DURBAN NORTH TO BALLITO

L

AST week’s flooding in Durban caused chaos up and down the coast. In Ballito the panic was palpable, fuelled mostly by posts from concerned citizens on social media platforms.

The undercover parking areas at the Lifestyle Centre were completely full to avoid the hail damage that never came. In the ensuing panic, some schools sent children home, adding to the chaos on the roads – children from less privileged circumstances were left to walk home in the driving rain. Where was the sense in this? Surely children would be far safer in their classrooms than on the roads in bad weather? Our local private medical rescue personnel were all despatched to assist victims of the drama unfolding down the road, so if a similar situation had occurred here, we would have been in trouble. As a public service to Ballito we gathered as much official information as we could from emergency services and local municipal sources and gave regular upto-the-minute information to listeners on Radio Life & Style in an attempt to quell the misinformation that was doing the rounds and, to a degree,

this seemed to work. In a world of enormous choice, I am really pleased at how many people are listening to our little radio station in Ballito. Interestingly, we now have a significant and growing listenership outside the Ballito area who listen to us online. Because our FM range is limited, we stream our signal digitally via the internet and so we can be heard anywhere in the world. With smartphones now the weapon of choice for most people on the planet, the phone has replaced the radio as a means of listening to stations and with our radio stream using very little data, this is fast becoming the preferred way to listen to us. And by linking the phone to the in-car entertainment system via Bluetooth or USB cable, we become an extra channel option on your car radio. Radio Life & Style offers a mix of well-curated music loved by audiences that used to enjoy what LM Radio, Radio 5 and other stations used to play. We’ve just taken it further by incorporating the latest worldwide hits too – plus news, views and interviews of local interest to make it more topical. With the recent arrival of high speed fibre optic connectivity, our radio station now has the capacity to stream even higher quality audio as well as video of visually appealing radio features. This has effectively

enabled us to blur the lines between radio and TV, creating a hybrid that will allow you to see what is being discussed on air - the people, the food, the property developments, the apps, the faces, the fashion and events, the surf, the cars, the sport the possibilities are endless! Of course, from a commercial point of view, we now have an even more exciting options for advertisers too. We have already started rolling out these ideas and the results have been excellent. Linking it all to our social media pages, it literally becomes a total media solution… on air, online and in print too! Effectively this gives Ballito something that very few other towns can lay claim to – a local radio station with global appeal and streaming video images, both live and recorded integrated seamlessly onto social media platforms worldwide. We are really excited to be carrying the Voice of Ballito loudly and proudly across the country and throughout the world. If you haven’t already done so, you can download our Life&Style FM radio apps free from the App Store or Play Store on your smartphone and carry us with you to keep you tuned to The Voice of Ballito coming to you from out of the blue!

STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

S

UMMER is almost here. Time to kick our butts into shape. Whether you’ve signed up for a 12 week challenge, joined the gym, taken up running, boxing, CrossFit, Pilates… whatever; you’ll know that after the first session, you’re often so stiff, even texting on your phone is painful!

Enter delayed onset muscle soreness, better known as DOMS. It is the result of micro trauma in the muscles and surrounding connective tissues, which causes inflammation. It begins several hours afterward, and peaks (on average) around two days after exercise. It sounds terrible but DOMS is actually a good thing. The tiny tears signal the immune system to release white blood cells to start the repair process, building up muscles stronger than before. What You Can Do About It When you're sore, you want to do something about it, right? The following nutrients can help you create the right internal environment for muscle recovery; • Collagen: The specific amino acids, primarily glycine and proline help repair tissue, lessen inflammation, shortens recovery after exercise and helps with sports related injuries. Supplementation with collagen peptides showed a reduction of risk for injuries on muscle, tendons, and ligaments in athletes. Also the glycine and arginine content in collagen aids athletic performance and help maintain and restore muscle mass. • L-Glutamine works by moving nitrogen atoms to

