Chocolate

Chocolate is one of the most harmful foods to your four-legged friend due to carrying a damaging toxin called Theobromine. While humans can easily metabolise this toxin, dogs process it in a much slower way, therefore

allowing it to build up toxic levels in their heart, central nervous system and kidneys. However, the severity of chocolate poisoning is dependent on the type of chocolate and the amount consumed. Dark chocolate and cooking chocolate contain the highest levels of Theobro mine and are, therefore, the most harmful to your dog. A small amount of chocolate will not be fatal to your dog, but this can change depending on the size and breed of your dog.

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages and food products which may contain alcohol can cause a number of issues for your dog. Similarly to the effects on humans, alcohol can cause vomiting and coordination difficulties, but also can lead to other issues such as diarrhoea, breathing difficulties and tremors.

What do I do if my dog has consumed chocolate?

The first step to take if you suspect your dog has consumed chocolate is to contact your vet. It will be helpful to your vet if you can tell them how much chocolate your dog has eaten and what type of chocolate it was. From this, your vet will be able to understand whether or not your dog has eaten a toxic dose or not and what treatment they are likely to need. There is no existing medication for Theobromine, so in most cases your vet will make your dog vomit in order to wash out the stomach. A small amount of chocolate is unlikely to be fatal for your dog, but this does depend on the size and breed of your loyal companion. YOUR PET MAGAZINE | 7

day, when his owner answered the door, Bob, as always, went to the door with her. Whilst at the door, Bob spotted another dog in the field across from his house. Before his owner could get hold of him, Bob dashed over the road for a play. There was no suggestion of an attack, or a fight, or anything other than a game and a bark. Unfortunately for Bob, he brushed past an elderly lady and knocked her down. This was an accident but nevertheless had to be dealt with under the Dangerous Dogs Act. Lovely, gentle Bob was in trouble, and so was his owner, despite the fact that there was no intention by either to break the law. The law is far reaching. If an incident occurs, then the

Police or the Local authority can seize your dog, take it away and put it in kennels until a decision is made about a prosecution. Luckily for Bob, after a visit from the local Dog Liason Officer, it was decided that Bob was to remain at home until the investigation was complete. Bob’s owner had a visit from the Police and interviewed under caution, with her legal representative present – a distressing experience for someone who has never had a brush with the law. Fortunately Bob’s story has a happy ending: a warning from the Police, an apology and an assurance Bob would be kept away from the front door. However, things could so easily have been very different, and for many people they are. In

the course of my work, I have unfortunately dealt with at least four cases where the dog, a much loved family pet, has been destroyed, and the owners fined or given a suspended prison sentence. The law also applies to those who are just walking a dog. It is not a defence to argue that you are not the owner. If you are walking the dog, you are in charge of the dog, so you, along with the owner, will be prosecuted if an incident occurs. Think about your dog. How well do you know it? Have you had it from a puppy or does he/she come from a rescue centre? What does he like? What doesn’t she like? Are there other dogs on his walk he doesn’t like? Is he

better behaved on or off the lead? If you are in any doubt about any aspects of his behaviour, speak to a Canine Behaviour Specialist. If the behaviour cannot be corrected, it can be identified and measures can be put in place to avoid it. For example, don’t take your dog to places where he can become distressed or agitated. If you are unsure of the dog’s behaviour, don’t take the dog out. Remember, YOU are responsible for what he does, even if you

A decision will be made there about the seriousness of the case and which court should deal with it. Cases where serious injury has occurred will be heard in front of a Judge at the Crown Court. Take advice on whether you have a defence and how you can mitigate your sentence. Legal Aid may be available to you. Talk to a Solicitor, it is your legal right. A guilty plea, or a finding of guilt after trial, will result in court costs and can result in a fine or a prison sentence for you. For your dog, a destruction order is inevitable. However, this order can be contingent on certain restrictions being put in place. For

example, the order could depend on your dog being muzzled or on a lead in public places. This is an order of the court and breach of it WILL result in the destruction of your dog. Having a dog is an amazing thing. It is fun and rewarding, but it is also a responsibility not to be taken lightly. A dog in the wrong hands is a lethal weapon. Don’t let those hands be yours. Love him, look after him keep him, and you, and those around you safe from harm and prosecution. He’s your pet, your friend, a member of your family and, in the eyes of the law, your legal responsibility. t was while she was looking for a cattery for her own rescue cat, Norman, that Abi Purser first spotted a gap in the market. “After researching countless ‘luxury’ catteries on the internet, I made a shortlist and spent a weekend visiting them. Online they appeared to offer lovely

