Autumn Issue 2015 £3
Autumn is quite simply the best time to decorate. As we come to the end of the hectic summer, when holidays become memories and we settle down to snuggle up in our nests, our attention turns to the home and how we can enjoy our surroundings more. Life can be dull, but not if we walk through our front door to the colour and energy we can create. We have some fabulous trends, and walls can be embellished with shimmering glitters or the deepest blues to say something about who we are. With Christmas racing towards us, there is always the anxiety of getting everything looking shipshape for our family and visitors over the holidays. At wallpaperdirect we have some stunning bedding to work with fabrics and wallpapers and a fresh new rug will always lift a room. Colour is certainly being enjoyed more and more as the neutrals are making way for fabulous corals and pinks. I have just decorated my kitchen with a bright pink wallpaper with humming birds and even I am surprised at how uplifting it has made the space. So, take some time, browse our magazine for inspiration and enjoy all the ideas we have put together to make decorating easy.
Happy Decorating!

TREND: FLIGHTS OF FANCY
Flights of Fancy Let your imagination take flight with winged and feathered patterns over your walls this season The classic 18th Century penchant for Chinoiserie, with its elegant birds of paradise on exotic foliage, trees and blooms, continues into the 21st century. Bringing images of wildlife into your home as part of your decorative style is a perfect way to create a calm oasis while, at the same time, expressing the quirkier side of your personality. You can use a simple motif, repeated throughout your rooms, or a multi-layered decor that uses detail in wallpaper, curtains, cushions and pieces of art.

One of the hottest trends for Autumn 2015 interiors is feathers on their own or on birds, butterflies together or nestled in flowers, and leaves and branches. Whether delicate single feathers or richly coloured birds and butterflies highlighting sophisticated floral trails, this classic trend has been reinvented with the use of metallic and lustre inks. Teal blue is an easy shade to live with in both living room and bedroom and the Keilena design from Albany Paradise, with its finely drawn white

Ethereal floating creatures and textured plumage to bring a hint of luxury around this style. You could even go wild with all-over butterfly wings, as the stunning feature design Butterfly Grove from our Albany Fusion collection. Which with its lovely mix of Teal and Burnt Orange is right on trend, although not perhaps for those who shy away from colour. Rich, indulgent colourways such as the deep blue feather design from Thibaut, epotimise the bold side of this trend. We just love the strong colour bands of the individual feathers, which are softened by the delicate fluffiness of the feathers too. In 1904 Clement and Mary Brewer established the business of C Brewer and Sons in Eastbourne, East Sussex. By 1920, the number of wallpapers chosen to go into the shop’s stock collections had risen to over one hundred. Clement and his sons wanted a title that would give their collection presence in the eyes of the customer. Having spent time in London, Clement was familiar with the high-class Albany Mansion flats off Piccadilly, where the interior decoration was said to be of the highest standard. And so it was that their name was used for the Brewer pattern book collections. With over 150 stores now, the original Brewer family would be very proud to see the success of the business, which is still family run. Indeed, Brewers now holds a Royal Warrant as suppliers of decorating materials to Her Majesty the Queen. Over the years, these Albany collections have been collated from wallpaper designers all over the world. In the last fifteen years, Holden Décor has become an important part of that selection. A leading independent designer and supplier of wallpaper, Holden Decor was established 25 years ago in Darwen, Lancashire by Derek Holden. The design-led approach and ability to generate designs that encapsulate the global trend towards British style have heightened the team’s credentials. Derek was instrumental in establishing heavyweight Italian vinyl in the UK, and his eye for detail and colour has made the brand synonymous with quality WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 9

and good value. Derek’s knack for identifying trends in both colour and design has contributed significantly to the global success of the Albany Books. Many of the Albany/Holden Decor collections are proving to be extremely popular in the USA. Alise Heemstra, Business Development Manager for wallpaperdirect.inc, says: “There is not a day when we are not sending out samples of these papers to our US customers. They really enjoy the quirky, British design style.” The mix of papers from the Holden Decor brand includes: heavy vinyl, flock, expanded vinyl, glass beads, and flat papers bursting with colour and design. The Albany/Holden family of books has grown alongside the variety of products available. There are currently 14 of these books in the Albany family, offering an exceptional range of quality products at competitive prices.

