I love the spring, renewal and growth, packed with optimism for the year. Decorating spaces, which have become tired and dull after the wear and tear of Christmas and the winter. So many new collections are launched in the spring and I hope you will enjoy the ones we have brought together to give you inspiration for all your decorating projects. At wallpaperdirect we strive to bring our customers an incredible choice of papers to suit all budgets and we explore design across the world to ensure that we are at the forefront of wallpaper design. We love to work with new designers like, Kerry Cafffyn, to bring exciting concepts to walls, which are both beautiful and fun. Colours are softer with pink really making a statement this year, and blue is definitely the new neutral not the cold shades of the past. Denim has always been in our wardrobes and works with so many colours and our walls are just the same. Printing techniques continue to improve and the effects of metallics, beads and flocks just get better and better. Sanderson’s Woodland Walk is so well drawn with an incredible attention to detail which can be achieved with amazing printing techniques on high quality papers. Having viewed your choices in our rooms to give you a feeling of scale and design use our offer of 3 free A4 samples to give you clarity of texture and colour so that you are confident with your choice. We give you lots of help on the website with “how to” tutorials to ensure you get the perfect finish and it is so rewarding to step back and see the transformation you have achieved. I hope we can give you the confidence to tackle those decorating jobs with excitement and enthusiasm and we are always delighted to see your results on facebook, pinterest or instagram. We regularly have ‘giveaways’ too, so share with us and be proud of your interior design achievements.

1. Woods, 69/12147, £72 per roll. 2. Hand Screen Printing Woods wallpaper. 3. Hummingbirds wooden printing blocks. 4. Hummingbirds, 100/14069, £99 per roll

The now iconic Woods wallpaper pattern was designed by Michael Clarke for Cole & Son in 1958. Originally a screen print produced in the innovative print studio set up in 1949, the Woods wallpaper pattern features bold sketches of trees making a unique forest repeat. This design classic offers a sense of narrative that is universally appealing. Available in a host of beautiful colours, and design options including the addition of pears and stars, the most popular remains the original black and white. Although designed over 50 years ago, this pattern continues to thrive and is used in both commercial projects and residential environments globally. Like many Cole & Son wallpapers this striking design is available to custom colour via the Cole & Son Bespoke Service, who work with customers to produce papers in any colour, so the trees and background can be produced just for you in any colour you desire. Hummingbirds, featuring fluttering birds on delicate foliage, was originally designed in 1772 and remains one of the most beloved and iconic Cole & Son wallpapers to this day. Originally a 27 colour block print finished with hand painted elements, each colour within the design has its own numbered wooden block, which remain in the Cole & Son archive today. Currently produced as a 12 colour surface print, Hummingbirds now sits in the Archive Anthology collection with colourways including jewel toned birds on an indigo ground, pretty pastel birds on delicate ivory, and the classic duck egg, soft blue and cream grounds. One of Cole & Son’s most popular designs, Hummingbirds has universal appeal, being seen in pretty chintzy interiors, mid-century modern style rooms and contemporary industrial spaces. Palm Jungle, seen opposite, is fast becoming a classic Cole & Son design. Originating from the iconic 1950’s Palm wallpaper design, the pattern was added to with a denser foliage in the Contemporary Restyled collection, and offered in a range of colours including emerald green on a charcoal ground, black and gold, blue and white alongside the traditional bright and olive greens. LANDSCAPE PLAINS L

Cole & Son launches a collection of semi plain designs in a host of elegant colours