services but frustratingly, in reality, the accommodation was far smaller and not as clean as I was hoping for,” said Abi. “We were looking forward to a luxury family break so the thought of shutting Norman away in a small cage for two weeks whilst we were all enjoying 5 star luxury didn’t seem fair.” It was several months later, when she was looking at her options to return to work after having a baby, that the idea of creating her own cat hotel came back to her. Studies have shown that if you put a cat in an unfamiliar environment, they do not miss or look for reassurance from their owner as other animals might. Although arguably an efficient test of how attached an animal is to its owner, as a cat owner myself, I struggle to come to terms with this cold-hearted finding. Aren’t cats simply too curious and territorial to exhibit the archetypical ‘attachment’ behaviours? The absence of their owners is bottom of their priority list, yes, but not un-noticed. Unlike other house pets, in particular dogs, cats are incredibly independent, but this doesn’t mean they idolise their owners any less. There are actually a number of ways in which your cat subtly shows you just how much he/ she loves you. First, you may find that your kitty has made a habit out of greeting you at the door - they’re excited to see you. I would put money on the fact that as soon as I set foot in the front door, tiny thundering footsteps will soon follow, down the stairs and right to my side. You may also find that your cat follows you around like a shadow. Shower time becomes a guilt-ridden struggle, with an always meowing fur ball sat outside the door, and carrying anything down the stairs becomes a cat obstacle deathtrap. But, we should consider ourselves lucky - our cats just wants to be around us. Do you ever find yourself in an

awkward, intense stare-off with your cat? A lot people believe that if a cat stares directly into your eyes, they’re becoming agitated and could well be plotting the many ways he/she could kill you. However, as with humans, staring can also be a very loving and affectionate behaviour. It’s unusual for a cat to make eye contact and they only do this with people they like and feel comfortable with, so consider yourself lucky! As well as the occasional stare, you may find that your cat quite often carries out long, slow blinks. It is said that cats kiss with their eyes, so if your kitty gives you a slow blink, you’ve just received a kitty kiss it’s like cat poetry! Believe it or not, cats actually do not communicate with each other by meowing - they only use this form of communication with humans. It’s their way of telling you they want something; be it a stroke, food, some attention or to go outside. But it’s also their way of communicating their fondness of you. Similarly, purring is another way in which you can tell your cat is enjoying your company. Purring slows down your cat’s heart rate, so if your cat is purring away on your lap, he/she is very relaxed. Because cats are natural born hunters, they can be very vulnerable and see a lot of things as a potential threat. Just like with humans, planning is needed before you start the breeding process to give you a greater chance at breeding success. Whether it be for selling or for keeping as a pet, here are some top tips to consider if you’re thinking about breeding your rabbits PREPARING TO BREED YOUR RABBITS

Decide why you want to breed your rabbits Although breeding rabbits may seem relatively simple, it is a huge responsibility for you to take on – something that takes a lot of time, commitment and patience. Before you start breeding your rabbits, you need to decide why you want to do so – are you breeding them to keep as pets or to sell? If you don’t have the time or think you will end up sending the rabbits to a shelter, then you should rethink your plans, because after all, rabbits are living, breathing creatures who deserve to be loved. Research rabbit breeds There is a very wide variety of rabbit breeds – over 50 to be precise, and each of these breeds carry very specific characteristics. It’s crucial that you do your research in order to understand which type of rabbit will best suit your breeding needs. Choose the right rabbit to breed 28 | YOUR PET MAGAZINE

The breed of rabbit you choose may depend on a number of factors – availability, price or preference. However, what you plan on doing with the babies can also affect your choices. Some people breed rabbits for their own leisure while some breed purely to sell. If you are planning on selling the rabbits, mixing breeds is a bad idea as it reduces the value and lessens the quality. Pedigree rabbits will be worth the most, however a rabbit is not considered a pedigree unless there is same-breed blood going back for four generations.

If you suspect your doe is pregnant, it’s always advisable to check with your vet. The duration of the doe’s pregnancy depends on the size and breed, however it tends to last between 28 and 33 days. If your doe is not pregnant, you are safe to breed her again almost immediately.

TAKING CARE OF THE PREGNANT DOE Provide extra bedding Around day 20 of your doe’s pregnancy, she will want to build a nest for her kits, so a nesting box will need to be put in her hutch. This should consist of soft hay, straw or wood shavings. If your doe starts to pull out her fur, don’t panic, as this is most probably to use as more bedding. Your rabbit’s nesting box should be at least 18” by 10” by 10” and needs to have at least a 6” opening for easy access to and from her babies. Give the doe some peace and quiet A pregnant mother will need a quiet, stress free environment while carrying her babies. Expecting the kits You should be expecting your doe to give birth 30 to 33 days after breeding, so make sure you’re prepared for the kits. If you’re lucky enough to catch your doe giving birth, leave her to it. However it’s likely this would have all been done and cleaned up by the time you wake up in the morning as rabbit kits tend to be born before dawn. Kits sound like baby birds, so you may be able to tell your doe has given birth by listening out for cheeping. Don’t touch the hutch at this stage as the doe will want to clean it to insure no predators can smell the blood or other scents.

