underestimate the power of fun.

Last week I was invited to a performance of a pantomime by a group of residents of a retirement village in Sandton called San Sereno. I wasn’t expecting much – in fact, if the truth be told, I was secretly dreading it. The only reason I agreed to be there was that my dear mother, Di, had written and directed the show and as she has always been my number one fan, it was time for a little payback. My mom had moved to San Sereno shortly after the passing of my dad and initially she had not been very happy there. She was not in the best of health and, at first, she had no friends there so she must have been very lonely too. But last year she was persuaded by the resident psychologist to use her theatrical background to produce a pantomime for the residents and, reluctantly she agreed. This was a turning point for her and through the audition and rehearsal process she made some good friends and the show was, by all accounts a great success. It was a first for the retirement village and the community hall was packed to capacity with an audience that responded to the popular tunes of a bygone age and the cleverly written lines with gusto. But now, the genie was out of

the bottle…they wanted more! The show that I was invited to was loosely based on the story of Cinderella but the script had been tuned to incorporate celebrity scandal, anecdotes and current social events and the overall effect was hilarious. The average age of the cast was over eighty but they created magic with a sense of fun and imagination that transcended the bounds of age and time and, for a while, we were all transported to a very happy place. It was Bette Davis who was reported to have said that old age is not for sissies and I think she would have been thrilled by the performance of Cinderella by the San Sereno Players that I was lucky enough to have caught last week. It gave me a better

THE PARLOTONES

COMING TO BALLITO SOON

W

HEN The Parlotones met in 1998 in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, little did they know that they would go on to write one of the greatest Rock ‘n Roll stories South Africa had ever seen. Their hard working, humble attitude, dedication and commitment to their music has seen them enjoy a career that has spanned over 15 years, achieved multi-platinum selling status and accumulated numerous awards.

In 2003, The Parlotones self-released their first album, the raw Indie tinged ‘Episoda’, an album which quickly compared their sound to bands like The Smiths and Coldplay. This Indie sound was the first of its kind in South Africa and quickly labelled The Parlotones as one of the freshest sounding bands on the scene, paving the way for the album which would cement their success and catapult them to the stars they are today. Their debut studio album ‘RadioControlledRobot’ spawned the hits ‘Here Comes the Man’, ‘Colourful,’ ‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’, ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Overexposed’. The Single ‘Beautiful’ was used in the Irish FujiFilm Ad, which exposed the band to their first International audience and secured them a worldwide licensing deal with the International division of Universal Music, covering the territories of France, Japan, Germany, Holland, Northern Ireland and the UK. The Parlotones are consistently known for their ground-breaking attitude and genre crunching attention given to their music videos, making them leaders in visual audio expression and winning them a multitude of awards. Their first major music video release for ‘Dragonflies & Astronauts’ went on to win an award for ‘Best Music Video’ at the MK Awards . During the release of ‘Journey through The Shadows’, The Parlotones spent a year touring abroad in the US and their homeland, spreading their musical message. In 2013, The Parlotones released their fourth studio album ‘Stand like Giants’ on Virgin Atlantic flight VS602 from Johannesburg to London. Long standing friends of Sir Richard Branson, this was the world’s first ‘on board’ album launch. The album included the critically acclaimed single ‘Sleepwalker’ featuring S.A Hip Hop star Khuli Chana. In 2015, The Parlotones released their first Independent album ‘Antiques and Artefacts’ and embarked on nationwide tours to promote the album. With the band's usual welcoming energy and style, ‘Antiques & Artefacts’ will now take this quartet of friends on an altogether new journey.

Catch The Parlotones Live in Ballito in the third of the Marriott Ballito Beats concert series on Sunday afternoon 17th September at Sugar Rush Park. Tickets are available at www.webtickets.co.za or at any Pick n Pay ticket counter. We’ll see you there!