ELLA DORAN
EVERYDAY LIVING Ella Doran Design: Fusing art and design for everyday living
For Ella Doran, inspiration is never far away, often lurking around the next corner. So she doesn’t have to travel very far to find something interesting. Ella uses her camera to capture images from both the natural world and manmade environments she finds herself in. In her eyes, sunlight is the magical ingredient that brings to life all the colours, patterns and abstract forms that fire her imagination. Assembling imagery and patterns from raw photographic material and then having that artwork applied to functional everyday products, Ella straddles the gap between digital artist and designer. But she does so with great poise and success. Her illusionistic geometric repeat, ‘Geo’, won the Grand Designs award for best wallpaper in 2010. The design captures the captivating play of light and shade across the angular surface of architectural wall panels. It is part of a series called ‘Concrete Inspirations’, whose 3D designs invite the viewer to touch them and check that the ornamental latticework or hyper realistic disks are not in fact protruding from the surface. Also worthy of praise, though, are Ella’s playful figurative repeats that send a jumble of countless bicycles wheeling across your walls, or hundreds of butterflies fluttering over them. So, whether you’re looking for clever illusions or charming icons, look no further.

MYLANDS BRINGS LONDON TO LIFE

Mylands, Britain’s oldest family-owned and run paint and wood polishes manufacturer, launches 31 striking new colours inspired by the world’s greatest city
M
ylands, the oldest familyowned and run paint and wood polishes manufacturer in England, is launching 31 striking new paint colours this September. Their debut Colours of London palette made quite a (colourful) splash back in 2012, when the company first launched onto the consumer market after more than 100 years of being available solely to trade consumers, and now they’re adding to it a broad spectrum of new colours. We asked Dominic Myland, Managing Director of Mylands, a few questions about his exciting new range. What makes the colours so special? Mylands paints are made by a skilled 14 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM
team of colourists using unique recipes, superior ingredients and an unwavering dedication to quality. Timeless colours with a rich depth and paint formulations that are thick, lustrous and easy to use are what really set Mylands apart. Renowned for its outstanding coverage and opacity, Mylands paint is exceptionally hardwearing and beautiful to look at. How do I use the new colours? The new colours – like all Mylands paint colours – are available in a comprehensive range of interior and exterior paint finishes, for walls, ceilings, wood, floors and more. With over 100 colours available in each finish, you can add colour
underfoot with Mylands Floor Paint or transform the exterior of your home using Exterior Masonry paint, to name a few. All our finishes are water-based, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) content, making them kind to you, your home and the environment. What was the inspiration behind the new colours? Colours of London is inspired by the great city of London, home to Mylands since its beginnings in 1884. Named after some of London’s most iconic buildings, districts and characters, the new colours pay homage to the capital’s unique stories of heritage and design, both historic and contemporary. To give an example, the soft white

tones of Maugham White No.2 were created for a restoration project and named in honour of Syrie Maugham, a leading interior decorator of the 1920s and 1930s who popularised all-white rooms. Why is Mylands relatively unknown, given that it is 150 years old in 2015? For most of its history, Mylands has supplied only to trade, remaining a best kept secret amongst interior and design professionals for over 130 years. In that time, our long association with the film, television and theatre industries has seen our paints featured in some of the world’s most successful productions, including James Bond, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Les Miserables. However, due to popular demand from customers who had seen and heard about our paints, Mylands was made available to consumers in 2012 with the launch of Colours of London. Since then, we have enjoyed great popularity because our rich and pure paints are perfectly suited to all manner of homes, whatever the style.

