DURBAN NORTH TO BALLITO

Editor Dave Charles

F

IFTY years ago Stanley Kubrick surprised and confused the world with a movie called 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of the main protagonists of which was an artificially intelligent computer called Hal. Of course, back then, the idea of such a phenomenon was way out there in the realm of science fantasy. I remember watching the film with my dad and being thoroughly bored. It was long and rambling and that talking computer was too much…I mean… who would believe such

a thing was even remotely possible? But hey, it was just a movie, and in that kind of world of suspended belief, anything was possible. I remember how John Wayne took on what seemed like an entire First Nation’s army and defeat it single handed. Back then they were called Injuns and they were never much of a match for the Cowboys. Dick van Dyke flew to Vulgaria in a flying car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to sort out what today would probably be described as a sort of paedophile called the Child Catcher… Walt Disney had created and entire subculture of animated characters that were more plausible than a talking computer. Mickey mouse had style and Donald Duck had a real attitude. You could believe in those guys, but a talking computer…a voice in a box…oh, come on! Which is why I find it so strange that I should now be going for a walk every morning with a voice in a box. She’s lady who I have never met, but I downloaded her from the internet a couple of weeks back and since then we have become quite close. I must admit that she sounds a bit brassy and I don’t really think she’s entirely sincere when she tells me what a good job I am doing as I blunder along in the pale light of the early morning, but I don’t want to disappoint her so I dutifully follow her instructions until the session is over. That’s when she sounds really impressed and I feel a little embarrassed that I didn’t walk further or faster. Okay, reading back over the last few lines, this is beginning to sound a little creepy so let me put it in perspective. My beloved, Sue, has become very keen on running as a sport C and, as a result, she has become fitter than Mshe has ever been. This is Y wonderful, but I have never shared that desire. CM I think that this is possibly a reaction to MYthose less than joyful times CY bashing along a bush track in army boots CMY with rifle and webbing in the blazing heat when KI was still in my formative years. A rather spectacular motorcycle accident and much repair work

further compounded my reticence to add to the damage already inflicted. But, as the good book says: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? So, in a spirit of détente, I took my first tenuous steps on the road to Damascus last year with the acquisition of some running shoes and a plan to hit the boardwalk in style. It was a disaster. I completely overdid it and had to substitute my running regime for biokinetic and chiropractic intervention until I could move again – it took a while. That’s how I discovered my new friend. I went online to look for a more scientific way to approach the problem and…there she was. A walking app designed to get you moving without overdoing things. It’s early days yet, but we hit the road on a daily basis with music in the background and an encouraging voice in a box and…so far so good! Stanley Kubrick was a genius. 018 has certainly started with a

‘BANG’ in South Africa and the property market has reacted in a dramatic way. Our former president’s resignation has propelled investor confidence back into positive territory with the Rand gaining a lot of ground in the latter half of February.

Richard Grey, CEO of Harcourts South Africa assured local as well as international investors, that: “There is no doubt that the political climate in South Africa and Government related activities have influenced our economy. Local investors as well as foreign investors, both buyers and sellers, have been gun shy in certain markets and at times apprehensive to invest, especially in the residential rental market. There is a good chance we’ll see increased activity in flat markets and a renewed interest from buyers and sellers alike. It is important to note though that there are still many political and fiscal challenges and by no means are we immediately

saved by the new political regime. However, there is the optimism of a renewed commitment to growth and stability that South Africans so desperately need.” SHOULD I INVEST IN PROPERTY TODAY? “The best time to buy a home is always 5 years ago” – Ray Brown. With the general sentiment of “wait and see” following the broad political statements of land appropriation without compensation, uncertainty has gripped the South African property market. However in reality radical political statements rarely play out in real life the way it was said. Baron Rothschild, an 18th century British nobleman and member of the Rothschild banking family, is credited with saying that “the time to buy is when there’s fear in the market .” He should know. Rothschild made a fortune buying in the panic that followed the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon.