andscape Plains brings together five semi plain designs in a host of colours with a mix of matte, pearl and metallic finishes. The collection includes Coral, a diminutive reworking of one Cole & Son’s most iconic block prints, the Vermicelli. Cordovan, a smart parchment style semi plain wallpaper. Pebble, a small scale ‘birds egg’ speckle, designed to act as a subtle backdrop to the most fashionable of interiors. Watered Silk, another of Cole & Sons ‘traditions’, dating back over a century. Produced in various ways over the years, this latest version incorporates the clever use of a fine mother-of-pearl printed ottoman texture to create a wonderfully soft shimmering moiré effect. And lastly, one of Cole & Sons’ oldest designs, the Jaspe, historically produced with a random brush effect, and now modernised to create this subtle strie effect. These papers offer a comprehensive and elegant palette to be used independently within a design scheme or to complement any of Cole & Son’s existing wallpaper designs. Produced in over seventy colourings, the Landscape Plains collection offers a range of beautifully balanced hues, which include Cole & Son’s time honoured duck egg, salmon pink, old olive and a striking forest green, alongside a range of pretty neutrals which sit beautifully with Cole & Son’s bolder and more conversational designs from other collections such as Contemporary Restyled and Archive Anthology. The Landscape Plains collection brings a touch of understated elegance to the most serious of spaces.

MORRIS & CO.

The Original Morris & Co. With an eye to key decorating looks, the Morris & Co. design studio keeps the brand on-trend whilst maintaining a unique and unmistakable aesthetic Interest in the remarkable, artistic talent of William Morris has never been greater than in recent years. When William Morris set up his company with five friends in 1861, would they have dared to hope their business would still be thriving in the 21st century? Driven by a revolutionary spirit, they revered the hand-made at a time when Britain was enjoying industrial prowess and dominating global manufacturing. They produced stained glass, ceramic tiles, furniture, embroideries, tapestries, and textiles and wallpaper printed from wood-blocks. A complete interior decorating service was offered through their prestigious London showroom. William Morris was a master patternmaker, a creator of naturalistic designs so enduring that they are still faithfully reproduced in the UK. Today, Morris & Co. take great care to uphold the ethos and aesthetic values of their founder. For Head Designer, Alison Gee, the Archive is a treasure-trove of samples, works on paper, log books and original

The Best-Kept Secret In Interior Design…‘iLiv’ If you haven’t yet heard of iLiv, you will have soon. Hailed as the best kept secret in interior design, its three newest collections are set to cause a stir in Spring/ Summer 2016 owing to iLiv’s inspirational, coordinated ideas and boundary-pushing designs.

22 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM

T

he iLiv story begins in 1987, when a Spanish Entrepreneur named Salvador Monllor arrived in Lancashire, bringing with him luxury fabric and wallpaper designs unlike anything seen before. Slowly and quietly, these unusual designs started to attract attention from further afield and before long the SMD Group was selling exclusive designs all over the world. But that was 1987, and times have changed. Style and luxury alone are no longer enough and so the iLiv concept was born and quickly established itself as the ‘magic secret formula’ for the home makeover. Exquisite designs and deluxe materials are still very much the fabric of the brand, but iLiv’s coordinated, mix and match model meets the needs of modern day lifestyle to make interior design that bit easier.

Wallpaper: Dimensions, Helix, £47.50 per roll

Wallpaper: Country Manor, £34.78 per roll

Now, interior designers and consumers can find their perfect match with inspirational designs. iLiv’s three newest bespoke collections for Spring/ Summer 2016 are a great place to start. The wallpaper is non-woven, pastethe-wall and is designed and printed in the UK. It can be mixed and matched with luxury fabrics for all pieces of the interiors jigsaw. Lovers of olde worlde looks will no doubt fall for the Floral Pavilion collection, which encapsulates the current trend for all things vintage. It features archive florals teamed with beautiful hand drawn digital birds, with matching fabrics on cotton chintz and basket weave base cloths. The five colourways – Antique, Aqua, Cobalt, Ebony and Poppy – have been intelligently designed to work in all rooms of the house.

In contrast to the antique stylings of Floral Pavilion, Dimensions is a sleek collection of contemporary weaves, decorative velvets and, of course, surface print wallpapers. Stylish, sumptuous and three-dimensional, colour palettes include Ink, Ivory, Flint and Mulberry. The third and final new collection for Spring/Summer 2016 is Country Manor. Faded prints and timeless cotton checks and stripes create a time worn antique feel, while the muted palette includes shades of warm, ruby red and grape, through to subtle flint grey and cooler dusk blue.