Why should I choose Mylands? Each shade of Mylands is one of a kind, meticulously crafted using only superior quality ingredients and natural earth pigments. Beautiful yet durable, Mylands paints and wood finishes are equally well-suited to both classic and contemporary schemes, and have been perfected over decades to perform from the tin to the wall, and beyond. Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark
All too often, we are frightened of decorating with dark colours, and yet designers love the stunning effects they create. Deep, dark hues in wallpapers and paint can make for a sophisticated, warm and cosy environment.

trong colours can make small spaces a lot more dramatic, allowing the colour of accessories to shine through. In the USA, black background wallpapers have always been a must, with strong floral designs printed on dark backgrounds to give a sophisticated and confident look. A ‘spatially challenged’ entrance hall with limited natural light can be decorated in deep hues to have a fantastic impact on guests arriving at your home. Dark wallpaper can be a dramatic appetiser for the main spaces. Besides, using light colours doesn’t always make a space seem bigger. Dark blue, for instance, works with so much – as your favourite denim jeans do! Whether you are choosing a navy wallpaper or sofa, it will complement other shades and is also very practical. Another popular example is deep red in the dining room, which stimulates appetite, conversation and potentially romance in candlelight. Nature’s dark wood tones and mossy greens can lend a room great depth. The printing process used to make wallpapers can offer stunning textural effects. If you are going to get in touch with your dark side, do invest that little bit more in a high quality paint to ensure good coverage.

We love Abigail Ahern’s fabulous colour palette – not a white in sight! The more expensive paints are pigment rich and therefore require fewer coats. Some darker wallpapers have the ends of the rolls pre-coloured – you can use a chalk to gently colour the fibres on the end of the roll before hanging to avoid seeing any white from the paper. You can paint a dark stripe on the wall where the joins fall, but do make sure to follow soaking times to get the best results. Non-woven wallpapers are pasted to the wall, which makes them easier to apply, but use a good quality ready mixed adhesive for the best results. Albany Moss wallpaper gives the incredible illusion of a mosscovered wall. The dark wood panelling that is also available in Albany’s range of Natural Textures has an amazing emboss and really does look like wood – so much cheaper than the real thing!

oung British brand Scion was launched in 2012, offering cutting-edge yet accessiblypriced fabrics and wallpapers with an enduring appeal and distinctive individuality. Now an established brand leader in contemporary interior design, Scion continues to launch trend-led products, including a range of funand-funky home accessories. Scion’s latest wallpaper collection, Levande, is a testament to their youthful and fashion-forward spirit. The Scandi-inspired designs are produced using lino-cuts, giving the upbeat motifs a hand-crafted, homespun look. Levande’s playful and uplifting designs include a light-hearted interpretation of foraged hedgerows, naively-drawn trees, a fabulously oversized floral, and a charming push-bike motif. These feature wallpapers are complemented by modern geometrics, multi-coloured stripes, textured-look plains and a cheerful Abacus design. The essence of the collection is encapsulated by its palette of blush, slate, cobalt, apple and poppy. To complete the look, Levande’s wallpapers are accompanied by a range of joyful and exuberant fabrics. For simplicity of use and ease of hanging, the Levande wallpapers have

