W

ay back almost hidden in the mists of time, a colleague of mine at Wits Drama School wrote a television series for children for her Honours dissertation. Because part of the exercise required a working model of the concept, she needed to produce a pilot for the series and this meant she needed a presenter who could sing and…apparently… I was it. I must confess that I wasn’t overly excited at the prospect of wasting the better part of a morning at the wits television studio, such as it was, playing the part, but she offered me a small fee and, as a hungry student, I gabbed it.

I was cast as the charming “big brother” type character who worked with a talking doll called Silly Sue to teach kids about the benefits of recycling waste into art etc. The show was called Something New and because it needed a theme tune, I was also tasked to create one that I could open and close the show with. As I was a working musician in those days, this was no great hardship and I bashed something together that was acceptable - and that was that.

But actually, it wasn’t.

Apparently the show was rather good and, without my knowledge, she submitted it to the SABC as a concept for a children’s television series. To her great delight, it was accepted and I am sure she was paid quite handsomely for the scripts, but there was a catch.

The SABC producer, Willem-Jan van der Laag, insisted that the original characters be included in the deal as he considered them key to the success of the venture. And that was my introduction to the world of television.

I can remember being quite terrified at my first rehearsal in a real studio – everything was massive and imposing – from the gigantic soundproof studio double doors to the brightly painted set full of props. There were enormous mobile cameras and a huge articulated boom that was cranked over you to capture the live sound, studio lights that pumped out thousands of watts that melted the makeup off your face… oh yes, and there was the make-up and

hair studio, dressing rooms, hospitality room and so many people all rushing around to make it happen. All of this for me and a talking doll…okay the doll was played by a real person, but still…

The first series proved so popular that they went on to commission a second series called Something Else.

I forget how many episodes we shot in total, but each one started and ended with the theme tune that I performed live on tape and I was paid a fee for each episode so I was over the moon. It wasn’t much – the SABC was notoriously tight when it came to paying artistes in those days – but it helped with my university tuition fees and I promptly forgot all about it until a few days ago when I received an email from the SAMRO Retirement

SAMRO is the South African Music Rights Organisation which I apparently was registered as a member of when I wrote the theme tune for those TV shows. How they tracked me down after all this time is a complete mystery and even more surprising was the contents of the communication.

It was a benefit statement indicating that I had at some stage through the SABC, unwittingly contributed to their pension fund and this small sum had been growing steadily for years.

It’s not a fortune, but it’s a very nice surprise and I am very grateful for it.

RIDAY 21st July 2017, was the fiftieth anniversary of the mysterious death of Chief Albert Luthuli, chief of Abasemakholweni, President-General of the African National Congress, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and IsithwalandweSeaparankwe. He was a unique man who many believe was an embodiment of the diversity of our country.

Chief Albert Luthuli lived close to the reality of the poverty that faced hhis people.

As the Chief, he always ensured a fair and just approach to persons found doing wrong.

Chief Luthuli did not believe in fining wrong doers because he understood the socio-economic circumstances his people were faced with. He believed there were other means to discipline his people other than making them pay. His sense of justice was fair to all.

Occupying a religious post, Luthuli understood that not everyone belonged to the Christian faith in this community and his council consisted of both Christians and non-Christians. He respected all of them and treated them equally; Chief among his concerns was what could be done to enhance the socio-

economic conditions of those trapped in grinding poverty. As a farmer he helped form the Natal and Zululand Sugarcane Association and later became its chairperson; Chief Albert Luthuli was prepared to sacrifice for the freedom of his people.

When he joined the ANC and later became its president for natal and later President-general, he participated in the Defiance Campaign of 1952, became part of the Treason Trial of 1956 and led the anti-pass protest post the March 21, 1960 Sharpeville Massacre.

These and other activities, brought him up against the apartheid regime. He was made to choose between being the chief who would respect the authority of the apartheid rules or to continue with the ANC activities, he chose the route of liberation.