other parts of the body that needs them. And to build muscles, there should be a balance of positive nitrogen. As you exercise, nitrogen rushes to muscle damage to stimulate repair. The lack of L-Glutamine in the body slows down recovery. Unfortunately, for those that work out regularly, the body cannot meet the demand for this nutrient fast enough so an L-Glutamine supplement is advised. • Astaxanthin provides excellent recovery from exercise. This powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant is indicated for recovery of muscles, better endurance, enhanced strength and improved energy levels. • Omega 3: Aside from being a powerful natural anti-inflammatory, Omega-3 fats have also been shown to augment blood flow to muscles during exercise, decrease muscle soreness by 35%, reduce swelling, and increase range of motion after intense exercise. • Protein is arguably the most important nutrient to take immediately after your workout. Your muscles have been broken down and therefore need repairing and rebuilding. Consuming a good quality protein powder in the form of a shake is not only an efficient and fast-digesting way to get essential amino acids to your muscles quickly, but is the perfect way to also stimulate muscle protein synthesis, recovery and growth. • Magnesium helps relax muscles, speeds up recovery, improves muscle function, maintains electrolyte balance and reduces fatigue.

• MSM: Aside from supporting overall joint health, MSM aids in shortterm recovery by reducing inflammatory immune responses and swelling. MSM also increases glutathione levels, a primary antioxidant compound recognized by trainers, athletes and scientific experts for its ability to enhance exercise recovery. It even significantly decreases muscle cell damage up to 24 hours after exercise. • Cherries: are a proven anti-inflammatory, besides reducing your uric acid level. Science shows they help with maladies like arthritis and gout, as well as general muscle soreness. One study involving a group of long distance runners found tart cherry juice to significantly reduce post-exertion pain. • Curcumin: Besides giving turmeric its vibrant yellow-orange colour, curcumin effectively relieves pain, increases mobility and reduces inflammation. Final Point These nutrients need to be part of a holistic approach when it comes to recovering optimally. Make sure you are exercising responsibly (not overdoing it!), eating a nutritious diet, sleeping enough, managing your stress levels and resting adequately between workouts. And remember that exercise should be enjoyable in order for it to be sustainable and beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing.

He same women you see strutting their amazing bodies in lacy bras and panties and teeny string bikinis also frequently pull on boxing gloves and step into the ring. That's right, some of the top Victoria's Secret models incorporate boxing into their workout routines. If that's not enough to convince you to add boxing to your regimen, these eight betcha-didn't-know benefits will have you itching to start sparring. BOXING IS A TOTAL-BODY WORKOUT A two-for-one cardio and strength workout, boxing targets the entire body, says Jessica Matthews, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. “In addition to boosting strength and cardiorespiratory fitness, boxing improves a number of skill-related parameters of fitness, including balance, coordination, reactivity, and agility,” she says.

however, your primary moves come from your upper half, making it a great cross-training option when you want to bust a running or cycling rut, or knock out some cardio that won't tax your legs too much. [Tweet this tip!] BOXING KEEPS IMPROVING YOUR BODY It’s easy for your fitness routine to become, well, routine, but boxing will keep you on your toes. Unlike running on the treadmill, there’s always something new to learn. “Boxing is a neverending fitness challenge,” says Olajide, who trains Victoria’s Secret models Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes. “No boxer who has ever gloved up has mastered all aspects of boxing, so when given a knowledgeable boxing trainer, it will never get boring." And that means your muscles will never start yawning, so your body will continue improving too.

BOXING FLATTENS YOUR BELLY Want a serious six-pack? Skip the sit-ups and get in the ring instead. “Boxing is extremely taxing on the core,” Valverde says. “Your hips need to rotate in order to get full extension and deliver a more powerful blow.” And since you're burning more calories than you would lying on the floor for isolated abs work, you'll be ready to show off that flat belly sooner.

BOXING INCINERATES CALORIES—FAST Perhaps the ultimate high-intensity interval training workout, most boxing rounds alternate between periods of maximum effort and active recovery. “It is both an aerobic and an anaerobic workout,” says Antonio Valverde, a boxing instructor and owner of Elite City Fitness in New York City. That means as the workout intensity increases, your body requires

more energy than aerobic metabolism can provide, and suddenly you’re also in anaerobic training territory— the type of exercise that builds strength, speed, and power, and boosts your metabolism. So, compared to running at a steady clip, boxing burns more calories in less time.