LIFESTYLE CENTRE INTRODUCES NEW BRANDS TO BALLITO

H

ot on the heels of the recent launch of Chateau Gateaux Patisserie, Lifestyle Centre is gearing up for the introduction of more new brands to Ballito. 16 August saw the launch of the first Melissa’s store in KZN, while 24 August is the opening day of Sportman’s Warehouse, ToyZone, and a new generation Dis-Chem store.

At the same time, the underground parking reopens, with brand new lifts and a wide stairwell leading up to Dis-Chem. A new highlevel roof covering and new non-slip tiling has been completed to for a more pleasant shopping experience during rainy or windy weather, while still ensuring that the natural light and outdoor ambiance is maintained in this area. Customers can also look forward to bigger and better Hair 4 U and Scarla May offerings in this same area. The Radio Life & Style 88.0fm studio in the centre has also undergone an exciting exterior renovation and continues to broadcast the hugely popular voice of Ballito from this location on both FM and digital platforms throughout the region and across the world. “After months of construction and redevelopment, our new centre is starting to take shape.” said co-owner Bruce Rencken. “We are grateful to the Ballito community who have been so supportive during this time of immense disruption. The excitement about the new offerings at Lifestyle has been unbelievable, and it is great to start delivering on our promises.” To date Absolute Pets, Cranberries, Origins, Home

Etc. and Gerald Wells Hair Professionals have relocated, while Gerald Wells Barber, White Summer and Chateau Gateaux and Melissa’s have all launched very successfully. The introduction, Sportman’s Warehouse, ToyZone and Dis-Chem will further bolster the Lifestyle Centre offering. Melissa’s The Food Store, located between the Woolworths and Home Etc. in Lifestyle Centre, will incorporate both a food store and coffee shop. Sportsman’s Warehouse, Southern Africa's biggest sports equipment and sportswear store, will offer the Ballito market a wide selection of sports products, apparel and equipment. ToyZone, a specialist mega toy store guaranteed to keep the kids happy, will take pride of place next to the new DisChem. “Our vision is to provide everyday convenience and simplicity of shopping, and to celebrate family and life the Ballito way,” said Rencken. With Baby City, Lupa, Mythos, Salsa, Mo’s Noodles, Holiday and The Market still to come, it appears that Lifestyle Centre is well on the road to doing just this.

H

BR PROJECTS is a local property development company that brings together the talents and experience of three formidable players who collectively cover all of the bases essential to the successful development and marketing of desirable properties in this rapidly developing region.

Horst Keil has a long legacy of successful property sales and developments behind him and maintains disciplined financial control to ensure efficiency at every turn. Rohan Eagar has an engineering background and moved from mining into property development when he fell in love with the KZN North Coast. Rohan has built seriously up market homes in Zimbali, Simbithi, Brettenwood and Dunkirk. Top architect Bernard Lagesse is the third member of the team and is very well versed in every aspect of the greater Ballito region. He grew up here and is a product of Umhlali Primary School. He has worked hard to establish a reputation as one of the foremost architects in his field. Horst, Rohan and Bernard have recently worked on a successful development project at Palm Lakes Estate and they are set to continue to roll out the winning formula. Together they have consolidated their combined expertise under the HBR Projects banner and are currently rolling out the Manor Estates project that has proven extremely popular with the market. The first phase has already sold out and work is progressing quickly to meet the demand for the subsequent phases that offer excellent value in the current local market. HBR Projects has developed a strong working relationship with Ryan Hunt who has become synonymous with the success of the sales at Manor Estates. Ryan will be launching a specialist Estate agency, Hunt Properties, shortly to continue to excite the market with offerings from the HBR Projects group. CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, PART 2:

BELINDA BOLTE 1-2-1 PERSONAL PUPPY AND DOG TRAINING

D

o your research to find the right dog for both you and your family.