E

stablished in 1860, Sanderson is one of the most recognised interiors brands worldwide. Granted the Royal Warrant in 1923 (an award which Brewers also proudly holds), Sanderson still supply fabrics, paints and wallpapers to HM Queen Elizabeth II and Royal British Palaces today. Their co-ordinating fabric and wallpaper collections are often inspired by documents from their extensive archive – which is one of the largest in the country and features a wealth of intricate, traditional and innovative designs that date back as far as the Renaissance. Combining this resource with their own highly skilled designers enables Sanderson to create ranges that exude a sophisticated combination of classic and

contemporary, ensuring they never fail to delight! As one of the oldest surviving companies in their field, the Sanderson story spans many years of changing tastes and they have explored a diversity of design styles over their 155 year history. Above all, Sanderson holds a place in our hearts for their timeless, quintessentially English style, inspired by nature, and the WOODLAND WALK collection for spring 2016 is no exception. It is a fabulous execution of exquisitely painted artwork, evoking natural British woodland and wildlife. This is a fresh and invigorating new take on the theme, with a palette of ‘potting shed’ colours creating the perfect setting. The collection embodies the joys that

are associated with one of the nation’s favourite activities. A simple activity, walking can be enjoyed by many generations, and with family, friends or even alone. Being outdoors allows us to disconnect from the constantly whirring technology and busy every day that surrounds us and instead revitalise our senses and well-being. The eight ‘paste the wall’ wallpapers capture beautiful elements of the English countryside, using natural imagery such as ferns, chestnut trees, meadow grasses and animals (to name but a few) to create a strong sense Wallpaper: Fern Gallery 215713, £62 per roll of the natural world within the home. Biophilic interiors are emerging as a key trend due to their ability to create positive mental effects – just looking at a scene of nature has proven ability to inspire relaxation. Two hero designs from the collection worthy of a closer look are WOODLAND CHORUS and WOODLAND TOILE: WOODLAND CHORUS was inspired by an 18th “Just looking century painting Wallpaper: at a scene of of plants and Meadow animals. design was initially painted by hand using watercolours and then digitally printed to achieve the nuances of the artwork and the number of natural colours and tones in the pattern. This depiction of our favourite British birds adds character to your room. WOODLAND TOILE creates an allencompassing woodland experience, depicting a fully bodied British forest. Drawn with pen and pencil, this modern toile shows a high level of detail and is available in five different colourways – including a softly monochromatic ivory and charcoal, an on-trend combination of copper and charcoal and a subtle ivory and neutral. These distinctive wallpapers, all produced in Britain, are accompanied by a range of charming prints, embroideries and natural textural plains, and there’s always a perfect Shade of Sanderson paint to suit each scheme. All elements work harmoniously together to create a sophisticated modern country style. The new WOODLAND WALK collection conjures up nature and brings countryside charm into the home, without any muddy footprints! The British scenery has never looked so beautiful. www.sanderson-uk.com

oft colours can give a feminine, vintage vibe to interiors—think muted ice-cream tones, such as pretty pinks, pale greens and lovely lilacs. The soft colours allow you to use bold and quirky designs in smaller spaces. The washed-out wood effect creates a wonderfully gentle background that is fun without overpowering the room, giving that warm, sun-lit-seaside feel to your home. Traditional patterns, such as the C Brewers & Son Toile, have been reinvigorated for a contemporary style with a new palette of colours, including shades of grey and blue, a delicate shade of lilac, and the soft buttery Butterleigh yellow. After making its mark in 2015, yellow is set to continue to brighten walls throughout SS16, making it a key shade for the sun-bleached trend.