BOXING IS UPPER-BODY CARDIO Most cardio focuses on the lower body. With boxing,

BOXING SAFELY PUSHES YOUR LIMITS Forget tire flipping and box jumping—boxing can be a safer (yet just as effective and demanding) alternative to some of the riskier heart-pounding workouts out there. “Your body moves exactly the way it was intended to move, just at elevated speeds,” Olajide says. “Plus you can train with the same intensity and purpose of a competitive boxer in your home or gym. That's not necessarily so for other fitness endeavors."

For WOMEN, With LOVE

L

IFE & STYLE was lucky enough to receive an invitation from The Delish Sisters - the Dolphin Coast’s very own celebrity chef sisters - to attend the first in what will hopefully be a series of exciting and exclusive wellness events for women.

The “Love Me” event, held in the beautiful setting of Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock on Sunday 15 October, brought together five dynamic young women to host a morning of fitness, food, and inspiration coordinated by Andene Horne (local health coach and social media star best known by the title of “Healthy Girl With A Sweet Tooth”). The morning kicked off with a powerful high intensity interval training (HIIT) class conducted by personal trainer extraordinaire Jade Upton of Unjaded Fitness… The burn was definitely felt! After a glass of a refreshing homemade ice tea with a twist from the Delish Sisters it was time to unwind with talented yoga instructor Megan Robert taking ladies through a beautiful heart-focused yoga class. Then it was on to a champagne breakfast with Simonsig providing the bubbles and the Delish Sisters serving up scrumptious and nutritious breakie treats. Finally, “Healthy Girl” Andene tied it all together, giving attendees an inspiring talk on loving oneself and the importance of having a healthy relationship with food. A dash of Musgrave Gin only added to the occasion amidst the beautiful floral table settings from the flower experts at Love Laugh and, needless to say, all ladies who attended left feeling uplifted, energized and motivated for the week to come. We can’t wait for the next event - hope to see you there! OVERCOMING ANXIETY PUBLIC TALK

Tuesday 24 October 6.30pm -7.45pm at Ballito Public Library, Compensation Beach Road, Ballito Anxiety and stress are increasingly common problems for people in our busy, modern world. Meditation is an effective way to deal with negative states of mind and create a sense of peace and mental freedom. Through Buddhist meditation and mindfulness techniques we learn to control our mind, rather than allowing our mind to control us. By accepting our painful feelings rather than being panicked by them, we can keep a calm mind in all situations. At this PUBLIC TALK, with Buddhist monk Kelsang Phuntsog, discover how to have a happy, anxiety-free life. Everyone is welcome! CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR

GLENDA THOMPSON

H

I Everyone,

Thank you so much for your feedback from the last Consumer Column! I have had so many people asking that we continue with Style Me’s Daniyel Berry’s style tips so have happily included more great ideas from Dan for you to follow. I’ve also had many mails about contracts and the renewal thereof, so I’m devoting the first part of the column to contract issues. With regards to the CPA and the automatic-renewal clause that deals with contracts in South Africa that is often included in fixed-term contracts, and refers to the instant renewal of one’s contract upon reaching its expiry date: Both the supplier and the consumer are able to cancel a fixedterm contract. Consumers can do so by giving the supplier 20 business days’ notice IN WRITING, or any other recorded form. This is something that one must remember specifically with regards to gym contracts. A supplier is obliged to give the consumer written notification of the pending expiry of a fixed term contract, and notice must be given 40 to 80 business days before the expiry of the contract. Here’s an interesting piece of advice regarding phone contracts. If your phone contract is coming up for renewal and you don’t need a new phone with your contract upgrade, you need to actually go in to see your provider and let them know that you won’t be getting a new phone. The monthly billing amount will be reduced dramatically. However if you assume that this will happen, and don’t actually tell your service provider, you will continue being billed for your phone. So many people make the mistake of signing up for contracts online

