something for each of the charities, combining the two was not only successful but also immensely fun and enjoyable for all concerned. We’re very lucky in Sussex, the support for our events from the local business community was and always is fantastic.”

So, what for the future?

Broker in Sussex continues. “I am pleased to say that we are actively looking for new staff, to join and complement our team. A Client Executive, someone who has the same passion for looking after local Clients and with the drive and determination to help us grow our business throughout Sussex. Followed by an experienced Client Handler to help us ensure the exemplary back-end service, which we have become so well known for, continues.”

This all sounds really positive? “Absolutely, we’ve also got some other exciting plans for this year. We will be running insurance campaigns for particular business sectors, within which we already have a number of high profile Clients and following that a Scheme for an emerging and evolving industry. There is lots to look forward to and you’ll hear about them here first in SBT!.”

“Last year we moved across the road to larger offices to give us some room for expansion. No delusions of grandeur but we don’t want to stand still. Our quest to become the go-to Insurance

Sun, Sea & Strategy! Sack off the ‘Grey Away Day’. Opt for team building fun in an exciting destination says Ian Lucas, Founder of Group Travel Experts, Red7. Let’s be honest. Team Building Away Days rarely hit the Travel mark. How much fun can you really have building a bridge out of dried spaghetti in a motel off the M23? You know the kind of day I’m talking about, right? Whiteboards covered in forced feedback, pointless plans on huge pages of A1, pastries that look like they’ve been sat out since last Wednesday, bad coffee and a team that’s expected to feel gratified that they’ve actually been ‘let out of the office’. And that’s all before the dodgy buffet lunch. It’s hardly inspirational stuff to help your team vibe and motivation soar.

time and perhaps a spot of surfing.

After you’ve talked through improving your company’s bottom line, head into the hills above Puerto Banus to spend the rest of the day chilling at the luxe Nao Pool Club before enjoying a private sunset cruise and an al-fresco steak dinner at Marbella’s iconic Oak restaurant.

Prague Perfection Sometimes it’s not all about the beach and the grand central European city of Prague is perfect for teams who perhaps aren’t so fussed about strategising in their swimwear. Prague, where gothic architecture and a wealth of history rubs shoulders with cutting edge tech companies, is buzzy, friendly and absolutely packed in Summer. Spring and Autumn are calmer here, with great bargains to be had on flights,

cosmopolitan hotels and sleek apartments. Teams building activities range from Olympic-standard white water rafting on the River Vltava to Go Karting and gin tasting and there’s plenty of calm, inspirational thinking time to be had here, as you wander through the city’s cobbled streets, soaking up Prague’s grand culture, history and finde-siécle cafés between focused strategy sessions.

Experience ‘Sun, Spa and Strategy was the Key to My Team Success’ “It’s so easy to get drawn into the day-to-day business, so I had to get my senior team AWAY! We decided to go overseas - somewhere with all-year sun!” says Rob Reaks, Red7’s Head of Sales & Marketing. “As Sales Director of a large fundraising agency, I decided we needed ‘Sun, Spa and Strategy’! And so to banish those winter blues, we jumped on a cheap, short flight to Gran Canaria. We went in February but Autumn works too as it’s still warm and sunny in southern Europe, Marbella or the Canary Islands and it doesn’t clash with school holidays.

32 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

It was a chance for us all to get away from the office, see blue skies and beautiful landscapes, experience somewhere different and inspirational. Financially a few days away in the week, out of season, also made sense. Whilst we were away, I would break each day into 3 chunks: Sun, Spa and Strategy. When we worked on company strategy at the villa we were utterly focused, because we knew that relaxing free time was coming later! We returned refreshed and motivated to make the company’s next year the best yet. It was such a great investment - both in time and money - so we did it annually thereafter!”

Anne of Cleves House Worth divorcing Henry VIII for?

One of my favourite authors, C.J. Sansom, managed History to combine law and Tudor history into an extremely successful historical fiction series. The Shardlake series is atmospheric and gripping, bringing Tudor England to life. C.J. lives in Sussex, a county rich with Tudor locations. Go and read it today. One such place, Anne of Cleves House Museum, is a fantastically wellmaintained property, allowing visitors to explore Tudor and Elizabethan life. Situated in the beautiful town of Lewes, the museum has a true-to-life set up kitchen and garden with traditional Tudor plants still on show. Built in the 15th century, the house formed part of King Henry’s annulment settlement, a key part of English heritage. Love him or hate him, most people are fascinated by his reign. This marriage was not a happy one (although was one of the least tempestuous ones he had), with Henry readily telling close

confidants that he was not impressed with the choice of bride. Henry spoke disparagingly to his close ally Cromwell: “I liked her before not well, but now I like her much worse” after a failed consummation of the marriage. At this stage Henry VIII wasn’t in full obese and leg-sore mode, but I doubt the night was much fun for Anne either. The annulment was pushed through and Henry’s settlement offer of Richmond Palace, Hever Castle and Anne of Cleves House was considered most generous. Considering she kept her head and was given a palace and a castle, I’m minded to agree. My title is obviously jovial, as she had no choice in the annulment. As well as the kitchen and garden, there is a fantastic exhibition of Wealden iron making (a key product for the area). The kitchen has exposed timbers and brick floor, with a bread oven and a marble table that bear the marks of centuries of use. The bedroom has been restored to Tudor brilliance, making it easy to picture how the house would have been utilised during Anne’s time (although she didn’t live here, and probably didn’t

visit the property at all!) A particular highlight of mine is the 16th century fireback plate that depicts the burning of Protestants during a particularly bloody period of Queen Mary’s reign. I am not advocating burning people with alternative religious views, but the craftmanship is excellent. If you need more reasons to visit, the museum also covers the history of Lewes and life in the area since the Tudors. Once you’ve finished, treat yourself to tea and cake in the on-site café. I realise I advocate eating cake at each historical site, but there are worse ways to finish a day out.