In our last edition we looked at how Dogs are divided by KUSA into the following groups: Gundogs, Hounds, Herders, Toys, Terriers, Working dogs, and Utility. I have added on an 8th Group Rescue Dogs. In this edition we are going to look at Herders, Toys and Terriers. Herders: Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog and Corgi. Herders are spirited dogs with plenty of energy and enjoy the outdoors. They need an active family who are keen on getting involved in active dog sports like agility, obedience, fly ball or sheep herding trials. Dogs that fall into the Herding group are known for their ability to work with livestock. They have plenty of energy and stamina to work all day in the field. Many of the dogs in this group still work in their original capacities today and still possess the qualities which made them outstanding in their field. While these traits are very sought after on the farm, they may be difficult to deal with in a suburban setting. Herding small children, cyclist, and other pets and possibly even nipping at the ankles of guests, which may be a challenge for pet owners. However when mental and physical needs are channelled correctly then a herding breed can make an outstanding companion and devoted, affectionate family friend. These are highly intelligent breeds, who are easy to train and learn new things very quickly. They have a brilliant work ethic. Toys: Chihuahua, Havanese, Italian Greyhound, Miniature Pinscher, Bichon Frise, Papillion, Yorkshire terrier. The Toy group includes many of the smaller breeds. Although most group members were originally bred as companion dogs, some were bred

as working dogs to control pests or as watchdogs to alert their owners when intruders approached. Due to the latter you may need to learn to handle some extra barking. They respond well to training and enjoy exercise, especially walks to the local park. Dogs in the Toy group are a good choice as companions for the elderly, but their small size doesn’t necessarily make them the right dogs for very young children. Toy breeds have coats that require a high level of care, so make sure you research before you select a breed. They are also known for their longevity. Terriers: Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Fox Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, Bull Terrier, Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier. Terriers were originally bred as ‘jacks of all trades’. They were vermin catchers, hunters, guard dogs, farm dogs and family companions. They are dogs with high energy levels, inquisitive characters and a high prey drive. Terriers are headstrong and need early socialisation and a positive training approach. Without a good foundation, Terriers can become aggressive towards other dogs and may develop behaviour problems. Tip for the week: Always ask permission before you, your child, or your dog approaches an unfamiliar dog. Be kind and understanding many dogs need space to stay healthy and safe. It’s important to remain calm and apply 3 simple rules when you do meet a dog for the first time, the Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan captures it perfectly: No Touch No Talk No Eye Contact. When the dog is relaxed in your presence this would be the moment to interact and give the dog attention while it is in the calm state. You will be promoting calm behaviour.

T

hanks to our August sponsor: Rest Assured and Cloud Nine for anchoring the show this month! They really are the Kings and Queens of a good night’s sleep and you can find them at the following retailers around the North Coast: Bed Boyz, Hirsch’s and Sleep King. All of them have fantastic SPRING specials on their beds, so … spring down to one of those stores this weekend to find the bed of your dreams!

Thank you all, for your continued support and for all your consumer related enquiries, I have had such a variety of requests and queries, and have summarized some of them in this week’s column. THE CPA – PROTECTING PROPERTY BUYERS.

I’ve had mails from a few people complaining that the property they purchased did not meet up to their expectations and they felt that the agent withheld certain information from them. On the property front, “Voestoots” used to protect sellers from the onerous responsibility of providing comprehensive information to the buyer regarding the condition of a property. Under the CPA the estate agent will be responsible for making detailed enquiries regarding the condition of the property and to disclose those defects that they are aware of. If not, buyers will have legal recourse and be able to claim compensation. Many consumers do not fully understand the legal jargon involved in contracts and agreements. They also don’t feel comfortable at the point of purchase to ask questions or make changes, and often sign something with little or no changes made – to their detriment.