Matthew Williamson conjures up the glamour and excitement of pre-revolutionary Cuba in the era of Hemingway and his contemporaries in an exotic collection of wallpapers and fabrics for Osborne & Little
Matthew Williamson
Since its inception in Swinging Sixties London, Osborne & Little has grown as a British brand to become one of the world’s leading fabric and wallpaper designers. Their reputation for innovation and quality has kept them at the heart of interior trends, from the paint effects of the 1980s to the holographic papers and digitally printed designs of today. It is only natural, then, that the brand has collaborated with internationally acclaimed designers at the cutting edge. To add to their long-standing relationships with the celebrated interior designer Nina Campbell and the elegant Parisian design studio Lorca, in 2013 Osborne & Little partnered up with Matthew Williamson. The Manchester-born fashion designer first began to make his name, whilst at Central Saint Martins College, with
his critically acclaimed 1997 debut collection, ‘Electric Angels’. Since then, Matthew Williamson has become internationally renowned for his signature aesthetic, which combines his mastery of print with embellishment, attention to detail and kaleidoscope colour. His eponymous fashion house has developed an inimitable style that has long appealed to both celebrities and industry insiders alike. Matthew Williamson’s love of colour, pattern and texture has been paired with Osborne & Little’s savoir faire in furnishing fabrics and wallpaper to bring us a series of collections that reflect a refined yet spirited sense of glamour inspired by global and artistic influences. Williamson’s original sense of design and colour translates beautifully into furnishing fabrics and wallpaper, making it a natural extension of the brand. His inaugural collection at Osborne & Little, launched in autumn 2013, took an alluring and decorative collection of designs from the catwalk and reimagined them for interiors. In this, the ‘Eden’ collection, Williamson’s use of cerise, jade, lemon, rose, amethyst, teal and electric blue gave a modern twist to the ancient myths and legends that informed the designs. Williamson went on, in 2014, to reveal his ‘Samana’ collection, which made use of a highly individual colour palette of vibrant jades, kiwis, neon yellows and WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 27

fuchsias, interspersed with restrained yet captivating combinations of neutrals with charcoal, ivory, linen and taupe, to transport us to an island paradise. At the same time, a semi-plain ottoman curtaining fabric was introduced to complement the bold patterns in ‘Eden’ and ‘Samana’. This season, Williamson conjures up the glamour and excitement of prerevolutionary Cuba in the era of Hemingway and his contemporaries with an exotic collection of wallpapers and fabrics. Within this collection, ‘Tropicana’ is a deep and mysterious palm design that was first drawn and hand-painted for Williamson’s S/S 15 fashion collection, used on chiffon gowns. Williamson told us, “I wanted a very hand-done feel with broad brushstroke effects to create a design that would transport you to a rich, luscious jungle setting.” Travel and nature are You can constant sources of inspiration find more from for Williamson, which is evidenced by ‘Arini’, a Osborne & Little wallpaper design that takes on wallpaper Macaw parrots as its subject. The brightly-coloured Costa direct.com Rican birds are set against a shimmering metallic background, sure to make quite an impact. Then, jumping over to the Caribbean, in his next design Williamson has made pineapple and butterfly motifs hop to the Habanera – the Cuban rhythmical dance from which the design takes its name. The naive quality of the imagery gives it a playful and relaxed look. Finally, true to form, in his ‘Leopardo’ design Williamson uses the very emblem that has become synonymous with the brand: a peacock feather. First featured in his ‘Electric Angels’ fashion collection, it remains an enduring motif of Matthew Williamson. This season, they float between leopards in a fantastical composition that brings the wall pulsing into life. This latest collection certainly maintains Osborne & Little’s reputaion for boundarypushing excellence.

