We have seen considerable changes this year at Wallpaperdirect as our customers continue to delight us with their decorating. Through Facebook you have been sending us your pictures of your beautiful results and some of these photographs are featured in a new section at the back of the magazine. So if you haven’t shared your pictures now is the time to do it! We have seen great sales of some quirky fun papers and book designs continue to be popular across a number of wallpaper brands, including our own Albany “Marcus” wallpaper – “A home without books is a body without soul”. Our key trends for the season range from “Flamboyant” for the bold to “Homespun” for that crafty homely feel and “Monochrome” for the more glamorous, daring of decorators – just right for the “Great Gatsby”! Our aim is always to try and make the job of selecting paint and wallpaper easier for you and we have chosen paints to work with many of our schemes. We continue to seek out new designers with boutique wallpaper collections and help to support new ventures including “High House” a Staffordshire University Project producing their ﬁrst printed wallpaper. We are delighted to have launched Wallpaperdirect.com with a USA operation enabling our customers to get a quicker service from us and access to more great wallpapers. We have a lot more exciting things on the horizon which we will continue to deliver to you throughout the year. In celebration of her Coronation, The Queen opened her gardens at Buckingham Palace for a unique event. The Coronation Festival was a celebration of innovation, industry and excellence. Royal Warrant Holders were invited to showcase their products and services and over the four days thousands of visitors, including the Royal Family, were able to visit stands, which were beautifully presented in the grounds. Brewers, who own wallpaperdirect were proud to be part of such an occasion, holding the Royal Warrant for supplying decorating

materials to The Queen. To celebrate the event, Brewers produced 12 exclusive Albany paint colours which are available from all 140 Brewers branches and online at designerpaint.co.uk. The evening saw a fabulous concert, watched by The Queen and many other members of her family with a star studded cast plus extraordinary talent from young people, including the National Youth Orchestra. new look, so don’t be afraid to take that leap of faith into a new bright and bold world.” Clarke & Clarke’s Wild Garden Collection features a diverse range of nine new styles, all united by the bold patterns. ‘Astrid’, for example, has muted tones of linen, mineral taupe and sky blue in ﬂorals, stripes and geometric patterns, while ‘Wild Garden’ takes inspiration from the British countryside and comprises of six hand-drawn patterns using embroidery or block prints. “The inspiration for this collection came from my travels last year to Bali,” Lee tells wallpaperdirect. “The vibrancy and depth of colours were so refreshing that they immediately caught my eye and I thought with some changes would be fabulous for home interiors.”

Lee Clarke’s tips for using bold patterns 1. Bold fabric patterns are a good ﬁnishing point when designing a room, providing the perfect lead to accessories and other interior products. 2. Mixing daring styles with plainer textured fabrics gives a ‘Wow’ factor while the calming plains offset a daring design. 3. Geometric designs can be used generously in an interior scheme, but should be kept simple. 4. Large scale patterns can be teamed easily with crisp, clean block-painted walls or simple textured semi-plain wallpapers to enliven and enrich any room.

Miss Print

Mother and daughter designers at MissPrint shed light on how their designs are inspired

ature often inspires designers. We’ve seen its motifs – leaves, trees, ﬂowers – almost as long as we’ve been using wallpapers, yet Miss Print’s designs are unmistakably theirs. How do they achieve it? “Patterns can be found anywhere,” explains Yvonne Drury from her countryside studio in Essex. “My daughter [fellow designer Rebecca Drury], goes walking in the hills of North Wales and she found patterns not only in the mountains but also in the Ordnance Survey maps she used.” The result is Mountains, a positive, cheerful wallpaper featuring mountains and sunshine. When was the last time wallpaper made you smile? “We are inspired by nature, but also mid-century and Scandinavian design with clean lines – they are graphical.” Yet, of all the talk of geometric patterns and clean lines, what really sets Miss Print apart is the fact every pattern originates from hand-drawn 1

Inspired by the mountains of North Wales

illustrations. “When we were designing Little Trees for the new collection, for example, we didn’t repeat one tree, we drew all of them individually.” The story of Miss Print has been one of rapid successes. Both Yvonne and Becky have a background in textile design, and in 2005 they started making lampshades, cushion covers and fabrics, which still form a major part of their business. In 2007, Miss Print produced its ﬁrst wallpaper collection. There are now two collections. The latest is a whimsical range of designs rooted in nature. Each of the eight patterns come in a range of colours. The names are suggestive: Dewdrops is an isometric design inspired by the morning dew and comes in six colours. Leafy London streets, meanwhile, inspire Garden City, and Nectar, available in ﬁve colours, is abstractly reminiscent of tree bark. It’s a combination of skills, attention to detail, and talent, that led them to write a book called Printed Patterns. This beautifully illustrated book is a guide to developing and printing your own patterns. Back at Miss Print’s studio Rebecca is already at work on the third collection, no doubt wandering in the countryside with a notebook. We can’t wait to see what Miss Print come up with next.

The Albany Story

The Brewer business was founded in 1904 by Clement Brewer and his wife, Mary, in small premises in Cavendish Place, Eastbourne, East Sussex. The original description of the business was “wallpaper factors and blinds”. From the very beginning the shop stocked a number of patterns and Clement, helped by his sons, would make up his own pattern books, stamping each sample with a number and price. By 1920 the number of wallpapers chosen to go into the stock collection had risen to a

hundred or more. Clement and his sons wanted a well-chosen title to give the collection “presence” in the hands and eyes of the customer. He knew of the high-class Albany mansion apartments off Piccadilly in London where the interior decoration was said to be of the highest standard. So the name was selected for the Brewer pattern book collection. Albany collections have been in existence since then and have grown in number in recent years under the management of Melanie Adams. Melanie selects wallpapers from a number of wallpaper manufacturers around the world to present in those collections. Prices range from as little as £8.50 in the “Best Buy” collections up to £35 for the heavyweight Italian and nonwoven luxury wallpapers. In 2012 Albany stepped into new territory with the introduction of “Albany Conversation” a range designed and produced exclusively for the brand, which has been very successful. Customer favourites have been our lovely London Life toile design, book and library patterns and some on trend wood effects. A new exclusive collection is on its way and Melanie promises another unique offer of beautiful wallpapers to join the Albany family. With 143 Brewers branches in the UK, and holders of The Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen and Wallpaperdirect.com being a ﬁrm favourite with decorators, Clement and his sons would be proud of the choice they made choosing Albany– the brand has served the company well!

addition of Dimpse to the colour card completes a second new family of cool, architectural greys suited to minimal living. Bolder accents include St Giles Blue, a clean strong blue originally found in the hall of 17th-century St Giles House at Wimborne St Giles in Dorset. It’s easily contrasted with whites such as Cabbage White, rich Drawing Room Blue or bright Charlotte’s Locks. The cheerful and sunny Yellowcake is inspired by a yellow common in 1960s decoration and equally popular in 21st century homes – perfect for colour blocking. A true pink is also introduced in Nancy’s Blushes, best contrasted with All White or Black Blue. What unites these exciting new additions to Farrow & Ball’s range of 132 eco-friendly paints, however, is the trademark use of only the ﬁnest ingredients and age-old production methods, and the unscrupulous dedication to quality.