WINE OF THE MONTH White Wine Casa de Cello San Joanne Vina Verde 2017, Douro, Portugal £11.50 Amazingly fresh, zippy, wonderfully aromatic Vinho Verde. It has a lovely citrus core, with touches of pear, both of which are finished off with a delicious sherbetlike zing that cleans and revitalizes the taste-buds and gets you ready for the next mouthful. Absolutely fabulous with oily fish, so tuna, or our favorite, mackerel - either in sushi format or pan seared. One of our personal favourites and on our “most likely to be cracked open at the end of the day” list. Plus it’s vegan friendly.

Red Wine El Abasto Malbec 2018, Mendoza, Argentina, £10.50 An exceptionally smooth, together, sophisticated Argentinean Malbec from El Abasto, one of Mendoza’s new wonder wineries. Wonderfully rich, spicy brambly fruit flavours, with immense legnth and lashings of creamy, but balanced, oak. Absolute stunner and nails all the aspects we love so much about Malbec from the South American continent. Awesome with any kind of pasta bake or frankly a four seasons pizza. You only need something simple to highlight how damn good this wine is.

Sponsored by The Brighton Wine Company It’s still chilly outside. We’ve no doubt got at least a couple of cold snaps and one more flurry of snow before Spring is sprung. So in wine terms, we are still in need of whites and reds that warm the heart rather than chill your boots. And here’s the perfect pairing: a brilliant sprite but structured white from Portugal and a cracking Malbec from Argentina.

SEARED MISO, SAKE & MIRIN MARINADED DIVER CAUGHT SCALLOPS. Serves - 4 .............................................................

Difficulty level - Hard

This is the kind of dish you would preferably enjoy in a restaurant due to the level of work involved and relative difficulty to source some of the ingredients. So why you ask do we wish to share it!? Because once you have visited your fishmonger, gathered the ingredients together, invited some friends over and got stuck in. I guarantee your hard work will be rewarded once you see the reaction on your guests faces after the first mouthful.

Ingredients for scallops and marinade Diver-caught scallops removed from shell and roe - x 12 white miso paste - x 2 tsp Sake - 150ml Mirin - 150 ml Grated palm sugar - 75 grm

Method Simmer all the marinade ingredients together in a saucepan on a medium heat and reduce to a third. Put aside and allow to cool. Add scallops to marinade once cooled and keep in the fridge for 2 hours.

Ingredients for garnish Soy and sesame oil mix (50/50) - 75ml of each Fried Pancetta - cubes Sliced scallions - 1/2 bunch Chopped coriander leaves - 50 grm 4 Quails eggs - (boiled for 3 1/2 minutes) Fried seaweed - 100 grm Pickled ginger - 100 grm Steamed bok choi - 300 grm Micro red amaranth - 25 grm

Method Pan fry scallops 4 at a time on a medium to high heat for 45 to 60 seconds on each side depending on the size of the scallops.

Put a quarter of your soy and sesame oil mix in each of the 4 bowls. Add around 200ml of the hot Ramen to each bowl. Place cooked buckwheat noodles evenly in each bowl, dress bowls with the chopped scallions, fried pancetta, quails eggs, fried seaweed, pickled ginger & bok choi. Place two chopsticks over the bowl and add the scallops in a row on top of the chopsticks for decoration. Finish the dish with a small amount of red amaranth on the side.

How you’re one breath away from feeling great! I love a quote I once heard about how our breath is portable and Health how it is our best tool to control our state of mind at any time. And it is so true. You take your lungs everywhere you go, and, if you aren’t breathing, you’re dead! It’s becoming more and more well documented that breathing is one of the best forms of stress relief and performance enhancers.

another driver that is about to make another mistake that they can criticise and attack. Person B on the other hand is take a deep breath with a long exhale. Mutters something under their breath about how annoying that was. But 5 minutes later has a normal resting heart rate and has returned to normal. They are drive as normal. Conscious of the road and environment around them able to enjoy their music playing and company in the car.

Person A and Person B. Both are driving and get cut up by a car in front who clearly makes a mistake.

Now I don’t have to tell you that out of the two scenarios that Person B is the more desirable one (unless you enjoy being angry and stress). And these weren’t made up scenarios. These were 2 situations I had been in before where I was the passenger. But I’m sure in your life at some point you are able to relate to this.

Person A begins to swear, honk their horn and shout at the driver in front. For the next five minutes, their heart rate is elevated, and their breathing has not returned normal, as they are breathing out their mouth in short shallow breaths. Moreover, they are on the lookout for

But the fundamental difference in both these scenarios, was their breathing. I wasn’t aware of it at the time as I hadn’t been educated on the effects of breathing but now, I can see it was a total game changer. Only the other day, I lost a load of work on my laptop

I’ll give you a quick example of where I see breathing becoming so important in everyday life and you tell me which one is less tense, and which one is more calming.

38 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

and rather than losing my head, I chose to breath, and it worked. Rather than spending wasted minutes or hours complaining about it I just got on with what I needed to do to better the situation. The simple strategy of breathing to focus, calm, re energise and be aware is something that I now teach with professional athletes and is well documented as something that the world’s top performers are engaging with. So why aren’t you trying it? You have the same tools that they do! Before I give you a couple of tools to use yourself. Let’s quickly go over a few of the benefits.