FARROW & BALL

Farrow & Ball

Celebrating 70 Years Farrow & Ball celebrate their 70th year with nine new colours

C

raftsmen in paint and paper, Farrow & Ball are celebrating their 70th year with the launch of nine enticing new paint colours. From soft neutrals and muted pastels, to strong brights and rich dark tones, the new additions enhance Farrow & Ball’s existing colour families and add new accents to its iconic colour palette. We sat down with Charlotte Cosby, Head of Creative at Farrow & Ball, to find out more. Can you talk us through the new colours and the inspiration behind them? Our new colours celebrate the timeless Farrow & Ball look and feel like natural additions to our palette. They encompass a series of new whites, coloured neutrals and uplifting brights, as well as two richer colours that can be used as accents or to give a whole room a dramatic look. The new off-whites—Shadow White and Drop Cloth—are welcome additions to our neutral families, creating a relaxed feel when used together with the everpopular Shaded White. Similarly, the muted pastels of Peignoir and Cromarty have a delicacy that helps to turn your home into a sanctuary from the stresses of modern day living. Our new grey, Worsted, sits between Purbeck Stone and the stronger-toned Mole’s Breath, and provides the perfect background for popping clean accents, such as our bright new teal, Vardo. 36 WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM

Paint: Shadow White, Cromarty, Peignoir and Worsted

Meanwhile, the effervescent Yeabridge Green creates an uplifting interior when paired with a dark shade, such as Stiffkey Blue. Honouring Farrow & Ball’s roots, our new muted drabs can provide a rich backdrop to your home. Salon Drab evokes a classic 19th century feel while remaining the perfect go-to ‘chocolate’ for modern interiors. And Inchyra Blue, which can read more grey, blue or even green depending on the light, offers an alternative to charcoal in super contemporary spaces. Your colour names are always such a unique talking point. Do you have any interesting stories behind these new colours? All our colour names tell a story and

reflect the colour they represent. Worsted, for example, is named after a flat woven fabric made in the Norfolk village of the same name in the UK. Cromarty, a soft muted pastel that conjures images of swirling mists, is named after a Scottish estuary often referenced in the Shipping Forecast. And Drop Cloth, the traditional name for a dust sheet, is named in honour of all the painters and decorators who work with Farrow & Ball paints every day. Farrow & Ball launches new colours very rarely. How do you decide which colours to add to the card? It must be a lengthy process! It certainly is! We only introduce new colours to our card every two to three years and we take a very considered

approach. This involves looking at long-term decorating trends and talking to our colour consultants worldwide to see how tastes are evolving and where there are opportunities to introduce new colours. Once we have identified the colours we would like to add, we work closely with our on-site paint developers to create colours that suit contemporary interiors but also sit within our palette of timeless colours.

Paint: Peignoir, Drop Cloth, Vardo and Salon Drab

And finally, what is your favourite new colour? That’s such a difficult question as my favourite changes almost every week! However, at the moment I’m really drawn to Peignoir, a wonderfully soft shade that proves pink doesn’t have with Farrow & Ball’s to be ultra-feminine. Named after the light inspirational garment worn by ladies colour schemes in the mid-20th century, Peignoir has a romantic feel that is tempered by a big dose of grey, making it very traditional while remaining totally on trend. The colour is an obvious bedroom choice, but it could work in any modern living area. I would love to use it in a kitchen with cabinets painted in Worsted—another of our new colours.

So let the fun begin! Forest Friends, Bear Hugs and Woodland Fairies are beautiful nursery collections. The friendly animals that populate the designs co-ordinate perfectly with your child’s favourite cuddly toys. The gentle palette of colours makes them just right for that first bedroom.

For the 5-9 age group, Arthouse offer a selection of designs suited to children who are beginning to develop hobbies, passions and personalities. The delightful Hall of Fame, Fairytale and Tiffany Stripe wallpapers, with their mist-shrouded castles and quirky cameos of cats and dogs, have a charmingly feminine handcrafted quality. Meanwhile, Starship, Dino Doodles and Cosmos are perfect for the budding adventurer. This collection comes with a full co-ordinating range of plain wallpapers, barcode stripes and denim effect plains, along with various accessories, such as height charts, clocks and room dividers.