Under the CPA, estate agents will be obliged to use plain and understandable language in their agreements and ensure that consumers have a clear understanding of the legal implications before signing. SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE ASKED WHAT THEY SHOULD DO WITH REGARD TO SIMPLE PLUMBING ISSUES…. SO LET’S … GO DOWN THE DRAIN! I have spoken to the experts and this is what they came up with on common problems... Blocked drains. If it is the sink that is blocked, use a household plunger. It really depends on the extent of the blockage and what has caused the blockage. More often than not, you will require a plumber as there is a reason for the blockage (incorrect fall, sand, roots, collapsed or broken pipes, building rubble.) This will require drain rods, high pressure jetting and possibly CCTV footage in order to resolve the problem. PLUMBING MAINTENANCE TIPS. A lot of people complain about low pressure or even no pressure in certain parts of the house. First thing to do: check out all the filters and strainers for any sand or sediment build up. It may also be time to fit a new pressure control valve if the cleaning doesn’t do the trick. The average person with a bit of DIY savvy can do it themselves. Please keep those queries coming through! Contact me on gjthomo@gmail.com Remember that if you have any complicated queries – especially those bordering on the legal side – go straight to the Consumer Council – KZN Consumer Complaints Hotline number: 0800 333 667 which is a free service to the public.

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDE

WAYS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ON A BUDGET

STEPHANIE WILLS - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

I

don’t know about you, but it feels as if this winter EVERYONE I know has been sick; and I mean really sick! Superbugs are real and antibiotic resistance is rampant… So how do we get better or boost our immune systems if we can’t afford bucket loads of supplements? Here’s how:

1. SUNSHINE: Take off your clothes and expose your skin (without sunscreen) to the sun for 1015mins. Both UV light itself and the vitamin D produced when your skin is exposed to it have potent antimicrobial effects. While vitamin D increases production of naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides that destroy the cell walls of viruses and bacteria, UV light also increases blood levels of infection-destroying lymphocytes (white blood cells). 2. GROUNDING: Go outside, barefoot, and walk. Grounding to the earth changes your physiology immediately. The more you ground, the more you can benefit because you are at your most natural electrical state when connected to the earth. Your immune system functions optimally when your body has an adequate supply of electrons, which are easily and naturally obtained by barefoot contact with the earth. Studies have shown that earthing or grounding improves blood viscosity, heart rate variability, inflammation, cortisol dynamics, sleep, autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance, and reduces effects of stress. Yes, really. 3. WATER: Do not underestimate the health benefits of drinking pure, natural spring water. Water helps to carry oxygen to your cells, which results in properly functioning systems. It also works in removing toxins from the body, so drinking more water could help prevent toxins from building up and having a negative impact on your immune system. You can also take a cold glass of water to the next level by adding lemon. The health benefits of lemon water are plentiful. Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, which is known to boost the immune system, prevent disease, fight the common cold and protect cells. Water with lemon juice squeezed in may also help digestion and aid in detoxification. 4. GENTLE EXERCISE: When you exercise regularly, you help your immune system by providing a boost to the cells in your body that are assigned to attack bacteria. These cells appear to work slower in people who don't exercise than in those that do. As a result, if you exercise, your immune system is better equipped to handle bacteria that could cause you to become sick. Please note however, that too much exercise can actually cause your immune system to weaken. It's one of the reasons that you may feel very rundown and weak if you're training for a marathon or doing a lot of exercise during a short window of time. In order to avoid having this effect on your immune system, make sure that you get enough rest for your body. The good news though, is that you don't have to be a super athlete to boost your immune system through exercise. All you need to do is walk for a half hour every day or find time to visit the the gym a few times every week. 5. EAT FERMENTED FOODS: These include unpasteurized sauerkraut, miso, kimchee, kombucha, good quality yogurt or kefir. This is how they help keep you healthy; •Unprocessed fermented foods boost the immune

system by increasing antibodies that fight infectious intestinal inflammation. In addition, collagen disease. supports healthy skin and can reduce the appearance •The flora in living cultured foods form a “living of cellulite. SHED THAT SPREAD 12 Week Body Transformation Challenge

FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS

S

HED THAT SPREAD is the brain child of Kate Koen. She was tired of body transformations promising the world and never delivering. So she spent a vast amount of time planning and preparing her challenge, turning it into the most comprehensive program that you will find.