It is this commitment to the cause of freedom that made him the first African and first individual outside of Europe and Americas to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. By force of example chief Luthuli inspired millions in our country and across the globe to join hands with the poor, voiceless and disenfranchised in the struggle for freedom.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, PART 1: BELINDA BOLTE - 1-2-1 PERSONAL PUPPY AND DOG TRAINING

I

F you are considering getting a dog to be part of your family, then consider a few questions before making your final decision:

٠ Do we have time to bring a puppy/

dog into our lives? ٠ Are we able to adequately provide for our puppy/dog’s basic needs such as Food/Shelter/Vaccinations/Fenced Garden/General well-being? ٠ What breed of puppy/dog will suit my family the best? ٠ Remember there are a number of initial costs, the price of the puppy or rescue dog [Donation to the rescue organisation], vaccinations, food, spaying or neutering and of course puppy school fees.

Over the next few additions we will take a look at each of the seven groups of dogs, as classified by KUSA Kennel Union of South Africa.

Dogs are divided into groups Gundogs, Hounds, Herders, Toys, Terriers, Working dogs, and Utility.

GUNDOGS: Labrador/Retriever/ Spaniels/Pointers/Weimeraner Perfect for a sporty family who love to exercise or are keen to get involved in various dog sports, possibly even field trials, working tests or agility.

Gundogs were bred to assist the hunter in finding his quarry. Some were bred to flush out or retrieve game, while others were bred to track game, keep it at bay and alert the hunter to its location. Although they are still used in a hunting capacity today Gundogs make suitable companions. They are naturally intelligent and their easy going nature and willingness to please makes them a popular choice.

HOUNDS: Rhodesian ridgeback, Greyhound, Beagle, Dachshund and Bloodhound.

Hounds were bred as hunting dogs, both for sport and to put food on the table. Their excellent olfactory sense for tracking or their unique body shapes that are built for speed, enable them to pursue and secure their prey.

Scent hounds like the Beagle and Blood Hound, use their noses to find their quarry, while sight hounds like the Afghan and the Whippet use their sense of sight, speed and agility to track and locate their targets Hounds make peaceable and affectionate family pets that thrive on love and companionship. They need a good amount of exercise and would enjoy participating in active dog sports, but will also be content to rest quietly at home. You will need to work a little harder in training but as long as you keep it positive and reward based you will succeed.

Tip for the week: Lure-reward training is a positive training method whereby the dog is “lured” into a position using food or a toy and then rewarded in that position. The dog is always rewarded for doing the correct behaviour. Once the dog has got the behaviour, it is important to start fading the lure, but give yourself and your puppy/dog some time before you attempt fading the reward. Each dog learns at a different pace and levels so take your time.

Once your dog has mastered the exercise and is successful on 10 occasions in a row [over a few days] then it is very important to start rewarding on an intermittent basis so the dog will work for the anticipation of the reward even if it is not forthcoming each time. Intermittent reinforcement makes the behaviour stronger.

A recent trip along the very windy, and potentially dangerous road through remote farmland and townships in Northern Natal got one of our readers wondering about liability when it comes to car accidents, and what one should do in the event of an accident – this thought came after the person concerned was almost shoved off the road (and over a fairly steep cliff) by the impatient driver of a double cab, intent on taking a few scalps on his way to wherever he was headed.

Our reader knew his own car insurance was up to date as he had just had a message saying “Yay, your premium has just decreased again by another R3.50” Always good to get positive news from someone in the insurance industry!

However, what I was concerned about, was if there had been an accident as a result of the other drivers negligence, then what? The law states that a person alleging negligence will have to show that the other driver did not act responsibly.

Either they were driving at an excessive speed; they failed to keep a proper lookout; they failed to keep the vehicle under control or they had been drinking and driving.

It’s a sad fact of life that one can still purchase a car in South Africa – and not take out insurance. 65% of cars on the road are apparently uninsured. This legislation should definitely be changed, but until it is, you need to get all your ducks in a row immediately after the

accident – should you still be able to do so. Get hold of the police immediately – this is where these great security apps come in to play. You can simply activate your panic button to let your security team know what happened and they will contact the nearest police station and also get someone to the scene of the accident as soon as possible. Once you have the police report, if the driver of the other vehicle is not insured and is responsible for the accident, then you need to take the matter up with your own insurance company immediately, giving them as much detail as possible. The alternative is to take the matter up with the small claims court if the claim is for under R15 000. If it is over that amount, you will need an attorney.

Stay safe – and keep off backroads likely to have a plethora of uninsured drivers!

Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media.