LITTLE GREENE

ARCHIVE TRAILS ‘Archive Trails’ from Little Greene: an archive-inspired anthology of English and French trailing wallpaper motifs

O

ver the past decade, Little Greene has established a tradition for sourcing authentic archive wallpaper designs and adapting their patterns and colours to suit 21st century living. As its name suggests, the tenth collection, ‘Archive Trails’, is a celebration of floral trail wallpapers, which have been drawn from a number of highly respected sources, including English Heritage and Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery. Marrying designs from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, this harmonious portfolio of seven wallpapers, in multiple colourways, encapsulates the enduring popularity of trailing floral and bird motifs in surface design. Trailing florals have been the subject of decorative pattern since long before the mechanisation of wallpaper production

and the ensuing fashion for repeating pattern. Traditionally, the scenes depicted in early 18th century interiors were painted by hand—effectively, bespoke murals. In the early 19th century, regimented trellis and smaller, geometric patterns celebrated the new uniformity that could be achieved by machine printing. However, as techniques became more sophisticated towards the middle of the century, some classic rococo and baroque elements—in particular ornate flowers and exotic bird motifs— enjoyed a resurgent popularity. In the careful redrawing of these seven historical designs, ‘Archive Trails’ champions both the discovery and subsequent rediscovery of flamboyant floral wallpaper patterns.

Each design has prescribed its own print techniques to achieve a timeless surface finish of the highest quality. Alongside the ‘Colours Of England’, a palette of coordinating paint shades, this collection can lift the walls of traditional and contemporary homes alike. David Mottershead, MD of Little Greene, enthuses: ‘We have established a tradition for unearthing document designs and breathing new life into them. Oversized florals coupled with exotic birds are traditional and yet very much on-trend right now. Working closely with a team of experts, we have been able to recreate archive fragments in a contemporary yet enduring way and have incorporated colours and scales to suit modern day interiors.’ WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 43

LITTLE GREENE Archive Trails Designs Darwin (c1760) represents one of the Whitworth Art Gallery’s most important recent acquisitions. English in origin, this piece was found intact in a house in Aix-en-Provence, France. The exotic scene imitates a typical 18th century, hand-painted Chinese paper, and the colours interpreted in the ‘Serein’ colourway are true to the original. Gustav (c1875) was found in poor condition in a Jacobean manor in Wimbledon and is estimated to date back to the mid-late 18th century. It bears the hallmarks of a classic block print, but in fact ized some of the flowers “O ve r s e d w it h on the original were l p u o c painted by hand florals ird s are b and superimposed c i t o x e ye t as part of a al an d n o i t i d decorative border. d t ra o n - t re n h c The scale of the u m ve r y pattern is reminiscent w” r i ght n o of a large damask design, but the muted colourways adapted for ‘Archive Trails’ allow this paper to be used extensively, without overpowering a room. China Rose (c1885) is a flamboyant floral taken from a late 19th century French, hand-painted ‘Peking Stripe’ fabric with a distinct Chinese influence. The distressed colours in the leaves and petals are contrasted with the modern-day use of mica and metallic inks in some colourways.

Sakura (c1936) is a pretty trail of matt leaves and delicate blossom originating in France. The surface detail contributes to its layered depth, whilst the colouration retains an elegant informality.

Vine (c1932) unmistakably nods to William Morris, father of the Arts & Crafts movement. An authentic surface print technique has been used to reproduce this contemporary version, with the blue colourway being very close to the original.

Paradise (c1940) is an English Heritageowned, 20th century document that celebrates a rich mix of styles, combining the oriental ho-ho birds of classic Chinoiserie with the colouration of 19th century French paper. This design retains the original’s

oversized repeat and has been reproduced in six stunning colourways. Stitch (c1940) is inspired by embroidered chintz cottons. The use of stippling (dot-work) was popular in embroidery and printing, particularly at a time when block printing was seen as an indication of status. The use of two print colours makes this paper especially easy to coordinate with paint colours and other elements in the room.