The 12 week challenge starts off with a weigh in day where your base line results or starting point is determined. Photographs are taken and the intricacies of the challenge are explained in detail. The participants are given their first 4 week eating plan and a food diary to track their meals and beverage intake. During the 12 week period, participants are given full access to all boxing conditioning and fitness classes presented by Ringside. Along with the boxing classes each participant on the challenge selects two mandatory weight training sessions a week.

This allows the participants to obtain the benefits of both regular resistance training coupled with the fitness and cardiovascular benefits of the functional training presented in the boxing conditioning classes. After the initial 4 weeks the eating plan is amended according to the information provided in the food diaries. A second assessment is done where weight, height and body fat percentage are compared to the measurements taken at the initial weigh in. The training regimes, in terms of the weight training sessions are also changed at this point. After another four weeks the process is repeated again with another assessment day and the participants are given their final four week eating plan. At the conclusion of the 12 weeks the participants are assessed for the final time and the final “after” photos are taken. The results are sent off

to independent judges and the overall winners and runners up are announced at a cocktail evening and prize giving function. FEEL GOOD STORIES AND IDEAS

FEEL YOUR SKIN SMILE

Kim Martin and Stephen Wilson were married in style recently in a gorgeous setting at Maroupi just outside Ballito. It was an absolute dream of a wedding with everyone looking perfect and absolutely thrilled to be part of this special occasion. Of course, no one could outshine the bride on this special day and the pics by Leigh Jameson captured the memories for all to treasure. Kate Armitage and her sister Megan Patterson from Kate Style Salon did the hair and make-up for Kim and her bridesmaids. The flowers by Cindy of Love Laugh were magnificent, and Jacqui Rey and her team from Foodmatters presented an absolutely fabulous spread. It was a really happy occasion and we are delighted to share some of the pics with you. We wish Kim and Stephen a lifetime of love, laughter, joy and happiness together.

deals with wrinkles & scars!

NSTEAD of a solid laser beam, the Palomar Icon delivers multiple micro-beams, leaving the surrounding cells undamaged, and ready for repair. When the collagen is heated to 65 degrees C, collagen is stimulated to remodel and produce new collagen over the next 100 days. The full result of the treatment continues and will be best noted after 6 months. Icon treatment is used for skin tightening, wrinkle-, stretchmarks- and scar reduction.

Frances @ Lasersure is willing to advise about healthy, natural supplements to add “life & well-being to your days”

Local anaesthetic is applied to reduce discomfort. After the treatment, the skin may be red and swollen leaving it feeling “hot” Three to six treatments are required, at 3-4-week intervals. There should only be bronzing and a rough appearance & feel to the skin. (Blisters, crusting and /or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation should not occur) The use of sun protection with a minimum of SPF50+, applied three times a day, is not negotiable. Sun exposure should be avoided at all cost, to maximize the results. The use of retinol, other products, and conditions, which may be contra-indicated, will be determined during a thorough medical history questionnaire. delights CHEESY STUFFED LEEKS

The idea for these delicious little Leek Parcels came from a new Greek cookbook that we recently got, we changed the recipe up a bit and put on our signature Delish twist. Despite the long, daunting looking recipe these are actually surprisingly easy to make, they look beautiful and they are really delicious! These are a crowd pleaser as a side dish or a main for vegetarians, not to mention the ultimate when it comes to indulgent comfort food. Go ahead, treat yourselves!

T

HERE has been a buzz of excitement following the opening of Chateau Gateaux in at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito. Radio Life & Style has enjoyed welcoming the brand to Ballito and spreading the word far and wide – and the response has been awesome.

Chateau Gateaux has already become a popular venue for locals and visitors alike to get together for a great cup of coffee and a delectable treat at a surprisingly modest price. Chateau Gateaux is famous for its delectable cakes, and confectionery that you can enjoy at the instore coffee shop or buy to take away and enjoy wherever you choose. Their products have an amazing storage life so you can stock up and always have a special treat ready to serve for those unexpected moments. Visit Chateau Gateaux at the Lifestyle Centre to experience a real treat.