and then half way through, they regret doing so but don’t know how to cancel, and get in a panic. I have had so many people telling me stories of how they continue being billed for something they don’t use. . IPhone’s are pretty straight forward as you cancel through the IStore. If you have an Android phone, you cancel your subscription with Google Play store. Very simple and no need to panic! STYLE TIPS - Learn to Accessorize Thanks so much to Daniyel Berry for her great styling advice. With regards to accessories, Daniyel says l “After consulting with many clients I have found that this is a big downfall for many people. I often think of Accessories as your icing and sprinkles on a chocolate cake. How much more tantalizing does that cake look with decorations? It makes you want to eat it :) Yes, we need to add the sprinkles to our outfits! It makes the world of difference. I challenge you to accessorize every day for a week. This could be in the form of a beautiful handbag, scarf, necklace, earrings or even a beautiful pair of shoes. LESS IS MORE How many of us say “I have 10 nothing to wear”? Yet, we have a wardrobe FULL of clothing. Ok, so it’s the 80/20 Rule. If you really analyse it, you are probably wearing 20% of your wardrobe and 80% is just hiding the fabulous items. We all think MORE is MORE but in actual fact MORE is LESS. The more you have the less you have to wear. We need to apply the LESS is MORE principal where we build more with fewer items. . Start investing in key items & then accessorize these items. Add one or two new trends and you’re on your way! Contact Daniyel on daniyel@ styleme.co.za for more advice.

BELINDA BOLTE 1-2-1 PERSONAL PUPPY AND DOG TRAINING

SEPARATION ANXIETY In our previous edition I briefly touched on Separation Anxiety as a reason for escape behaviour. In this edition we are going to chat about this very real stressful challenge. You come home from work to a spinning, jumping whirlwind of energy. Your dog follows you into your living room, where you find that they have chewed on your favourite pair of shoes, your blinds have been torn down and there are scratch bite marks on your window pane. Your neighbour comes by to tell you that, once again, your dog has been driving the neighbourhood crazy by howling and barking while you were away. Is this scenario familiar? Your dog may be suffering from the very real dog separation anxiety. In nature, dogs are almost never away from their pack. It is therefore our job to help make this unnatural situation less stressful! We are going to go over five steps to help ease separation anxiety in your dog: 1. Before you leave the house, take your dog for a walk. Start your day by taking your dog for a brisk 20min to 45min walk. To make the walk even more rigorous, use a dog backpack with extra weight in it. Then reward your dog's calmsubmissive energy with food and water. Some dogs may need to rest before eating, but all dogs can benefit from hydration. The idea is to leave your dog in a quiet, resting mode while you are away. 2. No touch, no talk, no eye contact. [Cesar Milan’s favourite saying] Make your departure a non-event when you are about to leave for the day or when you return. This way, you are communicating to your dog that the time apart is no big deal. Depending on the severity of the dog anxiety, you may need to practice the rule for five minutes or up to an hour before you leave and when you get back. 3. Say goodbye to your dog long before you leave. If you are having trouble practicing "no touch, no talk, no eye contact"? Take

a moment to share affection and tell your dog that you will miss them way before you actually leave. Keep in mind that this display is for you, not your dog! Your dog won't have their feelings hurt if you didn't say goodbye. 4. Stay calm and assertive! When you are ready to go to work, leave those guilty, nervous, and concerned feelings behind. Instead, let your dog know that everything is going to be okay by projecting a calm confidence. A calm and assertive leader can ease separation anxiety in dogs. 5. Start out small by leaving your dog alone for just five minutes. Leave your dog alone for five minutes, then extend the time to twenty minutes, then an hour. Continue to increase the time you spend away until you can leave for a full eight hours without any more dog Challenges!

Tip for the week: If after applying the above steps you are still struggling then Leaving your TV on or playing soft calming music in the area which your dog rests may assist to reduce separation anxiety. There are also a number of products on the market you can use to assist you in correcting the challenging behaviour. Chat to your Vet or Trainer and they can assist you with the correction.

The New Hops is a Winner

I

T has always had one of the best locations in Ballito – almost on the beach with unbeatable views of the breakers and plenty of parking too. Hops Ballito has long been a favourite with locals and visitors alike but over the past few years it got a bit tired and lost some of its lustre and with the many new hospitality offerings in town, it was obviously in need of a makeover.