“In the busy world we live in our focus is constantly being shifted from place to place”

Health FOCUS

BOOST ENERGY

In the busy world we live in our focus is constantly being shifted from place to place. It can be really easy to lose your focus on your desired task that you’ve set out in the day. By simply stopping and focusing on your breathing allows you to think really narrow down to one simple thing at that moment before you move forward with the rest of your day. The brilliant thing is that you can literally do this as many times as you need to. Your lungs are always with you!

When you are low on energy, whether that’s hitting a midday slump or whether it’s in the morning. We are able to pick up our energy levels through breathing by oxygenating the brain leaving us more alert and effective to perform.

STRESS RELIEF Usually a result of loss of focus, and all the reasons that cause it, end up resulting in higher stress levels. Higher level of cortisol (our stress hormone) can have a wide range of negative effects on our physiology. Through breathing techniques, we are able to switch on our parasympathetic nervous system which allows us to return to our rest state much quicker.

AWARENESS Through the process of breathing we are focusing on a task that is internal and with this allows us to train ourselves to be aware of all other things that are going on internally. Not just physically but psychologically. These are only a few of the benefits in which you can get from a breathing practice, and by breathing practice, I mean simple breathing techniques that you can learn to use at certain times and scenarios during your day. So how do you do this? A couple of techniques that I use regularly are 3-4-5

breath and belly breathing. You can view these in this months Top Tips. 3-4-5 breath: Sitting comfortably, inhale for a count of 3, hold for 4 and exhale for 5. Repeat 5 – 10 times Belly Breathing: Either seated or lying comfortably, Hold one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. When you inhale only let the hand on your belly rise, keeping the hand on your chest stay still. When you exhale the belly should fall. Repeat this 5-10 times. Give these a go and let me know how you get on.

Find a comfortable seat or lying down. Slowly begin to close your eyes, breathing normally. Think of a place in the world, scenery that you once saw that was incredible. That made you feel good. It could be a holiday destination, a sunset, sunrise, beach, park, mountain, anywhere where you felt it was breath-taking. Picture yourself in that place and continue breathing. Notice all the different areas, the colours, the sounds, the smells. Stay here for as long as you feel comfortable. Before opening your eyes.

With café culture booming, we are drinking more coffee than ever.

From standing step one foot back to a relatively comfortable distance. Bend into the front knee, keeping the knee above the ankle and in line with the toes. Draw back on the right heel to lengthen the back leg. Option to reach the arms overhead. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Caffeine from coffee has a half-life of up to 12 hours and can have drastic effects on getting a good night’s sleep. Try to reduce your reliance on coffee by not drinking past 12pm and see how it effects your sleep at night, leaving you energised the next day!

Restaurant Review:

Kouzina Restaurant This month’s restaurant review is Lunch bought to you from Brighton’s buzzing Review open market. The market is situated in a busy high street but, on entering, you do get the distinct market feel. Returning this month to our more traditional working lunch, we visited Kouzina, a family-run Greek restaurant in the heart of the market. Being half Greek Cypriot myself, I felt there would be no one better than me from our team to write this review. As with many Mediterranean countries, food is at the heart of their culture. Families and friends, meeting and enjoying wholesome, simplistic, quality cuisine that is bursting with flavour. I was fortunate, growing up being exposed to some amazing dishes prepared by either my mum or Stede (Nan) - such as Seftalia, Stifado, Macoroni Tou Fournou, Fasolakia, to

40 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

name a few. I was, therefore, excited to see many of these dishes on the menu as we arrived. On arrival, on a Friday lunchtime, the place was heaving, which is always a good sign. We were greeted by Ana, who showed us to our seats and got us some drinks. Looking at the menu, we were keen to try a selection and asked Ana if we could have a small variety of some of the main dishes we requested. To start, we had an amazing Meze with selection of Tzatzki, Halloumi, Greek salad, pitta breads and homemade Sheftalia, one of my favourites growing up. They were not far short of amazing. I would always recommend Meze in a Greek restaurant. Similar to antipasti in Italian, it’s the perfect way to try a mini selection of starters which, for someone like me who finds it difficult to decide (as I usually want more than one), is great.

“We were then presented with an eclectic array of main courses, as opposed to a small selection, and in true Greek style we had approximately four to five main dishes.” We were then presented with an eclectic array of main courses, as opposed to a small selection, and in true Greek style we had approximately four to five main dishes. There was a lot of food and it reminded of being at my Stede’s. My colleague and I dived straight in. Among the dishes, we had Spanakopita, Moussaka, Pastitsio, Fasolakia and Yahni. All homemade traditional Greek cuisine, bursting with freshness and flavour. The Pastitsio, or as I knew it growing up Macaroni

such as the Fasolkia (green bean, carrot casserole) and Yahni (chickpea, spinach, potato casserole). Here at Kouzina you will truly get a great taste of traditional Greek food.

Tou Fournou (oven macaroni), was my favourite dish as the taste took me straight back to my Stede’s, which is possibly the highest compliment I can pay any restaurant. The most beautiful thing about Greek, and a lot of Mediterranean cuisine is its simplicity, combining various herbs, spices and seasonings to give the most basic of dishes incredible flavour,

After potentially over-eating, as I always struggle to leave any meal, I simply had to leave a little room for the homemade Baklava, which I saw on the menu. Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert pastry, made from layers of filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts, sweetened and held together with syrup. This, accompanied by a traditional Greek coffee, was simply delightful and a perfect way to finish our meal.