OCIAL MEDIA can be a very powerful tool for both business and personal uses, and if used correctly can be extremely effective in promoting your brand and connecting with people personally in your day-to-day. Here is how you can achieve this:

Don’ts:

٠ Don’t post personal information online like bank details or your home address – anything that could be used for criminal purposes. ٠ Don’t misuse copyright material – when you quote someone else’s work or use an image that does not belong to you or the company, you need to link to the person that it belongs to her quote their name as the owner. ٠ Don’t assume that posting comments or content anonymously automatically excuses you from saying whatever you feel online. Inappropriate comments and content like racial slurs or sexual innuendos are not acceptable and there are ways for people to source your identity in these instances. ٠ Don’t ever talk about clients online in a negative light or post information about them without their prior consent.

Not only is this disrespectful, but can also land you in hot water with their lawyer. ٠ Don’t engage in any online activities that could be damaging to your business or family. If it is not acceptable behaviour or language at work, then it is not acceptable to post online.

Do’s:

٠ Do be mindful of the fact that everything you post online is going to be there for a long time, for anyone to see, and in particular, future employers or clients. Drunken or crude photos of yourself are not things you want the whole world to see, especially if it means loss of business. ٠ Do make sure that your online profile portrays how you want people to see you in a business sense. If you want your fellow co-workers, staff or clients to see you as professional, then you need to act professionally online. ٠ Do remember that whatever you or someone in your company posts online, is a reflection of your brand, so should reflect its values and ethos at all times. ٠ Do try to add valuable content or comments online on behalf of your company, whether on your own pages or when commenting on other company blogs or pages. ٠Do consider other people’s religions, sexual orientations, political standing and race when posting online.

You can very easily offend people by posting things that relate to your beliefs or outlook, which could result in you being sued.

oes it go something like this: Wake up tired, coffee, breakfast, stress, coffee, lunch, tired, coffee, stress, home, wired, wine, dinner... can't sleep.If this is you, your adrenals may (definitely) need a little TLC.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and adrenal glands can’t keep up with the tremendous amount of daily stress many people experience.

What are the Causes?

Some of the more common causes of adrenal fatigue include; •gut biome imbalance •autoimmune conditions •emotional stress •excessive exercise •toxins •food intolerances What are the Symptoms?

Some of the symptoms include; craving sugary treats, struggling to lose/gain weight, struggling to sleep, limited sex drive, body aches, trouble concentrating, racing thoughts, moodiness and irritability, always tired, feeling overwhelmed, and hormone imbalance. Luckily, you can heal adrenal fatigue with three simple steps: a healthy diet, taking targeted supplements and reducing stress.

TREATMENT 1. A Healthy Diet There are a number of foods that support adrenal function. They help replenish your adrenal energy so your system can come back to full health.

Some of the top superfoods for adrenal health include: •Coconut •Olives •Avocado •Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.)

•Fatty fish (e.g., wild-caught salmon) •Nuts, such as walnuts and almonds •Seeds, such as pumpkin, chia and flax •Kelp and seaweed •Celtic or Himalayan sea salt These foods help overcome adrenal insufficiency because they’re nutrientdense, low in sugar, and have healthy fat and fibre.Remove anything that taxes your adrenals. Foods to avoid include: •Caffeine: This can interfere with your sleep cycle and make it hard for your adrenals to recover. If you must drink coffee or a caffeinated beverage, then have a limited amount in the morning before noon.

•Sugar and sweeteners: Includes avoiding high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners as well. Avoid sugary foods; cereals, sweets, etc. Be aware that sugar is an additive in many breads, condiments and dressings.

Try to avoid as much extra sugar as possible.

•Processed and microwaved foods: First of all, the microwave has its own dangers, but additionally, most microwaveable foods have many preservatives and fillers that are hard to digest and wear out your body’s energy and digestion cycle. Try to buy food on the outer walls of your grocery store and prepare your own food whenever possible.

•Hydrogenated oils: Vegetable oils like soybean, sunflower, canola and corn oil are highly inflammatory and can lead to adrenal inflammation. Try to only use good fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, organic butter or ghee.

2. Targeted Supplements Certain adrenal-boosting nutrients are needed to get your adrenal function back up, such as: •Adaptogens e.g. Ashwagandha, Holy basil or Rhodiola •Omega 3 Fish oil (EPA/DHA) •Magnesium •Vitamins B5 & B12 •Vitamin C & D3 •Zinc 3. Reduce Stress Be kind to yourself. Pay attention to your body. Find balance in your life.