esigners Guild is an international, luxury lifestyle brand, known for its vast colour palette and dynamic sense of creativity. Headed by Creative Director Tricia Guild – the author of many design books and a leading figure in the world of interior design – the brand launches fabric, wallpaper and accessories collections
twice a year. They include Designer Guild’s signature hand-painted florals, graphic geometrics and stripes, as well as a vast library of plainer, more textured designs. Guild’s passion for offering a lifestyle that is fresh and contemporary finds expression in the way she combines colour, pattern and texture. These are the three ingredients that Guild
believes are essential to the creation of a well-balanced and harmonious space that sings with personality. The story of each collection begins in the design studio, with original, handpainted artwork. Consequently, each brushstroke and detail is captured in the final printed fabric or wallpaper. As Guild explains, “There is a real alchemy to the WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 29
DESIGNERS GUILD way we design and, for me, every detail is important. The placement of each petal, leaf or stripe can radically alter the overall feel of the design. My approach has always been intuitive and, as a result, the collection grows in an organic way. The design studio is where a collection is created. For me, it is truly where the magic starts.” The initial ‘spark of inspiration’ can be found in a whole range of sources, from architecture, the arts, and nature, to the places that Guild visits in her travels. “I believe you are what you see. Every moment of our lives, we are taking in visual impressions of the world around us that can be stored as a sort of internal pattern book of images, later to be retrieved and used in the creative process,” she says. “These fragments can become the beginning of a collection. This is how inspiration works for me.” This autumn, the collections are influenced by the 19th century Aesthetic Movement, led by artists such as BurneJones, Rossetti, Alma-Tadema and Leighton. Their raison d’être was ‘l’art pour l’art’ – ‘art for art’s sake’; the celebration of beauty without restraint. The new designs evoke this PreRaphaelite spirit with stunning, painterly flowers against cloud-filled skies or plasterly damask grounds that give layers of pattern and a soft, translucent
30 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM
impression. These are counterbalanced by designs that bring a graphic edge, with geometric detail inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, personified by Pugin and Lutyens. The colour palette is as broad as the artist’s palette. It ranges from soft, chalky shades of rose pink, eau de nil, duck egg and grey, to deep damson and indigo shades, accents of brighter colours and even glimmers of gold and silver. But the story doesn’t end there; the brand is also launching an extensive array of ‘Essential’ collections. These designs offer wonderful texture, with options ranging from chunky chenille, plain wool, and shimmering and matt velvet, to linen and cotton. They are available in a multitude of colours, including the bright shades for which the company is so well known, as well as masses of natural and neutral shades, greys, black and white. Guild’s new paint range is an expansion of their already-ample colour palette, which comprises 154 shades that can give a matt, chalky finish to a space. Guild summarises, “I love the fact that, at Designers Guild, you can find something rich and decorative, but you can also find something sleeker, less patterned and pared back – there is something for just about everyone”.

T
he Harlequin brand is internationally renowned for its inspirational designs and use of colour, and their latest collection is no exception! This autumn, Harlequin are launching ‘Palmetto’, a range of atmospheric designs in evocative shades. The collection captures elements of Jazz Age glamour, 1920s luxe, and the botanical fervour of the 19th century orchid hunters. It also keys into the current trend towards organic silhouettes, offset against sultry backgrounds for maximum impact. Palmetto has been designed by the Harlequin studio’s Becky Brown, who gives some insight into what inspired her: “Over the last 18 months, I have been watching trends evolving in both fashion and interiors. It seems to me as though the bright flowers of previous years have given way to an altogether

more mysterious mood. The feel for 2015 is dreamlike and enchanted, expressed through wild foliage, graphic botanicals and delicate flora and fauna.” The starting point for the whole collection was a botanical document that portrayed the inside of an opulent orangery, with its exotic rubber plants and passion flowers. This distinctive look has been carried over into the eight striking wallpaper designs, many of which are embellished with metallic inks, micas and gloss finishes. The designs include an elegant crane on a stylised cloud background, heightened by a soft, shimmering ground; an extravagant ostrich feather motif; beautifully etched flora and butterflies on a metallic, textured background; and a detailed, graphicplaced dragonfly. The collection is enhanced by its powerful colour combinations, such as graphite with almond, ink with chartreuse, seaglass with willow, and coral with mint. To help you tie your interior together, Palmetto also provides a range of sumptuous fabrics, plain silks and luxurious velvets that complement their wallcoverings. www.harlequin.uk.com