Owner Pierre van Zyl is an interesting man. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Pierre is one of those rare breed of entrepreneurs who has taken a shot at various ventures, some of which have struck out but most have yielded handsome returns. He started the Hops Ballito about thirteen years ago, taking over the site that had been a popular Keg franchise and transforming it. After he moved on to other ventures, the Hops Ballito continued under the supervision of a manager and ultimately began its slow decline. Pierre re-established direct control of the business recently and decided to give the place the transformation it so desperately needed to reclaim its place as a

premiere destination of choice on the Dolphin Coast. The renovation has opened up the venue, maximising the views and creating comfortable areas for social interaction. The décor is modern with clean lines creating easy flow. It’s lighter, brighter and more sophisticated incorporating natural elements to bring it all together. The rest rooms have been relocated and are spotless with quality fittings and fixtures. The new Hops is already pulling the crowds. With free Wi-Fi and network zones it’s a great option for the casual business meeting and with a safe outdoor play area for kids, it’s family friendly too. The menu is simple and the food here is excellent – pub grub at its best! For the beer lover Hops Ballito has introduced Tank Beer – the freshest beer you’ll find, tankered in direct from the brewery and pumped into a large brass tank in the pub ready to dispense ice cold to the appreciative gathering! If you haven’t visited the new Hops yet, you’re in for a treat – we’ll probably see you there!

PEUGEOT 2008 SUV WITH GRIP CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

The S90’s svelte appearance really is something to behold. Longer, wider and lower than competitors, the sleek design is actually reminiscent of a sports coupe rather than a large sedan, and when seen on the road imparts immediate presence and commands attention. Space is plentiful and the play on light which enters the cabin is the epitome of Swedish design ethos. Real textures like open-pore wood, aluminium, leather and glass abound, ensuring a sense of absolute class and sophistication. The seats, which are of course exceptionally comfortable, have been designed around the human spine and are covered in high-quality leather in all models. The front seats also feature a unique impact-absorbing mechanism which is designed to collapse in the event of the vehicle becoming airborne during a crash, in order to minimise the potential for spinal injuries. The S90 features minimal arrays of buttons, especially on the dashboard. The 9-inch high definition Sensus Connect interface is responsible for most in-car functions, from entertainment and telephony to settings, climate control and navigation. Fitted as standard with ten high-quality speakers, entertainment in the new Volvo S90 is always a premium experience. Internet connectivity also features as standard, with the S90 able to tap into a smart device’s network connection or an external Wi-Fi network which enables apps like TuneIn internet radio, connected service booking and downloadable vehicle updates. Other USB-based content including photos and HD videos can also be viewed on the Sensus Connect screen, provided the vehicle is stationary and in Park. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both available in the optional Smartphone Integration package. Dramatically increasing the inherent value of all S90 derivatives – and moving one step closer towards fully-autonomous cars – is the fact that all S90 derivatives are semi-autonomous up to 130 km/h as standard. Working hand-in-hand, Adaptive Cruise Control and Pilot Assist enhance the S90’s driveability and allow drivers to hand over control to the car in varying degrees of engagement. The Volvo S90 is available for a test drive now at CMH Volvo Umhlanga 6 Sunset Cres, Umhlanga Ridge. Phone 031 571 2600

HBR PROJECTS: Developers with a Solid Reputation.

H

BR PROJECTS, the developers of the popular Manor Estates in Ballito have been publishing a very bold promise: “Built on time or it’s free!” This follows the completion and complete sell out of the first 4 apartment blocks of 24 units. This was

achieved in only eight months, which is 4 months ahead of schedule.

“Future investors can be assured that their investments are safe with us” says developer Horst Keil who is the H in HBR Projects. “We have gained a reputation for delivering quality finishes on time and on budget. We only started building in February this year and have already commenced construction of the next 24 apartments in phase 2. We are ready to put the roofs on to this next phase.” “While Manor Gardens is reasonably priced and is a fantastic stepping stone into secure estate living at R1.48 million, it should not be considered an inferior build in any way. The units are completed to meticulous standards with soft closing doors, acoustic windows, Ceasarstone counter tops, Kohler taps, full bodied porcelain tiles, fibre optic connectivity and UPS battery backup.” “We are convinced that Manor Estates will alleviate the critical shortage of affordable accommodation in Ballito,” says Keil. “The location of this fantastic development is one of the biggest positives as is only three kilometres from the major Ballito shopping centres. It is seven minutes from Alberlito Hospital, 20 minutes from King Shaka International Airport and a short drive from schools and churches” For more details on this exciting development contact Ryan Hunt on 082 786 4170, ryan@manorestates.co.za