•Rest when you feel tired (as much as possible).

•Sleep 8–10 hours a night.

•Laugh and do something fun every day.

•Minimize work and relational stress.

•Eat regularly and don't skip meals.

•Exercise but don't overdo it (good options are yoga, pilates, swimming and walking) •Avoid negative people and self-talk.

Think yourself positive.

•Take time for yourself (do something relaxing).

•Seek counsel or support for any traumatic experiences.

Final Point The good news is that you can reverse the effects of adrenal fatigue and start to heal by implementing the three aforementioned simple steps.

But remember that a health program should be tailored to your specific needs. What works for one person may not for you. So get tested and seek counsel from your trusted health care provider.

delights HERBY QUINOA AND CHIA ARANCINI Method:

MAKES 25-30 BALLS Ingredients:

4 Cups Cooked Quinoa 2 Cups Chia Seeds 1/2 Cup Basil finely chopped 1/2 Cup Parsley finely chopped 1/3 Cup Chives finely chopped Zest of 1 lemon 2 Cups grated parmesan 1 ½ block brie (or your choice of cheese for the centre) Salt and pepper to taste Oil for frying

1. Put the quinoa, chia and parmesan into a large bowl, mix roughly to combine.

2. Divide the quinoa chia mixture in half, and blitz one half together with the herbs and lemon zest until it reaches a sticky, green dough consistency.

3. Add the blitzed up quinoa ‘dough’ to the other half of the quinoa chia mixture in the mixing bowl, and combine the mixture by kneading together with your hands.

4. Once the mixture is well combined and a good rolling consistency (not too sticky) grab about 2 tablespoons of your quinoa dough, roll it into a ball and flatten it on the palm of your hand. Place a small (1cm x 1cm) cube of brie in the center, and seal it in by enclosing the quinoa dough around the block of brie, and rolling it into a ball about the size of a golf ball.

5. Get a pot onto the stove with about 1.5 litres of oil heating up. You want to get this super hot for frying.

6. Roll the rest of your quinoa balls, while the oil is heating up.

7. Pop a bit of your dough into the oil to test the heat.

8. Once you have super hot oil, pop the rolled quinoa balls into the hot oil and deep fry until they are beautiful and golden. Remove from the oil and leave to stand on some paper towel to blot off the excess oil.

9. Absolutely delicious served immediately with tomato, chilli, ginger jam or sticky onion marmalade and a sprinkle of fresh chopped flat leaf parsley.

The new engines that have been added are 2.0 TDI with power output that ranges from 81kw to 130kW as well as the model range topper, 2.0 TSI petrol engine with 162kW power output. The high powered engines, 2.0 TDI with 105kW, 2.0 TDI with 130kW and 2.0 TSI with 162kW are offered with the improved 4MOTION all-wheel system.

4MOTION all-wheel drive system All-wheel drive is a key feature for many Tiguan customers. The new high efficient 4MOTION all-wheel drive system has enhanced the off-road capabilities of the new Tiguan. Offering great grip on the roughest roads and in the worst weather, 4MOTION constantly monitors driving conditions and reacts to the slightest wheel slip, delivering extra traction to the wheels with the most grip. All this happens in milliseconds, through control units linked to the car’s dynamic sensors, engine management system and gearbox. At the heart of the system is an inter-axle differential – a fifth generation Haldex coupling – which shares power between the front and rear axle, sending it where it’s most needed. At the same time, the smaller differences in rotational speed when cornering or manoeuvring have to be balanced to stop torsional stresses in the drive train. The differential is

designed to work with the car’s other active safety systems such as the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the electronic stability programme (ESP).

The ground clearance of all Tiguan 4MOTION versions is 10 mm higher (201 mm instead of 191 mm). In addition, the Tiguan can be ordered with an ‘Off-road’ package with a special off-road front end that provides an approach angle of 25.6 degrees instead of the usual 18.3 degrees.

The departure angle at the rear is 24.7 degrees for all versions, while the ramp angle is 20 degrees.

Regardless of whether the vehicle has an on-road or off-road front end design, the new Tiguan is engineered for very large trailer loads of up to 2 200 kgs – depending on engine/ gearbox choice.