“Kouzina is a small restaurant in the heart of the of the open market. After an extremely busy lunch period, towards the end of our meal we had the pleasure of speaking with Vassoula,

the owner. She informed us that a lot of the fresh ingredients she gets direct from the market, which is great as you really do get a true sense of community among the tenants there as they support each other, very true to the Brighton/Sussex business community in general. Kouzina is a small restaurant in the heart of the of the open market. Its atmosphere and ambience fits perfectly with its surroundings. If you are looking for somewhere different to grab some lunch during a busy day, or wish to catch up with a friend or colleague, I would highly recommend it. Greek food is in my opinion truly some of the best in the world (although I may be slightly biased on this point). However, to get a true taste of Greek cuisine, you will not go far wrong at Kouzina. It provides a buzzy, busy atmosphere with a true taste of traditional Greek cuisine and treats. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Hotel Review: Malmaison Hotel A haven of quiet luxury. It was my Hotel absolute pleasure to experience a stay at Review the Malmaison Hotel at Brighton Marina this month. As a business traveller, this hotel provides everything you could ask for, with free wi-fi, 24 hour room service and a same day laundry service, making life much easier whilst away from the office. I arrived at the modern, dimly lit bar with my guest and we opted for a glass of fizz to start off the evening. I saw some wonderful cocktails prepared, and remember making a mental note to return for drinks before a night out. Upon entering the Chez Mal restaurant I was struck by how modern and spacious it was. Our waiters were all friendly enough and we chose a special menu, which was a promotion of Chateaubriand for two and a bottle of Malbec for £49. I was a little cynical of that offer, and a remember joking to my colleague that that probably didn’t include sauces or sides. I had to eat

42 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

my words when we were presented with what could only be described as a feast, including onion rings, béarnaise sauce and fries, not to mention a rather delicious Malbec. An absolute bargain and I will, if my diary allows, definitely return just for this deal alone.

settle into. Although I had no bath, the shower was immense and the luxury toiletries helped. The hotel itself, and especially the room was modernly designed and well decorated with clean, modern lines, large retro lamps and an indulgent view to the Marina which was divine, both at night and again in the morning. The bed was large, clean and crisp and made for a cosy, peaceful night’s sleep.

The food itself was mouth-watering, prepared to a very high standard in both cooking and presentation. The steak was cooked faultlessly and the side dishes all arranged carefully for a perfectly instagrammable shot! I would not hesitate in bringing any business contacts here. All the clients I observed in the restaurant were well taken care of and attended to, despite that there was a private party and the staff were clearly busy. We could not manage a dessert so enjoyed the last of the wine. We left with our bellies full and our cheeks red and will be returning soon.

“It would have been a waste not to enjoy the temptation of gazing out to the sea in the sunshine, knowing I had plenty of time before check out and everything I could need was in my room.”

I adjourned to my room which was a double sea view room. I have to say that a business traveller must have designed or at least had a major input in these rooms. It was so easy to

Plug sockets galore, a desk to work on, a coffee machine in-room and an array of sweet treats displayed in a basket in case hunger strikes made it very easy to get to work in the morning. The best

part is that check out is not till 12pm which allows for a lie in, breakfast and some time to get work done in the peace and quiet of your own room. For me, the balcony and an unusually hot February day made this experience even better. In the summer these Marina-facing rooms will, I have no doubt will be much sought after. I went to the restaurant for breakfast rather than having room service and I’m glad I did. The breakfast room, towards the back of the restaurant, is almost right on the Marina with a large outdoor section which I imagine will become immensely popular in the summer, and a great venue to host a corporate event. I indulged in a long lazy breakfast despite my workload. It would have been a waste not to enjoy the temptation of gazing out to the sea in the sunshine, knowing I had plenty of

time before check out and everything I could need was in my room. The breakfast was again fresh, with a lively and lovely waiter who helped me choose from the options and knew when to leave me alone in my thoughts which shows his professionalism. I could have stayed for hours but I had work to do and after filling up on the delicious food and coffee I headed back to my room to get some work done. I haven’t once cancelled plans for a hotel review yet, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of the Malmaison so much, that after my afternoon meeting was cancelled, I decided to work from there for the rest of the day. After checking out I headed to the large reception area, near to the bar. There are many plug sockets and serene surroundings which made for a very productive afternoon. I would be happy to head there to work

and enjoy the view on any sunny day and I suspect they will be seeing a lot more of me. So, for the business community this is without doubt a very welcome addition to Brighton. The two things we want most is an environment where we can work uninterrupted and a space where we can eat/sleep/relax. We want to be able to switch between the two very quickly and this hotel is the one place designed for exactly that. A thoroughly enjoyable experience at a very reasonable cost. I would suggest that once word spreads, the summer and indeed the Christmas months are going to be very busy at the Malmaison. I would highly recommend booking this if you are looking for a place to stay in Brighton.

Business Car Leasing for Self-Employed plus Car Expenses Are you self-employed and looking to lease a car through your business? if so, you’ve landed on the right article.

Motoring

The idea of this article is to look at business car leasing options for self-employed, and what self-employed car expenses you can claim.

In the UK, self-employment has increased drastically over the last two decades. The number of self-employed workers has increased from 3.3 million in 2001 to 4.8 million in 2017, according to the Office for National Statistics. An individual can be deemed as selfemployed if they:

44 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

• • • • •

Own a business, rather than work for an employer Agree a fixed price for their work with their employer or client Be your own boss i.e. set your own schedule and prices Works for more than one client Provide the tools, equipment or materials that they need to complete a job

With statistics covered, can selfemployed workers qualify for a business car lease? You can lease a car through a business

if you are any of the following; • • • • • • • • • •

Self employed Limited Company A Partnership A VAT registered business A Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) A PLC A Charity Local Authority Central Government An Embassy

If you are self-employed then you can get a business car lease because you’re essentially operating as a sole trader.