Y message this month is two-fold. FIRSTLY, having just attended both the matric farewell functions at Ashton Ballito and Ashton Benoni in the past two weeks, one realises that the year is already in its second quarter. It is also this time of the year that we realise that the students are ready to take on the next leg of their journey. I was in awe of the transformation, of not only our Grace Hall in Ballito on Saturday night, but also our students who changed from school uniform into enchanting ball gowns and the boys all very dapper in their attire. The Enchanted Theme was executed magnificently by Mrs Sam de Vries and Mrs Bronwyn Gow and their Form 4 Dance Committee. I was extremely proud to have the privilege of seeing these ladies and gentlemen at their dance, the function that every student dreams of. During the April holiday, many of our matric students participated in their very last Sports Tour at St Dunstan’s in Gauteng. After many hours over the Easter weekend on the sports fields, they returned and spent three days on the MSC Sinfonia Matric Cruise, which was just reward. With all these wonderful memories that they can treasure forever, the full focus now will only be on academics as the staff prepare the matrics for their matric trials, a mere four months away.

• Grade 0000 - G SECONDLY, ASHTON HOSTED EMMA SADLEIR – South Africa’s leading legal expert on Social Media who addressed our students from Grade 7 to Matric, as well as parents and staff. Her warning in a nutshell “Digital Content is Dangerous”. I was shocked as was many of our parents, students and staff about the scary realities of social media and content and that we all freely give information for these operating companies and their associates to read. This applies to all forms of “free” services like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram and many we are not even aware of. . In return you are giving them all your information and this is available to them – every photograph, every message. Once you have liked or shared a post, you have published it and you are a part of it. Nothing is for free. Her philosophy is – if you are not willing to share something on a Billboard, don’t share it at all. Interesting facts that Emma noted was: *a school Code of Conduct signed by the parents and students of any school is a legally binding document and is upheld in a Court of Law; *it is the responsibility of the parent to know on which social media platforms children are participating in; *Youth who are aged 14 and over can be found guilty and prosecuted of an offence on any social media platform I recommend that children read Emma Sadleir’s book Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones. We have to educate our children on the pitfalls of social media.

THE TRAIN CRASH OF 2002 “SEAWEED” STEVE HONEYSETT

F

ebruary the 5th 2002 started off as normal for many KwaDukuza residents – it was just like any another day – but that was soon to change dramatically.

As lifeguards we had just come out of the busy December/ January holiday season and we were welcoming a few quiet days before the next holiday period. We started the day with some routine training and then, after opening the swimming area for the day, we cleaned our first aid room and checked over out medical trauma bags making them ready for the next emergency. At around 15h30, we were chatting about the day’s events when we received a radio message calling us to assist with an emergency that none of us had thought we would ever encounter - a train had crashed at Groutville. As any emergency worker knows, the element of panic has to be brought under control and I remember, as we ran around with our adrenalin pumping, that I was thinking about what we might be faced with when we arrived on scene. Carnage is not something we want to experience in our lifetime, but having been an operational medic during military service, and having worked as a lifeguard, I guess I was a little more prepared than most other people to deal with the horror. Carnage it was, a passenger train had collided with a stationery goods train and

there were multiple injuries in the first few train carriages. The scene when we arrived was unbelievable, with emergency personnel running around making space for ambulances and rescue helicopters and pulling people out of the wreckage. Over the noise and the screaming of the injured, I still don’t know how I managed to hear our instructions, but we were tasked to sweep all the other carriages for casualties. There was an eerie feeling as we boarded the train and I remember looking out the windows at the hundreds of onlookers on the banks watching us. It is funny how certain things draw your attention… like how empty the train was. There was not a bag or piece of clothing anywhere. That struck me as odd. It like nobody had even been on it. The sweep of the other carriages revealed no other injured and set about assisting other medics in the triage areas after the rescue workers had freed trapped passengers. Time went by unnoticed as we worked with the injured and loaded them into what seemed an endless row of ambulances. I remember looking around from time to time and wondering how they were going to clear the mangled train carriages and engines from the tracks and how long it would take to get the line open again. I don’t think we’ll ever forget what we witnessed that day. Some things are too sensitive to include in the story, but thinking back, it was incidents like this that built some of the best lifeguards along this part of the coast. 22 people lost their lives and over 100 were injured that day - a day many families of lost ones and the emergency personnel that worked there, will never forget.