400g Feta 1 Cup Grated Parmesan 1 ½ Cups Grated White Cheddar 1 handful of finely chopped flat leaf parsley (save some to sprinkle on top) ¼ of a whole Nutmeg finely grated (or ½ a teaspoon of ground Nutmeg) 6 large leeks 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil Pepper

FOR THE SAUCE: 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil 2 Red Onions sliced 2 Lemons (zest of 1 and juice of both) 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 L fresh Cream

METHOD: 1. Chop one of your leeks up and sauté with 1T of olive oil until soft, set aside.

2. Get a large pot of water onto the stove to boil and turn your oven onto 180 degrees Celsius.

3. With the remaining leeks, slice off the very green ends and the bottom where the little roots come out. Then slice down the length of the leek and peel off the first three layers, these will be your cheesy parcel ‘wrappers’.

N W

4. Take your leek shells and pop them into your now boiling water, blanch them for about 3 minutes and then take them out and into a colander to drain off any excess water. Set these aside.

5. Now for the cheesy goodness…into a mixing bowl crumble the feta and add the parmesan, sautéed leeks, white cheddar, flat leaf parsley, nutmeg and a few cracks of black pepper. Mix this up well with your hands until the cheesy mixture is well combined.

ROCKING

THE BLUES THIS SEPTEMBER

T

hirteen years on and still going strong, The Durban International Blues Festival will again take place at The Plant, Station Drive Precinct, Durban following its successful change of venue and capacity turn out last year. Tickets for this two day event, Fri 01 Sep and Sat 02 Sep will go on sale at Computicket shortly.

This year’s line-up includes firm favourites as well as international guest artists, Charlie Love and Dan Patlansky and his band.

6. Take 1 tsp of your mixture and put it into the bottom left hand corner of your rectangular blanched leek, fold over into a tringle shape, making sure that each side is closed and your cheesy mixture sealed in (like you’d fold a samosa) until you get to the end of the leek, trim off any excess, and then onto the next one.

7. Once all leek parcels are folded, you can start on the sauce. Sautee the onions and garlic in the olive oil, once softened and a light brown, add the cream, lemon juice and zest, let it bubble away on a medium heat for about 5 minutes, season and ladle into the base of a casserole dish or a cast iron pan.

8. Pop your beautiful little pale green leek parcels on top of the sauce, and bake in the oven for about 10 minutes at 180, then put the grill on to get them nice and golden! 9. Sprinkle with some chopped flat leaf parsley and INDULGE!!!!!

Nestled within The Litchi Orchard in Salt Rock, we offer a unique breakfast menu branching away from the standard eggs on toast, and a lunch harvest table laden with fresh, wholesome dishes using recipes and seasonal ingredients that we are experimenting with or happen to be inspired by! MOTORING

MOST EXPENSIVE CARS EVER SOLD

E

XPENSIVE CARS. Always a hot topic. But we’re not talking about modern exotics here, because nothing built in the last decade can hold a candle to the most valuable machinery ever sold.

A McLaren P1 LM, which was the priciest of all new cars when the last of six sold for around $3.7-million (R49.2-million) earlier this year, wouldn’t even rank in the top 100 most expensive cars of all time. Like comic books, baseball cards, coins and fine wine, some cars appreciate with age, and out of the top five most expensive listed below, the youngest is 53-years old. You might also notice a trend here: Not only are four of the five vehicles Ferraris, four are historic race cars proving that motorsport provenance, especially which of the Italian variety, boosts value. We must also add an asterisk to this list as only vehicles sold at auction, where selling prices are made public, qualify. It’s quite possible some Arabian Sheikh has spent much, much more on a solitary piece of precious metal for his private collection, but we’ll never know because the cash exchanged hands behind closed doors.