“Leasing a car rather than owning one can liberate money for the self-employed worker or business to spend more profitably in more ways than one” So, now that we’ve established that self-employed workers can qualify for a business car lease, what documentation will you need to provide before you can lease a car?

If you are given the all clear by the finance company, then it means you are eligible for a business car lease.

If you are business leasing as a sole trader, you still need to go through a similar process as someone that is personal leasing.

If you lease car through a business, the odds are you will likely have to pay company car tax.

Here’s what you may have to provide: • Your latest set of trading accounts • Your last 3 months bank statements • Proof of address • Proof of ID

Do I have to pay company car tax if I am self-employed?

However, you do not have to pay company car tax if you: • Are a Partner or a small Partnership • A member of a Limited Liability Partnership • You are the owner of your own business / sole trader This ultimately means that as a selfemployed worker, you do not have to pay company car tax as there is no legal difference between you and your business, you will always own your vehicle.

Here is a brief guide on what selfemployed car expenses you can claim As a sole trader you have two options to claim a tax deduction for your business miles.

Actual motoring expenses First and foremost, you will need to keep a record of all your mileage – whether it’s for business or personal purposes – and at the end of the year you will need to calculate how much mileage you did.

www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk 45

But what about when you use it for dual-purposes? Let’s say, for example, you might use it mainly to drive to clients, but you’ll also need go to the supermarket and private weekend use. You will need to keep a log of all your receipts and motoring expenses over the year including: • • • • •

Petrol (normally you should mark down the starting off mileage and after finishing the end mileage figure) Car insurance Road tax MOT Repairs and maintenance

At the end of year, once you’ve calculated how much mileage your vehicle has done, you will need to work out what percentage was for business – this is equal to your business miles divided by your total miles. Your tax-deductible expense is then your total motoring costs multiplied by your business use percentage. We advise that you keep your motoring expenses receipts and your mileage log with your tax records so you can show evidence of how you calculated your mileage expense to HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs)

If you use the actual cost method, you can also claim a ‘capital allowance’ for the purchase of the vehicle. You can learn more about capital allowances on www.gov.co.uk.

Flat rate for business mileage Alternatively, you can claim expenses using a flat rate for business mileage. The flat rate covers the entire cost of buying, running and maintaining the vehicle so you can’t claim ‘capital allowance’ for its purchase. For cars, the flat rates can be seen in the table above; Again, you’ll need to keep a business record of how many business miles you travel. Remember: once you start using the flat rate for a vehicle, you can’t switch to the actual cost method. However, you can use the actual cost method for a different vehicle.

SBTMotoring Reviews Landrover Discovery Sport Everyone should have one. Its 7 seats are very useful for bigger families and shared school runs alike and even at a pinch can do short journeys for extra adults. It’s pretty quiet and very comfortable, with a great Meridian sound system. I was listening to a reviewer describe the Landrover Discovery Sport as a posh family car for people to take their children to their overstructured after school activities. Although I agree with the sentiment (especially the excess time us parents spend ferrying our children around), I would say however that this car is not just be for those that consider themselves posh.

The drive is great with good suspension and grips the road well for this type of car. There will always be a bit of a roll, but then we are not testing a Lamborghini here. It is excellent off-road and can certainly handle the fields next to the kids’ horse trials and more!! Safety wise there is all round sensors and cameras and air bags everywhere you would expect including in the back. A safe ride in both function and form, you feel in control and therefore

safe driving the car. It is the right size without being too big for Sussex country roads without feeling flimsy. Ok there are couple of pet peeves and in the interest of honesty here they go Some of the materials could be a little more refined but then I am being a bit pernickety here The calibration with the digital fuel gauge isn’t perfect and the “miles to empty” can sometimes be way out. (I had a gauge with quarter of a tank but only 4 miles to go !!). If it’s any consolation Range Rover autobiography has the same issue. The infotainment system could look better on screen but does do the job I stress that none of these are deal breakers, and to me is about a good a car that you can get for the money.

The Impreza

The Impreza is noisy. The Lineartronic CVT may have the advantage of there being no gear change, unfortunately it does lead to a loud acceleration if done quickly. That being said there is no discernible stepping up of the gears and as such one can look at this as a trade-off. The road holding is excellent with little roll or understeer. All in all, one feels protected. The safety features of the

48 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

car are pretty good especially with its eyesight features and emergency brake system and lane sway and departure warnings keeping the driver on the straight and narrow.

these days. I would say that it Is not that intuitive but then after a few tries as an owner rather than reviewer, it won’t be a problem as you will get used to it.

The inside of the Impreza is what you would expect for a car of this standard and although won’t win any design awards is certainly robust with ample bin space in the door, space under the armrest and of the all-important cup holders.

Given how competitive the market it is difficult to write a review whereby the Impreza shines above its peers, however that doesn’t mean it is not a good car. It does have all-wheel drive – something unusual in its class.

Its reasonable and better than past versions. Boot size is reasonable as is the space in the back for two adults or three children. The infotainment system looks fine and has all the usual accoutrements one would expect. It is difficult not to be picky with pretty much any system

It is a good car for the daily grind and certainly if you have messy children, you won’t be too on edge, given the hardwearing nature of the interior. Price wise I would say it is average and fair for what you get.

Chamber News

Global Trade The Sussex Chamber of Commerce Chamber sits at the heart of local business News communities, helping hundreds of companies of every size and sector to grow and thrive. Trade has existed for hundreds of years. Whether directly or indirectly, each and every business contributes to the global economy. Visitors, tourists, employees, components, parts, supplies, food, and currency move around the world helping businesses grow. The Chamber network is focused on the practicalities of Brexit for business communities across the UK. Since the referendum, the Chamber of Commerce Network has been working together with members, to identify areas where companies have concerns and calling for government to answer those practical and pragmatic questions. We believe that there’s power in working together. As the UK approaches its departure from the EU, it’s crucial that businesses are doing all they can to prepare for the future, so we’ve compiled resources to help firms plan for change.