Pure Audio Pleasure! Rabbitone audio is a small manufacturer of specialist audio equipment. Their heritage includes military EOD communications, Microlight intercoms, helmets, antennas, light aircraft equipment and solar products. Now they have expanded into TV headphones and hearing solutions with the new Lint Audio range. The Rabbitone range focuses on the TV listening market, whether watching late at night, in a bedroom or simply some private viewing, a Rabbitone product is available to fulfil the requirements. A truly clear speech spectrum is possible by a direct cable plugging to the DSTV or TV direct. It’s a more economical means to enable headphone viewing than with a wireless system. Wireless headphones do not feature similar clarity at an economical price. THE LINTAUDIO IS TARGETING THE THREE SECTORS OF THE AUDIO MARKET. • THE CAST MARKET, you use any streaming service, Spotify, Deezer or Tunein radio or similar and play via a Google chromecast, phone or suitable device. The streaming device plays through the Lint Solo (a high end headphone amplifier) or a Lint Stereo 5, this is a 5 watts per channel class AB amplifier. All of these products use high end audio components found in far more expensive systems. With casting there is no need for fancy audio controls as the streaming device does this for you. Simply pure analogue sounds. • THE VINYL MARKET, two products specifically designed for a person who wants to dabble in Vinyl. They will need a turntable, these are normally in a relatives attic or available on the internet. However newer sound systems and surround sound systems do not accept a phono (turntable) input and require a pre amplifier. These are the LINTone, a entry level pre amplifier unit that performs perfectly with a mains powered supply. • THE PORTABLE SOUNDS MARKET, a Lint Buddy is a portable headphone amplifier designed to be used with a portable sound source to drive over the ear headphones and enhance the sound experience. It drives up to three headphones and may also be plugged in at home and drive two small speakers. Intended for the commuter and traveller, simple download a sound track from a streaming service, plug in and enjoy the rich sound of analogue electronics. Other products manufactured are a gamer’s headphone charging stand and ordinary headphone stands to allow a convenient storage spot for headphones. A range of vinyl LP record stands and also Tee shirts will be available soon. All products made in Ballito - www.rabbitone.co.za / www.lintaudio.co.za

COURTYARD GARDENS TRACY RILEY – ECO BALANCE LANDSCAPES

T

HE warming winter sun peeks modestly through the leaves of your Jasmine creeper as the gentle breeze drops its fragrance over your comfy lounger. Your book drops to the floor as you lose yourself in this stolen moment. You’re nestled peacefully in your beautiful little courtyard garden.

Doesn’t this sound just idyllic? Courtyard Gardens are an effortless way to

achieve a little oasis of respite in your chaotic surroundings, be it a school, a corporate building, private home or even a hospital. Here are our top 10 ideas and tips to assist you in your courtyard garden project: 1. CHOOSE A COURTYARD THEME There are so many options when it comes to choosing a theme for your courtyard garden. You could relate it to a country for example the English or French countryside, or it could be a plant choice for example a succulent garden courtyard, or a tropical garden courtyard, depending on your climate. 2. USE SPACE WISELY Courtyard spaces are usually quite small so consider your use of space wisely. Use walls set up with a lattice and a climber such as a Jasmin creeper. Install paving that is just the right width, not too wide nor too narrow – set it off with cobblestones to add texture. If you have a window looking into the courtyard, this is a good opportunity to plant a window box, for extra planting space.