TAKING CARE YOUR DOE AND LITTER AFTER BIRTH Seek veterinary care: It may be a good idea for you to take your doe to a vet following

So, it’s now our job as countryside residents to protect and preserve our friendly visitors. One way to achieve this is to transform our gardens in to critter-comfy zones, and here’s how you can do so...

PROVIDE WATER If there’s one garden feature sure to attract wildlife at an overwhelming speed, it’s water. Water lillies are another common type of pond plant, adding colour and beauty to your pond, especially in the summer months. However,

similarly to oxygenators, water lillies have a habit of multiplying, so start off with a small amount as it is easy for plants like this to swamp a small pond. Floating plants can also be beneficial as they incorporate shading into your pond, therefore reducing the risk of problems such as algae. Overall, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to seek professional advice when choosing the right plants to use in your fishpond as some plants may be more beneficial to certain breeds of fish. Water plants do not require a large amount of attention, but it would be beneficial to separate any crowded or overgrown plants

every couple of years. When the warm months arrive, you may find that maintaining water quality becomes more difficult, especially as the summer heat will cause the pond water to evaporate. You may find that you have to top up the water every so often, so installing a waterfall or fountain can be hugely beneficial. This will allow you to run water at intervals, therefore making it easier to monitor. Additionally, when putting your pond plants into place, covering the plant pots with gravel will prevent the fish from disturbing the soil, meaning there is no chance of discolouring the water.

Do They Make Good House Pets?

Micro pigs, otherwise known as ‘miniature’ or ‘teacup’ pigs seem to be the latest fashion craze, with more and more being purchased to keep as house pets

lthough originally bred for medical research and experiments, Britain has fallen in love and many people believe that miniature pigs should be raised in the same way as cats and dogs. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Micro pigs come under the category of ‘farmed animals’ and therefore are subject to the same regulations as regular farmed livestock. Pennywell Farm has been one of Britain’s most appreciated miniature pig breeders since 1992. After 20 years of selecting pigs to breed depending on their temperament, size, colour and character, Pennywell Farm is home to many gentle and calm-natured micro pigs. We spoke to Pennywell Farm’s pig expert, Chris Murray, to find out more information on these little creatures and the characteristics they carry.

MICRO PIGS

Are micro pigs easy to care for? They are very easy pets to care for as they don’t require loads of exercise. They sleep most of the day and their needs are modest. It’s good to give them stimulation by doing things such as tasks or games, taking them for a walk, grooming them regularly and teaching them tricks - all good practise in animal enrichment and ensuring a happy contented hog! Being miniature means they also don’t eat a great deal, they just need somewhere clean, dry, draught free and warm to live. Having said that they need feeding ideally twice or even three times a day and they do prefer a routine. The quantity must be the same every day and they mustn’t be allowed to get too heavy or fat otherwise they will end up with the same conditions as overweight humans. What is the average life expectancy of a micro pig? I always say 8 years but we have had them older. The oldest Pennywell pig we had was 14

years old! He was called Pumba and he was a real sweetie of a boar - I was very sad when he went to piggy heaven! There have been stories about people mistakenly purchasing regular farm pigs rather than miniature pigs how can you tell if you have actually purchased a miniature pig? It’s pretty distressing how people have had the Pigs do not “eat like pigs” wool pulled or “pig out.” They over their eyes prefer to eat slowly and it’s really and savor their food best if you visit a breeder. Ask to see all their breeding stock, ask what age they are and also ask for references so you can speak to previous purchasers. Find out where that breeder got their foundation stock from! They need a place that is light, bright, warm, dry and draught free. Ideally they like to have a grass paddock (large lawn) to wander over as well as a pigsty with a concrete floor where they will happily stay when you are not playing with them on the lawn or in your house. The concrete needs to be insulated underneath so it doesn’t chill your pig.

are very affectionate. I’ve had several customers who have come back for more and several who’s pigs go on their morning run, cycle ride and swim! Other customers have their pigs on their laps or beside them on the sofa watching television while others have them outdoors all the time. It really depends on what you are looking for in a pet. I always recommend that customers have an outdoor pigsty and run for their pig so that, it they go away, they can easily have a place to pop their pet and know it’s happy. Finally, do you have any other advice for people considering purchasing a micro pig?

Visit Pennywell and have a good look at all of our animals and also buy from Pennywell! I would also advise you to have fun - if you are having fun with your pig then your pig is having fun with you. We train the piglets from a very young age to be easy to handle and consequently when they leave Pennywell they are the friendliest miniature pigs you could buy! Lastly, remember that once a pig has been adopted by you they are yours for life, just like having children they are your responsibility.