GROW There are over 80 networking events throughout Sussex to choose from which provide business with opportunities to network, gain key contacts and insights as to what is happening in the local community and beyond. The international trade forums open doors to allow SME’s to be part of the supply chain and work with larger organisations internationally. International payment requirements and travelling overseas on business can be a huge cost. Businesses can access Moneycorp, a foreign exchange service which provides benefits such

50 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

as; free currency accounts, low transfer fees and competitive exchange rates to Chamber members.

DEVELOP Training across your workforce, from shop floor to executive level and in any discipline, improves competitiveness, morale, profitability, market share, customer satisfaction and company reputation and profile. In these uncertain times training increases your ability to respond effectively to change. Our highly respected international trade courses cover all the main principles of international trade dealings. Our courses provide you with the key skills required in understanding the paperwork, tariff codes, an introduction to export procedures, the use of documentary letters of credit, drafts and bills right through to understanding the rules.

DISCOVER The Sussex Chamber is licensed to certify and arrange legalisation of export documentation. Export documentation is required to comply with import regulations in the country of arrival, evidence the country of manufacture of the goods and ensure payment under a Letter of Credit. The Chamber can help businesses with a variety of export documentation. No Deal Brexit Contingency Planning The Chamber network continues to work to avoid a messy and disorderly exit from the European Union in the 29th March. However, business need answers they can base decisions on, no matter the outcome. This includes the trade documentation to prove origin. Should the UK reach a withdrawal Agreement with the EU, then the existing documents that the Sussex Chamber currently issues to exporters will continue to be used throughout any period of transition.

As part of our contingency planning for a no-deal Brexit, our colleagues at the British Chambers of Commerce have worked closely with HM Revenue and Customs and Department for International Trade on the revised format of preference and nonpreference certificates of origin. In the event of a no-deal Brexit we have made preparations to enable us to provide exporters with continuity of service through the issuance of revised ‘United Kingdom’ documentation. This will be ready and available in time for March 29th.

INFLUENCE The British Chambers has campaigned strongly for official government guidance and they have, where possible, welcomed the technical notices, partnership packs and other details of ‘no-deal’ planning published by the UK Government as a result. The published policies on hiring EU workers, postponed accounting for import VAT and support for the UK’s continued involvement in European standards setting respond directly to Chamber calls for clarity and forward planning. Important though these are, we need the same level of clarity across many other aspects of the business environment - especially international trade where so many basic questions remain unanswered. For a full update please review our website.

The Sussex Chamber is proud to be at the heart of Sussex, providing business the opportunities needed to grow the local and global economy, to develop its employees and the future workforce, to discover new markets and influence key decision makers. www. sussexchamberofcommerce.co.uk

How Startups Can Develop a Winning Sales Strategy Starting a new business from scratch can be Business daunting. But, if you know your market and your customers, you can develop a successful sales strategy that drives growth. If you want to grow sales quickly, it is important not to put all your eggs into one basket when it comes to marketing. That is why a successful sales process is supported by consistent marketing across the following platforms: • • • •

Online Face-to-face Networking Trade shows/exhibition

One of the biggest considerations when starting a new business is how to manage financial risk. You may be surprised to learn that the sales processes that work best are often lowcost or free. Great ideas that support your goals often take little more than imagination. This is especially true when it comes to selling on social media. Here, the direct sales pitch may not work. Cadbury garnered more than one million ‘likes’ on Facebook when it crafted the thumbs up ‘like’ icon from chocolate and posted it online. This attention-grabbing gesture appealed to its audience - and cost little more than the ingredients used to make the edible sculpture.

Be a success on social media Social media is a great launch pad for new businesses and products. Heinz discovered this when it launched Five Beanz. To support the launch, the company devised a “Which bean are

56 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

you?” quiz for its Facebook page. The personality-based quiz attracted 10,000 shares, 22,000 likes and reached 11 million people. Try to think of ways you can use social media to promote your products or services without spending a single penny. You can encourage people to share your posts with incentives such as entry into a free draw. The prize could be low-cost but practical promotional merchandise that will carry on marketing your products long after individual social media posts are forgotten. Think of pens, mugs and umbrellas. Make sure your business has a presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. It is also worth pinning links to your products on Pinterest. Starting new Pinterest boards is easy - and it’s free. Remember not to let vanity cloud your judgement. Impressions and engagement rates are more important than follower numbers. Use hashtags on Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram to reach people outside of your immediate audience.

The value of face-to-face marketing Face-to-face marketing instantly connects you to potential customers. Not only can you show people your products and how they work, you can highlight the benefits in much more detail. Customers like dealing with a business in person. What’s more, you can learn from the experience by listening to and taking onboard feedback. One of the biggest growth areas in sales is networking. It connects new businesses to the right people and helps budding entrepreneurs extend their contacts quickly. In fact, networking is now considered as important as referrals. You can start networking to grow sales by joining a

local business club. If you are new to this type of marketing, these tips will help you: • • • •

Find out who is attending an event in advance and make a note of who you would like to be introduced to Always carry business cards Arrive early and leave late to make the most of networking events Don’t be afraid to talk about the weather or general business topics. Nobody wants to be subjected to a full-blown sales pitch the first time they meet you

Not convinced networking is for you? Consider these statistics: up to 85% of jobs are now filled through networking; 41% of networkers want to network more frequently; 100% of people say face-to-face meetings are essential for long-term business relationships; the close rate for in-person meetings is 40%. With 7 out of every 10 millennials saying going into the office isn’t necessary, you need to take note. B2B buyers, for example, are increasingly millennials and they love networking. * Statistics from HubSpot

Trade shows bring your ideal customers to you One of the best places to showcase your products or services is at a trade show or business exhibition. If you choose an event that complements what you do, you will have a ready audience; people who are interested in your products and services. For example, I organise West Sussex Expo and Brighton Expo. They are both geared to the B2B sector and businesses looking to expand sales in specific geographic locations.