LITTLE GREENE
The long-established and innovative British paint company, Little Greene, has set out to challenge our preconceptions with its latest foray into paint and wallpapers: ‘Blue’. Bolstered by the success of their ‘Grey’ colour card in 2013, Little Greene has channelled the coolest look on the catwalk into its fashion-inspired ‘Blue’ collection. Comprising 21 paint shades – 17 of which have not been published by the company before – it aims to present blue at its very best. Dispelling the myth that blue is a cold colour, the palette encompasses a wide spectrum of tones, from confident indigo to calm linen hues. Also included is Little Greene’s seductive ‘Ultra Blue’, a uniquely pigmented colour that is mixed by hand in their factory and will only be available as a N ew limited edition paint. B ran d Alongside the paints, Little 1950 ’s Greene has also produced a new compendium of ‘20th D e s i gn Century Papers’, which brings together the most popular designs from three previous collections: Retrospective Papers, Oriental Papers and 50’s Line Papers. Existing designs have been re-mastered to harmonise with the ‘Blue’ paint range, and a ‘brand new’ 1950’s design, ‘Zingara’, has been added: a striking line drawing of boats resting at anchor, derived from a John Line collection in the Whitworth archive. Working equally effectively in a classic or contemporary setting, and as flat colour or in pattern, the blue spectrum is vast. As a hue, blue is especially desirable in the northern hemisphere, where the light enhances the blue pigment. Furthermore, blues are known to aid concentration – so, perfect for contemplating your next interior design scheme! David Mottershead, MD of Little Greene, is particularly pleased with the new colours, saying, “Blue is the 42 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM

richest of colours and, historically, the most expensive to produce. In art, blue paint was reserved for depicting royalty, dignitaries and religious figures and still, to this day, holds the same luxurious appeal and hypnotic allure. Many people are fearful of using blue because of its reputation as a cold and masculine colour, but we can show a new way with this carefully edited collection and make blue more useable than ever.” Little Greene’s diverse ‘Blue’ collection is made all the more appealing by the evocative names given to the paints, such as Dock Blue, Moon Shadow, Smalt and Livid. With a broad range that encompasses both lively and moody hues, this collection has something to offer all tastes, personalities and interior schemes.

MARSTON & LANGINGER
COUNTRY LIVING
Renowned creators of glass garden rooms, Marston & Langinger have collaborated with Country Living Magazine to create the Country Living Paint Collection. This range of 25 colours, inspired by country homes and the nature that surrounds them, was devised by the magazine’s decorating and design team.
C
ountry Living’s decorating department took, as a starting point, their favourite shades and those tried-and-tested hues that they’ve returned to time and again for decorating features in the magazine. What they have arrived at is an array of beautiful colours that include both classic shades and contemporary tones, with an emphasis on the gentle, the pale and the subtle – but with a handful of deep and darker hues that can be used as accents on furniture or a feature wall. Rooted in the historic and the natural, these hues will not date and are suited to a wide range of homes. The palette has been carefully constructed such that all of the colours work well together in virtually any combination. For instance, Snow Goose could be paired with Polar Blue to achieve a vintage feel; or Teal with Limestone for something calm and contemporary; or, if you are keen to enliven your room with a bold, crisp contrast, you might instead combine that Limestone with Charcoal. You really have the freedom to get creative. The soft, sophisticated finishes of Marston & Langinger’s paints belie their remarkable durability. These paints are tough. In particular, the exterior paints are widely known in the interiors industry to be extremely hardwearing. And, what’s more, they are easy to apply, allowing you to work with efficiency. These qualities add up to make a product that is ideal for any room inside the house, as well as for outdoor timber and masonry. And you WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 47
MARSTON & LANGINGER
will be glad to know that all of the colours are available in all three tin sizes, and in any of the interior and exterior finishes – Chalky Interior Matt, Interior Eggshell and Exterior Eggshell. With autumn around the corner, you might be considering bringing your interior in line with the season – and injecting some warmth into your home for winter with those fiery autumnal tones. If so, why not test a sample of Barley. This soft yellow works well with earthy shades, such as Cobnut and Twine. The changing seasons and shortening days bring Marston & Langinger’s Country Living Paint Collection to life. With their characteristic depth, the colours take on different qualities under shifting light conditions. It is fascinating to watch them soften and glow as day dissolves into night. And during the lighter hours, their reflective and changeable quality means that they pick up on colours inside and outside your room, enhancing the harmony of the space. All Marston & Langinger paints are environmentally friendly, proudly bearing the Nordic Swan mark – the official Ecolabel in the Nordic states. The Country Living Paint Collection is available at designerpaint.com and can also be ordered from any branch of Brewers. Sample pots are available online and in selected branches.