New on this generation of Tiguan is the high-spec 4MOTION Active Control. The intuitively operated rotary/ push-button switch is located on the centre console and allows the driver to activate one of four driving modes.

When the driver turns the switch to the left one of the two road profiles: ‘Onroad’ or ‘Snow’ is activated. When the switch is turned to the right, the driver selects one of the two off-road profiles: ‘Offroad’ (automatic setting of off-road parameters) or ‘Offroad Individual’ (variable settings). When

driving off-road, 4MOTION Active Control lets drivers switch the assistance systems in seconds with a single manual operation.

Off-road, the new Tiguan is nothing short of a confident trailblazer. The electronic accelerator pedal can be metered precisely as the intelligence of the dual clutch gearbox allows it to upshift later. The driver can avoid mandatory shifts by changing gears via the tip gate (+/-); this also facilitates engine braking. In this case “automatic freewheeling” is deactivated, which is decoupling of the engine to make use of the kinetic energy of coasting. Traction control (ASR) governs engine speed and simultaneously manages traction and driving stability. In parallel, the steering

system and adaptive damper control switch over to a suitable driving profile.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) activates the Offroad characteristic, and the driver assistance systems for hill ascent and descent come into play. In addition, the dynamic cornering lights open up a brighter and wider light pattern near the car.

The new Tiguan comes standard with a 5 year/90 000km Service Plan, 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty. Service Interval is 15 000km.

he new 3008 SUV now available at Peugeot Umhlanga features the latest-generation Peugeot i-Cockpit that is futuristic and equipped with technological features centred around the driver. A new, more compact steering wheel is fitted with two flat sides for better grip and the driver has access to an 8-inch tablet-like touch-screen infotainment system with six piano key "toggle switches" to control functions such as radio, climate control, navigation, vehicle parameters, telephone and mobile apps.

The new 3008 is equipped with a 12.3-inch high-resolution instrument display that can be configured and personalised according to your taste via a button on the steering wheel and a total of 5 display modes are available to the driver. Interior materials include leather, brushed chrome, carbon and cloth.

With an 80 mm longer wheelbase, this latest 3008 has a more spacious cabin too. Peugeot claims 520 litres of boot space and the car features a "Magic Flat" folding rear seat as well as a two-position sliding floor. The front passenger seat folds flat too, allowing you to load items up to 3.0 metres long. A hands-free tailgate will be offered as an option and can be operated with a simple swipe of the foot under the rear bumper.

The 3008 offers a range of petrol and diesel engines, mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Petrol engines include a 97 kW 1.2-litre and a 123 kW 1.6-litre engine.

The diesel engine range comprises four options including a 1.6-litre engine in two states of tune offering 75 kW and 89 kW, as well as a 2.0-litre diesel engine offering either 112 kW or 134 kW. The 3008 features Advanced Grip Control, giving it capability in offroad situations. A total of 5 modes will be offered including Normal, Snow, Mud, Sand and ESP OFF, all selected using a knob on the centre console. Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC) will also give the driver more control when descending steep hills by limiting the speed to 3 kph.

Other safety features include active safety brake, distance alert, active lane departure warning, driver attention warning, automatic adaptive headlights, speed limit sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, active blind spot monitoring, park assist and Visio Park (360° all-around vision).

Water Patrol at the J Bay Corona Classic

T

he Dolphin Coast Water Patrol team DCWP was part of a big safety contingent for the WSL Corona Classic J Bay staged by the World Surfing League.

Safety for the competitors consists of five WSL certified jet ski operators, a 7meter support boat and a light fixed wing aircraft.

The DCWP was formed 9 years ago for the first Mr Price Pro, and this is the second year that they have covered the J Bay open.

They are sponsored by Yamaha South Africa’s Blue Crew Team, Toyota Ballito, Oakley, Ground Swell Surf shop and The Wet Zone.

WSL has a full medical team on site as well a doctor, ambulance and paramedics, physio and Chiropractor and a helicopter on standby if needed.

The budget for the Corona Classic J Bay is around R14 million.

There is a waiting period of 12 days for all WSL events to ensure they get the best waves.

We waited 3 days for the swell to lift and we got surf ranging from 3ft to 10ft for this year's event.

With a boat incident and various the shark sightings, it was by far the most eventful WSL contest to date.