Business The benefits for exhibitors is that they know what they are offering will be seen by their ideal customers. Can you imagine having thousands of potential customers all under the same roof, at the same time? It is great for businesses because this type of marketing increases awareness about their brand, helps them make new connections and also brings in sales all in one day. This is another form of networking and why business shows are popular. Exhibiting at a trade show does not have to be expensive. For example, a stand at West Sussex Expo starts at under £400. Exhibitions can also be great fun and open up huge opportunities.

Stop for a minute. Think about the concept behind your brand. Is it something that could be replicated? If your answer is ‘yes’, franchising could make you a fortune.

Franchise your business to make money quickly

How to corner niche markets

Are you scratching your head trying to come up with a quick way to make money from your business model?

Franchising can be applied to a wide range of business concepts. What’s more, the financial risks are relatively low and the rewards can be high. The biggest hurdles include the legalities of starting a franchise, effective marketing and consistent quality control. If you want to know more about franchising, there is free advice in the blog section of my website www.monkmarketing.com

The quickest way to woo customers is to know and understand them. If your sales process uses content to generate leads, make sure it offers

value. Give your audience free tips and valuable information that can be put to use. Gear your marketing to the age, gender, location and interests of your ideal customer. Increase sales with cross-selling, loyalty schemes and rewards. The sales process is changing. Customers want personalised marketing and exceptional buying experiences. Give it to them across multiple platforms and engage them with marketing that appeals to what they like. Do that and you will create fans of your brand and loyal, repeat customers.

If you want to develop your sales strategy and have any questions about the topics raised, I am happy to answer any questions. mike@monkmarketing.com

Networking in Sussex

Gaydio Brighton SBT is delighted to have partnered up with Gaydio Brighton

SBT are delighted to have partnered up with Gaydio Brighton and support The Gaydio Business Mixer (Bizz Mix). It is a monthly network club with no membership. The concept behind it is for those that attend to mix with one another and build relationships, so rather than a formal event with lots of speakers it is all about you. We play networking games, switch cards, have a DJ and Photo Booth. it’s informal and fun! It’s on the 4th Thursday of each month, and the event changes, all at

58 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

different times of the day so you get to meet different people and it’s also open to all as we appreciate not everyone’s work schedule can commit to say lunch, or dinner events. We do not have delegate lists. Instead we have a closed linked in group for attendees which is an open forum to continue to build relationships and also showcase your business. From January, our film partner Picture Book Films will be filming at the events.

Their short films will capture the essence of the event and will be used for both marketing and PR to continue to build the Gaydio Brighton Business Mixer Brand.

The next fantastic event is on Thursday 28th March at Malmaison 5-8pm. To get involved contact rachel@gaydio.co.uk

An afternoon at Cobb Lunch Club With so many different networking events in Sussex it can be difficult to choose where to spend your time. Last month Sussex Business Times joined Cobb Lunch Club at The Dome, Hotel du Vin for its monthly networking event. The lunch club was formed in 2007, and 12 years later it continues to enjoy a fantastic reputation for excellent networking along with a strong social conscience. Bringing together directors and partners of Sussex businesses with a turnover of £1 million plus, or who employ at least 10 staff, the club is a great chance to meet senior business people at the top of their games. As well as a delicious lunch and a chance to network, there is also always an interesting speaker. Last month we heard from Glen Foley, a podiatrist who has worked for the special forces supporting the rehabilitation of injured service personnel. Glen worked within the NHS for six years, covering all areas of podiatry. On leaving the NHS he took on a role with the Ministry of Defence at The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. Glen spoke about some of the servicemen and women who he’s supported, many of which who have gone on to achieve fantastic things. As well as hearing from Glen, we also heard from Elizabeth Baxter, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Care for Veterans - a charity that provides nursing care and rehabilitation to physically disabled ex-Service personnel of all ages.

Daniel Wade | New Practice Development Manager at WPA Healthcare Practice PLC Business format franchising is the granting of a license by one person (the franchisor) to another (the franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to own and operate their own business under the brand, systems and proven business model of the franchisor.

Can you give a brief overview of the UK franchise sector?

Daniel Wade joined the WPA Healthcare Practice as a franchise owner in 2009 covering areas of Sussex, Kent and Surrey. Since then, he has grown his franchise to become the largest business out of the 80 strong network. He is a two-time finalist of the British Franchise Association ‘franchisee of the year’ awards putting him in the top 15 franchise owners out of 48’000 in the UK.

Daniel, please explain simply what franchising is?

EXPERT

The UK franchise sector is thriving. It generates an estimated £17bn to the UK economy and employees over 700,000 people. There are more than 48,000 franchise owners in the UK who are all running their own businesses under the licence of a franchisor.

What brands are currently in franchising? Some of the worlds largest brands using franchising to grow their business. The obvious examples are the fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Subway and Dominoes. However, there are

There was a fascinating study in 2006, where Princeton psychologists discovered that it takes a 10th of a second for us to form lasting impressions of strangers just from looking at their faces – making snap judgements about characteristics as diverse as intelligence, integrity and trustworthiness.