esigners Guild always seem to uncover new and original ideas and trends and somehow managed to create a style all their own in the process. This season is no exception as their collections for Spring 2016 celebrate the glamour and anticipation of the golden age of couture mixed with reference to the Palaces and gardens of Versailles. Whilst undoubtedly glamorous in inspiration, these beautiful designs work perfectly in any space, whether traditional, classic or contemporary - a rustic farmhouse or a shabby chic townhouse or even a modern loft. Although well known for its innate and deft use of colour – much of Designers Guild’s work remains in the memory as striking and vibrant combinations of bright colours, large scales and textures. Yet this is only a small part of their expertise. Over half their collection is plain and a huge proportion is neutral. This season, they aim to set the record straight with collections that clearly demonstrate every angle of their knowledge and skills. Each design is hand painted in the Designers Guild creative studio under the expert direction of Tricia Guild OBE, the founder and Creative Director of the company: “Every design is an original, and whilst I am inspired as much by the past as the present, I am not interested

in simply recreating what has been done before, but rather I am fascinated by the idea of making something rather traditional and even ancient - more modern and relevant to how we live today.” Marquisette wallpapers celebrate the softer side of the Designers Guild palette, featuring metallic, beaded and glitter details that are easy to use on every wall in your home. With the largest wallpaper design resource in the UK at their fingertips, the Holden Decor team are well known for creating a wide array of products that take inspiration from around the globe.

New this season from Holden is a contemporary collection of paste-thewall wallpapers that offer a fresh look to the Oriental theme by incorporating

highlights from micas, metallic effects and glitters. Featured in this collection is the bold ‘Acurous’ design, with its montage of flowers and butterflies (see overleaf). Also from Holden, there is a new modern botanical range of paste-the-wall wallpapers that takes inspiration from nature. The ‘Cassara’ design makes use of the latest raised ink effect to highlight certain features within the imagery, such as the stems of the dandelions, WALLPAP ERDIRECT.COM 57

to enhance the natural look and feel of the wallpaper. The striking Liatris design offers a different spin on the feather theme with its soft, floating feather motif and the elegant Rosco is a woodland stripe. Four Walls, a new brand in the family, is announcing its launch with a luxurious collection of textural paste-the-wall wallpapers. Their tactile reliefs, glitters and high-shine metallic effects promise to inject drama into any interior. Shown here is the ‘Mandalla’ design, with a structured lace effect medallion in both raised matt and flat metallic finishes. The scale may be bold, but it is perfectly balanced by the delicacy of the design. In the past, the Opus Italian heavyweight vinyl collections from the Holden stable have been incorporated into Albany, and currently they have a range of these beautiful, quality designs in their stock book Albany Romantica. This collection includes both traditional and contemporary floral designs, together with damasks and a full range of co-ordinating textural plains.

Q A

Let our resident decorating expert help with your decorating dilemmas. richard@wallpaperdirect.com

Do I have to use vinyl wallpaper in the bathroom? I don’t like the shiny effect. Tom, Southampton Vinyl wallpaper is often recommended for bathrooms and kitchens because the vinyl surface is a little more resistant to moisture but it still must not come into direct contact with water, so not around the bath or sink areas. A lot of modern vinyls are very matt, so not shiny. However any wallpaper can be used in a bathroom with care and there are two important factors: firstly, that the bathroom is well ventilated as this helps to keep moisture levels in check and that the walls have been properly prepared and primer/sealed and secondly and perhaps more importantly, that a good quality adhesive is used to stick the wallpaper to the wall. The more firmly the wallpaper is adhered, then the less possibility there is, that moisture can get beneath the wallpaper and cause it to peel away from the wall. We would always recommend a good quality ready-mixed tub adhesive.

I saw wallpaper used on a ceiling, is this difficult to do? Katie, Harrogate This can be a stunning effect and is not difficult, just a bit tricky and it is usually essential to have a friend to help. The actual paper hanging is exactly the same as on a normal vertical wall but obviously you need to safely be able to reach your ceiling height. A second person is needed to hold the other end of the length of paper, while you position the start of the piece, to make sure it is straight. You just need to take care and take your time and the results can be absolutely stunning. Stars on the ceiling are a favourite for the young at heart of any age.

TI62PWALLPAPERDIRECT Use a chalk line to keep the paper straight.