3. ADD STRUCTURE Use water features and planting containers to bring structure to your garden courtyard. The water feature can be a focus point of calm and serenity. Don’t be

afraid to use a bold water feature but keep the size relevant to the size of your courtyard. 4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS Your plants should be chosen according to your chosen theme, but don’t neglect to consider your environment. Does your courtyard get any sun or is it fully shaded? Will you be able to water regularly, or do you need a hardier succulent? Have you installed a lattice that needs a creeper? Is there good draining in the courtyard? Are you looking to provide shade for a very sunny area? These should all be consideration when choosing your plants. 5. CONSIDER GROWING USEFUL PLANTS You could make your garden earn its keep by growing small veggies or an herb garden. These would fare well in your window boxes if you choose to use these as a feature. You can plant herbs in a container closer together than you would in the ground. 6. LET THE LIGHT IN When you’re planning your courtyard garden, remember to consider the natural light coming into the courtyard area. Design your outdoor space with care to enhance the natural outdoor light as much as possible. 7. MAKE CLEVER USE OF SEATING The right choice of seating can add a huge wow-factor to your courtyard garden. Consider your intended use of the garden: would you be using it for entertaining or breakfasts outdoors? Would you like to enjoy the space as a quiet reading-corner? Modern garden-seating can be both weather-proof and extremely comfortable, as well as aesthetically pleasing. A well-chosen outdoor lounger or 2-seater couch can add a unique décor flair. Alternatively, a little 2-seater French bistro table would be perfect for a breakfast nook.

8. USE WALL SPACE TO ADD DÉCOR FINISHES If you are not using your walls for creepers, you could decorate them with hanging lanterns or wrought iron features, depending on your garden courtyard theme. Old window shutters glued to the wall make a magnificent feature and create a perception of ‘more’. Driftwood pieces fixed to the wall also make unique art pieces. 9. LIGHT IT UP To make the best use of your garden courtyard in the evenings , lighting is an important consideration. If you are going to be entertaining after sunset, consider using lanterns to create an ambient setting. However, if you are going to be reading in your courtyard garden at night, you will need to install a more solid lighting system. 10. FIRE IT UP A skillful use of a small courtyard space would be to install a fire pit for cosy evenings around the fire with friends and a bottle of great vino. Build the fire pit to incorporate some seating, use scatter cushions to enhance the décor, and you’ve got yourself a perfect entertainment venue. Remember to build drainage into your firepit and take all necessary fire precautions.

THE AUTUMN GARDEN PAM JACOB - DRIEFONTEIN GARDEN CENTRE

T

he days are glorious and oh so good for gardening. Just the right amount of rain and just the right amount of cool and all the glorious treasures of the Autumn garden. Pansies and violas are again in stock to delight you with their beautiful, happy faces. Whether in the open ground, hanging baskets or pots and containers, with the right care, they should give joy for a good six to eight months or more. Calendulas – whether yellow or orange – put on a wonderful show in the herbaceous border, especially when planted in bold groups. Impatiens seedlings are back in full force with a marvellous array of colours to suit every taste and excite the senses – sun to shade.

The Indigenous Leonotis leonuris or Wild Dagga plant, as it is commonly known, is about to burst into bloom and give loads of nectar to insects and birds alike with their tall stalks bursting with buds in pure white or orange. Best planted in a quieter area of the garden to allow the birds some privacy as they feed to their hearts delight, whilst the butterflies flutter around - this is a plant that should be added to the collection of every nature lover. May grow to 2m in height and can be heavily pruned back after the flowering period, to encourage new growth for the following season – but don’t prune to early as there will be continual flushes of flowers for a while. One of the great delights of the Autumn garden must be the indigenous Plectranthus plants – over 400 species

in this family, ranging from ground covers to large shrubs and suitable for shade or full sun areas. Often with a deeper plum coloured under side to the leaf or a range of cream/green variegations, from smooth to rough textured. Flowers are from white to pink to purple, arrange on spikes, giving a feathery effect. Plectranthus `Zulu Wonder’ is the perfect filler plant for every garden – approximately 75cm in height with a spread of about 1.5m. Plant Plectranthus shrubs as background plants or individual specimens to add texture to the garden and use the ground covers as bold sweeps for the border. Good when planted under trees, but remember to give some added nutrients and moisture as the roots of trees will draw all the nutrients, leaving little for the plants at their base to take up. You should still be feeding your garden on a regular basis – the last lawn fertilizer application possibly at the end of May and the programme resumed at the end of July when growth will restart. Flowers flowering in Autumn and Winter also need their nutrient

supply, so please don’t slacken in that area. Pay a visit to the Nursery and with selective buying, you will have plants bursting into colour in your garden for every season of the year.