60 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

Why do you like franchising so much? It is such a safe way to run your own business. There is a proven business model which you can invest in and know your investment is safe. Less than 1% franchise businesses close due to commercial failure compared to nearly 50% in the wider business environment. You can also grow a large business with 6 out of 10 franchised businesses turning over more than £250,000.

Finally, what tips would you give to someone looking to invest into a franchise business? Firstly, do your research. Franchising is a partnership, so you need to invest in a brand that you trust. Secondly, look at a sector that you are passionate about. Like starting any business, it’s very tough to launch your business so you will need the passion to keep you going!

David Green | Headshot Photographer, Shoot Me Now That has huge implications in a business context today, where our first encounters with anyone from potential clients and employees to future colleagues are often with their digital profiles; on LinkedIn alone, research shows that profiles with professional headshots get 14 times more profile views and make it 36 times more likely that you will receive business related enquiries.

Why is it so important to have a good headshot for business?

businesses across all sectors.

And, as Oscar Wilde once said: “You will never get a second chance to make a good first impression”. What are your 5 top tips for a great headshot? 1.It might sound blindingly obvious, but smile! It’s by far the most impactful characteristic that makes people want to engage with us. 2. Keep it simple. avoid backgrounds that are too busy, and which are not

relevant to your business (holidays and weddings are a no no!) 3. Dress as you would if you were meeting a new client, but avoid the latest trends; they might make you look like a hotshot today but dated and out of touch by next year. 4.Keep it current. Don’t be seduced into using that favourite photo of yourself that’s 10 years old; authenticity in business is everything. 5.And please, no selfies! At worst, they imply you don’t take yourself seriously as a professional. Your headshot isn’t ‘just a photo’, it’s a marketing tool – use it wisely! Every Friday during March, David is reserving studio time for low cost headshot sessions. Check out this link for more information www.shootmenow. co.uk/headshot-fridays. 07810 805 332

Charlie Murgatroyd | Director – Nuplanet Sustainable Solutions Standard push the way we construct new buildings with low energy demand targets, with EnerPhit designed to deliver energy efficiency through retrofitting existing buildings.

Charlie formed Nuplanet, a Sustainability & Low Energy Building Consultancy, in 2010. The practice has worked with a wide range of clients on a variety of projects from bespoke houses to large regeneration schemes across the UK.

What is a low energy building, and why should we build more in this way? A low energy building is designed to go beyond minimum Building Regulation standards with the aim to reduce running costs and CO2 emissions. High efficiency standards such as PassivHaus and the AECB Building

It makes sense to change the way we build with the average house creating between 3 and 5 tonnes of CO2 each year through heating alone, and heating fuel costs increasing sharply over the last 10 years putting a number of home owners into fuel poverty.

Will build costs increase when building a Low Energy Building? The AECB Building Standard is a low risk option which will deliver 70% reduction in emissions. It is aimed at those who want to build a high-performance building using widely available building systems and technologies at little or no extra cost. The key to holding onto the project budget is to keep things as simple as possible, and early appointment of an experienced professional team.

What are the benefits of a low energy building? A well-designed low energy building offers much more than just low running costs and CO2 reduction, as a highperformance building it will also offer improved comfort levels, and a healthier environment through improved air quality and enhanced natural daylight.

What is considered when designing a Low Energy building? Getting the building layout right is one of the most important factors to ensure that the building takes advantage of natural resources such as heat and light from the sun. Other considerations are enhanced building fabric design with low heat loss through the floors, walls, roof, glazing and external doors. The building should be designed as air tight as possible so there is minimal loss of the conditioned air. Good ventilation design is also a very important factor.

Made in Sussex: Eco Gym Eco Gym is the UK’s first sustainable gym group. We harness Brand the power of human focus energy through our cardio equipment and put it back to the grid, offsetting our carbon footprint along the way. We became the first gym in the world to be accredited by Green Circle and were able to quantify the impact we were having on the planet. This meant we could start to take steps towards reducing that impact as the business grew. In 2015 we came across an opportunity to set up a gym on the beach in Lancing. The building was being engineered with sustainability at the heart of its design. We were looking for ways to operate our business that would complement this design and Eco Gym was born. The business functions as any other gym would but with one main difference: we harness the power of human energy and send it back to the grid using micro inverters in our cardio equipment. Whilst this may seem quite technical, it does not change how the user operates the equipment.

62 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

Anyone can join our gym and help reduce the carbon footprint we are responsible for. We opened a second site in Brighton in 2017 and this is where we really started to look at each aspect of the business. It meant we could be in control of the project from the start. We decided to make positive changes to the site before we even opened. We looked at the lighting, flooring, heating, water, showers and decided to make our cleaning materials from non-toxic products. Our simple idea has now grown in to something so much more than we thought it would. It’s clear that there is a need for sustainable solutions in the industry and this need continues to grow. We have been working with an investment advisor who specialises in sustainable and ethical companies with an aim to grow Eco Gym to a national level. We envisage a network of gyms, all working towards reducing the impact the industry has on the planet.

We are working with Paddle around the Pier this summer. As corporate sponsors of Surfers Against Sewage, we are part of their 250 club. We are opening our doors on Monday April 22 for Earth Day. Members and non-members of all ages can take part in a competition to see who can generate the most energy in 5 minutes on our Eco Treadmills - the only ones in the world that put energy back to the grid. Our aim is to raise awareness not only of the gym but also the importance of Earth Day and a sustainable future. We will also be having a friendly competition against our US partners at Sacramento Eco Fit to see which gym creates the most energy.

Follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook or pop into one of our gyms in Lancing or Kemptown. We are also currently looking for corporate partners. Learn more by emailing us on info@eco-gym.co.uk