1. 1962 FERRARI 250 GTO

Price: $38 115 000 (R507million) Ferrari dominated GT racing between 1962 and 1964 with its V12-powered 250 GTO Berlinetta, and this particular example was driven by famed Frenchman Jo Schlesser among others. It was the 19th of only 39 units made, and has changed hands only five times in its life. The previous owner held it for 49 years, and the other three raced it in the ‘60s. Though this example’s racing history was relatively lacklustre, and was crashed numerous times (including one incident which took the life of Henri Orellier), it smashed the previous record for the most expensive car when it sold at an American auction in 2014. It was expected, however, to sell for up to $70-million at the time.

2. 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport

$35 673 848 (R474-million) When this car crossed a French auction block last year it became the most expensive car sold in Europe. Only four were made between 1957 and ‘58, and this one was driven to victory by Stirling Moss at the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix. Its 4-litre V12 made just under 300kW (stratospheric at the time) and pushed it to a top speed of around 300km/h down the Le Mans Mulsanne straight. Although unconfirmed, it’s believed this car’s new owner is Barcelona soccer star Lionel Messi.

3. 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R

$29 700 000 (R395-million) It’s unclear exactly how many W196 racers were made, but we do know that this example, which raced to wins at the 1954 German and Swiss Grands Prix by five-time world champion Juan Fangio, is the only one not currently owned by Mercedes itself or in the hands of an institutional museum. At the time of its sale in 2013 it was the most expensive car ever sold at auction, and was notable for its unrestored “fresh-from-the-track” condition.

4. 1956 Ferrari 290 MM

$28 050 000 (R373-million) Though Fangio indeed drove this car at the 1956 Mille Miglia (an Italian endurance race it was named for), he only managed fourth place. Still, with that name attached to its pedigree, this 290 MM managed to slot itself into the top five most expensive cars when it sold at a US auction in 2015. Fangio may have failed to score a win with this particular car, but American ace Masten Gregory and Italian Luigi Musso won the Buenos Aires 1000km in it in 1957.

5. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 N.A.R.T. Spider

#Peugeot3008SUV

$27 500 000 (R366-million) American mail-order businessman Eddie Smith bought this car new in 1967, making it the only genuine “one owner” car in this list when it sold in 2013. During its life Smith resisted sales to Steve McQueen, Ralph Lauren and racing driver Phil Hill, but after his death in 2007 his son opted to give it a new home rather than keep it stored behind lock and key as it had been for the past six years. The N.A.R.T. (which stands for North American Racing Team) was regularly driven while Eddie Sr was alive, and Eddie Jr donated some of the sale’s proceeds to charity. Only 10 N.A.R.T Spiders were made.

VESPA REDESIGNS THE ICONIC SEI GIORNI SCOOTER FROM THE 50’S Vespa’s new special edition named ‘sei giorni’, which translates to ‘six days’, celebrates the original Vespa sport scooter that won nine gold medals at the international six days of Varese in 1951. Based on today’s generation Vespa ‘GTS’ scooters, the limited ‘Sei Giorni’ harks back to the Italianmanufacturer’s iconic style. Like its 66-yearold predecessor, it features a unique lowmounted headlamp located on the front fender, special handlebars, plus the same colour scheme, and details inspired by the winning scooter. the Vespa ‘Sei Giorni’ comes outfitted with a seat upholstered in fine, black leather with contrast stitching, and it comes with the same olive green livery as the sport scooter from the 1950’s. A set of blacked-out rims, exhaust,

and details including a round number holding plate, and iconic ‘six’ badges make this scooter truly stand-out from its trusted counterparts. a small plaque with the model’s serial number, plus a USB port located inside the luggage compartment, ABS, and LED lights complete the ‘Sei Giorni’s’ refinements.

Riders can customize their scooter by adding a windshield, front and rear luggage racks, a 42-liter bag, anti-theft devices, a thermal covering, or even a tom tom ‘VIO’ scooter GPS unit. the ‘six days’ is powered by a 300 cc euro4-compliant liquid cooled four-stroke engine that can create 21 hp, and 22 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm, while it also comes with an electric starter, a twistand-go transmission, and an 8.5-liter fuel tank as standard.