ITH the increase in VAT, we immediately think of doing a bit of personal belt tightening. There is no doubt that the 1% increase in the VAT rate is an added cost to all taxpayers, however, given the availability of exempt and zero-rated

items, the impact of this change is not as large as was feared, particularly for the more vulnerable lower income consumers. Zero rated items include, among others, brown bread, dried beans and other legumes, maize meal, milk, amasi, rice, fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, vegetable oil and tinned pilchards. These items make up at least 46% of the normal food purchases of the average poor household, according to Statistics SA.

It’s interesting to note that South Africa’s VAT rate is below the average for both OECD (Organization for Economic Development) and African countries. I have done some research on how the impact of VAT has effected some of our readers. Turkish Chicken Pie INGREDIENTS 1 Whole roast chicken – all the meat shredded off the bones 2 Onions - finely chopped 4 Tablespoons butter 2 Tablespoons oil 2 Garlic cloves – crushed ½ Tablespoon cinnamon 1½ Tablespoon turmeric powder 1 Tablespoon cumin powder 1 Tablespoon chili flakes ½ Tablespoon cayenne pepper ½ Tablespoon ground ginger

2 Bay leaves 500ml Chicken stock 1 tin Chick peas drained 2 T Corn flour 50g Fresh coriander – chopped 50g Fresh parsley – chopped ½ Tablespoon Salt 2 T Honey 1 Bag Kataifi pastry or ½ a roll of phyllo pastry 250g melted butter to brush the pastry

METHOD

1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius 2. Fry your onions in the oil and butter in a big pot, after the onions have softened add the garlic and fry for another few minutes. 3. Add all of the spices to the pot and fry for 5 minutes allowing your spices to toast. Keep stirring throughout the 5 minutes. 4. Add the bay leaves, chicken stock and chick peas and cook for another 10 minutes 5. Mix your corn flour with a little water (approximately ¼ cup) until you have a runny paste with no lumps. 6. Pour your corn flour mixture into the pot and stir until the mixture has thickened. 7. Take your pot off the heat and add the fresh herbs, honey, salt and shredded chicken. 8. If you are using the Kataifi pastry pour the melted butter over the pastry and rub it all together until all the little pastry threads are covered with butter. Line a 32cm round spring-form tin with the pastry on the bottom and 4cm up the sides. Pour the filling in and cover the top with more pastry. 9. If you are using phyllo pastry, brush the sheets with butter and layer 6 sheets in your 32cm round spring-form tin. Line the bottom and the sides with the one side of the pastry rectangle leaving the other to fall over the edge of the tin. Once you have 6 layers on the bottom pour the filling into your pastry case and fold the other side of the pastry over the top forming the “lid” of your pie. 10. Bake for 1 hour until the pastry is golden and crispy.

A sing along taught to help us learn and melodically grasp the kaleidoscope of

instincts as women. Sixteen years ago Nirasha Dhaniram gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Mikhail. However, early during the cognitive stages of his development, Nirasha’s motherly instincts told her that Mikhail was different. She had to TRUST in her profession as a psychologist to explore and try to better understand her son’s condition. After years of research and consultation, she discovered that Mikhail was in fact autistic. In 2014 she established the Imbalito Hope College, a school for children with special needs. On Saturday the school hosted “South Africa’s Rainbow Walk for Autism” at the Moses Mabida Stadium. The event aimed to raise awareness on Autism as a spectrum disorder. The Rainbow theme was quite fitting when you think about the kaleidoscope of the rainbow and align it with how broad Autism is itself as a spectrum disorder.