Rural Scenes Farrow & Ball Celebrates the British Countryside with its Dorset inspired wallpapers.

steemed craftsmen in paint and paper, Farrow & Ball have launched three charming new wallpapers inspired by Dorset – their home since John Farrow and Richard Ball first founded the company in 1946. Featuring hazy grasses, endless hedgerows and pretty blossoms, the designs are evocative of rural scenes. We caught up with Farrow & Ball’s Head of Creative, Charlotte Cosby, to find out more about the new designs and the stories behind them.
FARROW & BALL
Wallpaper: Feather Grass, BP 5105 & 5106, £110 per roll
Why did you look to Dorset for inspiration in this collection? Living and working in Dorset, I am constantly inspired by the beauty of nature and the changing seasons. So I wanted to create a collection that would encapsulate the special influence that the British countryside has on you and translate it into the home.
Wallpaper: Hornbeam, BP 5005, £95 per roll
And why now? Farrow & Ball has always been based in Dorset! We lead increasingly busy lives, so I WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 51 You can find more from Farrow & Ball’s new collection on wallpaperdirect.com
FARROW & BALL wanted to create a collection that would give a soft and peaceful look to the home. People are reprioritising, making more time for friends and family, and our homes are the perfect places to do that. Can you talk us through the new designs? I am really excited about the addition of Feather Grass to our collection. This calming pattern is 140cm high, so it is almost a large-scale border that turns your room into a country meadow. I also love Blostma, which takes its name from the old English word for blossom. Small in scale, it is inspired by the serendipitous moment when petals are caught and carried away by the breeze – just beautiful! And finally, there is Hornbeam, which is an impactful, large-scale design that celebrates Britain’s characteristic country hedgerows. We know you make your wallpaper using Farrow & Ball paints, but how are the new designs made? First, the background colour of the paper is painted with a layer of our environmentally friendly water-based paint, which helps to give the papers a sumptuous and tactile texture. The patterns are then applied by one of two methods: Blostma and Hornbeam are both made by roller block printing, whereas Feather Grass is made by flat bed block printing. Flat bed block printing is the most traditional way to make wallpapers. The chosen paint is applied to the surface of a block etched with a particular design, which is then carefully pressed onto the paper, like a stamp. The block is then raised and, once the paper is moved forward, stamped again to complete the design faultlessly. Roller block printing, on the other hand, is an adaptation of flat bed block printing that is suited to our most intricate creations. A cylinder, with the 52 WALLPAP WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM ERDIRECT.COM 52

design hand-engraved onto it, is coated with paint by a foam roller that passes through a trough of paint. This roller block is then rolled onto the paper to print the pattern. And where is your favourite place in Dorset? I grew up in Dorset, so there are many places close to my heart. But I love Studland Bay. The whole area is so beautiful, with rugged coastlines and endless fields to explore. Picnicking with friends down on a deserted beach while watching the sun go down is probably my favourite thing to do! Find out more at www.farrow-ball.com