the colours of the rainbow. I remember being slightly confused by the notion or the suggestion even, in this case, in the lyrics that one could listen with their eyes and heart. As a 7 year old, I realised that I needed to TRUST that the “Big People” knew better. As a big person myself now, I understand the concept of artistic license. Society teaches us to subscribe to the ideology of what “perfect” is. The perfect husband, perfect home, perfect family, the perfect everything. Ten perfect fingers and ten perfect toes, but the reality is that real life is not always so romantic and perfect isn’t always so perfect. This is when we learn to TRUST in ourselves and not society’s norms or beliefs per say. As a mother there are things that come instinctively to you and you will never hesitate to act on those instincts, as such we learn to TRUST our own

In this world we will all have trials and tribulations, we deal with constant disappointments and failure and the only thing that keeps us going is HOPE. A hope restored in Bhavana Singh, a parent to a six year old pupil at Imbalito Hope College, whose journey began three years ago, a child often described as a miracle child, due to the remarkable progress he has made since joining the school. There is hope, hope that when diagnosed early enough, children with autism can reach their full potential, right away, all the way, in a happy way. Advances in medical science have made it easier to diagnose and in some cases it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. If you feel your child is at risk, trust your gut, and get them screened. As the slogan goes....”I’m not naughty..... I’m Autistic”.

L&S DRIVES THE C-HR …The Stylish Crossover from TOYOTA

PER SPECIALS !

rent New HILUX 2018 Models

AVE UP TO R40 000 George Tossel Sales Manager, Leanne Perkins Dealer Principal & Dave Charles

I

T’S been a while since Toyota introduced a product with standout aesthetic appeal. While the new Fortuner is good looking, but the C-HR appeals on more levels. This looks like a car from the future and at this price point, it’s actually attainable. It lands slap-bang in the highly popular compact family car/crossover/baby SUV segment, where, until this week, the lack of a Toyota product was rather obvious.

S

The Turkish-built Toyota C-HR comes to market with 1 engine, two transmission options and there is a pair of trim levels available. It’s the engine that deserves closer scrutiny as it marks a new chapter for the Japanese brand in South Africa – the introduction of a turbopetrol motor.

REFINED POWERPLANT

ON ALL

This new 1.2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder unit pushes out 85 kW and 185 Nm. Power goes to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission. Forget the numbers for a second, the real strength of this engine is its refinement and quietness. It’s also somewhat frugal too, with a claimed consumption figure of just 6.4 L/100 km. Either of the transmissions is good and choosing which the better option is, is a challenge. The 6-speed manual ‘box features the same rev-matching software from the Hilux, which adds some smoothness to the gear shifts and the box’s action has a sporty and positive feel to it. The real surprise is the CVT, which behaves like a conventional automatic. CVTs don’t have a stellar reputation in the petrol head fraternity thanks to the droning noise experienced at full throttle, but, here’s the thing, unless you’re absolutely mashing your foot flat all the time, none of that CVT drone is apparent. Drive it at cruising speed or with measured throttle inputs and you may be surprised by just how quiet and refined the powertrain is.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

generous, taller passengers tend to have to squeeze into the rear benches of most compact family cars.

Reasonably well, as a matter of fact. Built on a new platform (shared with the Prius), the C-HR rides well and delivers a driving experience more akin to a big hatchback than a baby SUV. Its seating position is high, something that is very trendy at the moment, but the benefits are obvious: you can certainly see a bit more around you from your elevated vantage point. The C-HR is quite adept at dealing with quick corners with dexterity and the steering is sharp and direct enough to provide some driving enjoyment. You’ll appreciate the high levels of grip and only careless manhandling on the part of the driver could upset the car’s handling composure.

SUMMARY

The C-HR represents a new way of thinking from the brand and is stylish and modern. In a crowded segment, where there is an element of sameness about some of the products, the C-HR is a standout.