s a division of The Romo Group, the Villa Nova studio has its own dedicated team of inhouse designers. The emphasis of the brand is on excellent designs and an eye-catching colour palette. With their strong British heritage, all wallcoverings are designed and made in the UK to the highest quality. Villa Nova’s wallcoverings offer a mix of classic and contemporary designs in an array of colours, which are creative and fashion-driven, but also easy to live with. And what’s more, they are coordinated with Villa Nova’s fabric collections, making it simple and easy to create an interior scheme. Their new Xander wallcoverings are non-woven and vinyl wallcoverings that combine innovative textures and embossed effects with striking abstract patterns and lustrous finishes. “We decided to apply an embossed finish to a selection of the wallcoverings, in order to further enhance the design and add a luxurious, tactile quality,” says Hayley McAfee, VN Head Designer. The collection is presented in easy-touse shades with shimmering hints of metallic hues. The wallcoverings include interpretations of a number of fabric designs from Villa Nova’s newly launched Etta and Xander fabric collections. Trend – Catwalk Metallics This collection takes inspiration from the metallic hues and finishes seen on the fashion catwalks, as well as burnished and tarnished metals, worn textures such as antique glass tiles, and distressed decorative glassware, which display the mottled effects of time. Modern Art Inspired The Etta and Issy designs were originally inspired by the works of Henri Matisse, a French artist renowned for experimenting with spectacular cut out shapes in vibrant colours. Taking their cue from these works of art, the Villa Nova design team experimented with a range of styles 58 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM

to create a unique collection that exudes creativity and originality. “By layering abstract cut-out shapes with added geometric elements, Etta and Issy were given a modern and graphic look, adding to the diversity of the collection,” says Hayley McAfee, VN Head Designer. The beauty of Villa Nova wallcoverings is that they are extremely versatile. They can either be used across all four walls, or bolder designs can be combined with subtle plains and textured vinyl wallcoverings to lend your room a tactile element. Whatever your style, Villa Nova has a selection of fabrics and wallcoverings that will enhance your look.

Sophie Robinson Stylist Superstar We had the pleasure of working with the lovely Sophie Robinson – one time rally driver turned interior designer and stylist supreme on our latest wall trends lookbook for autumn/winter 2015. We’ll be showcasing those trends here soon – watch this space. WD If you weren’t a stylist what job would you do? SR Whilst I was working on an interiors magazine, I was also a weekend rally driver, competing in the British Rally Championship. I wonder had I kept at it, it could have been an alternative career. WD What inspires your own home interiors?
In a rare quiet five minutes, we sat down with Sophie to delve deep into decorating. Here is a taster of how it went...
SR We are in the process of buying a new home in the countryside and I’m just beginning to think about how I will decorate it. It’s a 1920s property set in stunning gardens so I know these two elements will inspire my interior design. I’m not a fan of recreating period interiors, personally but I love taking inspiration from the past. The 1920’s was a very fun and experimental era, so it’s a great starting point.
WD Sophie - what’s the best decorating advice anyone has given you? SR I’ve always been inspired by the style maven Diana Vreeland. This is one of her quotes I love to incorporate in interior design: “A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”

Ask Richard...
Q
Let our resident decorating expert help with your decorating dilemmas. richard@wallpaperdirect.com
I thought all wallpapers were 52cm wide. Why are some of your wallpapers wider than normal? It makes it very difficult to know how much wallpaper you need and it costs more. Cecil , Bangor
A
Q
Lots of suppliers make wider width wallpapers now. This is often because they also appeal to the commercial market and can be used in hotels and restaurants. However, this should not put you off using them. If they are wider, they cover more area and so can be more cost effective to use. Although you need to keep an eye out for our American brands, which can be shorter length rolls. For the UK brands, the length is usually the same. Take a look at the stunning designs in the Prestigious Galleria collection where traditional and contemporary designs are all just that little bit wider in width.
I like the beautiful, bold wallpapers but really don’t think I can put these strong colours on my walls. I think they will be to scary in my small flat. I want to use something fashionable – can you suggest anything? Julie, London
A
Firstly, you should think about a feature wall. It is always a good way to introduce something bold into your home, if you’re not sure. A bold wallpaper on one wall with soft neutral paintwork on the other 3 walls, or something bold just around a fireplace, is a great way to add colour. However, if you really can’t handle the bold colours, you are not alone. Nearly always, the manufacturers create neutral colourways of their stunning designs, as this Alberti design from Arthouse shows. It comes in a stunning black and gold combination, as well as a passionate purple, but also in 62 WALLPAPERDIRECT the subtle, delicate silver white colourway.
